so [Music] this is the story of the butterfly that stamped it's a true story and it happened just so [Music] long ago in the high and far-off times when the world was nearly new there was a lovely garden full of orange trees and camphor trees and roses and in the middle of that great and golden palace were 999 queens [Music] and in the middle of the 999 queens was the most wise and benevolent sovereign and some of his wives were nice but some were simply horrid and the horrid ones quarreled with the nice ones and made them horrid too and then they all quarreled with sulaiman been dowd and that was horrid for him he was of course an extremely powerful king he had only to turn the ring on his finger to summon up four great gull wing gins who could easily have magic all those 999 quarrelsome wives into white mules of the desert or camels or even pomegranate seeds but he didn't he knew that would be boasting and showing off so when the quarreling became too great he would slip away to seek out his first and most loved wife balkas the most beautiful oh my lord and light of my eyes said balchus please turn the ring on your finger and make a magic to show those quarrelsome queens how great and important you are oh my lady in delight of my life said suleiman bin daoud i cannot do as you ask for that would be mere boastful show perhaps if i sit alone beneath my favorite camphor tree i might come upon the answer balkas loved sulaiman bin daoud very much so she hid where she could watch over him [Music] suddenly the silence was broken by the sound of quarreling suleiman bin daoud looked up expecting to see some of his worrisome wives but no it was two little butterflies really wife i don't know how you dare to keep on insulting me so said one little butterfly don't you know that i have only to stamp with my foot and all sulaiman bin dao's great golden palace then his lovely garden would immediately vanish in a clap of thunder then for the first time in years suleiman bin daoud forgot about his quarrelsome wives and started to laugh at the little butterflies boast and said little brother please come here the butterfly was dreadfully frightened but wishing to impress his wife he tried to look brave and did as he was bid little brother whispered the king why did you tell that enormous fib to your wife [Music] oh king live forever gasp the butterfly please forgive me but she is always quarreling with me and i just had to think of something to stop her you know what wives are like [Music] yes mild sulaiman been dowd i know little brother see where your boasting has got you the great king heard you and it serves you right for telling lies heard me said the butterfly of course he heard me i meant him to hear me i'm not frightened of anyone indeed said his wife well what did he say well he um uh between you and me my dear he uh uh he asked me not to stamp after all his palace and garden must have cost him a great deal so as a kindness to him i promised i wouldn't [Music] gracious said his wife and sat quite still [Music] sulaiman bin dao just had to laugh at the impudence of the bad little butterfly and bulka smiled and she thought through my lord's selfless care for these two little creatures i may find a way to save him from the incessant quarreling of his queens little sister come here please do you believe what your husband said oh queen live forever fluttered the butterflies wife i pretended to be impressed just to keep him happy you know what husbands are i know little sister next time he threatens to stamp tell him to do so it will put a stop to his boasting once and for all away flew the butterfly's wife to her husband and soon they were quarreling worse than ever remember warned the butterfly remember what i can do if i step my foot i don't believe you you couldn't bend a blade of grass go ahead i dare you to do it stamp stand she wants me to stamp pettit the butterfly you know i can't do it oh help me please she'll laugh at me to the end of my days no she won't little brother she will never laugh at you or quarrel needlessly with you again [Music] oh slave said sulaiman bin dao when this gentleman stamps his foot you will make my palace and gardens disappear in a clap of thunder when he stamps again you will bring them back carefully oh there you are cried the butterflies why i thought you were going to stamp go on then stamp stamp and the butterfly did oh gracious gasp the butterflies wife i'll never doubt your word again oh please put everything back to normal so the butterfly who was nearly as frightened as his wife stamped again [Applause] [Music] then all 999 queens ran shrieking out of the palace oh head queen they gasped one minute we were busily quarreling in the palace and the next we were in a great thundering darkness [Music] then balkas the most beautiful and wise said it is nothing a butterfly complained to our king about his quarrelsome wife so it pleased our lord sulaiman bin daoud to teach her a lesson oh gasp the queens if this great deed is done by our king on account of a little quarrelsome butterfly how much greater will be his revenge on us who have vexed him for many years with our incessant quarreling and they tiptoed back to the palace mousy quiet oh my lady and jewel of my happiness said the king when did this marvelous thing happen i have been so busy jesting with a butterfly that i don't know how this came to pass and balkus told him and they lived happily and peacefully forever and ever as did the butterfly's wife and the boastful little butterfly himself the first and last butterfly ever in the world to stamp [Music] so uh i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the lunchtime streaming 80 geek show um i hope everybody had a good holiday weekend that was restful and allowed you to recharge a little bit and maybe spend some time with yourself or your friends your family the um film was the butterfly that stamped maybe this is this is a rug kipling story but maybe this uh somehow is involved in the butterfly effect a chaos theory um conjecture where