[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] that was pretty great um this part of a show that i did called math with an exclamation point and the challenge is that math films are generally really really tedious and boring um so the challenge for that show was to actually try to find films that were interesting and inspiring and um so what i showed uh it was powers of ten i showed weird number which is a really great film about fractions i think um this film um i did show day without numbers because it's it involves a creepy puppet making all the numbers go away um and then what i would love to show you but i'm just not going to be able to because i'm afraid uh is donald and math magic land which is a really great film that kind of talks about some math concepts like the golden section or golden neck tank excuse me golden rectangle uh talks about vector math um pretty great pretty great stuff but this one i i love because there's no narration and it's just you know you kind of tap your feet bob your head as you see the names of various uh curves appear um and somebody in the comments posted about the spirograph which was a toy that i had at least two iterations of i kept losing pieces um but anyways those you could explore a lot of those uh those curves using a spirograph um so there you go uh anyways i'm skip alzheimer if i didn't say so and uh welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show we try to show you old educational films that i have uh in my collection of over 30 000 films i really don't know how many films i have i mean it's it was a pretty solid number around 24 000 but then i got this giant batch of 14 pallets of films and so even though those aren't technically mine they i still have them in my possession so i'm counting them for now because i'm paying rent on the storage space um so i don't know how many i actually have and what i kind of realized is that it's kind of doesn't matter it's it's not how many films you have it's what you do with the film and so i'm hoping that showing you the films is bumping me up in the film collector world because i'm sharing what i have and that was the whole point to begin with is i i didn't want to cover the film and just keep it on a shelf i really wanted to show it as m as much to as many people as i can so thank you for participating in that thank you next film is actually on film i have a film transfer machine here tell us any and so i've been able to actually watch films and show you films that i haven't seen before so this is one i have seen before but it's it's pretty great maybe it's timely i don't know so here's what liberty and justice means one nation under god with liberty and justice for all perhaps you say these words quite often do you really know what they mean liberty what does liberty mean to you [Music] liberty means to be free free to do what you want oh are we free to get in someone else's way is your father free to choose the kind of work he does being free to choose is liberty did your family choose the place you live how many different kinds of houses people live in if each family is free to choose a place to live then we have liberty all around you you can see examples of liberty in the stores we're free to choose the things we buy and where we buy them being free to choose is liberty [Music] in your own community you can see churches and temples of many different [Music] kinds each person has liberty to believe as he chooses what about school what does liberty mean here how many per student how many for andrew in school just as in the community and at home liberty means being free to choose susan is our new monitor in fact our country was first started because people wanted liberty long long ago in the days before our country began people in many lands were ruled by kings [Music] sometimes a king was unfair for some kings told their people where to live and what kind of work they must do often a king even told the people what church they could go to and the people were not free and so some families left their homes to move to a new land far across the sea the name of the new land was america here they would have liberty to believe what they chose liberty to go to school [Music] liberty to say what they thought and choose their own leaders people who came from many lands learned to get along and rule themselves so that each one could be free and so we too must learn to rule ourselves and sometimes that isn't easy just watch let's start the game come on let's go i'm up i'm up come on what happens when each person tries to get his own way does anyone have liberty now this is something like a traffic jam that could happen at any corner if the signal stopped working [Music] how do you get things moving it now again uh catcher should be up first because he stays back here and he gets all the balls and try his best right and then the picture down in the first baseman and then when we have rules to follow rules that are fair then each person knows his turn will come [Music] it's the same in the community we have fair rules so that each person can be free being fair is called justice and there can be no liberty without justice for example what happens here if we let just one person break the rules does anyone have liberty now being fair is called justice chris [Music] and when you stand up for justice you help to keep your own liberty wherever you find liberty look again and you'll find justice all right in class discussions we cannot be free to give our ideas unless we also listen to other people i don't think it matters in the community we cannot be free to believe as we choose unless we also raise the beliefs of others think how many kinds of