in any one of the other animals to a race [Music] [Music] do [Music] uh [Music] so [Music] um [Music] none of the animals wanted to erase that hair no challengers [Music] until [Music] hey [Music] the tortoise would raise the hair no contest you say hmm the day of the race was set the course was laid out everything was ready [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] so the hair was fast and far ahead why time enough for a snack maybe even a little nap that log would stop the tortoise [Music] so [Music] [Music] what do you know slow and sure step by step [Music] sweet dreams hair sweet dreams [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well the tortoise is a winner slow and steady won the race and the hair with all that speed and bragging where did [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Music] yeah so i want to stop here um and just let you look at what is well back it up a little bit um this is not how you do title uh graphics i mean look at that font book buck binder i mean it looks nice but if you're actually trying to figure out who paul book binder is as the credits go past and you don't have the benefit of pausing um yeah this is uh this is a cautionary tale anyways um [Music] korea 1952 american infantry is attacking an enemy hell position suddenly their advance is halted they're stopped by one of the most deadly obstacles soldiers can meet enemy mortar fire communist mortar teams firing from concealed emplacements and capable of moving quickly to new positions played havoc with nearly all front-line ground operations our problem was not a lack of firepower to destroy these mortars it was our inability to locate them we couldn't hit this enemy because we couldn't find him the result more than one third of our ground casualties in korea were from enemy mortar fire to help solve the problem of enemy mortars the u.s army signal corps and general electric company have developed the mpq4 this is a mobile radar system that quickly locates the source of enemy mortar fire in surveying the battle area the mpq4 transmits two fan-shaped radar beams one above the other they scan a 25 degree sector when a mortar shell passes through the two beams the radar signals echo back to the mpq4 and are presented as two blips on the radar screen a timer records the interval between the appearance of the blips their sequence and positions are marked on the radar screen the operator feeds this target information into a computer by positioning strobe lines over the target blips the location of the enemy mortar is then read directly from the computer in standard army map coordinates these are relayed to the artillery commanders to enable them to direct the fire that will silence the enemy mortars we have weapons with enough fire power to clear the way for the advance electronic systems supply accurate target data to permit the effective employment of this firepower [Music] so there's this little button a little tiny button that has a little speaker on it and sometimes i hit it and things are great and you can hear what i'm saying and sometimes i miss it and i start talking and i don't look at that button again until i read the comments so sorry i'm skip alzheimer i collect old 16 millimeter films sometimes i miss clicking that little tiny button uh this is av geeks we watch old 16 millimeter films uh that first film was uh here in the tortoise uh wonderful esop fable uh that has been told countless times uh animated beautifully uh poorly credited uh that font was a nightmare uh then we just watched a film on mortar location thanks to the fine folks at ge [Music] um are we up to speed uh coffee you can buy me coffee that's that's a way that you can help me find that little button uh thanks for bearing with my technical difficulties um maybe we should slow things down a bit and learn about american square dance [Music] the sort of dancing which most of us are familiar with is called round or social dancing actually square dancing is a much more social affair as we'll see when the caller gets this group organized all join hands and circle to the left [Music] all of the center and back you go [Music] all of the center and back once more gentlemen dance with the lady on your left you circle for your circle for a circulate circulate [Music] all of the center and hands up high and swing your partner's all aluminum left with the old little tiny element lift and a little lift friend a rounded circle hand over hand you pledge your tater to sandy land to meet your honey and promenade promenade until you come straight [Music] first now let's watch a student group work out some of the patterns of the square dance with the traditional set of four couples each couple stands on one side of an imaginary ten foot square the couple facing the orchestra is known as the head or first couple to their right is the second couple the third couple stands opposite the first and here is the home station of the fourth couple a gentleman always has his partner on his right the call is honor your partner now let's honor your corner then swing your partner for the swing partners face each other each takes a short step sideways with the left foot the gentleman's right hand supports the lady in the small of her back her right hand lies palm down in his leg and her left hand rests on the upper part of his right arm their hips are almost touching right feet side by side as they swing around taking short quick steps this walk step for beginners is simple and effective some dancers do a buzz step by pushing downward and backward with the toe of the left foot while pivoting on the right the alamann left is a movement repeated many times during an evening of square dancing on the call alamann left gentlemen and corner lady face each other and join left hands like this then they walk once around each other counterclockwise to