foreign hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16mm later films and that was some potentially uh hold on mute that um that was I think might have been tourist footage or it might have been something that somebody shot to be used in some production but it was basically hula footage what I've noticed when I've transferred a lot of home movies of people that have gone to Hawaii in the 60s and 70s is that there was a kind of a hula luau presentation sponsored by Kodak and so you would see this Grand presentation of who lit answers and Native men dancing and performing and then there was this big Kodak logo that would be in the background that you would see this would be outside next to the palm trees so it'd be like here's a a wonderful opportunity for you to shoot home movies of this event um and so scores probably hundreds if not thousands of people shot that footage and so it's exactly the same you know they're it'd be interesting if there was someone who was a scholar on hula dancing it would could look at go through hours of this content and figure out like oh that was such and such to answer and this this person blah blah you know whatever but uh here's something that there's not hundreds if not thousands of copies of this is a snippet uh that we call Cabaret Act enjoy [Music] all right [Music] thank you foreign thank you foreign [Music] [Laughter] [Applause] unfortunately it's it's clipped so we have no context like I don't know where that came from chances are that was from a feature potentially and somebody on eBay clipped it out and sold it because they knew that the feature itself wouldn't sell a lot but here's a highlight that is super exciting this happens a lot especially for collectors who collect train footage or whatever is that a eBay seller would clip out specifically the scene that they thought would make the most money and then they would sell the rest separately and so you lose that context which makes me sad because I'd love to know more about it who that those folks were and like what are other routines that they've done stuff like that so kind of frustrating all right so we got behind me a film scanner and what we do is we try to watch and digitize a couple of films a day when we do the show sometimes we we don't have time to do it but that's okay so today we're gonna watch Step a little higher and this film was obviously shown by someone who didn't know how to run a projector so it's very spicy and Scratchy at the beginning but eventually it gets better so here it is Step a little higher enjoy Mr Wilson is my friend what does the name come on it one day [Music] and I don't know that's the library [Music] he's laughing at me because I'm in the second grade and can't read every word I'll never ask him anything ever she's not my friend [Music] each night they find a new world right up until closing time you're a guard at this Library Jim Wilson and you're ashamed to look at them because you can't read [Music] you hurt that little girl pretending you were too busy she knew what do you tell your own kids so you won't have to say I can't read you walk by thousands of books staring at you each day all you can read is a few numbers and dates you check out books but you can't even read a children's book [Music] and try to figure out that word foreign you're a grown man with years of experience you can read some words and letters don't make sense [Music] you can't make it up you've got to learn to read don't lose this job too Tom Dawes you've got to make it you've got to be able to fill out that application form act confident you know you can do the job tell them about your experience [Music] and don't panic figure it out tell them you forgot your glasses you'll never believe me one word got to mean something try to remember piece it together [Music] you can't read well enough to get a decent job you're not fooling anybody just yourself [Music] you failed again it's not your fault your father pulled you out of school is it your fault your mother died but you can't lose job after job you've got to learn to read better remember they told you at church about a reading Center that's free at the library the library can help you read better make out the hard words it's a hard decision for an adult to make learn to read again go in Tom [Music] open the door to your new life Jim Wilson finally made up his mind after 30 years of struggling to read Billboards of putting off real learning because you were too busy just living you're crossing the bridge to a new world of learning you're going to be able to read a whole newspaper know what's going on when the ball game comes to town know what your kids know make them proud of you be proud of yourself work out your own particular reading problem stop being ashamed Jim Wilson and Tom Dawes you're going to step a little higher [Applause] [Music] it's hard for adults with a lifetime of some reading experience to learn to read better it takes a tremendous curiosity a love of Life a willingness to improve [Music] how about this word all right and we said that the GH was silent try this again Mr daughter give it a good shot you wanted to know so bad but the words were strange they all seem to know more than you the whole group is watching you she understood you can't learn with other people around that's got to