hello everybody welcome i'm skip alzheimer and this is our av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we just watched a bunch of silent footage from coronet educational films uh that these are outtakes or these were shots that were shot for uh coronet productions and these were leftovers and they were all put on um one big reel and you could see they jumped all over the place it's kind of kind of nuts so um today's president's day in uh the united states which means that the post office isn't open so let's watch this film about post office [Music] [Music] have you written to your grandmother yet she sent you that lovely birthday present you've got to write her a thank you letter i don't know what to write help me all right get a piece of that red writing paper an envelope to go with it and a pen do i have to yes you do what should i write okay write this dear grandma thank you for the swell birthday [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] uh grandma thank you for the swell birthday present i've eyes wanted a white shirt and a clip-on bow tie love charlie [Music] [Music] uh so i've shown some other hot dog films and i have plenty more to show but that one's pretty great again love assembly line slash mail sorting footage um it's pretty great in 1970 and i believe that this was shown besides being distributed to schools this was also shown on um saturday morning as a way to counter balance all the advertising and cartoons on saturday morning to say like look uh networks were saying look we do have educational content and i have quite a few films from that time period that tried to do that to offer some entertaining short uh uh educational content the more you know okay um let's see choice here between two cornet films let's go with our big round world [Music] it's a fine spring morning in a little town near new york the children are on their way to school there's time for them to play before school while they're playing how would you like to take a fast trip around the world let's pretend that our plane can go a million miles an hour here we go on this globe we can trace our flight our special plane will take us quickly across the ocean to the land of spain let's land in spain and look around well look there are children going home from school it must be a different time of day in spain let's hurry on and see if there are different times all around the world look it's getting dark we'll land for a minute in persia or iran it's early evening here the shepherds have gathered in their plots as we fly on across asia it is night we'll stop again at tokyo japan it's the middle of the night here there are only a few cars and trucks about now to hurry on across the great wide pacific ocean back to america we'll pause in california to watch the sunrise it's going to be a beautiful morning isn't it but we started school hasn't even begun yet when we took our trip we found that on one side of the world it was bright daylight and on the other side it was dark night let's see if we can understand this all our daylight on earth comes from the sun light from the sun falls on the side of the earth that is turned toward the sun here on this side of the earth it is daytime on the other side it is dark so we say that it is night but we must remember that the earth turns when we look at the earth from a position above the north pole we can see that people everywhere on the earth spend part of the time in daylight and as their part of the earth turns away from the sun they spend part of the time in the darkness of night this is why we can stay in any one place on earth and see both day and night as the earth turns us first toward the sun then away from it day and night the earth turns toward the east if you face toward the rising sun you are facing east and west is behind you the big round world keeps turning the great bodies of land called continents turn toward the sun one after another and the still greater bodies of water called oceans have their day and night it takes 24 hours for the earth to turn once but we'll have our globe slow down until we can't see it moving so we can take a different kind of trip we'll start near the north pole on a spring day here the climate is cold and snowy even though the sun is shining now we'll fly south so quickly it will stay the same time of day in new york we find that the weather is pleasant the air is cool but the sun is warm from new york we hurry farther south in cuba it is very warm and the workers are harvesting sugarcane still farther south along the amazon river in brazil we find a hot steaming jungle it seems the farther south we go the warmer it gets what will happen if we go farther our next stop is in southern brazil why it is not so hot here it's warm and sunny but there's a pleasant breeze now we'll go on south to see what happens to the climate next when we stop near the south pole we look out on freezing cold and snow if we made a trip around the other side of the world we'd find again that it gets warmer and warmer as we come near the middle of the earth and then cooler and cooler as we go on toward the poles do you know why it's because the sun does not warm the earth evenly its warmest around the middle of the earth where the sun seems to be straight overhead so an object placed near the middle of our globe casts almost no shadow but as we look toward one of the poles of the earth we can see that the sun's rays come in at more and more of a slant these slanting rays don't warm the earth as much that is why it is colder near the poles on globes of the earth we draw a line all the way around halfway between the poles this line is called the equator along the equator are lands with very hot climates in south america in africa in the east indies let's draw two more lines on our globe these lines are the same distance north and south of the equator they are called the north tropic and the south tropic near these lines we find tropical warm climates where there is enough rainfall as in cuba we find great plantations where tropical crops are grown where there is little rain as in north africa few plants can grow and we find hot barren deserts there are two more important lines to notice these lines are near the poles they are called the arctic circle and the antarctic circle near these lines we find cold climates where there is snow all year round most of us live in what are called the middle latitude regions of the earth in these regions we have four seasons we have pleasant mild springs that melt the snow and allow plants to grow we have warm summers