their original home positions here's the element left again with the whole square at the end of this movement partners are facing each other so now since left hands are joined it's natural to extend right hand to partner and join hands at the call grand right and left partners pass right shoulder to right shoulder as they start around the circle the gentleman takes the left hand of the next lady in his left hand and they pass to the left of each other and so on until he meets his partner halfway around with his right hand in her right she reverses direction and like a pair of skaters they join left hands underneath right the promenade is simply a graceful walk or two step to music back at home stations partners face each other ladies curtsy gentlemen bob now with music let's put these fundamentals together in a simple square dance figure honor your partner honor your corner [Music] now swing your partners off hello a grand ripe and left you meet your partner halfway around and promenade her home now without music let's see how couples go visiting on the call first and third couples promenade the outside ring these couples walk around outside the set while the other couples having taken two short steps to the center remain until both visiting couples have passed then return to station and turn to receive their visitors now it's right and left through with the couples you meet the two couples exchange places turn and return to position on the call right and left back the next call may be two ladies chain followed by a chain right back in the right and left through each gentleman passes this lady through the opposite couple then partners join hands in this manner as he turns her in place the ladies pass each other by left shoulders and then move forward on the pivot as the gentleman turned backward for the two ladies chain the ladies pass in the center and join left hands with the opposite gents who turn them in places before the call chain right back is executed in the same way and returns the couples to a starting position let's watch the two ladies from above notice that they join right hands for a moment as they pass in the center and after passing they join left hands then right hands with the gentleman for the turn the next call might be four hands up and around we go halfway around and a dozie doe all drop hangs gentleman passes his partner through the opposite couple while he moves past the opposite lady right shoulder to right shoulder partners join left hands moving counterclockwise the lady encircles the gentleman halfway around the gentlemen pass right shoulders to each other each takes the opposite lady with the right hand and drops his partner's left hand now the lady encircles the opposite gentleman a full turn around still counterclockwise she drops his hand and takes her partner's left hand finally the gentleman turned their partners in place now keep your eye on one of the dancers as they go through another dosy doe four hands up and around we go halfway around in a dozie though hurry up gents and don't be slow one more change and home you go now slowly again each gentleman passes his partner through the opposite couple partners join left hands and the lady moves halfway around her partner gentlemen pass right shoulder to right shoulder each taking the opposite lady's right hand and dropping his partner's left hand now each lady turns completely around the opposite gentleman drops his hand and takes her partner's left hand to complete the dosie though gentlemen turn their partners in place now let's put these steps together to music first and third couple of rounds and swing and promenade the outside ring the outside ring the upside ring right left through with a couple of meat right left back to lay these chains chain right back chain right back four hands up and around we go and a halfway around and don't see though hurry up jensen don't be slow one more change in homes [Music] now let's put some of these square dance fundamentals together with a pattern of a traditional square dance such as take a little peek [Music] a picture snuff and promise you prominently the first little couple bouncing swing in the first couple swing and you lead right off to the right of the ring around that cup and take a little peek back to the center you [Music] which are made up of simple fundamentals such as those we have seen demonstrated with a little practice anybody can join in the swing and follow the call which continues long after we leave this session of the american square dance in the comments people were saying like wow why did they trap kids doing that um and i remember uh during pe there was a period of time and it was kind of right around the bicentennial around 76 that there was this let's look back at our roots and you know the teachers were like yeah well this is kind of activity uh that people can do kids can do and we're learning something on top of it and it teaches coordination and all that and it was incredibly awkward that's what i remember alright so um i am threading up a film here uh on my telecini so basically it is going let's see if i can focus in on this a little bit without unplugging anything uh okay so i've shown this before so here's the source up here thumb goes around this reel around this reel pops around this uh this is where the sound head is uh and traditionally on a projector the sound head is actually after the the gate the visual gate uh this uh being a telecini actually has electronics that delay the audio so that it sinks um and if i'm ever running something that is not 24 frames a second then i have to uh adjust it uh with the controls so uh so here is the um led housing and this is the camera right here and it's aimed at a mirror and so then the mirror is aimed directly at the frame so that you have a picture of the frame directly then you have a little sprocketed