[Music] [Music] [Music] sometimes in your search for happiness you ponder the meaning of your life you sift your memory for beginnings you send your mind ahead for directions but all you really know is now and you are lost in the present who am i how did i come to be time where does it take me toward death and then what where did i come from [Music] to understand why you were here you must first understand your beginnings at birth you did not suddenly flare into existence out of nowhere you have always lived in pre-earth life you were with your heavenly father there as his spirit sons and daughters you lived until you were ready to come to earth as the poet wordsworth said our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting the soul that rises with us our life star hath had elsewhere it's setting and cometh from afar not in entire forgetfulness and not in utter nakedness but trailing clouds of glory do we come from god who is our home upon entering mortal life the memory of your life before birth was blotted out that you might live by faith and further prepare for the everlastingness of life this mortal body in which your spirit now dwells is subject to pain to difficulties to death for it is through opposition that you grow in strength of character you must know pain to appreciate well-being difficulties to develop courage death to understand eternal life you then whoever you are are related not only to every person upon this earth who lives who has lived who will yet live but to god the father of us all and to his son our savior with your acceptance of the responsibility of earth life you were given a wondrous mortal body in the likeness of god so god created man in his own image in the image of god created he him male and female created he them and the spirit and the body are the soul of man [Music] as sons and daughters of god is it any wonder that you are an eternal part of his plan and purpose and coming from such a noble heritage that you have possibilities far beyond your greatest dreams be assured that your personal search for happiness has real purpose be assured that your life is worth living [Music] life offers you two precious gifts one is time the other freedom of choice the freedom to buy with your time what you will you are free to exchange your allotment of time for trills you may trade it for base desires you may invest it in greed you may purchase with it vanity you may spend your time in pursuit of material things yours is the freedom to choose but these are no bargains for in them you find no lasting satisfaction every day every hour every minute of your span of mortal years must be accounted for and it is in this life that you walk by faith and prove yourself able to choose good over evil right over wrong enduring happiness over mere amusement and your eternal reward will be according to your choosing [Music] a prophet of god has said men are that they might have joy a joy that includes a fullness of life a life dedicated to service to love and harmony in the home and the fruits of honest toil [Music] an acceptance of the gospel of jesus christ of its requirements and commandments [Music] only in these will you find true happiness the happiness which doesn't fade with the lights and the music and the crowds god has placed you on earth without memory of your pre-mortal past but he hasn't left you without hope or without faith in life after death this he has promised you i am the resurrection and the life he that believeth in me though he were dead yet shall he live [Music] one of the best attested facts of sacred history is the resurrection of the lord jesus christ three days following his crucifixion the disciples were gathered together as recorded in scripture then the same day at evening being the first day of the week when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled came jesus and stood in the midst and saith unto them peace be unto you and when he had so said he showed unto them his hands at his side [Music] then were the disciples glad when they saw the lord [Music] just as you lived before mortal birth just as you now live in this life so through the love and sacrifice of your savior do you continue to live after death [Music] like every member of the human race you were born and you must die your birth is a matter of record you take it for granted but death that uncertain door that leads ahead has been for man an awesome mystery life's greatest test comes with the death of a loved one and without faith in the immortality of the soul the separation of death looms forever comfortless [Music] after death though your mortal body lies in the earth you your spirit self being eternal continue to live your memory of this life will remain with you and the knowledge of your life before birth will be restored like coming out of a darkened room into the light through death you will emerge into a place of reawakening and find loved ones waiting to welcome you [Music] oh so [Music] so here you are on earth with no memory of what went before and only faith to whisper what comes after be assured that you are here not by accident or chance but as part of a glorious everlasting plan by a still small voice within you and through revelation to his appointed prophets god our eternal father guides the affairs of his children today as in the past in 1830 god re-established his church and restored the fullness of his gospel once more among men through a modern prophet joseph smith [Music] by revelation our savior made known again the plan of salvation and