anyways welcome to our 16 millimeter um av geeks lunchtime streaming show uh that was uh rapids of the colorado and that's a film that was not in my database so i've never seen that before and i didn't even have it listed in my catalog so this is uh yet another reason why i'm happy to be showing you these films and transferring them as i'm watching them uh because i'm finding stuff that i didn't know that i had um and i'm not going off of any list i'm just literally browsing through hard drives i'm browsing through um my stacks of film that i have at the archive and pulling stuff that i'm like huh i don't think i've seen this and so we got to see a bunch of hippies circa 1970 rolling down the colorado river um having a good old time uh i think i feel like that this is very similar to a lot of the other films that we've shown which are non-narrative films that show a sport or show some sort of physical activity and you know what it entails that's gonna be a very popular thing um i feel like the um the surfboarding film uh that came out the feature film kind of set the tone for that something this summer oh boy need more need more coffee need more coffee um wow and then i put that further and the webcam decided that i needed to be lit better thanks webcam thanks coffee uh all right so anyways we watch old 60 millimeter films uh and i show them to folks like you and uh you guys comment on them and we have a good old time so this next film is about passenger trains enjoy [Music] someone's going away on a trip the traveler is bobby watson he's going out west all by himself to spend his vacation on uncle ray's ranch and while bobby gets all scrubbed and polished cleaned and combed down in the railroad yards his crane is being showered soaked and steamed all at the same time before every trip passenger cars are pulled through an automatic washing machine where they're scrubbed and polished until they shine the big diesel electric locomotives already cleaned and oiled wait to be called for work in another part of the railroad yard fresh linen and towels are put on the train and food for the dining cars where the passengers will eat while they ride the watsons live in a big city just now bobby and his father are coming to the station in a taxi some passengers arrive on foot some in cars and some by bus the station is a busy place many trains come and go in this station the bulletin board shows what time each train should arrive and leave and whether it's on time or late at the baggage counter people may check their bags and suitcases to be carried in a special baggage car mr watson prefers to carry bob suitcase right onto the train there are stores and new stands in the station too bob thinks a magazine may help to pass the many hours on the trip let's go says mr watson the sign tells him where to go passengers pass through this gate to get to their train each passenger shows his ticket to the gateman so that the gateman can be sure that each passenger gets on the right train track number one says the gateman to bobby here's bob's train all put together ready for the passengers in the rear is the observation car as he walks by bob wonders if he can ride in it yes says his father but first we must find your seat on the train the engineer and his helper are climbing aboard the big engine they're all set for the trip here's bob's car the porter takes his baggage mr watson asks the conductor to keep an eye on bob because this is his first train trip alone then he gives bobby his ticket you're on your own now he says the engineer gets the go-ahead signal he opens the throttle [Music] the huge locomotive sets the train in motion slowly at first the signal light is green the road is clear through the railroad yards the train travels slowly [Music] bob's riding in a small room of his own called a roomette it has a comfortable seat in the daytime and can be turned into a bedroom at night a wardrobe is built into the wall of the roomette and a wash basin bob sees a neighbor open the wash basin the tracks gradually lead out of town and join the main line the engineer watches every road sign carefully the safety of the passengers is in his hands traveling in a round is comfortable tickets please bob has two tickets one for the train trip and another one for his place in the round the pullman conductor gets the roomette ticket the train conductor returns half of the round-trip ticket to bob to use when he travels back home again now bob can go and explore the train on his way bob first passes through a chair car many people like to ride and share cars like this one especially for short trips it costs less and is quite comfortable the attendant tells bob that the observation car is three cars farther back on his way bob sees the dome car a car with a roof of glass through the glass dome the passengers can watch the landscape all around them here is the observation car now bob understands why it's at the rear end of the train while the passengers relax and enjoy their trip many people work to keep them safe and comfortable in the train kitchen cooks prepare meals for the 200 passengers now the train's hurrying through farm country at lunchtime the waiter rings chimes to tell the passengers to come to the dining car in a moving train waiters have to learn to keep good balance when serving food many people leave their coach seats to go to the dining car a dining car is like a traveling restaurant here while they eat their meals the passengers can enjoy the moving landscape for passengers who don't want a big meal this train has a lunch car bob has ordered a sandwich for lunch and a glass of milk and while he eats a sandwich the train is