liberty we enjoy and how each one depends on being fair and can you be yourself unless there is liberty and justice for all so good old-fashioned civics lesson from the 70s um i won't say anything else just leave it at that um what i will say is this next film uh i want to say thank you william now i'm going to punish you for your the coffee that you just gave me by showing a mime film this film has mimes in it get ready mimes are ninja clowns so brace yourself it's short but it's necessary this is called guessing game so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] uh [Music] uh [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] ah [Music] [Music] so [Applause] oh mimes now more than ever um it's part of a really amazingly weird series encyclopedia encyclopedia britannica was often considered the really boring corny educational film company like they weren't willing to really do anything that was super exciting they were very standard normal um but in the 60s late 60s things went nuts and so this was part of those series there was a it's called magic moments uh and there's like let's go let's do um and there's others and i've shown some in this series and they are just for adults they're just like what is going on what is happening and these are meant to be provocative these are meant to get kids talking about what they see and interacting with the film and thinking critically about what they see and all that stuff adults can't tolerate it it's hard but uh mimes man sorry william sorry everybody it seems like there's more than one person who has an adverse reaction to mimes but we have to desensitize ourselves uh to get back what we lost this is one of the things that we've lost from the 70s we had bell bottoms we had hair the beards we had all this other going back to the 70s and 80s but we have not had a re-emergence of mimes and i think we have lost something because of that all right there's my soapbox um this next film is a uh brigham young university film about relationships and marriage and stuff like that and like many of the films uh it's a question um are you the one so this is a uh film that explores a couple maybe a couple of couples uh to see are is the person they matched up with are they the one are they the good one you know i don't know um but wait a minute actually no i'm not gonna show that yet now yeah i'm i'm gonna go enjoy it let's go for it all right try me um i think we'd better get back come on [Music] hey look marilyn 12 years they've been married and they're still on a honeymoon gee that's great i hope i can have a marriage like that [Music] could i see your necking license please have some marshmallow sticks hey did that walk bring back your appetite doug here's another sandwich oh no thanks you keep it she'd have me as big around as i am tall oh you can just thank me that he's alive today you know when he first started boarding with us three years ago he was the most lean hungry looking student the campus had ever seen and then shirley went to work on him and like with everything else she does she was a rousing success well thank you hey kids come on over here marshmallow time for each of you hey how about us well here you go jesus thanks a lot for inviting us i'm glad you could come we uh sort of like to demonstrate the joy of family life as often as possible you sure did a good job of that doug never stops talking about you two well he couldn't have a better example than michael mama my mom's on fire and i hereby present him with a marshmallow speech i like you thank you [Music] there you go well you know i wonder why my folks never took that them oh i don't know the way you describe them they don't sound much like picnic people to me what do you mean well honey a picnic's a pretty conventional thing your folks aren't dad that isn't fair honey oh nothing against your parents it's just that they're different differ from what for my folks for one thing you're folks isn't everybody oh now what do you mean your father sounds like the closest thing i've ever heard of to queen victoria come on how do we get on this why you're attacking my parents um excuse me i meant to attack their daughter oh [Music] what wonderful thinking of doug esther i really think this is it you know what i think we're going to be late for work if you don't get a move on [Music] as of last night i got it all figured out what figured out my marriage why die i'm sort of performing an autopsy in this marriage class i'm taking yeah well i know now how good marriage can be and i want to be ready for her when the chance comes again i've been batting my brains to figure out what i did that was wrong what he did that was wrong what that drive it did that was wrong but when it comes right down to it it's this we just should never have gotten married in the first place oh it was no good it was just a lousy match of course we were kids then we didn't know what marriage was all about but now at least i'm more mature i think i'll be better able to judge well weren't you in love with bill love sure if you mean did he turn me on wow but let me tell you something sweetheart contrary to popular opinion once the marriage knot is tied making love is not your only occupation but could you have known all this beforehand all these differences sure if i've been smart for instance we went to visit his parents they didn't like me and i didn't like them felt out of place huh like a pork chop in a synagogue gee doug and i haven't met each other's folks yet so far we're neither one too impressed and friends another thing that bugged us i didn't like his and he couldn't in fact we never agreed on anything important i guess the only thing we had going