exaltation salvation comes as a gift to every man through jesus the christ but exaltation which is the highest of eternal opportunities you must earn it is not enough just to believe in jesus christ you must work and learn search and pray repent and improve know his laws and live them [Music] this is the way to peace and happiness and the fullness of everlasting life it is your heavenly father's way we invite you to explore it to test it to pray and search and seriously consider prove all things hold fast that which is good only if you are unafraid of truth can you find it but it leads to limitless opportunities with your loved ones with you always and forever therein lies your happiness a happiness deeper than passing pleasure a happiness beyond the understanding of man a happiness not of the moment but of eternity this is every man's search this is the purpose of life this is the key to happiness for the god and father of us all has said this is my work and my glory to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man [Applause] [Music] god i like how they say god um hey i'm skipped alzheimer welcome to the 80 geeks lunchtime streaming show i'm back live after moving furniture for family yesterday um it wasn't it wasn't the best but you know you do what you you do for family uh so that film the last one we saw a man's search for happiness was made to be shown at the 1964 world's fair in new york and so if you went to the uh latter-day saints uh pavilion uh they would uh sit you in an amphitheater and you would watch this um lots of interesting films around came from that time period so also a parable which was that insane uh film by uh ralph forsberg where jesus played is a jesus-like pantomime uh clown is uh which caused all sorts of controversy including a lutheran minister who said he would shoot the screen with a shotgun and someone from con ed said that they would cut the power to the pavilion without having actually seen the film so this was there was lots of uh religious uh advertising going on um and this was the latter day saints one and they showed this many many many many times and they re-edited it for newer expositions and all that stuff so there it is uh it's time for some magic snake sneakers magic sneakers [Music] um [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] so wow that one was nuts even for that series um exactly encyclopedia britannica in the late 60s early 70s uh released uh several of these films in the let's do let's go series and they're these short little uh films that uh kind of they're meant to be provocative in that they to encourage discussion and have kids kind of talk about what they're seeing and you know do activities based on what they saw and all that and this one is just nuts and it's part of that weird foot fetish uh filmmaker um who also did whose shoes and toes tell which is totally a foot fetch film um but wow yeah that was kind of nuts it's kind of the you know obviously a nod to the red shoes um uh fable but uh yeah that evil character evil blackface character who was the devil maybe i don't know who knows anyways um this is all to prepare you for the next film that we're gonna watch which is uh i think was part of the abc after school i don't know if it was a special or they had different things where they would show either it was a saturday or sunday thing or it was a afternoon like after school thing and so i'm not sure where this falls in that but this is the girl with esp and i have i might have seen this when i was a kid but i haven't seen it as an adult so i'm kind of excited to watch it [Music] make a false move and you'll regret it [Music] hot you yellow belly load down especially at seven in the morning you're gonna get arrested for fouling up the air dad once i'd like to wake up to a normal breakfast egg bacon toast instead ginseng tea for mom kidneys for dad yogurt and wheat germ for jill and pizza for dennis his family is so weird i want my hero to see the barrels flinting in the moonlight good night [Music] i can't stand it what's the matter though you're so grumpy today frankly bill this irregularity is getting medium yeah let's not get off those commercials you're giving me a headache tennis nagging headache why suffer oh gently burning thou dost love [Music] i'm not ready yet that's okay i just don't want to miss anything over here your family is so fabulous are you still counting to a million dennis yeah i'm up to two hundred and fifty thousand one good 150 000 two good night i sweep rest comes to die hard can't sleep maybe it's because you've got two soft mattresses why not try your foster people we are so lucky to have a baby brother who is so cute does he know every tv commercial by heart i'm afraid so quickly one that's great mr hoffman but isn't that a little dangerous don't worry they're hard boiled it always does it when there's a problem at the lab hoffman residence how's the book coming mrs h i'm behind schedule mom it's your publisher you want to know what the title of your book is well maybe a better show all right [Music] hello hello bernard well yeah i thought i'd call it showdown at coyote pass hey everybody um they're having tryouts with school play this afternoon so i'll be a little late is mr kane still the drama club advisor yeah he wants me to try out because you were so talented you know i remember the first play he directed me in time out for ginger oh gosh [Music] do you know how tough it is being utterly average in a family full of geniuses hey laura what about my pizza yes sir maybe i should