the turtle was alert when dangerous wasn't till he never got hurt he knew just what to do he's got shh and cover duck and cover [Music] be sure and remember what bert the turtle just did friends because every one of us must remember to do the same thing with this duck and cover this is an official civil defense film produced in cooperation with the federal civil defense administration and in consultation with the safety commission of the national education association produced by archer productions incorporated hey bert come on out and meet all these nice people please all right we really can't blame you you see bert is a very very careful fellow when there's danger this is the way he keeps from being hurt sometimes it even saves his life that's why these children are practicing to duck and cover just as you do in your school we all know the atomic bomb is very dangerous since it may be used against us we must get ready for it just as we are ready for many other dangers that are around us all the time fire is a danger it can burn whole buildings if someone is careless but we are ready for fires we have a fine fire department to put out the fire and you have fire drills in your school so you know what to do automobiles can be dangerous too they sometimes cause bad accidents but we are ready we have safety rules that car drivers and people who are walking must obey now we must be ready for a new danger the atomic bomb first you have to know what happens when an atomic bomb explodes you will know when it comes we hope it never comes but we must get ready it looks something like this there is a bright flash brighter than the sun brighter than anything you've ever seen if you were not ready and did not know what to do it could hurt you in different ways it could knock you down hard or throw you against a tree or a wall it is such a big explosion it can smash in buildings and knock sign boards over and break windows all over town but if you duck and cover like bert you will be much safer you know how bad sunburn can feel the atomic bomb flash could burn you worse than a terrible sunburn especially where you're not covered now you and i don't have shells to crawl into like bert the turtle so we have to cover up in our own way first you duck and then you cover and very tightly you cover the back of your neck and your face duck can cover underneath a table or desk or anything else close by in betty's school they are talking about the atomic bomb too betty is asking her teacher how can we tell when the atomic bomb may explode and a teacher is explaining that there are two kinds of attack with warning and without any warning we think that most of the time we will be warned before the bomb explodes so there will be time for us to get into our homes schools or some other safe place our civil defense workers and our men in uniform will do everything they can to warn us before enemy planes can bring a bomb near us you may be in your school yard playing when the signal comes that signal means to stop whatever you are doing and get to the nearest safe place fast always remember the flash of an atomic bomb can come at any time no matter where you may be you might be out playing at home when the warning comes then be sure to get into the house fast where your parents have fixed a safe place for you to go if you are not close to home when you hear the warning go to the nearest safe cover know where you are to go or ask an older person to help you you know the places marked with the s sign there are safe places to go when you hear the alarm if there is a warning you will hear it before the bomb explodes but sometimes and this is very very important sometimes the bomb might explode without any warning then the first thing we would know about it would be the flash and that means duck can cover fast wherever you are there's no time to look around or wait be like bert when there is a flash duck and cover and do it fast here are some older boys showing what to do if the flash comes when you are not in the classroom this is what to do if you should be in a corridor you duck and cover tight against the wall this way remember to keep your face in the back of your neck covered tightly try to fall away from windows or doors with glass in them then if the glass breaks and flies through the air it won't cut you you might be eating your lunch when the flash comes duck and cover under the table then if the explosion makes anything in the room fall down it can't fall on you getting ready means we will all have to be able to take care of ourselves the bomb might explode when there are no grown-ups near paul and patty know this and they're always ready to take care of themselves here they are on their way to school on a beautiful spring day but no matter where they go or what they do they always try to remember what to do if the atom bomb explodes right then it's a bomb duck and cover paul and patty know what to do paul covered the back of his head so that he wouldn't be burned and patty covered herself with the coat she was carrying they knew how to duck and cover they acted right away when the flash came if they had been at this doorway when the bomb flashed paul and patty would have ducked and covered this way like this girl heavy doorways are a good place to duck and cover she will be safer too here's tony going to his cub scout meeting tony knows the bomb can explode any time of the year day or night he is ready for it duck and cover atta boy tony that flash means act fast tony knows that it helps to get to any kind of cover this wall was close by so that's where he ducked and covered tony knew what to do notice how he keeps from moving or from getting up and running he stays down until he is sure the danger is over the man helping tony is a civil defense worker his job is to help protect us when there is danger of