[Music] [Music] this looks like a normal medical scene but it isn't it's atomic energy at work as a blessing and this looks like what it is devastation due to an atomic blast must atomic energy lead only to destruction like this or can it be used as it is here a blessing to mankind here is fred mcmurray with an answer to that question hello everybody i'm fred mcmurray you have just seen some pictures showing the devastating destruction of atomic energy and also some pictures showing that atomic energy can be a force for good and these are just a few of the wonderful and until recently secret motion picture scenes which we are going to show you i think i'm an average american citizen uh like most of you and when i hear the word adam i immediately think of the word bomb which shows you how very little i know about atomic energy but i've been asked to come here by father keller the founder of the chris movement and to help him in presenting this film and so here i am and now father james keller thank you very much fred for being with us father uh tell me how did you ever happen to get interested in atomic energy well there's a great story behind that it's an instance of what one person can do one day a man in the atomic energy field dropped in here at our office and said that he'd heard we were going to make 30 pictures 30 christopher pictures to get people of quality into the fields that count you're just to make one on atomic energy and i looked at him i i wondered how we could ever do that and he didn't pay any attention to my protesting he said well if you do if you can show that this power is from god and it can be used for research in the medicine and agriculture industry and countless other ways it may have a great effect in benefiting mankind for the future and you said if you don't or some movement like yours doesn't most of us may be blasted off the face of the earth well he couldn't put it any stronger could he it bite me at first but then uh uh i got over the shock quickly and then i saw the tremendous challenge even if you could have the smallest most insignificant part in changing this power from destructive to a constructive force and use it as god intended as a benefit man for mankind that would be a thrill so uh we started right away to get into it and i've been more of fiddling around ever since trying to get scripts everything else and i think we've just about hit it so we plan i know uh only to do one film we'd like to do about two or three films on atomic energy well i think now we ought to get into the picture bring it to the friends fred this is hal gibney i will act as your guide as we look at these atomic energy pictures which fred mcmurray and father keller just spoke to you about you are now looking at scientists at work at a most vital function in atomic energy the production of what is known as radioactive materials it looks big and confusing and kind of complicated doesn't it well for the average person not steeped in scientific knowledge it is complicated but we don't intend in these pictures to try to explain the miracle of atomic energy we hope to show only how this god-given force can be used as a blessing for example let us look in on a famous cancer research hospital and get a close look at atomic energy working as a benefit for mankind this girl is suffering from one of mankind's most dreaded diseases cancer she has cancer of the thyroid gland a few years ago this would have meant her case was hopeless unless radical surgery was used this glass looks like it has plain water in it but actually it contains hope hope in the form of a radioactive iodine solution most people know that iodine is used in treating thyroid but let's explain where this radioactive business comes in by splitting the atoms of iodine you get the radioactive iodine solution the girl is drinking here we see the young lady on the examination table suppose instead of the radioactive solution she had swallowed a tiny wristwatch if you could listen closely enough you could hear it ticking in her throat the little bit of atomic energy in that solution starts sending out signals from her throat in somewhat the same way as the ticking of the watch the operator suspended above her neck is picking up the so-called ticking so the radioactive solution produced by atomic study is helping the doctor in his efforts to help the girl you can imagine how thrilled she is to know that there is one more ray of hope for her let us look at the many places in america where for many years thousands have worked in the field of atomic energy here's the main headquarters of the atomic energy commission in washington dc branching out from the central headquarters is a vast network of projects this is the brookhaven national laboratory in upton new york where one of our greatest atomic furnaces is located at the hanford works in the state of washington a tremendous program in health physics is underway and this is the plant industry station at beltsville maryland they're using atomic energy to learn more about growth and nutrition of plants in schenectady new york at the knolls atomic power laboratory scientists are studying how atomic energy can be used for power here is oak ridge laboratory where the radioactive iodine came from that brought the smile of hope to our girl in the first scenes at the university of california in los angeles there is an important project in the deserts of new mexico at los alamos there is another and at new brunswick new jersey still another in idaho there is an important atomic energy testing station finally there is the argonne national laboratory in chicago while we are here let us go inside and see a remarkable example of the ingenuity which man has utilized in dealing with the potentially dangerous forces of atomic energy here is a testing room where various metals and materials are subjected to intense radiation this room is shielded by concrete walls three feet thick just think of it a force you can't see or feel and yet it is so powerful it has to be shielded by