be sure of yourself before you can learn something new oh Mrs Brown works all day she works for her friends for her friends now she wouldn't work for her friend I worked for you and the children family all right they look pretty sure of themselves but each one had to cope with their own reading problem s they spent months learning to put sounds together I can't make anything out of me I'm afraid to try something new Jim afraid you'll never learn to read like that it takes time time to piece letters together to try to make sense out of words Oklahoma is Oklahoma City fine what we're going to try to do here is look at it learning becomes more difficult for adults with a rich background of Years of Living of seeing words and images each adult came with his own particular problem Jim Wilson had seen these words somewhere see if you can make that out what do you think Jim was always afraid of being wrong give it a shot give it a try with each word an image came to his mind the image was so strong that it stopped him from figuring out the sounds he was unsure afraid to say out loud the image he saw in his head he's like you have a pretty good guess take a guess what do you see in your mind what is the word kind of remind you of a horse and still afraid he encouraged you he wouldn't let you quit not quite try it again as as all right how would you use that have you ever used the word before as as hmm okay what do you want to think of it you can yeah okay as um Barry did it would you recognize it that way because uh as I was going finally you began to make sense out of Psalms reading in a group became fun for Tom Dawes [Music] yourself you have to die get someone else a chance you can't do all the reading you want to try it now yeah that's right that was a good song said Mr Brown rapper reveling Yankton alive preaching always preach good sermons he is a good man yes he yes he is said Mrs Brown and we need to hear him say love your neighbor ask yourself it is the thing we need to think about you finished your first book [Laughter] let's try a little reading Jim Wilson Wilson books taught you more about life about your country about being a better citizen there is a star for every state good citizens once want to know about the flag we want to know about our flag all right each book stimulated a discussion what if the man can't read and write how would he become to be a good citizen because I think like this if if I don't have anything to say about the way things are going and uh what what I like and when I don't like when I don't think I have a right to care about I mean if things don't go right I have nothing to say in the library reading Center Jim Wilson found whole shelves of books books especially written for adults beginning to read you never knew how much you could learn about being an American a boater a consumer learn about living how to live better how man used to live foreign he had to struggle too you shared your new interests your new confidence brought back old friends you told them about your full-time job and next week you start new classes with the board of education schools you're a changed man how has the reading program helped anyone each individual felt the change the inner security that being able to read can mean and they talked about it if I take a book from here then I I'll try to read that book because I have a length of time to bring it back and then when I'm reading here well words I don't know how to pronounce can you help me and I'll read more about coming here then I wish I just staying home because I keep putting enough when I was a kid I didn't have the chance and I appreciated a chance it gives me a better understanding the reading and learning to understand uh the rewards different words and are the same as a light it's shining on the savings of light that you travel by and you Tom Dawes wanted to learn more and more you never felt better in your whole life you tore down a wall and now you can really see Tom Dawes couldn't see behind this door but he could feel the results of months of planning plans to enlarge the scope of the reading program Plans by the director of the library's adult education department the Project Director the director of public libraries they work together to reach more than 50 000 adult men and women in the city who have never learned to read well plans in which librarian and teachers select books to motivate adults to want to learn to read plans to help Mary Elder read labels on medicine bottles instead of tying ribbons around them to tell the dosage the reading program opens even more doors Tom Dawes and Jim Wilson met for the first time during the library tour they both felt proud when they learned that this room holds the largest chess library in the world and the smallest book [Music] Jim remembered his short order cooking days you heard the Noonday concert [Music] the library opened a whole world of music [Music] he watched readers use the typing Center saw a film about people living on the opposite side of the world and went behind the scenes to see film inspection [Music] for their eyes you knew their curiosity for knowledge [Music] the pleasure of sharing interest remember your struggle to read this is much harder but you know what it means to struggle and to succeed what it means to be able to step up a little