for us was sex and even that can get to be pretty unjustifying if nothing else is right well just don't make the same mistake the second time right and don't you make it the first time don't worry mama hey how about this for the dance tomorrow cute forever [Music] i wish i knew i need your love to be i wish [Music] thank you see ya that's a beautiful dress do you like it it's nice you know it's going to take some rich man to keep you in the style to what you're becoming accustomed it's working in that dress shop i see something and i just can't resist it put yourself on a budget budget how boring you may have to someday i'll think about it tomorrow [Music] hey there's real butter in this frosting margaret no bakeries these days use butter well dad there are some people who take pride in your work who like to put out a good product not in the business world you get as much as you can for the least effort what's the matter i'm just wondering how it would be to have a cynic for a husband no more challenging than to marry apollyanna someone who's naive and gullible but what about children doug don't they need to grow up feeling secure knowing the world's a safe place is it safe of course it is okay okay hey speaking of children i promise surely i'd take the kids off her hands tomorrow she's got a club meeting how about you and i taking them to the zoo sure i love the zoo [Music] [Applause] my [Music] [Music] i'm starving you know what your mother said only the popcorn please no oh come on doug i'll buy the hot dogs for them look honey i i told shirley i do what she said now the kids have eaten nothing but john babe cause her mother's going to have dinner on the table in half an hour if they're full of hot dogs she won't be happy aren't you ever a child dog what's a visit to the zoo without hot dogs part of the what part of the ritual and what these kids need more than hot dogs is a little self-control how many people could use just a little self-control meaning me you said that you know you'll probably spoil your children rotten and why not children are entitled to a little spoiling before long they're adults and it's all over and if they're spoiled kids they'll be spoiled adults children think the whole universe has to revolve around them these days maryland but i'm not going to be mean to my kids but i do want to help them develop a little self-control and responsibility now can't you see that i don't see what all this has to do with having a hot dog at the zoo i think you're mean [Music] hi kid you have a good time yeah boy was it fun good daddy marshall go on now you two get washed up did you and surely ever disagree on much before you got married nothing important we sort of took our time got to know each other pretty thoroughly well there was the time i wanted to dye my hair and michael about how to fit did you do it no it was a struggle but he finally convinced me i was gorgeous just the way i was you have to think alike on the essentials and then with the minor things you well you have to be able to give and take are you in maryland having troubles doug sort of for instance what if we had children and didn't agree on how to raise them he believes in spanking and i don't they grew up neurotic don't we all you know what else sometimes i think we just look at life differently he thinks i'm gullible and well sometimes i think he's a little bit cynical marilyn why don't you come with me tonight where my marriage class this is exactly what we're talking about how to find out if you're a good match if you're compatible and it's informal we all just discuss things oh i don't know all that scientific stuff bores me besides i don't want a marriage arranged by a computer you'd prefer one arranged by a gland look marilyn i don't go for the cold calculating approach either but this time around i'm going to be just a little more intelligent about it you know an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and i got the pounds to prove it okay why not and hurry so far i've got a perfect attendance record for sitting right by the most eligible boy in the class this morning i found a good comment on love and marriage if of all words of tongue and pen the saddest are it might have been more sad are these we daily see it is but had not to be [Music] you probably all know at least one marriage like this we counselors see them all the time people who if they have been better matched would have been spread a lot of grief and had much richer lives story of mine while much as you try to avoid it mismatching will occur frequently the couple involved just gets carried away by their emotions every marriage has both positive and negative elements and the more compatible two people are the more positive their marriage will be now we've already mentioned temperament what are some other compatibilities needs for instance my mother needed she really needed to belong to every social club and and committee there was around or thought she needed one year she was president of three women's clubs we nearly starved that year and she was always after dad to try for this or that even wanted him to run for a county office drove him nuts he couldn't have cared less about all that well another compatibility that's important is role conceptions and believe me on this one i know what i'm talking about last year i was engaged to a boy who wanted a wife to be a housekeeper a cook and a babysitter he wanted to make all the decisions and i was supposed to wait on him hand and foot before long i realized that this setup wasn't for me but would this boy be a good mate for another girl well sure he'd be okay for a girl who wanted to settle for that now that's an important point