hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show you're watching this because we don't have internet or power at the av geeks compound and this was a pre-recorded show um this film that we're about to watch is long but it's it's one i've been wanting to show for quite a while so i hope you enjoy it as much as i do uh sadly i bought this on ebay and um showed it many times but now it's so vinegared and curled that i can't really screen it anymore so thankfully i did a digitized copy of it it does kind of jitter a little bit because it was beginning to shrink but this is escape and this was made for soldiers to compel them to when they're captured as a prisoner of war uh what they can do to try to escape uh and how that is their main objective um this brings up a lot of uh memories of the film great escape and also hogan's heroes and i really dig the enemies helmets they're really pretty awesome so anyways enjoy escape and hopefully i will see you again live at some point i might be able to follow comments depending on the status of my phone and and all that so enjoy to escape the range of conditions that are likely to be encountered by the pow a soldier is a fighting man first and foremost and remains for all circumstances if a soldier despite his most valiant efforts is captured he never surrendered he must continue to resist the enemy physically to the limit of his ability and beyond that he must continue to fight mentally he is still a member of the united states army he is still bound by his duty and by the laws of his service and his country he must give no more than his he must defeat every plot of the enemy to break down his resistance he must make every effort to escape the duty of a united states soldier is unalterable to fight and defeat the enemies of the united to keep states with his country men on the march but not against the enemy these men are prisoners of war american soldiers who have been captured by the enemy now being marched back to a prison camp not a pretty picture not a pleasant subject to think about but still our men do get captured through no fault of their own in spite of all they can do to prevent it and when they are captured they end up in places like this a prison camp deep within enemy territory miles from nowhere feeling lonely depressed and useless useless to themselves and to anyone else but even when a man is captured he didn't always end up here and once he is here he needn't always stay take sergeant james j anderson for instance he's had opportunities to escape some of them very good ones but here he is why part of the reason is psychological when a man is captured he is usually in a state of shock his fortunes have changed so rapidly that his mind cannot make the adjustment one minute he was fighting the enemy the next he is a prisoner he is confused bewildered dejected as sergeant anderson was an unfortunate state of mind because while a man is still here close to the front lines his chances for escape are better than they will ever be again no matter how tired he may be he is usually still in good physical condition he is nearer to his own lines than he will be for a long time to come he is not very well guarded his guards were not trained to handle prisoners they were trained for combat besides there are not very many of them in a frontline outfit there is need for every man only a minimum number of soldiers can be spared to escort prisoners to the rear often some of these guards are lightly wounded men who are being sent back to the rear area for treatment if the odds are ever in favor of the prisoner it is here in the midst of frontline area confusion where everyone including the guards is forced to consider his own safety first this is it a tailor-made chance for escape the man who is on his toes is ready to grab the first opportunity the sooner the better there may not be another as good for a long time there are always chances for the prisoner who has resolved to escape and is looking for the right moment the difficulty is that only a few men are psychologically prepared to take advantage of these opportunities when they present themselves only a very few unfortunately sergeant anderson was not one of them looking back i can remember other opportunities which i might have seized as well as the next man there was that sergeant from sea company who was next to me on the march he was a smart cookie stretch out to column stretch it out stretch out he really had it figured as we approach the curve in the road he got us to stretch out the column because he knew this would momentarily put him out of sight of the rear guards as we went around the curve when the time came he knew what to do he was never missed then later in the day there was that tough little private he was another soldier who kept his eyes opened in his mind working he'd noticed that when trucks passed the column they threw up a heavy cloud of dust to most of the men the dust was just another annoyance choking up your lungs and getting in your eyes to this soldier it meant something else yeah he took a chance so did the others who got away or escape can be risky but i found out that it's also risky to spend time in an enemy prison camp you risk not only your body but your mind escape becomes more and more important i keep remembering the night we spent at the division enclosure that was one of the best chances i ever had we were still quite close to the front and there wasn't much of a moon the enclosure was just the field with some barbed wire around it and there were only a couple of guards patrolling the outside if only i'd been on my toes i could have gotten away just as easily as those