wheel here and this is what um it doesn't move the film through the gate but it registers when there's a frame and so every once in a while you'll see um the frame roll and that's because this the perf hole was shrunk or there's something else going on and then i sync it up and then uh let's go flip over to the right thing and i change the title to change the title to skin it's all around us and [Applause] i hit play use this leaders tell us the picture and adjust the frame line tell us balance the color a little bit um this is me not being ready and so this is i turn this into a teaching moment i think um wow this is very red all right let's try that again trying to move uh blacks um and i can adjust the gamma a little bit which i'll probably have to do but here we go and then here's the thing that says this copyrighted material you're not allowed to show it um so there you go here is skin it's all around us [Music] [Music] when we look at animals what is it we see that's right they're outer covering their skin but the most unique covering of all is the human skin [Music] so let's take a look at your skin one of the largest organs of the body because it's all around you [Music] the skin is one of the most important organs of the body it must do four major jobs first it helps to hold us together [Music] it keeps us in one package it protects the inside of our body from dirt and germs that may cause disease it protects against injury from scrapes cuts and tears it protects against the harmful rays of the sun third it helps control the temperature of the body [Music] and fourth our skin helps us keep in contact with our surroundings through the sense of touch [Music] if we look beneath the surface of the skin we can see how it manages to do all the jobs that it does the skin is made up of many layers there are two principal layers the thin outer layer called the epidermis is made up of cells beneath this outer layer is a thicker layer this is the true skin or dermis the dermis and epidermis are held together by connecting ridges if we look at the tips of our fingers we can see a network of these ridges a fingerprint is a print of the ridges in our fingertips no two people have the same fingerprints that's why this is a good means of identification on various parts of the body the skin varies in thickness on the eyelids for instance where it must be very flexible it is thin and delicate measuring only one fiftieth of an inch thick on the soles of the feet however a part of the body that gets heavy wear it may be up to 1 6 of an inch thick [Music] in our skin the living cells at the bottom of the epidermis gradually work their way to the surface growing larger and dying as they do so that the surface of the skin is actually a tough layer of dead cells [Music] as these dead cells wear or fall away they're replaced by new ones [Music] this complete process usually takes about a month [Music] inside the epidermal cells is a substance called melanin melanin is the pigment in the skin it absorbs the damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun in some people melanin is more active than in others therefore those with darker skin get more protection from the sun [Music] but even a thick layer of melanin can not protect against too much sun repeated and long exposure to sunlight will eventually cause undesirable skin changes such as premature aging and skin cancer [Music] the skin is kept alive and nourished by an extremely fine network of blood vessels in the dermis these blood vessels also help to keep our body temperature normal because heat is brought to the skin by the blood in the blood vessels when the weather is warm the blood vessels get larger increasing the flow of blood [Music] this allows body heat to escape keeping the body cooler [Music] in cold weather the blood vessels get smaller slowing the flow of blood this means more heat stays inside the body to help us keep warmer [Music] another amazing thing about the skin is its ability to heal itself when injured [Music] first blood runs out washing away dirt and germs from the cut area next the blood vessels get smaller stopping the flow of blood the blood then hardens and forms a protective crust called a scab as the clot of blood shrinks it pulls the two sides of the cut closer together when the skin has healed the scab falls off the skin also helps us keep in touch with the outside world through billions of nerve endings that are very close to the surface these nerves tell us when we are rubbing against something [Music] when something is too tight and when the skin is hurt [Music] the nerves in the skin also tell us when something is rough or painful [Music] or smooth [Music] without nerves in the skin we couldn't feel the wind or heat or cold so the nerves are an important part of the skin we make use of them every day [Music] hair or fur is also part of the skin on animals its main purpose is to keep them warm we also have hair on our bodies which serve useful purposes our eyebrows help to keep sweat from running down into our eyes when we perspire our eyelashes serve as little screens to help keep out dirt although we have different types of hair on our bodies all hair grows in exactly the same way [Music] each hair grows out of a tube in the dermis called a follicle and is nourished by very fine blood vessels a small gland the sebaceous gland pours an oily secretion called sebum onto each hair as it grows sebum also forms on the skin around the hair this helps keep the skin soft and smooth the dermis also contains sweat glands which release moisture to the surface of the skin through openings we call pores we have the most sweat glands in our cheeks and forehead the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet [Music] the purpose of sweat is to carry waste out of the body as well as to help keep the body cool it keeps the