three-foot walls in order to handle the materials in this dangerous place the argon workers have invented a fantastically wonderful pair of artificial hands operated by remote control these robot hands are designed to imitate the seven human motions employed in grasping lifting moving and turning objects here is a man who has practically four hands isn't that something you'll note that he has his fingers inserted into metal finger tubes every motion that he makes with his fingers and hands is exactly duplicated through remote control by the mechanical hands inside the testing room he's watching his other pair of hands through a window built of laminated layers of glass to a thickness of three feet you are now looking through this three foot thick window at the mechanical hands and here is what he is pulling out in each of these containers is a small portion of some element that has just been made radioactive these are the tracers used in various experiments both in science and in industry all over the united states in laboratories and greenhouses in the open fields thousands of workers are learning more about how plants grow how they use the materials in the soil from what they find out in experiments such as you see here they'll be able to put fertilizers to better use and so get better crops certainly here is a blessing to mankind in this field of corn they are studying the effect of radiation they are learning more and more about corn here is a scientist who for all intents and purposes is a farmer he is taking the pollen from one ear of corn and pouring it into another year of the same plant this is a plant that has received radiations of atomic energy this experiment will help to show the effect of radiation on future generations of corn all these experiments are constructive uses of this dangerous force of course all the efforts in agriculture are not confined to working with plants alone for example here in this laboratory under the blazing rays of an artificial sun they are trying to solve the greatest mystery connected with plants how does the green coloring matter of a plant enable it to use carbon dioxide water and sunlight to produce oxygen and plant tissue how does it use the energy of sunlight as a part of its process of growth and produce the food we eat suppose they find out they may be able to grow bigger and better food plants they may even be able to create food elements in the laboratory without the plants more food for a starving world a blessing indeed friends that's just part of the film that you're going to see on this wonderful subject of atomic energy the hopeful side of atomic energy but i think you've noticed as it impressed me and i think it's probably uh impressed you the same way that people did this a handful of people have discovered uncovered for all of us the positive constructive side of atomic energy as i was telling mr mcmurray a little while ago that in each instance is emphasis on what one person can do didn't that impress you too fred it certainly did father i'll say father uh in your book uh there was a good example of what one person can do i mean the story about the uh school teacher up in deming washington dorothy massey was anyone that was right why don't you tell me honest about that i'd be delighted uh this story that uh fred mentions is a splendid example of what one person can do far removed from the atomic energy field this teacher dorothy massey she's 58 years old she teaches science in the consolidated high school and she's not simply taking care of herself or a little area she wants to make the world better for being in it besides tackling atomic energy she does many other things she works from morning till night during this summer she's doing all sorts of things over the weekend she's teaching at the baptist sunday school and she just can't do enough to to help others well in her class in science she tried to get over to the teenagers that they too could play a part in making atomic energy a god-given help to mankind she emphasized what they could do what can be done by through research and medicine agriculture industry in all these various fields and she thought that maybe some of them would pick up this idea and go into this important sphere of influence well what happened several of her graduates have uh gone into the field of atomic energy and one of them uh won a prize the national prize for science for all america teenager and they told me when i was the atomic energy commission in washington that this young lad may be one of the great scientists of america in the future why because not only does he have a disposition towards science but above that he has a spiritual sense it's going to restrain it and use it for the advantage of mankind dorothy massey has given a heartening example to all of us it's one more instance of what one person can do wouldn't it be a great thing father if there were just one dorothy massey in each town and city in the country why the whole future peacetime development of atomic energy would be assured that's right and i think it'll be pointed out to you folks in the rest of the films that you're about to see now let us look at some more of the atomic energy films here we are at the famous oak ridge atomic energy project what are the technicians doing here well it's a long complicated and highly technical story i do want to point out however that one of these technicians could well be that student described by father keller in his story about the wonderful school teacher from the state of washington as for what is going on in this scene well they're cooking up more of those atomic substances which are called radioactive materials the radioactive substance you see being made right now may be the same substance which is being utilized in this next medical scene it doesn't seem very interesting but believe it or not you are seeing a bunch of atoms drawing their own picture every tick of a radioactive atom causes the pin in the instrument to jiggle as it passes over the chart this is an important