two soldiers from baker company they carefully timed the movements of the nearest guard and knew exactly how long it took him to walk his post at the right moment they took off they were gone before the guard returned did they get back probably we were still only a few miles from our own lines but sergeant anderson was still there the next morning when the trucks came for them so were two other men from his unit smitty and tex transportation yeah looks like we're right that's right transportation but it only meant that they would now be moving much faster to the rear every man who is a prisoner has thoughts of escape getting on the trucks they began to realize that from here on escape would be much tougher and they were right about that from now on they would be in the hands of military police who were specially trained for guarding prisoners escape would be tougher yes but never impossible remember that the further a prisoner is moved from the combat zone the more difficult it will be to work back to his own lines he must keep his eyes and ears open and stay alert he must not give up hope because there is always the chance that something will turn up at the most unexpected moment that something may happen which will provide the opportunity hey look airplane yeah they're ours that's what's worrying me how come they're riding in enemy trucks in enemy territory oh yeah i only hope they don't see us they do they have ways look i'm going with him at ease huh okay most men have the initiative to escape nobody likes being a prisoner it takes courage of course quick thinking and a little luck but mostly it takes the will to escape that's what that corporal in the boxcar had this train ride looked like the last lap the men sensed that the next stop would be their permanent home a prison camp and they could feel the miles piling up behind putting more and more distance between them and their own lives most of them were feeling pretty gloomy but one man was thinking of other things more constructive things do you suppose we can get these guys to punch around that wire fence and sort of kibbits over the card game they don't understand that game that some do they have to win the standard to watch it i don't get it if you can manage to get him over there by that partition sort of keep him in between those guards and myself okay so yeah let's watch the card game i'm betting on the guy on the left well i can't understand that game sure you can it's poker giveaway i guess it makes them nervous they can't stand a little kiwi good boy yes the corporal even chose the correct side of the car so he wouldn't land in front of an approaching train and to also make it more difficult for the guard to fire at it initiative and determination that's what it takes but what about sergeant anderson sometimes it's hard to remember how long i've been here those guys that made their escape they must be back in the states by now eating steak and ice cream and sleeping in beds with clean white sheets well this is hardly a place i'd choose for a vacation it's not exactly a pleasure resort the accommodations leave something to be desired in the way of comfort the food is bad and there isn't much of it about the only thing a man has plenty of in this place is time [Music] time to think of all the people you haven't seen for months or years time to think of all the things you might be doing if only you were somewhere else time to rot if you don't watch yourself time to remember the guys who had guts enough to break out of this place and there were some who did fred wilson was one his plan was so simple that the guards are probably still trying to figure out what happened he simply waited until a work gang had been formed and when the guards back was turned he joined in with the other men he chose a day when the work detail was heavier than normal and since he was not assigned to this detail his name was not on the list he was careful to make his move after the roster had been checked because he knew each man had to be accounted for in that way he was able to get outside the gates without being listed on the roster upside down abram green here it was customary for a roll call and a head count to be taken by the guards at the end of the day's work when each man on the list was accounted for they were ready to march the detail back to the pw compound for the night boss bro since wilson's name was not on the list he was never missed then there were the surveyors that's the name everybody remembers those three fellows by they really had a lot of guts and even more imagination somehow they managed to get a hold of an engineer's tape a sledge and some wooden stakes with these they set to work measuring out a center line for a road the guards assumed of course that they had been told to stake out the area because they knew that prisoners never did any more work than they had to [Music] a fantastic plan maybe but it seemed to be going well while they were still inside the [Music] compound even the guards at the gate were taken in there was one however who did seem a little suspicious that was their most anxious moment but by keeping their heads and not getting rattled they were able to keep right on going while they were sweating it out the guards were joking about the prisoners asking them to work but it was no joke to the guards later when they began to realize what had really happened [Music] hmm [Music] of course these escapes had some repercussions agnes that is cigarette please i hope you men find our camp reasonably comfortable yes yes now step forward please what is the complaint we need more ciao ciao what is this grub eat food oh yes of course