body cool by putting a layer of water over the skin as the water evaporates it cools the blood in the skin [Music] that's why the harder we work the more we sweat [Music] [Music] since our skin does such important work it's a good idea to take care of it cleansing removes sweat sebum dead cells dirt and bacteria from the skin water and mild soap is all that's needed for clean skin shampooing keeps the hair and scalp clean by loosening and removing dust grime and dead cells here can be shampooed as often as necessary [Music] after washing thorough drying is important feet in particular should be dried thoroughly in order to avoid athlete's foot [Music] the skin has an amazing ability to adapt itself to the needs of daily living it's elastic and seamless flexible and durable so as to accommodate our every movement for instance on the outer surface of the bending joints where it's exposed it's usually tougher and thicker because there is more friction at these places than elsewhere [Music] when our work or play requires a lot of rubbing or pressure on the hands our skin forms thick spots called calluses calluses protect the inside parts of the skin from being damaged by rubbing [Music] have you ever wondered why your hands wrinkle from soaking in water wrinkles form because the water washes away much of the oil on her skin the outer layers of skin then soak up water out of the water more oil then comes to the outer layers and the wrinkles smooth out during the teenage years the oil glands enlarge and produce an excess of oil which may cause a common skin condition known as acne acne pimples are caused by oil glands becoming clogged and inflamed washing your face helps to remove oil dead skin and surface bacteria this may be of some help in treating mild cases of acne however for severe cases of acne see a dermatologist the hoofs of some animals the horns on others and the claws on others are similar to our finger and toenails which are really a part of the skin it's just as important to keep the finger and toenails clean as other parts of the skin in order to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria [Music] so in order to keep our skin healthy we need to know how to take care of it too much sun exposure will lead to early wrinkling although our skin cannot be completely protected from the sun using a sun screening preparation will help minimize overexposure [Music] because our skin is the part of the body that everyone sees keep it healthy which includes getting plenty of sleep exercise and a balanced diet [Music] so be good to your skin it's all around you it has to last a long time and it's always working for you you could say it's your best friend well one of your best friends [Music] um so while not perfect rewind it we were able to get that uh the reds down pretty significantly so this is what it was before um the reds to be in the the color fade so that's that's what it was before um so sometimes you know this uh this telecenter is pretty good it's basically allowing me to adjust the leds and the camera color levels so there you go um yeah all right so that was uh skin it's all around us but the question i have is uh why vandalism why vandalism [Music] oh [Music] so this is vandalism in this case perhaps not too serious but wherever it happens vandalism may be the symptom of a sickness an outward expression of feelings which have become twisted and warped in an unfriendly world [Music] these feelings may not show on the surface [Music] take jeff turner he doesn't seem much different from others in his block and yet it may well be that never in his life has he had the love and the care that most people would give to a pet [Music] uh so jeff has come to feel that the world is against him a typical vandal no for people are never typical every person is different with inner motivations of his own often not even known to himself [Music] in jeff's hidden personality or many scars and many open wounds their causes are not easy to understand [Music] perhaps his home is at fault [Music] it's not that the dishes are dirty and the house is messy it's something much deeper perhaps the emptiness of a home that is lacking in love and affection [Music] whatever it may be jeff turner has become an outsider made so by complex circumstances which he himself can't fully control or understand [Music] even among others of his own age jeff often feels left out and uncomfortable three ounces right all right somebody put him away i'll i'll do it oh all right jeff now that's a gain of three ounces of the day before yesterday can anyone suggest the cause wendy it could be to the fad in the diet mr cole yes yes it could be we have to consider that but uh what other causes might there be jeff what do you have an idea uh i don't know well who can uh think about their causes yes well maybe rightly or wrongly jeff has come to feel that everyone is against him outside jeff turner is much like any boy on the block [Music] but inside he is eaten away with resentment and a desperate urge to get even [Music] there are others at odds with the world but for different reasons here is don cardiff putting up your coat [Music] his folks have prodded and nagged at don until without knowing it he hates them and himself as well you forgot your stars your stars [Music] and ed berger is a product of poverty made worse by the lack of family love and respect why not just get out there i'd have more money these are city boys but theirs is not only a city problem nor are all who get involved in vandalism necessarily deeply disturbed but wherever the natural warmth of human feeling has been turned to resentment by constant lack of affection and understanding there is danger of vandalism [Music] [Applause] [Music] these boys are bored aimless come on come on what are you stalling for what's the hurry we ain't going anywhere let's feed the