approaching a station [Music] it's just a small one but it's important for the train crew because here the engineer and his helper are leaving the train and a new crew takes over this way the train has a rested engineer every few hours say look who's here this is clyde bob has company now the boys can watch the landscape together and they can talk about the things they've seen on the trip so far bob tells clyde about the ranch he's going to visit after a while they decide to go to the observation car where they can play checkers in good company the afternoon passes quickly the boys don't even notice that the sun is gradually setting it's already bedtime for small children this room is larger than bobby's and is called a bedroom already the evening meals are being served while the train speeds into the dusk the porter prepares beds for his passengers the shadows grow longer and the countryside darkens [Applause] guided by signposts and signals which tell the engineer the safe speed in which he may travel the train speeds toward the sunset one by one the lights go out and the passengers go to sleep this is how a passenger goes to rest in a roumet prepared for the night now it's morning again uncle ray's ranch is just across the mountain range but the train won't have to climb over it the tracks are cut into the sides of the mountain and sometimes the train goes through the mountain itself through a tunnel or it rushes across rugged country over bridges and trestles are you ready ask the pullman conductor bob will get off at a small station where the train stops only for a moment but he's all packed and ready come on bobby here we are the porter carries a step for passengers so that they can get off the high cars easily and as he had promised mr watson the pullman conductor sees bobby off the train here's uncle ray shouting hi there cowboy the long ride is over uncle ray's jeep is waiting the train starts off again and off goes bob to the ranch to new adventures with cowboys and horses but the train goes on on across more mountains more valleys across desert country until it reaches its destination [Music] california i love when the colors go to chrome and it's really beautiful and i also like uh when these films show these these travel infrastructures and these things um of a different time it's really kind of glorious big fan um this film is uh about safety on the street and i want to say this from the 60s um late 60s even early 70s [Music] so so [Music] more and more people more and more machines all in a hurry going places signs signals directions and controls all designed to regulate the movement of people and machines to prevent accidents yet it isn't enough each year in the united states about nine thousand people are killed while walking on the streets and highways and many more are seriously injured of this number more than 2500 are children under 14 years of age it's obvious that the signs signals and safeguards are not enough to prevent machines and people from getting in each other's way what's missing how can we find out let's begin by learning something about the drivers point of view this is what the world looks like to an automobile driver he can look to his right or to his left or to the rear with the aid of rearview mirrors every driver is on his way somewhere he usually drives as carefully as he can and habitually relies on signs and signals to tell him when to start stop or slow down he tends to think that other vehicles will be moving along much as he is and that pedestrians will be where they usually are on the sidewalks or in crosswalks if someone appears in an unexpected place it's likely to come as a surprise this street looks safe enough to a driver unless someone unexpected appears from here or here or here the driver saw them but just in time what about the people the driver can't see there could be this many people around a car and the driver wouldn't know it the corner posts of the car would prevent the driver from seeing anyone here or here when he's going forward or here here or here when he's backing up unless he happens to catch a glimpse of one of them in the outside rear view mirror neither will he be able to see this child in a wagon because the child is out of sight if you're in a position where you can't see the driver's eyes you know he can't see you and he can't react to you unless he does see you how soon does a driver need to see you if a girl half a block away does the unexpected on a quiet street with the car moving at 20 miles per hour she'll be able to stop by the time she's here the average driver will be able to stop in about forty seven feet by the time he's here so there won't be an accident however if the girl had been this much closer to the car when she ran out the driver wouldn't have been able to stop in time even at 20 if a similar thing happens on a main street with the car moving at 35 miles per hour there may be an accident the boy will end up here and the car will take 110 to 120 feet to stop depending on how alert the driver is and how good his brakes are what do you think will result if the same sort of thing happens on a highway with the car moving at 50 miles per hour the boy will not be able to stop until he's here the driver 240 feet or more to stop won't be able to avoid hitting the boy the stopping distances we've talked about are what an average driver can do in an average car under ideal conditions but you can't always count on a driver being able to see so well [Music] or stop so well any sort of street under any condition will be as safe as we make it or as dangerous it all depends on our ability to size up a situation and to make a wise decision