hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show um right off the bat let me thank kevin for buying us some coffee uh it's always a good day when we start off with some coffee and so thank you for supporting us uh and all of you that have bought us coffee in the past it's very much appreciated that is the currency that um av geeks often trade in which is coffee and also money but you know um so what we just watched uh the title on the can was catapults real two somewhere i have real one and what's interesting about that is that's like actual raw home movie footage um that was shot and they paid somebody bought titles intertitles um you could send away uh a lot of camera magazines in the back it would say you know intertidals for your films and so that's what they did and um so this footage was shot by so basically i got this in a big batch of uh castle films castle films were the films that were made and distributed to home markets but in the midst of all these uh metal cases was the the two catapult films and i was told by the person who donated the films to me that uh their grandfather or father maybe grandfather um basically shot the footage of the catapults and this is early drone footage basically this is them testing the idea of having uh remote controlled air things for doing reconnaissance uh and more um so that's what that's from um in texas el paso ish area so fascinating stuff um always love the the old technology and to see where that technology ended up um got a film cued up here on the telecity over here um this is part of the most important person series uh which was something that was shown uh i believe on captain kangaroo um in the 70s so here we go the most important person in the whole wide world is and you hardly even know you the most important person in the whole wide world is you come on we'll show you let's find out more about the things you feel and do cause you're the most important person in the world to you [Music] he's little and you're big but to me you're little and i'm big and to me you're little and i'm big yes sir you're absolutely right sir i see what you mean hold on just a minute how in the world can you be little and big at the same time you gotta be one or the other hmm well what am i big or little you could be big a little fumble it all depends on who or what you're comparing yourself to huh what's silly nonsense it's not nonsense watch i can be real tall compared to the way i usually am and i can stretch it real small compared to what you were on your tippy toes hey that's terrific huh bird why don't you try it sure hey look at me i'm big i'm big too i still think you're little compared to you giant sir but i feel real big to me get off my back you big oaf what's the matter with you why don't you watch where you're going sorry aunt sure is a little slowpoke isn't he compared to you maybe there goes that word compared again take a closer look at him he's pretty speedy hey he's fast compared to a snail whether they move fast or slow depends on how you look at them and who you compare them to right except for fumble he moves slow no matter how you look at it who's slow me i challenge you to a race a race i can run circles around you i can run circles around you too huh that'll be the day oh boy you really do move slow bumble what's wrong with moving slowly i like to go slow sometimes so do i and sometimes i like to move fast big small fast slow compared to whom compared to what i think i'm confused somebody help me i think i can you can make yourself real tall real tall you can make yourself real small real small you can stretch stretch stretch and reach up with all your might you can curl yourself up into a little ball real tight even though you move from place to place everybody always takes up space and your space is always changing cause you're never standing still and we can choose all that we move i understand that's cool [Applause] [Music] so the leader was very short on that which is why it just kind of stopped um yeah so a very odd little series featuring a little hairy guy some birds um some uh kids of uh different ethnic origins um and i have many of these in my collection of which some of my favorite ones are tasting party um where everybody is filthy eating uh food on a picnic table um yeah so i just keep running across these so i'll just keep finding them and showing them uh this next film is uh a coronet film as you know we've been uh scanning coronet films uh from a giant collection that we got in august and we're always finding new stuff so here we go the story of our money system and william thank you for the coffee [Music] how do we buy the things we want with money of course money is a convenient means of exchange we all use for obtaining the things we want it measures the worth of things we buy or sell and the work we do the services we perform as you know the coins and paper currency we use are of various denominations or values because of that we can easily make change the size the shape and the weight of money allow us to carry it and use it with ease but where did the idea of money come from how did people get things they wanted before there was money what is the story of our money system long ago before there was money a man could not buy the things he wanted then people simply exchanged or bartered their goods a man with a fishnet to trade might want the dates his neighbor had but if his neighbor did not want the fishnet he would not