your american expressions are so broad please make arrangements for more uh child any other complaints step forward please i need a new pair of shoes sir oh yes i'm sure we can do something about that his name please yes i think your men have been intercepting our red cross food packages sir oh i think you are mistaken but i shall certainly look into the matter any other men i need more straw for my mattress strong how many men need more straw it will be arranged more straw for these men now men i want you to do me a little favor as you know recently several of your men have escaped that is not good not good for me possibly not good for you such occurrences may suggest to my superiors that my discipline is too lacks in fact they might even decide to replace me they would not want that would they now all i want you meant to do is to sign this paper giving me your word you will not attempt to escape come come step forward please you can't sign that what is that you can't sign that it's a parole and why can't he sign it it's against our regulations but you happen to be under our regulations now that doesn't matter sir you can't force a man to do something that's against the regulations of his own country is that so not legally not according to the geneva convention oh yes the geneva convention very well if that is how you choose to repay my kindness you shall have to try other measures these men who complain you have their names yeah place them in solitary confinement for seven days the charge insubordination oh yes and include the sergeant who quotes the geneva convention as for the others put them on bread and water for three days it so happens sergeant we are perhaps it was the punishment the cruelty and the rank injustice of it which made me decide that i couldn't stay here any longer i simply had to get out all kinds of ideas were running through my mind then suddenly it clicked that's it a ladder and then i thought the ladder we used would be black but the ladder to be used as a decoy should be light-colored so the guards can spot it without any trouble yeah well it's okay with the escape committee go ahead sarge thanks now what we need is two short ladders and a plank say i think i can get one ladder from the tool house okay smitty and i'll dig up some boards and make the other one see this what is it a key to the tool house and there's a light colored ladder there thanks euro wizards uh now the ladder i can shove back to fall down so the guards can't tell where we go over the fence but what are we gonna do with that plank i've got that figured we'll tie a rope to the far end and pull it from the other side when we get out yeah that'll get rid of it that'll work fine all right sarge let's go over those points again well we save up all the food we can once we're out we travel by night hide and rest during the day that's right unless you get hold of civilian clothes then you can travel by day posing as natives in that case you'll need forged identification papers we'll fix them up for you before you leave fine and once across the border we contact the american consulate general and don't forget don't talk to anyone about the details of your escape save those for the army out of shape or the intelligence officers talking to unauthorized persons get have chances of escape for others i've got you make sure you pass these things on to texas smitty what's the matter aren't you hungry i'm saving up for a rainy day yeah you won't have long to wait around here that's what i figured now avoid this main road and this railroad they're probably patrolled you better go around the cities they're too dangerous okay and whatever you do don't accept a lift from anybody the only people with vehicles in this country are on official business we'll remember i guess that's all here we have papers thanks don't use them unless you have to we won't remember everything is set to start at 2200 hours shark after that you're on your own right good luck [Music] [Music] [Music] um [Music] my [Music] [Music] my [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] hear anything not yet where's smitty he's ready hope jones doesn't have any trouble that ladder let's have some noise [Applause] there it started yeah [Music] oh [Music] it's good okay okay let's go [Music] so [Music] [Music] well what are we stopping for a road let's get across cam it's too straight here get down i see what you mean those lights would have picked us up sure shooting there's a curve down here come on so what's the matter do we have to cross those tracks yeah we can make it if we crawl okay at a time uh boy i'm pushed oh me too my dogs are killing me why don't we stop here for the day uh too dangerous they'll be searching along the streams okay just let me get my face wet don't drink that water we'll find a spring somewhere don't worry hey you guys it's smitty boy you sure gave us a turn pretty good huh yeah you look just like a native here put these on where'd you get them swiped them from a farm about a mile back what happens if they catch us in these you got your dog tags yeah i got them and you got nothing to worry about you got identification to prove you're a soldier here let's have a last look at this map which way we head southeast that's this way it's the general direction of this highway although we can't use the highway itself we have to use the back roads and fields seems to me the river's our first objective yeah and then we head for the mountains right you got it memorized yeah i can see it with my eyes closed hey what are you doing you guys are pretty touchy about maps that might show military information we wouldn't want to be shot as spies would