these children can't afford to be wrong about whether the oncoming car on a wet street will be able to stop here or here so they make a wise decision and wait until the car has passed before they cross the street now let's take a look at some everyday traffic situations see if you can spot a dangerous decision as it is being made and make a safe decision instead what do you see here that seems unsafe is this a good place to stop and talk and is this a safe place to wait for the light to change you're right of course the boys can talk safely as long as they like on the sidewalk and the girls can wait safely on the curb for the light to change what do you see here does the girl have a choice about which side of the car she'll get out of yes she does she'll be wiser not to step out of the car into traffic the curbside is much safer did you see someone pass by let's see that again it's two boys walking toward us along the side of the road the driver can just barely see them if he's watching closely how can we avoid a dangerous situation like this here's how by carrying a flashlight and wearing light-colored clothing and notice something else the boys are walking against traffic where they can see and be seen they'll get where they're going safely here's another case of choices a safe one or a dangerous one the boy is on his way to the sidewalk but has he chosen a safe route if he wants to reach the sidewalk safely he'd better walk down to the crosswalk make sure traffic has stopped at a red light and cross with ease what's dangerous here where should this boy cross the street you're right if you said at the corner in the crosswalk with a green light [Music] earlier we learned that besides signs signals and safeguards something else is needed to prevent accidents now we know that something else is our own ability to make safe decisions next time you're out on foot remember the man behind the wheel does not expect the unexpected a surprise like this could be fatal so when you're faced with a choice size up the situation use your own judgment and make a decision that will get you where you're going safely you know so that was encyclopaedia britannica so it was probably showing scenes of a suburban chicago there i don't know if anybody who's watching is from chicago if they saw any landmarks that they recognize uh this next film uh stinks of vinegar and um it's not really bad but it's a faint scent and that's basically because uh film uh most film uh 16 millimeter is safety stock which is uh printed on acetate which is a clear plastic base and then there's an emulsion on it and so when you see those big green scratches that's basically a scratch in the emulsion if you see faint black scratches then that's usually a scratch in the base but what happens is if the films are not ventilated well um they start kind of off gassing this acetic acid smell which is vinegar uh and so what happens is this is the telltale sign that this film is slowly beginning to uh deteriorate and so what happens is that the film starts to shrink starts to curl becomes more brittle um or gets so bad that it actually becomes what we call a hockey puck where you can't even um you know it's all seized together so you try to peel it and just crackles apart uh so uh there's a lot of films in my collection that are in this this shape they showed up in this shape and or they've just gotten worse over a period of time but um i just wanted to show you something that was on this can use no scotch tape on this film so basically uh this is an attempt by the librarian or the av uh person to say please teachers do not repair this film with scotch tape um even though the you can use tape to uh repair films there's a it's a clear kind of stable tape that doesn't yellow uh and is pretty strong and doesn't become brittle and all that stuff like regular scotch tape might so please do not use scotch tape um all right this next film is about drugs let's focus on some uppers come on come on let's go i'll be right there man okay so [Music] [Music] i guess it's clear what all these people have in common they all take pills a certain type of pill called an amphetamine commonly referred to as speed though it may be any one of several drugs such as benzedrine dexadrine or methadrain this athlete's coach warned the team that anyone using uppers would be suspended from athletic competition and that winning a race is something you do not something done for you by a drug besides your muscles are capable of moving you just so fast and if they're pressed to do more well she didn't get much sleep the night before i wonder whether she thinks taking those pills was such a good idea now [Music] there are many teenagers who take speed just for the kick the high again hey hey i'll take some too [Music] unfortunately for many this high feeling turns into aggressiveness the slightest annoyance you stupid idiot can't you keep it in a cup all these people made the same mistake the mistake of taking a pill that wasn't prescribed by a doctor now of course all pills that you take don't have to be prescribed by a doctor there are pills you can take to stop the pain of a headache there are pills you can take without a doctor's prescription to help you sleep and of course there are the caffeine pills if you want to stay awake but that's not all the pills there are not by a long shot there are also pills to make you feel up and pills to bring you down pills to make your heart beat faster and pills to make it beat slower pills to help you lose weight and pills to help you gain weight all of these pills however must be taken only on a doctor's advice and supervision a doctor who is concerned with your