roof [Music] so [Music] so [Music] we're looking at a perpetual motion machine in normal operation this one's name is tommy [Music] the only thing more active is his curiosity tommy the world is a fascinating place things to feel to see to taste to smell to try it's an amazing learning process every child goes through yet he has no experience to judge the harmful from the safe here we go tommy nap time [Music] go to sleep darling [Music] hello oh hi sue coffee well tommy's napping but just one cup i'll be over in a few minutes [Music] so [Music] tommy's sleeping beautifully and i want to be home in case he wakes up i can only stay a minute well don't worry karen this will only take a minute so what did you have in mind well i have actually planned where's tommy he could be almost anywhere now [Music] if tommy's alone just imagine all the possible things he could get into [Music] perhaps he remembered the sweet taste of candy if he finds something that looks similar then only a minute alone and tommy's wonderful world may be gone i have a really good recipe for hamburger and macaroni my family's really enjoyed it what do you think about that oh what's in it well we have combine our two and a half quart casserole and a pound of ground beef one 10 ounce can of condensed chicken rice soup that we might be able to supply with something where's tommy if he's home alone that old appliance just happened to pick that time to develop a short [Music] anything could happen who could help him who could keep him safe if he's alone [Music] [Applause] why are you bringing the dessert i'd be happy to he said this recipe and it's a fantastic inexpensive recipe that's important oh that sounds good what should i bring where's tommy and what may arouse his curiosity even the most ordinary items may spell possible danger when a tummy is on the loose [Applause] and alone only for a minute so does that take care of it does we have something to drink a little person though how many have to go soon oh this only takes a minute what about iced tea fine that would be fine do you have a punch bowl i have two oh great you could have wiggled them paper cups no washing right [Music] where's tommy he could be exploring anywhere cleaning supplies supposedly put up in a safe place aren't always safe tommy knows that pulled out drawers make a nice ladder [Music] if he could plans for the weekend where's tommy the basement might be fun to explore where's tommy i've got to go he's going to be waking up any minute but since we're all going to be here this weekend why don't we make some plans oh that's a good idea let's take the kids and go to the park good good right all of a sudden where's tommy what if he visits the living room it's safe and secure nothing to really hurt or harm anyone here [Music] alone only for a minute [Music] where's tommy [Music] tommy could try filling the lawnmower with gasoline like daddy does [Music] maybe tommy could fix something with one of daddy's tools of course there's always that big wide wonderful world outside [Music] every child knows the world only as a fascinating place so never leave them alone even for the minute that always takes longer than expected take them with you or have a reliable babysitter come in [Music] everything's just fine great that's good dan yeah do you think you should double check it because have tommy where are you [Music] tommy mommy [Music] mommy [Music] mommy where are you [Music] where's your tommy where's your tommy hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we start off with a tragedy we don't know if tommy's dead we don't know if tommy was took or if tommy is just goofing off in somebody else's yard who knows who knows um great film though love it uh big fan of uh those 70s films somebody pointed out in the uh comments that it does remind you of what a 70s household look like it's filled with the colors and the wallpaper and the carpeting and the all that stuff and just kind of because i'm a child of the 70s so it just kind of warms part of my heart and my stomach to kind of see that time in that place although if i like walked into a house that looked like that it probably wouldn't have there'd probably be problems and reasons why it was left that way and would probably stink and be all mildewy but anyways um so many uh things to show today i collect old 16 millimeter films and i show them uh for your delight and horror uh you can tell uh i'm in a basement because there's a washer and dryer this is so jarring washer and dryer behind me i'm supposed to normally shut those doors so you can't see them but i just want you to know that we do have the ability to keep our clothes clean and we will take advantage of that um let's see we got a couple of safety films today but i'm going to go ahead and start off with something that's a little bit more fantastical this is the shrinking of treehorn enjoy [Applause] it's not benny hill [Music] [Applause] so [Music] something very strange was happening to triorn the first thing he noticed was that he couldn't reach the shelf in his closet that he'd always been able to reach before the one where he hid his candy bars and bubble gum then he noticed that his clothes were getting too big my trousers are all stretching or something said treehorn to his mother i'm tripping on them all the time