the flutters of a butterfly's wings ends up causing a tornado um look it up it's fascinating um so some of you joined me on friday it was christmas day and you didn't really join me you joined my blender and we tried this experiment that kind of worked but not 100 um so we had probably 600 clips from our stock footage website uh archival clips that have been tagged with christmas or winter or santa or as it turns out the blender also included blender uh and um we had them play randomly via uh the blender's curation but occasionally it would stick on a clip so it had to be restarted and so it would start back from the scratch and again be random but there was a lot of repeat and the idea was it wasn't supposed to repeat over all those clips but it stuck twice so and you know that's fine i was sitting there drinking coffee uh watching actually some clips i had not seen before and some of the home movies were glorious so hopefully you uh caught it enjoyed it for what it was and then went and celebrated your christmas however you celebrate it um it was fun for me and i'll just keep refining it and maybe it will show up again maybe the blender will do arbor day or maybe some other holiday i don't know we'll see uh but anyhow um one of the things that i was working on this weekend even though i said i wasn't going to be working was uh really looking at the films that we've digitized over the last year and trying to get them online get them on to youtube and internet archive and also make them available so that i can stream some of them here because there were hundreds of films that we digitized and so um kind of been working on that and so you'll see a bunch of those showing up on youtube if you're subscribed to my channel uh and i will also show some of them and talk about some of them but the this next film was a really interesting thing this came from a guy who worked for a company called movie makers and um which was a small two-man industrial film uh company out of cleveland and he sent me a bunch of stuff to digitize i digitized it i showed some of it earlier in the year there's some stuff i didn't show and this is one of the odd things this is a 35 millimeter film maybe shown in a theater um 35 usually wasn't distributed to tv stations because most of them didn't have the equipment to project it but this is an odd thing so enjoy [Music] wow [Music] [Music] is [Music] hey [Music] um so wow that was insane um here i was gonna talk about how much i love that washing machine uh music like whatever that music was used for would i would buy it um because it was so sexy and i could not move my mouse i couldn't do anything um and uh the whole thing went kabuk kablooey uh so i apologize for that um for that interruption because that was nuts all right um all right so we rebooted there we go um it's going to take me a little while to kind of get back my bearings uh in the meantime let's learn how to read a newspaper [Music] so [Music] no matter what you're interested in you're likely to find something about it in the newspaper [Music] some of the features in a newspaper may interest you and some may not if you notice how the newspaper is organized you'll have no trouble finding the features that you want to read of course the main thing you look for in a newspaper is the news roger our guidance recommendations [Music] [Applause] so so [Music] [Music] few of us are interested in every item in a newspaper but no matter which articles you read you'll get more out of them if you read critically newspapers are made by people and people have opinions most newsmen try to be as objective as possible but even so their opinions may have an effect on the way the news is reported if you know something about how a new story is written you'll be better able to evaluate it all of the day's events cannot be reported in detail the editors must decide which stories they'll use and how much coverage they'll give to each of them your understanding of the news is also affected by the reporter who covers the event his approach to the story may reflect something of his newspaper's overall personality and reader appeal a reporter makes several decisions that you should know about he has gathered information from what in his opinion are the best available sources what the reporter considers the most important fact will be his first paragraph the lead of the story protests against the city's plans for an expressway extension were registered today by leaders of the city southwest side dr robert allen principal of the community high school declared that the proposed roadway would separate the school building from the athletic field and would be a safety hazard in other ways officials of the federal highway commission have stated that they will hold up approval of the plans until the objections have been considered and settled this kind of writing giving facts in order of descending importance is called an inverted pyramid the reporter has used his own judgment in deciding the relative importance of various facts how does this affect the reader's understanding of the story the news stories on page one are those which the editors consider to be the most important another newspaper might treat the same story in a different way how will these differences affect the reader's understanding of the event we've seen that a new story may reflect the reporters opinions about the relative importance of various facts the story may also reflect the policy of the newspaper toward political and social issues ignoring the governor's warnings of an imminent financial crisis the senate yesterday sentenced the administration's revenue bill to its customary burial committee the administration steamroller having pushed the governor's tax package through the house of representatives last week finally ran out of power yesterday as a senate coalition voted to defeat the bill in evaluating the information in a news article you should also check its source the reporter may be identified by a byline this usually means that he has considerable