oops sorry about that um yeah it just kind of ends um and there's no soundtrack so i can't really keep track if i'm bouncing around to other windows as i am always doing uh hi i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show um uh that was a film making of rusco brake linings uh which showed up in a collection of old um castle films castle was a uh film distributor that marketed films to home markets and they would often times have like kind of little news reels of sports war stuff stunts um also would have cartoons that they would license from other people likewise they licensed the newsreel stuff from other people so somebody was like yeah i have this collection of these that my father got from my grandfather and they were i was like well i don't know if i really want to take these on but i was like sure i'll take them and uh in them was this amazing document uh for how they make break linings and um so from now on i'm just gonna accept whatever if somebody has a bunch of boxes of film i'm going to take them because you never know what's going to be in the midst of them and so i told the person who's given to me i was like hey this is in here do you want a copy and so i make copies of the stuff for them from dvd but yeah it's phenomenal um and also insanely scary because there is no masks there's nothing that's keeping these workers from inhaling vast amounts of asbestos fibers uh and this is why ultimately i put this film online and i got law firms uh contacting me because they wanted to use this as evidentiary footage for basic lawsuits against brake manufacturers and manufacturers who used asbestos as part of their whatever so um yeah a fascinating thing and of course i love assembly line footage and i love manufacturing footage so this qualifies but it does kind of highlight like the working conditions um and this film i'm not 100 sure but i'm thinking it came out in the 30s and it did not have a soundtrack so there you go um this next film i haven't seen this um it's called walter and i just watched a couple of seconds of it just to make sure that the color was okay um and uh this looks to be really fascinating so uh this isn't like a ha ha film this is like wow this is really kind of interesting so here's walter [Music] and [Music] hey [Music] it all started when i was three i was involved in an accident and in this accident i lost the use of my legs but i remember the the whole thing uh almost as if it happened yesterday i remember i was in an accident and i remember waking up and seeing from the windows of the ambulance and then i passed out again and i woke up again in the hospital the room was all quiet and i was in any pain i think i said something to myself to see if i could hear i felt my back and it was bloody i had blood on my hands but there was no pain yet i remember once when i was in the hospital i used to be strapped to a board because i had to cook it back and i didn't understand why the children wouldn't play with me you know like they were afraid of me more occurrences like this would happen uh when i got out i was using both wheelchair and braces and crutches people would come by and do their daily bit i guess they think they're doing you get deep they would say i'm sorry for you young man or they would give me money you know and uh sometimes i would refuse it sometimes i wouldn't i think it helped the people ease their own minds for some unknown reason you know like they carry this guilt-conscious thing and i think i think it was when i was in my last year of junior high school in ninth grade but i decided that i really had a handicap and that i was going to have to go out and attack the world in a very heavy kind of way because you are handicapped and strange but you give people a sort of a power over you you know you don't want them to think that you can't do anything because you're physically handicapped but they will think your mind is impaired they will think your body is impaired because they can see that and they think they have to do everything for you [Music] [Music] i don't think i realized i was handicapped until i realized i was in a wheelchair i realized that there was people that could walk i remember one thing that happened to me doctor came in and he said young man we're gonna have to give you surgery and i said okay and he said we're gonna give it to you tomorrow [Music] i remember i had the surgery and i came out of it okay and then they gave me braces and i used braces but i still wasn't aware of the fact that anything was any different there are people that didn't use braces and i used braces and that was it and then i was becoming older and i began to realize that there was something drastically different it began to dawn on me but i was not only just handicapped but this is going to cause some [Music] [Music] problems [Music] people who can do a physical thing sort of look down sometimes while persons may not be able to do that same act but yet their minds may be equal i don't think everyone looks down upon people that are physically handicapped people don't understand and their ignorance is a great danger i think one of the most dangerous points also is something that's on our own side that is the handicapped person's side and that is a person who is handicapped but doesn't have a goal who have let his handicap momentarily destroy him and also certain types of advertising that are on tv and radio that tell a person if they have any kind of jobs that they want done call us and we'll have our people do them i think people see this and they feel that people are physically handicapped is the only thing that they can do the similarities of course are the flat roof and although this has is only is two story this is one story the structure is almost identical because this will repeat itself this plate will repeat itself above the floor joists to form a second story if you look at the at the model or at the drawing here you'll find that this type of structure is identical [Applause] an architect is what i really want to be [Music] so fascinating to me you know it really intrigued me how you could literally draw pictures with straight lines and then from that and a few little other words and numbers you could build something and make it three-dimensional i've designed