function let's see it in action this gentleman may have cancer of the thyroid gland he's drinking the same kind of iodine solution that the young lady drank and just as it did in her case the iodine goes to the thyroid gland and concentrates in the cancer tissue but this time they put this instrument to work this is atomic energy as god intended it to be used the instrument is rigged up so that as the machine moves back and forth above his thyroid gland the pin moves across the chart the signals sent out by the radioactive iodine are run through another instrument and made strong enough to wiggle the pen and there you are a picture of the patient's thyroid gland showing exactly where the iodine is concentrated the change in pattern tells the doctor whether or not the patient has cancer and where it is then treatment can start some of the treatment may not be by atomic energy but atomic energy is a means of diagnosis of finding out the truth and perhaps at the same time stopping the spread of cancer now let us look at another field where atomic energy is at work as a blessing farm animals you are watching an atomic energy experiment in nutrition for example the hen you see here is being fed a special breakfast i would say about eleven dollars of radioactive carbon and phosphorus what's it all about well the radioactive atoms in the carbon and phosphorus can be easily traced and in that way we see how a hen makes use of them in building an egg from the findings of the scientists better egg production in the future can be assured here we see atomic scientists who might even be called cowboys they have just given the husky steer in the picture an injection of radioactive iodine this is research to give us better and healthier beef animals here's another experiment with farm animals with sheep the sheep are eating cubes of food containing radioactive elements of various kinds it doesn't harm the sheep but it gives us a means of finding out how to build better lamb chops and mutton for the future now let us look at another scene of atomic energy at work as a possible lifesaver this time we are going to look at a radioactive substance called gallium even though the gallium substance you see being handled is going to be put into a patient's body the laboratory worker must be extremely careful in his handling of it after all he handles the stuff day in and day out and he must be careful not to come into too close contact with it that is why it is shielded by thick bricks and why he handles it at the end of a piece of twine when this man was brought to the cancer research hospital his case was extremely serious he had a cancer of the chest it was spreading in spite of all ordinary treatment his condition finally came to the attention of one of the 22 southern medical schools that cooperate with the atomic energy commission's oak ridge institute of nuclear studies in operating this hospital he readily agreed to being given an experimental shot of radioactive gallium the doctors want to know if the powerful rays from this element being dripped into the man's blood will help this type of cancer there it goes drip drip drip every drop is a soldier in a new kind of army an army that is fighting with god against the forces of disease this man needs all the help he can get from those little particles of radioactive gallium week after week this battle went on now let us see the result you might think the patient is worse because he's on the operating table actually this is another step in his fight against cancer the fight in which he now has no lie in atomic energy thanks to the signals the gallium sends out the doctors have been able to pinpoint the cancer this man has leukemia his body is not manufacturing enough red blood cells up until lately this disease has been almost always fatal but now thanks to atomic energy it can be detected a lot earlier the earlier they start treating it the more hope of a cure experiments such as these may eventually give more hope for a reprieve from a death sentence thanks to atomic energy in these films we have concentrated to a large extent on atomic energy as a blessing in the field of medicine but let us emphasize again that atomic energy is already serving mankind in many ways for example already atomic energy is being used to measure engine wear under different lubrication conditions and thus to develop new engine oils to study how corrosion occurs for example in telephone poles and thus to develop ways of preventing it to study the process by which gasoline may be produced synthetically from coal and oil and thus to find ways of improving it to propel ships at sea with plants powered by atomic energy to study tire wear and thus to develop better tires and to study nutritional deficiencies in humans and animals and find ways to correct them yes this is atomic energy at work not as a force for evil but as a force for good at work as god intended it to be and in this field so many many more people people of good will and high character are needed to supplement the present great army of workers men and women of all professions and trades are needed to name a few plant guards and security police radiologists both men and women statisticians to handle scientific data both men and women with executive ability file clerks like this young lady plant engineers construction workers for new projects nuclear scientists of many fields biochemists are needed too and meteorologists to get atmospheric data yes as you have seen by these pictures atomic energy can be a blessing friends the film you've just seen shows very clearly the tremendous power for good that atomic energy can bring to humanity if it's used in a constructive way god has put this enormous power in our hands meant it to be used as our servant not as our master just think of all the things that could be done if we would only use atomic energy as a blessing of god for research into medicine for uses in agriculture for countless ways of developing industry light heat oh things that are almost beyond