the av geeks lunchtime streaming show that was a truck song and sometimes we're lucky when we uh look in our film can we find there's a program guide and so this will sometimes give us clue us in to what we're supposed to be asking uh let's see so the objectives of this are to provide stimulation for use of oral and written language to create positive images of work and workers to capitalize on young children's interest in big drugs to give children an opportunity to imagine life as a trucker to show children the importance of trucks and transportation in our lives to take children outside their immediate environment and present a panoramic a panorama of us physical geography economic activities and communities and this is based on a book written by diane siebert truck song and it's released in two versions one for preschool kindergarten and primary students and one for intermediate students both are exciting visual tools to provide context and stimulus for growth in language social studies and values uh and here's the questions that i'm supposed to ask you um after we've watched oh that's before showing the film okay so i should have asked this prior to showing tell us about some big trucks you have seen what did they look like what were they carrying can you always tell what trucks are carrying why did you ever see big trucks that are painted in pretty colors are all polished up with lots of shiny chrome why do you think truckers paint their trucks so fancy and keep them show signing show so shiny accept all answers that's what it says now to ask after name the kinds of trucks you saw in the film describe the kinds of landscape and whether the truck drove in during the film um from what you saw in the film do you agree with the song that america is beautiful what scene did you think was the most beautiful circumstances permitting acquaint or reacquaint the class with song america the beautiful especially references to spacious skies amber waves of grain and purple mountain majesties play or sing the song if possible do you think the trucker was proud of his work why would you think so would you like to ride in a big truck like the one truck song why do you think you'd like to be a truck driver why so interesting um yeah that's why we show the films uh and this one you know we actually had on we have on 16 millimeter and this is why i'm excited to show films to you guys because i can pull out some films that i've been looking at the title and going like what does that mean truck song primary grades uh and does it really have a song to make 16 millimeter available to you uh this next film features a cat enjoy my name is olive mixture and i'd like to tell you the story of the most important person in my life [Music] chino and i have been together for 15 years i can still remember the first night we met it was raining cats and dogs well cats anyway what's that there's this stray cat go on go back home well i wish i couldn't hear it just reminds me a lot of you might think i was just a mean old woman leaving a little cat like that out in the cold but i thought about athena and i just didn't want to go through all that again well that's why i'm not going out there is this too wet besides none of my business now take just a little look oh it's gone that's what i thought well i have seen some homely cats in my time but you are the homeless i sound like a siamese but you look more alley to me oh you better get you dried off haven't you come in here i don't know why i picked that little rascal up the last thing i wanted was to get involved and here i was doing it again well here you are you're sopping wet where did you come from are you hungry are you hungry i bet you are well i hope you like cornflakes always like corn flakes it's athena's dish what's her favorite i couldn't believe i was pulling out a thing in this bowl that bowl hadn't been touched since athena died and here i was feeding cornflakes to a stranger and what was well still athena's house not your paw in the milk what a sloppy kitty didn't anybody teach you manners it's a way athena used to go at it no i lost my athena about five months ago and you know what i said to myself when i lost my athena i said olive don't you ever ever ever do that again it's kind of upsetting when things happen to him you know and that's why [Applause] i don't want you to take it personally and i have to not let you stay here i don't want you to get your feelings hurt you see i just can't have another kitty around here stay here until you warm up and then you'll have to go chino was beginning to act as if he found a home and you know it was good to be sitting in front of the fire with someone again it's late well you're just gonna have to stay here until tomorrow but then out you go [Music] i'm sure chino didn't want to be alone any more than i did now he found me i'll never know [Music] what are you doing here woke me up i thought you were downstairs what happened you were lonely down there well you can stay here i guess you want somebody to talk to well now you can talk to me i have someone to talk to too go to sleep now no doubt about it he was here to stay let me look at you gino yes i think i'm gonna call you chino you like that name you look very chinese come on go to sleep and that's how my life with chino began [Music] so years passed very quickly we shared many happy days together and before i knew it we were celebrating his 15th birthday happy birthday to you happy birthday dear chino happy birthday to you well now let's make a wish i'm sure we both wished for the same thing