AV Geeks Lunch 2-2

hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show so we just watched a very long um reel of uh stock footage of uh basically stuff that coronet films coordinate made educational films and they would shoot things for shoot footage for their uh films but would probably shoot a little bit longer and what we saw was kind of the leftovers outtakes or stuff that they would keep for other productions that they would do so as you see it's a crazy mixed bag of stuff uh what i liked is reading your comments as we're going along trying to guess what things were uh i don't have any information beyond the weird three-letter codes that are on the reels and this this last one was two reels together um but yeah i have no sense of what uh what is on the films somewhere there's maybe a binder or a like a card catalog that has a listing of all the stuff but i haven't found it yet i got 14 pallets of things from the company that owns coronet films and these were in those boxes and so here we go just going through um watching some of them and i appreciate you indulging me in that i know that it's not for everybody uh but uh let's watch a film that has sound uh and the color is not as good it is uh feelings don't stay mad and i'm just gonna tell you as a warning there's uh puppets in this and i don't think they're very good puppets so here we go enjoy hey on now you guys been mad long enough i was real mad at my dad today everybody seems to be getting mad today i got a kite today and my dad wouldn't let me take the school what kind of thing it's a dragon kite come on give me the kite why can't i take it to school i'll take care of it because i told you it's gonna get broken if you take it to school i wanna take it to school to show the kids no it's gonna get all broken up now leave it here why can't i take it to school it's my kite i know it's your kite but you're gonna get it all broken before you have the chance to play with it now come on run on the school i wanna take the kite to school you're gonna be late now i said no now go on to school before you're late well i sat down to tie my shoe my little brother came out of the house melissa passed it on goonie and gooney gave it to her right i think everyone when they're mad they ought to talk it over with the person they're mad at that's chris checking this ball in chris mulligan you shouldn't have just come up and kicked my lunch i couldn't talk to dad because he just wouldn't listen to me then you should have kicked something else or punched something i punch my pillow when i get mad last week i got mad lou because he won't let me go on the trip because there's too many kids do you know what i did hi what you got there i can't picture you really oh boy that's horrible that's supposed to be me yeah yeah you didn't even give me a nose i can fix that oh shoot i remember one time lou got mad at me it was in a regular basketball what's the matter with you you want to be a champion don't you you know we got the big game next week get the bench right as i was sitting on the bench i imagined a big earthquake and just where lou was standing the whole earth open and crunch i don't want to see my dad get crunched but i'm still mad at him you could have talked to somebody what good would that do well you know talk to somebody you like somebody who understands that's what i do i just finished telling you guys hey i got an idea why don't we try acting this out okay okay we'll need somebody to be kevin somebody to be his father and a friend and school bus you'll never let me do anything go to school what do i do now how do you feel awful you feel mad fine herky tell him what happened tell him how you feel get the man out find him no hey cut that out talk about it i'm mad talk to him about it i'm mad are you mad at me no i'm mad at my dad because of the kite oh what happened he wouldn't let me take it to school said it might get broken or something i know how you feel it makes you feel that it wasn't your type yeah it's my kite i wanna do what i want with it but he wouldn't let you no he never lets me do anything no no no no that's all he ever says is no that's me yeah when somebody's mean it makes you mad yeah good herky you're a good listener kevin you think that would have helped you get over your math feeling well i guess but taking a part of my dad now i know why you wouldn't let me take the kite to school well do you think your dad was right no i don't think he was right because it was my kite and i i like them now i'm not mad at them anymore hey well that's cool you know hey gooney how did you feel about this did you get your mat out you still feel angry because of the kite yeah no then what are you mad at i'm mad at you me i'm mad at all of you at kevin and herky too hey come on why are you crying gooney because you hate me you all make fun of me nobody plays with me nobody lets me in their games or anything [Music] he said we're keeping him out of the game do you think that's so it didn't fair it's always my fault whatever happens it's always my fault if it rains it's my fault well it usually is your fault what i mean goodie how come the boys don't play with you because they're mean reason you don't get the