all right everything's all whacked out it's all whacked out I'm not sure what's going on um YouTube is really misbehaving right now um which is why I sent most of you to the black hole monoplex which is a site uh where they do the last Sunday of every month they show some full length feature film um and they have graciously hosted our uh lunchtime streaming shows and it's a good backup if uh what happens just happened which is YouTube and restream which is what I use to propagate streams if it dies then there you go uh uh so um we just watched some raw footage uh masculine or feminine your role in society and there was no soundtrack so I really want to find that film because films that talk about gender roles are always fascinating uh especially from the past um this next film has got some water damage um but it's fascinating nonetheless this is made for police officers in the excuse me 40s 50s I'm not sure uh the title is all messed up so here's handcuffing foreign is recommended for any possible narcotic knives hacksaw after completing the search of the first man the officer orders him for the right of the second so that at no time is either man out of the officer's line of vision you're right and in order to place them in as much of a disadvantage as possible foreign Association of each weapon with its respective owner may be made by placing it in his head boy oh boy this is what is known as a policeman's dream or two burglary Suspects on the wrong letter to success in order to eliminate confusion upon their approach to the scene of the crime only one officer should give the commands using the tone of authority and a clear and con this is the reason it is not advisable to say hands up until after the suspects are out of the car observed the officer does not search the car at random but follows an established pattern by completely covering the front portion of the car before proceeding to the rear each weapon and its description place of concealment and serial number if any is recorded by the officers in order to assist them in any future testimony in court in this first scene of a series of various Shakedown procedures the officer approaches and the suspect's right side in order to more easily control any overtact on the part of the suspect after the officer has satisfied himself regarded any possible concealed weapons the suspect may have on his person he requests further identification so both officers however should be on the alert for any attempt on the part of the suspects to discard incriminating evidence this search and procedure varies from the preceding one in that here each officer covers a suspect notice that while a searching officer thoroughly searches both the front and back of each suspect he also refrains from assuming any position which will place him in a line of Crossfire from his partner this method of search and procedure is suggested where a wall is not available the officer controls the suspect by placing his foot on top of the suspect's crossbeat before handcuffing him the passenger officer approaches to the right rear window of the suspect's car thus providing himself with protection while observing the location of the suspects he gives him substance the following commands police officers keep your hands in sight drop your keys in the floor and come out on this side during this entire episode the driver of the police car remains at his side of the car in order to one give Chase in case of an attempted getaway two he can cover one side of the suspect's car and three he has ready access to the radio mic if assistance is required before searching the suspects the officer rolls up the window in order to block any attempt to obtain a possible weapon from inside the car in the absence of a wall the officers ordered the suspects to lean against the top of the car before commencing their search now a description of the suspects and the license number of their car are checked over the 2A radio the officer is informed that is advocated to where traffic conditions permit in order to avoid any misunderstanding the pullover command should be given in a tonent manner which can be clear believe it or not but one of the major problems confronting the new policeman is how to handle female felony suspects in order to present any embarrassment either to the or you may utilize the suspect's belt as it doesn't appeared but make sure that the Bell is securely fastened behind his back foreign [Music] YouTube jail I don't know um YouTube's just not working today um just not coming up so we are on let's see Twitter although you really can't comment on Twitter on the black hole monoplex thanks guys we're on Facebook and we're on Twitch uh so those are different places that you can find us um and find this streaming uh the fact that we're not on uh YouTube means that maybe I can show this film without having to cut off the soundtrack we'll see we'll see what happens uh this is crack in the wall and it's on the film scanner that I have behind me I'm gonna bring this down there we go enjoy [Music] foreign [Applause] there are many people in the world who really don't understand or say they don't what is the great issue between the Free World and the Communist world let them come to Berlin 1945 the war in Europe is won and in July President Truman and prime minister Winston Churchill come to Potsdam to meet with Premier Stalin on the fate of post-war Germany the conquered country is petitioned into Allied and communist zones with Berlin placed under four power rule but the Western allies with Clement Atley replacing Winston Churchill failed to secure unlimited access to and from The Divided City 110 miles inside soviet-occupied East Germany this will be the last of the big three meetings as wartime allies soon become peacetime adversaries foreign 1945 Berlin is a skeleton City 85 percent of its buildings are damaged or totally destroyed tens of thousands of people have fled or been killed and those who remain must live in rubble and struggle against starvation [Music] new city a new nation a new future