that's too bad dear i do hope this cake isn't going to fall and my sleeves come down way below my hands so my shirts must be stretching too think of that i just don't know why this cake isn't rising the way it should mrs aberneel's cakes are always nice they always rise tree horn started out of the kitchen he tripped on his trousers which indeed did seem to be getting longer and longer at dinner that night treehorn's father said do sit up treehorn i can hardly see your head i am sitting up this is as far up as i come i think i must be shrinking or something i'm sorry my cake didn't turn out very well it's very nice dear said treehorn's father politely by this time treehorn could hardly see over the top of the table sit up here i am sitting up it's just that i'm shrinking what dear i'm shrinking getting smaller if you want to pretend you're shrinking that's all right as long as you don't do it at the table but i am shrinking said treehorn don't argue with your mother treehorn oh he does look a little smaller maybe he is shrinking nobody shrinks said treehorn's father well i'm shrinking look at me treehorn's father looked at treehorn why you're shrinking look emily triarn is shrinking he's much smaller than he used to be oh dear first it was the cake and now it's this everything happens at once i thought i was shrinking said treehorn and he went into the den to turn on the television set treehorn liked to watch television he lay on his stomach in front of the television set and watched one of his favorite programs he had 56 favorite programs during the commercials treehorn always listened to his mother and father talking together unless they were having a boring conversation if they were having a boring conversation he listened to the commercials now he listened to his mother and father he really is getting smaller what will we do what will people say well they'll say he's getting smaller i wonder if he's doing it on purpose just to be different why would he want to be different tree horn started listening to the commercial the next morning treehorn was still smaller his regular clothes were much too big to wear he rummaged around in his closet until he found some of his last year's clothes they were much too big too but he put them on and rolled up the pants and rolled up the sleeves and went down to breakfast treehorn liked cereal for breakfast but mostly he liked cereal boxes he always read every single thing on the cereal box while he was eating breakfast and he always sent in for the things the cereal box said he could send for today on the cereal box was a very special offer of a very special whistle that only dogs could hear treehorn did not have a dog but he thought it would be nice to have a whistle that dogs could hear even if he couldn't hear it even if dogs couldn't hear it it would be nice to have a whistle just to have it he decided to eat all of the cereal in the box so he could send in this morning for the whistle his mother never let him send in for anything until he had eaten all of the cereal in the box [Music] tree horn filled in all of the blank spaces for his name and address and then he went to get his money out of the piggy bank on the kitchen counter but he couldn't reach it i certainly am getting smaller thought treehound he climbed up on a chair and got the piggy bank and shook out a dime you know how i hate to have you climb up on the chairs deer tree horn put the piggy bank in the bottom kitchen drawer that way i can get it no matter how little i get he thought he found an envelope and put a stamp on it and put the dime in the box top end so he could mail the letter on the way to school the mailbox was right next to the bus stop it was hard to walk to the bus stop because his shoes kept slipping off but he got there in plenty of time shuffling he couldn't reach the mailbox slot to put the letter in so he handed the letter to one of his friends moshi and asked him to put it in how come you can't mail it yourself stupid because i'm shrinking i'm shrinking and i'm too little to reach the mailbox that's a stupid thing to do you're always doing stupid things but that's the stupidest treehound tried to get on the school bus everyone was pushing and shoving all the way back on the bus step all the way back let that little kid on treehorn was helped onto the bus you can stay right up here next to me if you wanna because you're so little it's me treehorn said treehorn to his friend the bus driver ah you do look like treehorn at that only smaller treehorn isn't that little i am treehorn i'm just getting smaller nobody gets smaller you must be treehorn's kid brother what's your name treehorn said treehorn first time i ever heard of a family named treehorn said nothing when he went into class his teacher said nursery school is down at the end of the hall honey i'm treehorn said prior if your tree horn why are you so small because i'm shrinking i'm getting smaller well i'll let it go for today but see that it's taken care of before tomorrow we don't shrink in this class after recess treehorn was thirsty so he went down the hall to the water bubbler he couldn't reach it and he tried to jump up high enough [Music] he still couldn't get a drink but he kept jumping up and down trying why tree horn that isn't like you jumping up and down the hall just because you're