AV Geeks Lunch 3-15

hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show um i'm back i was away um i hope that my uh guest host uh bert the turtle uh did okay um he wanted to show a lot of turtle films and we actually had a lot of turtle films a show and surprisingly we hadn't shown duck and cover uh this is our 312th show and all that time we hadn't seen duck and cover and that is one of the most popular films in our collection by far um so yeah so it seemed appropriate to have him on uh i got sunburned this weekend sitting outside because i'm fair-skinned and av geeks like to be in the dark for that reason so i have an actual redneck right here because i was in that part of north carolina uh anyways um happy that you're here to join me watch some interesting things i just discovered a great film and it's great because who's who's in the film and let me see if you can tell why i'm excited if you can name who figure out who in this next film i'm like oh my gosh that's amazing and i'll reveal the answer at the end so this is uh sound the trumpets um i need to change the caption here but all right enjoy [Music] [Music] every age has its joshuas and its jerichos common to them all is the existence of some obstruction to human betterment and a desire to remove it the joshua in this instance fittingly enough is mr joshua jones consulting architect whom we find addressing a metropolitan fashion on a proposed new downtown development he's been attacking a particular jericho known as architectural barriers like his biblical namesake our modern joshua has met some stiff opposition well i'm sorry mr jones but i failed to see your point these barriers as you call them are something we've always lived with why all of a sudden are we so eager to eliminate them simply because we finally are beginning to recognize their real significance the rehabilitation we're making the lives of our disabled and aged citizens more healthy happy and productive yet these efforts are largely wasted because these people are blocked from normal community participation by the archaic design of our buildings the simple needs and rights of these people are too often overlooked yet they represent a large segment of our population now let's look at it another way have you ever considered how fortunate are the hail and party who can take a stairway or even a mountain in their stride for not only have they the gift of mobility but they have a world conceived and constructed almost exclusively for them it's as if the builders of our age forgot that any but the active in the agile inhabit the earth as a matter of fact you would have to be healthy and agile to enjoy freedom and safety of movement in the modern world and even then you might find the going not without serious hazard and inconvenience this is mostly because we build our edifices mainly for the nimble and the quick short-sightedly we have neglected to make our structures fully accessible and usable to the whole of our society so acute is this surprising oversight that even our ableist citizens aren't entirely free to go their appointed ways without certain difficulty [Music] however it is the less able and there are far more of these than we realize who are the real victims of the architectural squeeze this becomes clear when you put someone just as healthy but not so agile into the same situation was ever a barrier more forbidding more than half a million americans in wheelchairs leg braces or with artificial limbs who might otherwise live full and useful lives while somewhat limited by their disabilities are severely handicapped by the architectural barriers which hold them back at every [Music] turn likewise five million americans with heart conditions encounter many barriers every day seventeen and a half million more men and women past the age of 65 would greatly benefit from easier access to public and private buildings whether it's church a bowling alley office store factory school library courthouse a stadium or even at home the resulting freedom of activity enjoyed by our senior citizens would in turn benefit the whole of society obviously thousands of so-called public buildings are not truly public because they are inaccessible to millions of citizens especially the handicapped there are no signs that read keep out but the insidious barriers of thoughtlessness say it far more effectively and if the handicapped and aged cannot enter buildings they cannot hope to be educated and trained there to hold jobs there nor to conduct their affairs there probably the most inaccessible buildings are our governmental structures and churches by tradition these have been built as monuments rather than true places of public activity despite this it has been repeatedly proven that it generally costs less to construct a building without steps and on a single level than to put the structure on a pedestal now it's not just the old the sick or the handicapped who are affected actually all citizens would gain what benefits the handicapped also benefits the able bodied well from the looks of it we might as well tear everything down and start all over well that would be a bit drastic but i think you can see our problem at least we shouldn't continue to repeat our old mistakes the big thing to remember is that buildings are for the use of all people they should be planned with everybody's needs in mind and i can appreciate that mr jones however our planning responsibilities involve public funds how can we justify these refinements in terms of cost actually mr chairman it costs virtually nothing when these improvements are included in the original plans in fact it's this ounce of prevention in the planning stage that saves the community money in everything from remodeling to accident insurance and to maintenance costs in other words cost is minimal in planning maximal in remodeling actually these refinements make a lot of sense take a simple thing like the grading around the building it usually costs no more to grade so that at least one entrance