higher than myself can you help me and I'll read more about coming here but I went by just staying home give me a better understanding to read is the same as a life it's shining on Savings of light that you travel by [Music] foreign [Music] wow that was really great I uh very much enjoyed that and what I noticed at the end so the the feels I think that's how you pronounce the name f e i l they did a series of different films most of them dealing with nursing uh uh the film that they did that I think is is phenomenal uh is called a hidden world of aphasia where uh the wife plays a nurse who is very callous to people who are suffering they had a brain injury and they're suffering from Aphasia which is means that they have problems processing what they're seeing uh parts of their bodies aren't working correctly uh and with most people it clears up at some point but uh so this nurse was very very much has no patience for aphasia's patience and she falls down a flight of stairs and uh ends up with aphasia herself and then you hear her internal monologue so really fascinating stuff and I think all the feel stuff got donated to the Indiana University's uh film archive but that was great uh very stirring as I said all right uh so today's the last day of February last day of uh black history month and I'm gonna show a film it's not part of my collection but it is something that I've strived to find not unlike uh return of count spirochet this is another film about syphilis um why is it I'm collecting films about venereal disease because at some point I hope to do a movie or a book documentary about uh VD films because they're fascinating they really kind of tell a history of Public Health and the fact that we in the early 20th century were not interested in talking about people having premarital sex even though people were having a lot of pre-marital sex and venereal disease was basically the number of cases was extremely high so you knew that people were having premarital sets so anyways this film is interesting because it actually was made for uh blacks in Mississippi and was written by Joe George Stoney who has done a lot of really amazing films uh and was one of the fathers of Public Access TV uh George Stoney also did some things for Ford Motor Company he did this film called American Road um book for safe keeping is an amazing film about uh made for police officers uh dealing with the mentally ill um and so this is an amazing film now it is a film about venereal disease that came out in 1948 I don't think there's going to be some diseased Parts I don't think there's any sexual organs I hope there does not I'm gonna try to keep an eye out for him uh because I haven't seen this all the way through I've seen most of it um but everyone Smiles something sneaks in so I'll try to kind of keep an eye on that but the other irony to this is the fact that so this is Mississippi um I believe in Alabama Tuskegee uh there was an experiment going on a pretty horrible experiment at the Tuskegee Institute it was the Tuskegee study for untreated syphilis in the Negro male where it involved 400 men with syphilis and they didn't treat them they the these males came in saying like I have this problem and the doctors did not say oh you have syphilis this is how we treat it they were like oh you have this other disease and they didn't treat it just to see what would happen so that happened from 1932 um probably up to the 50s even though there was Penicillin that came out in 43 it wasn't applied so this is a horrible thing that the U.S Public Health Service did and Bill Clinton actually public apologized for in 1997 there was a class action lawsuit but um not all public health entities were interested were doing this and so this is is evidence that yes we are trying to educate this population about syphilis so here's feeling all right enjoy [Music] the principal parts in this story are acted by people from everyday life who have given their time and effort to help in the fight against syphilis Roy Jackson is played by Eldred Marshall his mother is played by Mrs Marshall his friend Jim and Ruby are played by George mix and Margaret Lindsay Jim's friend Linda is played by Thelma Barnes and Roy's too loves Irma is played by Blandy parks thank you [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] big trouble to look like so I thought go see Jim you've been around more than me you don't know what to do well Jim knew right off you got a haircut for sure Roy what you do fool around that gal sweet on you in the cafe I told Jim maybe I'd better see a doctor don't be crazy Roy I got just a thing for you up to the house fix you up in no time at all [Music] maybe Jim don't think I should worry but I was scared they saw a hat that Jim called a haircut didn't hurt any but it looked might have bad I couldn't stay still thinking about the day in town when I got into this mess [Music] ran into gym next Saturday I hadn't been to town for a couple of months too much work to do on Papa's Farm [Music] we took a walk down Water Street them know most everyone around here he had a wave and a good word for everybody [Music] don't take farming too serious but they sure got a lots of friends [Music] then it all started a couple of good-looking girls came into the cafe good friends of Jim judging by the way to say