play-doh games is because you're always hitting and sucking and wrecking the games that's because you're all against me every one of you and you're all against me that's why i don't like you any of you i didn't know you felt like that goony i mean i really didn't i'm sure glad you told us hey kids the volleyball card is empty you want to go play volleyball okay well come on hurry up hey i want to play too okay come on goony come on no it'll be just like always he'll start fights and he won't take turns and i'll hit people how about making the agreement hey kids listen up how about making an agreement just for the rest of this afternoon let's include gooney into all the games gooney this this film deserves a reworking uh modern day reworking of just goonie uh and i think this is a series i think there's other films uh feelings films that uh feature these puppets so um they're not very good but they're pretty awesome in my mind all right um let's figure out how pencils are made [Music] do [Music] um [Music] um [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] um [Music] so so [Music] [Music] so according to my notes that was our 12th hundredth film 1200th film um it's give or take uh because i have certainly shown some things that didn't get listed and i've shown things some things accidentally twice so it kind of comes out in the mix but 1200 um and it i i love that film uh it is uh uh the reason why i like it of course is assembly line footage um which is glorious i love that those kids at the end are kind of interested but not really um i also love that this uh was a precursor to the tv show the canadian tv show how it's made uh which you can see on the discovery channel or the science channel uh also they have a youtube channel and and you want to talk about sitting and drinking some coffee waking up in the morning watching them make a wide variety of things they make some really uh niche things but uh yes very much uh like uh the manufacturing process and the steps behind it now these are great uh i have a couple of these films in my collection um i i think i've shown the one on peanut butter uh in the past but yeah twelve hundredth film so thank you for the journey the long long journey uh that started uh in mid-march 2020 and um we're just going to keep going keep watching more films um and so thank you thank you so much uh i should say thank you for coffee uh somebody bought me some coffee uh kind of in the off hours i like these shows are got caught off guard there as a reminder so soundies are uh we're actually in little jukeboxes uh film jukebox is called panorams and um nightclubs would have them uh if they didn't have a band or orchestra and uh you'd put in a nickel or a d i think it was a nickel and it would play whatever was next in in the row uh as far as uh films and they featured sometimes known acts sometimes acts you didn't know uh songs you would know uh and that one was pretty uh pretty great had a lot of special effects in it which uh most soundies did not so there you go it's pretty awesome uh let's learn about creating cartoons one of the easiest and quickest ways of getting across an idea visually is through the use of the cartoon people are attracted to cartoons because they love to laugh and it's the cartoonist who is able to combine humor with ideas in the beginning stages sometimes referred to as blocking in it becomes very obvious that the circle or overlike variations of the circle can be an excellent way of beginning the cartoon start by concentrating all of your attention on the circle practice on all variations of the circle draw freely but firmly when you have accomplished this and can draw the circle well you have the basis for making cartoons for instance a head can be drawn simply by using nothing but circles or parts of circles by combining circle shapes and altering their sizes you can draw all kinds of things after your drawings are completed it's well to analyze them to see if your finished lines have accomplished their purpose your cartoon should be pleasant lively and appealing in the beginning if you are patient while practicing these simple things you'll find that soon you have developed the ability to extend them even the seasoned professional cartoonists uses the circle for blocking in many times the subject in finished form will seem to be very slightly influenced by the circle but if we study more closely we find that this cartoon cow is built almost entirely with circular construction drawing expressions may seem complicated to you the cartoonist through simplification shows us how easy it can be the elements which make an expression are the eyebrows the eyes and the mouth the nose may remain unchanged it has always been the practice of good cartoonists to use the mirror in planning expressions his own features will reflect to him the necessary information that he needs for a smile we notice several basic things the eyebrows are raised the eyes narrow into a crescent shape the mouth turned up at the corners when we have this information we find it a simple matter to transfer it to our cartoon for a frown the eyebrows are in a different place they're closer to the eyes the mouth is of course turned down we may