to spend many more years together [Music] i realized that for every human year a cat ages seven years so china was now 105 years old he was getting on but to me he hadn't changed he was still the same old chino [Music] the first time i felt there was something wrong was when i was cleaning up after our party time for our afternoon matching up oh i hate too much cake come on now what is the matter with you you always run up and beat me up what's the stairs with you i didn't pay too much attention at first but then it became obvious that something really was wrong chino oh there you are we come in here and have your dinner i don't want to run around all over the place looking for you come on it's not like you to be off your feet now this is two days i've had to chase you around what's the matter with you she know well i don't like it i don't like the way you're behaving i think we better go and see the doctor i think what frightened me most was not knowing what was wrong well i have to tell you something you've got a very old animal here oh i know that you know most cats don't live to be this old i understand that i've had cats before i know that when they're 15 years old it's much older it's almost mine miss mixter you know it might be uh a kindness to china if you well if you thought about yes put him away what for sometimes it's the best thing to do he's well of course if there was something wrong with him but i mean you don't you can't be serious well you see he's a very very old cat and i'm afraid he's not very i know that he is an old cat and so am i old you think i should be put away too being old is not a crime it's because chino and i were old didn't mean we were ready to give up nobody enjoyed life more than chino and i the animals seem to understand better than the doctor and finally even the doctor realized that i was not going home without chino you know what i think let me let me try something may i take him for a second oh please doc let's just see something well i think i just better take him somewhere else let me try something here now you call it call him good and loud gino chino see that look at that can you just turn right around one second i don't want to shock you miss mixer i think uh we may have solved our problem i think i know what's wrong with gina what what what's the matter with him i think he's deaf oh my goodness is that why you haven't been talking to me is that why you didn't come when i rang your bell it's very common and cat's this old you see oh i never thought that you hear it you can't hear me death it's the last thing in the world i would have imagined poor chino he was probably trying to tell me all along how i've been so stupid as not to see it well i thought we'll just have to accept the fact that we can't talk to each other anymore how do you find out what's wrong now you know there's something that might work um it's unusual i'll say it was unusual i thought it was the strangest thing i'd ever heard but chino and i decided to give it a try you've got to try to understand me because you have to help us today everything depends on that and if you do then you'll be able to hear again and we can talk to each other like we used to how hard how did we turn out to be so old oh well never mind let's go here we go now you see this piece will fit in chino's ear and the battery is attached to this collar i never would have thought of a hearing aid for a cat should we give it a try okay one more time come on boy that's it if at first you don't succeed this is the most difficult part as i warned you okay okay it doesn't look like he's gonna cooperate i'm sorry it may be just too much for him i urged the doctor to try again and then i realized the only person chino would listen to was me gino chino listen to me i know that annoys you in your ear but you have to leave it in there talks like what you said it's amazing it's just amazing does he look pleased oh yes oh thank you we heard you he heard you thank you very much thank you you've taught me a lot about animals oh you have indeed come on come on it's gonna be just like the good old days tina [Applause] [Music] [Applause] wow that took a interesting turn i couldn't remember i we uh i showed this film as part of a show that we did called show us your cats where we showed a bunch of films about cats and that film that that show was was outrageous how many people showed up people love watching films about cats and uh one of them is definitely it's about a cat that dies um it's called the 10th good thing about barney uh and um that one's sad but it's bittersweet because it also talks about like how to reflect you know on the positives of the cat being in your life all that time um but this one i couldn't remember how it ended and i was like oh right is this one where the cat dies i can't remember no the cats are deaf and uh i'm sure all of us who have cats would go were thinking like would my cat tolerate wearing a hearing aid and i would have to say the answer is no um our cat josie would not tolerate a hearing aid so it's a wonderful sentiment but i don't think it would work in the real world um but it's a pleasant story anyways and geraldine paige was in it well not crazy all right uh this next film on on the can it's it's lighting but it's actually lightning enjoy when we get a charge build up in a cloud the opposite polarity within the earth follows under the cloud such points that the magnitude of the charge buildup is sufficient to break the air down and it's just like closing a switch a discharge begins to occur when fingers of luminous