hello everybody welcome i'm skip alzheimer and this is our lunchtime streaming show and my hair is kind of crazy um hope most of you have power and water and heat uh we were supposed to maybe get some sleep in raleigh but um there is what's called the raleigh force field uh and it keeps us from getting frozen precipitation most of the time uh so thanks i guess um at least in this case uh i'm wearing sometimes people are like who is that is that ted bundy um this is a t-shirt uh made by ron liberty who's in uh chapel hill uh who's in the band pipe um and this is of our former beloved weatherman uh greg fischel who used to work for wral and who uh used to be our voice of weather and would super geek out he left wral under mysterious circumstances but is in florida and we'll in facebook he actually talks about our weather so he has so many fans and he always looks at data weather data regarding uh snow and hurricanes and still chimes in because he's a hobbyist and because he loves to geek out about weather so he is very much beloved um probably working with him was not the best and which is why he probably left wral all right um so we watch old 16 millimeter films here and you guys uh have been watching for us with us for almost a year coming up on uh year in mid-march uh and so we've got a film uh on the telecity and this that's uh let's find some faces [Music] what are you doing [Music] i'm trying to see how many shapes of faces i can find me too here's a face that's round and sad here's a square face that's happy here's a happy face bats shaped like a rectangle what can you tell about this face well it's sort of round oval shaped what else and it's sad i mean happy i mean angry and what hey would you make up your mind now it's the happy and now it's not sad now it's not angry how do you know let's look at the eyes and the mouth if you're happy the mouth would be turned up and if you were sad the mouth would be turned down and the eyebrows would be turned up okay look at these faces and tell me what you see it's a happy face that shaped like a square and this one it's a sad face that shaped like a circle what do you see in this one it's an angry face look at his eyes and mouth he really looks angry i wonder why let's make him look happy that's better hey what's he doing now he's thinking about something how do you know sometimes faces do that now it's my turn what about these two faces the one on the left side with the light color skin and the one on the right side had the dark color skin what shapes are they the light skin face is square the dark skin face is round and the square one is sad and the round one is happy [Music] yeah okay i've got one for you what can you tell about these faces there are two of them i know that what else the square one is smaller than the round one now the square one is larger than the round one now they're about the same size let me ask you one what can you tell me about these faces there are two square ones it's two round ones what else the round ones are larger than the square ones now they're all about the same size what shape are these faces the girl's face is round the boy's face is square the round faces happy the square face is sad here are two different shaped faces what do you see in them the happy face is normal shaped the sad face is shaped like a rectangle but they're about the same size now the oval-shaped phase is smaller than the rectangle that makes her sad this will make the oval face the same size as the rectangle now she's happy again [Music] look at these two faces and tell me what's different about them one has a small mouth she looks sad the other one has a big smile she looks happy what's the same about these faces these have two eyes one nose and one mouth and we're both shaped like ovals and the same size now what do you see that's different the sad one is smaller than the happy one well that makes her sadder so make her bigger again now there are two happy oval faces that are the same size what can you tell from looking at all the faces together three grown-ups three children they all had two eyes one nose two ears one mouth two have dark skin four has like skin three you have black hair three have brown hair and the man in second row is a very good father how do you know that because he's my [Music] daddy [Music] wow that that film has uh you know certainly is made was made for a certain age kid to kind of learn about faces and you know how to interpret them and all that but the implications of it especially in the facial recognition world and also uh in uh trying to uh i guess uh epic games which is uh based in cary north carolina uh they just released uh some new software which allows them to create fairly realistic images of people and um you know we enter into that that whole realm of what is called the uncanny valley where things start to approximate what is human and there's this kind of gap where our um our brains start going something hmm something's not right about that person and you know what is it that's not right is it that there's their stare isn't correct is it because there's their gestures on their faces aren't absolutely correct and so it's kind of that weird thing and so this film you know certainly means one thing to little kids beginning to learn about faces and what phases mean and interpreting facial gestures which is something they've probably been learning you know since birth um but then there's that other aspect to this and that's i love this is why i collect films and why i show films is because it sometimes shows these um extra things and they bring up