our imagination but that remains for you to decide for you uh to to make up your mind you to use your influence to see that this extraordinary power is used for the benefit of mankind not for his destruction you have you see now coming up over the world various uses of reactors just think of what this will mean not only for our country but for nations that are uh completely undeveloped as present let it be used in the ways of god rather than the ways of the devil and now uh just to remind you what it can be we're going to bring to you a section of film from another movie made by the christopher's on the power of atomic energy and in this film you will see uh its destructive force let it be a reminder to you and now we shall see this segment of film [Music] [Applause] [Music] she doctors would come up with some miraculous cure but oh she'll love your van she'll be happy there i've got to face it dad that's all we can do for him now you'll have to wait here a while you better park right over there those are your instructions what's going on you got yourself a front seat to something you're not going to forget so quick see that hill you'll see it light up like you never saw light before any minute now they're gonna test an atomic bomb dad let's turn back wouldn't get very far ought to go off any minute now but what about vivian she'll be terrified be just like fireworks for her she doesn't know what it means we'll be the ones who'll be frightened [Music] hmm [Music] [Music] [Music] now for our christopher thought for the week i think this text is particularly appropriate it's from saint paul to the hebrews here's words for we have not hear a lasting city but we seek one that is to come well that's rather appropriate now in atomic age we have not hear a lasting city but even before atomic energy before atomic bombs and hydrogen bombs came along we're only here for a while but at least god wanted us to have a little foretaste of heaven on earth he meant us to have peace he managed to use all the powers of the earth for our benefit not for our destruction try to make atomic energy a force for good now in the christopher's as we mentioned many times before we have no organization no memberships no meetings no dues we pass along little suggestions indications of what others have done in our monthly news notes that we send to a million people at the present time and we will be glad to send them to you all you need to send the postcard to the christopher's new york 17 new york we will be glad to send them to you without any cost whatever keep in mind as we try to emphasize over and over again the path that you can play in changing this world this this is your world and god wants you to reach out to the world reach out to everybody all of humanity is nothing more than you over and over again show that this 20th century in which we're privileged to live can do something that's going to help man we've we've achieved many things in a physical mechanical way but let us not forget that is remain for our day to bring to humanity universal death and destruction if we mishandle atomic and hydrogen energy do your part to show that this can be a servant of man used for its benefit and then when once you are reaching out to the fields you must do more than simply take an attitude of wishful thinking you must do something take an interest in your government take an interest in your schools in your radio and your television all your means of communication uh better literature better everything that's going to fill them with good ideas instead of reducing them to the the status of a brood and there'll be less and less of brutality the more we bring into our hearts the peace and love that god wants to have don't forget the part that you can play no matter who you are or what you are no matter what your circumstances may be there is a part that you personally can play in changing the whole world for the better do your av geeks lunchtime streaming show i started early uh because i wanted to show atomic energy uh can be a blessing um and not take up too much of the normal hour that we've dedicated to uh watching old 16 millimeter films uh it's a fascinating film uh in my mind uh we showed another uh christopher's film uh you can change the world which featured a bunch of celebrities uh all vowing to help uh engage in local uh positions of political positions as far as um uh you know school boards and um community boards and things like that to make sure that it doesn't get taken over by communists and this one is a way to kind of say like hey those two bombs that we dropped in japan um you know they're they can be good we can use this power for good and certainly you know we've we've seen this in hindsight we can see that yes um radiation can be used for good for lots and lots and lots of things um but it's just interesting to see uh a priest a father keller who had a cold it seemed like uh talking with fred mcmurray who most of us know from my three sons but also the absentminded professor somebody pointed out and double indemnity where he was awesome um to be able to watch them talk about uh atomic energy uh so it seems like very weird but there was this kind of after uh nagasaki and hiroshima there seemed like there was this kind of moral crisis about you know we use this horrible weapon and how can we reconcile that um and i i would say that we didn't 100 reconcile it but that's just me i collect films i'm not a historian um anyway so we watch old 16 millimeter educational films of which that was one this next film is a total break from that it's called rufus n rufus m try again [Music] rufus m that's how rufus learned to write his name but he didn't learn in school he learned in the library and this is how it happened next residence i want a library book too it just came from the library why do you want one anyway you can't read foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] shhh [Music] sorry that book isn't back in the library if you can out i mean your library card can i have one please