shrinking it does not mean you have special privileges what if all the children in the school started jumping up and down in the halls i'm afraid you'll have to go to the principal's office treehorn so treehorn went to the principal's office i'm supposed to see the principal said treehorn to the lady in the principal's outer office it's a very busy day please check here on this forum the reason you have to see him that will save time be sure to put your name down too that'll save time and write clearly that will save time treehorn looked at the form there were many things to check but treehorn couldn't find one that said being too small to reach the water bubbler he finally wrote in shrinking the principal looked at the form and then he looked at treehorn then he looked at the form again uh i can't read this it looks like uh shirking you're not shirking are you treehorn you can't have any sharkers here you know we're a team and we all have to do our very best it says shrinking said treehorn i'm shrinking oh uh shrinking eh well no i'm very sorry to hear that treyhorn when you were right to come to me that's what i'm here for to guide not to punish but to guide to guide all the members of my team to solve all their problems but i don't have any problems i'm just shrinking well i want you to know that i'm right here when you need me treehound and i'm glad i was here to help you uh a team is only as good as its coach hey goodbye treehorn uh if you have any more problems come straight to me and i'll help you again a problem isn't a problem once it's solved right [Music] by the end of the day treehorn was still smaller at the dinner table that night he sat on several cushions so he could be high enough to see over the top of the table he's still shrinking heaven knows i've tried to be a good mother well maybe we should call a doctor i did i called every doctor in the yellow pages but no one knew anything about shrinking problems maybe he'll just keep getting smaller and smaller until he disappeared no one disappears said treehorn's father positively that's right they don't but no one shrinks either finish your carrots tree horn the next morning treehorn was so small he had to jump out of bed on the floor under the bed was a game he'd pushed under there and forgotten about he walked under the bed to look at it it was one of the games he'd sent in for from a cereal box he had started playing it a couple of days ago but he hadn't had a chance to finish it the game was called the big game for kids to grow on treehorn sat under the bed to finish playing the game where had he left off he remembered he just had to move his piece back seven spaces on the board he was so small now that the only way he could move the spinner was by kicking it so he kicked it it stopped at number four that meant he could move his piece ahead four spaces on the board the only way he could move the piece forward now was by carrying it so he carried it it was pretty heavy he walked along the board to the fourth space it said congratulations and up you go advance 13 spaces tree horn started to carry his piece forward the 13 spaces but the piece seemed to be getting smaller or else he was getting bigger well i don't want to get too big thought treehorn so he pulled the game out from under the bed and moved the piece ahead slowly from one space to the next getting bigger with each space until he was his own regular size again then he put the spinner and the pieces and the instructions and the board back in the box for the big game for kids to grow on and put it in his closet if he ever wanted to get bigger or smaller he could play it again even if it was a pretty boring game treehorn went down for breakfast and read the new cereal box it said you could send for a hundred balloons don't put your elbows on the table while you're eating deer look said tree heart i'm my own size now my own regular size that's nice dear it's a very nice size i'm sure and if i were you i wouldn't shrink anymore be sure to tell your father when he comes home tonight he'll be so pleased that night treehorn was watching tv as he reached over to change channels he noticed that his hand was bright green he looked in the mirror that was hanging over the television set his face was green his ears were green his hair was green he was green all over i don't think i'll tell anyone if i don't say anything they won't notice do turn the volume down a little dear your father and i are having the smedley's over to play bridge do comb your hair before they come won't you dare [Music] so [Music] so yes everybody noticed tim's tv uh famous for benny hill among other uh television british television shows that made it over here um but then very quickly we noticed that the voices the narrations uh were american and and i was also kind of questioning like wait a minute like why is it american and so this happens sometimes they get dubbed even when it's english they get dubbed with american voices so um it's fascinating they must have read a script because they said water bubbler which is a british term for a water fountain so it's pretty funny all right this next film uh so when i watch a film normally i always make notes on the can sometimes so that i can eventually transcribe them into a database although that doesn't always happen but this one