things that are in current events um fascinating stuff um but what i would like to know is how can you get more fun per the gallon this film will tell us i'm jim bergendahl manager of customer relations for johnson outboards the subject of fuel is on just about everyone's mind these days at johnson outboards fuel economy is not a new subject but now we'd like to give you some tips on how you can have more fun for each gallon of gasoline [Music] there are four big areas of fuel conservation for boaters engine and boat performance correct boat handling good boating practices and correct trailering and launching techniques [Music] good boat performance can increase your fun on less gas it's true your outboard should have power to plane your boat easily even at reduced speeds propellers can save gas you want one that makes your rig perform like it's supposed to keep that prop clean and free of any nicks on the blades proper rigging saves fuel your outboard should be as high on the transom as possible without causing the propeller to slip or cavity spark plugs should be clean and properly gapped follow the tune-up recommendations in your owner's manual anti-fouling paint will help keep the bottom of your boat clean and that means better performance find the best steering trim tab alignment to keep your boat running straight find the best angle adjustment [Music] not too high not too low rearrange gear and passengers if necessary for the best planing attitude another gas saver don't idle around unnecessarily the way you drive is very important in a boat you can save gasoline by accelerating smoothly and rapidly the sooner you get your boat on a plane the better after you get on a plane throttle back throttle back as far as you can and still keep the boat on a comfortable smooth plane this is important as you can save as much as 50 percent of the fuel you would otherwise use drive straight keep a steady speed here are some of the boating practices that increase your fun and decrease the expense fishermen and water skiers can form boat pools just like carpools plan your boating trips carefully and reduce the running time no sense in doubling back in search of a fishing hole if you've already been in that area and when the wind is right drift fishing will eliminate a lot of unnecessary starting and stopping skiers can get in their skiing time and cut their boating expense almost in half by skiing doubles you can save gas and time with some proper trailering launching and refueling techniques follow those reduced speed requirements check tire pressures all around both car and trailer [Music] temporarily at least forego those long trips go boating close to home know where you're going and you'll save time and fuel fueling your boat is an important area too no spills allowed mix the oil accurately launch and retrieve your boat as quickly as possible you'll save time and expense for yourself and for other boaters these are just some of the ways that you can save gas and have more fun too you may know of others and that's good let's all do our part more fun per gallon it's worth the effort whoops it just kind of ended abruptly um yeah so that's a promotional film uh but also some general information about how to save gas uh during the energy crisis um because gas was very expensive back then it was almost a dollar gallon um right this next film is a uh i showed this during a show i did call the last time we were green and this is a film about the environment um and specifically pollution visual uh pollution uh pollution of litter and such and so here it is land betrayed [Music] never have so many americans gone looking for america never have there been so many visitors from overseas many travelers ask what should i look for if we made a film to show them we could photograph some of the most beautiful natural scenes in the world we could record man-made marvels to rival anything in europe or the orient [Music] we could also show perhaps less spectacular beauty that americans have created nearly everywhere [Music] there are some things however that we wouldn't want to show some scenes we wouldn't want in our film this presents a problem because wherever they go our travelers can't help seeing something that can be described with one word one word that according to the dictionary means unattractive unpleasant offensive unsightly objectionable ominous the word is ugliness and it is ominous for the generations of the future if we don't begin to do something about it now [Music] we may not be personally responsible for any of it but we are responsible for letting it survive and grow [Music] there are several areas where the cancer of ugliness has set in first the approaches to almost every city and town in the country [Music] and in the cities and towns even on the way to the concert hall the theater and the art museum is ugliness [Music] on the road to our scenic wonderlands from the great smokies to the cascades more ugliness within the scenic wonderlands themselves we spread ugliness in yellowstone national park one of our most spectacular natural attractions geysers and pools must be continually cleaned to remove the litter thrown into them by [Music] sightseers in mount rainier national park another kind of ugliness names inscribed by vandals must be hand scoured from glacier rocks in an expensive erasure procedure these rocks are among the great wonders of the area they show the marks of the ice sheets that form the land in ages past and finally our waterfronts on lakes on rivers and on the beach [Music] [Music] have you ever heard someone say why don't