a wheelchair on paper houses fascinate me i like to build them on paper then i like to see them go up before my eyes i think it'll be very useful it's something that i can do a formula based on the size of this member here you know what that number is um i call it cattle here that's nice i'm thinking of um why [Music] that also will be sort of respectable one of these days i hope to be masters in architecture and have my aia the purpose of them is to hang after seeing some of the work that walter did in my drafting classes i could tell that it might be a problem to keep him challenged because the work he was doing was a better quality than the rest of the students i was afraid that unless i could give him more individual attention that i wouldn't present a challenge to him that i felt he was capable of accepting it always surprised me that walter could carry the equipment necessary for his drafting classes and negotiate all the turns and the elevators and the parking that had to be done with all of this equipment is that what you mean yeah over here in the window yeah yeah and as i say it's a more a rule of thumb but i think we're going to cover that in our next class meeting okay okay [Music] my mother died about three years ago and my father was divorced from my mother some very good friends of mine who became very good friends with my mother sort of became my foster parents and they helped me through my last year high school and college and it's very strange because i'm black and like they're white and it astounds people when i say my mother and then they meet her and she's white i've been taking into the family so drastically that if i'm not home for dinner i'm in trouble [Music] [Music] i remember before i met walter i always used to look at paraplegics and think boy those poor people you know something is wrong with them and everybody's eyes kind of turn towards them and you go boy that's sad isn't it with walter now it's different i don't even notice there's a chair underneath him we go places do things you know it's like he's just strutting around with everybody else come on [Music] [Music] [Music] okay [Music] amen [Applause] [Music] yes [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] [Music] water came to the team about two months after i was coaching and at the time i saw walter an ability i enjoyed seeing because walter had such a hustling type attitude plus he was so happy-go-lucky he could almost say he was a team clown but i called him the cheerleader because he's always cheering everybody on when they did wrong he didn't jump down his back and walter his kind of person that he does everything all out his whole heart and soul going through it to me this was the epitome that walters showed to everybody around him [Music] he loved life even though he had been in a wheelchair all his life he loved life and this to me was the greatest part about knowing walter being able to be around walter to help him in many ways he's helped me in many ways [Music] [Music] i think when you play ball you have a desire to reach a goal to know the ball to know your wheelchair to know yourself you know your players and you reach out for these things and you begin to attack them starting with yourself what can i do i know this can be done in a wheelchair i've seen it i've heard it i know it i feel it [Music] come on [Applause] [Music] [Applause] right [Music] [Music] you [Music] [Music] [Music] it's important to set goals for yourself because every day you get up you continue to fight to show yourself and other people that your mind isn't handicapped but only your body is only a portion of your body is i don't like to use the word physically handicapped i don't feel that i am physically handicapped other people look at me that way and it's their problem not mine [Music] [Music] so i love films like this from the 70s that are these kind of character sketches these uh looks at these different people and their lives um there are a couple that i have that deal with people that are paraplegic or are in wheelchairs looking at their lives um there's one called gravity is my enemy who is about an artist who basically paints and draws with a brush or a pen in his mouth uh because he fell out of a tree and had spinal cord injuries um there is leo bjornman who's also someone who has physical disabilities but you know goes to town and his little tractor every day and sells pencils um bonnie consuela who i think was suffering from the thalidomide um thing so it's it's kind of interesting and there's another film uh which i might show at some point called boy on a skateboard which is another it's a child who uh has um diminished uh legs um and so these are fascinating because they they really kind of help us think about what are the lives of these people and uh really kind of an interesting look into their lives and also look into the 70s and like how how did we deal with uh handicapped people of differently abled people in the in the 70s compared to now uh what had what opportunities have opened up to them recently um things like that so you know it's not all about the goofy and the horrible it's sometimes we sometimes we learn something um so uh occasionally somebody gets joins us for the first time like what's going on what is this and so actually somebody who said hey i collect educational films how do you get this stuff online um here's my deal this is what i do um so the film that we just saw is on a telecini um which i just broadcast this is a when it was new it was a sixty thousand dollar telephony and i'm rewinding right now um hopefully it's not too loud um so um that is actually going into a box the video signal is going into a box which is digitizing it and then it is being broadcast via software that i use called obs um studio which is open broadcast software and that gets sent to this thing called restream io which breaks up the stream into um four different streams one of which is going to facebook one's going to youtube one is going to twitch one is going to twitter so that's how i do it um there's lots of other ways that this can be done i have seen people literally take their their cell phone their smartphone and you know turn the camera on a film projection that they're doing they're projecting from 60 millimeter