oopsy daisy sorry i hope the screen wasn't uh dark for too long but uh yeah so that was uh some more stock footage from the coronet library and um i'm skip alzheimer and this is the av geeks lunchtime streaming show at stock footage is silent but is beautiful kodachrome so i'm happy that we got to show it um somebody some folks noticed that some of the images were reversed and so how does that happen well this footage is since it's raw camera materials it is got perfs on both sides of the frame so when somebody assembled it um they accidentally inverted it um they'd probably you know was probably an intern or probably someone who was just like tasked with like here's a bunch of outs go ahead and build them up together on a reel and uh when we scan it we try to locate uh if the image is reading right and we can if there's text but um as you could tell like one of the scenes was one way and the other scene was the other way so we we couldn't really figure that out so we kind of split the difference anyhow um it's tuesday and we got a lot of films to watch uh yesterday was great we got i realized we watched a bunch of films i had never seen before so i was really excited to kind of do that um this next film is actually on the telecity it's called helicopter helpers enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] so the helicopter has many uses and one of the most important is carrying people you can take a jet plane from city to city and fly at 600 miles an hour but when you go from the city to smaller towns ones without airports you'd ride a different type of jet a jet helicopter [Music] it has pilots but they have special training to fly this special type of airplane la helicopter control la airways flight 717 request west takeoff right turn then southeastbound 717 cleared is requested for takeoff [Music] it's an airplane too but its wings are on top when the jet engine spins the wings they create lift they lift you into the air [Music] roger [Music] once you leap into the air you fly like the birds do directly from one point to another other planes use long runways and slowly climb and turn but this helicopter is a bus that flies moving right out over the crowded roads above the traffic and stop lights the pilots look down on the roads and are able to radio warnings of accidents or traffic jams but there are many other kinds of helicopters helping today the sheriff and the police use them as flying patrol cars suppose you were taking a walk in the desert it can be fun with odd-looking plants many unusual things but the fun could end suddenly when you turn around and there's no one there you're alone lost your dad could probably follow your trail but that's slow there is a quicker way [Music] the sheriff could see a stolen car and chase it for 50 miles before he could catch up [Music] but he can radio ahead to the new kind of patrol car have it race ahead and block the way bringing the chase to a quick halt [Music] you're under arrest get up against that car [Music] oil field workers usually drive their cars out to the oil well when they go to work but sometimes they have to take a taxi [Music] why would they need to take a helicopter out to an oil when your oil well is 50 or 60 miles out at sea the only way to get to work quickly is by helicopter by whirlybird [Music] oil shows up in many places all over the world there is a pool of it under this swampy south american jungle but there are no roads to bring in drilling tools the mud is deep and thick how do the oil drillers move in with all their heavy equipment this 12-ton bulldozer was flown in piece by piece everything comes in by air even the houses [Music] sheep ranchers have a new way of getting around their range too strays that get lost can be picked up and brought back to the herd but sheep and sheep ranchers have one big enemy the coyote coyotes get hungry and kill thousands of animals each year ranchers have to keep the coyote from eating the whole flock of sheep unfortunately there's only one way to do if you have ever dreamed of being a cowboy you'd better take riding lessons and flying lessons the new cowboy rides up over the cattle and when roundup time comes he's the one who gathers the herd and moves them toward the corral there's nothing new about running or through pipes you can just lay them on the ground but what if the ground drops from under you drops three thousand rocky feet down to the bottom of the grand canyon how do you get the people the pipes and the tools down to the bottom [Music] the men of the coast guard are still saving lives [Music] they still use boats but now some of their boats fly they can move a lot faster in the air than they can on the water if you're in the water and have to swim for it a few minutes saved can mean your life being saved the helicopter has only been in use for a few years but it's become a bus taking people from the city to the towns and it's become a taxi taking government leaders to their meetings but it does more than just carry people and packages every day a new job comes up for the whirlybird newer helicopters are being built to carry more and fly faster than ever before what do you think the helicopter will do next [Music] [Music] [Music] i love it such a good uh good film lots of wonderful late 60s uh