they do something about it but who are they they of course are you and me [Music] there are two definite steps we must take we must subtract the elements of ugliness then in most cases we must add something of beauty the job is already started here's what some people have been doing civic brigades have been organized to collect roadside junk and litter in many communities laws prohibit unsightly junk dumps along highways fire ordinances have been passed in many states to make weed grown lot cleanup mandatory many responsible companies have screened old car graveyards with fencing [Music] dilapidated buildings can be condemned as dangerous or as fire hazards definite steps are being taken to refurbish our waterfronts and waterways so far it is no more than a start we need expanded effort in this whole area [Music] the anti-letter organization keep america beautiful estimates that the cost of cleaning up litter from public and private lands is one billion dollars a year this is money that could be used for worthwhile projects in every community there is positive action that can be taken to subtract local ugliness then it will be much easier to add beauty this to a great extent is concerned with planning with seeding beauty for the future one good example is private enterprise planting flowers on park avenue in new york city we can also plant greenery on street sides and around our homes in almost any town usa when columbus came ashore there was very little ugliness on this continent the poet said happy the land that has no people this means happy and undefiled the land where people have never lived [Music] it is true people are the only ones who can make america ugly and people are the only ones who can restore and protect its beauty this is for you and me [Music] let us work to make the poet wrong let us not betray this land so that in spite of great history progress and a nation teeming with life we can prune back the growth of ugliness we will seed beauty everywhere for this great land again [Music] uh lady bird johnson this goes out to you uh this was all about her keep america beautiful campaign that took down a lot of billboards and um addressed some of the decay urban decay on the fringes of big cities and things like that um yeah it's kind of interesting because that's you know keep america beautiful it's all about the visual aspect of it and so um you know picking up litter and not thinking about the the hidden things that are actually a problem for us now which are uh micro things of plastic carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases um other things that are not seen or or uh yeah visible oh fascinating stuff all right so this next film is great i love 70s films about advertising and this one is wonderful i don't even know if in current educational criteria or curriculum if they even talk about thinking critically about advertising i would like to think they do i hope that they do because i think that's the most important thing because uh advertising is pervasive in everything we do and um you know teaching someone to be critical of it is i mean it's like a life skill now so uh here is the six billion dollar sale or sell [Music] it's a dynamite tv commercial and you wanna let the good times [Music] you have all that tv in your soul [Music] they say that it's yummy you'll try anything you can try got a bite the six billion dollar sell [Music] wow look at all these commercials and make you want to buy everything you see i mean they have so many waste made products look great i mean just just look at all these fantastic techniques they use to uh get you to buy stuff like do you know the one where they use these famous people selling the star compared to most people i spent a lot more time with wet hair so i like a styler that really dries fast so i get that full natural look in just minutes and that's good because i don't like to keep my wife susie waiting hey put this idea into your head that if you buy their products you'll be really cool like the stars [Applause] come on what are you doing in there oh i'm sorry ethel i'm getting that full natural look i'll be right out okay get it someplace else move it yes dear i'll be right down [Music] the women you know they flocked to me since i got that full natural look you know what i mean and comb your hair yes honey i'll be right i'll be right there i'll be right down it's tough being a champion well maybe you don't fall for the star treatment but have you ever seen something on tv that looked great and when you got it home it just didn't seem the same now you see it now you don't [Music] we saw the commercial for evil knievel on television and we saw that it done some pretty miraculous stunt so we decided to test it out for ourselves and as we found out many times it never went even over the ramp see in the commercials they use many different cameras all pointing in different angles so they can get the best and when they get the best from each one of them they put them all together and they have a very good commercial the tv commercial showed the jump going very far and we noticed that could never happen i mean it really went very far when it jumped over the ramp and when we tried it you know it just went over a little bit and at one point a piece broke off many times the product is okay but it's not as good as they seem other products do it also well you see you have this talking gi joe and it has a string right and i kept pulling it and pulling in and then it got jammed like it would stay in one place and then i tried to fix it and then when i pulled it the string