[Music] i love that family um it shows up in several film strips that i have um steve and babs and dick um yeah there's a there's a really good one brothers and sisters which i probably have shown on here uh but anyways it's funny i was just thinking about what a pain it was to actually digitize the film strips and hold on sorry to digitize the film strips and so basically what i did is i used a scanner that feeds 35 millimeter slowly and into photoshop clipped out the individual frames color corrected them then i went back into some program to animate so that it made it look like it was actually uh you know like a film strip and i realized now i could have just like put it on a wall and just shot it with a camera then just done it that way maybe i'll do that in the future and see how that works i have this screen behind me so i can do that anyways i'm skip alzheimer welcome to our lunchtime streaming show um geek streaming show where we show old 16 millimeter and 35 millimeter uh film strips uh and some of them we show live some of them have been pre digitized um yeah the next film that we're going to watch is actually live it's on telecity right here and this one is a cornet film that was made in the 70s and it's a remake of previous things called taking care of things and this one i feel like i've seen it before but i feel like it has a supernatural element to it which a lot of the 70s films do because in the 50s they weren't competing with television so much but kids were so overwhelmed with fast-paced editing and compelling stories excuse me um in the 70s because of television movies the educational filmmakers had to bump it up a little bit and try to keep the interest uh i think also filmmakers were wanted to make things that were compelling so this is uh taking care of things that you share once there was a little girl named isabelle who was a delightful little girl she loved to listen to music and took very good care of her records in fact isabelle took very good care of everything that belonged to her [Music] isabelle thought of everything yes that too at school too she took care of her own things but as for the things that didn't belong to her like the school desk well that was another story and the things she shared with the class she didn't take very good care of them either for instance the pace jar hey this place is all right i'll pull up the top off of it isabelle isabelle do you know anything about that paste i don't know her teacher wasn't very happy with her isabelle and neither was the librarian and what made people unhappy with isabel at school also made them unhappy at the community center she never never took care of things that didn't belong to her isabelle that's our new soccer ball be sure to bring that back when you throw okay [Music] at home isabel wasn't any different if she was playing records that weren't hers would she think of putting them away when she started doing something else wait a minute chris hey chris can i use your speedboard until dad fixes mine okay but don't you dare leave it outside [Music] sometimes she left a record on top of the amplifier which gets very hot [Music] and while isabel was having fun on her brother's skateboard she ruined so many records and when she came home her thoughtlessness often caused her brother to be very unhappy isabelle her mother was unhappy too well on this particular day like many others isabel had caused a lot of people to be unhappy and that night some very strange things started to happen [Music] [Music] [Music] it was she just dreaming or were these things really happening she didn't know she knew that everything seemed very strange and it was time to go to school she remembered about the puppet it belonged to a girl at school the girl had bought it for all the children to share and then she let isabelle take it home it wasn't isabelle's so of course she didn't take care of it hi susan hi isabelle i brought your puppet back oh good what'd you do to it it's all messed up i don't know i just played with it you ruined it and then as she was walking away something strange started to happen she heard all those funny voices she started spinning around and around and isabelle started changing around and around until isabelle became the girl the messed up puppet was hers now she didn't like having a messed up puppet and then around and around isabelle was herself again but funny she still felt unhappy she still remembered feeling as if the ruined puppet was really her own she knew how the girl felt uh oh looks like more trouble no why that's right isabelle had forgotten to clean the brushes and she didn't put the lids on the paint jars the last time she used them and then it happened again round and round now isabel was the one who had to use the dried up painted brushes isabelle didn't like that at all [Music] after she became herself again she still remembered that awful feeling it wasn't fun using spoiled things and at the library hey isabelle where's that book here reading let me ask about fairy tales um let me see here it is what'd you do it's all dirty i don't know i just read it now isabel had the messy book isabelle had changed into a lot of people now she knew how bad everyone felt when they had to use things that she hadn't taken care of and later at the community center she