[Music] [Music] now the story here is about a gala look great but you got it in her head that she ought to lose weight then she felt guilty about the stuff she ate bad diet you name it she'd try it [Music] now her little brother alex just wanted to be tall so one day he could play basketball bad moves and it can sold himself with junk food now alex thought derek was strong and cool and he came for some poaching every day after school thought he tried hold it hold it and it kept it quiet and then one day karen spotted derrick and went out of her door instantly she was overboard what did i tell you is he cute or what he's cute look out he's turning deaf karen is that your brother alex down there alex it is alex what's he doing with derek how does he even know him come on i think we're out of here hold your legs stiff my legs feel like wet noodles hold it hold it up i feel like a geek come on champ you can't quit now you wear the long face i don't know everybody's bigger than me he's stronger than me i know the feeling they used to call me shrimp they did i thought i'd never grow you want an apple no thanks hey donut no thanks so you say you want a good-looking body right doesn't everybody look there are two things you can do exercise and food food and that stuff you know how they make donuts ow they take dough made from flour fry it in boiling fat you cover it with sugar so you know what you're feeding your body uh can i try to think what's in the food uh flour sugar and fat you got it so what else did you eat today uh i wasn't watching alex i don't think you're serious about this okay okay just try me i want you to do something all right i want you to write down everything you eat all day every day everything all day everything all week okay okay anyway even if i do lose weight how am i gonna meet him karen you do not need to lose weight okay but then how am i gonna meet him there's one way you can meet derek my twirpy little brother face it karen alex can introduce you yeah my darling little brother ally hamburger hamburger fries fries and one small bag of cheese doodles and one small bag of cheese doodles anything else that's everything i ate but what's the point well if we add it all up we can get a picture of what you're feeding your body okay you're getting plenty of protein most people do [Music] what's that all about you're running low on vitamins minerals and fiber i am how come well there's your problem a lot of your food is sugar and fat does that matter alex you want a body that looks unhealthy or one that's well fit okay okay so what do i do think about it you know how they make sugar how they take a plant like corn or sugar beets take everything out except the sugar what's left is a lot of calories with no other nutrients for your body and that's raw that fat well but where did i eat so much fat you know what you're eating right now there's fat and potato chips think about how they make them they cut up potatoes and fry them in boiling fat feel the grease yeah okay but where else did i eat fat any food that comes from animals is likely to have fat animal fat right saturated fat the worst kind as a milk milk has fat remember where butter comes from oh yeah butter's the fat they take out of milk so if you drink whole milk you're also drinking fat butter fat so drink low fat milk it's great food yeah but what else am i supposed to eat go for more complex carbohydrates i forget what they are look there's a lot of great foods that come from plants they're low in fat and high in nutrients the potatoes you love delicious foods made from grains like spaghetti rice cereal bread you can eat beans fruits vegetables vegetables i have a definite feeling i'm not gonna like this [Music] okay i'm not gonna eat you because i know that you're fattening i haven't eaten all day besides there's no one here to see is that your new diet alex if you ever do i mean alex what are you doing here i live here i mean i really am glad to see you alex are you feeling okay what's all that celery derek said the vegetables listen alex by the way derek said ice cream is loaded with that frozen yogurt has less listen alex that's what i wanted to talk to you about butterfat no derek i was thinking since you seemed to know him and hey wait a minute i'm not a dating service alex you can use my stereo i can and you can have the bathroom first thing in the morning well i gotta think about it okay okay so what do you want you can invite me to your party you add my party over my dead body oh well you didn't care that much about derek anyway just cause he's a neat guy kind smart great looking okay okay you can come great and i'll do my gymnastics act at my party deal so when do i meet derek he works at a fast food restaurant yeah he's assistant to the manager there he is alex what are you doing here listen derek i gotta talk to you about these vegetables oh yeah this is my sister karen hi karen i heard you were into computers and nutrition and stuff i'm into that too computers or nutrition uh both actually listen derek could we talk sure i got a few more things to do come on inside what's this stuff it's hot fat the stuff we use to