someone who isn't the best match for you might be quite compatible with the next person any other compatibilities what about values like uh how do the two of you look at life look at people feeling the same about religion family size leisure time and like my folks for example they could never agree on how to spend money mom would have bought books all the time books and paintings and if you could have dad would have had a dozen sports cars money that's a tough one gosh with all these things to worry about it's wonder anybody's married i know but remember needs values etc are just the specifics we can point to in discussing compatibility there's something else that governs the way people get along a kind of overall personality reaction you have to tiptoe around in your relationship you embarrass each other or are you comfortable enough together to air your troubles without feeling rejected are you honestly proud of each other if so you can be flexible enough to adapt and to help each other grow so how do you get answers to all these things run your date through an ibm machine not your date just your data as a matter of fact there are some things you can do to get to know your prospective mate better things we too often ignore now then are you all warmed up then let's have the first group move into place and we'll take our compositional studies [Music] [Applause] hi here have you finished your composition how did you like it it was interesting you hated it well no i didn't 15 good looking girls and black leotards how could i hate it i i'm not sure i understood it but you hated it i knew you would well no i didn't modern dance requires a sense of beauty an appreciation of movement and emotion and it's a challenge a real thrill to dance a lot more productive way to spend your time than fishing you hate it i knew you would i don't hate it it's just boring dancing is relaxing and creative at the same time besides i want to teach it someday i thought you want to get married someday of course i do but that doesn't mean i still can't dance or teach does it i guess that depends on who you marry all right what's your wife going to do your wife and the mother seems to me that's enough of a career women can vegetate that way dad we have been emancipated you know look what's more important jumping around with a bunch of women are black leotards are taking care of a home and children it's not an either or thing doug you can do both but not well how come we've never talked about these things before just never came up i guess hey doug is that all we have in common that's a pretty good start but with us it's not only where we start but where we end up some growing relationship we've got but don't get all excited about it i will get excited if i want to um oh dad i'm sorry oh esther it was awful is he mad at you oh no he doesn't get mad he just stays calm and collected and makes me feel like an idiot in fact we're alike and practically nothing compatibility wow oh melon i don't know this is gonna sound pretty square but maybe it's better to find out now than later huh but esther i don't want to break up with him i love him i think what do you mean i love him sure you melt when you're in his arms but what else one day he'll be a 70 year old man what will you two be sharing then look breaking up's no fun but it's a picnic compared to doing it after marriage but maybe he'll change esther or maybe i will he could decide it's not so bad for women to work a little outside the home and i could change her mind about disciplining children and things like that well people can change but i wouldn't count on it i couldn't get bill to change so much as his table manners if you're gonna marry doug marry him for what he is now there are some things you can help them to change if your relationship's right but there are some things doug can't change and there are some things you can't change either [Music] so [Music] [Music] uh meryl and i i think maybe we hadn't better see each other for a while anyway i know we don't seem to be making it do we no [Music] i like you a lot doug i guess we're just not terribly compatible yeah yeah i've been thinking about it i i know i'm really not what you needed a husband then and there are other girls i guess that are closer to what you need in a wife maybe [Music] the thing is marilyn i i know that marriage can be great the match is right and if you work at it that's what i want from me and i want the same thing for you but i just like you so much i want you to be happy i really do i know i'll always remember you doug and all the fun that we've done together i hope we can still be good friends i'm sure i'll check back now and then who knows what might happen in a year so hey uh let's not waste that music so the rule of thumb as some of you pointed out in the comments is if there's a relationship or dating film that's a question the answer is always no so uh should i marry outside of my faith no should am i ready for marriage no are you the one no so no spoilers there but that's kind of what happens all right uh this next film is uh kind of an introduction to a series called one to grow on which was a government film series about i guess adolescent growth and very similar to the inside out series in that there's these situations that are presented and then the kids interact in them and then we explore at the end like what did they how did you feel about that blah blah blah but here's the kind of beginning thing this wouldn't be shown to kids this would be shown to teachers um so here it is one to grow on prologue [Applause] one to grow on a new set of tools developed by the national institute of mental health to stimulate thinking about