long enough for many crops to grow summer changes to autumn with its cooler weather and then winter begins with its brisk cold do you know why we have these seasons in the middle latitudes could you use a globe to find out you'll often find other lines around the globe from east to west that help us find regions of various climates you'll also find lines from north to south that help us tell the time of day or night as we go around the world would you like to take a trip around the world why not take a make-believe trip now see how much you can learn from the globe about the real world we live on [Music] i like that narrator um uh i think she shows up in a lot of the the films that are meant for younger uh children um younger students also i like the uh the heavy kid who was at the end with the globe he he shows up in a lot of cornet films and uh he is a little bit heavier than most of the other students at that time although i think nowadays he would probably be normal wait um thank you ross and brian for coffee one way their stuff this is called for your payroll and it has a lot of really amazing early computer footage which i just get very excited about especially the colors are really good in this film so for your payroll [Applause] nature with one exception time but it is possible to save it and to make it available to others almost as if you could bottle it and put it on the market time to ask questions time to get answers lots of answers millions of answers a second the kind of answers you need answers that give you information today management needs more information than ever before more accurate information faster how fast this office had twice as many girls working twice as fast it wouldn't be fast enough h byron kenneth p what you just heard was the sound of 26 000 names being processed electronically how fast was it it would take a single bookkeeper an entire lifetime who would an electronic company do in two hours we call this electronic data processing edp to do the same thing the staff of this particular office would have to change from this to this it's not surprising when you come to think about it this is the 20th century every familiar field has a new look today a new look that comes of having new problems to solve this is our new look space age banking at the speed of light where did it come from like all discoveries it was a fresh combination of familiar things somebody once combined coal air and water and produced [Music] nylon usage everything from parachutes and tires to blouses and stockings we combined patterns recording and electronics and came up with computers uses no limit the newest use we have payroll service not just checks and a record but checks on everything on hours worked on the time a given tended machine is in use on the time it takes different employees to perform similar jobs let's see how this new service works how many steps from here to here one two three four five pretty fast eh so fast we'd better have that one again only slowly this time with a few words of explanation initially and only once you enter the names of your employees on these registers you also enter whatever payroll data is applicable then you send the register to us you do this only once after that it is only necessary for you to forward changes to us to be posted at our data processing center the data is punched into data processing cards the cards are fed into the computer and out come the checks and the statements and the records and the payroll data and the answers to questions lots of questions when your checks are ready we will notify you that's all there is to it accurate the odds are 10 million to one in your favor fast if you had taken edp at the beginning of this announcement your payroll headache would now be over verification certainly the information is verified and balanced against your control totals until our totals tally with yours the payroll will not be run you retain ultimate control confidential machines don't talk in fact because of restricted access to the data your payroll is handled with more privacy than is possible when you handle it yourself comparison where normally in an employer's office a dozen people might handle payroll data with payroll service it would be handled by only one [Music] advantages time the computer can handle a given employee's earnings record in less than a second money if on intelligence for instance should you bid on a given contract or not of course that's a decision only you can make but only if you get the necessary facts to make it with and get them fast this can lead to more profitable management information is what we have to offer you who can use it any employer with 50 or more employees can save himself money by using this service any business of any description if you have your headquarters in california but have employees in other states payroll service can handle the problem if the payrolls are processed at branch locations all the advantages their own computers but to to basically use was it bank of america we think or were they using bank of america as a as an example i think it was it was actually bank of america but um really beautiful footage and of course the regrettable uh calling a room full of women employees girls that seems to be part of the um the deal from that time period why women employees were called girls i don't really know i mean it's one of the ideas could be that initially uh when women were in the workforce they were in the workforce until they got married and raised a family so they were girls and they probably were young young girls but really there's no reason for it obviously um okay so this next film is uh is a promotional film for the moose lodge um and talks about their the great civic works you know they were a fraternal organization um you know probably not as popular as the masons or the elks or the rotarians or all the other uh uh fraternal social organizations but um yeah so this is kind of talking about how great they are uh unfortunately they use as one of their fundraiser galas a scenes from a minstrel show that they did which is very dated and very uh telling of who that make that made up the membership of the moose lodge which meant that there probably were not african-americans people of color in the lodge so here's yours fraternally [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] these are scenes which the idea of a paternal organization brings to the mind of the average man and woman they are in fact accurate scenes for these are activities in which the members of most fraternal