all right um so uh i'm skip alzheimer welcome to uh av geeks lunchtime streaming show that was a film strip i have many film strips that i have gotten over the years thousands and traditionally what i do is i when i do a live show i actually bring a filmstrip projector and we start off the show with a film script for the audience reads and we go around the room and everybody reads and we all practice our reading out loud chops and you know every once in a while a film strip that i show because i don't really screen them before uh a lot of them it's the first time i've seen them sometimes the film strip is actually better than the show i've said this before film strip just knocks everybody on their butt that's how good it is and i'm just like i don't know if i want to show the rest of the films i have because this this is it's not going to get any better than this so um yeah i you know i didn't intend to collect film strips but they would often come with uh the 16 millimeter films and so i would say like sure i'll take them on and over the years i have gotten more and more more so um yeah there you go so uh so happy you guys join us today um today is i i broke down and started reading headlines and social media and i got a little frenzied so this is a welcome break for me as well as i hope it is for you to kind of just focus on something totally not current event related uh so this first film we're gonna watch um it's an odd film um it is uh i can't remember if this is a promotional film for a hawaii tourism or for an airline um but it's it starts off very odd so here is highlights of hawaiian history enjoy good afternoon or even conceivably good morning please choose the appropriate greeting because so many of you have expressed an interest in the culture of hawaii my lecture today is entitled highlights of hawaiian history let's begin the first important event in hawaiian history was the discovery of the islands by captain james cook on january 18 1778 captain cook was so overjoyed at making it there at the height of the tourist season he wanted to do something nice for the local residents so he gave a banquet and really threw himself into it he thought this was a great way to make himself a part of the community the next important event in hawaii was the coming of the missionaries led as you recall by julie andrews this event while well received was not as big a hit as mary poppins but it did give us moo moos which you will be seeing from time to time in my talk anyhow one of the most exciting events in hawaiian history came on july 25 1969 when western airlines began flying to hawaii from many cities on the mainland now i can hear some of you muttering that i've left out certain things like hawaii becoming a state and so on but after all i said i'd only concentrate on the highlights now the reason it's so important that western airlines started flying to hawaii is because western introduced islander service and there'd never been anything quite like it in the sky before in fact it's such an important landmark or air mark i'm going to devote the rest of my lecture to describing an island or flight in detail specifically a flight i took recently as great as my drawings are i'm afraid they can't do justice to all of the features of the islander so from time to time i'm going to show you some pictures i took with a camera i cleverly concealed in my lapel little trick i learned from mission impossible my trip to hawaii started on a typical average day well that's not really exactly true it started on a typical average friday and every friday as you may know is aloha day throughout the western airlines system and on aloha day many western employees wear either an aloha shirt or a moomoo and they really give you a festive feeling so your vacation starts in the terminal before you even leave in fact it actually started before i entered the terminal right here with the skycap who greeted me at my car and checked my baggage in at the curb the baggage tag alone gives you a clue that it's no ordinary flight you're taking inside i spotted the first moo moo i mean it spotted me this helpful girl is the ground hostess who directed me to an aloha shirt an aloha shirt wrapped around the gate agent he took care of all the paperwork check me in and let me select my seat i knew i was at the right gate because there was a giant pylon with the islander symbol on top one step past the pylon and i was in another world hawaii at least it sounded that way as authentic hawaiian music serenaded me on the way to the plane seems as though i can still hear it and look what the music leads to now this is what i call a welcome five beautiful stewardesses in four beautiful mini moo moos you probably noticed the fifth moo moo the long one the girl wearing it doesn't have it on because she's shy it's because she's the executive hostess the long moomoo helps you spot her at the beginning but you won't have any trouble finding her during the flight she seems to be all over serving answering questions helping [Music] advising and generally seeing to all your special travel needs now she doesn't come by all of her knowledge lightly the executive hostess gets special training for her job some of it pretty unique for example she's had courses on the historic and cultural attractions of hawaii she knows which shops hotels and restaurants might appeal to you and since she may serve you your wine she's even gone on a fact-finding tour of a leading california winery one of her first duties is to present a beautiful orchid corsage to every female passenger in first class with the compliments of western airlines to make certain every hawaii bound passenger knows he's on the right plane the symbol of the islander is all over the place you'll see it on match books headrests napkins glasses beverage stirrers reserved seat cards slipper socks and lots of places one of the places the symbol appears that really gets a lot of attention is the menu this is passed out before takeoff and the only problem with it is that the sound of so many lips smacking in unison often drowns out the engines in flight there's an air of expectancy as the stewardess prepares the exotic potion