on a wall and they set the shutter on the the video camera so that it's it reduces the flicker or sometimes they don't and then they can send facebook live or youtube live that way um sometimes people take files and that's what i do is i kind of mix up files with other things uh things that i've digitized over the last 10 years uh so that i can kind of do a little bit of both i'm going to cut that because the white noise is crazy uh anyways that's how i do it um this next film uh this is the fifth in the series of uh uncle smiley films uncle smiley is our favorite uh slapstick slapstick environmental hippie um and this one is uncle smiley follows the seasons uh i thought that this was the last one but there's actually two more after this that we have so we've got more don't don't fear we got more uncle smiley in the queue this is great because it has wonderful songs and sometimes odds soundtracks by jim burrows who made a lot of films with interesting songs that are will stick in your head so i'm just going to go ahead and say you're welcome and i'm sorry here's uncles uncle smiley follows the seasons [Music] [Music] busy [Music] oh no matter what happens is [Music] summer is the time of year the sun is at its height when all the world beneath the sun is warm and green and bright roots are spreading in the soil see the crops we grow all the things we grow to eat are standing in a row summer is the time of year for grazing in the field horses cows and animals and all kinds in the fields eating from the summer earth or lying in the sun you never have to tell them when the summer time's begun [Music] animals all feed upon the land as you and i and land depends upon the sun and water from the sky and bees depend upon the flowers for the food they need just as we depend upon the honey from the bees [Music] just as winter spring and fall the summer has to end it's sad to see the summer go for summer was our friend but seasons are connected just as folks upon a wheel the seasons spin around just like a giant ferris wheel [Music] wow [Music] [Music] round and round the seasons turn watch them closely we can some are fading in the past autumn time is coming fast leaves of yellow red and brown falling gently to the ground falling to the earth below the earth that gave them strength to grow fall has come to bring its pretty colors to our door in the fields and meadows and upon the forest floor everywhere around the leaves of autumn fill the air feel the autumn breezes flowing gently through your hair ball is here the time of year to harvest what we grow time to gather apples from the apple trees we know apple's juicy red and ripe falling from the trees falling to the earth with every breath of autumn breeze bring a bucket or a basket anything to fill fill it with the ripest apples lying on the hill careful when you climb the tree don't fall and bump your head remember only pick the apples that are ripe and red [Music] autumn is the time for witches goblins and for ghosts it isn't hard to find the one that scares us all the most jack-o'-lanterns filled with fire light shining in the night whoever would have thought a pumpkin could give such a fright [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] hey [Applause] [Music] round and round the seasons go winter brings the ice and snow and trees that once were brown or green are whiter than you've ever seen the earth is quiet now fast asleep under snow that's falling deep have left behind the winter sky [Laughter] [Music] wake up on a winter's morn to find that fall is gone snow has fallen everywhere and autumn's leaves are gone fields that once were filled with crops must wait till winter stops and all the wild woods animals are snug inside their homes [Music] grab your sleigh and come away now to the hill to play up and down the hill we'll go laughing in the snow snow is white and snow is cold lots of fun to hold making snowmen can be fun for you and [Music] everyone [Music] uh [Music] this is easy [Music] round and round the seasons turn spring is here to take its turn [Music] warm spring sunshine fills the air and newborn life is everywhere springtime is the time when life renews itself by giving life too young that must replace the old as spring is born from winter's cold spring is blooming everywhere and color's light and gay the smell of spring is in the air with blossoms on display leafy trees and honeybees and butterflies abound the land is waking up again everywhere around spring is bursting forth again the winter cold has passed and streams that once were frozen hot are flowing very fast water from the melting snow and gentle falling rains are flowing down the mountains to the valleys and the plains [Applause] running through the meadow in the early morning and then the lions are waiting in the meadow just for you dandelions are fine for wine and dandelion greens and some folks even like them more than green or yellow beans [Music] hmm [Music] [Music] round and round the seasons turn watch them closely we can learn rising on a summer's morn another year it's come and gone summer is a part of all a part of winter spring and fall and touching one is touching all the balance ties them one and all [Music] we're connected one and [Music] so [Music] i know some people really really don't like the uncle smiley films because of the songs because of the pacing um because it is so very very very 1970s i get it and some people love it they embrace it um there's somebody set up like a fan page on facebook at one point for uncle smiley um but no i get it i totally understand it is a double-edged sword uncle smiley and if you're not careful you'll get horribly mutilated cut um so uh uh anyways that it'll be all stuff about a commercial air flight and specifically like what was it like to fly back in the 40s you know 50s 60s 70s um and it's a lot of fun a lot of people who participate i've done screenings actually at the at the terminal museum and it's really an amazing space and i recommend visiting uh post covid um so the next film we're gonna watch is great it's a great thing because uh what i do is i pull films and then um watch them [Music] uh with you and so say occasionally i'll watch a film that i haven't seen before like walter which we just watched but this next film