[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] ah [Music] so now [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so uh [Music] good [Music] [Music] [Music] hmm [Music] so so wow [Music] [Music] oh [Music] so me [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] wow so so all right that's getting a little crazy [Music] i mean we all know where baking comes from um so it is uh rare that i have a film that actually shows the slaughtering of livestock and i was concerned i i've seen this film before but i couldn't remember that's funny michael bacon did it i couldn't remember if it what it actually showed i'm confusing this with another film which actually features a little kid and it's more um fun uh but uh thanks new hampshire network uh for that um yeah sorry i i uh i cut out the uh sounds of uh pigs being slaughtered or pigs in distress i don't know if they were actually being slaughtered uh the soundtrack but uh yeah like i said it's it's rare that we actually watch see films that show the actual uh slaughtering of animals in the uh kill floor or whatever it's called um we see just before we see just after uh you know sides of pork and beef and things like that this reminds me of a uh of a home movie day though uh where we show old home movies people bring home movies and then we watch them and this one woman brought her father's home movies and it was this beautiful footage of christmas like mid-60s kids opening gifts beautiful kodachrome footage of the christmas tree and his happiness and all this for about uh three minutes and the last 30 seconds was in a uh pig slaughterhouse and it was these pigs being killed and then like rolling down a conveyor belt and being cut open and all this stuff and uh i was like oh my god what's going on and the deal was that the father who shot this had some footage left over and he thought it would be funny to go to where he works and show uh the pigs being slaughtered uh funny for his family and so it was uh yes it was notorious for our home movie day somebody else actually mentioned it um to me a couple years ago i don't know like a couple of months ago they said yeah i remember watching this one film this pig uh being slaughtered after uh christmas up so yes sorry about that um i grew up kind of on a farm so i saw animals being slaughtered and ate them so i have a sense of where they uh where my meat comes from and the impact of it all right so this next film is uh school spirit and sportsmanship and teaches us the importance of both [Music] this is the story of a game but its climax comes not on the playing floor but in the niles dressing room just before the game it comes as two members of the team reach a decision a decision which will reflect on the whole school to understand this we need to go back about a week when signs like this were appearing all over the town of niles the game with maine was the big game and excitement was running high then one evening with a few signs left over some of the fellows had an idea [Music] they also had a tank full of gas [Music] so they made the trip to the town of maine and draped their banner right over the entrance of the rival high school [Music] [Applause] well some of the fellows at maine figured they couldn't swallow an insult like that so they paid a return visit to the town of niles [Music] [Applause] by the morning of the game you would have thought the very honor of niles high was at stake everyone was in high spirits until they discovered that somebody from maine had paid them one more visit look at that that'll never come off we can let them get away with this kid i'm gonna who do those guys from maine think they are they can't get away with that stuff no they've done it well tonight they come here to play sure and will they rub it in not if we can get even with them how i don't know yet hey joe wait i've got it their locker room we can get what we need from the chemistry lab they'll come out running and the laugh will be on them it'll work joe i know it will listen yes one thing led to another all in the name of school spirit and then but wait is this school spirit is it good school spirit does it bring credit to the school during lunch period roger went ahead with his plan to get even by preparing a special welcome for the visiting team of course roger and joe were only part of the school the others were getting ready too but in a different way [Applause] [Music] five that was real good kid now let's have a cheer for the opposing team maybe [Applause] yes all right it's going to be a good game tonight but i want you to think for a moment now we just gave a cheer for our opponents why did we do that well i think we really mean it when we say main high fight fight we want our opponents to do their best don't we we want a good game and we'll be out there tonight cheering them on as well as our own team because we want a good game we have fine spirit in our school and i'm proud of oh a few times this week we've almost lost our perspective but i think we've done fairly well because the game is the important thing not just winning not getting even but having a good game is important now a good game is possible only through good sportsmanship and good sportsmanship comes only from the right kind of school spirit so come out and support your team but remember we're going to have a lot of guests tonight so behave like good hosts so we're sure to have a good day that's all hey roger where is it you got it didn't you uh well no why not well let's forget about it joe we we've got a game to play tonight and let the magus look like fools all right forget it i'll get it myself no joe wait well what about it is a good game really the most important thing is a good game more important than getting even is it more important than winning yes the climax of the story comes before the game it comes when two members of the team make a decision a decision as to how they will represent their school i found out who painted the sidewalk last night jack humphrey their first string guard yeah and am i going to get him even if i