came out and then no more talking gi job they also use music sometimes if it's a dramatic scene with your gi joe they have this great music imagine the gi joe talking commander is in trouble once again it makes it seem like such a great story like it's in the movies or something and then there's this sales pitch everything is new new new new [Music] they say everything's so new and improved everything you know when they run out of anything else to say about they see that it's new and improved has a newer flavor or something and then there are other tricks they play with words word games thank you thank you so much and welcome to name that claim that's great i'm your host bob teeth and what a show we got for you today do you know the rules what we do is this we show you commercials from television we ask you a question about it the person who buzzes and gets it right wins got it good okay here's our first commercial coming up right now hey be careful there's a little hidden catch in this one here it comes my hair is stronger bouncier and cleaner than ever before earthborn is the first low ph non-alkaline shampoo i ever used see it doesn't turn this ph test paper dark okay here's our question oh it's a tough one put your thinking caps on for this is low ph non-alkaline shampoo actually better than alkaline i don't know you're absolutely right oh that's great huh isn't it thanks so much that's beautiful huh oh is this exciting does he get a radar range for that see this product is with stannous fluoride this is with floristan and this is for our mfp mfp that means absolutely nothing to me prilled enzymes have you ever heard of that yes on television what does it mean i don't know thrilled safe to use on material [Music] on this scope it says t25 what does that mean to you t25 geez i really have no idea it has on the label it has t25 in it what does that mean to you what do the words mean t25 nothing matches they're just there i have no idea what ph balance means what does softer scent mean to you softer scent it sounds ridiculous i think that's funny take a look at this the giveaway when i was a little boy i always used to send away to battle creek michigan for a terrific toy that was advertised my favorite cereal and i'd wait and wait and wait and then it would come and it would be dinky it never would look like it did on the box but now cereals today they had the best toys they looked terrific i mean inside free prize right and it's easy to get to but there it is right away and it's terrific and it's stinky but it doesn't matter it doesn't matter because look what i've got here let's see i get old things like this right in here it's easy to get to boy it's fresh and right there here here it is and it's stinky that's okay wait look big live dog inside let's see let's get it right where is this hey boy look i never liked cereal anyway ads do seem to promise a lot and not just things like uh free prizes promises promises a thirst that won't settle the ads show that everybody's having such a good time they're telling you that if you buy their product you'll have a good life too fun romance excitement friends good looks all the good things but what you really get is the product not the promises i like my lips to look delicious not dry to shine with fresh color that stays on and on [Music] we do swallow a lot of what the ads say sometimes more than we realize brand loyalty i buy brand names usually because i try several and i pick the one i like and then i stick with it well i'd buy um stuff that really faith in that i know they'll really be good like famous companies i'll buy from not from these new people i've never even heard of [Music] hey look at me copycat cents less ah nobody'll notice hey i'm the favorite show off yay noisy fella watch this underneath the noise he's not so different [Music] listen shoppers oh i hope i get picked i am cheaper hey my fans are loyal here they come here i go sorry smoothie i think i'll try this for a change [Applause] the brand names really don't matter if unless i they know that one is better than the other you do have choices and it does help to know the games they're playing you don't have to go along if you don't want to you should tell them that you know they want this because the commercial looks cute and everything that you have to really think about this because sometimes they're just trying to be the most appealing as they can get they're trying to be really cute not too tatsy for the little kids who are watching and so they'll bug their parents and their parents will just get it for them and then they say well you'll be cool if you buy this product and and everybody goes like well fonzie says i should i'll be cool if i'd buy it then certainly i should buy it you know and um so they go out and buy it and they go this isn't cool i mean they just make fake people in suburban homes and everything they don't do that never show anything in the city and they're sitting there and there are beautiful kitchens with the modern appliances and they say i use joy for my dishes they've worked four out of five dentist surveys into your head so much that you always connected with trident and that's how you always remember tried it not because it tastes good or anything because four out of five dentists surveyed recommend cheer goes down for patients to grow the cereals they're all alike they taste all the same they just um change the um shapes of them but they're all like what they usually do is they have a cartoon character with a fake spoon and you see this real bowl of cereal and he's like this ready to eat it you