footage and i think that um at that point the idea was that there was going to be more helicopter uh air travel commercial air travel and i think that that didn't happen um for the most part i think that uh i'm not sure why but i think uh in the late 60s you know that was during vietnam and vietnam had a lot of helicopters and um there was maybe there was a golden age of helicopters during that point i mean i'm not sure what it is i'm really just kind of pulling that out of my butt because i don't know um here's a great film i got on ebay it's actually part two of a film or part three of a film that i have about communism and um this is communism what can we do about it [Music] this is the third of three films in which i have been talking to you about communism and socialism in this one i'm going to answer the question that is often asked me what can we do about it well as the title background you just saw suggest if we are going to hoot you i say that because so many good people say to me well i'm just an ordinary person living an ordinary life i don't even know any communists what can i do well maybe that's what you're thinking right now i hope so because then you're exactly the kind of person we made this film for to make it easy to organize and to remember our various points i'm going to flash them on the wall like this what we can do the first important thing you can do is to be sure you know what communism really is and how socialism ties in with it in other words know your enemy above all get understanding know both communism and socialism for what they are and what they are not how they operate what their goals are why some people are attracted to them well how do you go finding out the facts like every other step i shall give you it's easy once you start while you've made a good beginning already if you've seen the other two films in this series that's the title of the first one what is communism you'll know why jay gahuba warns it's the greatest threat in our world today and the second film what's the difference between communism and socialism you'll find out that socialism is not a softer substitute or possible prevention for communism but may lead to it there are good books on the subject waiting for you at your public library or at least there should be this is only one of many sources of course but it's a good one and it's near at hand we'll touch on other sources in connection with the next thing you can do and that is help others understand be so well informed that people will seek you out for help this is an important contribution and again i want to emphasize how easy it is for you to perform a real service whoever you are wherever you are discuss the red menace with your neighbors your friends your business associates your fellow students it's no problem to introduce this subject why the news and any paper you pick up will serve as a springboard besides having a new understanding yourself of stories like these you'll be able to provide background information to your friends not found in day-to-day reports what do you belong to service club trade association cultural group farm bureau church school pta sewing circle there are thousands of ready-made audiences who who welcome programs and speakers movies graphic material find out what's available and propose it to your organization again there are many sources but here's one address right to the national education town your community and your circle of friends next step become politically active american citizenship not only represents freedom and opportunities it also imposes duties and responsibilities this doesn't mean necessarily run for office although some of you who are qualified should do that too what it does mean is get out and vote but but what there's an old saying that we get the kind of government we deserve and they then add so whatever you do vote but simply to vote is not enough the right to vote is important but equally important is know what you're voting for study the issues study the candidates and then work to elect the right officials officials who are dedicated to the basic principles that have made america great surely it is obvious that the only way our country will ever come out of this cold war alive is to elect officials who will pledge to move positively and fairly to protect our freedom and then see that they do it you have a first class persuader to help you do this it's right in your own home it's your fountain pen or your typewriter public officials pay attention to letters after all you elected them to represent you you should tell them how you want to be represented write them when you want them to do something write them when they do something you don't like and when they have stood up for something you do like we'll drop them a note of appreciation how many good for you letters have you written your elected representatives that's a good tool too let's use it more often to do these things right at the right time you must be alert and please note the sequence you learn to be on the alert after you know your enemy and after you become politically active you learn what you are to be alert for are you a factory worker a member of a union a trade association a service club or a church be alert to spot anyone promoting the communist