we well now that you mention it that reminds me let's not go looking for trouble we don't take any chances we don't have to take caution that's our motto we've only got one job ahead of us that's to get out of this country okay okay okay one more thing tex they don't chew gum around here huh oh good for the eyes good for the stomach too look what i got what are we going to do with them these will give us an occupation we can work on the roads thanks i think you got something there that way we can travel by day what my [Music] there it is just across that open field the border and freedom but even with freedom in sight anything can happen [Music] this isn't the time to be over anxious not now more than ever keep the odds in your favor wait for darkness and concealment this is the moment every man taken prisoner hopes for freedom ahead for those who dare to make a try for it let's go [Music] as a prisoner of war a soldier is still a member of the army fighting team united states forces will make every effort to free him or to assist his escape it is the duty of every soldier who has been captured to use the prisoner's most effective weapon escape obey the orders of the senior military american present commissioned or non-commissioned refused to give more than name rank service number and date of birth refuse to give parole refuse to cooperate for propaganda broadcasts signing of petitions or other purposes inimical to the interests of the united states program live and act during his captivity so that there will be no doubt but that he held to his mission of by planning and executing reasonable attempts to escape the soldier may reach freedom even if his first attempts fail they are never useless any well-planned escape or attempted escape requires the enemy to utilize additional troops both in guarding prisoners of war and in searching for those who have escaped escape can save you from this uh next film is uh features two celebrities and uh one of them you recognize jack klugman and the other one is peter ostrom who was charlie in willy wonka on the chocolate factory and what's interesting about this is that peter didn't really appear a lot of films um he was only in willy wonka and then he was in some very basic uh like plays and things like that prior to willy wonka and this film came that you're about to see actually came out before uh willy wonka came out um and i actually showed this to uh two of the wonka kids who came through raleigh uh last year and uh they forwarded it to peter and uh yeah so this is kind of a unique rarity and it's a very weird film about using long distance and direct dialing so enjoy this [Music] honey i'll warm it up while everybody's getting dressed okay okay honey did the help find a fremont hey mom any chance get my laundry done this afternoon before i leave for school where did you leave your laundry you saw it this morning oh good heavens i thought that was his rock collection he must have a hundred pounds of stuff in that bag how'd it get so stiff oh come on stop that oh come on mom no i got all my jeans and sweatshirts and underwear oh we got a little raunchy and so forth in the normal parts of things well in a normal source of things my dear young friend our dryer is going on the fritz so you'll have to take care of things yourself holy smoke mama i can't go back to school without any clothes well you just march yourself over the laundromat and read the simple instructions and you'll have clean clothes to go back to school with my deprived young man look i don't want to defend a sweaty young procrastinator honey but isn't it kind of late in the game to start teaching them to be along this well honey it's really nothing all you have to do is read the directions and those raunchy clothes become civilized in no time but how about a few quarters for the machine you know about the machines there yeah how do you think i hack it down at school i thought maybe you stayed raunchy yeah things sure have changed can you watch these shirts for me right away oh boy you washy shirty for me quickie unless you knock off that pitch in english you wash your own shirts wise guy and besides if you want your shirts washed quickly you don't bring them through a chinese laundry you do them yourself the best way you can never i don't have any more shirts what am i going to do as your circumstances allow you the customary five days to have your shirts laundered properly we can proceed with this transaction honey when you finish breakfast would you go to the supermarket for me sure before it gets too crowded you can get in that in a hurry i want some meat right and some tomatoes and cucumber and some stuff for salad and some frozen peas and carrots yeah what kind of meat do you want uh about two and a half pounds of brisket of beef okay yeah and you better get some broccoli too okay here [Music] mr mueller mr mueller my wife sent me to get some firm ripe tomatoes for salad so so which are the framing ripe ones you got eyes you got hands so look and feel and maybe you'll find some tomatoes that will please your wife well you don't suppose you could help me do you i mean i don't want to have to bring them back if they're not firm and right if you'll allow me to finish discussing the merits of this chicken with this charming lady i'll be right with you and i'll help you with your tomatoes and the rest of your list you're not in a tremendous hurry i presume no no no no no rush mr muller just take your time take your time information three one one five five five information for what city please i'm calling for the number of camp overlook and it's pretty close to overlook falls ohio one moment please