say oh this real cool character eats it i'm gonna eat it but what you have to do i guess to see if you like a food or something is to try it and if you don't like you say that's not the list that's it it costs money but if you saw like a um some advertisement that really did not say anything about the um product i would be a little wary like you know if you saw something like please don't screw this squeeze the shaman i would examine it um or i would not bother buying it do i really want this i mean well i get good use out of it and if it just if you do this sometimes you find the toy is not all that great yeah like most toys kids just use it for a few days and all of a sudden just throw it in the closet and keep it there for the rest of his life yeah it's got your attention for a few days and then that's it they'll guarantee you coming back by you buy a barbie you get a barbie and say buy clothes you buy clothes buy a townhouse you get a townhouse buy furniture you get furniture they're guaranteeing you just coming back and spending money spending money and that's it like the kids say there are a lot of things you've got to think about like you won't really be cool if you buy things just because a famous person uses them or because they look good on tv i mean look out for the fancy words like a non-outline and all this new new stuff and hey those free prizes forget it i mean what's really important is what the product has going for it not all the big promises in the ads when you really come down to it by what you want for your own reasons not because some commercial told you so [Music] they say you've got a lot to live for while living right is up to you beware compare every gimmick they use makes it hard to refuse that's the name of the game advertise you know that money can't [Music] [Music] don't always believe what you see you are free you are free you are free if you've got a penny in your pocket [Music] it may give you the itch that's the name of the game advertise every gimmick they use makes it hard to refuse that's the name of the game at the time that's the name of the game [Music] [Music] one that film was awesome um and it definitely speaks to me because those are the toys that uh were being marketed in the cereal that was being marketed directly to me as a kid so uh it just feels it it you know i feel it in my heart i feel in my stomach um that kind of sense of betrayal with my evil knievel i had the snake river uh stun cycle which was looked like a rocket um and it was it never worked it was always a problem um i had gi joe but the talking gi joe just seemed too extravagant uh absurd and uh what i like about this uh film from a teaching standpoint is that uh who is the person who are the people that are talking it's mostly kids it's mostly kids talking to other kids and that's part of a trend that was happening in educational films during that time is like they realize that kids will listen to other kids and so having the you know the main messages being relayed by kids who are speaking frankly carries a lot of weight and i still think that's the case nowadays um so to have your peers or people that are a little bit older than you who uh you look up to telling you like yeah those ads are just not valid anymore it carries a lot of weight um so god i love that film so great and it was mostly uh women staff that made it um pretty awesome i think it's time for clocks [Applause] [Music] big clocks little clocks alarm clocks that ring round clocks air [Music] watch the little bird he's telling you what hickory dickory dock clocks see them straight in faces shining brightly as they stand along the wall clocks are pretty wonderful in a special sort of way they tell us just what time it is at any time of day at night time too they work and work as the hours move ahead keeping track of passing time for you asleep in bed when morning comes the clock still works to tell you many things time to rise come on now and see what this day brings seven o'clock your day begins the clock is helping you it's telling you to be on time for all that you must do morning time is wake up time there's really lots to do so wash your hands and wash your face and ears need scrubbing too the clock has changed look at it now the small hands move to eight the family knows it's breakfast time father sees it's time for work and soon is on his way see you later father says and he's off to stay mothers packed a healthful lunch good food to help you grow now it's time for you to leave and off to school you go at school the clock has changed again its hands continue turning salute the flag and sing a song time for learning for reading books about new friends adventures that they share surprises wait on every page for us to find them there then the clock points to the hour that says it's time for play brings it friendly kim's is a happy time of day now more to learn before the morning skips along its way numbers and arithmetic lots to do and say using colors painting pictures the morning's almost through clocks can help you and your time a time for cleanup too it's been a busy morning lunchtime's coming soon the clock helped you get ready for 12 o'clock noon the lunch hour seems the shortest though atlanta from 12 to 1. time seems to pass more quickly when you're busy having fun after lunch it's plate then the hour really speeds with jumping feet and swing ropes a hundred happy deeds back into the classroom there the clock is keeping track the small hand shows it's one o'clock an hour and we are back let's put a clock together now first we'll need its face later