hello [Music] to take a like them to me right away foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] it wasn't long before we were laughing and kidding around like old friends [Music] tell the truth I don't remember much what we talked about but it seems mighty nice and cheerful at the time that afternoon passed in a hurry and me and Linda got pretty friendly too friendly it turned out to be later on [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] that's the way it was and just when I've been figuring on acid armor about all getting married [Music] here you are Roy the little Miracle Worker just what you need [Music] men are you in trouble stop worrying now knock the Waldorf little miracle cure will dry up your trouble soil disappear in 10 to 20 days your money back if you are not satisfied that sound like pretty big talk to me or don't be so stubborn Jim said me and Ruby both use it for our soil like yours I could knock a merch maybe this was the easy way out 20 days isn't so long if the Cure really works [Music] [Music] like old times dealing with Roy again got real mad at first him staying away so long but his mama says something's been bothering his mind not talking to anyone just going around the farm looking mighty blue whatever it was guess he's feeling all right again sugar I'm coming I'm coming [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign foreign [Music] foreign [Music] mighty good to Roy's crops he's made up with Irma going out regular whether now the Saw's all gone yes life's worth singing about today cotton coming along fine corn head high already a lot of work and sweat goes into those fields but when you see a [Music] is that the old trouble come back Roy your saw just breaking out somewhere else maybe Jim Sav was a fake Roy good friends sometimes give you foolish advice because they don't know any better see someone who knows for sure what he's talking about thank you [Music] foreign make me feel real ashamed going around trying to hide them and taking their tiny gym told me to get for about a week now still no sign of it clear enough what's the matter with your back Roy it's all broke out Roy you got it on your hands too are you sick Sons nothing mama just the sun might have had out in the field it doesn't bother me I feel fine if it was heat rash son it would be all itchy and firing seems to me like it's something else you better see a doctor oh I'm taking the time that Jim gave me he said to get rid of it in a hurry all that young man is silly ideas don't let Ruby even see a doctor and she is six months big or Mama credit hours you don't like them that's all I had a sore last month he gave me some sand that dried up fine you had a soul run and didn't tell me another popular about it we thought you were feeling alone and called you and Irma had a falling out leave him out of this mama let me be I'm no baby anymore I listened to your mama Roy I take care of all of you when you were sick not by just sending on a dollar for a bottle of tonic that claimed to kill a man or Muse you get some sense into your head and go and see Dr Jones Jim I'm not guessing about this kind of trouble mama it worked for him and it would work for me too [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this is a special day at Mount Holly the county health department has come down to spread the gospel of good health the windows are covered so pictures can be shown and Reverend Harris introduces Mrs Green to the congregation she's going to talk about a sickness everybody should know about syphilis some people call syphilis the part of a bad blood but whatever name you give it it's real bad you may be strong or puny Rich are poor but when that syphilis Durham gets into your blood you're going to have a lot of trouble is a very catching sickness you get it mostly by sexual intercourse by fooling around with someone who has syphilis already babies can catch syphilis too before they are born you see this prologue fellow his mother had selfless while she was still carrying him and when a baby catches sisters from his mother it will likely be born dead are worse than that all [ __ ] up like the baby in the picture some people get a warning sign when they catch syphilis mostly it is a sore on their private because that is where the germ gets into the body you've heard men call it a haircut a woman might not see her soul if it's inside of her that first time usually goes away after a while even without any treatment but syphilis doesn't give us this easy maybe two or three weeks later you get a second time maybe a sore in the corners of the mouth like this all patches of ham may fall out some get sores on their face people think they are ringworms I'll call them nickel and damn spots sometimes it is a breaking out a spot on their hands and feet lots of people get this kind of a warning and most all of these swords are as catching as can be that is how syphilis is spread from one person to another now many people don't know that these are wanting the syphilis a lot of people who catch syphilis don't get any of these signs at all so they go for a year not even knowing that they have syphilis they may feel all right but the germs are still eating away inside our body if they don't get the treatment then years later they may get swellings in the joints like this