[Music] so [Music] it's absolutely class condition jimmy i think this is really the car you're looking for money that's no real problem i'm sure you're qualified to buy it on time and you'll find that we're very flexible on our credit here i understand your situation that you have to have a car now but you might not be able to swing too high a monthly payment i'm sure we can work something out can you sign for it i'll show you again jim you're over 18 aren't you not sure you can handle the payments oh don't worry i can tell when someone is qualified to buy on credit do you suppose i would offer you credit if i didn't think you could handle it unfortunately he very well might the salesman is offering you credit because he knows he can collect whether or not the payments are easy on you is not really his problem suppose you have a job and you are collecting a regular salary each month you could use a car to get to and from work but the car you want costs five hundred don't worry your credit is good you sign an installment contract promising to pay fifty dollars out of each month's pay for the next twelve months and drive home with a car but wait you say fifty dollars a month for twelve months is six hundred dollars well yes first there are some extra expenses [Music] like the credit investigation and credit insurance then there's the cost of the credit itself [Music] the finance charge what this means is that if you don't mind paying the extra cost you can set aside some of your future earnings today and pay out the money later when you receive it if you have to have the car now it might be worth it to you to pay the extra money and take the car rather than waiting until you can save five hundred dollars but there are a few things to watch out for first have you shopped for the money as carefully as you shop for the car financing through the dealer or a small loan company is usually the most expensive way if you can qualify for a bank loan the rate on a car in this price range would probably be about 20 percent which means you'd pay a total finance charge of fifty four dollars and twenty cents if you belong to a credit union you should be able to get a loan for twelve percent which works out to thirty two fifty there are two other ways to reduce the amount you pay for finance charges first if you make a larger down payment you don't have to borrow as much suppose you had a hundred and fifty dollars that you could spend on the car now then you'd only be borrowing 350. the other way to save money is to pay off the debt more quickly if you paid back the 500 in six months the finance charge would be roughly half what you'd pay on a one-year contract remember this if the seller knows he can collect he's going to make it very easy for you to get the credit you need paying off that credit may or may not be easy and it will certainly not be cheap all right ladies keep it up now stretch and down and stretch very good mrs keefer keep it up three four bucks a month sis but according to this contract you've agreed to pay for 24 months in other words you're making payments for two years on a one-year membership boy oh boy my own sister and they say used car salesmen are bad if i tried to sell a deal like this i'd be out of business in a month 360 dollars for a one-year membership actually three hundred dollars is what the membership cost the other sixty dollars is the finance charge i hate to say it soon it's all written there you're paying over 19 a year interest oh damn [Applause] if i wanted to spend 300 on the health club i could have borrowed it someplace else look sue i'm not trying to make you feel bad but why didn't you just read the contract before you signed it oh i don't know i don't know she seemed so friendly and helpful [Music] i guess i was sort of embarrassed at seeming suspicious or something you know i know exactly what you mean i'll bet she was so friendly and helpful that she never stopped talking long enough for you to read the contract i'll bet you even offered you a special deal if you signed up today you've just got to remember sue the salesman's job is selling not looking out for your interest you've got to watch out for yourself and you've got to do it before you sign anything i can see that now joey it's just that at the time i didn't know what to look for you know she kept saying over and over again fifteen dollars a month fifteen dollars a month and then she pointed to the paper and it said fifteen dollars a month well it all seemed very straightforward oh this much i can tell you from my experience selling cars don't ever let the salesman know you with low monthly payments or just a few dollars a week you pay the total and the longer you take to pay it the higher the interest charge well look sis it's all right here under the law the seller has got to show you on the contract what it would cost if you paid cash like i said it cost three hundred dollars for a one-year membership now if you make any down payment that gets subtracted from the total here then we add on any additional charges like with a car that would probably be a credit investigation charge licensing fees maybe credit life insurance now this is the total you're borrowing this is what you're promising to pay back out of your future earnings okay so what i'm borrowing is the full price