says warm pd 1970s awesome warm is my term for a film that is beginning to fade red and red shift a little bit but still has a little bit of color left um and here so here it is it's uh i haven't transcribed it onto the thing yet but i will um this is made for police officers and highway patrol by the u.s department of transportation and the national highways traffic safety administration it's visual detection of driving while intoxicated so here we go the information in this film applies to nighttime patrol only but since night time can affect your ability to detect a particular driving behavior this film has been photographed during the day to present the clearest picture for visual detection of driving while intoxicated 52.1 52 david 5 station 52.1 go ahead 52 x-ray 2. david's five stations when you're on patrol at night and you see something like this what do you think that's right there's a good chance that driver is dwi driving while intoxicated certain things drivers do certain cues like weaving alert you to the possibility of dwi but of course he could be weaving because he's tired or having trouble with the car so from your experience what are the chances he is dwi 100 out of 100 50 out of 100 10 out of 100 it's hard to say isn't it but now we can say statistically when you see weaving at night 60 times out of 100 you're looking at someone dwi someone with a blood alcohol concentration of at least 0.10 in fact for the first time we can see all of the main cues we normally associate with dwi and say with confidence what the chances are the person driving is dwi and we can do it now because the national highway traffic safety administration contracted with a company called anacapa sciences to find out they interviewed hundreds of officers they analyzed over a thousand arrest reports throughout the u s and they came up with a hundred and thirteen different driving behaviors related to dwi then they went out on night time patrol and they matched driving behaviors with the blood alcohol concentration of the drivers and they found out they could reduce that list down to 20 and still account for over 90 percent of what you see and think of as possible driving while intoxicated now you're looking at those twenty cues right now look familiar by the way just to let you know how confident we are that these are the twenty best cues they were put on a small card called a dwi detection guide and they were given to hundreds of officers throughout the us now after four 000 stops regardless of location roadway age or sex of the driver city or country the card was almost always right for example just as we know that 60 times out of a hundred weaving in a regular pattern indicates dwi when you see someone drifting within a lane or across lanes what are the chances he has a blood alcohol concentration or bac of at least 0.10 the answer is 50. 50 times out of 100 he's dwi now if he was drifting and then compensated abruptly at the last second in other words if he was swerving we now know the chances are 55 times out of 100 he's dwi how about turning with a wide radius he starts out wide cuts the corner close and ends up wide well he's really worth looking at because sixty five times out of a hundred he's drunk now here's another one we've all seen before the tires are remaining consistently on that center line or they could be consistently on one of the lane markers now we've got his number two he's a 45 45 times out of a hundred he's dwi of course as you well know if he's straddling the center line or a lane marker that's much worse and his number is going to reflect it he's a 65. in this case as with the cues you've seen so far alcohol is probably affecting his steering ability but alcohol has other effects too doesn't it for example in this film everyone has their lights off because it's daytime but when you see a car with the headlights off at night thirty times out of a hundred he's dwi simply because he's concentrating on driving and he isn't really aware of what's going on around him now the same thing would be true if he was signaling in a way that was inconsistent with his driving actions though you can't see it very well he signaled left and he turned right and we know he's a forty and if he has a slow response to a traffic signal that's always made you suspicious in the past but now we also know he's a forty here's one that's a 60 and he isn't doing anything his face is close to the windshield his eyes are fixed wide open and they look like a pair of fried eggs he just appears to you to be drunk and sixty times out of a hundred he is now if he takes off and accelerates or decelerates faster than he has to for the traffic conditions or if he alternates speeding up and slowing down you've got a thirty as you well know when you're dealing with dwi seeing more than one cue happens all the time but what we now know statistically is that if you add ten points to the q with the highest number that's what the chances are that this driver is dwi he appeared drunk and that's a 60. the other q is only a 30. we add 10 to 60 and we now know this driver will be dwi 70 times out of 100 which is just a scientific way of saying what you already know when you see more than one cue it means more by the way what does it mean when someone is breaking erratically or in this case riding the