known as islander champagne punch it has a sort of volcanic effect it's a sparkling libation garnished with tropical fruits the islander punch comes down the aisle on an orchid laden cart and is served in handsome stem glasses to all passengers throughout the plane first class coach and economy [Music] and now things really begin to happen in first class happy hour or hours as the case may be includes your choice of a complete beverage selection one of the specialties of the house is an authentic mai tai served in a bamboo mug complete with its own umbrella even though it never rains inside the plane a tasty accompaniment is hawaii's famous macadamia nuts and for those who prefer a selection of soft drinks and fruit juices including pineapple juice of course now it's time to really get on with the feast so to help you prepare the stewardesses bring around perfumed hot towels okay now that we're all freshened up what next poo poos now this may be a little hard to believe but poo poo is a real hawaiian word that means delicious little appetizers and scrumptious they are hot and tasty little rumaki bacon wrapped chicken liver with water chestnuts shrimp balls egg roll and crab rangoon wonton filled with crab meat and cream cheese next course senegalese soup served with a special coconut curry garnish followed by the islander salad with special honey lime dressing from the cart you may choose banana bread sourdough roll french roll or croissant at this time you select wine or champagne to go with your entree first class passengers have a choice of five entrees just take a look tahitian lamb chops roast of tenderloin polynesian pineapple duck hawaiian grilled new york steak or loin of pork do kahanamoku the succulent roast is served from the cart cooked to order and carved before your very eyes accompanied by chinese vegetables and orange flavored rice ready for your next course oh yes there's lots more let's start with dessert part one fantasia aloha tort your choice of coffee tea or milk not ordinary coffee kona coffee the way the hawaiians like it served up in a special kona coffee glass on the second cart fortune cookies mine said you are about to take a long journey and almond cookies and a liqueur finale passionfruit liquor cognac granbuy b and b and gran marnier there will now be a slight pause for you to loosen your belt another notch then another refreshing hot towel is served while all of this whining and dining has been going on in first class what has been happening in coach well first of all let's look at what western has done to the coach section itself they've changed it from ordinary coach into deluxe coach better than anything else flying to hawaii first they took the seats and stretched them out so now there's first class leg room throughout coach and economy then they invented a combination arm rest and table that fits in the middle seat of every coach row it's called the aloha table except when the plane is full this unique invention creates two plus two seating in western's deluxe coach with space as wide as first class now that's a lot of luxury in first class comfort at coach fair but it just barely scratches the surface of western's deluxe coach just look after the free islander champagne punch coach passengers have their own happy hour with a wide selection of cocktails available at nominal cost then they have a choice of three luscious entrees steak teriyaki pork loin oahu and two princess chicken no not two chickens two princesses [Music] each entree is served on china and is accompanied by salad with honey lime dressing chinese vegetables and fried rice dessert is a tasty aloha fruit squares plus kona coffee chinese tea and milk [Music] throughout this sumptuous repast the executive hostess is on hand to see that everything is the way you like it what more could you ask good food good wine deluxe comfort and pleasant company after dinner there's a selection of liquors to add a distinctive touch to your meal this is the first coach service that can truly be called deluxe meanwhile the economy passenger isn't the forgotten man or forgotten woman as the case may be if you're saving with western special economy fair you still receive the sparkling islander champagne bunch and you still have all the comfort of first class leg room what's more there's a festive islander picnic basket available for one dollar and what a picnic french rolls slices of italian salami and gouda cheese almond roca candy the stewardess supplies lettuce and garnishes from the car and beverages include coffee tea or milk and a split of christian brothers burgundy or rose wine is available for just 50 cents more passengers in economy can purchase cocktails and liqueurs too if they wish just about when the dinner dishes are cleared away it's time to find out who won the captain's halfway sweepstakes this is a contest that can turn you into an expert navigator early in the flight the captain gives all passengers the pertinent data like cruising speed wind velocity and so on all you have to do is figure out when the islander will reach the halfway point of its flight if you want some sage advice from a winner do as i did just guess it's fun and there are some nice prizes for those who come closest now what more could you expect after this great service luscious food and fun and games why a first run movie of course on a wide screen rather on three wide screens throughout the cabin and for those first-class passengers who don't care to watch the movie but love beautiful music western has created a unique stereo center with the most advanced stereo system in the air including the earmuff type of headset that stereo buffs prefer it all adds up to the finest most complete and by far the most comfortable service from here to hawaii it's actually a vacation in the air even before your vacation in the islands and just what is it that awaits you at the end of this fabulous voyage paradise it would take me several hours to do justice to it so let me just wet your appetite [Music] [Music] so [Music] my and now how about you isn't it time you got aboard western's islander to hawaii for your own preview of paradise [Music] aloha [Music] so [Music] [Music] wow