call a showdown at sundown when i get to the lab today romeo romeo hey where's my pizza i said where's my pizza dad i think the answer to your problem will be solved today right after a man in a white jacket and a red tie comes in why would you say something like that are you going into the prediction business are you predicting this laura i don't know [Music] you know i'm still a nervous wreck from the tryouts i think anybody knows i dropped my clothes off you couldn't help it when you walked across the stage and tripped over the cats it's kind of obvious i don't even know why i'm worrying about it jean green she always does i don't even know why i'd bother to try out so embarrassing i've made up my mind i'm gonna quit the drama club why because you hate me love because i can't act in fact i can't do anything special why are you always putting yourself down because i have no talent if my mother were introducing her family you know what she'd say this is my daughter jill the actress and this is my son dennis the math whiz and uh this is laura she's 13. well what about that vision you had this morning maybe you have psychic powers big deal who knows if it meant anything laura could you predict something that will happen to me i don't know could you try well i can't promise anything read a book or something you're making me self-conscious gee i'm sorry maybe it's too quiet beth your book is upside down [Music] you've got something laura you've got something tell me everything okay beth i think you've got the lead in the play oh thank you laura you're fabulous i think i'm gonna faint i know i'm gonna face i'm gonna get the lead take it easy i'm not sure laura something rather unusual happened at the lab today oh my assistant came in and caused a little bit of an accident and two minutes after he left i figured out the solution to that confounded problem just like that really isn't that a coincidence dennis dennis where are you gonna stop this get out of there and don't step on the eggs and laura my assistant was wearing a white coat and a red tie laura you are fabulous i'm gonna go home right now and start memorizing for the lead just in case bye remind me not to take dennis again he did a commercial for every single item i put in my basket you know laura's had another vision mom isn't that exciting oh well not as exciting as my harrowing experience at the supermarket why did you take him whoever said writers had common sense why can't he be like other kids and just throw tantrums but what do you expect and this is a whiz kid a genius [Music] laura are you in a fall dennis now where can i hide trumpet this time are you okay sure i mean i didn't see anything what do you mean you didn't see anything hi really that's great i'm really happy for you okay bye-bye beth got the lead in the school play hey out of sight that means you had two predictions come true in one day you must feel great [Music] is played by beth howe phyllis is played by gene freeman the second lead i heard about how you predicted beth would get the lead in the play thanks a lot it's nothing personal gene where's laura's name at the bottom of the list she's my understudy there's lauren we found the truth do you really have esp laura will i test english yeah will i make the basketball team but i'm not sure do you go into a trance i don't know come on you guys give her some room you can't hassle laura like this she's sensitive you'll all get a chance to talk with her they will just see me after school and i'll arrange it what's going on well i was so excited about the predictions you gave me i just told a few people guess the word just got around and fast beth i really wish you had laura this is just the beginning i've got it all figured out we're gonna give readings every day from wait a minute wait one minute i never said i could give people predictions the whole idea makes me nervous nervous about what you have a great gift a talent i do of course you do in fact you may be the most talented person in your family well maybe if there's just a couple of people that's right i told you she's right on last week she predicted mark would ask me to the dance and he did lemonade water lemonade lemonade lemonade water been down you guys how do you expect laura to concentrate how do you expect laura to concentrate sorry mrs h hope we didn't disturb you what makes you think 300 kids screaming in my backyard while i'm trying to finish my novel would disturb me thanks a lot beth this isn't turning out at all like i expected gene freeman you're up lemonade lemonade lemonade water before we start laura i have to tell you that i'm really thrilled i got the second lead in the play it's really a much better part okay gene do you want a general reading or is there some particular question you want answered just tell me about that's good i just didn't want to see you get into trouble [Music] why is you guys we've been raided laura can't give any more readings although throw her in the slammer beth i never want to have door oh boy what an actress we just came by because we're really sorry that you got the measles you expect me to believe that after you got my part in the play hey laura needs your costume mr cain told us to get it honest i feel awful i mean i don't even want to be in the play you better have the costume clean it could have measles all over it come on the phantom of sigma phi has struck again well it isn't exactly shakespeare but we'll make it work okay laura why don't you pick up your q on page 12. i can't even find page 12. i'm