fry french fries are you trying it out no way we sell this stuff they use it to make soap you mean the grease on my french fries the stuff they make soap out of this is what it looks like before we heat it up in the fryer solid fat yeah some places use animal fat for saturated fat what's so bad about saturated fat see this funnel now imagine this was your artery it's all stopped up yeah if you eat too much animal fat and cholesterol which usually comes with it fatty deposits form on the walls of your arteries now if this was blood trying to get to your heart the otter is closed yeah that's a heart attack uncle david had a heart attack he almost died yeah well a lot of kids have arteries already starting to clog i relax chief it's easy to lower the risk just eat less saturated fat and let's cholesterol you got a smart sister alex alex can you open that door for me hey this is me you serve steaks here no i suppose i took this and i grilled it for you would you eat this part you mean the fat of course not you cut it off right every ceiling make hamburgers why do they need the fat in well you like them juicy don't you see that's what hamburger is about two-thirds of the calories come from fat so i can't eat hamburger well sure you can once in a while if the rest of your foods are right that's the problem i can't handle this rabbit food alex i hate vegetables alex you know what this is ah hot potato it's mainly carbohydrate it's also a vegetable if you eat it this way you get vitamins minerals fiber eat a potato like this you add a lot of calories fat and salt too much salt can also cause problems but i like french fries hey that's cool you can have treats just hang on to some balance suppose you order a big double cheeseburger and fries guess how much fat you're eating um 18 teaspoons of fat now how could we lower the fat uh make it a single burger that helps can you spread the cheese lower the butter fat hold the dressing too is chicken less fatty sure if you leave the skin off instead of french fries eat a baked potato great add some trimmings make the bun whole wheat pull out the refined sugar and you got a meal with only two teaspoons of fat big difference when you make better choices see alex the salad bar is definitely a good choice imagine a meal with vegetables beans fruit lots of carbohydrates caramel carbohydrates yeah see these foods look great use a low-fat dressing and you got a lot of nutrients and fiber with hardly any fat low calories too so fight i mean if your personal carbohydrates then it would be in place of all the sugary and fatty foods so then i wouldn't i mean that person wouldn't have to diet well she eat a lot less calories that's for sure well not that you'd ever have to worry about that derek i was wondering um i'm filming a little party and i was wondering i'd love to you in sure i guess we're both interested in the same things it's a lot of girls all they think about is trying to be skinny i know i hate that too you can't believe how many girls are always on some stupid new diet talk about boring that's exactly how i feel [Music] are you okay fine i just find something's a little hard to swallow i think we're gonna have a mob i know it's gonna be great so who else is coming well derek johnny curve greg tina what are we gonna do for food yeah how about dip and chips chips fried in fat oh yeah well we could have fried yeah and buckets of greasy and fat how about with pepperoni too fatty how about mushrooms and other veggies instead of my usual breakfast i could have [Music] instead of my usual lunch i could have [Music] but what do we do for dessert at the party everything's full of fat and sugar okay i got it picture this [Music] okay come on people i have a little special entertainment for you tonight to amaze you with their feet of gasoline feet with their dazzling beats of courage the incredible daredevil now alex could have stood on his head but he had a great time breaking up instead [Music] too cool so it took a while but they got it together and they finally figured out just when and whether fast food can be too crude if you want the body of a real cool cat eat up on the sugar and the fat no need to diet to keep her natural weight in place of junk the right carbohydrates [Music] a fine healthy body do you need it the question is what do you feed it hello everybody welcome to the 80 geeks lunchtime streaming show i'm skip alzheimer and that was made in 1988. i was already in college and spending too much time in college um and so it's kind of weird like there's a i think there's a line that's drawn in my in my head in some other collector's heads like i was talking with rick perlinger and rick has no patience for educational films that were made after the time that he was in school and i kind of feel that same way it's harder for me so that that weird fake rap and the all the fashions and uh all that stuff in that in this last film it kind of grates on me a little bit because it's it's really like an episode of say by the bell but with a weird nutritional slant to it and so but i know that some of you and some of my fans are you know they love this because this is when