the number for camp overlook is 555-2368 would you make a note of that number for future use please yes i will thanks very much style telephone number three one one five five five two three six eight i will be arriving on the bus to get to 502 today it over the fall could you please have one of counselors there to pick me up fine harvey several of the boys are gonna be on that same bus and we'll have a counselor there to pick you up does your family know you call to confirm oh yeah they're sitting here right with me very good see you around five o'clock then take care of yourself thanks so much see you later oh would you consider it an intrusion on your very very busy schedule if i presume to ask what it was you just did i called campbell enough to confirm my arrival dad why oh listen no offense oh man no offense but that was kind of a long distance call wasn't it now don't you think either mom or myself should have placed the call and that is if a long-distance call was indeed absolutely necessary are you serious this is saturday morning right well it uh started out that way yes well out of state long-distance rates are very low during this time and if you dial direct over the falls you actually save money by getting the dial direct discount and by me calling them and having them meet me i saved the money i would have to spend on that beat up old cab from overlooked falls to the camp very simple really harvey how did you learn to dial all those numbers and to get long-distance information that way mom it's right here on the front of the ball it's like you told michael just read the directions and there's nothing to it well i gotta have some unpack my gear i'll see y'all later incidentally if you want to learn how to dial the rest it's right in the front of the book i know you told me nothing do it yes i know you really i it's from the front of the know i know [Applause] [Music] hey daddy daddy well you're out with a shopping list could you get this kind of home permanent for us sure wait a minute whoa young lady hold it sit down sit down home permanent for us sure i'm gonna give mom a permanent this afternoon what please set the you are going to give my wife a permanent this afternoon here in this house yes daddy you think my mom's very busy sending harvey off to camp and michael off to school and you've got a dinner dance tonight i can't spend all afternoon in the beauty parlor so i'm going to give her a permit oh well in addition my dear you are going to escort your mother to the dance tonight because i am not taking my wife to a dinner dance with the type of head you're going to leave her with this afternoon daddy i do it for mom all the time there's nothing to it really all you have to do is read the directions it's really very simple i know do you ever get the impression that the world is changing pretty quickly that if you sit still too long somebody will come through and paint you you know you live your life you work hard every day raise your family things kind of just go on but you know i've been thinking if time and money are important to you then you really have your choice of doing things a certain way that will save you time and stretch your dollars and if you have plenty of time and money you still for the most part have your choice i think it really all depends on you in my own kitchen this morning i suddenly realized how my own family has gotten with the real world without any of us really being aware of the fact that whether we're doing things in the least bit differently than we used to for instance my wife sends me to the supermarket to pick out things like meat and vegetables and salad greens do you realize what a mess i would have made out of things if we didn't have a supermarket let's take a look at that list that used to be an all-day shopping expedition for a home economics expert today it's nothing here's a perfect example why my wife says get a two and a half pound brisket fine i get her a two and a half pound brisket now it's going to be right here in this meat counter it's going to be packaged labeled and the price is going to be right on it chances are i'll come home exactly with what she wanted that goes for the frozen vegetables the salad greens the fruit cake mixes now you might call this what semi-automation modern efficiency call it whatever you like but it does keep the prices down and it saves an awful lot of time on the other hand if you'd like some conversation some leisurely shopping i guess you could go to a smaller grocery store tell the man exactly what you want so you do have a choice you know it all depends on you and what you want you know it's like that with a lot of things say do you know what just struck me a perfect example about the luxury of time or personal service and what a difference it makes in the cost of things would you roll up that window please this is something isn't it look at all this stuff in two minutes i'll be out of here and my car will be as clean as it's been in several weeks hey you remember how we used to get our cars washed we all had some favorite guy some gas station or some spot and we mosey over there every saturday afternoon make a social event out of getting our cars washed and we all thought that that guy was doing an extra special job for us we all really believed he was giving us some extra special service or attention and i'm sure it's all true but where are you gonna find fellas like that today and if you did find them where are you gonna find enough money to pay them well we've all got our little favorite indulgences you know i've got a guy down at the office well i don't think he makes more than i do i know he's busier than