jukebox a while what for for these other jerks to listen to what's the matter done you got too much money i got two dollars two dollars maybe we can do something let's go to a movie or something what's playing i don't know not what the difference is in me let's do a movie hey maybe i can get my old man's car we can go for a ride can't get nobody to go with us what's so fun sure we can sure we can get somebody like who i don't know somebody these are the seeds of vandalism boredom and inner resentment which lead to the destruction of property this is more than a simple matter of keeping the hands busy many people are nervous and fidgety but they seem to be able to control their actions so that they're not destructive in these boys feelings of resentment are too great to be controlled completely even when they themselves are not fully aware of their feelings although they have no plans at the moment these boys are headed for serious trouble before the evening is over can this trouble be avoided how can vandalism be reduced [Music] [Applause] can these boys be persuaded to take part in some community activity in order to help them get rid of boredom [Music] active boys clubs with strong leadership and community support might win their interest and keep them off the street the community has a responsibility here but so have the boys themselves they have to be able to meet the club halfway a club doesn't mean much if you won't join [Applause] our schools too in their after-hours activities as well as in the classrooms can do much in the fight against vandalism the sympathetic interest of good teachers and counselors can do wonders in making the world seem less cold and hostile [Music] what about the church [Music] a better understanding of right and wrong might steer these boys away from the direction they are heading but the key to the problem is in the family it is here that moral values are first implanted to be nurtured until they put down roots family friends community institutions all play their role in the complex process through which every personality develops into its own individual form [Music] these boys through many unhappy and painful experiences have come to feel resentful toward everyone say there's a free movie at the community center tonight those free movies yeah and anyway it's always too crowded in there their feeling isn't on the surface and therefore it's hard to overcome even when the community makes the effort well to see the film tonight fellas no we're kind of busy tonight how about a little basketball no we've got plans well come in anytime yeah sure mr brewer yeah social worker boy look at that looks more like a prison than a school yeah sure it does hey look look at that window say it's open how about that let's take a look around it might be fun huh better not be too bad if they catch us somebody are you scared no i'm not scared me neither oh come on i can't hurt anything let's go [Music] a guard walking by now might save these boys from doing things they'll be sorry for later but guards can't solve the real problem how to keep inner feelings from building up until they burst out in unexpected acts of destruction [Music] even so smaller thing is an unlocked window may trigger an act of vandalism [Music] man [Music] [Music] [Music] hey here's old man cole's one so what there's a rabbit in there a white rabbit come on my heck it's locked hey wait a minute my house key fits almost all the doors in school let me try there there any of you feel feel how soft he is oh i had one of those they're kind of dumb he likes me see see how he puts his nose up against me he probably thinks you're a carrot or something yeah you sure hey look test papers your paper in here jeff wait yeah i probably flunked say how about that graded in everything yeah well we can fix that here goes our whole test and cut it out why we're just helping jeff pass the test hey hey let me help look you stay there boy we're a cold and sore when he sees this [Applause] this is how vandalism usually starts not planned nothing to be gained or achieved destruction has boiled up out of hidden resentments and strikes out blindly against everything in its path [Music] hey jeff look jesus my rabbit my rabbit's gone we better get out of here but my rabbit my rabbit look out jeff look out for that fire what's going on here it's dead it's dead [Music] before the law you and you alone are responsible for the shocking appalling waste you've caused [Music] but we know today there's more to it than that you parents must share the responsibility for somewhere along the line you have failed your sons you have failed to teach them moral values and by denying them the love and security and the sense of belonging which is important to every living being you have hurt them as surely as though you had denied them food i know that there are other factors too the school the church and the community all share in this important problem but the basic fact remains that you three boys are yourselves responsible for your acts perhaps our doctors our social workers and others on our staff can help you overcome the fear and hate which has brought you before this court help you learn how to live a happy and normal life nevertheless i have no choice but to sentence you so when's another act of vandalism an act of needless waste and destruction to all concern [Music] tragic it's such a great film i'm surprised i hadn't shown it earlier um because i thought i'd burn through all my vandalism films uh and that one is so good um you know boredom man boredom is responsible for so much so much mayhem more than anything else i think just bored kids are bored and i just want to smash things because i am bored i certainly have done that as a child not in the school of course but you know there's some broken bottles to bear my name um thanks everybody for tuning
