well that kind of ended um i mean so uh i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the avgeek's lunchtime streaming show uh uh basically with uh a-roll um and b-roll with 16-millimeter film you have one reel where you have footage and then you have black slug in between then you have more footage and then the b royal it kind of parallels and complements so wherever there's footage on the a-roll there's black slug on the b-roll and then wherever there's black slug on the a-roll there's footage on the b-roll and so that's what that was but that slug seemed to last too long and it just seemed like all right well maybe i don't need to show that so here we are welcome uh we watch old 60 millimeter films so that footage was originally shot it's from a camera original uh and they edited it up uh so that they could make a print uh and um which you would eventually see with a soundtrack so there was no sound um recorded uh when they shot that footage um so there you go this next film has sound and doesn't have large segments of slug and is a series of little short little uh vignettes uh i think by dot maybe by um uh nim i can't remember exactly it's a government agency and it's about drinking and about teenagers so here we go [Music] [Music] she's really nice don't you wish i saw you down over there in the cafeteria looks like you're having fun yeah we were getting along all right yeah i look like us i'm going to ask you all out sometime if i can you know get her to go with me why don't you bring her over to my place saturday oh with your parents there they're not going to be there we can have a party party yeah you need some beer yeah can you bring some yeah how much do you want the more the better hey joe hi you want to go to george's car even saturday sure that sounds like fun i'll go with you okay what time should i pick you up when's the start bring some beer can you drive yeah i can get my mother's car i'm going with pete hey katie can you get some beer for george's party saturday night sure my brother can get it how much do you want how about four or six banks i think we should have some crunchies how are we gonna get there we gotta get some more cars hey shag what's happening hear about my party yeah that sounds really far gonna come sure good hey seeing that you're coming how'd you like drive well i don't know if i could drive this weekend why not i've had the car a few times already this week i don't know if i could get it oh poor baby you can get the car anytime you want it i i just don't know if i want to drive why well something might happen what could happen yeah what could happen [Music] look at talking off to the dance spot hey isn't that kathy and marcy hey yeah kathy hey kathy marshall hi why don't you come over here come on over here hello how are you doing how's it going have a chat why don't you join us have a seat okay brings you out here we're celebrating my birthday 18th birthday you're kidding me hey that means you got to have a beer how about you okay fine okay i can see okay hey you know what happened in the parking lot tell me tell me come on there's this fight out there you know bill scott um he's in english with us is that right or history english english he sits in the front of our english classes he was fighting with this other guy was it over a girl a girl with long black hair she was standing by a car there he sucked him so hard right in the air [Music] happy birthday dear mercy happy birthday to you cheers [Music] drink hey i have a suggestion what suggestion are you ready why don't we all play buns wow okay guys you know how to play yeah fantastic why don't you start okay one two three oh drink up drink you happy birthday you get during two don't you think okay four five six months twice in a row drink off drink up try everyone drinking [Music] your pretty birthday again eleven fourteen drinks she's getting drunk i got talent already [Music] 12. could but would he let me drive this new car you know it's a new datsun and i didn't know if he'd like that well might be worth a try hey let's talk one for the road okay ready go hi hey we're ready to go let's let's move on hey is everybody ready it's your birthday well we came to a decision we'll come with you if i can drive oh come on i'm a good driver i can't do that i know you can but i just want to drive a dog [Music] where are the keys is nancy though okay hi nancy this is morrissey listen i know you're planning on picking us up later but while the guys are with are kind of drunk and we don't want them to drive us home so could you come out now they're just some guys from our english class okay yeah 15 minutes we'll be just fine okay thanks a lot bye-bye nice huh i wonder what happened there um kind of interesting i i like the uh um how each of the narratives each of the little triggers kind of lead to the next one so that there is like a continuous arc narrative arc there it's kind of great um got something set up here on the telecity it's to have a friend be a friend and this film has a lot of sprocket damage that was repaired with us perfix which is a white tape that kind of goes over and tries to clean up the sprocket tears but what happens is that over a period of time that tape begins to shift and warp and so it's it has some rough moments um and it looks like the title was also gone so someone some teacher ran this through a projector and really didn't know how to thread a projector and just kind of shredded it so here we go [Music] everyone is friendly and fun and everyone is going to be nice