[Music] ours is a powerful nation found on faith and equality men and women came here fleeing the oppression and poverty of the old world seeking freedom looking for a better chance in life in the new through the years the urge for independence personal and political grew into the american spirit a living force that is the foundation of our power today an urge toward wider horizons that is still pushing on vigor of mind and body we owe to inheritance from the pioneers who carved the beginnings of our nation out of the wilderness with back-breaking toil clearing farms draining swamps building their homes mills and towns with bible acts and plows braving hardship and death they settled the great central valley and generation by generation pushed on across the trackless prairie over the grasslands to the mountains through the passes to the promised land following the star of freedom they opened the way for the millions who poured in after them to settle the west link the oceans with roads and finally rails a swift iron horse [Music] and so was built for us a mighty nation mightiest in the world a productive power unequal anywhere else built up by free americans for free america today new yorker and california midwest farmer rancher of the great far west yankee fisherman southern tobacco grower craftsmen and laborer industrial workers artists men and women in all walks of life we are shareholders in the greatest enterprise on earth the united states of america unlimited our character of our people young in hearts independent in thought and nature skilled of hands invented industrious and creative all these go into the shaping of an american out of this great melting pot of races and people the highest class of skilled craftsmen has been developed by american labor and industry american enterprise has harnessed fire and water wind sun and soil to produce an abundance of everything giant turbine generators motors turn the wheels of production throughout the land factory seat with steam flare with flame belch smoke and fuels roar and strain night and day to produce more and more of the vital materials and the commodities of this industrial age from the earliest dawn of civilization commerce and trade have determined a nation's standard of living production and distribution are the backbone of commerce providing the jobs and goods and services for the nation in mass production this nation has no equal the automotive industry the assembly line turning out so many things so fast from interchangeable parts [Music] so vast and varied is our power to produce to meet every material need of man we can glimpse only a few of the highlights of the complex picture of our industry trace here the more colorful strands that make up the endless pattern of american production and distribution the fabric of our power and plenty we have a wealth of natural resources nature's gifts to this fortunate land out of mines seventy thousand of them comes cold essential for an industrial nation the source of so much of our power and strength [Music] we mine more coal using more labor-saving devices like this coal cutter than any other people this black treasure from the earth is blasted crushed transported to supply power to transform raw materials into thousands of things of beauty and everyday use coal feeds the fires of industry forging the riches of the nation with an inconceivable volume of searing heat to make steel most useful of metal [Music] molten steel pouring from boiling cauldrons an inferno of white flames black smoke and fumes rising from stack and chimney that spells production counting high and higher raising our standard of living as it mounts produce plenty and we shall have plenty never has man had the power to produce for his needs as we have that power today pits [Music] and quarries [Music] and oil fields disgorge a multitude of substances fuel [Music] copper granite building stone high grade iron ore we have dug deeply from the earth to replenish the nation and a world in need as here in the largest open-pit mine in the world tremendous masses of crude materials have been mastered making glass melting aluminum purifying beatings molten copper pass roll drawn spun from thin wire to burnished cables not only in the treasure below the earth are we fortunate but reaching to the sky and soaring perpendiculars is another rich gift of nature our magnificent forests to enrich and beautify our land we must plant another tree for everyone we cut giant redwood sections on the way to the mill pine cut with precision converted into lumber by ingenious power driven [Music] machines lumber for american homes countless uses for pulpwood millions of tons a year to be processed into the paper we use so lavishly by still other intricate machinery paper is invested with color and ink the press a free press a powerful protection to a democracy is the right to information as guaranteed to us by the constitution our press augmented by radio communicates truth knowledge and understanding to our people and to all the peoples of the world the ever expanding scope of the motion picture that breaks through the barriers of language and nationality to entertain to speak in the universal tongue of music and to educate a powerful medium for the diffusion of knowledge and good will among men and nations to help build a peaceful world now let's take a look at our peaceful fields of fertile earth and living green lucky man the farmer grows his own groceries shares nature's bounty and beauty rests in the shade of his own california vine or georgia peachtree by means of tractor and harvester and combine by improved machinery and tools and equipment our farm production is prodigious grain from the middle west cotton from the south every section of the country has its special product from the northeast rich maple sugar from the northwest fine wool for your winter coat from the southwest hives