must rise out of the ruins the job is begun and Brick by Brick day by day it is done the people of West Berlin exhibit an independence and tenacity that will be severely tested many times in many crises soon the city is caught up in a surging post-war Prosperity that contrasts sharply with the sluggish pace of reconstruction in East Berlin foreign 1948 the Communists react blockading all land traffic into and out of West Berlin the Soviet leaders are determined to starve the Allies out of the city [Music] as England and France respond with a massive airlift of food and supplies planes land at three-minute intervals around the clock and more than 2 million tons of cargo are flown into West Berlin in operation vittles [Music] September 1949 the Communists yield the blockade is lifted through the 40s and 50s refugees stream out of East Germany riding trains that are pitifully slow and unbelievably crowded upwards of 2 000 people a day cross over the Border in search of Asylum and a new life 1960 the post-war total of refugees reaches 3 million persons for Walter ulbrich the East German leader and Nikita Khrushchev the Russian Premier the flight to Freedom is a source of growing concern and embarrassment West Berlin is a dangerous cancer says Kristoff a bone in my throat 2 A.M August 13 1961 east German border guards stream out of the night and work is begun on the wall [Music] foreign the barbed wire and barricades that slashed Berlin in two come to symbolize the ideological differences that divide the free and communist worlds [Music] [Applause] [Music] the action is in direct violation of post-war agreements guaranteeing free passage between the two sectors of the city [Applause] Edge and barricades still cannot halt the flight to Freedom refugees Find the Will and the way to cross into West Berlin entire families come and babies are passed through the barbed wire to eager Helping Hands foreign [Music] East Germans risked their lives and leave all their possessions behind as they flee through the wall the defectors include a member of the Communist people's police who throws down his gun and shouts Thank God I'm a free man the Communists step up their efforts to keep their people captive foreign is spent to seal off the 25-mile border between East and West Berlin [Music] residents of the city watch in disbelief as homes and buildings are demolished to make way for newer and higher concrete barriers [Music] days months and years go by the wall becomes a grim Specter that casts its Dark Shadow over both sides of the divided City families and loved ones separated by bricks and barricades must remain on opposite sides of the wall to look for each other to wave and to weep [Music] at night blinking lights spell out Words that cannot be spoken nor heard refugees continue to flee the Soviet zone but not all who seek Freedom find it a young boy is shot in the back climbing the wall and lies dying without medical help for an hour before he is carried away by East German police [Music] the youth's name is Peter factor and he is one of 65 refugees killed by border guards between 1961 and 1971. [Music] all are remembered in West Berlin monuments and markers are erected where each of the martyrs died in search of freedom and the people make certain that the memorials to the dead are never without flowers [Music] in 1963 President John Fitzgerald Kennedy comes to West Berlin to tell its people that they are not alone freedom is invisible and when one man is enslaved all are not free all all three men wherever they may live our citizens of Berlin and therefore as a free man I take pride in the words [Applause] [Music] West Berlin survives and industrially continues to prosper plants produce at Peak capacity and its goods are exported all around the world [Music] continue to be confrontations over Allied use of the Autobahn to Convoy troops and supplies across East Germany and into West Berlin communist border guards closed the roadway for varying periods of time there are threats in harassment warnings and attempted intimidation but after minor delays and inconvenience the Autobahn is opened and traffic is allowed to proceed into and out of the city foreign ly in February 1969 during a visit to West Berlin president Richard Nixon calls for Big Four negotiations aimed at ending the recurring crises over the island city after five months the Russians agree stations begin in 1970 in the same building where a Russian walkout in 1948 triggered the first post-war Berlin crisis attending the ambassadors from America Russia England and France a key issue is the free flow of people between East and West Berlin in the Years between 1961 and 1971 the Communists on special holidays have opened the wall to allow brief family visits the reunion spell out in human terms the tragedy of the divided City [Music] after 17 months and 240 hours of negotiations the big four reach an historic agreement Russia promises the Allies not to interfere with land traffic across East Germany and says it will also work to improve Communications between West and East Berlin in return the Soviet Union wins the right to diplomatic representation in West Berlin the Allies also agree to Russian demands that West Berlin not be considered a constitutional part of West Germany after the agreement is signed the Soviet Ambassador tells the other members of the big four all's well that ends well foreign yet only a crack the people of West Berlin still live in the shadow of the barbed wire and concrete barricades waiting for their nightmare to end their new life to begin [Music] foreign they're actually known as Duke Energy now and they uh are my Energy company I have no choice in the matter that's who they are uh so yeah screen News Digest was by Hearst and what they would do is they would package um a news item based on stuff that they had shot and released as uh newsreels or on television and um okay um and so then they would release them to schools and they would get sponsorship by Regional or local folks uh companies so I have some from North Carolina like