gonna be a disaster hey just relax you're gonna be just fine relax are you kidding i've got three days to learn my lines in case you've forgotten i struggled for days to learn five lines in my first play everybody gets the case of the nerves let's just get on with it okay [Music] did you have another vision laura yes i did this is the second time i've had a vision about dennis i'm really worried why because dennis wasn't in the vision marvelous marvelous absolutely marvelous congratulations now everybody get ready get ready get ready it's almost time tonight we will be performing for the full house mr kane yes has um anyone ever fainted on stage before not in one of my productions they wouldn't dare costumes hey your mom dad and jill have front row seats dennis isn't there it's okay he's safe at home with the babysitter your mom still doesn't know you had visions about dennis gosh no jill and i decided not to tell intro after she finishes her book besides we're not going to let him out of our sight is everybody places places as hamlet said that played again for without your costume everybody's ready to remember talk loud don't shout are we ready [Applause] um what can i do for you within reason of course [Applause] ladies remember bow down smile now let's get a description of the boy what he was wearing well he's about this tall and he was wearing a red shirt and blue pants or was it a blue shirt and red pants well anyway you can't miss him he recites television commercials by heart oh there are the hoffman's now mrs bell what's wrong it's dennis he's missing oh mercy i'll never forgive myself did you search the entire neighborhood yes everywhere oh basil we've got to do something no need to panic they usually turn up sooner or later oh mom it's all my fault what do you mean laura well you see i had these visions about about dennis being missing for heaven's sakes why didn't you tell me because i didn't want to worry you and and besides i didn't know if it would really happen i made a mess of everything oh lord don't blame yourself hey wait a minute i've got an idea why don't you use your psychic powers to see where dennis is well i don't know if i could my visions have always been of the future and not the present laura you can do it i don't know i'll try now [Music] lieutenant cohen i think i know exactly where dennis is i was watching some trades in tv i guess i fell asleep then lieutenant cohen woke dennis j hoffman you were never ever allowed to leave this house again without telling someone why did you do it i wanted to see laura's play then he remembered something what was that i didn't know where it was i guess you're finally proud of me now what do you mean finally proud of you i have a talent like jill and dennis before i was psychic there wasn't one thing about me that made me stand out with family laura it's not what you do it's what you are honey do you think your father would love me less if i didn't write novels of course not but you don't understand without my esp i'm one big nothing now that's your opinion honey maybe your problem is you do too many things too well what do you mean even you have to admit you get practically straight a's and everything and tonight you proved you can act but more than that we're proud of you because of the fine person that you're turning out to be take your time laura who knows what you're going to turn out to be in the future jonathan harris mr smith from uh lost in space and then i think he was on some weird filmation star wars ripoff saturday morning cartoon or live action show um anyways yeah that's uh i i vaguely remember that and i it i'm not sure if i remember it because i did actually see it as an adult a long time ago or did i see it as a kid and just remember that um human mind what a wonderful horrible thing um here's a shopless shoplifting only losers play [Music] if you think shoplifting is a kid's game you'd better think again anytime someone takes something from a store without paying for it they've committed a crime and no matter what age the person is or how big or small the item's stolen that person will be treated as a thief [Music] oh come on carl don't be a chicken i'm not a chicken i just don't want it oh yeah sure you're just scared little old scaredy-pants call afraid to take some candy big deal nobody will miss it nobody will care besides it's just some candy well if you're so cool why don't you take it i've done it lots of times look we'll both take some if you're too scared to do something this easy you ought to go play with the little kids or go home and cry to your have a son named carl allen williams yes i do yes ma'am well i'm with store security and we've just apprehended your son with his friend for shoplifting and i'm afraid you're gonna have to come down here oh come on a chicken boy things sure are different since kathy moved away we sure did a lot together good old kathy she sure knew how to have fun oh well because i'll have to think of something else to do hmm maybe i could buy something really neat like these bracelets get one for kathy too but they're too expensive they're really small though i bet yeah no one will notice i can just slip them into my pocket nobody's around this is easy i won't get caught if i just walk out of the store [Music] mr edwards mr edwards oh yes i am i am i took these bracelets without paying for me i'll be glad to give them back or or give you your money back i just i'm so disappointed in my daughter mr edwards she's never done anything like this before i'm so sorry i'll