brakes first of all it means that 45 times out of 100 he has a bac of at least 0.10 but just as with speeding up and slowing down alcohol has impaired his ability to control the speed of the car now here's another example of that by the time he came to a stop he had stopped inappropriately in other words on top of the crosswalk and we now know that's a 35. another example of stopping inappropriately is this one he stops for a green light obviously what's happened here is that alcohol has impaired his ability to process information the same thing can cause stopping without cause in a traffic lane as you know we don't see this very often but when you do fifty times out of a hundred he's drunk and fifty times out of a hundred if he's dawdling or poking along slower than 10 miles an hour below the limit he's drunk too what about following too closely you already know it's a good indicator of dwi but how good is it now remember as with all of these cues we're only talking about nighttime patrol if you guessed 50 50 you were right okay how about turning abruptly or illegally by turning sharply from the wrong lane statistically it's a good indicator but it's not at the top it's a 35 driving into opposing traffic like going the wrong way on a one-way street or driving into crossing traffic is a little higher these are 45 this guy's a 55. whether he's going straight through turn-only lanes or driving on the shoulder anytime he's driving on other than the designated roadway 55 times out of 100 he's had a little too much now if he almost strikes an object or a vehicle he's a 60. and since he's piling up multiple cues he's really a 70 isn't he now maybe you know all that maybe you're really good at guessing the chances a driver is drunk or sober just by what you saw him do but now you don't even have to guess [Music] wow i was expecting some sort of outro there instead of so now you don't even have to guess um so lots and lots i have lots of police training films and a couple that are like this that deal with how can you tell when somebody's drunk um and so far more that are even grittier and deal with other subjects that i probably won't show on here but that one is light enough um and yeah kudos whoever said that looked like pauline behind the wheel very funny all right um i think it's time to see peter jennings uh hocking uh some snowmobiles this is a great film that i found somebody gave me a bunch of films and had water damage most of them but this one was relatively okay uh also before i get started with that i just wanted to say you can if you like what you're watching today hit like or subscribe or follow and you can buy us coffee i love coffee it's good i'm not even a coffee snob like i just drink it black doesn't have to be expensive coffee in fact the more expensive it is then not so much into that um i was drinking coffee before starbucks really hit it big so um if you give if you uh pay for coffee please know that it will go far it will extend well and it's basically a delivery system for caffeine so here is the inn in winter hard fast bruising competition that demands the ability to take it and to dish it out [Music] it's action swift flowing action that brings you to your feet shouting whether you picked a winner or not it's competition that calls for skillful maneuvering accuracy and agility and always that last extra ounce of effort that final determination to come home a winner it's soaring competition that demands poi and grace [Music] split-second timing and precision and sometimes a whole lot of heart yes it's the competition of sports that really puts success in living and wherever there's thrills and action there you'll find the in crowd they know what's in in the world of sports spring summer or fall and in the last couple of years they've discovered something new they've discovered that the inn thing in [Music] winter is snowmobiling i'm peter jennings and i'd like to emphasize what you've just seen there is a new dimension in the winter sports scene and it's picking up followers just about every day the snow falls i'm talking about the thrills the kicks the fun that snowmobiling has brought to winter sports enthusiasts all across north america i found out about it when i went to do research for a broadcast on the rising sport of snowmobile racing and i confess i even ended up racing one myself it proves that you don't have to be a pro to enjoy racing i may not have known exactly what i was doing but i was well dressed for it [Music] not a bad start at all [Music] the object of course is to break out of the pack [Music] [Applause] up and over and into the woods for a 35 mile cross country everywhere the inn people are out watching snowmobile races they come to share the excitement and watch the pros [Music] [Applause] [Music] here's the man who's the top racer of his time [Music] watch him in the slalom at the world championship in montreal in slalom it's timing that counts it's knowing just how far to push your machine move in this count cut every flag just right and you pick up precious seconds to come home a winner for the pros there's a lot of meticulous preparation it's all part of the action [Music] and planning pays off especially on the oval where it's man against man [Applause] and the crowd really loves it [Applause] this is the ultimate in competition [Music] after one or two times around the court the racer knows the best position on every corner he picks his [ __ ] and he fights to make it every time on every track the slot is different it varies with the capabilities of your machine and with the ability of your [Music] opponents [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] to remain in the slot you have to shift your weight at the precise moment so you can take a turn at maximum speed without losing your position [Applause] [Music] [Music] um [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it's this sense of timing that separates the champions from the runners up the checkered flag that ends the race usually marks the start of fun but runners-up and also rans and even those who didn't race at all have discovered that snowmobiles attract the in-crowd the crowd that knows how to enjoy themselves [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] my [Music] [Music] uh [Music] [Music] [Applause] while thousands of snowmobile owners who never thought of racing find winter fun they never dreamed of [Music] so [Music] [Music] wow did i say never thought of racing you can't get away from it and do you know why because the heart-pounding thrill of car racing is brought to winter sports by snowmobiles the hard fast bruising competition of football is there in every race every exciting calculated chance that's taken in any sport is here for both spectators and competitors [Music] it's the sport that's put some teeth into winter activity [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] one more [Music] okay [Applause] whether you're a driver fighting for that checkered flag or a spectator cheering your favorite at day's end you're part of the group that knows where the action is enjoy it lives it and loves it [Music] you're one of the lively ones who's learned that the in thing in winter is the snowmobile [Music] [Applause] the in thing being where the ladies are dancing and there's plenty of beer and drinking and carousing it's so funny how much footage is dedicated to that like that's just as much of as important as being out in the cold and snowmobiling um so yeah peter jennings canadian back in the day before uh i think he was doing canadian news but um before he was on abc i believe this could be like late 60s early 70s um but i have a couple of snowboarding or snow snowmobiling films but many of them are water damaged um so there's other there's like one that said a speed record um and there's some other competition ones there obviously they show these uh dealers would show these to their clients to get them excited about the new models of snowmobiles yeah well uh it's getting close to that time um so let's say farewell for the weekend i hope everybody has a good weekend and uh that you take care of yourself um as always we look to inside the film can to to learn about life so please rewind and love each other and you know take care of yourself reach out to somebody um you know sometimes people aren't doing so great so it's good to to reach out and say hi and just say check in say how everything's going um because that has certainly i've done i've been on both ends of that and so it's it's very much appreciated so um and uh as i said my wife uh paid somebody to do a new version a new circa 80s version of shake hands with danger and i edited to it and i finally got it rendered out so we'll say every friday we start off our friday afternoon with a reminder about shaking hands with danger with a disco bend to check back here in a it so don't touch anything okay hey get down from there [Music] now [Music] what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be mincemeat by now what have i told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well i told them not to touch anything all right i guess i wasn't thinking you weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety here shake hands with danger shake hands with danger meet a man you ought to know i used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger joe [Music] i was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my tool box and i'll take myself a look i climbed up on a dozier with my mechanics pride said you can keep it running friend while i poke around inside [Music] three finger joe although i learned a lesson i forgot it soon enough the nicks and burns and scratches showed the young ones i was tough till another morning i was grinding on some steel my other hand got careless and fed my skin into the wheel shake hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are [Music] just to save themselves a minute i've seen them lose at all i've watched them caught in trouble seen them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lifetime with the blues [Music] [Applause] [Music] me [Music] [Music] walk around inside [Music] move around inside [Music] shake hands with danger and some friends i used to know compared to them i'm lucky to be just [Music] [Laughter] three-fingered i forgot to say i'm actually doing a hunt library screening tonight at six o'clock so if you want to see films about germs and how they're spread in case you're wondering you really don't have a clue about how viruses are spread tune in tonight and we have an expert who will talk more about it all right everybody take care bye oh