Fayetteville and they're sponsored by Fayetteville Pepsi bottlers we've shown some from siba Gigi uh some foundries some power companies uh in the Appalachian Blue Ridge area um but yeah this first one from Duke power using classical gas uh which definitely YouTube would have uh shaken their finger at me Facebook might still do it but um if you're on Twitch I'm not sure what's the deal with that um and certainly this monoplex um black hole place that many of you are at um there's nothing that keeps us from showing that so there you go uh let's watch uh let's learn about American square dancing yeah I mean we saw the the dangers of dancing in dance little children yesterday let's see if uh this can uh do it more safely enjoy the pie and swing your partner's all [Music] little different we're around the circle hand over hand you plant your tater to sand the land to meet your honey in Promenade prominating till you come straight just a couple balances now let's watch a student group work out some of the patterns of the square dance with a traditional set of four couples each couple stands on one side of an imaginary 10 foot square the couple facing the orchestra is known as the head or first couple to their right is the second couple the third couple stands opposite the first and here is the home station of the fourth couple a gentleman always has his partner on his right the call is honor your partner now let's honor your corner then swing your partner for the swing Partners face each other each takes a short step sideways with the left foot the gentleman's right hand supports the lady in the small of her back her right hand lies Palm down in his left and her left hand rests in the upper part of his right arm their hips are almost touching Right feet side by side as they swing around taking short quick steps this walk step for beginners is simple and effective some dancers do a buzz step by pushing downward and backward with a toe of the left foot while pivoting on the right the yellow man left is a movement repeated many times during an evening of square dancing on the call alaman left gentlemen and Corner lady face each other and join left hands like this then they walk once around each other counterclockwise to their original home positions here's the element left again with a whole square at the end of this movement partners are facing each other so now since left hands are joined it's natural to extend right hand to partner and join hands at the call Grand right and left Partners pass right shoulder to right shoulder as they start around the circle the gentleman takes the left hand of the next lady in his left hand and they pass to the left of each other and so on until he meets his partner halfway around with his right hand in her right she reverses Direction and like a pair of skaters they join left hands underneath right the Promenade is simply a graceful walk or two-step to music back at home stations Partners face each other ladies curtsy gentlemen ball now with music let's put these fundamentals together in a simple square dance figure honor your partner under your corner don't swing your partner's all element live Grand right and left you meet your partner Halfway Around The Promenade her home [Music] now without music let's see how couples go visiting on the call first and third couples Promenade the outside ring these couples walk around outside the set while the other couples having taken two short steps to the center remain until both visiting couples have passed then return to station and turn to receive their visitors now it's right and left through with the couples you meet the two couples exchange places turn and return to position on the call right and left back the next call may be two ladies chain followed by a chain right back in the right and left through each gentleman passes this lady through the opposite couple then Partners join hands in this manner as he turns her in place the ladies pass each other by left shoulders and then move forward on the pivot as the gentleman turned backward for the two ladies chain the ladies pass in the center and join left hands with the opposite gents who turn them in place as before Nicole chain right back is executed in the same way and Returns the couples to a starting position let's watch the two ladies from above notice that they join right hands for a moment as they pass in the center and they join left hands then right hands with a gentleman for the turn the next call might be four hands up and around we go halfway around in a dozy though all drop hands gentlemen passes his partner through the opposite couple while he moves past the opposite lady right shoulder to right shoulder Partners join left hands moving counterclockwise the lady encircles the gentleman Halfway Around the gentleman passed right shoulders to each other each takes the opposite lady with the right hand and drops his partner's left hand now the lady encircles the opposite gentleman a full turnaround still counterclockwise she drops his hand and takes her partner's left hand finally the gentleman turned their Partners in place now keep your eye on one of the dancers as they go through another dozy doe four hands up and around we go halfway around in the dozy dough hurry up Jensen don't be slow one more change and home you go now slowly again each gentleman passes his partner through the opposite couple Partners join left hands and the lady moves halfway around her partner gentlemen pass right shoulder to right shoulder each taking the opposite lady's right hand and dropping his partner's left hand now each lady turns completely around the opposite gentleman drops his hand and takes her partner's left hand to complete the dozy Dome gentlemen turn their Partners in place now let's put these steps together to music first and third couples Islands in swing and prom and a handy outside ring the outside ring the outside ring right left through with a couple of your meat right left back two ladies chain chain right back chain right back four ends up and around we go and a halfway