charge work their way out from the charge center heading in a general way to air between two clouds or between their cloud and ground so that current may flow through the discharge path that's created now if you could really see all the individual happenings within there you would see that the total lightning flash goes zap zap zap zap with 0 2 to 10 or 20 individual bright flashes there down through the qualities of time man has feared the things he couldn't understand lightning was one of these terrifying unearthly an olympian power used by the warring gods to destroy each other but in the age of reason man overcame his fears and began to strip the cloak of mystery from the fire that split the heavens it started in 1752 when franklin's kite string captured a sample of lightning to me by men of science 200 years ago as today research was the key to progress with the simple means at his disposal franklin guided the weapon of the gods to earth and trapped a fragment in glass and metal foil and identified it as electricity more than a century passed then in 1879 a miracle was performed on the public square of cleveland ohio men and women could walk around and see by electricity after the sun went down but it soon became clear that electricity could never work its miracles for the people of america while thunderbolts from the skies crashed unchallenged and man's newly harnessed power night and day the earth is bombarded by lightning six thousand times a minute it strikes lightning of course is uh is an extremely valuable phenomenon when the complete lightning flash is formed which may in fact be several miles long a large amount of light is released and noise which we know is thunder its primary objective in the discharge is to pass from the cloud to the earth and it is going to get there by any means the currents that may reach value is a hundred or two hundred thousand amperes although normally not quite that large and these individual strokes last for times in the order of tens of microseconds we get a repetitive operation here or repetitive phenomena that takes place now it is these individual strokes that have not only the very high current but give the explosive burning and blasting effects that you observe if you're fortunate or unfortunate enough to be right in the vicinity of the lightning flash the voltages of course are as high as the voltage has to be to cause it for that much current since you drew your last breath lightning struck the earth somewhere a hundred times nature generates electricity in the clouds inside this thunderhead turbulent air currents are at work raindrops are swept upward uniting and disuniting forming positive and negative electrical charges in this separation and concentration of charges the cloud to earth capacitor becomes charged negative usually in the cloud and an equal but opposite positive charge in the earth below when the voltage becomes high enough the capacitor discharges in a flash of lightning lightning may strike any taste whatsoever uh in urban areas where their population is high and where it could be a bothersome problem normally strikes to the high structures which are in general grounded structures well some of the things that a practical engineer has to be concerned about on transmission lines are how often is this transmission power going to be hit and how much voltage is produced between the electrical conductors and the supporting hanger for the towers he really wants to be sure that the voltage never gets high enough to cause a breakdown of this electrical insulation because if it does your lights are going to go out for a while about half the strokes are single the rest multiple having from 2 to 42 successive discharges along the same path but whether multiple or single in character a lightning discharge begins with a stepped leader in most instances this leader steps earthward in a series of hesitating movements on contact current retracing the leader path from earth to cloud builds up within millionths of a second to thousands of amperes a violent and destructive force when lightning strikes an overhead power line the insulators may be flashed over wooden poles may be split another damage may be wrought by high voltage invisible traveling waves that move at the speed of light surprisingly lightning doesn't actually have to strike a line to cause high voltage waves within the cloud to earth electrostatic field a concentration of earth charges called a bound charge accumulates on the power line when lightning discharges the cloud in any direction the electrostatic field collapses and the bound charge is released high voltage waves then travel over the line in opposite directions then in blueprint fundamentals when a wave reaches a grounded line end its voltage drops to zero and the wave is reflected back with reverse polarity on reaching an open line end it is increased to double voltage and reflected back over the line practically unchanged if the voltage is high enough to cause line flashover the wave is chopped part is reflected back with opposite polarity but the wavefront continues on toward the station if a wave reaches an unprotected transformer a similar reflection occurs the voltage is almost doubled and nearly doubles the steepness of the wave front causing high stresses between the turns and coils of the winding lightning and surge voltage stresses in electrical apparatus must be held to safe levels by lightning arresters those vital guardians against apparatus destruction and power interruptions inside this modern station type lightning arrester are two