to you welcome have a friend you got to be branded as simple as it can be quiet try it and you'll see [Music] them hey who's going to get the ball not me not me not me he's dorm can you get our ball back what from him are you crazy wait if you're b you can grab the ball well okay well everyone thought i guess we'll just have to get along without our ball too bad the meanie ruined our fun someday i hope he learns his lesson someday he'll need someone's help and no one will want to help him well being cooperative and friendly every day is a good habit to get into because someday you may need a friend to help you well our old meanie was about to learn his lesson once and for all [Music] [Music] my two [Applause] [Music] oh he was in a fine fix first of all he never brushed his teeth and now we had a toothpaste oh wow my two fursuit won't anyone help it hurt and second of all he was never very nice and now no one would help him no one felt sorry for him at all [Music] um what's happening [Music] he didn't brush his teeth too bad [Music] hey guys what's so funny the crocodile has a toothache oh ow don't laugh his teeth hurt you wanna know why we're laughing he's mean never plays with us oh like truth don't make fun of pain try to help it's his fault he should brush his teeth like we do up and down up and down see yes up and down up and down and all around up and down and all around i didn't think it was important to brush my teeth and now i'm sorry won't one of you help me i'll be nice i promise if you'll just help me this once ow it hurts [Music] me help the crocodile not me me either now no one wanted to go and help him because no one believed him they only remembered how mean he always was open wide but he was very lucky someone was willing to help and began to clean his teeth she wasn't a bit afraid she said most people want to be friendly some just don't know how everyone was surprised to see the little bird and the meanie getting along so well [Music] she found all kinds of things [Music] the old meanie had been so bad about brushing his teeth that now one of his teeth had to come out the friendly bird found the aching tooth [Music] my only friend thank you thank you may i be your friend can you believe it thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you now maybe you'll brush your teeth twice a day after meal [Music] okay okay can we be friends to have a friend you have to be a friend and practice being a friend every day to have a friend you have to always try to be a good good friend be a real good friend you have good friends lots of good [Music] friends [Music] where everyone likes to give where they share together and play together just like where you live well youtube was not being a friend um it basically blocked me for that last film um on on youtube so i'm going to ask some questions until the stream comes back uh what do we got here uh after viewing the film how many different kinds of birds and animals did you see in the film what could crocodile have done to show that he was really friendly crocodile learned two lessons can you tell about both of them which of [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so this is a story of how people and things are moved from place to place a story of transportation in today's world a story in which speed and time and distance are of great importance in the world of yesterday men could not speed themselves or their goods from one place to another travel took time great amounts of time and distance was often a barrier to travel men had to depend on the wind on their own efforts or on animals transportation of the past was slow and time consuming but over thousands of years men developed it from what it was to what it is today travel is faster today and great distances no longer prevent the movement of people and things from place to place this is transportation today and it is important in many ways modern transportation is important to industry let's look at this steel mill here are some railroad cars filled with coke for the mill and nearby is a ship filled with iron ore the mill must have coke made from coal and iron ore to operate raw materials come from mine several hundreds of miles away transportation makes it possible to locate factories long distances from their sources of raw materials the products of this mill will go long distances too modern transportation also makes this possible raw materials and finished products can be transported quickly from place to place by train because of modern rail transportation great loads of materials can be moved overland with ease raw materials and finished products can go by boat along rivers across lakes and over oceans again great loads can be moved modern shipping is not affected by winds as much as shipping of the past was smaller loads that have shorter distances to go can travel by truck along roads and highways where time and distance are major factors small loads can be moved rapidly by airplane yes modern transportation makes it possible for users everywhere to share both raw materials and finished products because of modern transportation factories can be located almost anywhere producing goods for people almost everywhere modern transportation is important to people who must travel from one place to another this boy depends on a bus to get him quickly to school several miles away [Music] modern transportation is important too when people want to travel away from where they live to visit to sightsee to get to vacation spots or for business they can go by bus or