exaggerate this in our cartoon crying is a more complicated expression but it too can be broken down into essentials the eyes and eyebrows are in about the same position as they were in the frowning expression but the eyes are now closed and the mouth is open and turned downward there is no end to the number of expressions you can figure out when practicing in front of a mirror merely simplify them for your cartoons it makes no difference from what angle you draw your expressions the basic idea remains the same in cartooning there is no real standard for proportion therefore the cartoonist can have fun in drawing things humorously rather than as they actually are the extravagant nose on the cook gives him a special sense of arrogance animals our favorite subject matter for the cartoonist especially when he can make them seem very human there's no rule for size and exaggeration accentuating certain objects sometimes contributes to the idea exaggeration may also deal with emotional things like this man suddenly falling in love we know that this doesn't happen but the effect is amusing and the point comes across if you take advantage of your right to exaggerate there are several ways to get the feeling of action or movement in cartoons simple stick figures can give you the general structure of any pose you're going to draw study all types of action notice the position of a person running a simple outline will then accomplish your statement here is a car quietly standing still on the paper a few motion lines here and there a shadow underneath and a tilted position are enough to suggest that the car is in action drawing the same form in slightly differing positions is another way of showing action a man drawn with his head in three positions seems to be in utter confusion he just doesn't know where to turn cartoonists also use words and implied action to give movement to their work through the use of the motion picture camera cartoonists have given us a whole new world of motion but remember that all the cartoony moving on the screen are actually many still drawings and differences of action in the finished motion picture the still drawings are bind by use of the camera into an animated cartoon remember that the circle will be of great help to you in creating cartoons circular variations will make it possible for you to draw all sorts of things with a free and flowing movement expressions are made by using the eyebrows the eyes and the mouth remember the mirror will help you in forming cartoon expressions there are several ways of showing action you may use motion lines around the figure you may repeat a form over and over in differing positions use lettering and suggestion and above all observe and learn from the attitudes of objects and people in action exaggeration is used to make your cartoons funny and effective there is no rule about exaggeration in cartooning you must rely on your imagination to become a professional cartoonist takes years of study and training just as it does for any highly skilled profession you may never wish to become a pro but you like doing drawings that you can put to your own use add this to your skills and enjoy cartooning just for the fun of it [Music] exaggerate that was awesome all right um i think i should have shown minnie last it seems like a good closer but um what else do i have queued up here of what we got maybe maybe something something something i should say uh somebody asked me what the oldest film that i have is and that it it kind of depends and what i mean by that is that um 16 millimeter which i collect the most uh kind of got its start in 1923 but i have films that predate that that were printed to 16 millimeter kind of after the fact so i have stuff from the late eighteen hundreds uh by 1890 the emilie's um some of his trick films which are really great i was gonna look and see if i actually had those here and i'm not seeing them alas um i know you're loving me watching me scroll through a list of directories to see what i have um i'm kind of at a loss here um some of the stuff i've shown some of the stuff you're not interested in all right well i've got this lined up so here is um something that's actually proved to be very important nowadays and that is the visiting nurse the nurse that actually comes to you my wife gets a treatment from the nurse who become good friends with uh and so that way she doesn't have to go into a waiting room and um so here it is visiting nurse [Music] [Music] good morning visiting your service i'll be glad to help you i'll check with your panels okay all right i'll check on that for you and let you know you're welcome bye now [Music] good morning how are you fine uh mrs klein called she was wondering if you were planning a visit today yes i am uh i will be seeing her sometime this afternoon but i will give her a call before i leave the office oh that's good how is she doing with her new walker well let's say we're getting there slowly but surely she is anxious and this is what's important ah the clinic also called on judy malin she still hasn't kept any of her clinic appointments her name is gloria roberts she's a visiting nurse in the next few hours she will visit and help a variety of