line and working their way into some position of authority they may not actually be commies themselves they may not even be fellow travelers they may be only communist dukes but they are dangerous are you a student or a teacher well write to your congressman for a copy of j edgar hoover's report communist target youth see how on direct orders from moscow the party is in a drive to get communist speakers into our colleges and universities taking advantage of american academic freedom and the students naturally inquiring minds their aim is to preach revolutionary tactics and change peaceful campuses into scenes like this the communist incited student riots in san francisco communist agents make more progress where they can first make trouble once you understand the kami line you can readily recognize it when it appears the one spreading it may not be a party member himself he may even be someone who doesn't know he is being used one of their many tricks is to get you to agitate against something so you see there are things for you to do and there are things not to do be on the alert to circumvent subversive activity of any kind wherever you encounter it but and this is also important leave the communist hunting itself to the fbi they are trained in this sort of thing they appreciate any facts you can give them but please let them do the investigating and one thing more let's not call anyone a communist just because he happens to disagree with us and be doubly alert when the communists start hunting you that's right no matter who you are you have your own circle of influence so the commies want you they have a variety of approaches any one of them may sound reasonable even commendable just don't ever agree to join any committee or support any cause or sign any petition or allow your name to be used in any manner until you know the whole story who's behind it what their real objectives are for instance not long ago i picked up a pamphlet and here i find a long bitter blast against our internal security act glass through the list of names and i was shocked to see some of these names i can well imagine how they were obtained one day a telephone rang hello is this mr fred c harthen yes mr harthen i'm calling you from the headquarters of the national assembly for democratic right dr lew baker suggested i called you who dr sam lubaker you know him don't you oh yes certainly we are organizing a list of sponsors we'd like to use your name besides dr lou baker our backers include leonard ricks b.j merkel what did you say the committee was the national assembly for democratic rights i'm sure you're for free speech free press freedom of worship oh yeah fine thank you dr and i'll give dr lubaker your regards if i may goodbye just like that huh but he already had lou baker rick smirkel and now he has you and will get more with your name you have all signed for one of the notorious communist fronts cited by the house committee on un-american activities as using the bill of rights plea to attack our internal security act don't let the communists use you please don't be a doop anyway that's the way i wrote it in my notes you know even my secretary can't uh always read my handwriting and so when she typed it it came out please don't be a dope and you know her words pretty good too well now in summary this is what you can do know your enemy help others understand become politically active get out and vote but know what you are voting for work to elect the right officials be alert there are many things to do and there are things not to do and to that list i am going to add one more be constant perhaps this is the most difficult of all and often it's the most important the other night i was rereading a letter dated 1900 years ago a man named paul was writing to some of his friends in galatia but the exhortation is just as apt today let us not be weary in well-doing for a due season we shall reap if we faint not i believe that i believe something else too and to those of you of similar belief in closing i would say at least once each day we should pray for guidance in living up to our mission as a child of god in our duties as an american citizen that too we can do will you join me [Music] [Music] [Music] so great i had missed the first time i watched that that the fact that uh his handwriting's not very good [Music] so don't be a dupe or don't be a dope you know it both work works both ways but uh it's fascinating so um the uh i don't have the films but a rick trellinger has several of those uh those films that are mentioned by the national education program in arkansas and uh they're fascinating but they're super boring because they're basically lectures with very little um [Music] i don't know it's i think it's a little bit i think that what we just saw was a little bit more interesting because it's shorter because these other lectures are 30 minutes long and it's basically some old dude that you saw the podium lecturing a bunch of college students um but uh yeah so i got another film um set up and this one is very stinky of vinegar and uh if you don't know uh vinegar syndrome is a problem with a lot of these films that were printed on acetate base so uh traditionally it was nitrate which was flammable and problematic um then when 16 came out they