i didn't even have in the database this was on a shelf i pulled it i was like huh this is interesting i don't think i've seen this um and sure enough i haven't and i haven't even logged in in the database so this is one of the advantages to me showing you these films is i get to watch films i didn't even know um that i had so it's a little uh vinegary and curled but the telecentering will handle it but occasionally the frame will roll but this is called accident behavior and uh i see that there's a copy on the prylander archive but um i didn't know i had this so here it is on 16 accident behavior [Music] enjoy one out of every four of us will become involved in a serious automobile accident within the coming five years no two accidents and no two drivers are absolutely identical but there are certain common sense rules we can all follow to help ourselves and also the other fellow the most important rule of all is to keep calm this is often extremely difficult due to shock and great emotional stress a calm person can more readily aid the injured can gather necessary facts to report the accident in a logical and straightforward manner quickly check the injured for severe bleeding a severed artery can cause death within five minutes unless the flow of blood is stopped the best thing you can do for severe bleeding if you are not a trained first aider is to fashion a compress out of clean material and apply it directly to the cut it must be held firmly in place until the bleeding stops a first aid kit of course should be standard equipment in every automobile fire is an ever-present menace at the scene of an accident the force of impact very often ruptures a gasoline tank or a car may be overturned spilling gasoline on the roadway injured persons trapped in a vehicle have been cremated because others have been careless turn off your ignition be sure there are no burning cigarettes in the car remove lighted cigars or cigarette and snuff them out immediately warn others not to smoke near the accident keep the accident from getting worse someone should be sent in each direction to flag down approaching motorists this is especially true if the accident is on a winding or hilly road where visibility is impaired on highways where the speed limit is high warnings should be at least 400 feet from the accident a good method of measuring a safe distance is to count off 150 paces sure your warning is not misunderstood flares should be carried in every car for emergency use a flare is easily seen and its implication of danger is understood by all motorists don't stand on the roadway stand slightly off to one side where you are not in danger of being struck darkness brings additional hazards even on a straight road it is imperative that someone be dispatched in each direction to warn approaching motorists here flares are invaluable for such emergency a flashlight will serve as a warning device if it is used properly point it in the direction of an approaching car but don't raise the beam high enough to blind the approaching driver if neither flares nor a flashlight are available use a large piece of white paper or white cloth white reflects about 90 percent of the light striking it naturally it's more readily seen by the driver of an approaching automobile when stopping to offer assistance at the scene of an accident be sure to park your car well off the roadway and far enough away to allow other automobiles to pass this will also prevent your car from being struck by an approaching automobile at night turn your car in such a manner that the wrecked cars are illuminated by your headlights this illumination will help approaching motorists to see the accident it will also assist in caring for the injured if you are requested to send for the police or an ambulance be sure to get all of the information before you start how many are injured do they all require an ambulance is a tow truck needed and how many cars involved in the accident before starting out make a note of your own speedometer reading when you reach a place where you can phone again check your speedometer then you can give the exact distance from the place from which you are phoning to the scene of the accident very often you will find that people who operate roadside businesses are old hands at reporting accidents they will know exactly who and where to phone if they offer to phone the information for you give it to them concisely and completely accidents on the highways should be reported to the state police or the highway patrol accidents within city limits to the local police department the telephone operator will connect you with the proper authorities if you simply say i want to report an accident to the police it is always a good idea to send at least two motorists for help sending one in each direction one may reach a phone much sooner than the other all accidents are cleared to a central office so you don't have to worry about duplication of services although certain safety precautions have been previously covered the care and comfort of the injured is of utmost importance if you are not a trained first aider there are only a very few things that you yourself may do for the injured first aid training may be obtained without cost by contacting your local chapter of the american red cross do not move an injured person unless it is absolutely necessary to prevent further injury improper handling can cause serious additional injury it very often results in the person being permanently crippled keep the injured person warm place a blanket newspapers or coats over and under him don't allow him to become chilled or overheated try to maintain a normal body temperature keep the injured person lying down in a comfortable position head level with the body shock of course always accompanies injuries keep the patient reassured and calm wait for an ambulance to transport the injured a station wagon or truck in which the patient can lie out straight could be used if an ambulance is not available an automobile should not be used for transporting the injured except as a last resort the back seat of an automobile can be removed and will serve as an emergency stretcher don't leave valuables in your car unattended beware of jip garages and towing services any towing service recommended