trade it for the dates he would trade his dates with someone who did have something he wanted and so barter did not always work well as time passed in greece and in many other ancient countries men found a better way of trading one man might exchange his goods for a sheep although he may not have wanted the sheep he knew he would eventually be able to trade it for something he did want since the sheep was a very desirable animal because the ox was used to do work it was the most valued animal and became the basis for determining the value of other things and so useful animals became a medium of exchange that is they became a kind of money but this kind of money was not convenient to use an animal could not be carried and the whole animal had to be traded in exchange for goods a medium of exchange would be more useful if it could be divided into parts eventually in ancient greece and easily the visible medium of exchange was developed the value of a knife for example could be measured by a certain number of bags of salt which was a substance highly valued by ancient people salt was a more convenient kind of money than an animal because a person could make small bundles of it that could be carried and with salt men could buy goods of large or small value but bags of salt were bulky and awkward to handle men found many disadvantages in using salt a material that seemed to be more practical was metal which was also useful and highly valued but more durable than salt so the ancient greeks eventually began to use small pieces of metal for money nuggets of a precious metals such as silver were convenient for use in trade metals could be divided into many small units and became widely used as money the worth of a vase for instance could be measured by a certain weight of metal the metal could be weighed on scales which the earlier babylonians egyptians and assyrians had developed but it was important for the metal used to be pure so merchants began to mark the pieces of metal to guarantee that they were pure years later the greeks learned in trading with their asian neighbors how to use metal in the form of coins as a very practical medium of exchange this greek coin was typical of metal coins of the period its standardized value was determined by its weight and was guaranteed by a stamped mark of authority the metal coin then became the most convenient medium of exchange that had been developed coins of various denominations were also made divided into different units according to weight a larger coin which weighed three times as much as a smaller coin would be worth three times as much the coins of different weights made up a money system that provided a convenient means of exchanging goods later on the roman empire modeled its money and money system after the system of the greeks the basis of the roman money system was the daenerys its value was determined by the weight of its metal the use of the daenerys spread with the roman empire throughout europe later in the eighth century in a province in england another kind of money system was established by king arthur a pound of solid silver became the basic money unit each pound of silver was divided into 240 equal parts each called a penny the penny was the primary medium of exchange used in england during the middle ages its use helped set a convenience standard for other kind money and helped to create a permanent money system for englishmen to use in their trading of services and goods english colonists in america at first bartered with the indians and with each other later tobacco and other goods were used as money but were not as convenient to use as coin money the colonists of massachusetts were the first to make coins and use them this coin known as the pine tree shilling was used throughout new england when metal became scarce massachusetts followed an earlier practice used in england and issued paper promises that came to be regarded as money they were issued in higher denominations than coins were eventually the other colonies issued different types of money either in coin or paper currency money from england portugal and spain was also used in the colonies but the kinds of money in circulation did not have the same value in all the colonies so trade was difficult until the colonies became the united states and adopted a unified money system in 1792 for the citizens of the new nation this system conveniently measured the worth of work done and goods bought the basic unit of value for this money system was called a dollar the value of this silver dollar was determined by an established weight of metals and guaranteed by an official mark of the new nation gold coins of larger denomination than one dollar were also issued coins which represented parts of a dollar were issued to the money system was based on the number 10 as is our number system and so our united states money system began today coins are made by the mints of the united states treasury by a stamped mark of authority our government guarantees that the coins are not counterfeit and great care is used in manufacturing the money for convenience money worth one dollar or more is issued as paper currency and so this money is made available for use in our country it is a part of our modern money system which has developed over the centuries it began in times when men only bartered it developed from early kinds of money such as useful animals that were not divisible into parts and from salt which