came out with safety footage and they started putting it on acetate then much later they put it on polyester like i think in the 80s and they all have their own little problems with acetate it breaks down based on temperature and humidity and also maybe based on how it was washed at some point there's some people have theories about that um so it makes acetic acid which is a vinegar smell and so this is stinky and what it means is it's beginning to shrink and beginning to warp a little bit so we'll see how this next film we make butter comes off here we go enjoy and see how butter is made well this is the story [Music] dick and jane are visiting on cousin billy's farm this summer that fresh country air makes them hungry in the middle of the morning but aunt ruth billy's mother knows what boys and girls like yes indeed [Music] or does she what's the matter dick don't you like your milk it looks just like mine [Music] something in it let me have a look oh that's just butter fat oh it is not but dick isn't sure he is hearing right [Music] that's right it's good thick cream you make butter out of it and it's good for you too butter out of this sure billy knows where butter comes from drink your milk and he'll show you [Music] dick is doubtful about the butter i don't know [Music] but there's no doubt about the cookies and ruth is in the cool milk house where all the milk and cream is kept getting ready to make butter this morning billy brings his cousins in to see how we make butter and ruth is willing get some jars and you can help make budget one jar two jars three jars now look the first thing is to be sure the cream is the right temperature that means not too hot not too cold this is a thermometer when the pointer is on the 50 mark the temperature is right for making butter and now we go to work so it is the cream that is used to make the butter you know you know that cream rises to the top of milk and can be skimmed off just like this into the jars it goes all ready now for the fun [Music] the farmer takes a wife hold the cherry hole the farmer takes away that's it just look at billy oh yes and look at dicky [Music] are we getting tired already no not yet better makers it will take a little more shaking now shake it that's it and root come quick see those yellow lumps in jane's jar yes indeed that is butter [Music] see that gold rich butter now watch the same thing happen in the big church big churns have dashers to shake the cream around see the dasher turn [Music] andrew turns the butter round and round and round [Music] what did we tell you there is the butter stuck on the dasher rich gold butter out of the big churn then all the milk must be worked out of the butter with a wooden ladle [Music] and now the butter is washed with clear cold water working it with the ladle so no tiny bit of milk is left to make the butter spoil and then that clear cold water is poured off [Music] is that milk left in the jar [Music] yes that is called buttermilk some people like to drink it so dick tries it that's good for you and now what next a good pinch of salt for each bowl of butter yes a pinch of salt for each bowl of butter except one why no salt in that one well aunt ruth is going to tell them [Music] there are some people with certain sicknesses who cannot eat salt so a little butter is sent to market with no salt and is called sweet butter and then dickie begins to understand [Music] be what is this what is this that aunt ruth has in her hand [Music] well children this is a mold [Music] now aunt ruth takes all of the butter [Music] the butter is pressed into it [Music] and it comes out set in a square ready for market at last butter as we see it in a store well [Music] what next well we'll see children well here we are again [Music] look at that nice gold butter on that bread whoops we eat it of course hmm look at them drink all that milk [Music] look at that mustache the real butter you better [Music] that was so great uh big fan of that film and i don't know if that was an accordion or a squeeze box melodica i'm not sure what that was but it kind of added to the whole thing um in the pacing kind of definitely definitely different vibe than what can we do about it um that's for sure all right um let's learn about the busy harbor [Music] ted and maria are visiting their good friend captain mccain he lives in a city along the ocean a city built around a harbor we could see how big the harbor is if we were in an airplane a harbor is a sheltered place with calm water where boats are safe from bad weather most harbors have long piers built out into the water at these piers boats are kept or docked when they come into the harbor to be loaded or unloaded captain mckay and his friends decide to look at the fishing boats that are docked at this pier fishermen are busy unloading fish from their boats these are halibut which fishermen have caught far out beyond the harbor in the open sea others have caught cod fish some of these fish will be sold for food in stores near the harbor some will be sent to other cities leaving the pier where fishing boats are docked they walk toward another pier nearby this is a small sturdy tugboat captain mckay can tell ted and maria about tugboats because he is a tugboat captain himself he explains how tugboats