is at ground level similarly indoor and outdoor parking space should not be designed exclusively for the able-bodied ramps in the curbing and walking lanes free of traffic are much safer and more convenient for everybody sheltered parking incidentally is highly preferable because it eliminates weather hazards every building should have at least one good wide entrance either ramped or at ground or sidewalk level with direct access to elevator service ramps should be provided where steps or curbs exist true ramps accommodate the wheelchair which in itself justifies them but they also help the cardiacs and the elderly the slope of a ramp should not exceed one foot of rise in 12 feet of length the only other simple requirements are a level platform of about five feet at the top of the ramp at least six feet of straight clearance at the bottom a safe non-slip surface and at least one handrail but preferably two where stairs are necessary they should have round nosed risers of uniform height which are never higher than seven inches now why do we have revolving doors since they are nearly always accompanied by an ordinary side door they're certainly a costly and needless duplication the side door in turn being supplementary is often too narrow this has led to many an instance where a maintenance man had to break down or fold back the revolving door to provide access similarly doors which occur in series without adequate space between them can be a virtual trap large heavy doors are little better if they can be opened only by wrestlers weight lifters and football players and double doors are generally too difficult to open from wheelchairs [Music] to rate as an ideal non-barrier an entrance must have an easy swinging single door which provides at least 32 inches of clear opening and which has a flat threshold as nearly flush with the floor as possible automatic pressure doors are excellent of course so are the invisible curtains of air known as air doors however an ordinary wide leaf door will inexpensively provide convenience for everyone now once our handicapped person is inside the building we mustn't assume he is fully emancipated from the barrier chain game but unless this building is unusual indeed any barriers he encountered on the outside could be only the prelude to an incredibly difficult obstacle course on the inside [Music] even a public water fountain can be a barrier unless it has spouts and controls at convenient height and within easy reach of the wheelchair most do not the same for telephones at least one phone in every public building should be accessible to all remember most of these things cost no more to do right provided they're done right the first time so far so good there's an elevator within easy reach no steps no sills the door seems plenty wide but there's something else the elevator floor may stop flush with the building floor as it should but the space between them is too wide a simple thing yet an elevator situation like this not only can stop a wheelchair cold but it can be a dangerous tripping hazard to heels toes canes and crutches as well many a handicapped person has finally gotten into a public building only to find that his troubles have just begun this is especially serious when the man is employed in the building what good is his being there or even having a job there if he is barred from the use of such facilities as the restrooms here's a barrier that can literally cost him his job [Music] what kind of economy is it that insists upon doorways too small for freedom why shouldn't doors be built so that every human being can use them an assured clearance of 32 inches minimum for all doors and especially restrooms should be a standard requirement in all building plans but other barriers such as privacy walls and doors in series must be eliminated too once inside the restroom the handicapped person should also be able to find stall facilities wide enough as well as sinks shelves mirrors and towels at heights convenient to his reach [Music] our conventional bathtub is little more than a medieval torture device brought up to date the broken bones bumps and bruises it has inflicted in the name of cleanliness have made the bathroom a major disaster area not only for the sake of the elderly and the handicapped but for the able-bodied as well we might at least make handrails and protective non-skid foot stripping standard equipment in all public housing projects of course wide floor level approaches to the shower room are essential showers are preferred by many elderly people these would require room enough to be fully safe and convenient for the handicapped and aged the curbs often used at shower entrances are a barrier to wheelchairs and a tripping hazard to all these can be eliminated at an actual saving of money in addition a seat should be provided to allow sitting under the showers this is especially important for the elderly on a broader scale there is much to be said for the construction of underground tunnels and overhead walkways to connect floors of buildings between which a large amount of traffic flows walkways extending over busy streets are an excellent method for eliminating the serious barrier of street traffic of course to be truly useful they must be free of steps at both ends [Music] in busy downtown areas and shopping centers the value of ramps is obvious barriers to people are barriers to business knowledge of this fact has revolutionized some fields of retail trade the tremendous success of supermarkets everywhere has dramatically demonstrated that the easier you make it for people to move about when shopping the more they will buy [Music] economists know that the handicapped and the aged comprising about a third of our population represent a significant underdeveloped market yet many such persons are literally shut out of most business establishments by architectural barriers obviously the elimination of such barriers aside from humanitarian concerns is just good business [Music] remember the old custom of