the atomic bomb we must obey the civil defense worker we must know how to duck and cover in the school bus or in any other bus or streetcar duck and cover don't wait tuck away from the windows fast the glass may break and fly through the air and cut you sundays holidays vacation time we must be ready every day all the time to do the right thing if the atomic bomb explodes duck and cover this family knows what to do just as your own family should they know that even a thin cloth helps protect them even a newspaper can save you from a bad burn but the most important thing of all is to duck and cover yourself especially where your clothes do not cover you no matter where we live in the city or the country we must be ready all the time for the atomic bomb duck and cover that's the first thing to do duck and cover the next important thing to do after that is to stay covered until the danger is over yes we must all get ready now so we know how to save ourselves if the atomic bomb ever explodes near us if you do not know just what to do ask your teacher when this film is over discuss what you could do in different places if a bomb explodes older people will help us as they always do but there might not be any grown-ups around when the bomb explodes then you're on your own remember what to do friends now tell me right out loud what are you supposed to do when you see the flash [Music] hello everybody this is bert the turtle hosting the av geeks lunchtime streaming show um skip is not available today so i'm taking over um so here's another film about turtles [Music] uh prehistoric monster she's a reptile and she's related to ancient dinosaurs but she's a modern-day sea turtle and she's on her way from cold ocean depths to a warm sandy beach she has strong flippers where other turtles have legs she can swim quickly when she has to but now she's going slowly her journey from the open sea has taken her many miles she's tired [Music] this is her destination early each summer she travels here if she arrives during daylight hours she remains in the water till the hot sun goes down [Music] then when cool evening approaches [Music] the turtle crawls ashore pulling her weight with great difficulty over the sand what would make her travel so far and work so hard she finds a spot on the beach to her liking now she begins using her flippers to clear a circle in the sand [Music] seems she's trying to build something [Music] so that's it she's digging a hole and a deep hole at that [Music] what can she be looking for [Music] perhaps she isn't looking for anything perhaps she wants to bury something [Music] so well into the night she digs tired exhausted barely able to keep her eyes open yet something called instinct makes her keep on going seen from behind the turtle sits over the hole that's an egg she has dug the hole as a nest in which to lay her eggs here come more mighty hard work for the mother turtle she has used a great deal of her energy yet somehow she finds the strength to keep going [Music] before the night is over she'll lay dozens of eggs now she's finished she pushes sand back into the hole to cover the eggs tired as she is she knows her work isn't done till the eggs are completely hidden she'll cover the nest so that snakes and other enemies that eat eggs can't see them [Music] [Music] there she's finished now she crawls back to the sea [Music] she'll never see the eggs again or know the babies that hatch from the eggs [Music] days and weeks pass then early one morning before sunrise on the 60th day after the turtle's eggs were laid the beach appears to be quiet and lifeless at first but watch the sand [Music] the first baby turtle to hatch crawls out of the nest and into the light of day [Music] then one after another his brothers and sisters join him [Music] and they all head in the same direction toward the sea [Music] somehow without being led they know where the ocean is and they go straight to it by instinct they never crawl the other way they never go inland uh-oh one falls and lands on his back but that doesn't stop the others one fellow is in such a hurry to reach water he doesn't care what he has to climb over to get there hey get your flipper out of my face phew that's better now help me turn over [Music] but his brother just keeps heading for the ocean [Music] dozens of young turtles crawling toward the sea for them a long crawl seldom if ever do they all make it to the water's edge many are seized on the way seized by birds and other animals that feed on young turtles but on this particular morning no enemies are in sight the closer they get to the sea the faster they seem to go their first taste of water in every crowd you find slowpokes ah the fall guy finally writes himself but can he reach the ocean before his enemies spot him he does [Music] each summer this story is repeated turtles live to be quite old in time these babies will become parents some will become mothers and like their mother before them they'll swim for miles from cool ocean depths to reach this very same beach here they'll lay their eggs the eggs will hatch and those newly hatched turtles will begin the cycle all over [Music] so that's wonderful that's how sea turtles are born uh as i said i am bert the turtle guesting hosting for uh skip who is normally here but is not here today uh let's watch this cartoon about the hair and the tortoise [Music] foreign [Music] so the fable of the hair and the tortoise the hair was bragging that he was the fastest animal in the woods he was so sure of himself that he went about to challenge in any one of the other animals to a race [Music] [Music] is [Music] do [Music] um [Music] none of the animals wanted to erase that hair no challengers until hmm the tortoise would race the hair no contest you say hmm day of the race was set the course was laid out everything was ready [Music] do [Music] um [Music] so [Music] [Music] the hair was fast and far ahead why time enough for a snack [Music] maybe even a little nap that log would stop the tortoise [Music] [Music] what do you know slow and sure step by step sweet dreams hair sweet dreams [Music] do [Music] [Music] well the tortoise is a winner slow and steady won the race and the hair with all that speed and bragging where did [Music] hey [Music] so that was a retelling of a very popular esop fable and this next film is about snapping turtles they're enjoy serious enemies along the bottom it leaves a trail in the sand with its webbed feet it paddles through the water as they push the water back it moves ahead notice the snapping turtles small under shell the bottom side is clean while the top hide is covered with algae snapping turtles usually carry leeches which are parasites the snapping turtle is really a land animal with lungs and must come to the surface for air the turtle blinks its beady eyes each has two eyelids poor eyesight notice that the turtle rises a little as its get filled with air and that it sinks a little as it breathes out in the water the snapping turtle is a gentle creature it has had enough air these turtles eat small animals but most of their diet may be water plants snapping turtle crawls out of the pond on land she trundles along slowly but surely she always has her coat of armor and when danger threatens she draws her head and legs under the shell nearby a painted turtle is also walking quietly along the shore its shell is clean even on the top side this is common with turtles that sun themselves regularly the painted turtle is more nearly covered all around with shell than is the snapping turtle painted turtles are gentle at all times here they meet they do not seem to be interested in each other a snapping turtle may find a mate at any time during the summer but she usually lays her eggs in early summer here she has found a good place to make a nest in the warm loose soil snapping turtles usually lay from 20 to 60 eggs at one time each season actually one to four minutes elapses between the laying of each egg notice how she uses a hind leg to arrange the egg in the nest the eggs are round and about the size of a five cent piece they are covered with a thin parchment-like shell this snapping turtle is laying her 37th and last egg then she scoops soil over the eggs with her hind legs she packs the dirt firmly over the eggs with a final scoop of dirt her work is finished she walks away and leaves the eggs her step is somewhat unsteady the eggs need no further care from her only warmth from the sun mother snapping turtle has finished her most important duty and is on her way back to the pond this looks like trouble the turtle strikes with her powerful jaws the dog is wise to keep his distance because a snap from the turtle's jaw could break his leg or nip off his nose when she is angry she will strike viciously at anything a few evenings later a skunk walks by the clearing where the snapping turtle laid her eggs soon the skunk discovers the nest of eggs like eggs the skunk quickly uncovers them with its front paws this is going to be a feast the skunk takes one egg and opens it now to enjoy a big dinner the skunk is startled for the time being the eggs are safe turtles are developing within the eggs the heart is beating and the shell has started to form now three months have passed since mother turtle laid her eggs one turtle egg is about to hatch the young turtle pushes its way out of the shell with its head and legs the membrane still surrounds the head now the young turtle is clear of the membrane down to the shoulders and gets its first gasp of air the turtle kicks and pushes violently soon it will be out of the shell the little turtle still has a large yolk sac on the underside this serves as food for the turtle while still in the shell it makes walking a little difficult even after hatching the yolk sac continues to supply food to the young turtle for several days for this reason the young turtles do not hunt food for a while but they do practice walking there seems to be an urge to get to water after a few days some of the young snappers have found their way to the pond usually the young snappers do not eat until they get into the water a bullfrog sitting quietly nearby is not disturbed by the tiny snappers there are also many bullfrog tadpoles in the pond this young turtle is now in search of food and here is a back swimmer ready no that one got away here is a dragonfly nymph this one won't get away the snapper uses its claws and jaws to tear its food mother snapping turtle passes by one of her offspring snapping turtles do not protect their young the only way she might be interested in them would be as an appetizer to a good meal this little fellow is really lucky here is a crayfish the crayfish is also on the lookout for food snapping turtles wait for animal food to come to them it looks as if the crayfish may lose a leg if so a new one will grow in its place the crayfish gets away the trees along the shore have lost their leaves cold weather is coming the snapping turtle starts digging a burrow at the pond bottom here there is less change in temperature than on dry land and less chance for freezing even though the pond freezes over the snapping turtle is below the frost line all winter long she hibernates in the bottom breathing and all other activities are almost stopped a thick blanket of snow covers the shore and the ice when spring comes again and as the water becomes warmer the snapping turtle begins to dig her way out from the borough food will soon be plentiful in the pond the snapping turtle's long winter hibernation has ended she is one year older now and is starting her round of activities again hello uh so that was about the snapping turtle the next film we're