essential parts a thyroid valve element and a series gap unit having pre-ionizing elements that accurately control gap spark over at normal power voltage thyroid acts as an insulator preventing bypassing of power current but when lightning strikes the power circuits the gap spark over and with the overvoltage impact pyrite's resistance automatically decreases and it instantaneously becomes an excellent conductor discharging the lightning current harmlessly to ground at the end of the lightning discharge the thyroid valve closes by the increase of its resistance to normal and the gaps extinguish the small follow current over and over again the arrester can perform this protective operation whenever lightning or surge voltages occur always preventing any disturbance of the power flow to consumers when lightning a restaurant transformer are widely separated in terms of circuit feed voltage passes the arrestor and reaches the transformer where it nearly doubles by reflection and contains an oscillation caused by charging the transformer capacitance through inductance of the circuit but when the lightning arrester is connected close to the transformer or other apparatus to be protected the protection afforded will be most efficient the double voltage stress by reflection is prevented the oscillation is negligible when aircraft are struck by lightning the oncoming lightning flash usually attaches itself to one of the outward extremities of the aircraft the lightning current then flows through the aircraft's skin and structure and exits out of usually another extremity and proceeds on its way the aircraft is quite capable of carrying the several hundred thousand amperes even of natural lightning current provided that it's various critical we make sure that proper protection and control of the lightning current flow is afforded this current only and therefore we only have to carry it for that period of time we inside the aircraft do not feel any differences of potential as this current flows through the aircraft and are safe from any damaging effects can you visualize this model as a tree if you can the first thing that you should be aware of is be sure that you never stand underneath of an isolated tree what very frequently happens is the lightning hits the tree the tree is a poor conductor and it jumps across to the poor unfortunate individual and goes through him and that has a good chance of killing the person another area where people do not fully appreciate the danger is on golf courses and particularly if they're on the high hill and swinging a metal club now this also presents a path for the discharge of the cloud there is one other point i'd like to mention that if a person is hit by liking he can often be resuscitated literally brought back to life if he is given artificial resuscitation inside of the automobile appears to be the safest place also being in the home is safe but in with the automobile protection uh you're inside of a metal casing and if the lightning should strike the car top the lightning will be directed through to ground around the metal casing and that is the path of least resistance [Music] lightning is not all bad there's a tremendous amount of beauty a lightning storm if you're in a safe position you can really enjoy the fire techniques the spectacle the random flashing to the intensity of the lighting the extension and the rumbling of the thunder it can be very beautiful well when it just ended um i love it absolutely love it we i showed a film earlier in the year called thunderbolt hunters which kind of covers a lot of the same ground as this and i feel like it was ge that did this as well but it was back like in the 40s 30s maybe um love it such a great great film all right uh let's see uh yeah we all love books let's learn how to take care of them so one afternoon bobby and his grandmother came to this bookstore it was bobby's birthday grandmother was going to buy him a book and he could choose it himself [Music] inside the bookstore there were more new books than bobby had ever seen before [Music] there were picture books and space books and fairy tales which should bobby choose there was one it was a good book about a bear winnie the pooh bobby's teacher read stories from this book could bobby have this book yes and this picture book was for bobby's little sister sue at home everyone was eager to see what bobby had bought even frisky bobby's dog seemed excited first bobby gave sue the picture book grandmother had bought her sue thanks grandmother she was surprised she liked her new book it had nice pictures but sue didn't know how to take care of books very well watch that's not very good for a book you have to take care of books now bobby showed his book it looked very familiar to father he said he'd be right back somewhere on this bookshelf father remembered there was an old book of his this was a book that father had owned since he was a boy father's old book and bobby's new book had the same stories about winnie the pooh even though father's book was very old it was still in good condition the pages were clean and there were no marks on them yes father had taken good care of his book could bobby take care of a new book as well as his father had father said the way to start taking care of a new book is to open it right the back part which is called the binding is stiff and easy to break unless you open the new book in the right way father showed bobby how he had opened his book when it was new he opened the front cover and back cover and pressed down with his finger along the binding then he