doctors dentists and attorneys having their offices upstairs many have had to struggle to survive never suspecting that long steep stairway and the number of clients it kept away [Music] today the one-story ground level medical clinic is a busy place because people can visit it without difficulty with the barriers removed more of the sick can visit the doctor instead of his visiting them thus freeing him to treat more patients per day and so we see that wise business and professional men already recognize the value of easy access and use of stores offices and other facilities by the same token it is simply a matter of improving our building standards to achieve the full efficiency to which the public is entitled this i most earnestly urge you to do in your present program as i've said these improvements do not require special or expensive construction only sensible planning what surprises me mr jones is that society has succeeded so well in rehabilitating the handicapped and yet has done so little about the most obvious handicap of all these architectural barriers i agree something must be done but i'm wondering how we might uh best apply these american standard specifications to our own building program well since the specifications fully outline the minimum needs of the handicap they are of primary value as a uniform guide in the planning and designing of all types of buildings and facilities well as a planning group i'm sure we can help but it seems to me the problem is the responsibility of all citizens and especially builders that's very true of course we have to depend upon the architects for instance to see that the specifications are incorporated into their designs for public buildings contractors can work with architects and planners in making certain the specifications are carried out in the construction building code authorities can see to it that the specifications are made a part of local and state building codes city state and county officials can apply the specifications to public buildings under their jurisdiction and of course well-informed community groups can do much to influence desirable trends in public building projects [Music] society today is deeply concerned with the problems of the handicapped and the aged no longer based on curiosity or pity as it once was this concern is a practical mature interest in the very real needs of these people to play a less dependent more useful role in community life we can expect to have with us many more such victims of our fast complex highly mechanized way of life the blind the cardiacs the amputees the paralyzed and the aging these citizens ironically enough are handicapped far more seriously by architectural barriers than by their disabilities finding the world unsafe and unsound for mobility they are shut in because they are shut out this discrimination is even more exasperating because it is unintentional society has not adequately helped these people to enjoy their changed lives with dignity grace and a recovered sense of usefulness and independence to them the opportunity for a nearly normal life is denied not so much by the disability itself as by society's failure to recognize and accommodate that disability through planning and building the handicapped become in a sense outcasts and exiles banished and excluded from the world about them by a wall which is as formidable as the walls of a prison we might call it a sort of jericho a walled city which denies full freedom to a large number of its citizens what is needed perhaps is a modern joshua in fact many joshua's leaders and groups who can bring these walls tumbling down it will take joshua and effort and perseverance to inform our people but once they know they will demand that the architectural barriers be removed [Music] bear then stands your jericho [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] wow what a twist at the end um man this is the first time i've seen this film uh and um i was hesitant because it it was the crippled children's association was listed on the can i was like ah it's gonna be a downer if it's just a bunch of children in wheelchairs but it's not it's it's adults in wheelchairs but it's a lot of footage of people opening doors which is just glorious for me i really like and people having difficulty opening doors so that's kind of a visual thing for me that i like and then watching the film the main narrator the guy who plays joshua um i was like that guy that voice that's i know exactly who that is because he is featured in two films that i have one of which i have shown a lot it is part of my infamous av geek series and it would be something that i would probably show because of uh the subject matter i would probably try to show this in the much requested av geeks after dark show which i'm trying to figure out a way to facilitate it so that we can have people join uh and it's not being posted to youtube or facebook or twitch or any of these things it would be something a separate thing like maybe a zoom or something like that um but uh i was like oh my gosh that's him and i wasn't sure so i like clipped uh this uh other the other film that he is known for and it is him it totally is him now does is he really um disabled in a way uh where he has to use uh crutches i you know you can't tell uh but his name is notorious it is richard dix or dick dicks uh and he is from abc's of sex education for trainables and here's a little segment of him sex education is it possible or is it even necessary let's start with the last question first why necessary we must teach those with serious disabilities that hinder their learning to live as successfully as possible with other people now this includes their sexual behavior rather than teach which is somewhat difficult it becomes a training situation with as much explanation as they can occur and is it possible they will realize who they are as men and women and what is expected of them in social situations sex education for be made as simple as abc a awareness of