they grew up and they were in school so um but i'm happy i got it because uh yes it is definitely of a time i did a show called those excruciating 80 1980s and this would definitely fit in there so well um if i do a reboot of it um so i watch old 60 millimeter films sometimes we watch them live via you can see this is the telecini so this is actually being transferred live via a german sixty thousand dollar uh transfer machine that i have eventually paid off so um and some of the things that we watch are things that i've already digitized in the past so here's an example of something where judy learns about milk here we go judy right it comes from cows and today julie and her mother are going to visit uncle george's farm to see just how we get the milk from the cows uncle george's farm is out in the country where there's plenty of sweet green grass for the cows to eat [Music] there they are grazing in the meadow brown cows black cows white cows spotted cows all kinds of cows and they're always eating eating and drinking all the time this is very important because the more grass they eat and the more water they drink the more milk they'll give [Music] to make sure that they drink enough water uncle george puts a large block of salt in the field where the cows can lick it with their long rough tongue cows love to eat salt the salt makes them thirsty and then they drink gallons and gallons of water judy seems to be excited about something i wonder what she sees why it's a little cat a baby cow only one day old drinking milk from her mother she's filled hand up by herself so the farmer holds her while she's feeding a baby calf is too young to eat grass she can only drink milk and the milk comes from a cow's udder that round white sack under her stomach that's where we get our milk too as you'll see a little later [Music] here is a big white vine where the cows are milked that tall round tower attached to the side of the barn is called a silo the silo is used for storing corn to feed the cows in the winter when the ground is covered with snow [Music] the farmer grows his own corn and when it's ripe he picks it and stores it in the silo the silo holds enough corn to feed all the cows in the winter inside the barn are the stalls where the cows are kept when they're being milked each stall has a soft bed of straws and in front of the stall is a feed trough where the farmer puts hay for the cows to eat while they're in the barn [Music] the hay grows in a large open field and here we see uncle george cutting the hay with his mowing machine which is something like a big lawnmower pulled by a team of mules the name of the mules are katie and bob and they're very patient and work very hard after the hay is cut katie and bob are hitched to the hay race which piles the hay in long bundles in the field [Music] a pitchfork helps too [Music] this is the hay loader it picks up the hay in its iron fingers and jumps it on the wagon [Music] when the wagon is full uncle george drives it to one end of the field where the hay is piled in large [Music] haystacks here come the cows it's milking time and all by themselves they start walking toward the barn the cows know when it's time to be milked and twice a day once in the early morning and once in the afternoon they go to the barn to be milked [Music] each cow has her own stall and she walks into the same stall every day as soon as she is inside the yolk must be closed the oak is an iron frame that fits around the cow's neck to keep her from walking away but it doesn't keep her from eating yes even inside the bride the cows eat and drink all the time each cow has their own drinking fountain [Music] well what's this why it's buster the cat busters saw this empty stall and decided to take a nap doesn't he look comfortable [Music] everything in the barn must be kept very clean so that no germs can get into the milk water sprays the cows to keep the flies away because flies carry germs and germs cause disease while walter does the spraying uncle george carefully washes the cow's udder now everything is ready uncle george places a shiny clean milk tail between his knees and begins the milking he squeezes first one teeth and then another the other has four teeth from which the milk is drawn each cow gives about 15 quarts of milk a day when all the cows are milked they'll be turned out into the pasture again [Music] so would you like to milk a cow judy you will have to wash your hands first remember everything must be very very clean when we milk cows judy is going to milk good old floral is a gentle black and white cow who doesn't mind having a little girl milker [Music] judy thinks this is great fun soon the milk pail is full now it must be taken to the milk room [Music] here the milk is poured through a cloth strainer into a large can it takes several pails of milk [Music] as soon as the can is full it is placed in the cooler the milk must be kept cool to keep it from turning sour early the next morning long after judy and her mother have gone home uncle george takes the cans of milk from the cooler and puts them on his truck when the truck is loaded he'll drive to the bottling