could be divided but was awkward to handle then metals were used leading to the first coins and money systems and eventually to the coins and money system that were developed and adopted by our country and so today we have a useful money system using money with a guaranteed value we have paper money and coins of large and small value in sizes and weights that make them easy to use money is the most convenient means we have for measuring the value of the work we do and the things we buy [Music] um yeah so i just talked about uh coffee as a currency and then we just talked about the whole concept of currency and uh stewart thank you so much for uh the coffee um i will bank it away and use it for another day um yeah it's pretty great so i thank you so much for your support and also thank you for tuning in and your comments and all that stuff that's i guess a way with video podcasts you can share you can like you can hit notify you can do all these things that mean something to computers um so yesterday i was uh showing a film about uh how science reshapes the car and so there was all this footage of computers and giant clay models of cars and they talked about lasers and i was sitting there thinking i was like you know i'm not gonna mention who said it but uh there's been all this talk about lasers from space uh causing forest fires and that clicked in my head and i was like i feel like i got a film about that i think i got a film about space lasers causing forest fires and so i did a little bit of research in digging and i found this film which i haven't shown yet uh it's it's a cartoon it's made by ken anderson films and ken anderson made christian films uh including i've shown on here it's free which features this farmer talking to a bunch of kids about just using weird metaphors about jesus um and accepting jesus as your personal savior uh this one is more it's odd i got this on ebay because the description just was really strange um so uh here is literally the title of this is lasers lasers from space i mean maybe this is an impetus maybe somebody saw this when they were in sunday school or church school and got all these ideas so here it is few people had ever heard of lightville the quiet little village and sunlight valley until an important solar research center was built in the area scientists came from all over the world to do very special experiments [Music] this is the story of how a boy named sparky together with some of his friends became involved in an experiment called lasers from space [Music] do [Music] rattlesnakes their experiments are dangerous i think that solar research center should be closed down now well sparky do you have everything you need for your school's biology field trip i think so dad i made up a list of everything i thought i'd need dad what are all the people around here upset about apparently some of the town folks are upset about the experiments going on at the solar research center they think some of these experiments are just too dangerous of course there is always some danger in experimenting with something new but they're good people at the research center ron told me they'll be experimenting while we're on our field trip at the lodge we'll be able to watch the experiments some of the gang has been doing some neat experiments over at the school science lab ching really knows his stuff about science that's nice i know how to do it ching here let me show you we'll use the sun coming in the window but chub we should let the teacher help us with this experiment it could be dangerous is this the kind of experiment your dad does at the research center ching well sorta it's the same idea they're trying to find new ways of collecting solar energy look the paper's getting hot see chub be careful you'll start a fire my brother won't listen to anybody he's always got to do it his way chub it's burning oh oh job that's not the way to experiment with solar energy we must always take the proper safety precautions thanks mr bagley [Music] the installation of the last energy receptacle is proceeding on schedule good it looks like we can expand the experiments as scheduled here are the exact locations for the energy receptacles you can proceed with programming them into the computer my son booker is really excited and he'll be able to watch the experiments while on his class field trip so is rob it should be a spectacular display since they take place at night which also helps us strike the energy beams here is the up-to-date satellite data the primary satellite appears to be maintaining a very stable orbit now right class everybody on the bus chub's not here yet he'll miss the trip the only thing child makes sure not to miss is meal time hey here he comes and i think he's brought everything he owns including plenty of extra candy bars and snacks hmm we're only going overnight you brought enough for a month you never know we could get lost so i brought everything i needed including some candy bars and other stuff to eat [Music] kirk just what do you think you're doing why i order chub cool it man remember our sunday school lesson about how we should treat kids who aren't christians okay come on children the bus is ready to leave [Music] i sure hope i can find some more butterflies for my collection sparky hey chub only sissies collect butterflies forget it chub kirk just wants trouble the video is ready on each of the receptacle sides good let's take a look they all appear to be ready