freedom to express his own opinions when you read a byline article be alert for such opinions a byline can help you in your evaluation by identifying the source of the information there are several other ways in which you may identify a new source ask yourself whether the source is a reliable one is it based on rumor or subject to censorship some articles are based on press releases issued by large organizations or by public relations firms you should be ready to evaluate the reliability of stories based on these sources newspapers are produced by people and people have opinions while a good newspaper man tries to keep his reports as objective as possible there is a place in the paper where frank opinion can be legitimately expressed newspaper editorials comment on a wide variety of topics this comment can help you to evaluate the paper's handling of straight news reports for example this newspaper favors redesigning of the expressway and commends the federal highway commission for its action this newspaper does not oppose the new design but it sees a danger in the government action and predicts increased costs to the taxpayer readers often agree or disagree with the editors these opinions may help you to evaluate the editorial policy of the newspaper syndicated columnists may also present views that differ from those of the editors of the paper editorial cartoons by a staff cartoonist usually reflect the policy of the newspaper syndicated cartoonists may present contrasting viewpoints by comparing the differing viewpoints you'll be better able to form an intelligent opinion of your own a newspaper contains opinion on a wide variety of subjects reviews do not usually represent an official policy of the newspaper they are the opinions of one person you probably enjoy comparing the reactions of the reviewer with your own reviews can also provide factual information that can add to your enjoyment since few of us have time to read an entire newspaper thoroughly we want to get the most benefit from the articles we do read we've considered several things that will help you get the most benefit from your reading the various features in a newspaper are arranged so that you can quickly find the articles you want to read as you read you should be aware that news articles may reflect the opinions of the newspaper staff the amount of space devoted to a story the size of the headline and the location of the story in the newspaper all these indicate the importance which the editors attached to this event the first or lead paragraph gives the facts which the reporter considered most important the sources of information are important ask yourself whether these sources are qualified and reliable your understanding of the news can also be affected by the writer's choice of words you can check on this by reading a report of the same event in a different newspaper the people who make newspapers usually try to be as objective as possible but in deciding what to report and how to present it a newsman must use his own selective judgment most newspapers have editorial policies which affect the way the news is evaluated and reported you can make your own evaluations and form your own opinions as you read the [Music] news to get the most out of a newspaper you need to learn to read it critically media literacy i love it we need it we need it so bad oh my god uh some comments people said wow let's update this for the internet yes absolutely um you know this was shown to this was made in the 70s and was shown to um definitely my generation but um you know hopefully people a little bit the i guess the later boomers um but they forgot completely forgot how to be literate how to read um and be critical of what they're reading um that's my soapbox there you go anyways um so i have a lot of films that have the same title and uh sometimes i just gloss over them because i'm like well i've already seen that film and then when i find occasion to actually watch it i realize this is a totally different film uh and so uh having a common title is sometimes a bane of my existence those unique titles are easier to track down and figure out and i can oftentimes find things uh online in databases that let me know like okay well that's what this is but when i run across the film like this this next one which is little red riding hood there are scores of versions of this on film and i didn't know which is which so uh this one is first time i've seen this [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] wow [Music] blah hey [Applause] foreign [Applause] hmm [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] i know [Music] foreign [Music] woo wow [Music] wow [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] [Music] happy [Music] ah [Music] so [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] do [Music] um [Music] [Music] then [Music] [Music] [Music] wow [Music] hmm [Music] [Applause] mhm [Music] [Music] uh [Music] [Music] so [Music] oh [Music] [Music] hmm [Music] [Music] [Music] uh oh [Music] wow [Music] uh [Music] wow [Music] ah [Applause] huh uh [Music] um oh oh two two [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] uh [Applause] huh [Music] [Music] wow that was crazy uh i to say again i have not seen that film before um because you see little red riding hood and you're like i've i've seen that i have several copies of that one that's animated one that's with done stop animation one's done with marionettes and so this one i was like huh this one i don't think i've seen before yeah let's watch it holy cow that was just that was really truly nuts um and thanks for watching it with me because yikes um i want to give you a pilot cleanser but i don't know what i got um this might work or this might just throw you further into some sort of hysteria here's a piro in the blackboard well ali raised it now all piro right are you looking for oh you think the picture went behind there no i erased it see i do it with chalk then i erase it like this now we can draw some more pictures that's what's so nice