leather for your shoes and meat and food a powerful piece in a hungry world abundant production being further increased by improved methods of soil conservation by the magic of water here a giant man-made canal detours billions of gallons to acres that never bloomed before transforms them into wide expanse of rich green fields to yield a bountiful harvest a tremendous stream of food from every part of the land rose to market on the wheels of a transportation system unequaled anywhere in the world [Music] a salute to american enterprise engineering skill capital and labor that has built up and constantly improves our vast network of railways highways with their fleets of trucks our system of waterways shipping canals for inland transportation breathtaking bridges and for air transport the plane an american invention that has shrunk time and distance brought continents within a night's journey of each other conquest of the air we are only beginning to comprehend its power we have put rivers to work harness the floods with gigantic dams of concrete and steel to make power electric power white coal for industry river current transformed into electric currents carried from powerhouse over the miles to your house to the houses of industry electricity powers this modern robot which shapes a formless mass into delicate glass tumblers with fantastic ease and without the touch of human hand performs an unbelievably intricate task with rhythm and precision turns out the finished article by the thousands colors dyes plastics synthetics magic in the industrial arts solomon in all his glory was not arrayed as one of us in this age of invention and applied science yes since benjamin franklin first discovered electricity we have come a long way in mastering and directing this wizard force to make power and light but nations do not live by their material power alone our basic principles of government by the people with liberty and law our free institutions faith in god and man there is a real power behind the nation whether this american way of life this last best hope of earth shall endure is up to us farmer and mechanic teacher doctor businessman and banker what are we doing to strengthen our great heritage today the peace of the world depends on the stability of the united states the nation's strength depends upon the wisdom the work and the thrift of the people our security is the nation's security that is why our treasury urges us to save purity can regularly in united states savings bonds the safest investment on earth our shares in the future strength and prosperity of america the land we own the land we love what difference is within is breast i thrilled to see all the glory [Music] [Music] is [Music] this is my concrete [Music] um very white centric view of how our nation was built but um some beautiful footage in there of uh manufacturing and that that shot at the end is so glorious of us walking towards i don't they mean what they meant back in the day and what they mean for us now or we just you know make fun of them kind of depends where we're at and how we're feeling uh this next film is really great um it is a uh it's based on a series of children's books and it's called the boy and the boa boy and ebola enjoy [Music] he's so big mom show me a how big is he baby isn't he beautiful isn't he gorgeous eliza martin i'll tell you right now never get to like that thing mom why because he's not like other pets he's scary and he'd be different boy are you prejudiced you don't even know oh hey mark why don't you put a leash on him then you won't worry about him getting lost do you let him sleep with you of course not i'm so crazy that mine's going to be even crazier because i'm going to get a pony my mother isn't going to like this she won't have to she'll never see it yeah get the picture nigel you've been buying [Music] look at that what is that what does it look like it's mice frozen mice well for nigel martin for heaven's sake i'm sorry mom i forgot to tell you when i put them in the freezer scott couldn't keep them for me this week always like them yeah what about me i almost had a heart attack well nigel's been acting kind of strange lately he's been hiding in dark corners not really wanting me to touch him that's all we need mice in the freezer and the six makeup upstairs i just may run away from home and you guys can fix your own dinner look at his eyes they look kind of strange like a feral children yes they do look strange do you think he's going blind i don't know martin well you're a doctor don't you know what's wrong with him well martin uh snake probably has sicknesses that a people doctor like me knows absolutely nothing about look it's too late to do anything for him tonight though if he doesn't look better tomorrow perhaps you better take himself dead okay all right martin what did you do oh what happened now oh nothing nothing i'm just cleaning out of cake sorry i thought you just cleaned it out yesterday oh well actually he got a little sick oh no well if he's sick i guess you better try to find out what's the matter with it maybe you could call scott but scott's not home right now he's over at the library during the zoo show hey but maybe i could bring nigel over that sounds like a good idea hey kids there ain't no phone in the library yeah why'd you bring your bowling ball forward it isn't a bowling ball yeah what is it friend it's it's a snake a 30-foot rattler um [Music] oh me [Music] together [Music] is on to mine a kid he has something of mine but we're not gonna have a taste going on in here what was it that he took my bowling bag it's very important i have to have it right away all right all right i'll find him don't worry he won't get away from me where are you headed zusha oh well that's in the children's library enough you go there quietly and i'll find the bag and bring it to you okay well okay but it's very important i