we are right on schedule for the big test i'm glad you decided to leave most your stuff in the van chub yeah it'll help you to run faster when you chase those butterflies hey you guys come on over here you can see the receptacle my dad will use for the experiments tonight wow what do we see they'll bring down solar energy from a satellite in a bright beam of light all right students let's start our nature hike let's see how trump handles this little critter [Music] [Music] all right let's put an end to the foolishness and start your assignment ah let's go chubby what are you gonna look for on this field trip pam i'm gonna try to find some wild mountain flowers come on guys mr bagley wants us to look around on our own and see what we can find to show the others in the class i see what i'm looking for well you won't catch me getting in chub's way when he's looking for butterflies i've seen him net a whole bush trying to catch one [Music] oops oh no way i'm going after him wow you think everybody believe in god when they see things like this hey i wonder where the rest of the guys are it's a good thing i brought my compass with me huh what hey guys come here look wow it's spinning like crazy look here guys look at the stuff stuck in this big rock it's like this rock is a big menu this piece is loose it's just sticking to the big rock let's take it with us come on class we shall now return to the lodge mr packard how's the grocery business hello sheriff what brings you over to my store i'm tired of hearing all this talk about the research center they're responsible folks out there they don't plan to cause any trouble [Music] well some people tend to panic when they don't know the facts hmm i wish folks were worried about their souls as much as their property you know mr packard you should have been a preacher no sheriff it's just that more people like you and me should talk about the things that are really important this world needs more people like you that's for sure now class this is what i found on our hike a real hornet's nest are there any hornets in it mr bagley i wouldn't be holding it if there were a chub can i hold it here take it a hornet [Music] come over to the window guys we'll be able to watch the experiments in just a few minutes [Music] hold it steady [Music] receptacles [Music] all data is normal good prepare full firing good receptacles that was really something we should see the full test in a few minutes [Music] [Music] six five four three two one buy a receptacle one [Music] [Music] fire number two house is next fire number three what was that ron it looked like the energy being missed its target oh you guys are getting scared of nothing something's wrong at receptacle number three what is the problem a minus reading on the receptacle it appears the beam missed this target okay recheck all the instruments and the data then give me a full report all right class the tests are over so it's time to get into your cuts girls will sleep in the next room while the boys sleep in here nothing checks out let's bring receptacle 3 up in the video so we can inspect it for damage [Music] [Music] i'm having no luck getting the video in on receptacle number three our instruments are malfunctioning [Music] what mr baggy chubb what are you doing on the floor i don't know [Music] what's going on here mr bagley look out the window the forest is on fire it looks like it started around the energy receptacles it's pretty fast what are we gonna do everything has broken down we must get out to receptacle 3 and investigate there's only bombs rode out and the flames i'm afraid we're trapped and there's no phone here at the lodge to call for help yes a fire where okay hello yes sheriff okay keep me informed [Music] god please protect us from this fire and bring someone to help us will god help us we are ready let's take her up pilot we'll die if we don't get out of here don't panic kirk all of us just need to trust in god what good will that do sparky remember what i told you kurt god loves you and he sent jesus to die for your sins ask god to forgive your sins like i told you the bad things we do and and let jesus be your savior then god will help you not to be afraid what if we die up here the bible tells us when christians die they just go to heaven to live forever but what about all those bad things i did the chubb the bible says we've all done bad things but god will forgive us and then we forgive each other this is as far as you can go with your fire equipment captain the road to the lodge is blocked we're in contact with the research center helicopter they think they might be able to reach the lodge by air please please folks let's not make any rash decisions until all the facts are in i told you that research project was too dangerous it's time now for some action it's our children i'm concerned about right now and we'll probably be waiting here the rest of the night for word of their safety sheriff to research helicopter sheriff to research helicopter what is your progress roger sheriff we are near the large area now but waiting for more daylight before moving in roger we should have daylight soon move in as quickly as possible the wind's blowing that fire right toward the lodge and fast [Music] it's getting light yes but i'm afraid the fire is getting closer will help come i'm sure god will protect us but for now we're going to have to leave the lodge sparky i want to ask god to forgive me what should i do