get kicked out of the game oh joe you can't do that uh what's it to you all right fellas let's talk it over now i'm making a change in the starting lineup marv you're going in a garden place of joe now i want all of you to hear what i have to say i want a team out there tonight i can be proud and by this time all of you ought to know what kind of a team that is now we've won a lot of games together and i've been proud of you we've lost some games and i've been proud of you too why because you've played your best because you've represented your school well because in your individual play and in your team play you've shown you know what playing a good game means you've shown that you can combine sport and sportsmanship now i'm a little worried tonight for the first time because i sense that some of you may have forgotten i hope i'm wrong before the game is over tonight i think i'll know all right on the floor now play it clean do your best that's all i ask hey raj wait a minute [Applause] five eight one five three now think about your school is the spirit in your school the kind that makes for good sportsmanship [Music] hey um so that blt film had me so flustered i forgot to introduce myself i'm skip alzheimer i collect old 60 millimeter films and show them to folks like you and this is the av geese lunchtime streaming show um where we don't normally show footage of pigs being slaughtered [Music] but we do show footage of high school teams being slaughtered and moral dilemmas that teenagers face every day uh so i was gonna there were some questions about how i'm showing these films and uh so i'm just gonna slide this over some of you have already seen this but right here is telecini and so you see up here is the film kind of threads through here this is the sound head um let's see if i can block this off a little bit so the sound head is right here and normally the sound head is actually on a projector is actually after uh and so this actually has a built-in audio delay that captures the audio first and then syncs it internally this is a german machine it's made by mwa nova and uh they basically this is based on what it's called i think a sound follower or a sound machine so basically this was designed just to play back sound 16 and 35 millimeter mag sound or optical sound uh then you would have this synced to a telecenter scanner um but they modified it and added a camera here so what happens is you have it threaded through you have a camera you have a uh camera is facing um the uh a mirror which is facing the the actual frame and then you have a little sprocketed wheel that every time there's a perf or sprocket hole it um flickers makes it like a flash that's why it's called the flash transfer and it captures a video image then that's going into a box which is converting it to uh something that i can stream over the internet so when i do these shows i'm either showing it live via film or via a file that i've already captured over the last five years uh 10 years actually probably um and i do that kind of to mix things up to make it to where i can show more stuff uh in a short period of time instead of like showing the film rewinding it threading film showing the film everyone is that's why i used to do it but i realized that i could kind of balance go back and forth um with the two and hopefully make it a more pleasurable experience for you um this next film is called we are one and the thing is um a lot of the so the films that i've digitized and i'm showing you files of i've seen almost all of those these that i'm showing live i haven't seen or haven't seen in a while so i'm always kind of like i don't know what this is so i'm always kind of standing by if i feel like it's getting a little depressing or you know whatever so we're kind of world premiering this um and so there might be something really depressing it might be something shocking and i'll i'll try to manage that if i can um but this is part of the experience of av geeks as you're like i don't know what this is let's see so this is we are one so i don't really know what this is i know it's from the 70s that's about it all right here we go [Music] [Applause] [Music] jackie bob slade is here to see you okay have him come in please hello i'm jackie paige bob slate it's nice to meet you [Music] how'd you like that darling great hey mister would you throw us a frisbee [Music] so [Music] look guys i'd really appreciate some input from you about this film we're doing now we're planning to talk about awkward situations between handicapped people and non-handicapped people i'm not sure what else well how about sex politics and religion that should keep it from being dull not completely dull anyway now fellas diane how can we help you well i guess for you just to talk to me about situations you've been in good and bad and what seemed to be the right thing to do that's a tall order because there's no easy answers but what i'd really like to see is for all people to regard the individual first and see the handicap second i don't quite get you how can anybody not see a disability i mean it's a fact right no argument there but some people generalize and group all people with specific disabilities together as an example i get asked more times than you might believe what do you say to a blind person of course there's no answer to that that's a good point and uh while we're talking about this i've got another question when i meet someone with a handicap i'm always unsure about whether to mention the handicap or not or whether i should ask what happened or what's wrong as a matter of fact i know the subject of my blindness is going to be on the mind of somebody i've met for the first time so if i feel they have a sense of humor or can handle it i'll bring it up in a light joke like i'll say something like you may have noticed that i've lost my sight and if you find it would you let me know people should follow their own instincts ask if you want but be prepared for the answer some people may smile and give you the answer others may tell you to go to hell i guess you're