plant where the milk is pasteurized and put into bottles and soon afterwards our old friend the milkman delivers the bottles of cool fresh milk on the front doorstep [Music] now whenever judy drinks milk she remembers flora belle the black and white cow that she milked all by herself at uncle george's farm oh judy um so uncle uncle george uh it's funny like how many uh of these films around this time period 40s 50s 60s it's always the kids go to an uncle's farm uh traditionally it's uncle jim uh there i have three different films uh about uncle jim uh one from the late 40s one from the 50s well right ones from the 50s one's from the 60s and one is um like 1980 and features a very a young john cusack kind of a chubby john cusack actually at some point i might bring that and show that um but no this one was uh uncle george different guy uh i just wanted to say thank you so much for coffee um been getting people who've been watching the show later uh not live and they've been contributing coffee and that's very much appreciated so thank you so much for that um that is a currency caffeine is a currency that i very much enjoy so thank you for that because that gets me motivated to use this equipment and to come up with these cockamamie ideas and share them with you um so uh this next film takes us this was made roughly 1980 1981 uh takes us to hong kong so this is children of hong kong [Music] my name is yin kik my family are both people of aberdeen and hong kong [Music] we have lived in houseboats for generations soon though the government plans to move us all to resettlement blocks on land i hurried home from school today so i could go out with my grandmother my grandmother has been wrong sand pans for her life she lets me help her though when we're in the main channel we are going to clear fish traps by the restaurant is a good place to set traps lots of little fish come to eat the food scraps the cooks throw out grandma empties a fish into a water tank to keep them alive the people who buy them will store them underwater too [Music] it's nearly dinner time we're glad when we sell the last fish my father's a sailor he sell all around the world now he works on a harbor ferry and doesn't have to leave home i think grown-ups love to play mahjong my parents and grandparents play nearly every night be tired for school [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] [Music] tomorrow is a sports day for our school my friends and i practice for the events in the playground on the school roof i'm in the beanbag strong and 100 meter race my girlfriend wong wing son counts for us when some lives on land and a tower block [Applause] my parents are trying to get a flat in this block or when we have to move out of our house boat wong wing some says you get used to the stairs and there are more children to play with i hope we get a flat as nice as the one she lives in [Music] after we finish our school project i go home and then it's time to pick up lam y yung from kindergarten he loves walking through the market there's so much to see [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so they're the lanterns for the moon festival i wish we could buy one language young seen a lovely one that would look beautiful when it's lit up but it's expensive too [Music] perhaps grandad will give me some money sometimes he pays me when i work with him on the fish traps maybe i should go and ask granddad perhaps you'll give me my pocket money early for working with him on the fish trips okay i just hope the man hasn't sold it before i get there sometimes the sandpan seems very slow when you're in a hurry everyone's hanging out lanterns tonight it's an autumn festival it's late by the time i get back language fast asleep open guard you are here never mind you'll enjoy it in the morning [Music] [Applause] the sport ground is the biggest open space i've ever walked on and today is our school's turn to use it [Music] i'd carry the banner because i'm the captain of our team blue house [Applause] hey [Applause] i can hear all of blue house cheering the judges say it's a dead heat and we both from blue house i feel proud and shy at the same time when the judge puts our medals on [Applause] i must hurry and tell my father maybe if you let me go for a ride with them on the ferry [Music] he doesn't say much but i think he's quite proud too this is a special treat when my father lets me work the pump one day this will just be a fishing port if i have a son like me who highly believe we used to live on a houseboat and sail out to the big restaurant in a ferry that's pretty great um looks like it was either british or australian made um at the end gibson um but anyways visually just really fascinating um and unintentionally uh you know these films at the time they were made to show us a culture introduce us as school kids to different cultures and how kids lived in different cultures but uh unintentionally we look back at these films and they actually tell a story of how things were um and and give us a sense of how things have changed uh maybe even radically changed especially when you have uh hong kong being taken over by china