car over roads and highways which reach every community in our country they can go by trains which connect all the major cities and many smaller towns and communities travel by air is fastest and especially important as a time saver when great distances must be covered over land or water ships provide comfortable and safe means of travel over water when the traveler is not in a hurry to reach his destination many of our simpler forms of transportation are used mostly for pleasure sailboats row boats canoes bicycles and horses too so you can see that means of transportation can give us pleasure as well as carry us from place to place transportation is vital to the existence of cities it helps to keep the business of the city going means of transportation in the city are complex and varied there are buses which follow certain routes making most parts of a city especially its business area easy to reach taxi cabs and private cars can go more directly to places in the city along the streets that connect all its parts in the very large cities there are subway trains and elevated trains that run over or under street traffic along more permanent routes than buses they carry large numbers of people quickly from place to place trains carry people into the city from the suburbs where they live directly to the business section of the city where they work so it's easy to see that cities couldn't get along without many means of transportation to carry people quickly from place to place within and near the city but transportation is important to a city for more than this it is also necessary for bringing important goods into a city here are docks in the city where ships come from many places to unload cargo and to load cargo to carry to other places here are freight yards where great trains come from all parts of the country with goods for the city where new trains are formed for taking goods to other cities trucks come into the city each day with foods grown on nearby farms without this food the people of a great city would starve so you can see that this city depends on transportation to bring important goods to it from outside all cities depend on transportation for this reason no great city could exist without the many means of transportation in use today and many cities have become great because they've become centers of transportation some cities on lakes and oceans and rivers became great ports other cities became great as rail centers transportation has helped bring greatness to our cities and to our nation highways are everywhere cars and buses and trucks can travel to every tiny town and major city of our land rivers and lakes are highways for ships carrying great cargos highways of rails carry long trains of people and goods from one place to another the air is a great highway for airplanes making places which were formally days apart now only hours apart transportation links most parts of our country and because of its great importance we are always trying to improve our forms of transportation think of how the automobile has been improved [Music] and the train [Music] and steamships [Music] and airplanes the use and development of modern means of transportation has helped our country become wealthy and take its place as a major power in the world community [Music] our nation's near and distant parts are tied together people products and raw materials can be carried quickly and easily from place to place we have increased the comfort of travel shortened the time of travel and overcome the barriers of distance modern transportation ties our nation and the world closer together [Music] i love it beautiful travel footage and transportation footage so great big fan of films like that um you know especially ones that show how trains used to look and airplanes used to look and commercial air travel what that used to look like um really great all right uh so this one uh we're gonna it's a it's a downer uh but it's a it's a film that uh i had i got in the first big batch of stuff that um when i got 500 films for 50 this was in that batch and uh features martin milner and is uh follows a young man's descent into narcotics addiction um i have many films that kind of do that and this one was requested by stewart um weeks ago i finally got it so here it is narcotics pit of despair mark milner he was on emergency he was on i think route uh also freaks and geeks i think here we go narcotics uh bit of despair oh wait maybe it wasn't martin milner it's the guy that was on emergency anyways here we go and to focus the projector on the careless the unwary the unprotected no sane person would deliberately expose himself to its men no intelligent person would venture within striking distance of its fangs yet today young people are flirting with a poison every bit as deadly as that of the snake [Music] [Music] so [Music] one of the potentials for illegal drug traffic is the school here the connection can be found with these peddlers of misery who prey on the unwary the uninformed the curious the thrill seekers most young people will continue through life as normal responsible citizen others the shunted and unloved the unguided the seekers of thrills and kicks are candidates for the slave world of lifelong drug addiction but no one is immune how does it happen where does it start what are the signs the pattern is generally the same take a lack of responsibility the inability to make right choices add to it ignorance and indifference and top it off with a desire for escapism and kicks the sun total is then