by the police or by an automobile club can be relied upon to provide adequate service at fair prices in addition to safety precautions and the care of the injured you must fulfill certain legal requirements there are reports that must be filed with the proper authority to aid in gathering necessary facts the national safety council and various insurance companies have prepared booklets setting forth all of the information you will need to make out your reports remember nothing is gained by roadside arguments an exchange of vital information is all that is required the proper authorities will determine responsibility after the facts have been presented if the driver of a vehicle is unable to gather the necessary information because he is injured a passenger in his car should do it for him in some states he is legally required to do so if no one in the car is able to do it the police will get the required information and will file it for the injured driver the following information should be obtained first procure the license number of the other car or cars involved in the accident note the make year and model of the other car note damage to the other car describe it fully such as smashed left front wheel and fender frame bent windshield broken or any other visible damage get the name and address of the other driver and get the owner's name if someone other than the owner was driving get the driver's license number you are legally required to show your driver's license if so requested a driver involved in an accident who fails properly to establish his identity before leaving the scene of the accident can be charged with hit run driving keep your license up to date with your present address this will enable police to notify your family promptly if you are injured get the names and addresses of witnesses very seldom does a witness actually see the impact or the circumstances leading up to it however it is to your advantage to have verification as to the position of the cars length of skid marks and other pertinent facts mark down the exact time at which the accident occurred note the type of roadway how many lanes is it paved or unpaved if the surface is wet or icy enter these facts also make a sketch of the accident location show the position of your car and the other car or cars indicate in which direction each was proceeding if the accident occurred at an intersection mark the locations of stop signs or signals if you can do so without disturbing them get the names and addresses of the injured get the name of the doctor who accompanied the ambulance established to which hospital the injured are being taken procure the name of the officer in charge and his shield number sign no agreements on the spur of the moment invariably that leads to future trouble if you have a camera take pictures of the accident showing the extent of damage to both cars their position on the highway and the surrounding terrain after being involved in an accident in which someone is injured you must report to either the state or local police department within 24 hours even if injuries are only minor ones such as a cut finger or perhaps a bumped head besides reporting to the police you must send a financial responsibility report to the state department of motor vehicles within 10 days on this form you must list the extent of injuries and their probable costs as well as any damage to property if only property damage is involved you need not report to the police but you must send in your financial responsibility report regardless are responsible for the accident you must still send in the required form if the accident damage is less than the state's minimum requirements which vary from 25 to 100 no report of any kind is necessary however it is a good idea to get the other driver's name and address and the facts concerning the accident in case of future development remember a severed artery can cause death within five minutes unless the flow of blood is checked fire is an ever-present menace never spoke near the scene of an accident don't move an injured person unless it is absolutely necessary to prevent further injury keep the accident from getting worse take adequate precautions to warn approaching automobiles send for the police and medical care for the injured just as soon as possible get the facts concerning the accident names and addresses of all concern extent of damage location time and other pertinent facts notify the proper authorities of injury accidents within 24 hours send in your financial responsibility forms promptly if you are insured notify your insurance company at once if our present accident rate continues the odds are 50 50 that sooner or later you will be killed or injured in an automobile accident wow that was pretty amazing film i don't know where i even got that from um i have to do some research to figure out um so 1950 the film's interesting for a couple of reasons one is um how much things have changed in 70 years um how different i mean that's i don't even think cars were required to have seat belts at that point that that was a flat belt were pretty much uh a feature that you pay for a luxury feature and some of them probably didn't even have that option um before there were a proliferation of cell phones before there was 911 probably before there were uh first responders um in ambulances i would say in some areas so i like films like this because they kind of show us that let's see yeah thanks everybody for tuning in today uh very courthouse just had a bunch of cases of covid so things have been kind of wacky um because i am my wife is immunocompromised i can't really participate and i got a doctor's note and so we'll see what happens but um the amina film conference is going on right now virtually it would have been in el paso and um so they asked me to do a screening at 11 so i'll do two screens on thursday now whether or not they're pre-recorded depends on if i am in jury duty so fingers crossed i certainly want to serve my civic duty but i also do not want to expose myself uh to people who are not wearing masks or who are not behaving which is currently what's happening at our county courthouse so um anyways we'll know more tomorrow hopefully everybody have a good rest of your day and i will talk to you soon as