well you have to be able to write your own name you think you can do that sure oh i'm sorry you can't handle books with hands like that and you washed them we'll consider getting you a card you probably can't even read [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] is that my rufus moffett washing his hands where is the soap i don't believe it see you could have used the bathroom here you know i have my card now all right now you sign your everything you touch seems to get dirty i think i should have you fill out a new card but i suppose this will do oh but you must wash your hands again the bathroom's back there we don't run in the library see okay but you must always have everything clean when you handle books even my feet do two weeks from today now if you keep it any longer you'll have to pay a 5. [Music] now what's wrong do i get a new library card every time i get a book no i think you've been through enough already next time you just show me your card and i'll stamp the book okay that's good okay wait a second [Music] next time he stays home okay bye [Music] two two [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so i was doing some research on rufus m the book came out in 1943 and it's set in connecticut in 1918. uh each chapter of this book tells another story of rufus and his family rufus has a great imagination he uses it to create interesting friends for himself for example a flying horse named jimmy an invisible piano player who lives in the seybolds he decides to create a best friend cardboard cardboard boy who is also rufus's enemy he and his uh friend even ride around uh town on a bicycle rufus is quite persistent he wants a library card even though he can't read yet so he works hard to learn to write his name things are tight for his family it's not easy for rufus's mother to earn enough to feed four children so rufus plants some special rufus beans unfortunately he can't resist from digging them up every day to see if they're growing woodward one is in its final year and rufus m shows its effects on the family with shortages on some food and coal rufus also writes to a soldier at one point asking for a pony from france the book ends with the family celebrating armistice day writing their dreams for the future on paper and then burning them at the stove it won a newbery um honor award well so that's something um rufus m set in 1918 uh in the midst of the flu i wonder if they addressed that um but this film seemed less about rufus and more about um the librarian dealing with rufus and it made me think like you know what i actually have some films made for librarians on what to do in certain situations and i've shown other films that are similar to this what we call trigger films and the idea is that they trigger discussion and you're supposed to look and say like okay you watch the film and then you say like all right what what did the person in this film do right and what did they do wrong what would you do in this situation and so it's a it's room for discussion it's intended to trigger so this one is called library trigger films enjoy [Music] want to talk to donna and i want you to be quiet now donna explain to me what happened about this book after school i came in and i returned my clock now i'll tell you if every boy and girl came in i don't have any more on my show my responsibility to oh listen to got the field i'm sorry sir but our projectors have to be kept out by 9am well i know that but i just got the film and it's for my class the next hour you could check one out for tomorrow morning but another thing sorry that's another trigger film about working with older people um well it's interesting that those uh two things kind of squish together uh anyways uh i love that electronic music during that one segment um and so did you learn a lot more about how to be a better librarian by looking at the bad behavior of the librarians in that film um i didn't really so there you go uh so this next film speaking of bad behavior is uh part of the series that was made by the government um on underage drinking it features les nessmen and or the actor who played les nessman uh richard sanders i think his name is and this is uh about these two girls who have a party and it gets crashed by all the bad kids so here's parties over it's really awesome [Music] and i'll tell you all [Music] about alcohol [Music] first off let's not forget that there is such a thing as a legal drinking age and in many places the buying or even the possessing of alcohol liquor if you're underage i mean problems now keeping that in mind at what age do you think drinking should begin jennifer i think eighteen would be a good age to start you weren't even following mark what why it's already eighteen i i don't see any reason why i have to be that old i mean maybe for hard liquor or something like that but beer or wine or something like that i think you should be maybe 16. well i think the older you are the better because besides your body being more mature and being able to handle it more you're more mature and you know what and you know how much you can handle fred do you really think uh that you're old enough to stupid if you're old enough to drive when you're 16 then you've got enough judgment and maturity to drink when you're 16. i think it's i mean you can get out and get at age ready i know what what they would say if you call on him like they'll say each person is individual and each person can handle his own amount and that no one else can decide for you and stuff but i think until you're 18 when you're 18 just about everybody can handle it to the best of their ability as best they're ever going to so they should wait till they're 18 before they try it well what's not a cookie why don't you agree now what's what's a good age to begin drinking do you think well i think it depends on the individual i mean like there's 30 year old men laying in the gutter you know they can't drink yet either you know 18 and 30 what's the difference you're saying they could be just as immature