about a blackboard how would you like a picture of a cat there's his head and his body and his tail and there's an ear here's the other ear i'll give him some whiskers like that oh you want to draw oh all right you got some whiskers there we are oh the chalk is a little big so i'll i'll hold it for you that good well those are good looking whiskers yeah well i'll draw a picture of a dog now watch you want to draw his ear all right okay let me raise it i'll hold this hold the chalk for you again that's a little big beautiful there we are what the funny ear oh what kind of a dog is oh it's a hound dog well that's quite a dog and i'll erase this and then we can draw another picture see i'm erasing it i showed you how i did that i think i'll draw a picture of a donkey now watch donkey has a long funny ear and a long nose now give him some feet and you're gonna need some more feet like this and there is the donkey you would what will you want you want to draw his tail all right oh pirro that gives me an idea for a game it's called pin the tail on the donkey yes i'll find oh we can use we can use this for a tail and then i won't pin it i don't get a little piece of tape so we can we can fasten it on and then you show me where you want the donkey's tail but to make it a game we blindfold you and then you try to find it see we'll put this we'll put this right over here it's all right we have to put it over your head to blindfold you yeah hold still we'll still do it hold still there we are there we are now turn around three times one two three how can you see you can't see now where do you want me to put the donkey's tail are you sure you can't see uh uh are you sure you can oh pirro you can see yes well here we'll have to pull the bag down a little so you can't see because that's what makes the game fun there we are now round three times one two three you did oh come on you're all right now where do you want me to put the donkey sail oh i think you're going in the wrong direction bureau that looks oh oh you're going in the wrong direction again that looks better oh careful you missed that there you found the blackboard now show me where do you want where do you want the donkey's tail right there are you sure right there all right we'll put on put the tail right right right where you pointed and look where the donkey's tail is oh isn't that a funny place see rope with the tail on the donkey's nose isn't this game fun hmm well guessing wrong is part of the game hero will you want me to turn the donkey around would that be fair well you don't want to play anymore you want to draw pictures again well p roll let's finish the game show me you're a good sport b-roll then we can draw pictures all right now turn around get this down so make sure you can't see and turn around three times one two three now show me where to put the donkey tail this time i'll help you a little that looks right i'm getting warm warm oh you're getting a little cold warm oh you're cold again getting cold getting warm warm getting warm oh getting cold cold warm warm very warm very warm hot hot hot hot good now let's see what our beer all decided look see good piro got it in the right place well that game is a lot of fun isn't it and i'm proud of you puro because you finished the game you were a good sport now we can draw pictures again oh but you want to draw something and surprise me uh well you want the board around the other way oh this will be a surprise i wonder what piro is going to draw the effect here's the chalk i wonder what this is going to be what oh you want the chair up all right in front of the bike what how's that ah or you want to sit down my foot oh you want me to put you up in the chair how's that now is the chair far enough forward huh is that a little better right there all right now here we go yes here's the chalk and i don't know what this is going to be oh you want me to close my eyes i'm not watching tell me when i can look you tell me when i can look bureau i wonder what it's going to be i can look now oh who is that me oh fear i'm not going to apologize for showing pirro i love pirro i know some people cannot stand spiro they can't stand some aspect of it the pacing of it they don't like they don't like the little pantomime puppet how stupid it is uh there's something that a lot of people really don't like about it but for me it is um meditative and it's it's like watching bob ross in my mind it's everything is kind of that slow pacing and i don't know so i'm not sorry um now if you wanted to reward me for that for anything that i showed today what you can do is buy us coffee uh maybe you don't want to buy me coffee maybe you feel like i've been bad and you want to punish me um another way you can uh show your support for what we do is to hit like and subscribe and get notifications and you can also share and comment all those things all those things make me uh somehow add up so that we can go to youtube heaven um also you go to avgeeks.com and see uh other films that we have online like i said we have been adding more films on youtube and uh eventually internet archive things that we've been scanning over the last year or so that we just have not had time to go and contribute make available um i've been showing some of those films but a lot of them i mean we did hundreds and hundreds of them and so um it's an opportunity and also i've been putting stuff online that i probably wouldn't show on here because they're longer films and the subject matter is maybe not the most interesting um i will certainly show a short film that's not very interesting but the 30 minutes dedicated to cable wiring i don't think i'm going to do it don't think i'm going to do it um so anyways i it was great to see everybody today and we will be back tomorrow at one o'clock eastern standard time um i hope everybody took care of themselves or are taking care of yourselves and rewinding and loving each other including yourself we will see you again tomorrow hopefully everybody have a good rest of your day take care you