saying that people should talk to handicapped people just like they do other people right well that may seem obvious to you but it's hard sometimes for people like me and it's hard to know what to do you don't want to be insensitive but you don't want to interfere it can be frustrating for handicapped persons too not knowing what to do i remember when i was traveling once i was in an airport and i was having difficulty carrying my luggage i was stumbling tripping and really having a difficult time and people just stared i wouldn't have minded it had they offered to help as well as staring but they just dared i was angry i was really really mad well maybe they were being rude but it could be they thought you could handle it and tom just one question why didn't you ask somebody to help you with your bag let me think about that i think i wanted them to sense that i needed assistance without my asking i really hated to ask for asking was admitting that i could not handle it alone so you were ambivalent about it tom non-handicapped people can't read minds who said handicapped persons could read minds i think we have a real point about communication here but there's a real difference between you and jack and i i am so physically limited that early i had to learn to ask people to assist me but i'm still in control of myself and that i ask for assistance i am able to tell them exactly what to do and how to do it in fact i feel that i have a responsibility as a handicapped person now jackie you don't have to have a responsibility as a handicapped person how about just relaxing and being yourself but jack being handicapped is part of myself we may not be able to agree on our responsibility to others but i for one feel very strongly that i have a responsibility to others i don't understand that diane many times people are very uncomfortable around someone as severely handicapped as myself so i must try to help them feel at ease and relax if they're helping me perhaps for the first time up and down steps or lifting i must be very sure they know exactly what to do or we both could be in a whole lot of trouble for example i'll say um pick me up like a sack of potatoes you know and then i'll go into now some people can put their arms around your neck but i can't what you do is you put one arm around my shoulders one under my knees and just lift how do people respond most people relax when they find out i know exactly what to tell them to do i try to be warm and casual and if it doesn't work out then i ask somebody else i think what's operating is that most people are fearful fearful of the unknown when they're around someone who is handicapped and it makes them uneasy well i think i know one reason why people are afraid when they meet someone with a physical handicap we realize that our bodies can be damaged if it can happen to you it could happen to me and that's scary that's very perceptive of you diane many people won't admit that physically handicapped people make them uncomfortable for that reason but many other people don't have that problem at least not with me in fact some non-handicapped people even correct others i remember when i was out eating with a friend one time the waiter came off to take our order the waiter must have realized that i was blind but he made an assumption that was wrong based on the fact of my blindness he said to my friend what would he like to eat my friend said why don't you ask him how did the waiter react just fine after all it was just a simple error on his part he didn't mean to be rude we all make mistakes like that sometimes then there are helpful hands they come rushing in and help you when you don't really need help i remember when i was studying in college people would be walking by and they'd see me with a stick in my mouth and perhaps i'd be about ready to turn a page or not and they'd without asking would come and turn several pages and i thank them and after they left i'd usually go back to where i was jackie you protected that person's feelings and that was a lovely thing to do but that's like when a non-handicapped person tries to spare the handicapped person something i hadn't thought of that i guess i should have just told her no i can turn the page myself each of us is different just as everyone else is different some of us like to do as much as we can even if people ask to help me i prefer to do things independently even if it takes me longer or i have to try harder people ought to ask if they can help handicapped persons but they ought to expect an answer of no and not take it personally i've noticed diane that some people out of their nervousness with handicapped persons try to compensate by overreacting haven't you noticed that jackie oh yes i call these your gushy gerties they come rushing over and say such sickening sweet things is you're such an inspiration at school they would come up to me and say oh i bet you make straight a's and i'd reply no i make a c now and then i'm not an angel i don't want a halo i'm not a child i'm just me i'm with you on that jackie i can wait till heaven for a halo for sure well i don't know about you but i met some people who would just assume pretend i'm not there those are the avoiders they ignore you even when you're in the same place i find them the most difficult to deal with one advantage of the gushy gerties and the helpful hannahs they at least talk to you i've even turned a few of those into friends i'm glad to hear that jackie how did you do it just by talking with them like anyone else i'd rather be with these and socialize with these than be with folks who see me as a patient or a client that's the bottom line isn't it jackie making friends being comfortable being real with each other but one thing about what you said i think we all need to be careful about categorizing people although i know exactly what kind of behavior you describe it seems so simple and it really is but we're all individuals and we all have likes and dislikes about the way that things should be done there's a well-known philosophic statement that says the