as 30. immature as they are when they're 14 or just as mature you know okay people that are in the gutter at 30 are probably the people who started drinking they were 11 and 12. how do you know they started out being irresponsible when they're drinking and they still are at 30. bobby what do you think about that well 18 is a good age you know maybe after you start driving you know that's one you know responsibility that you take on so if you can take on alcohol yeah right okay well i don't understand why kids want to start drinking in the first place when they know how you know how the accidents on the roads have been caused by drunken people and things like that and it could really be dangerous don't forget on monday we'll have that report of the interview with the chief of police all right have a nice weekend oh sarah what time is your party tonight about 7 30. okay hey cookie how come you weren't invited to sarah's party tonight sarah's having a party yeah norah said they're just going to be some girls and their parents aren't going to be there oh i looking i do it all the time cool listen i left out plenty of food for you kids oh and there's a frozen pizza in the refrigerator in case you feel like that okay i want your girls to be asleep when we get home it'll be late agreed agreed goodnight huh good night right hey man they'll be doing that somebody might see us big deal some have a little beer so too serious come on wow what a dull looking party people they need us hey i'm not too sure i want to go to this there's a dumb part anyway come on go come on cookie just for a little while come on hey sir what's happening sorry [Music] ah you when was the first time that you ever tasted alcohol okay sarah well about three years ago on new year's eve we were at a new year's eve party in kentucky my mother gave me a sip of her champagne but i didn't like it that was the first time that's the first time you've ever had any champagne bread well i don't get to be at a party just to um try your alcohol i think you know like do it anytime you want to like i did see my you know my old man he drinks a lot and i see him opening the fridge all the time so i guess i was about eight years old and i went you know that's why i want a beer so i went in the fridge and got it out you know so no big deal tell me something ken if you had children how would you want them to first encounter alcohol alcoholic beverages if i had any control over things i i mean i probably would but i wouldn't let them go like a fred said go to the refrigerator i probably wouldn't keep beer around where they could get it did everybody first taste their alcohol except for fred everybody else in the room tell me uh was it usually with their parents present or not oh yeah when you first experience i guess most everybody's had their parents around you know to give it to them well do you think there should be some sort of control or supervision over encountering alcohol yeah i think the first time you drink is with your parents but i think first time you well me first time you get drunk is usually with your friends and at parties yeah that's right oh you mean yeah if you have a party or something if you drink alone you might just drink as much as you want you might overindulge or abuse alcohol don't you think yeah you know isn't it wise to have your parents uh watching after you yes when you begin they probably would i think um like you know at parties people well at parties i go to people don't really just drink it because they like it you know they drink it to get drunk so you think it's better to drink it under parental supervisions i was just saying well yeah you won't abuse it in front of your parents all right now it seems to me from what you've all been saying that the following conclusion is true that while drinking under control supervision of your parents or parents friends may not necessarily be a bad thing drinking alone like carla said can lead to problems but let's not forget that matter of the legal drinking age also i think is the only adult here i should present a view held by many adults perhaps even most that even if there were no legal drinking age kids your age simply can't handle alcohol i don't know crash your airplane body and i recommend lc401 get nice and high and fly around the room [Music] man sidewalks is for sissies so if you want to lie in the gutter like a real man try wino [Music] straight from the bottom this is the nicest one i ever tasted it's the bestest wine in the whole wide world man this thing's almost empty how much have you had anywhere cookies the whole bottle no she didn't come on i just tasted a little i wanted to see what it was like nora what's going on in there fred's getting a little dry oh great hey remember what happened when fred got drunk at the basketball game he started a fight with one of the teachers oh wow what should i do call the police that'll serve him right no call the neighbors ask them for help don't do anything really runner out of alcohol tell and said good dad it's better not to drink on an empty stomach that's what i mean they're learning give them some facts get it out in the open let them recognize for themselves what their alcoholic beverages too in excess of course alcoholic beverages do tend to lower the inhibitions and the result sometimes is disorderly conduct such as rowdy conduct on the streets or cursing or a virginia twang um great film love it uh every aspect of it is really fun for me and i have quite a few films about underage drinking but that one is it's succinct it's not like a 30 minute drama everything's called down um yeah so what do we got lined up here oh yeah uh this next film actually features a um actress that was in um the lottery that i showed she played tessie um the lottery of course was a film that i showed because i thought it was an awesome film and it was uh it freaked everybody out so hopefully this film will not be as triggering and freaky but who knows we'll see what is leaving me um what are you talking about i hope