woman I go crazy or get hot trouble they get sores like this that never heal up just eat deeper and deeper you can keep this from happening to you go to your health department or your doctor and get a blood test if your blood test shows that you have syphilis there's only one way of getting cured cells and tonics won't help you go to your health department or your doctor for treatment right away it takes only a few days to kill the syphilis germs and make you healthy again [Applause] [Music] thank you foreign how do you do I'm worried about my son he has right on his hands and back just like the picture you showed today have you tried telling him to come to the health department I see his doctors you know a blood test is the only way of telling what his sickness really is that's the trouble Mr scream I keep back to him he won't listen to me he's taking a tonic that his friends say would kill him well you can be sure that those home remedies won't do him any good if It suffers he's got here I'll give you an apartment slip for him then he'll know what day and hour to come to the health department for a blood test if your son has syphilis Mrs Jackson and doesn't take the treatment he's going to have a lot of trouble thank you I'll try to get my boy to come in for a blood test thank you Alexa gave Roy plenty to think about that fellow has a breaking out like mine he went to the health department but Jim can't see it calls it a lot of fancy talk insisted he and Ruby took care of themselves when they had it but Roy just can't get the pictures of the lecture out of his mind maybe Jim and Ruby claim they feel all right but the help lady says you never know when that syphilis is going to come back and [ __ ] you up I had to talk to the health people Roya he was so bashful and talking yourself this is a slip they gave me to give you man you were in big trouble now they have your name and they're gonna take you off and feed you full of shots but make you sick as a dog you see here Jim you have caused enough trouble with your hoodoo cure did you hear the lecture if you were so smart take Ruby to the clinic and see if she and the baby is all right let Roy take care of his own business let's go home son I have a dinner to get on the table T that's a bad looking rest or it'll soon be gone Jim is picking up with some special tonics you guys if I were you I'd get me a blood test how you know it ain't the fox I feel all right why should I go messing around with doctors in treatment I don't blame you Roy they tell me they have knees out there that long stick you up your back like you was a pig oh you're crazy really there's nothing to it well I took the children when I was in the Army rather do that any day than to be crazy a blind or end up like old men at seven there's nothing to fool around with [Music] remember the lecture Roy [Music] to make up your own mind Roy who are you going to believe foreign [Music] the health department was new to Roy saw the doctor look right inside of a man with one of those x-ray machines saw the clinic that helps mothers keep their babies healthy there was malaria control Dental Care the VD Clinic looked like he should have come here long ago instead of fooling around with Jim's cures Roy was embarrassed at first seeing what his trouble was but he got over that the people acted like they were there to help him not blame him for the trouble he got into saw the man from the church lecture too he told Roy the doctor would give him an examination first and then he'd get his blood test that's what syphilis can do the doctor told Roy that man had syphilis for years didn't know it until he went blind we cure the syphilis the germs won't do any more damage but he'll never be able to see a game and that's why it pays to get a blood test regularly then you know for sure that you're all right the doctor didn't do any guessing checked Roy's throat look at the spots on his hands look at the rash on his back seemed like it was syphilis alright but the blood test would be the proof the doctor told Roy be sure to take the treatment if your blood test shows that you have syphilis you can go to your doctor or to the medical center run by the health department the treatment you get there is free time for the blood test like he told Jim later on when you never had one you get kind of scared no reason for it everybody says it doesn't hurt but you just can't help worrying wondering what it's going to be like well people weren't fooling just like they say there's nothing to it [Music] Roy's blood is put in the tube and set away for testing in a couple of days the report came back yes Roy's trouble is syphilis Roy decides to go to the medical center for treatment the center is run by the health department they pay your transportation there and back home again you get a place to sleep and all the food you can eat good food too and it doesn't cost you a penny [Music] one of the first things you do at the center is get another examination it always pays to double check when you're dealing with this syphilis listen to that poor baby cry makes Roy want to get home fast while there's time to talk some sense into Jim's stubborn head Ruby should have this treatment right away before her baby is born while the doctor listens to Roy's heart and lungs he sees a little sore on the side of