of the membership 300 there's no uh down payment or extra charges right now here the contract has to tell you what you're paying for the opportunity to pay off the three hundred dollars later well in this case the finance charge is sixty dollars which works out to an annual percentage rate of 19.2 percent and finally down here it says how you agree to pay off the debt how many installments and how much each installment will be well it's all there sis no matter how good or how easy it sounds no matter what you might think the salesman is promising you you pay what it says on the paper great it's terrific you won't regret it jimmy and between you and me jimmy you haven't got a thing to worry about [Music] i mean the transmission is completely shot like the guy said take 300 at least to fix it i'm sorry to hear that jimmy that's a tough break well i mean you told me the car was in good condition when you sold it to me can't you do anything about it we don't guarantee a car that old nobody guarantee a car that old i mean you might get somebody to give you a 50 50 on it but it's just a gimmick that that means they just jack up the repair rates well look if you're not going to fix it then i mean i want you to take it back i don't want to make payments on a car that that doesn't even run you can't sell the car if it's not running that's for the payments that's between you and the finance company i don't catch you well we're a car deal another bank when we say the car we want the money now so we sell your contract to a finance company it's out of our hands well let them take it back i mean it just isn't any use to me i can repossess the car but what'll they get for with the transmission shot 25 bucks 50 bucks you still have to make the payments you got to pay what it says on the paper they can take you to court according to the law and attach your wages or whatever but they'll get that full amount 25 bucks that car was worth 500 when you sold it to me three weeks ago plus that's another 100 worth of fine print [Music] wow this thing smells you know that i mean i mean the whole thing is just a racket take it easy jimmy it's only 50 bucks a month look you like the car before the transmission went right yeah i suppose i get it running again and replace the transmission make you feel better yeah hold on i think i can help you what kind of a car was that cylinder right okay so suppose we put this transmission in there and have it in the same shape as when you drove it out a lot okay let's say you're paying 50 bucks a month now to the finance company right there right okay now we could let you have this transmission for 50 down and don't worry about the payments your credit's so good here and i'll finance it myself you can pay me off [Music] and you can take your time leftover spaghetti for lunch uh some of you just saw me i did a streaming show for the folks at emea the association of moving image archivists uh at 11 o'clock and almost forgot to set it up for the one o'clock show for my regulars but uh thank you so much for those who attended the first one uh and for being gracious enough to allow a bunch of archivists from around the world to come in and watch what we do um i talk often about it to the other archivists about the streaming show and about the community that we've built around it and so i appreciate you being there to kind of show what it was all about uh so that last film was your credit is good by journal films journal um it was kind of the filmmakers that started journal used to work i think at encyclopedia britannica and at um cornet so i've always said that chicago was the hollywood of educational films and journal was kind of based in that area um a suburb of chicago all right got lots to watch um here's a great coordinate film another one uh based in chicago uh beautiful color on this and uh so those who are keeping score i've been scanning a bunch of uh coronet films that i got from the people that own coronet now phoenix films and um this one is actually from my collection but um the level of the of the quality of the kodachrome is what i'm encountering now and scanning them work that i'm doing uh watchman has made his decision a moral decision like other moral decisions it will have an effect on other people make them also choose right from wrong every decision we make every action we take affects the lives of others around us so as you watch a chain of decisions in this film try to see how various people decide what is right try to judge their decisions the film will not judge that's important what is important is the vandalism in this neighborhood warehouses homes cars stores and through this boy we have a chance to get a whole gang and break it up but the boy won't talk he won't tell us who the others were and besides he says that he didn't throw anything but he's our only chance to get at this gang of vandals hold him anyway i'll sign a complaint if necessary might help just to bring him to trial all right i'll talk to him some more and then i'll get in touch with you good night mr castner good night sergeant get him to talk get tough with him scary you can make him talk no then he'd hate the cops turn against them like a regular gangster out of me come on in harry come on in close the door you're in a spot boy i guess you know that don't you want to