conceivably found in the bennies the reefer the pop needle take john scott he'd be the first to laugh at the thought of his being hooked sure before the last exam he took a couple of venies to pep him up but so what everybody knows a couple can't do any harm what he should have known is that not only are barbiturates dangerous to his nervous system but they destroy the inner resources he has now to overcome the obstacles of daily life but he's too busy with his girl his car his sports [Music] the little problems he has don't seem too important he knows he's failing in english and on the borderline in math but he's not really worried he knows he'll be okay on the next exam sure he'd be willing to come for extra instruction on saturday but saturday's his practice day [Music] he's doing well in track and he feels he will do better with more training and practice he might even get to represent the school in the state finals but word has come down that his grades aren't too good unless he pulls them up he can be put off the team a normal enough problem with a normal enough solution hit the books a little harder get a little help and pull them up it will mean giving up some fun and weekends but he knows he can do it if necessary he can cram a few days before the exam and even pep himself up on benny's he handled him before and he knows where to draw the line he knows he'll never go beyond that step but someone else knows john has taken his first step toward drugs someone who is willing to help him take the second and that's where eventually he becomes a member of that tight society of drug addicts to john it seems perfectly natural and innocent to bump into an old classmate he hasn't seen pete since he dropped out of school last year [Music] from the looks of him he seems to be doing well on his out of town selling job what john doesn't know is the selling job is pushing dope and the long absence from town their accidental meeting calls for a little celebration and pete has just the thing there's a little private party going on tonight plenty of fun and laughs take a break little it sounds good but today's his father's day off and john needs his help with some school problems if there's another party sometime maybe he can make it then but pete isn't interested in some time or maybe or squares if you want to swing call him right now he's got to split he's got to find fish ready to be hooked victims to supply him with money for the heroin he needs today and tomorrow and tomorrow [Music] compared to pete's problems john's are nothing poor grades expulsion from the team the frustrations and responsibilities of growing up seem important only to himself all he needs is a little help a little guidance a little understanding but the help the guidance the understanding are not there when he needs it his parents are away just when he was counting on them to be home his problems must wait for tomorrow or he can solve them tonight alone only he can go just so far alone during his childhood he was loved helped it suddenly that's all gone now he's in a man's body he's expected to be a man to stand alone on his own two feet this he will gladly do but he needs a little push he needs someone to help him over the hump of school work that's troubling him today he's had it the studies can wait until tomorrow he knows he can finish them then what he doesn't know is behavior habits forms long ago are now taking over the practice of putting things off making excuses jerking unpleasant tasks is strongly etched in his character it's saturday night and everyone else is out having fun it's the best excuse in the world to join the party [Music] to john the party is swinging just the thing he needs to pep him up the stage is set the principal players are in position the curtain is up john doesn't realize it but he has just been cast as the star fall guy in a real life tragedy [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] the exertion of the dance the excitement of helen and several beers have taken effect inhibition and caution are forgotten when helen suggests they have a few more beers he's all for him why not everyone else is doing it to refuse would be square and that terrible label must be avoided at all costs besides he's never been high on it before and he never will he can handle the stuff the only trouble is he can't handle so much under the influence of the beer helen comes through is much more friendly he's flattered by her attentions and her interest in him if he could see her arms scarred by the needle marks he would know she's a hype if he could see her police record he would know she works for pete pete and helen know their parts well they've been through it before and they know the time is right throw out the sucker bait it's time for the next step the next step is the garage there some of the gang are really blasting that's where the real action is come on and take a look take a trip from squaresville live a little and see what it's like for yourself the senses are dulled just enough to be reckless helen the music the beer the promise of excitement press in on him now curiosity has to be satisfied and why not it can't do any harm to look [Music] hey [Music] this is the real action the pot party the trippers the grasshoppers the hip ones all gathered in secrecy and flying high as a kite outside the boundaries of their phony world of kicks is the ever-present possibility of discovery this must be avoided at all costs for discovery brings with it the penalties of society shame arrest prison so destroy