never do it again well i certainly hope not young lady normally it's our policy to turn shoplifters over to the police but since you did come in on your own and you seem to realize the seriousness of your act i guess i can work with you this time i'm so sorry i didn't i just wasn't thinking a lot of people think that taking something from a store isn't a big crime because what they take won't be missed that's just not true i had to pay for these bracelets no one gave me this merchandise i had to pay for everything in here yes sir you took something that belonged to me what if i took your ring what i guess i'd be pretty upset you remember that the next time you're tempted to take something without paying for it there won't be a next time i won't get caught if i just walk out of the store brad i've been through this with you before you just don't seem to learn we give you a big enough allowance so you can buy the special things you want but dad no buts brad i'm not giving you the extra money to buy that game if you'd saved your allowance instead of spending it the minute you got it then you would have the money to buy the game it's all part of growing up son learning that sometimes you have to do without because you're saving your money for more important things if you really want that game brad then you'll start saving your money thanks a lot dad if it was sally you'd give her the money that's just not true brad your sister gets an allowance the same as you do but she knows how to manage her money and we expect you to learn the same sure dad okay i can handle it just try harder brad i don't need the money i'll just take it and no one will know [Music] hey brad i've never been more disappointed in you in my life wait till your mother finds out this will break her heart we both had more faith than you how could you do this to yourself and us i thought you knew better instead of saving your allowance you thought you could take the easy way out and just steal what you wanted well listen mister you will pay for this action you're grounded for the next month and you'll earn every penny of your allowance by staying home and working around the house [Music] oh wow i've been wanting one of these for a long time it'd be perfect for my collection oh well i can't buy it today i don't have enough money guess i'll put it back but it's the only one left what if someone else buys it before i get the money there may not be any more what if just this time i i take it i've never done anything like that before but this time is special i know i wouldn't do it again and and no one is even around to see me nobody will find out [Music] did you hear about lisa yes she got caught stealing from a store boy did she get in a lot of trouble what did she feel it was only a glass animal she could have gotten the money for it why did she steal it who knows she probably likes to steal things boy that's where i'm gonna watch my stuff when she's around you and everyone else the whole school knows about it some kids are calling her lisa the steeler gosh i would have never thought that about her nobody will find out [Music] before you decide to shoplift remember this shoplifting is not a kids game shoplifting is a serious crime it's your decision and it's you who'll have to live with the guilt and the consequences i knew there was a southern twang there to everybody's voice uh which means that this uh uh was made by walter j klein's company which was based in charlotte north carolina and which meant it was probably shot somewhere in north carolina maybe around charlotte um and um i met walter j klein uh he's probably passed now but um really a nice interesting guy who started a company that did advertising and filmmaking and mostly made sponsored films so he would basically come up with a concept for a film he would shop it around to different uh companies who were looking to sponsor things so like charms blowpop excuse me charms blow pops or uh i think merida bread um there's a variety of different uh places then they would bankroll it uh and then he would sell it to schools and tv stations um and that's how they made money so this was obviously paid for with a grant and he did in conjunction with other people but i love the uh the little internal narratives that kids those those moral dilemmas the kids are having about uh stealing um uh so thank you to william for some coffee uh and pointed out that the uh magic sneakers film was because of too too much lds in the 60s which probably referred to also the man's search for happiness film made by the lds folks and then scrappy rat really hated the girl with esp um and yet still gave me coffee so thank you i don't know what type of lesson you're you're uh you're teaching me by rewarding me for um horrible 1970s uh television but um i'm glad that it affected you in such a negative way that you you felt like you had to reward me so thanks for that um and thanks everybody for tuning in today uh some people asked because i was moving furniture did i suffer ill effects from that and uh yeah i'm a little sore but you know it could have been worse i could have been moving today which is really disgusting outside i hope that those of you that are in the northeast are uh safely uh bundled in and not having to travel and deal with uh the insanity of um winter snow um but we'll be back tomorrow uh one o'clock and we'll show you some more films that you're gonna love and you're gonna hate and you're gonna scratch your head and say like i don't quite understand why that film exists but um