and uh china might not be wanting to tell the story of hong kong and so this history might be lost very similar thing happens i mean this not that i'm comparing china to disney but disney is uh incredibly revisionist with their history and so holding on to old disney media especially films is um important and i um i haven't looked on disney plus to see i know they don't have song in the south on there um but i didn't check to see if they had a white wilderness uh which is something they won an academy award for um and it's a nature film true life nature film um which shows uh lemmings committing suicide and it was later revealed that those lemons were actually pushed off a cliff um so it's called the disney snuff film so i didn't see if that's actually on there but it is interesting to think about that you know having this physical media disney can't go out and change it and edit it and tweak it for however they want to deal with it now um and now that disney owns abc and fox there's that same possible thing that can happen is that they're always going to be revising and changing uh lucasfilms well already george lucas was futzing with his his past things so um you know having those original uh copies of you know the 70s releases when they came out is pretty important because they just not available anymore uh disney said i think that they were going to re-release some of the originals but i'm not sure i don't know disney has a lot to uh excuse me to invest in in making money off of that and making everything fit the cannon so there's my little soap boxy thing i'm talking about um let's uh what do i want to do uh this is a great film unfortunately the title is clipped it's uh science and superstition and uh it's a wonderful film that kind of talks about uh the difference between science and superstition it teaches kids a little bit about the scientific method it's a wonderful film that i think should be shown to everybody um all right no more soapboxing here we go he says the catcher but alan seems to believe the rabbit's foot will bring him good luck while george the catcher thinks it's just a superstition well we'll soon see strike three you're out it looks like the rabbit's foot didn't help much time anyway but even the end of the playground period didn't end the argument between george and allen they took the rabbit's foot up again with miss carr their teacher george says i told him it was no good a rabbit's foot is just a silly old superstition but alan wouldn't give up it is not it's a fact says alan this sort of thing could have gone on forever if miss carr hadn't decided to discuss this matter of superstitions and facts with the whole class what is the superstition anyway and what is a fact are all superstitions true or are just some of them true are any superstitions really true and what about facts this car decided to start with the rabbit's foot idea now george tells me he thinks this is a superstition now who thinks he can tell me a fact or something he believes is a fact yes alan well last week when we talked about glass he said it was a non-conductor of the electricity i think that said isn't it we did talk about that and we can add that to our list now who else can give me another statement something he calls a superstition yes marion well there's a superstition about the groundhog if he sees a shadow when he comes out in the spring there'll be six weeks more of cold weather yes that is a fairly common saying now we have two more statements to write nascar had no trouble getting a lot of statements to add to her list and by the next morning she had arranged the statements in a chart on the blackboard the class had mentioned eight items in all and from these they had chosen six statements for class discussion first there was the original rabbit's foot idea a rabbit's foot brings good luck next was an example of a fact glass is a non-conductor of electricity then if the groundhog sees his shadow on the second of february there will be six more weeks of cold weather this car asked george to hand out individual record sheets so everyone could study all the statements very thoughtfully somebody had suggested the statement a pint of milk weighs more than a pint of cream then there was the idea that hot water will freeze quicker than cold water and last on the list was water expands when it freezes this car asked everyone to think about each statement and to check off each one on the list this would give each pupil a record showing i believe that statement i do not believe this one i'm doubtful about this and so on very quickly everyone completed the list of the six statements the class had chosen and now miss carr could add up with the whole class thought about each statement from the rabbit's foot idea clear on down the line to the m these are the opinions of the whole class now that we've recorded our opinions i think we should investigate to find out whether or not our opinions are based on good reasons first how about a rabbit's foot we're carrying one bring good luck it seems to me there's one way to find out alan yes ms carr will you hand out these rabbits feet to 10 students who would