weight your blood pressure your complete medical history emotional condition and how well you handle the strains of school parents and friends this man is an expert this year he's had to work very hard to know what he knows you wouldn't fly in an airplane without an expert an experienced pilot you would only trust your car your life to an experienced mechanic and you'd only go to a qualified dentist to have your teeth worked on are you going to trust your body to him do you think he's qualified well let's talk with someone who is qualified someone who's been working with amphetamines all his professional life as a physician at the los angeles free clinic i'm only too aware of the growing number of pill taking teenagers through my talks with a great number of them i've discovered some basic patterns of amphetamine abuse which i fear we all should become aware of usually the speed user complains that he's tired all the time that he can't seem to get into things unless he takes some more pills until he's no longer taking the upper for the high feeling he once got but just to be able to feel normal like his friends [Music] because the body quickly gets used to the effects of amphetamines the user has difficulty getting up in the morning and must take more and more of the drug because without it the user doesn't have the energy to get up and in this case enough energy to get to school on time or get there at all you really don't know what to get you know another common complaint of the amphetamine user is the almost complete lack of desire for food many users go for days weeks even months consuming a fraction of their normal food requirements [Music] he died or something this is because amphetamines kill your appetites they work in the body to block the physical sensation of being hungry that's why they're prescribed by qualified physicians for patients with overweight problems but if they're taken in dosages and amounts not recommended by a physician the user often neglects to eat when he must leaving his body in a severely run-down condition the body also needs a certain amount of sleep even if it's just to sit in class or walk home from school your body must rest at night the problem is that amphetamines act as stimulants to the central nervous system the brain and if you have to take more and more of them just to function you'll be keeping yourself and getting the sleep which your body must have another very important factor and one which must be considered by anyone planning to take or taking amphetamines is that there is enough scientific evidence at the current time to show that amphetamines when taken in large doses causes death of brain cells brain cells do not regenerate they do not grow back this is why amphetamine should only be prescribed by a physician for he is the only expert who can tell you the proper dosage and amounts to take this medication i personally never give any of my patients amphetamines well it turns out that dr citron bomb was right in not prescribing amphetamines to its patients because very soon after saying that a seven-man team of doctors at the los angeles county university of southern california medical center announced proof of the severe and deadly damage to the vital organs of the body through the excessive use of amphetamine drugs recently we have found that patients who use methamphetamine or speed can get changes in their blood vessels the changes in the blood vessels can lead to serious disease or death what happens to these people they can get blind they can have vomiting of blood or they can have kidney failure also many of these patients will develop muscle aches and pains and the pain in the muscles will be so severe that they can either walk nor sit comfortably diseases of blood vessels are quite difficult to diagnose however dr mort halpern colleague of mine has found a way to do this quite simply these young patients were sent to me for study when the usual means of diagnosis did not determine precisely what was wrong with them i use a technique of studying the blood vessels inside the organs of a living patient let me show you what i mean this is a kidney a normal kidney with a normal blood vessel into the kidney and you see smooth vessels that branch in a very orderly fashion throughout the kidney it's like a healthy tree here is the kidney of a young boy who died after taking speed for two years and there are many areas where he no longer has a blood supply and these areas of the kidney have died the vessels that are left behind are very irregular and they have many little blisters on them i can show you this even better in this liver of a young woman who died of her drug abuse and here you see large blisters on many of the vessels and many areas in the liver where there is no blood supply at all in summary really the important thing is that we now know through the research that methamphetamine does cause an organic disease of the body which can kill kind of makes you wonder what all the other research about drugs will show we can't ever forget how recently drug abuse has become a problem and considering how little time we've had to do drug research who knows how much damage people have done to their bodies in the past few years now we know how much amphetamines or uppers can affect the body but there's more to the case against amphetamine abuse than just the effect on the body let's see how amphetamines affect our personality our mental and emotional life cinderella dressed in him went upstairs to kiss the fella by the stakes i'll break your neck of the billions of amphetamine pills manufactured legally in the united states it is estimated that at least one half of them