the evidence leave not a trace burn it and paper trash that way they can deny possessing the illegal marijuana they can say the flaming can is part of a game they can lie they can swear this time the gang's lucky it's not the law or discovery or problems it's just their supplier pete with his number one chick and a new guy looking for kicks forget it man and get with the countdown shake this square world and blast off for kicksville [Music] to john his first pot party looks exciting everyone seems to be having fun best of all there are no parents no other adults no one to interfere with the fun [Music] the feeling of importance of belonging of putting one over is taking hold pete intends to tighten that hole to squeeze it to hook it to lock it in now is the time to introduce the joints but pete has learned the rules well a pusher can never be caught with the stuff on him instead he must leave it stage it get it from a flunky [Music] this is the test the time to separate the man from the board john's will power individuality character are slipping down the drain in their place come the old behavior habits and excuses everybody else is doing it if he can handle bennies and beer he should be able to handle a few harmless puffs just to see what it's like the natural defenses are crumbling the barriers of caution are beaten down drag it man try anything once fly you can't get a habit from weed quit whenever you like don't be chicken come on man with it under the proddings of the gang the effects of the atmosphere and beer the desire to belong he chooses to go along john surrenders his dignity and lays his future on the chopping block not whether it's good or bad or right or wrong but if he stopped to think he would see the stupidity of it all now he's too involved to think he's having kicks he's away and flying up up out of this world [Music] but everything that goes up must come down when john came down he landed with a thud due to the effects of the alcohol and the late hours at the party the following day he was too tired too sick to study now facing another school day he finds the same problems the same responsibilities are still with him as well as arguments traffic violations and as the days go by he looks for more kicks more escape from the troubles he brings on himself each time he feels the need for kicks or he's troubled he returns to marijuana he knows that marijuana isn't physically addicting he doesn't know he's become psychologically dependent on it but he's not worried he knows he can handle it in time the continued use of marijuana causes psychic and physiological changes in his body while under the influence of marijuana his blood pressure increases he feels unusual hunger and his central nervous system changes his perception of depth and dimensions is radically changed a low curb appears as a precipice with a distortion of sight and sound time is suspended fast action appears slow the whole world when the big blow comes angry resentful humiliated sinking into the pit of despair and he needs help to pull himself out but where should he look for it who should he ask the coach won't give him a break the teacher ah he's already failed him so why keep on with studies his parents they don't understand anything religion what a laugh that would give the gang those resources and others are available to him but he thinks only a pal can help help split this square world help him forget everything and everybody he's been dragging the weed now long enough to want to try a bigger kick in his present frame of mind the bigger the better psychologically he's ready to make the big c his pals have introduced new props and he's anxious to examine caution intelligence normal defenses go up in pot smoke hank is a real hype a hooked mainliner beyond hope he is long past getting any kicks from marijuana his body is conditioned to heroin one of the most powerful dangerous drugs known to man so dangerous that its importation even for medical uses has been banned in the united states since nineteen twenty five every day the cost of his habit rises eighty dollars ninety dollars a hundred dollars a day and more every day he must have increasing amounts of the drug to get it he will lie steal murder even trap the innocent the outfit that he uses is the drug addict's only friend with it he can exist in his living hell until the next fix without it he will suffer the unbearable torches of withdrawal from the drug to prepare the venom for his bloodstream he empties heroin onto the spoon every grain is precious and cannot be spilled or wasted [Music] a few drops of water are added to make a solution [Music] then the small wad of cotton usually dirty is placed on the spoon to serve as a filter the solution is then drawn through the cotton filter and into the needle this cotton is saved and used again and again or if the addict is ever caught without the drug he can cook the cottons and squeeze out a small amount this is it then the big time the main line the high point of every drug addict's existence of every thousand heights who ride the toboggan to hell only a few ever get on [Music] of course pete is careful not to let john see the actual needle pop that is hidden ignored bypassed instead only the fun the kicks the real blast is played up the tourniquet is quickly tied and secured [Music] the vein is enlarged [Music] the hype is ready all sanitary precautions are ignored and normal hygiene protections are out all addicts run the risk of infecting themselves with tetanus hepatitis venereal and other diseases