their bodies and their feelings b understanding the simple mechanics of reproduction c training in responsibilities as much as they can now the ideal situation is a one-to-one basis but if this is not possible the group should be kept very small and include only those who will pay attention sorry i had a mic on um yeah i i it's totally richard dix um now i'm gonna have to dig further and see like what what his his story is because i when i first saw him in abcs of sex education retrainables i thought well like maybe he's a radio announcer or a television announcer or something and that's why he's brought in for this but to see that he's doing another thing about uh people that are handicapped it's just it makes me now like want to dig even further and try to figure out like was he himself physically handicapped you know was this you know what's what's his deal so really over the top wonderful uh to see uh made me very happy um so last week i showed uh an inside out that people loved inside out is that 70 early 70s a series that was shown on public television but then they also released of film versions that were shown in schools they're generally open-ended films and somebody mentioned in the comments that there was a one that they remember as a kid called but names will never hurt and so i was like oh i have that so let's watch this uh this one is deals with prejudice in montreal of all places so here's names will ever heard the following national instructional television series the series and related materials were developed and supported by 32 educational agencies with additional support from exxon corporation [Music] so oh [Music] frog what you call me that for [Music] i don't know grown-ups do it [Music] oh well it doesn't really matter i guess he didn't trip me where is he going he quit well what's he going over there for he's going home to hell quebec that's where french live yeah well you don't see any of them where we live do you how are you today he's getting better but is he coming home do you think probably next week sometimes [Music] hi hi do french people have to live in hell no then what do they all live there for russia wouldn't want to live there why don't they move around here well sometimes it's because they can't afford it some english people wouldn't like it if french canadians started to move in around here why some people are prejudiced against french canadians and they don't want them living near english-speaking people some people don't like blacks they want to keep them in the slums but they can't see them and some people want to keep indians on reservations away from other people some other people don't like other [Music] nationalities or hate jews or catholics or won't give jobs to old people or people with long hair why well i guess it's because they're afraid of them because they're different but that's dumb i know jews and catholics and indians they're just like everybody else i think so too but mark if you're a prejudiced you hate people who are didn't mean it i'm not prejudiced what i don't believe you you are so prejudiced i am not you are so all english people are prejudiced you all stink you make us learn english but you won't learn french english people make me sick all of them i said i was sorry i don't care and you better not come around here again because my brother is going to get you and he's all i am going to call him agencies in the united states and canada with additional support from exxon corporation this program was produced by the ontario educational communications authority under the supervision of nit national instructional television that was great i love it i have an experience in uh i did a screening in uh montreal um drove up it was for a day actually um it was a big kind of a fundraiser for a film festival that was taking place and it was at a um micro brewery but it was easily a thousand people there and we were outside uh showing films on the side of a a wall or actually it was a trailer rig um and so i did the uh film strip where i uh have people in the audience read film strip and we passed around a mic and uh some people read it in french it was great um and i basically uh revealed that i had the worst i didn't really know french because i took two years in high school and it just didn't stick and so i basically told them the french that i knew which was laughably bad and um there were highway interstate signs that were not in english and so we had a little bit of a challenge to try to figure out how to get where we were going get out of the country um but that was really great it's really great and so those man i love uh inside out it's that 70s kind of early 70s feel um thank you william for the coffee one way that you can support av geeks is by buying us coffee um talks about the problems in virginia with trash from the 60s here we go refuse refuse problem this is a modern shopping center a symbol of the sedatedness of modern living here you may shop at a leisurely pace amid a myriad of consumer goods ranging from alphabet soup to zithers and the hub of this restful haven for modern shoppers is [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] the modern life is a good life but problems do exist man has always been troubled by insect pests not only are they annoying they carry germs from filth to your dinner table but perhaps a large part of the problem is with you yourself yes you let's go into your kitchen after supper you scrape your plates into the garbage bag then you take the full bag outside and deposit it in your garbage can but look at that mess let's start again and this time let's do it right wet garbage should be wrapped in newspaper to prevent leakage which attracts roaches and flies your garbage bag should be kept in the container which will also help keep away flies and roaches and the container should be washed regularly and of course the garbage should be taken outside every evening wait a minute your kitchen is all right now but what about this this is a mess that must