around I don't think so hurry up Jensen don't be slow one more chance [Music] now let's put some of these square dance fundamentals together with the pattern of a traditional square dance such as take a little peek holy swing elements to make the wig foreign [Music] take a little peek back take a little ticket but one of many square dances which are made up of simple fundamentals such as those we have seen demonstrated I'm setting up something here hold on just a sec what happened [Music] I have something on the scanner but I'm rewinding it so um we can watch it that's kind of cool um if you can hear me in the meantime um if you like what you're seeing today is kind of chaos but uh I don't even think you're on a platform where you can hit the thumbs up button but you can go to the ab Geeks Channel at avgeeks.com uh I hope to make that something that we can put comments on too so it would be something instead of going to a third party place um let me stop this real quick countdown cool all right uh anyways uh yeah so I'm slowly working on a way to to have something similar to the monoplex uh black hole but it would just be AV Geeks and so everybody could go there uh if YouTube doesn't behave we'll probably continue doing YouTube unless they've decided that they're not my friends anymore um anyway so behind me I have a film scanner uh and um we have something set up it's claymation it's uh uh about Will Vinton um early on this is before the California Raisins uh and the M Ms this is back when he was just making these kind of fun films so um there's a documentary coming out about Will Vinton at some point I know because I'd been talked to we did some scanning work for them um and the story is kind of sad uh Will Vinton uh had claymation and then it was turned into Leica and then he was kind of pushed out so anyways here is uh claymation enjoy okay three-dimensional animation is the art of making things move that don't usually I got an idea or making things that do move move in new and different ways what these men are animators they decide what to move and how to move it nothing in film animation moves by itself [Music] the animator is always in control of the medium well almost always clay [Music] [Music] foreign ton is a clay animator who's really into his media well for for several years while making live action and a few cell animated films I was working on a technique of clay animation it was a technique that Bob Gardner a sculptor and I worked on during college and So eventually we made a film called closed Mondays to sort of show off the animation techniques and to show off what clay could do as an animation medium how's that thank you for turning me on I am a replica of the model 505 until close Mondays clay was pretty much dismissed as a serious animation medium is called crumbling and impractical mutations rotations metamorphological mutations mutations Al comparative mutations mutations his co-creators won an Academy Award for the film clay animation came of age foreign [Music] [Music] Clay's really neat stuff it's basically the same plasticine that every preschooler uses except we use hundreds of pounds even for a short film we use our hands as our primary tools for smearing kneading smoothing texturing Clays are natural for simple figures and limited movement or big Blobby shapes [Music] most of our Productions require more refined use of the clay for greater detail and realism and for these things we use sculpting tools common to most kinds of clay modeling [Music] foreign like Rip Van Winkle and use 30 or 40 characters each one having to be specifically designed and unique qualities about it [Music] the characters range from seven or eight inches tall to 10 or 12 inches tall and occasionally we use different scales very small scaled characters for distance shots and even as large as life size for extreme close-ups [Music] the process uses a full range of colors even from the beginning the commercial colors of clay is just weren't adequate there wasn't enough variation in color and Hues and so forth and so we always have mixed our Clays starting usually from Ivory and adding colored pigment in the same way that one mixes paint and it allows us to get a complete spectrum of colors with different intensities and for really quite elaborate landscape sets this is a scene from Mountain Music [Music] I wonder what makes it work behind the scenes many elements are involved in making it work oh Sunset what directing yes this I am a genius I'm a genius how is that sound red that wasn't all the usual filmmaking problems lighting sound music scoring direction of actors editing then we have a few of our own that are unique to Clay animation are you hungry now well yeah I could I could use a damn sandwich nothing's going on there's that chicken what's going on what do you mean talking about my favorite chicken here I'm trying to find a sound here that is here comes the director can't hear anything hey if you guys finish that shot yet yes I think we have something uh VW oh okay well let's let's get on with the close-up now huh okay we'll set up that actually there really are a lot of similarities between our process and live action film production um both are shot in real space with the characters moving around in front of the camera within sets if a scene calls for mood and drama as many of the scenes in Martin the Cobbler did then we can light the sets just about the same way that a live action production crew would light a set foreign [Music] in fact the entire production is shot and soundtracks recorded with live actors before animating Begins the footage and sound are edited into a reference film which is used as a guide to animation as in this scene from Martin the Cobbler so you you keep looking out the window because listen complete original music scores are composed and recorded before animating begins we can turn on the lights in the room so that action can be executed in perfect synchronization with the music and we need to get into the camera movement the camera pulls away from the window back to