are built to push or pull other boats through the water harbor this tugboat is pushing a barge barges are long flat boats that have to be pushed or pulled because they have no engines barges are used to carry heavy loads this kind of boat called a c train carries a very heavy load of railway freight cars sea trains barges and tugboats are some of the many kinds of boats that are busy doing work in the harbor captain mckay suggests that they look at more of the busy harbor at one pier a large ship a freighter is docked for several long poles called one boom is lifting freight or cargo from the ship the boom is lowering a crate to workers called longshoremen who are loading it into a railroad car on the pier from other freighters or cargo ships more cargo from other lands is being unloaded bags of cinnamon from far away indonesia heavy rolls of wire from germany these kinds of cargo and many more come by ship to the harbor from other lands here are bananas from ecuador in plastic bags they're being loaded on to carry them to american cities cargo on the pier is moved by trucks of many kinds and sizes this small truck is lifting bundles of burlap cloth but is being carried into a huge building called a warehouse built along the center of the pier inside this warehouse trucks stack the cargo in neat piles other trucks are taking products out of the warehouse to be loaded on ships these bags of flour are being sent from the united states to harbors in other lands other kinds of cargo too are being readied for loading these crates of apples soon will be shipped to other harbors across the sea the owner of the apples mr larson is on the pier this morning he's a good friend of captain mckays and he's happy to meet ted and maria he has something they might like ripe red apples mr larsen has business in the warehouse this morning but he's glad he could talk to captain mckay and his young friends apples are one kind of cargo that they'll surely remember lumber is still another kind of cargo sent to other lands a powerful machine called a crane is lifting lumber and piling it in large stacks aboard this ship most spheres have cranes to help to load and unload ships other kinds of cargo are loaded in different ways this big pipe pours a steady stream of wheat into a cargo ship grain from america is shipped to many countries of the world captain mckay explains that all day long and sometimes even at night cargo ships move in and out of the harbor bringing goods to america from other lands taking goods from america to other lands of course ships can't run at all without sailors sailors who work on ships which cross the ocean get to visit harbors in many countries sailors learn many things about other lands and the people who live in them ted thinks he might like to be a sailor someday let's look at a ship that has a big crew of sailors it's a large passenger ship it carries people across the wide ocean on the pier are men who have the job of making sure that everything is ready for the arrival of the ship and its passengers tugboats carefully guide the big ship to the pier long ropes are tossed from the ship to men who will tie the ship to the pier then the gangway a kind of movable stairway is lowered from the ship and passengers start to come ashore some of the passengers are returning from vacations overseas some have come from other lands across the ocean to do business no matter who they are all the ship's passengers are happy to see their friends and families on the pier ted and maria wish they grip night on his tugboat right now let's go one of the men in captain mckay's crew helps ted and maria abort before long they're moving through the deep water of the harbor up in the wheelhouse where captain mckay steers the tugboat ted and maria look out over the busy harbor behind the boat they can see a wake a trail of water churned up by the tugs propeller [Applause] from the wheelhouse they can see many boats moving about there's a coast guard boat coast guard boats patrol the harbor day and night making sure that ships and cargo are safe and there's a dredge dredges take mud from the harbor enough for big ships to come safely in farther out toward the open sea is a low stone wall called a breakwater it protects the harbor from high waves on a rocky point of the shore stands a lighthouse the bright light at the top of the lighthouse warns boats coming into the harbor of dangerous rocks below this kind of floating marker called a bell buoy also warns of rocks and shallow water ted and maria have learned many things today and they're having fun on their tugboat ride through the harbor you'll have fun too as you learn more about these busy places called harbors such jaunty music at the end um really great that's one of the things i miss about uh because the pandemic is uh traveling and seeing harbors like we're raleigh north carolina has no bodies of water that require harbors but i used to visit like baltimore in philadelphia and new york city and all these places that had awesome harbors um and just seeing all the the equipment and machinery the cranes the uh shipping containers all that stuff is really just fascinating to me it's all logistics stuff so um thanks for joining us today if you like what you saw you can certainly buy us coffee