Roy's nose the doctor takes a smear from it on a glass slide if there are syphilis germs in that smear then there's no question that Roy has syphilis you want to take a look at this see those Corkscrew things moving around you can only see those they're so small with a microscope that's the germ that causes syphilis they're in the rash on your hands and back and in that little soul on your nose they got in your blood through that soil you said you had on your privates you can see now why Sals and tonics could never do any good all they do is dry up your sores the treatment you get here will kill those germs in your blood you can put your shirt back on now it's a good thing you came in soon enough so those germs will have a chance to do any serious damage well it will take only a few days to clear this up before you know it you'll be well again then you won't be able to give syphilis to anybody else that's the big thing Roy when folks get syphilis and don't get treated they can pass their sickness onto the people they go with maybe someone they like very much like their wives or their sweetheart that's right doctor well you don't know what the syphilis is you can get other people into a mess of trouble well good luck Roy you'll be all right as long as you take the treatment until you're cured Roy's had several shots by now but it's the first day for the others and they feel like Roy did the first time foreign can't take their eyes off the needle [Music] this is old stuff for Roy a couple of seconds and you've had your shot it's hard to believe that something as simple as that kills those syphilis germs but it does no two ways about that [Music] that's a game [Music] what's all the giving about my Roy has his bag all packed all set to go home see the rash on his hands is gone the doctor says his troubles all cleared up won't be long until he sees his folks in Irma again man that is for a short time to live and is full of misery he cometh up and is cut down like a flower he flees as it were a shadow and never continuous in one's day in the midst of life we are in death for as much as it hath pleased almighty God in his wise Providence to take out of this world the soul of This Little Child we therefore commit his body to the ground Earth to Earth ashes to ashes to dust let us pray [Music] foreign [Music] to get our man for a blood test she said she felt fine but when I told her some of the things I've seen and why Ruby's baby died she stopped arguing her mama wanted her to go to the family doctor and I said it didn't make any difference just so she had to test I'm with natural about coming in for something like this but the doctor made us feel easy right away [Music] while I was waiting I got to thinking about who was baby dying too bad she and Jim had to learn about shifters the hard way they are taking the treatment now the birthday showed they both had syphilis [Music] to Jones said I did the right thing coming in with Irma every couple should have this blood test before they are married he told Irma don't you worry raw here has had the treatment and is healthy again when the reports come back on your test and it says you're all right why then you two go right ahead have as many children as you want [Music] thank you [Music] thank you so it's an amazing film uh and this is why I mean although this is not a film from my collection I have other films that deal with the venereal disease and Public Health uh from the same time period uh and these the issues that were being addressed in this as one uh syphilis can show up as a soar on on men and then go away on its own and so if you apply some Salve to it you think that the sap works and that you're better but it's actually more in your body women it's all the sores are internal so they don't know um the thing about you get to go to this place for a couple of days is because traditionally when someone had syphilis the way it was treated was with basically injections of heavy metals over a period of time so you basically would poison the syphilis um microorganism uh and not enough to poison you uh and so that was something that had to be done like every so many weeks or every so many months and so Public Health people had to go and track down people who had syphilis and give them the shot or tell them to come in to get a shot and 1948 they said a couple of days that means that chances are it was uh penicillin or some sulfa drug that they would administer a couple of times and that was basically concentrating the folks who had that stuff uh was you didn't have to hire as many nurses or public health people Statewide so you just say like oh everybody goes here and it's cost effective just to house them for a couple of days um that I think that's probably why that happened but uh it's really fascinating I mean this message is I have other films specifically films for the military that address the same things there's also uh at one point our main character looks at a poster uh that says no for sure well I have the film know for sure which uh is a lot a lot more explicit um there's some genitalia in that one um and it just talks about the same message like basically you gotta go get a test and then you have to get like legitimate treatment and not go to some quack anyways uh thanks for watching today um I love showing stuff like