the dickens and yet his favorite indulgence in the world i guess is to go to the barber shop get himself an old-fashioned barber shave you know what i mean the hot towels the comfortable barber chair that leans back a half-dozed conversation about the baseball game and then the aftershave talc the massage the whole team remember when someone told you you had a long distance call you'd practically collapse because you were sure it was some disaster after all nobody would think of using long distance unless it was something of real importance today if you got to get something done the boy says pick up the phone call but for the most part long distance is really very very darn inexpensive especially if you know how to dial direct then the discount is even greater than it is at other times of course now when the operator's involved you know when when you're making a credit card call or if you're going to call collect or or if you're calling it a coin phone well then it costs more it looks like everything else if you want to hear the familiar voice of the operator and let her do the dialing for you then you're going to pay more for the services i guess it really all depends on you well there's no question about it it really all depends on you [Music] look it's like so many things in our everyday life you shoot up to the airport and it's nice and pleasant to hand your keys to the valet talk about the weather a little bit and just amble into the airport nice and leisurely on the other hand if you're like most people you pull into the airport or any parking lot grab the ticket out of the machine park and lock your own car and the chances are you save yourself some money and some time too you know i was at a sales meeting a couple of weeks ago we stayed at a very nice motel but we were having kind of a long conference in our room and we needed a little ice water because we had been talking so much wow if it costs that much of the beginning that's what it's going to cost all the way through hey uh jack is any more ice water in this picture over there no wait a minute i'll give you some more now jack will you please just sit down don't let me have that phone hello room service yeah 118. could you send us a bucket of ice and how about some nice fresh glasses too will you okay thanks and i'm hancock there thank you okay thanks joe joe would you mind if i gave you a little exercise in corporate frugality well if you're talking about that 250 000 that we included nothing that important joe if you would follow me about 14 steps well okay uh but how am i supposed to know the machine is here joe how did you know you needed 250 000 for sales expenses well you know it's a funny thing about some people i guess they kind of like the human element no matter what it is they're doing but i was thinking this morning when i was watching my kid die a long distance what if he had dialed wrong i'm sure he would have known enough to call the operator tell her that he made a mistake and he wouldn't be charged for the call but i think a lot of people envisioned some i don't know horrible catastrophe i guess if they die or wrong for instance just imagine if you're a kind of timid soul and you're dialing long distance direct to a town nearby okay um hello and martha do i sound like your aunt martha oh dear me is is this point 514-2817 you're a little closer to the mark that's the correct number but you're not aunt martha oh you're making progress please sir don't make jokes i dialed long distance may i ask from where you are calling as you pursue your search event martha i am calling from grand rapids michigan isn't this chicago i would say you have a little cause for consign sir this is not chicago this is birbank california welcome to beautiful downtown burbank welcome to beautiful downtown burbank okay so the four zone made a mistake look the telephone company encourages people to die a long distance direct that's why they give you discounts when you die a long distance yourself but they know that people are only human and that sometimes people make mistakes so what happens if you dial the wrong number when you're dialing long distance directly you simply dial the operator you tell you made a mistake and the call is credited and that's the end of it so i think that alert people people that are kind of with the real world as it exists today well i've learned that with a little common sense you can stretch your dollars a little farther and save yourself a lot of time and a lot of aggravation as my wife and daughter keep saying to me all you have to do is read the directions so we know enough that we place our long distance calls after five o'clock in the evening or all day saturday and sunday until five the telephone company makes the dial at yourself discounts even greater when you call it those times why not do it just think of the money and the ingenuity and the human energy that have gone into creating some of these things that are designed to simplify things and make life a little bit more efficient these days hey i could use a cup of coffee how about you i'll go in and get us hey what happened sudden shower you'll be clear sir you ever stop to think you dial a number in your own home and somehow automatically you can reach anywhere in north america and even many parts of the world what a world we live in dial it yourself long-distance discounts for anybody who has the common sense to look in front of the phone book find out how it's done it all depends on [Music] you well thanks everybody for tuning in for this impromptu the power or internet is out screening and hopefully i'll see you again soon live in person everybody take care you