was really worried she didn't like using things she hadn't taken care of and there were lots of them here lots of people were unhappy with isabel and now isabelle was finding out how bad all of them felt isabel sure didn't like that [Music] isabel thought at last it was over but those sad feelings they just lasted and lasted they lasted until she got home and they didn't stop there [Music] now she knew how unhappy she had made her brother feel and her mother too things got stranger and stranger she kept spinning around and around until [Music] was it really morning now had all that been a dream isabelle didn't really care now she really knew how bad other people felt because of the things she did she realized how important it was to care for the things she shared with other people and she wanted to show all those people that she had made unhappy that she was going to change and she did too [Music] she stopped making other people unhappy and she found out that it wasn't so hard to take care of the things she had to share with others it was just as easy as taking care of her own things everybody was happy with isabel now and making people happy made isabel feel very good [Music] so isabelle was possessed by spirits of people that she wronged um has a little bit of a christmas carol vibe to it but uh i think the fact that she is being haunted by these things is uh it's really kind of fascinating uh and this shows up a lot uh in the 70s i did a show called the haunted classroom which all deals with ghosts who haunt different kids to teach them different things um uh ghostwriter was one of those of course we had the person who actually was in the film kind of co-host that show but uh yeah i uh i it's it's really interesting that it kind of goes in that direction in the 70s and 80s um whereas in the 50s and early 60s it was pretty just straightforward like imagine how you would feel if somebody borrowed your stuff and wrecked it um it had to kind of tweak it a little bit um so yesterday i showed a film from uh the paul and elizabeth nelson's collection uh they do screenings uh under or they did screenings under the name cinema beaumar in houston um they're good friends and i've been digitizing stuff for them this is another film from their collection um that it just really struck me that's really great it's called chatterbug [Music] [Music] so [Music] your careless talk can give the enemy valuable details of information details fragments odd bits and pieces which he can string together into a complete pattern of our plans [Music] you may think you can trust the person you're talking to a close relation a lifelong friend but you never know whether he or she will pass it on you never know until it's too late and just as you have trusted them they may trust someone else one by one they pass it on before you realize what's happened your scrap of information has become common gossip next please sooner or later your news will reach an enemy agent and who's to blame all the loose mouth careless fools who talked and more particularly you [Music] don't think that careless talk only comes from the fellow who can't hold his drink and his tongue at the same time it comes from all sorts of people in all sorts of places reggie's taking you to the dance for the town hall saturday that's what he thinks you know i hear quite a lot when i'm driving a major about only yesterday i heard him tell captain brown that we'll be moving before then overseas at bet wasn't the raid terrific last night i never heard at a noise and did you hear the new bomb the kind of crackles instead of ganging that's hitler's new weapon of course it's terribly secret but my husband's in the home guard so naturally he knows all about it oh god well you can tell him from the army that that bombs our new ac gun it don't fire a normal shot at all it throws a well it's uh it's got a case in and um they seem to be terribly overworked that the because they are ducks surely you know why mrs smith's boy is a dick got two and he says they are refitting the 20th army for overseas is your lovely jimmy so that's what it is my husband always said if only had a chance of talking to general sometimes you yourself are so familiar with the information that you imagine there's nothing secret about it at all yes but in my experience these hallway sets are always defective on one wavelength now take a number everyday knowledge to him but it may be news to the enemy [Music] and take another case the times when you don't realize that your information has any real military value at all well as it happens i can let you have a first house the colonel's just made us all go and have new ones taken passport size of course he's crazy we've all got perfectly good while doing our two six sixes already but he doesn't seem very important does it but the enemy may know even if you don't that these new photographs mean that your unit is going overseas shortly these rules all apply while you're still at home but they apply even more when you go overseas when you're overseas careless talk becomes even more dangerous the nearer you are to the enemy the quicker the information can reach him and the better use he can make of it and fall in service wherever it may be brings two new points to watch first don't trust too much to the friendliness of the