that was fascinating i uh i'm very excited to find this film because um i'm actually going to be doing a show later this month at the houston air terminal museum which is a if you ever fly into houston or if you ever flew into houston and you flew into where southwest flies into the uh hobby i think it's called if you look beyond the uh landing strips and all that you'll see a little tiny what used to be the airport the houston airport and that's been turned into a museum uh and it kind of shows uh they show off old uh commercial flight memorabilia uh airline hostess uh costumes costumes uniforms um and i've done screenings there uh back in the day uh they flew me in once and i went and i did a screening i showed a bunch of films that show old how it used to be to fly uh because a lot of people that actually attend that are actually part of the industry and they're retired so there's captains and navigators and air hostesses and all those people so they come to this somebody actually flew in in their private plane to actually see the show it was really great so i'm going to do a virtual version of this it's a paid event and i'll advertise it more when i get closer but um anyways that's i gotta share that one it's so good because man you think about like most of us uh riding on a greyhound bus in the sky getting a little tiny bag of uh pretzels and you know having to pay you know a bunch of money for a bat a bag of m m's and peanuts and stuff like that it's a phenomenal difference obviously um and i like that this goes through the whole process i wasn't sure originally if this was made for people who want they want to fly western airlines or if it was made for the staff because it seems like it's a little bit for the staff that's saying like this is what you're going to do this is how you're going to accommodate your guests but i don't i'm not sure but phenomenal nonetheless it answers a lot of questions on how we used to fly uh and you know back when people wore suit and ties and gloves and you know it was not a bunch of t-shirts t-shirted yokels who refused to wear masks wear a mask by the way if you're out in public wear a mask um anyways uh thanks people for donating for coffee it's always a great way to help baby geeks by keeping them caffeinated i caffeinate myself responsibly and i try not to have coffee past a certain point so that i won't have anxious night tears like i used to back in the day um anyways uh lots of lots of questions out there and this one is an important one answered to us by john davidson some of you who grew up in the 70s and early 80s might remember john davidson he appeared on i think he had his own variety show maybe but he also appeared on he was a i guess a host on hollywood squares uh later in the day uh and he was on real people no no no no no no no that's incredible that's incredible so here's john davidson answering the question is that a happy [Music] hippopotamus [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] i found a fun book that i think you might enjoy today it's about animals i love animals i hope you do it also has in it some some fun words kind of tongue twisters that are fun to say it's called is that a happy hippopotamus there's thumping bumping banging clanging they're smashing and crashing all over the place it sounds as if someone has let loose a whole load of animals could that be a happy hippopotamus hopping heavily in the hall is that a llama lugging logs around the living room or a dinosaur dancing on his dessert in the dining room it might be a slow sloth stumbling sleepily upstairs or a kangaroo kicking kettles in the kitchen perhaps it's a panda pounding a piano in the pantry or a bear a big blundering black bear bumbling around in the bedroom or a baboon beating a bass drum in the bathtub listen can you hear a camel crunching crumbs in the closet or an angry aardvark arranging antiques in the attic would that be a warthog walloping whitewash all over the workshop or a grouchy goat grinding gravel in the garage is that really a rhinoceros rampaging across the roof or a yak yelling loudly in the yard is it no it isn't any of them it isn't a hopping hippopotamus or a log-lugging llama or a dancing dinosaur or a stumbling sloth or a kettle kicking kangaroo or a piano pounding panda or a blundering black bear or a drum beating baboon or a crumb crunching camel or an angry aardvark or a walloping warthog or a grouchy goat or a rampaging rhinoceros or a loudly yowling yak no it's really someone else who's raising enough racket and rumpus for all the rest it's someone we all know called you [Music] [Music] um i have a couple of films in that series of uh celebrities reading various books um i should bust more of those out they were kind of fun i mean they're different than the iconographic only that you have these shots of the actor or celebrity reading um i think harry belafonte is one of them um uh victor the guy that goes the musician what's his name victor bolano i don't think that's right victor borgia so he reads one um and there's more there's more of these kind of late 60s early 70s celebrities um but yeah it's nice i like it uh this next film is a um i think this won an academy award for best short and i'm not sure what year but it's it's pretty great it's called up and i think i actually have another film called the making of up and you'll see why the documentary is probably just as interesting as the film itself because there are some shots in here you're like hmm how did they get that so here we go here's up [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] gonna be okay yeah that's good you're gonna make it you can do it okay it's your turn now [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] here [Music] [Music] so [Music] um [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] wow [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] so you know that was pretty good right and i was totally wrong i was thinking like there's scenes in there that look like they were rotoscoped for heavy metal in the movie and somebody was like well metal came out in 85 and this came out or 81 and this came out in 85 so i don't know still it i