sit down serious think i know you pretty well i think you really didn't break any windows but we'll have a hard time proving that in court unless some of the others who were there speak up for you can't you see i can't tell you who was there it isn't right to squeal on your friends you haven't got any right to ask me you can sleep here tonight harry i'll get a pillow and blanket aren't you gonna ask me any more questions just one is it right to hide a lawbreaker from justice [Music] harry's problem is far from solved it's not the purpose of this film to solve his problem that's up to you discover and apply your moral standards think of the decisions yet to be made of the decisions already made judge them in the light of your standards what is right and wrong did you agree with harry's decisions would you have done the same what about the night watchman how did he decide what was right would you have done what he did what did harry's mother do that revealed her sense of right and wrong did you agree with her [Music] would you have taken mr castner's stand would you in sergeant kelly's place have forced harry to talk for his own good suppose you were in mr barker's shoes how would you have helped harry how would you have decided what was right what if you had harry's problem how would you work it out it's your story now you decide what is right [Music] [Applause] [Music] so uh harry a lot of people recognize that film from mystery science theater or uh riptrax um this popular film has a lot of great uh stock scent uh cornet actors in it the cop is the dad from a shy guy and also shows up in some other films as a principal um somebody said that they think that one of the kids was in centron's home which would be interesting because that cintron was based in kansas but you know i could i could believe it [Music] all right sorry i had to set up a film so i'm not only showing films to you i'm also uh cheating and uh watching uh some panel presentations at amia the association of moving image virtual conference and there's uh people at iu are talking about their large-scale film digitization project i in indiana university has probably one of the largest collections of educational films and um out there more than me but they also have the resources and they are also a library that actually distributed and lent out these materials so the films didn't have to go far they basically converted from a lending library into an archive of materials and they're um slowly digitizing a bunch of them uh and so i've worked with them many many times on different projects and uh either digitizing stuff or talking to them about their collections and seeing if there was overlap seeing if i had a better copy if they had a better copy anyways they're good people there and they had their uh um president of their college university basically said we want to digitize all of our av holdings and it was a big lots and lots of money and so it's probably one of the largest 16 millimeter of film digitization projects especially for educational materials to date so i am in their shadows but we definitely keep talking um all right so anyways i because i'm watching this other presentation i didn't set up the next film and so this one is a really great film um a little insulting uh but it asks the question why not be beautiful really why not [Music] so [Music] the search for beauty is timeless [Music] to every girl to every woman the way appears to others is of importance but the paths leading to beauty are not always easy to find for many signposts to follow to real beauty so i get to be beautiful every young girl can become beautiful in the true meaning of the word what then is beauty the dictionary defines it as a quality that inspires admiration pleasure approval equality and grace that exalts the mind or spirit in other words beauty is many things both looks and personality [Music] beauty indeed is more than skin deep the most important part of beauty comes from within the inner beauty the healthy mind being interested in life and in the ups caring for others and being involved in the issues of your community and your country being creative [Music] being active [Music] the more you're interested in the world around you the more interesting you become and that's an important part of beauty a healthy mind needs a healthy body and a healthy body needs a good diet a cleanliness the type and amount of food you eat usually controls your figure also it affects your skin arm yourself with a calorie counter and you may find some surprises but there's one trick the models use it how to lose five pounds in five seconds be patient we'll show you later overloading your body with skin poisons can make you break out on your face you don't have to cut out these things but cut down instead eat plenty of lean meat fruit and vegetables and drink lots of liquids what you eat affects also your teeth and good teeth are essential for one of the most effective beauty aids your smile take care of your teeth while you're young it will save trouble later exercise is imperative for your good health and your appearance special exercise may help certain trouble spots of your figure but it's more fun to get your exercise while you play [Music] also it's a good way to make friends [Music] swimming is a good tune-up for the whole