native population even though they welcome you with open arms do you remember the cordial welcome our troops received when they entered [Music] benghazi now see how the same people welcomed the hun a few months later ready apparently to cheer all comers the second point is even more important don't imagine that foreigners can't understand english just because they show no signs of doing so overseas too there's always a tendency to relax when you're behind the lines a feeling that you're miles away from the enemy and that no one who matters can hear what you say don't you believe it it's still careless talk and it's still dangerous you know we should have been in a hell of a mess if the navy hadn't come along you weren't holding the face very strongly were you strongly we only had a company and a heart you know that sector always has been very lightly held lord knows what will happen if the hun attacks again but still maybe he thinks we are stronger than we are there's another time when you're liable to relax and that is when you are wounded but once again remember foreigners may understand english even though they don't appear to nazdar jackson and the same to you top she knows what you mean corpse you can see it in your eye that's why she's leaving you reminds me of my dear old granny all the same i bet some of the boys up the line could do with a few extra bags like this and a bit of homework together they can build up into a massive information and tell the enemy exactly what he wants to know there's only one safe way to keep a secret wherever you are keep your mouth shut so obviously that was british made and then redistributed by the army signal court um because chatterbug doesn't seem like an american thing uh but there's other there's a whole series of uh private snafu um cartoons uh made by some of the key people of um that made looney tunes cartoons and they uh it's animated and they have one that's like that as well basically snafu blabs gets all these people in trouble um all right so uh this next film i haven't seen i have no idea uh what it's about um it could be really fascinating it could be i don't know um it's corbett sharp house so let's watch it and see see what it is [Music] throughout the 18th century and into the 19th a community once known as cantwell's bridge grew up and prospered on the abundant lands of northern delaware on the travel routes to philadelphia merchants and men of means built their homes a pocket of the past that lives today has odessa delaware it remembers its quaker heritage in the cemetery and meeting house a place preserved not as a museum but a country town [Applause] [Music] so in 1772 a man named william corbett who had been trained as a tanner but for the tastes of a gentleman built the finest house in what was then known as the lower counties of pennsylvania he built his home on the apple quinamink creek a day down river from philadelphia um from the west indies in china from england and the lower counties came the sailing ships with goods and grain and people to add to the growing power of philadelphia during america's formative years [Music] [Applause] shopkeeper to a continent commercial rival of new york philadelphia well into the mid-1800s was all things to these new americans their economic and social center the seat of their highest culture [Music] supplied with the world's products the city returned to her satellite communities a world of goods and ideas that flowed along the vital water route to the lower pennsylvania counties now delaware on its way to the sea the delaware river receives many streams and tributaries one of them running through the most productive farmland of the eastern seaboard the apple quinaminc creek which in the early 1800s carried as many as 400 000 bushels of wheat a year to the great market upriver [Music] so along the apocanomic where pirates once stalked the busy traffic the rich farms yielded harvest upon harvest until all surrounding lands had been developed until the substantial farmhouses had been built [Applause] [Music] oats barley flaxseed and delaware corn and wheat of uncommon quality very favorable said a foreign visitor to the manufacture of a super fine flour [Music] foreign to this place william corbett's his apprenticeship and training in philadelphia ended return to establish a tannery and with stone from chester hinges and screws from wilmington hardware from philadelphia he built a city house on the rolling land beside the apple criminal in the house of william corbett maybe found the story of a relationship between a country town on the tidewaters of delaware bay and the colonial metropolis to the north a story ended by the transformation of odessa from grain capital to quiet village and with it the slow decline of the georgian mansion in 1938 h rodney sharp recognizing beauty and dignity beneath the changes of the years restored the builder's lines and made the corbett house whole again today the house is a museum most of its 18th century furniture acquired by mr sharp from within a radius of a hundred miles such as this chippendale chest of drawers by john jamvier the town cabinet maker [Music] [Applause] this house on the app equinement its brick shutters and white painted trim it's exquisite woodwork [Music] the roof deck the look of elegant neatness