did the same two small groups of pages first from the back and then from the front working toward the center grandmother remembered that father had done this very well when he was a boy could bobby open his book correctly without breaking the binding yes bobby knew how to open a new book sue was learning how to now bobby was ready to read his new book but mother said it was time for supper bobby knew he couldn't take his book with him where should he keep it on this table no then sue might accidentally tear it frisky might pull a book off that table too very little children and pets don't understand how to take care of books bobby had a special place for his books a bookshelf just high enough so that sue and frisky couldn't reach it books must be kept in a proper place bobby was eager to finish eating so he could read his new book he knew he must not read while eating food might drop on his book but when supper was finished then he and sue could get their books before they read their books bobby and sue put sue's crayons away with loose crayons or pencils around marx might get on the books then they wash their hands for hands must always be clean before touching a book clean hands don't leave marks on books now bobby and sue were ready to begin reading their new books sue noticed how carefully bobby turned the pages see the pages would tear easily unless he was very careful sue was learning how to take care of books from her big brother bobby knew how to take care of his books what nice pictures what clean pages and what funny stories here is edward bear coming downstairs now bump bump bump on the back of his head bobby really liked his new book he wanted to keep it for a very long time bobby and sue red until it was bedtime bobby wanted to mark his place in his new book but how could he do it father told him any clean piece of paper is good for a bookmark or even a postcard will do bookmarks like this would help him keep his place and would not hurt the book bobby knew where to keep his book on the bookshelf standing books neatly on the shelf protects them it saves them from broken banks and from falling on the floor bobby brought his new book to school the next day everyone wanted to see it miss johnson said she would show it to all the children but first she had another book to show the children look at this it's a storybook that once was as new and pretty as bobby's book but look at it now its cover was spoiled because the book was left in the rain it had torn pages and smudges from dirty hands and fingers and there were pencil and crayon marks on the pictures and words did somebody's little brother or sister do all this to what was once a new and clean book no someone who was in miss johnson's class last year did it the way some boys and girls treat books you'd think they were little children bobby's class could see why everyone must learn to take care of books so that they can be enjoyed many many times later when it was library time bobby read his new book the other children read books from their library watch out judy is the book all right no a page has been torn miss johnson knew that accidents happen even when we're careful she was happy that judy had brought the book right to her miss johnson had a special mending tape for repairing torn pages by mending the book right away the tear won't get worse there almost as good as new now whoever uses it will see that books are taken care of here and now the book must be returned to its proper place bobby knows how much fun it is to read books and what good friends they are he is happy that he knows how to take care of books do you know how to take care of the books you read oh yes i uh remember very well uh not taking care of a book but i i cherished um very much uh very sad um when a book tears or your younger sibling tears into it or a dog chews it um and uh you know likewise checking out books from the library and seeing that they've been mutilated uh textbooks especially i remember elementary school textbooks i remember the first time what was it it was like what grade i must have been in seventh grade eighth grade fifth sixth grade i can't remember anyways we all had name tag stickers he said hello my name is skip uh that's what was online um anyway so i took it off and like was opening up my brand new like math book and the sticker fell on it and stuck and i couldn't peel it up it was like super adhesive and i couldn't get it up and um so the whole year i was like i'm gonna have to pay for this i'm gonna have to pay for this and it's got my name on it so there's no way to get around it um so yeah i'm sure i was charged 45 cents for some nominal fee um for that uh thanks so much for joining us today uh i wanted to we're gonna as we leave uh today i'm gonna show one of the films that i scanned uh we've scanned over 140 films from the coronet uh library collection and i've been showing some of them like this last film uh that have sound but i have a bunch of them that don't have sound that that were raw uh kodachrome prints uh stuff that was shot in the camera so you'll see slates you'll see uh people not ready yet you'll see stuff out of focus um this is the raw stuff that's beautiful beautiful kodachrome never been run through a projector um and spliced together with little bits of white tape not even splicing tape so uh this doesn't have any sound but i figured that some of you might dig it this is one called archery for girls that i tried to show i think on the telecity that i have here but it just was this the little white tape splices were just falling apart