have to have it right away don't worry don't worry i'll bring it for you all right okay my next time okay look it'll be a little quiet i'm trying to calm him down and a boy there's nothing to be afraid of he's not going to of like fan face you like that [Music] how you like that this is called a teddy bear he's flat does he come out during the day or at night right it's nice the reason for this is because of his coloration now have you ever been in the woods at night with trees with with the moon shining through the trees and you get little spots of darkness and little spots of light well this animal blends right in with it this is the red-tailed ball constrictor and it's a non-poisonous snake if it bites you it won't poison you but it can't hurt but fall constrictors are usually nice atoms they don't hurt people they don't need people and there's really there's really no need to be afraid of in fact there's a fella out here now that has one and he's not afraid of them at all mark come on up martin show you how people can can get used to snakes martin's a nice guy and he's look at him he's not afraid of him at all so there's no need to be afraid of nature as long as you know how to handle them and take good care of them they're going to be nice to you snakes have no ears they can't hear a thing the way they do here is by sound sound vibrations they pick up the vibrations through their skin and this is the way they feel they're not wet and slimy they're very dry and they feel cool because they're cold-blooded they also like to wrap around things they feel very secure and happy when they're wrapped around things the reason he's going up my sweater is because snake don't really like bright lights and they try to find dark corners to hide hey scott that was a great show you didn't come here just to see me in action did you i would have come anyway but i brought lingerie along i've been worried about him he he threw up a little while ago what did i tell you about handling nigel too much especially after he's eaten any other symptoms his eyes like a film yeah what's happening tj he's getting ready to share he's gone it's gone the kids can't have stole the bag nigel must still be in the library [Music] you see there's a snake you better grab something to hit it with if he had been found we would have heard it by now let's just go and find it [Music] uh great film so good um i have another one that seems like it's from the same series uh it's called the day the boa ate the laundry but it's uh animated but i think it's the same kid in same boa same family um so lots of fun there you could tell that that film has been was shown a lot because there's all the scratches and all the splices and all that stuff and so um normally uh the disney films i have my collection be beat up like that because they get shown a lot and so this one must have been a real crowd pleaser with kids um the bag of frozen mice so good so good so uh i just wanted to say that tomorrow i'm gonna be doing a screening at the uh houston air terminal museum and um well at you know virtually uh via zoom we'll have a private zoom thing and so you can uh participate i'm gonna put a link uh to where you can buy tickets and the tickets go to support um the houston air terminal museum and also um a little bit of money goes to av geeks uh for doing this show and so it'll be some stuff that we've seen here but also some other stuff and basically it'll be uh old films about commercial air flight and how much it's changed um so it's a lot of fun and i like i said i'll put um i'm gonna do it right now as we talk i'm gonna put uh comments put it in the comments to um in the lakes also thank you so much for uh buying coffee uh yesterday was a crazy day where i lesson is there's a kid who has a bow constrictor and kids get excited watching it um so yeah it's provocative in that it gets kids brains thinking and they have fun so let's see what we've got time wise all right so this next film is a drug film um it kind of takes a long time to get to its point but like many drug films uh the danger is not only the kids will not pay attention to it but the danger is that they might learn something from the drug film about how to use the drug so there's a scene here where somebody is rolling a joint and so they might take notes i don't know all right so [Music] wow um that was really quite something um kind of an epic uh drug education film um and you know it's it's different because it doesn't have a narrator uh doesn't have a voice of god who's kind of talking about the dangers of the drugs it's trying to illustrate that through the narrative um now how we interpret the narrative is i would say the kids birthday party was far more dangerous uh to the kid who jumped than the uh marijuana party but yeah it's just me anyways i you know trying to draw parallels and stuff like that so the editing was nuts and i guess the filmmakers were like yeah we want to relate to teens and young adults and and identify with the fact that their lives are hassles they're constantly being hassled by their parents who don't understand them and drugs seem like a convenient way to kind of get past that but um you know and about peer pressure and all that stuff that's all the things that um drug films kind of talk about so um before we go i just want to leave you with some tv trailers enjoy i cannot touch your body as a man but my child shall live as a man among others my child and yours in the privacy of a woman's room against her will the inconceivable act julie christie carries the demon seed fear for her demon seed [Music] that way conway it's tim conway in the runaway movie smash of the year how did they get away they went that away trailers so those were shown on television uh for movies that were coming out at the time so um that tim conway chuck mccann film that away maybe capitalizing on the apple dumpling gang um anyhow uh