we'll add the numbers each one in its place now we're ready to begin every number has a name let's say their names together as we play a number game ready begin one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve look at all the numbers there from one to twelve they grow moving in a circle path around the face they go one o'clock it's afternoon two and three and four five o'clock and six o'clock and still some numbers more seven o'clock it's night time the evening hours are here eight o'clock and nine o'clock now ten o'clock is near eleven o'clock and twelve o'clock it's midnight and then the numbers all start over and it's one o'clock again one o'clock it's dark outside two and three and four five o'clock and six o'clock and day begins once more seven o'clock the sun is up and morning's on its way eight o'clock and nine o'clock another bright new day 10 o'clock 11 o'clock and 12 o'clock comes soon 12 o'clock in den 12 o'clock noon twice we've said the hours names for sleep for work for play twice we've gone around the clock for one full night and day our play clock isn't finished there's something to be done both the hands are missing but first we'll add just one slowly the little hand really moves as time keeps ticking past to help us learn we'll speed it up and change the hours fast we'll watch the hand move quickly as it helps us tell the time when it stops let's say the hour together and in rhyme ready now here it goes it keeps on moving more careful now read the clock it tells us that it's four move along right past five right past six and seven eight and nine and ten are gone the time must be eleven on past twelve and back to one the clock now seems like it moves ahead and soon will stop the hour now is fine let's read one more time on the clock you're really doing fine watch it move it soon to tell us that it's nine only has one hand have two let's add a long hand to our clock and see what it will do this time watch what happens when the small hand moves to one the big hand moves much faster back to where it has begun did you see it look again as the small hand moves to two all around the big hand goes to pass all numbers through let's stop the big hand halfway around and see what it will do both hands upon the clock now show that it is half past two the big hands on its way again let's see what we can see the hands upon the clock now show that it is half past three half past three what does that mean it means it's not yet four the time is just halfway between three and one hour more now the clock is telling us as the big hand circles more it's past the hour of four o'clock so it must be half power now watch both hands move again as they help us tell the time when they stop let's read the clock together and in rhyme on they move slow small hand big hand seems alive soon they reach half past tower half past five once again the hands move on ready don't be late half past six half and now it's half past eight clocks work for you they help you wow so the uh the color on that was beautiful which tells me something uh because you have all the splices as well and um i have run across films where it's beautiful kodachrome footage but the film itself is it's very brittle so somebody in the past um rewound it and it just kind of shredded like pieces of fragments of it just fell apart and so somebody at a library had to sit and meticulously splice it back together um just i've run across those before where it's like wow the film this film is beautiful kodachrome and it's it's like oh wow you can just twist it and it snaps um so there that's my take on that um thanks everybody for tuning in today and thank you peter for uh buying us some coffee here's a link i'm pointing at uh at www.fineyacoffee.com av geeks um buying coffee is one way that you can show your support and love for av geeks by uh sending volts of electricity to our nervous systems when things get tedious and which they do at av geeks but it's a tdm i love i spend a good percentage of my day looking at databases and spreadsheets and uh for some reason i don't care it's it's what i get out of it is is glorious and fun and enjoyable so um yeah uh so buying coffee is a way to do that to keep me popping uh you can also hit like and subscribe and notifications there's all these different ways on different social media to say that i want to know more about what this person or this whatever this video that's being broadcast i want to know more about this and i want to know about future times that this person is going live uh and you also can go to avgeeks.com uh to see what we're up to um we're digitizing stuff all the time and some things we put on youtube some things uh we show during these streaming shows uh for example today um i found some more hard drives that of stuff that we have not shown yet so i'm um making impact fours of that and that'll be stuff that you'll be able to watch in upcoming uh shows uh we have literally thirty thousand plus films that were ditched going through and digitizing a bunch every week and showing them to you and so thank you so much for your eyeballs and your time and we'll be back again tomorrow friday um to watch more films as always we look inside our film cans for advice on how to live our lives and it tells us to please rewind and to love each other and um that's good advice so please take care of yourselves i hope uh those of you who um are in areas hit by uh winter weather uh still will have electricity can keep warm and uh you know live a relatively okay life in spite of all the winter weather i will see you again tomorrow take care you