think it's it's common i don't know there's there's some comparisons there and i should really go and see if i can find it's the last sequence in heavy metal where the tarakian is flying the woman is flying through canyons and it seems that there's some common landscape it could be that's just a picturesque place that people like to go and fly um hang gliding and helicopters and then so that's just common footage that you see it's like monument valley um everybody's shot in monument valley um anyways fascinating film love it um all right uh one last film before we call it a weekend uh this one is part of those uh coronet films that ask questions about love and usually like i said if it asks a question the answer is no this is when it doesn't totally work it's uh how do you know it's love and maybe the answer is you don't but this actually gives you pointers so here we go it's one of these ones that it transitions it's a transition so there's going steady question mark there's are you ready for marriage it's all these films that are like you're on the brink you're like out of high school and you're kind of a young adult or you're almost out of high school and you're starting to get serious and the powers that be your parents don't want you to settle for the first person that you that you hook up with hooking up being dating um because we know that that's just not going to work that love at first sight doesn't generally work um so these films are all trying to get kids to like back off and you know play the field and meet lots of people because you know if you date lots of people one you have like a bunch of first date awkward first dates there's not that chance you're going to go beyond a peck on the cheek or a hug or handshake that you're not gonna start dabbling uh into uh heavy petting etc but the other part of it is that you meet lots of personalities and you know hopefully you can find someone that meshes with your personalities or with your religion as should i marry outside of my faith mentions so how do you know it's love [Music] i love you nora do you love me oh i don't know jeff you're the only girl i've dated in two months we get along fine you do love me don't you i think so but i'll have to think about it [Music] hello dear mama have a nice time i'll say jack's awfully handsome such a smooth dancer mom how can i tell if i mean how did you know when you were in love with dad oh i've been in love several times before i got so i could recognize the symptoms several times and each time i thought i found my prince charming most fall in love quite a few times in their lives well then how can you tell when you're really in love well i'll have to think about that let's save it for tomorrow shall we good night good night there most people fall in love quite a few times jack knows that i tell you bob i haven't dated any girl but nora in two months we're really in love uh huh and you were really in love with betty and mary and dallas and i don't know who else and there'll be others i suppose oh no that's over with you know bob norah is the prettiest girl i've ever known she's just as beautiful as beautiful and you think that's all that matters oh hurry up and get in bed will you bob did you feel this way when you fell in love with gene oh look i've felt that way lots of times the trouble with you is you don't seem to understand what love is really about you young punks go to the movies a couple of times do a little necking and you think you're in love i've never seen anything like it all i wanted to do is ask you don't have to get sore about it do you i'm i'm sorry jack but but look at it this way you just haven't been around enough to know what love really is believe me it's nothing like the slush they give you in the movies well i don't know mom that's right you don't know maybe you would understand better say i've got an idea how'd you like to double date with gina me tomorrow night why sure bob that would be swell sure you wouldn't mind not if you let me get some sleep now good night good night oh jack that sounds like loads of fun see you tonight goodbye guess what mother jack and i are going on a double date with jack's brother bob and his girlfriend they're engaged in so much long genie has the most beautiful diamond oh that's fine there i've met bob i think he's awfully nice i do too and speaking of love weren't you and i going to talk about that today yes we were i've been thinking about your question and well suppose we look at these snapshots together snapshot mm-hmm well what do they have to do with love oh i was just thinking that they might help you to understand how your capacity for love grows and develops just as you grow and develop here look at this one oh mother did you have to keep that you know in a way you were in love even then every baby loves its parents for their care and protection of course some people expect that care and protection all their lives they never grow up but it is a kind of love now compare that with this picture oh that's the boy who used to live next door my how he did love his teddy bear love that's right that's a kind of love too possessiveness a love for the things you own some of us never get over being possessive when we're in love do we you're beginning to understand now here's a snap that shows how we learn to return love by doing things for others well what about love of our friends isn't that a stage of love yes i think it is here look at this boy that's betty and ellen and ann i took that picture with my first camera oh i know there was a time when i wouldn't look at anyone but my special friends i guess that was a stage of love yes and boys go through a similar stage when they stick together in gangs and won't have anything to do with girls we soon change that now let's see oh do you remember this picture the captain of the football team that was two or three years ago he never knew how much i loved him i guess he never knew i existed at all well we all go through crashes like that on teachers or sports stars or movie stars then after a while there's a stage that some people call puppy love when if morris i'd almost completely forgot remember how important it seemed at