same thing there's diversity even in unity yeah after all all of us here and other people handicapped or not we are one in some basic spiritual way we're not so different from each other that may all be true but i have a question how many realize that we still have a long way to go a long way sorry i can't shake hands won't you sit down please i'm the one who should be sorry i didn't realize hi my name's tom i walk like this because i've got cerebral palsy if you think i work funny you ought to see me run [Music] here dad oh i'm sorry is your daddy blind yes he is but he can do anything well almost anything [Music] so [Music] [Music] so uh yeah it's fascinating um basically uh i have a couple of films i've shown um what do you say to a blind person um i can't remember another title but they were all basically like um how what do you do when you encounter a handicapped person and it's you know it kind of deals with the awkwardness and all that stuff and so this is pretty great so i do have another film that i'm not going to show you um called don't tell the cripples about sex which is very similar format and i almost feel like it's the same people but i really need to do some research but it's it's the same type of thing it's uh has this super provocative title and it's just like a support group or an encounter group where they're sitting and talking about different situations that come up so it actually is fairly boring um but man that title is just nuts now i do have other films called sex another film called sex in the handicapped which is a swedish film which basically is pretty explicit and another film called choices which is also yeah we're not watching that here even if we have like a private adults only thing i probably will not show that to you um choices is is for people that have spinal cord injuries and it is and i didn't intend to these kind of showed up in collections that i got so it's not like i have a thing for for um people with handicaps and uh their sexuality it just happens that i acquired uh human sexuality classes uh films um of which those were part of them so i'm not a perv i swear um i'm a perv about other things but not that um krampus big fan of krampus uh that is the christmas uh devil that accompanies saint nicholas and um punishes children all right um speaking of punishing children this next film is uncle smiley and the junkyard playground so if you know the song sing along is the one when the school day is done that's the kids always run to its office is the place where the kids always working to get up and go but uncle's a friend who can never say no smiley get up and go look out here [Music] no matter what happens is [Music] hey what are you all doing there waiting in front of that fence we're waiting for uncle smiley to bring the key this is the day when me and uncle smiley started to build the junkyard playground what's a junkyard playground well it's a special kind of playground that you hey what do you mean you and uncle smiley well when all of us and uncle smiley felt the junkyard playground hey there's uncle smiling coming now with the key but what's a junkyard playground well i told you it's a special kind you know it's a shame that vacant lots like that just lie around with nobody ever using them except to throw trash and garbage in but what is the junkyard playground golly we've already told you a hundred times if you don't understand by now then you just better watch us and uncle smiley and find out yeah actions speak louder than words wet words oh wow you're too poor much junkyard lonely junkyard nobody wants you anymore forgotten junkyard you're just a dump yard the world has closed its door abandoned backyard deserted shack yard you've every reason to cry poor little dump yard you've really tried hard but everyone has passed you by why don't you come along with us and bring a hammer and a nail a shovel and a paintbrush and an extra garbage pail you can create magic with the things that can be found lying on a junkyard ground poor old junkyard [Music] we're gonna turn you around we're gonna change you and rearrange you and turn you upside down we're gonna try hard to make a new yard and build a place we can play back block junkyard dirty dump yard make a little room for me why don't you come along with us and bring a hammer and a nail a shovel and a paintbrush and an extra garbage pail you can create magic with the things that can be found lying on a junkyard ground what are you all and uncle smiley doing here we're building a spin thing what's a spin thing well you spin around on it do you know where we got all the things we're using sure we just found them lying around the lot except the tools uncle brought those except the rope too cuz me and uncle smiley went to a big ship line and they just gave it to us with nothing sure you can get a lot of things like that for nothing you've just gotta ask [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] is this the junkyard playground yet not yet we've just started building it takes a while to make things you know this is going to be a car what kind of car a car car silly what other kind is there well there are lots of kinds of cars real ones and toy ones yellow ones and there's racing cars and old cars this is a racing car and we made it out of old pipes and boards and stuff just lying around the lot except the cable sports uncle smiley and i went to the power company and they had lots of them lying around so they gave us some for nothing you know what's so good about making toys with junkyard stuff is that you can always take them apart after you get tired of them and make something new again and grownups won't get mad at you for taking things apart you know paint is such great stuff you can change the looks of anything with paint it's weird stuff too i'll bet that wall hadn't been painted in a hundred years and we made it look like new by the time we were finished with it where did you get the paint oh just lying around the ground no i'm kidding but it was almost the same thing though because uncle smiley went to a big