end up being sold by the illegal pusher more and more these pills are finding their way into the hands of younger and younger people what makes these teenagers take uppers is there something special something different about people who take uppers this girl takes speed because she has problems with their parents he takes uppers because his schoolwork is bad and the high helps him forget about his poor grades she takes amphetamines because her boyfriend broke up with her for being moody now she just wants to forget about it but she is moody and knows it but doesn't know what to do about it he takes uppers because he's bored doesn't know what to do with himself speed helps him enjoy doing nothing he takes the pills just to belong he is afraid to say no because he wants to be part of what other people are doing no matter what it is and maybe she takes pills for all of these reasons or maybe none of them or maybe just to get high for many youngsters it can really be as simple as that well everyone has problems and there are as many reasons teenagers take pills as there are problems however will dropping pills solve the problems she has with her parents will dropping pills get him better test marks will dropping pills help her to deal with the problems that cause her moodiness if his friends won't associate with him unless he drops pills are they really friends will dropping uppers help him discover himself and the things around him so he can enjoy life as it is does she know that it will take more and more amphetamine pills to get high until it does her harm physically as well as psychologically and is she really solving her problems or is she running away from them well that's it you have to decide for yourself if you agree with dr spiegel that the only way to solve your problems is to deal with them and you'll also agree that copping out on drugs won't solve them if you agree with dr citron bomb dr halperin and dr citron that athena means are a dangerous drug you'll also agree that they're dangerous for you if you agree with me that we owe it to ourselves to learn how to prepare ourselves to make this a better world for all of us and you'll also agree that taking drugs only interferes with that plan you may also want to think of this taking drugs affects not only ourselves not only the people we love and the people who love us but the rest of us all of us [Music] ah [Music] i love it that was so great um so there's a doctor there's this a citron and a citron bomb it's crazy um so that's a very formulaic uh early 70s late 60s drug film you've got some hit host whether it's greg morris whether it's sonny bono whether it's salminio and then you have them talking about the drugs and you talk it you have them then these inner cuts of scientists and doctors talking about the negative health benefits uh or the negative health uh factors of using the drug then you talk to teens and you examine why are they using the drug and does the drug really help the problem that they're trying to fix with the drug um yeah so you know just fill in the name amphetamines barbiturates lsd marijuana um heroin is a little bit different for obvious reasons um cocaine i don't know i i see more films about cocaine like in the late 70s and early 80s um but uh yeah it's very formulaic uh all right um let's uh let's learn about how to improve america's health at her family home in the winter of 1900 jenny fisher was born in terms of health her first year would be the most dangerous nearly one out of every six infants born in 1900 would not live through its first year of life for an infant entering the world of 1900 less than 50 years of life on the average could be expected childhood diseases often resulted in death in 1900 more than 30 000 people died of diphtheria nearly 10 000 died of measles whooping cough was the cause of more than 9 thousand deaths in nineteen hundred tuberculosis was the greatest single danger to health of every hundred people eleven could expect to die of tuberculosis pneumonia and influenza together would take slightly more lives heart diseases would kill nearly eight of each hundred people and cancer half as many and so as far as health was concerned this was the world jenny fisher was born into in 1900 nearly two-thirds of a century later jenny fisher's granddaughter has come into a different world while jenny fisher at birth had a life expectancy of only 50 years which she has now passed by more than a decade her granddaughter's life expectancy is more than 70 years this infant has better than five times the chance of surviving her first year than jenny did the children of today are being born into a healthier america than ever existed before america's health has been improved for a number of reasons the control of communicable diseases especially in children has been a major health goal in america today children can be protected against most of the serious diseases of childhood by means of inoculations administered widely through private and public agencies while the control of childhood diseases is one aspect of our improving national health the control of diseases in adults especially tuberculosis is also of great importance free programs of chest x-rays are helping to detect cases of tuberculosis in the early stages in this and other ways diseases are being conquered by our local state and federal health agencies tuberculosis from which 11 out of every hundred people in nineteen hundred could expect to die today causes the death of less than one person in a hundred pneumonia and influenza which caused the death of twelve people out of a hundred today caused the death of only three people in a hundred different