the time i'll say and it really was important as a part of learning how to love and be loved i think i can tell puppy though oh look there's the couple who met at camp last summer i certainly caught them yes and that's another stage where the physical side of love dominates sometimes this is mistaken for mature love but there's a difference mature love that's a new way of thinking about it how can you tell when love is mature well mature love is more special mature love has something of the other kind of love in it and something more it's tender unselfish cooperative when i get serious about somebody mom i want to have that kind of love that's a good idea dear and if you aren't sure you can always ask yourself some questions are we really interested in the same things do we feel at ease together are we proud of each other do we agree on the basic things such as religion marriage children money and so on thanks mother i know that'll help i hope so dear are we really interested in the same things do we feel at ease together are we proud of each other are we agreed on basic things i wonder i'm going to watch bob and gene see if they have a mature love we've been here for quite some time thank you oh i'm having a wonderful time i've never been here before oh we're so glad you could come this is one of our favorite spots yes we sort of found it together you might say and we come here quite often oh the real chinese dishes are over here thanks bob oh bob look what came today what oh the season tickets for our concert series and guess what you're going to have to sit through another concert by that young french pianist who didn't like you mean the same one we saw last season that's right maybe this year you'll agree with me that he has real talent well maybe but only if he's improved oh bob well at least we'll have fun debating it do bob and jean have a mature love are they interested in the same thing i'll say they are they seem to have so many they talk about and do together say nora talking about music have you heard the new recording of the bronze violin concerto well no i i guess i never really learned to appreciate classical music are jack and i interested in the same thing i wonder another question my man do we feel at ease with each other you know there's no telling what we'll get but i'm wanting to take a chance if you are oh that's the fun of it bob what about some of this watercress salad that's a fine idea bob and jean certainly are at ease with each other but what about us i made up my mind i'm going to have the leg of lamb oh well i thought it would be fun to try a chinese dish that's all right if you like that stuff me i'll stick to the lamb well oh come on norah take a chance with us on the lobster cantonese oh i'd like that no i don't always feel at ease with jack he's so unpredictable i guess i am too we don't really know each other and mom talks about being proud of each other i wonder if i could ever be as proud of jack as genius as bob not right here and now maybe but he does have his points when he gets on that ball diamond anybody would be proud of him but i wonder if we'd ever agree on basic things jack you know who i saw today i saw bill johnson on this one you know they've got a fine pair of little kids they dress them up like cowboys kids are such fun don't you think so norah well i oh here's a waiter with our soup children oh we've never talked about things like that or religion or marriage or money bob and gene really understand each other they do have a mature loan in the garden you know well i i guess after seeing bob and jean well i think that love a real mature love is more than i'd imagine i guess so i'm bob and jean it looks all right but we're not ready for that kind of attachment are we but we can still have a lot of fun can't we sure we can would you like how about going roller skating next friday night oh jack that's a wonderful idea that's the kind of fun i like what time about 8 15. well i'll see you then thanks for this evening good night good night [Music] she's a dud leave her dud um yeah so that relationship's not going to work out so the answer is uh you know am i in love no you're not not really not really um yeah so thanks everybody for tuning in today uh lisa thank you for the coffee it is always a great way to support av geeks is by buying us little beans magic beans that we grind up and we run hot water through it and um drink it and have visions um thank you for that um also thanks everybody for liking and subscribing and following and blah blah blah it's friday i'm going to take two days off um and yeah i hope everybody has a good weekend i hope everybody has a restful weekend give yourself a break and take maybe a little bit more time and don't read social media and don't read the headlines you know check in periodically but give yourself your eyes and your brain a little bit of a break um i've been watching old episodes of the rockford file and that has been soothing uh the pacing of it is so great just kind of slows my life down rockford is always getting beat up by thugs always two thugs um that are following him always a car chase um there's some great things about that show uh very much enjoy it so you know give yourself that time to to kind of not be looking at headlines and stuff um and uh we'll see you on monday that is the plan um and everybody have a great weekend um coffee here if you want to give us coffee av geeks is a dot com has lots of previous episodes and lots of other films that we've uploaded over the last 10 years or so and also the opportunity to buy stuff on dvd um so thanks again so much for your time and your comments it's always great to spend this time with you so i really look forward to it and relish this time so you guys take care of yourself um you know we look inside the film can for advice and it tells us to love each other and to please rewind not every film can has this sometimes they don't want you to rewind at all um and certainly many of them don't tell us to love each other but some bored student wrote this in here and it made me very happy so everybody take care and we will see you again soon bye-bye three eight seven six five four three