paint company and they gave us most of the paint we wanted for almost nothing yeah because it was all funny colors and cards that people don't buy much of i like funny colors me too boy is paint weird [Music] so what's the uncle smiles making now can't you tell that's a swing thing is that like a spin thing no you swing on a swing thing and spin on a spin thing [Music] wow where'd you get all those metal barrels we got them from a big oil company they had lots and they're all over the place uncle smiley told them we were gonna build a big junkyard playground and they just gave them to us but what is a junkyard playground i keep telling you you're looking at one right now you mean all those bells and things well yeah but they're only part of a junkyard playground it's the idea that counts mean like taking all sorts of junk and things you can get for free and making playthings out of them yeah and the idea that you can take them apart and build something else whenever you feel like it i think i'm beginning to get the idea [Music] nobody can buy you things that are brand new at any big department store but it can't buy you the satisfaction of doing so much more those throw away things and broken play things are all reusable you see yeah all that old trash is worth more than new cash so junkyard some room for me why don't you come along with us and bring a hammer and a nail a shovel and a paintbrush and an extra garbage pail you can create magic [Music] uncle smiley thought we ought to make a garden too with a real tree in it a lot of us never planted anything before or even seen anything planted except in the movies it wasn't that hard though did you get those flowers for nothing too no we had to buy them all but it was worth it do you know how important trees and plants are i bet you think i don't know but i do trees and plants help make the air that everybody in the world breeds and lots of things like that hey you're right how'd you know about that i know about a lot of things [Music] you're not lonely anymore we've really changed you and rearranged you and now you're so much more [Music] they never noticed you before but you were right there they know what else can so junkyard why don't you come along with us and bring a hammer and a nail a shovel and a paintbrush and an extra garbage pail you can create magic with the things that can be found lying on a jump yard [Music] oh uncle smiley um so uh i've shown how many uncle smiley films have i shown i was looking that up i i think i have two more to go because i have a collection of them i don't know if i have all of them either i feel like there's a maybe one or two that i'm missing let me see so i have uh i'm sure this is captivating to watch me look at a list of file names um i have six of which we have shown three that's it i'm sure we've shown more than that i'll have to go through but um i'm running out i need to see if i have more um that i just have not been transferred that i've gotten since i did this compilation dvd of uncle smiley films and man crazy songs every single time every single time jim burrows uh he made other educational films and he also had crazy songs in them as well um i don't know if he's with us any longer he was my friend on facebook at one point we had exchanged some pleasantries but i never really got in there and asked him about writing uncle smiley films etc um so uh this is interesting i was going to show this film but i realized it's what we call an iconographic film meaning that it's it's just panning across a page of artwork and it's not very good but i did want to show you this um so what you don't see sometimes is the countdown and the countdown is where they they hide information or they put things in there for the projectionist they put things there for the labs that process the films and so i've slowed this down and we're playing this live um so this is a countdown and see if you can notice something in here that struck me all right i'm going to rewind it i'm going to try to rewind it let's see what happens um so there's one of the leader ladies or china girls then there's that oh my gosh a mannequin head a male mannequin head at that um i've seen that a couple of times uh and i've seen it with women mannequin heads i've also seen it with baby doll heads uh like little girls um it's creepy though ah so um yeah that's the the types of things that sometimes we see and whenever i run across it i'll certainly try to show you because um i think it's fascinating to see all that stuff um but thanks guys for tuning in today um it's a wonderful day outside so i'm gonna probably go outside at some point um but uh thanks for commenting i saw a lot of new faces there uh an opportunity uh to get the word out to other people is great i love it i love new eyeballs um and we do this every weekday uh from 1pm to two-ish uh you know somewhere in there we're kind of loosey-goosey about the time um and have been doing it this was our 206th show 207th show 206th show we've been doing this every day every weekday since mid-march there's lots of episodes uh that from the past that you can see on youtube or facebook uh or on avgeeks.com um so disorienting so just wondering avgeeks.com if you like what you saw you can buy some coffee uh we love coffee caffeine is our drug of choice um also you can subscribe like um follow whatever you know everybody has a different name for it um but we appreciate you showing uh showing up and commenting and um we'll be back again tomorrow one o'clock so everybody have a good rest of the day as we always seem to do we look inside the film can for advice sometimes and it tells us to please rewind and to love each other and those seem like pretty good things to do today so everybody uh if you haven't voted yet please vote please do it i'm not gonna tell you who to vote for um but you can guess who i would probably vote for um me being a socialist marxist liberal commie bastard alright everybody have a good rest of the day and i will see you four tomorrow eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three