body and the brisk walk a day keeps bulges away [Music] a beautiful complexion is one part makeup nine parts cleanliness when you want to remove makeup use a cleansing cream then proceed as usual [Music] cleaning your face with a mild soap then with your fingertips gently work the lather into your skin giving your pores the deep down cleaning they need pores are openings in our skin through which oil or perspiration flow if an opening becomes clogged up the oil is trapped and hardens forming a blackhead or a pimple [Music] the best remedy cleanliness after washing rinse off all the soap with lukewarm water and pat not rub your face dry with a clean towel most teenage girls or may not be enough for proper cleansing of the pores [Music] special cleansing lotions are available for such skins [Music] don't use alcohol for cleaning it robs your skin of important nutrients it is very important to avoid excesses in exposure to the elements above all the burning sun always protect your skin with a suntan lotion too much sunbathing ages your precious skin women have used cosmetics as far back as recorded history can take us [Music] so makeup became a way of life for the modern girl in many parts of the world and certainly in the united states today the cardinal rule is go easy [Music] or the results can become ludicrous take advantage of what's there [Music] accentuate the good points minimize the others optical illusions can in many cases produce the wanted effects a dark spot surrounded by a light field will seem smaller than a light spot surrounded by a dark area for example a light base will make the eyes look smaller a dark base will make them appear larger foundation is used as a base for the rest of your makeup [Music] it also serves to add or tone down color is effective in hiding small defects and acts as a protection against dirt sun and wind a liquid or light cream is recommended except for negro or oriental girls who may prefer a cake makeup because it contains less oil work the foundation from the center of the face toward the hairline using gentle upward strokes make sure it's blended evenly [Music] cosmeticians will guide you in your color choice a foundation with a pink glow will brighten a sallow skin while a reddish skin can be toned down with a beige foundation blot off excess with the tissue if you have disturbed skin medicated makeups are available dark circles under the eyes are often caused by not enough sleep and lack of iron to cover them up use a foundation two or three tones lighter than your base or a highlighting cream blush is applied to give cheeks a quiet glow a good rule to follow is never let blush come nearer the nose than an imaginary line dropped vertically from the center of the eye blush should be applied from the center of the cheek outward and up into the temples blushes can also be used for contouring example a tone three shades darker than the foundation can be used to point up a cheekbone or diminish a wide jaw [Music] powder sets and blends your makeup the simplest powder to use is a colorless translucent one [Music] pat on liberally a tuft of cotton that can be thrown away is the best powder puff to use wait for the powder to set then with another clean powder puff brush away excess with downward strokes eyebrows frame the eye and focus interest on them they are also important in the shaping of the nose pointed eyebrows can make a nose seem longer to remove straggly brows lubricate them with vaseline or baby oil and pluck with tweezers [Music] never pluck eyebrows further than the line even with the inside corner of your eye other plucking should be done under the brow and never above it the color of your eyebrow pencil should be as close as possible to your natural color only the darkest brunettes should use a black pencil [Music] the highest point of the arch should be a straight line from the outer edge of the iris the tapered end of the brow should form a straight line past the outer corner of the eye to the side of the nostril [Music] blend pencil strokes into your brow with a clean mascara brush [Music] mascara applied to lashes would complete the well-groomed eye and is sufficient eye makeup for the early teens however if you wish to give more attention to the eye you may use the following procedure [Music] a lid highlight with a creamy pale shade is flattering to most eyes never wear bright obvious evening colors for contour and emphasis a taupe or brown shade is placed into the lid crease and just above the lid for protruding eyes a dark shadow on the lid will make eyes seem less prominent for deep set eyes a white or very light shade on the lid will make the eyes seem more prominent the three pairs of eyes are exactly the same distance apart these eyes seem to be closer the effect was achieved by concentrating the shadow towards the nose and by bringing the eyebrows closer together here the illusion of widely spaced eyes is created by placing the shadow and brows outward and far apart a gleam of pearly white or beige on the bone just beneath the brow emphasizes the bone structure eyeliner is used to make the lashes seem longer there should be no hard obvious line apply as close to the lashes as possible and remember black can only be worn by girls with very black hair the flattering shade for blondes or brunettes as