be cleaned up let's start by looking inside your garbage can those slimy crawling white things are maggots they will soon mature into flies that could carry germs to your dinner table a can eaten by rust allows all sorts of insects and vermin easy access to your garbage it should be replaced by a sound container a loose fitting cover lets odors out and vermin in all cans should have tight fitting lids i hope that your can doesn't look like this after it's been emptied your garbage can must be washed out regularly but there is one more problem everyone has had the problem of too much garbage for the cans of course the solution here is simple always have enough cans for your garbage some elements of the community have their own ideas on what should be done with garbage scenes like this can be prevented by building a simple rack for the containers this also keeps the cans off the ground and prolongs their usefulness but all this is just the first step in solving the refuse problem the next step is collection special trucks with hydraulic rams to compress the garbage are recommended for refuse pickup from homes for commercial pickup other special trucks are available a closed-bodied truck without a packer arrangement is satisfactory but less efficient while an open body truck is unsatisfactory as it redistributes the refuse over the countryside this litter along with that spread by litter bugs cost the public many thousands of dollars each year to clean up now what happens to the refuse after it has been collected that's right it is usually taken to a dump this is unfortunately an all too common sight at many dumps the smoke from a burning dump can create an air pollution problem and the stinking smog may spread for miles in a non-burning open dump although there is no smoke there is a pervading offensive stench these maggots find excellent growing conditions on the open dump and will soon mature into repulsive disease-carrying adult flies rats find an abundance of food and a good home on open dump they too are responsible for the spread of several serious human diseases stagnant puddles of water in dumps make good breeding places for mosquitoes these wiggle tails soon grow into biting mosquitoes which are efficient disease spreaders besides open authorized dumps others just seem to spring up wherever people find it convenient to discard their refuse such promiscuous dumps are hard to control offensive and a community health problem yet it is possible to dispose of refuse in a manner that will be sanitary economical and an asset to the community such a method is called a sanitary landfill each day collection trucks bring their loads to the landfill here they deposit the refuse after the day's collection has been deposited it is compacted by a bulldozer or other piece of heavy equipment [Music] after the refuse has been compacted it is covered each day with a layer of earth this seals it off from flies rats and other vermin and eliminates air pollution there are two types of sanitary landfills one is the trench method wherein a trench is excavated and the refuse placed in it compacted and covered daily in the gully or low ground method refuses placed and compacted in a natural low area and covered daily with earth obtained from adjoining slopes a completed landfill cell looks like this and allows reclamation of the land this housing development is built on what was once a sanitary landfill as is this high school and the adjoining athletic field and the shopping center where there is no suitable land readily available for a landfill incineration may become necessary incinerators are expensive to build and operate ashes and other unburnables must still be disposed of elsewhere as a community grows the incinerator becomes inadequate and additional disposal may revert to an open dump these flies that vomit on your food when they eat it breathe well here too now what can you as a good citizen do about this yes you first make sure that your personal responsibilities are taken care of wrap your wet garbage empty your garbage regularly and have enough cans with tight fitting lids in good condition and keep your containers clean of course this is just a start the refuse problem is not one that can be solved by a single individual it will take concerted action [Music] it is a community problem and must be handled as such a problem that grows bigger and bigger as people live closer and closer together if you care you can have this if you don't care you will have this it's all up to you that was uh some pretty hit jazz playing in the background with uh all that stinky maggot footage stinky puddle footage really nice um the other thing that's great about showing films like this is that we forget that there weren't such a thing as trash bags like you couldn't go and buy hefty plastic bags or whatever that it was you just kind of wrapped it in whatever you had in most cases what people had were newspapers uh and they so they would you know housewives would wrap things up and it would be it would soak through it and you had your little aluminum or steel cans um that you would put things in and that's just the way it was um and you wouldn't separate out your trash i mean that's what's something that we do you know there's recycling here but also we do compost we pay to compost i know some cities actually that's a service they offer as well and it's great because we actually get back composted material that we can plant uh stuff with or we can donate to other places so a lot of that stinkiness is actually composted and dealt with in a in a way that we can reuse it so it's interesting to kind of look at our trash how we dealt with our trash in the past um because it certainly informs us on how we will have to deal with trash in our future anyways that's me pontificating about trash i hope everybody had a good lunch and um we'll be back again tomorrow and we'll have some more films to show you it'll be a lot of fun and um thanks for tuning in and as always we look inside the film