organizations engage they are the ones which most frequently come to the attention of the general public there are large meetings of course but there are also dances singing card parties and family dinners [Music] there are recreational activities too many large homes have facilities for the less strenuous sports such as bowling ping pong and shuffleboard and of course there's the traditional family picnic with youngsters having the time of their lives and of these happy affairs youngsters aren't measured by age either among the organizations which might be described by these scenes is the loyal order of moose often called the family fraternity because of moose emphasis on family activities the back of the fun and play rooted deeply in spiritual and humanitarian values are the three great foundation stones upon which the loyal order of moose has been built to a strength of well over a million men and women in north america [Music] the first of these great cornerstones is mooseheart illinois the world famed child city located just 35 miles west of chicago representing one of the truly great humanitarian enterprises of our time mooseheart is the home and school for dependent children of deceased members here in this beautiful community more than 5 000 orphaned children have been sheltered trained and educated since it was founded in 1913 comprising more than 1100 acres of fertile land in the fox river valley the child city is a completely self-contained community the heart of which is a unique baby village accommodating these youngsters in this city of children family life is the principal aim children live in fine modern homes very much like those in any well-kept community each home has its own kitchen and its own dining room beginning with this well-equipped and stimulating nursery mooseheart fills the academic needs of its youngsters with a complete educational system ranging up through kindergarten elementary school junior and senior high the fully accredited high school is located in this building which was completed just a few years ago academic training is thorough and intensive completely equipped and thoroughly modern somewhat less eagerness inevitably the boys in anticipation of becoming responsible citizens lean towards civics and politics here through their own parties the stars and the stripes they elect their own leaders thus learning the fundamentals of the democratic process [Music] of course it's not all work and study [Music] yes there's time for parties just playing around learning how to dance spectacles and exhibitions and a complete program of bodybuilding sports activities [Music] [Applause] to maintain physical well-being mooseheart's preventive medicine program is one of the finest in permitted by his physical ability thus through his monthly paycheck each resident becomes entitled to the pride and satisfaction of having helped to provide for himself but work is only an incidental part of life at the city of contentment mostly it's a matter of relaxation and recreation every effort is bent toward comfortable satisfying living there are the usual town meetings which give the moosehaven old-timers a strong sense of participation in the shaping of their own destinies the st john's river is an irresistible lure for fishing and basking in the sunshine for the more athletically inclined there is a spirited section of shuffleboard and in remembrance of their youthful days there's the habit of a lifetime of going on a picnic [Music] there's travel too they might be off on an outing to visit a nearby point of historical interest or maybe off to see friends or go shopping the mailman a welcome the rival of any time of life becomes even more important to the old-timers these folks are remembered by the men and women of the moose back home here in the warm southland the loyal order of moose gives living testimony to the strength and substance of its second great cornerstone moosehaven the city of contentment thou shalt devote thyself in service to thy fellow men [Music] this is a ritualistic teaching of the moose in translating these words into action they have established community service as the third great cornerstone upon which they operate whether it's contributing of the sweat of their brows to clear the land for a ball field or a park or a playground or whether it's staging a minstrel show to raise the money to buy the land in the first place a moose lodge is a powerful force for the good of every community perhaps it's the moose who contribute their time and energy in working at the fundraising booth down the street or maybe the energetic women of the moose are holding a bake sale or contributing their talents with needle and thread in order to children someone else's children might have an opportunity for a better life perhaps it's an appeal to motorists to guard our precious children or supporting the schoolboy patrol or training youngsters to protect themselves from the hazards of our streets and highways check the cars pulling up before your church some sunday morning especially easter morning and you'll probably see this sticker another moose devoting himself in service to his fellow men check your sports pages and you'll probably see how this scrappy team made out and when there's an emergency a matter of life and death often times the moose are there by their good works offering living and dramatic demonstration of their devotion to their neighbors in their community scouting receives strong support from this great fraternal organization halloween becomes youth honor day in a plan to curb halloween vandalism and imbue youngsters with a sense of citizenship responsibility inaugurated by the moose many years ago youth honor day is now officially recognized in many states [Music] at christmas time the lodges band together in a nationwide effort to provide a toyful christmas for every needy child these activities and the sponsorship of youth groups such as these fine youngsters are evidences of the community service objective of this order to make every community a better community particularly in which to raise children these then are the foundation stones of the moose that which lies back of the fun of its social and recreation activities providing the home care training and education for dependent orphans relieving those in the twilight of life from troubles worry and care and devoting its members in the interests of their fellow men through community service this is the real substance of the loyal order of moose yours fascinating um so looking up on wikipedia it's always interesting to