we had a terrible fight larry last night after the party i'm glad you weren't there oh i don't understand you and dad had fights before this was used to but i don't know maybe now when we see each other we'll pay a little more attention we might even end up closer well who's going to take care of things around here like what well who's going to keep mom company i mean i've got school and basketball practice starts next week listen your mother is an adult she can take care of herself she's a strong person believe me i know no one is going to have to babysit for her yeah you make it sound like everything is going to be the same and you know it's not i mean isn't it there's something else you could do you mean like not go yeah larry it isn't easy to explain but this isn't something that just happened last night i don't know how a marriage goes wrong but for some time now we your mother and i just haven't been able to please each other dad does that mean you don't love mom anymore larry it isn't as simple as that i've thought about it a lot but i don't know all the answers myself one thing i do know is i'm gonna miss you i'm gonna miss you too dad say why don't you come downtown with me right now that's sort of uh make it easier on me i don't know well just for an hour to help me get settled in god knows it's gonna be tough enough learning to live in one room well if it's okay with mom good well place looks like new mary what are you going to want for lunch i don't know mom i'm not really hungry yet anyhow i i thought i'd might go downtown and grab a bite with dad what dad asked me huh it's just to help me get settled in harriet an hour or so you expect me to stay here alone today even for an hour mama this point i don't expect any consideration from your father but you i thought you'd think before you asked me something like that harriet don't make such a big deal about it you'll have him all the time listen you no longer have any right to tell me what to do when i feel like making a big deal i'll make a big deal and right now i feel like making a big deal you know if i had any doubt about it stop you didn't have any doubts last night don't tell me you had any this morning well it didn't help any you're telling the boy without me i thought we had agreed we would tell him together but as usual you couldn't wait george you were upstairs packing you could have called me harry i'm through calling you george well son it's up to you you can stay here with your mother or you can ride downtown with me it's okay with both of you i i think i'll think this out myself i'll be back later sorry when alone with larry each of his parents at least tries to keep him out of their fight at the minute the three of them are in the same room his father and mother put him in the position of having to choose between them instead of choosing though larry goes off to think it out on his own what's he got to think about how should he sort out his feelings and when his father says maybe he and larry will be even closer after the separation is that just a pipe dream to make larry feel better or is it possible that removed from the tensions at home they can have a freer and happier relationship larry hints that he might change his plans and go to a local college so that he can stay with his mother to his father he shows anxiety about having to keep her company from now on or should he try to take his father's place as the man of the house how much of his life should he sacrifice to keep his mother happy the younger one is the harder it is to stop thinking of parents as a unit and to start thinking of them separately now maybe learning to know one's parents as individuals distinct from each other is part of maturing but it's tough to have that necessity before you're ready for it how many people feel that it is the duty of the parents to stay together for the children's sake do you agree can unhappily married people keep from creating a tense unhappy atmosphere around them could that be worse in the long run than the immediate shock of separation well lots of families have disagreements even fights and still live happily together can a fight be a positive constructive thing what's the difference between a healthy and unhealthy family fight divorce is increasingly common in our society why do you think that's happening something it's unrealistic to expect two people to remain together all their lives some argue that we should make it harder for people to marry and easier to divorce what do you think downer um so i guess i should have guessed that but beau bridges he had some coffee so i love it just kind of stops and then there's a shot of he just goes and that those are actually kind of endangered films because they didn't really get distribution a lot of them didn't make it to dvd uh some of them were on vhs but a lot of them didn't make it to dvd and certainly not on streaming so there's a whole bunch of films um and i remember as a kid like see i would see like a feature film and then i would see like a tv movie well i'd see a feature film advertised and i would see a tv movie that was similar thematically so that barbara eden won was it the stranger within you know it has that kind of rosemary baby type of vibe to it and maybe that's what it was trying to even though rosemary's baby i don't i think came out in like 69 or something like that but uh there's lots of similarities and then there was actually a tv movie of uh of a sequel whatever happened to rosemary's baby um and uh so yeah tv movies like killdozer and all these really amazing horror films there was the one that's about the war of the worlds broadcast um i remember seeing and like really awesome stuff so um and i think film collectors out there who collect 16 because sometimes these would be distributed on 16. i think they're the ones that are keeping these alive and they have them um you know and hopefully there's television archives that happen but anyways that's a trip down memory lane for those of you who are alive back in the 70s um seeing