we'll pray together and you can ask god to forgive you repeat after me okay sparky god i know i'm a sinner god i know i'm a sinner i believe jesus died on the cross for my sins i believe jesus died on the cross for my sins sheriff we're having trouble finding the lodge the smoke is too thick let's keep at it we must find the children i say it's time we vote to shut down the solar research project that won't accomplish anything we've waited here all night now let's give the sheriff more time to report back what is important is that we pray and trust in god that he will keep our children safe come on everybody let's move over to that large opening this should give us more time to wait for help to arrive has god heard our prayer sparky god always hears the prayers of those who put their faith and trust in him hear that noise it sounds like a helicopter [Music] i'm afraid the smoke is too sick they may not see us sheriff we think we have spotted the lodge and it is now in flames but there is no sign of the children what are we gonna do if they don't find us if we had a mirror i could signal the helicopter i learned morris code last summer but we must hurry the sun will soon disappear behind the smoke but we left everything back at the lodge you got any more candy bars chub yeah why it's got a metal foil wrapper we can flatten it out and use the great idea let us turn back and fly over the large area again here it is it's ready that ought to work round i hear the helicopter i think it's coming back wait a minute i think i see something s o s it is probably the children let us take it down [Music] research capital to shed it we have spotted the children and they appear to be all right roger will relay the good news to town hello yes great good news please let me have your attention i've just received word from the sheriff's department the children have been found and they are okay well that's good news [Music] let's stay back until the helicopter has [Music] landed take her up quick we're being blown into the trees oh no the venge is too strong it blew them to all the trees let us try approaching the opening from downwind this time here they come again we better move in quickly the fire is getting close [Music] you were right sparky about god taking care of us quick he did we must leave the fire is getting close no chub [Music] are you okay chuck yeah i think so there is no need to panic we'll be out of here soon enough everyone okay yeah okay i hardly saw your signal we used this flattened wrapper from one of chubb's candy bars it's a good thing the smoke was too thick to see you what went wrong with the experiment father i do not know son something went wrong with these sensitive instruments that guide our energy beans you mean like my compass when i got near that big rock what do you mean chubb it was a rock as big as a small mountain when we got near it chub's compass went crazy even pieces of metal stuck to it see here's a loose piece i found this metal pen sticks right to it a magnetic force that large could have caused our instruments to malfunction this is important information that should save the research project and it also gives us a clue to a potentially more serious problem sabotage someone with evil intent could do the same thing causing even more damage but something even more important has been saved and what is that sparky sparky helped me become a christian that is wonderful what happened to you kirk truly becoming a christian is more important than anything we do with the solar research project and then it just ends what an odd film um i have been actively trying to collect uh odd christian films um did a show called god awful which were christian films that uh some of them were tv shows some of them were um things that were shown in sunday school but all of them are baffling and also not very good and that they put a lot of work into that and the story is just so odd so i'm happy i got to show it um the context of it space lasers causing forest fires is what made me think about it and i again i don't like to dabble in current events but that headline was just too weird so there you go um thanks everybody for tuning in today uh tomorrow i'm actually doing two shows i'm doing one show uh at one o'clock and then i'm doing another one at three o'clock with hunt library and i'm going to be showing films about finding a job which we have shown several on here but these are new ones um and they're made by the afl-cio so they talk about they're basically union jobs and uh kind of fascinating uh nonetheless um thanks for the coffee today again you can buy any geeks coffee is one way to say thank you for tickling my eyeballs uh another way is just to hit like subscribe uh et cetera you can go to avgeeks.com and you can see past shows you can see other things that we've digitized and made available uh as i said we've been digitizing a bunch of cornet stuff and so that stuff's been popping up um on our site um and uh we'll see you tomorrow one o'clock everybody have a good rest of your thursday and as always you know we look to the film can to tell us to give us guidance and it tells us to please rewind and love each other um other film cans tell us other things like uh about uh copyright violations and charge and us having to pay five thousand dollar fine but this is a more positive message and that's what i wanted to put out there so i will see you tomorrow one o'clock take care everybody [Music] you