look at uh you know current information i believe moose heart school is still around and moosehaven is also still around um and the thing is a lot of these fraternal orders are people are aging out because there's certain generations that just don't particularly want to be members of organizations like this um i know this is the case with the elks because i was asked to be an elk at one point i decided it just wasn't worth overhead anyways uh so looking at the wikipedia page for the uh the loyal order of moose um there was a incident in 1913 with uh initiation ritual with two of the candidates and the idea was that they were shown a uh iron like brand that was red hot and then the men were shown the red hot emblem of the order then blindfolded disrobed and then they had a chilled version um of the emblem a rubber version while a magneto was attached to their legs an electric current was applied to them by wire to their shoulder so it was supposed to shock them a little bit the aim was to evidently make them believe that they were being branded both men fainted but as it was thought that they were feigning lodge officers didn't really stop the initiation until it was evident that the two men were dying and the lodge physician was unable to revive them so um fascinating little bits of information there uh that film you know made by wilding wilding made uh quite a few uh instructional films and promotional films uh did a lot of government work during world war ii so you'll see a lot of uh uh training films that were made by wilding um but this one uh was probably either was shown for uh recruitment or mostly shown to uh moose members uh basically to show them what their mon their fundraising efforts and their money was going towards and to kind of congratulate them and slap themselves on the back for saying what good um civ people they are and uh i looked up uh honor day just to see like wow that's i you know rebranding uh halloween as youth honor day um there looks like there's an atlantic article that talks about how halloween was mostly tricks mostly pranks riots property damage and the push to try to make it national youth honor day and how that failed really fascinating i got a short little film from the 80s this is part of a series i've shown before so the beginning sequence is going to look familiar but this is very definitely 1980s calcium it's a nutritional division the makers of infamil and prosobi because we care about what you eat and how you feel [Music] just knowing what foods are good for me for energy there's nothing in the world that i can't try hi there you know having a nice bright smile can make a big difference in the way you look the way you feel having strong bones can too well calcium is what strong bones and teeth are all about if you don't eat enough calcium your bones can get brittle and weak and that's why it's so important that you eat calcium every day just how important is it listen to what people are saying about it [Music] calcium is number one for your teeth as a whole having a baby then don't say maybe cause there's no doubt you gotta shout for calcium it's number one who needs it you need it keep smiling bright keep growing right when you put calcium in your appetite listen to your body say oh yeah oh yeah yeah [Applause] so don't forget it at every meal cause the better you eat the better you feel say it loud say it proud spread the word let it be heard that calcium is number one for your teeth and your skeleton who needs it you need it everybody needs calcium babies and young children whose bones and teeth are developing teenagers who seem to grow up all of a sudden pregnant women especially need calcium because their babies depend on them for all the calcium they need even adults need plenty of calcium otherwise they'll end up all stooped over with brittle bones okay so now the question is how can you add calcium to your diet well there are lots of answers to that question because there's lots of calcium-rich foods good for you yes we are it's true all we wanna do is [Music] cornbread and greens chili with dried beans kale [Music] shake me up [Music] we'll help you grow [Music] so no matter who you are put us in your diet ahead and try it just one bite and you'll see a one two three and we're good for you yes we are it's true all we wanna do is give our galaxy up to you we're the ones oh it's true [Music] oh yeah [Applause] i bet you didn't know there were so many calcium-rich foods most of us only think about dairy products but there are other sources take for instance canned salmon mustard greens blackstrap molasses and almonds how about a bowl of instant hot cereal with milk for breakfast or a beef taco with cheese for lunch doesn't that look good yes there are a lot of choices but remember when it comes to strong bones and teeth there is no choice you need calcium your babies and children need calcium everyone no matter how young or old needs calcium and there are a lot of easy and delicious ways to make sure you get enough every single day [Music] wow i love that series i i only have a i think three in the series um i don't know how many they made i'll have to do some research and see if there's more out there um but it's it's made by baby formula manufacturers who um this is a interesting thing is doing a promotional film this is what's called really a sponsored film so it has educational content but it's sponsored by some company that's has a product that they're selling or concept that they're selling and in this case it's you know shown to uh pregnant women shown in homek shown in family planning classes uh and it's an ad it's right up an ad about uh nutrition and so you you know ideally of course breast milk is best but here you know if you can't do it or if for whatever reason it's inconvenient or you don't believe in it well there's infamel and there's these other uh i remember that that company that made that information and i trust them because they know about nutrition it's just like uh miss puff the toner uh film that basically is talking about zeon uh uh photocopying process zorography and is sells toner and you're like oh well they know what they're talking about so i'll buy toner from them which is much cheaper than buying toner from xerox um anyways it's a very clever advertising and this in this case man those costumes are so great i would love to have pizza slice costume i would love to have a carton of milk costume and of course the kale costume any of those i would wear easily um thanks for joining me today uh thomas thank you for the coffee as always