reveal you know Martin and his cobbler bench maybe have something and have it right naturally right with the hammer or something he's actually a percussion right [Music] by editing the reference film The Voice and the music tracks together we're able to really get a precise guide for animation and sometimes we're able to edit the finished animation as in the fast cut sequence before the eruption scene in Mountain Music [Music] okay let's discuss Smart animator's Plan every action that will appear on the screen and characters are all designed with movement in mind you might want to do it that way or we've got a full we do yeah I really like the beard on Martin except that it may create some problems with uh doing the lip sync and moving the mouth smooth character movement begins with an Armature a stable flexible structure to support the figure in motion [Music] oh foreign [Applause] what oh the action described in the script is translated to storyboard form seen by scene then each scene is broken down into individual moves and moves are broken down frame by frame the distance that a character has to move in a given scene is divided by the number of frames in that move the formula is distance divided by frames that tells us how far the character has to move each frame how far the camera has to move in each frame is calculated in the same way there may be as many as 50 or 60 different elements that have to be moved every frame so you may be having the camera move tracking in towards a shot while it's tilting those have to be each frame at a time and then the characters are moved there may be one one character that's moving his mouth and hand and hands another character may be pulling on something and all together there may be as I say several dozen different elements of moving at each frame [Music] in a complex shot the camera may be panning tilting and tracking all at the same time with horizontal and vertical camera moves occurring between each exposure of film [Music] okay let's get ready for the next one it's 4 30. okay uh granny is gonna be moving forward a little more quick coming forward oh it's gonna be a good framing so in the Glamorous fast-paced world of filmmaking the animator stands alone or sits alone or with a friend and turns his world slowly one frame at a time okay okay just hold the foot out where it is so yeah your skirt can start coming down how about the pivot do you want to continue down just just move it forward positive the hand pauses okay how about uh just have her blank a little bit on this one blink down one this scarf is a little weird yet okay okay four here foreign skirt will come down right arm back a little bit begin to give it to the other direction and then we're gonna start easing out because she's going to stop anymore one more step so start easing out and on blinker yeah electric with concentration the animator is always alert to the possibility of error it may take several people many days to shoot one scene and in a single frame it can all be lost a successful scene is the result of dozens of elements working well together wait and there may be hundreds of scenes in one production thank you all working toward the closing moments of the final scene I'm coming with what took you so long I'm going with you to the festival together we can show these young people from in the old man we're super safe two pups in our Prime [Music] when at last all the scenes work well together that's a happy ending Happy Endings always make me cry don't cry [Laughter] oh wow laughs [Applause] I kind of think that was awesome that was really great um I've seen it before but I forgot and also in hindsight knowing kind of what happened with Will Vinton um and his his work um it's it's fascinating and then also seeing like Phil tippett's Mad God which was also stop-motion animation and a singular Vision um and seeing how it works in the world nowadays uh I guess uh was it Henry selig just did a stop-motion animation film with um Jordan peel I was on Netflix uh so it's still happening even in a CGI World um people are still doing stop-motion animation and the types of cameras they have now are actually more forgiving and things that you can do are uh actually very obtainable um kids can do it now on their phones if they have a little stand for their iPads and it's kind of fascinating I I heard a sad story uh a friend of mine had I guess there's a young kid that wanted to do stop motion animation and so he said well what you need is you need a camera and you need to set it up so it's constant and then you just do you know you adjust the clay take a picture adjust the clay take a picture adjust the clay and I certainly have transferred home movies where kids have done this and it's pretty fun it's really really awesome uh unfortunately what this kid did is they held the camera they moved the the image they took a frame they moved the image took a frame moved the image took a frame move the image took a frame and the camera wasn't standing still so it was this jarring like when they got it developed it was very sad um which in its own right I think is fascinating fascinating way to do it it just quickly becomes a bizarre flicker film but uh thanks for tuning in today today was a little bit of a challenge um but I appreciate you migrating to other platforms if you like what you saw buy us some coffee at ko-fi dot com slash AV Geeks or you can donate at patreon.com AV Geeks those are ways to support us so we can buy things like digitizing cards that don't quite work right um that need some more research on why they don't work uh and artist tape and film cans uh we have an intern right now who's working on recanting a bunch of rusted uh shut film cans and we're trying to get the vinegar bombs out the ones that are so uh vinegared and so uh deteriorated that they can't run through a scanner um so those are ways that you can support us and we will spend some of that coffee money on some of those things uh everybody have a great rest of your day and we'll be back again tomorrow everybody take care bye