volunteer to carry them for a week now this is the first step in our experiment yes this will be an actual scientific experiment to find out if carrying a rabbit's foot will bring good luck to the 10 volunteers like many experiments this one will extend over a period of time ms carr wrote the experiment on the board then george listed the students who will not carry rabbit's feet and allen listed those who will carry them for a whole week at the end of the week each student will report what happened meanwhile marion wrote on the board the names of her group their job will be to look up weather reports to find out if the groundhog seeing his shadow really governs the weather they'll report next week too but some of the statements do not take so much time to investigate we can test this statement right away glass is a non-conductor of electricity first alan and larry test their batteries and circuit it's all right the bulb lights up and if a metal rod is put in the circuit it lights again so we know that metal is a conductor of electricity but what about glass nothing happens no light now do you believe that glass is a non-conductor of electricity there's no doubt about it now because our experiment proved that statement to be a fact while alan put away the electricity experiment things miss carr recorded the result now the students were basing these new opinions on evidence experiments and reasoning it wasn't just guesswork anymore a week later marion and her group were ready with their report on the groundhog statement and while marion was copying her records miss carr called for individual reports on the rabbit's foot experiment allen was first i was one of the ten who carried a rabbit's foot i found a quarter last saturday i called that good luck i didn't carry one on wednesday i won the school poster contest and on thursday i got the pretty little mark in history i guess that's good luck and bad luck i did carry a rabbit's foot the only unusual thing that happened was that when this could be called good luck or bad one by one all the pupils reported on what had happened to them during the week and they finally agreed that carrying a rabbit's foot doesn't really affect the daily events of their lives so their experiment proved the first statement to be just a superstition marion would you like to give the report for your group now well we studied the united states weather report for the last 10 years for our state then we organized our materials and this is a good job of research for every groundhog day or february 2nd the weather was listed if it was fair the groundhog would have seen his shadow and if it was cloudy he couldn't have seen his shadow but shadow or not the temperature never varied more than two degrees from normal the groundhog had nothing to do with spring weather when we seek to answer our questions by observation and research and experimentation as we have been doing we are using the scientific method the scientific method is our most valuable weapon in the search for truth modern man uses the scientific method in research to help him base his opinions on facts for everything he can observe he tries to discover the natural cause in the search for truth scientists have invented apparatus to observe things that mankind never saw before in learning the truth about a rabbit's foot is a good luck charm we use the scientific method and right on down the list the use of the scientific method gave us the truth now why not use what we have learned to discover the truth about the last three statements does a pint of milk weigh more than a pint of cream try it at home for yourself here's another will hot water freeze quicker than cold water try it yourself don't be satisfied with just anybody's guess does water really expand when it freezes try this experiment yourself it's simple do you believe this is the right answer well it was alan with his rabbit's foot who started us off on the search for and out of it he learned the scientific method and so did we how many believe this is the best way to try to understand the world we live in [Music] i love it i think i have a color version of that somewhere but um i think it's even in worse shape than that one was um i'm hoping to run across the original color elements when i'm scanning the cornet stuff that i have um it's time to watch some psas from the 70s i think that we didn't give 1970s a break this time we were either in the 50s the 40s or the 80s so here's some 1970s to get you a good vibe uh i have been before my nighttime viewing before i go to bed is uh i've been watching the rockford files and it's because of the pacing because of the music because of the this character it's a really slow i mean even though it's it's action detective you know whatever it's it's the pacing is so slow and so um just kind of makes me feel all warm and so i can just fall asleep and occasionally i have crazy dreams about los angeles circa 1970s anyways here's uh 1970s uh psas and ads i might have shown some of these before but i'm trying to show them a different way which i don't you know whatever anyways uh here we go amanda wright has been coming to this