reflects the taste of william corbett and the architecture of the georgian period in which he lived he built his home before he was 30 and in it his 13 children were reared during a trip to philadelphia he wrote to his eldest son pennell i expect to be down with you next week tell william that he is deficient in writing as i expected by affectionate father in a monument of 18th century america the visitor walks away of a family's home built on a human scale the subtleties of period of ornament the special significance of design seemed to vanish and things just belong but corbett was a man of many interests is suggested in every room in books [Music] john sweeney curator of the winter tour museum has written in a man's house is mirrored the man himself and in a corbett house is to be found not only the story of william corbett but the entire scope of his activities in an age of impeccable craftsmanship not even the china closet scarlet shells were overlooked [Music] among the queen anne chippendale and federal pieces there is this clock made by corbett's neighbor duncan beard [Music] in this historic place the time returns often to count the masters days in his own words i have it much at heart that these should be enabled by a tolerable share of plain education to become qualified to transact the various occurrences of life that may fall under thy notice with [Music] propriety william corbett was a quaker though he built the most imposing and expensive house in cantwell's bridge he accounted for every item every penny he spent [Music] in the 166 years of corbett family occupancy a thousand voices have echoed here none so sweet or insistent as the letters of young boys away at school i feel as if my spirit is taken away from me but when i go home i will be joyful and merry as you please it sometimes seems like as if i was at home sitting around your little table indeed i would eat as greedy as a home i remain your melancholy homesick nephew the corbett house speaks for colonial delaware and its economic and social ties with philadelphia as reflected in this letter from a cousin in philadelphia i think i can feel how refreshing solitude and rural ease was to thy mind after bidding adieu to this noisy town on the second floor the master builder robert may fashioned one of the most beautiful drawing rooms in america almost 11 feet tall the chimney breast is a masterpiece of subtle craftsmanship [Applause] [Music] i have sent tea it cost 15 shillings and i believe it's good how happy should i be if there was not so long a distance as 80 miles between us on one of his frequent trips to philadelphia corbett himself might have seen this high chest attributed to john elliott whose skilled hand could turn mahogany into delegate naturalistic forms abdura my dear cousin my paper is now full he can therefore have no more remember me to all the children in which i am joined by our family and believe me thy affectionate cousin [Applause] a night almost 200 years old comes again to the master bedroom of the corbett house the voices of the past are quiet now [Music] [Music] ah [Laughter] [Music] [Music] william corbett was a man of uncommon enterprise tanner farmer businessman and his georgian mansion is the finest of many distinguished homes forming a pocket of the past that is odessa delaware [Music] [Applause] [Music] so oh my god that was so boring i am reminded of school trips to there was a place called chicapen plantation which was i don't know two hours from uh my school and uh i went there twice and it was the same type of thing where you go you're in the visitor center a bunch of kids they're like and now we're gonna show a short film that talks about you know what you're about to see and oh my god it's so boring you know trying to give some sort of historical context but it's just oh the worst so that's funny that that i show a lot of things that are really tedious and boring but they do not bring back that kind of feeling of like this is just grueling uh like that film did i think it's definitely bringing up some some memories memories of my past um so watching a film like that it deserves some sort of reward uh i should say thanks folks for buying coffee um if you like what you saw you can also uh click like and share although after that last film maybe you you've decided to reassess uh your relationship with av geeks um how dare they show a film that boring but um that's the thing at least there were some moving images of still still a lot of buildings and trees kind of swaying in the breeze uh sometimes it's just uh still images and it's just panning across that iconographic ken burns type of thing it's the worst um all right so to make up for it uh here's a bunch of tv trailers uh from a fellow uh collector i digitized a bunch of these and i thought i'd color corrected them but it looks like i did a really lousy job so there are all sorts of different types of faded that's the challenge with the trailer is it's like 30 minutes or 30 seconds long so i have to color correct each single one because each one was on a different color stock and each one was different fading all that stuff so this one i obviously failed on um here we go here's some tv trailers enjoy too many suspects and two private eyes head up to murder [Music] at a theater near you tim conway and don