killed thirty thousand people in nineteen hundred today it takes less than one hundred lives each year and the number is constantly being decreased despite the fact that our population has more than doubled since 1900 deaths from measles and whooping cough have been virtually eliminated another major factor in the improvement in america's health is sanitation sanitation is carried on in many ways rats and flies once spread deadly epidemics but regular garbage removal is eliminating this danger swamps and stagnant waters are breeding places for mosquitoes that carry yellow fever and malaria these places are being drained or chemically treated to kill mosquito larvae another area of sanitation is the providing of pure water for use in a community purification of water for community use has helped to wipe out typhoid fever almost completely in 1900 typhoid fever took more than 20 000 lives today it has been virtually eliminated as a cause of death in the united states regular programs of scientific testing inspection and regulation on local state and national levels are contributing to the steady improvement of america's health diseases once spread through milk are now under control because of cleanliness requirements and regular inspection of cows and milking equipment dairy plants and equipment are also rigidly inspected to make certain that the milk delivered to the consumer will not spread disease meat is carefully inspected too before it reaches the consumer federal government inspectors place their approval stamp only on meat that fulfills their strict requirements food preparation in general is covered by united states government regulations that help guarantee the purity of food places where food is served also are subject to health regulations in these eating places it is important that glassware dishes and other tableware be washed properly to destroy microorganisms that might cause disease tests that are regularly made determine how effectively washing is being done diseases that can be spread by improperly cooked meat are controlled by requiring minimum temperatures at which certain meats must be prepared cleanliness standards are required for employees of restaurants too not only are americans being protected by the health standards that control the food they eat but they are also being protected by the regulations that affect the places where they live for many communities require certain minimum housing standards housing that is substandard is being torn down and new healthful structures are being erected because of such regulation of public and private housing the health of americans is being benefited local hospitals and other health facilities are also subject to regular inspections to be certain they meet rigid health requirements many communities provide clinics where free or low-cost medical care is available doctors well-educated in medical schools are permitted to practice only if they have passed a rigid examination given by the state the licensing of doctors is strictly controlled and helps guarantee that the people we depend on are well qualified to protect our health whenever the health of americans is at stake licensing helps guarantee good care under sanitary conditions whether the people are elderly patients in a hospital or convalescent home or pre-school children in a day nursery because today the health of all members of a community is guarded on many levels newborn infants come into a healthier world than the world jenny fisher entered in nineteen hundred today we understand more about the health problems we face this knowledge has come through a vast program of education undertaken by our communities our states and our nation true some diseases have been conquered but there are new health problems cancer for example in the year 1900 out of every 100 people four could expect to die of cancer today cancer will claim about four times as many lives out of every hundred people in nineteen hundred eight could expect to die of heart diseases today heart diseases are responsible for about five times as many deaths scientists are at work trying to find means of preventing these diseases but more trained scientists are needed to continue this important work this is a serious national problem another growing problem lies in the increasing numbers of elderly people in our country this is one result of the improvements in america's health ways must be found of keeping these elderly people useful happy and healthful citizens mental illness is getting more attention too new methods of treating people with illnesses of the mind are being developed but there are not enough hospitals and clinics in america for the mentally ill more new hospitals are also needed for our growing population to help maintain and improve our high level of health great medical centers are growing part of our nation's continued drive for good health there has been great improvement in america's health since the turn of the 20th century [Music] america's continuing goal is better health for all its citizens um i'm not gonna soapbox here but uh you know what i would say i'm just saying um we worked so hard we worked so hard to improve our nation's health worked so hard anyways uh so thanks so much everybody for tuning in today it means a likewise you can buy us coffee um any geeks uh live off of caffeine and coffee is a wonderful thing um it's not quite a metamphetamine but it's it's definitely doing the same types of things with the brain um i don't think i could do speed i'd probably have a heart attack or i'd be so jittery that wouldn't be able to get anything done um and then go to avgeeks.com if you like what you saw and you