black adds harshness to the eye mascara makes lashes look longer and fuller incidentally no amount of eye makeup will help if your eyes are drowsy and lackluster to be wide-eyed and alert a full measure of sleep is necessary the right food definitely relates to the clearness and sparkle of your eyes vitamin a and plenty of water are essential for this after the mascara separate the lashes with a clean brush the generally accepted age for wearing lipstick is about 14. a subtle color is the most becoming to apply lipstick prop your elbows firmly on the table supporting the chin with one hand while studying the action with your drawing hand start from the center of the upper lip drawing a smooth curve to the outer corner on the lower lip start at the corner and come to the center with a brush laid flat fill in with the brush or the lipstick itself [Music] blot the excess for a softer smoother look apply a lip gloss remember lips need protection as well as the skin [Music] if you prefer not to wear a lipstick do wear a lip gloss lip shapes can be changed for example [Music] thin lips can be corrected by over painting thick lips can be narrowed by covering them with base then using color only toward the inside of the lips two wide lips can be made less obvious by covering the outer corners with base skin blemishes could not be entirely avoided by most young girls makeup can conceal them but a healthy diet and cleanliness can often prevent them most important never pick or squeeze a blemish it makes matters worse [Music] your hair is the crowning glory and deserves the best of care 100 strokes a day rule still applies it makes your hair more attractive also it improves the health and body of your hair and scalp seafoods which are rich in iodine add luster to the hair choosing a becoming hairstyle for you is the nearest thing to instant beauty simple natural hairdos will never be out of style [Music] shopping for your wardrobe is lots of fun but keep in mind some basic rules use colors that go well with your skin and hair and dress for the occasion dress for your figure but there are still many do's and don'ts on the way to become a complete attractive person cultivate a relaxed pleasant voice speak correct english don't talk too much or too loud sometimes it doesn't go over too well and for good reasons [Music] and keep in mind listening is often more appreciated than talking smoking no don't talk with your hands you look much better this way and all the makeup in the world couldn't make up for this sort of thing don't sit in a lazy clumsy way do sit gracefully [Music] oh yes you still want to know how to lose five pounds in five seconds by simply standing correctly this girl has lost five pounds almost instantly [Music] don't walk sloppily the way you walk is a cue to your personality walk smartly if you need glasses let them help you the right frames can be very pleasing improve your looks as much as you can this is not conceit but good common sense it will help you in your social life and later in getting a job by giving you more self-confidence above all remember the beauty that shines through you from within your inner beauty is your most beautiful most precious possession beauty is more than a pretty face it's a way of life [Music] that one was a lulu that was really quite something um you know there's one thing about the makeup and all that but then those last couple of minutes about how you hold yourself and what you do to be attractive to boys and to others is fascinating um yeah and what's funny is so i put this online and somebody who does a thing about makeup was like hey can i include this on on my site and then this other person also used it on their site and then the first person complained like they they're using it on their site and they're my competitor and that doesn't seem fair and i had to say like well look this film is actually in public domain um people use it and so i just wanted to be out there i'm sorry that you feel like i am sliding you it's so it's really interesting and it's something i have to reconcile with all the time is the concept of who owns these films i certainly have physical copies of all these films in my collection that i own there are copyrights on who owns them but at no point do i want to say i they're mine and i own them i certainly like to get credit if somebody uses something that i took the time and energy to save and digitize and put online because that's a lot of work and that's a lot of spending a lot of money on absurd things um but um you know i put stuff out there because i want people to see them i didn't make the films but hey you know it's out in the world it's the idea my mission is to get them to eyeballs new eyeballs and so if somebody is taking copies of it and putting it out there you know now if it's footage of me talking and they're doing something with it then we'll see but uh all right one last film then i'm gonna go with the magician um it's an amazing film and i have been wanting to show it but i also didn't want to show something that's way too triggering literally triggering um really phenomenal and it might be polish i don't know um i tried to look up semaphore to see like where films and where they were based but um yeah but anyways i had to sweeten it with some shake hands uh with danger um it's a