but in a race with time to stop withdrawal he doesn't think of such things right now all that matters is the dirty needle the germ-infested cotton the poisonous drug [Music] by now john is psychologically ready for stronger drugs to his confused brain the idea of joining hank in a bigger kick is highly enticing it would be all right to try it just once just to see what it's really like the only thing is the ugly looking needle the vague uncertain fear of maybe getting hooked his pal laughs at his fear of a little needle a small pop doesn't hurt it only makes you fly besides only squares get hooked the hit guys are just occasional users you blast every once in a while and quit whenever you like a few pops now and then can't possibly hurt the idea of a real kick without getting hooked takes hold john isn't afraid and he certainly isn't square the chain reaction has reached the end of the line he's handled alcohol goofballs marijuana now he's positive he can handle one little pump [Music] but something seems to have gone wrong the excuse of it can't happen to me was all right for the first pop and the second and the third but the more heroin he shoots the more tolerance his body builds and the more he needs he needs a shot now and he needs it badly but this is the last one after he's feeling better he'll quit never touch the stuff again hank immediately recognizes the withdrawal symptoms in john nervousness nausea watering eyes running nose too bad but his pal pete isn't around to fix him up hank needs every grain he has for his own fix there's nothing to do but wait till pete comes with more stuff in the meantime sweat it out pal you wanted kicks now pay the price [Music] at first it all seemed like such harmless fun it was hit to go along with the gang but where's the gang now why aren't they with him when he needs the most too late he realizes that by joining to belong he's more alone than ever this is the one trip he must take all alone only he himself can experience the unbearable agony of withdrawal ultimately he will feel chills and burns violent muscular cramps will rack his torch body he will vomit and then wretch in uncontrollable convulsions the agony will reach its peak in 36 to 72 hours then continue for two more weeks in the meantime he must obey the rules of the drug addict's world of secrecy his screams of pain can bring discoveries worst of all they can bring the law and forcible denial of the hell drug addicts must have so cool it cut it strangle it in the jungle land of narcotics it's fight claw kill and every man for himself the demons of withdrawal pains have increased their torture they run rampant through his body and prepare to multiply themselves hundreds of times again ironically the only relief from his demons is through the very poison that originally hooked him the same heroin that will bind him ever more tightly to his living hell but the blessed temporary delivery is not given through any noble charitable motives it's just the final step in pete's carefully laid plan he's made another junkie and another source of money now with the hook in deep he twists it to make sure the victim will never get away now that john has experienced the horrors of withdrawal he will make sure he gets his junk every day his pal pete will be glad to supply him but only for money plenty of money for in the vicious racket that preys on human misery there is no trust no credit no mercy it's cash on the line or the unbearable agony of withdrawal [Music] how to get the money presents tremendous problems to secure this money john must now do things he would never dream of doing before he was hooked first he sold his wristwatch then his hi-fi today it's his mother's best silverware [Music] although always pressed for more and more money to support his habit john must preserve outward appearances every day he must go through the motions the pretense of living a normal life no one must ever know he's a hopeless junkie but the law enforcement officers ever alert to the deadly drug traffic are about to know helen the swinger the hip chick of the gang has been picked up for shoplifting in a downtown store her previous arrests for shoplifting and prostitution her addiction to narcotics weigh heavily against her but the shame the stigma the prison sentence she faces are of sacrifice now her immediate problem is getting another fix to hold off the terrible withdrawals in police custody she knows a fix is impossible so she will settle for the next best thing and cooperate with the law [Music] she will sell the gang her friends her soul for the help she needs to face the coming withdrawal tortures swiftly acting on her lead those of the law strike back and another small tentacle of the drug octopus is cut off but the infected victims still go on with a police record to haunt him as long as he lives john uses the leniency of the law sometimes allowed first offenders so he enters a government hospital for the very best treatment modern science can give [Music] months later the agony of withdrawals the care the treatments are behind him now that he's kicked the habit he can try to pick up the pieces of his characters kevin t that's who it was kevin t and kevin was also in freaks and geeks uh and i don't know if he was on route 66 or not um so anyways uh so i'm gonna have a special guest host tomorrow i won't be here but somebody else will be here and um so uh but i will be back on monday and everybody have a great show tomorrow it's a it's a special one to kind of um watch especially themed uh the