people with different needs it isn't always easy but she doesn't mind she knows her job and she likes people [Music] now mrs klein position yourself to the edge of the bed slowly now place your hands here on each side of the walkerette now raise yourself up slowly certainly slowly now balance yourself fine we're going to place no weight on the bad leg now slowly walk forward do you have any pain no fine can i do this with her certainly mr klein how often take her up and down the hallway three times a day i see would you like to try some more yes please slowly now very good [Music] how is it a little higher than what it was last with mr grimaldi have you been taking your medicines yeah you've been following your diet well i went to the clinic and they told me what i should eat but when i came back i i forgot well we'll discuss that a little bit later but would you like me to call the hospital for a diet slip yeah i i appreciate it hello mrs smith this is mrs roberts the visiting nurse i'm calling regards to mr grimaldi yes he's in need of a diet slip could one be sent out to him immediately thank you very much [Music] mind the baby has grown since the last time i saw her oh yes she certainly has she's being like a horse how is the foot uh well um i don't think you've seen it since the doctor took the cast off would you like to take a look at it certainly okay okay there we go [Music] how does it look well the range of motion seems very good should i continue with the exercises i spoke to the doctor and he wishes you to continue on with the exercises as he planned for good i'll do that [Music] [Music] your temperature is normal mr wilson how do you feel fine but what can i get out of bed well i spoke to your doctor he said your lungs are clearing but you still require a few more weeks in bed yes but i need to go back to work do you receive compensation yes still but i'd like to get back to work is boring into bed all the time how was his diet mrs wilson pretty good well mr wilson you were very sick at one time now you're on the way to recovery yes but i'm used to working it's just going to take some patience mr [Music] wilson [Music] judy mrs laurie called and she was quite concerned that you didn't keep your clinic appointment you know in your early months of pregnancy you have to have close supervision were there any problems will you tell me what the problem is judy does my mother have to come with me i'm afraid she does but miss laurie she will be there with you would you like me to make an appointment for you yes don't worry we'll all help you as much as we can hello this is gloria roberts visiting nurse yes mrs trudy how are you yes i'm calling regards to judy malen yes we have been able to break through she will be keeping her appointment thank you goodbye [Music] so nurses are special people gloria roberts was graduated from high school in miami florida she came to new york and enrolled in the lincoln school of nursing three years later she was graduated as a registered nurse and shortly after she joined the visiting nurse service of new york her days are long her feet often hurt she has to know her job she can't afford to make mistakes she can't always solve her patients problems but she loves her work nurses are special people uh so that was uh part of a series of films uh cole i think it's called see a job and it was uh aimed towards african americans and what types of careers that they could pursue uh but certainly they work for for anybody um and so basically what it shows is it shows like the day in the life of whatever and so i've shown some the air stewardess air traffic controller i don't know if i've shown the machinist yet um but it just kind of shows their day and then at the end uh it shows like what you would have to do after graduating from high school like what courses you would have to take and what certification and all that so um yeah it's a pretty interesting series because it shows you know it's a little dramatized but it shows what it was like to work in that field at that time certainly the stewardess one is fascinating because it shows um you know how things have changed as far as air travel but uh yeah i like it so somebody asked me like what was causing that weird kind of in the center that weird little greenish spark and that is basically a hole that was punched by a sprocketed wheel at some point some teacher accidentally missed thread the projector so that the little sprocketed wheel clamped down on the film and it's usually at the end past the gate so they didn't see it and it's basically just rolls the film through and it's just punching holes throughout the entire film so it's very sad to see that and my early days when i had projectors that weren't so great i certainly have done that and i've perforated a film where it wasn't supposed to be perforated so um thanks everybody for tuning in today for our 1200th film this is our 281st show so uh we'll be back tomorrow and if things go as planned i'll have a special guest um he's an old friend of mine uh probably nobody that you know unless you live in raleigh but um he's known me as i was collecting from films early on and my early band days et cetera but um yeah so hopefully he'll