mental health issues related to teacher-student interaction in the classroom the idea for this program grew out of the basic concern of parents teachers and mental health workers for helping the student in the process of personal growth a teacher who is sensitive to the young person's needs feelings and interests and who understands his own potential as the shaper of classroom experiences can provide important help classroom mental health holds the potential for enhancing every child's ability to develop his humanness skill and decision-making self-understanding and a sense of responsibility one to grow on is a series of six films with print materials designed as a catalyst a core of impressions and data around which personal and collective problems can be discussed and solutions suggested the first film in the series is a documentary study of three uniquely different high school students in a single history class each participates with his own special set of motives needs and values oh i like history as a subject pretty much i don't like the teacher he gives uh assignments that most of them are strictly opinion and uh i don't see how he can really grade it i don't think there's i'm probably there's not a right answer or wrong answer here i like the facts you know just the straight facts mike was a person with lots of leadership and he proved that by being able to make senior patrol leader he helped other boys in in scouting so that they were able to advance i think i told you i had his name down wrong in the road book i had it spelled l-a-y-m-o-r and for weeks i called him by the wrong name and he never even corrected me he has love of country love of god and love of family i just think he's a good boy doug i don't know why do you think one of the answers before that we're given was it or well let him try it up um well i don't know i can't answer him oh i don't know he just doesn't uh have a great deal of interest in what's going on his outside life really has so much more glamour to it they uh spot you like in baseball you know and then they'd sponsor you you know and usually like if someone sponsors you you know that means you're gonna be uh around motorcycles for a pretty long time you know but basically i just feel that i just want him to do what he wants to do and be happy maybe i'm just being too lenient with them i really don't know if there's 100 turnout in all of the states a person can have a majority of electoral votes by taking 19.7 percent of the popular vote i asked about the sign of the declaration of dependents people who'd signed the declaration and i the textbook and i expect every kid in the class to put down john hancock and he put down button gwyneth yeah anytime he's interested in anything we library research it and we let him go on tours and he had tour around the united states and anything at all that's within our means that will help in his stimulation i like the lunch periods at the math club i like that very much but uh i don't know about school i don't i don't have any feelings i don't think about it 50.1 percent in all of the smallest states up to 270 electoral votes yeah our system could be do you understand what he said following are two dramatic incidents presenting specific problems confronting teenagers in their struggle to understand themselves and their relationships with their school and home environments well what am i supposed to do what am i supposed to do accept your own responsibility i don't believe you accepting my responsibility i don't believe that sir i'm going to suspend you take this into the outer office fill it out take it home and have your parents sign it i'll go to that class and thank you my parents will ever find out do you understand this would this would destroy them maybe i can do something i'll try we let sarah get away with this would be setting a very dangerous precedent we can't assume responsibility for the child's action well the problem was all solved last friday and i can assure you that she's promised me and i trust her and she will go to class regularly from now on they just well i hate this is so cliche but uh they don't understand me sex is a big responsibility young lady and you're not going to bed until we discuss it do you hear me now i'm your mother look lindsay this is the second day that you stayed after school you keep looking at me very directly in the eyes now i'm sitting here with you and i'm available to you if there's something you want to tell me or ask me there's really nothing i think it's just a phase at the moment i think all parents must be going through a phase like this is nothing really to be concerned about you know the last three documentaries present classroom techniques and models it is understood that there is no one set of answers to help all teachers but that effective use of such techniques must grow out of a shared need felt by both teacher and student [Applause] i've been teaching for 15 years and i find that uh my classroom is much less structured now than it was when i first started teaching i uh well as a result of the class meetings i think i listened to the needs of the children mark i did too come up here maury and show us exactly what happened then it was like that so what was accomplished by acting out the fight what i was trying to show the rest of the class is that this didn't accomplish very much they're one pushing the other and the other pushing back and i think i was just using that as an example for the other children to come up with some ideas you want to come all by yourself why all the kids go this way which way do you go straight would you like to walk home with dinner okay so you have somebody to walk home with okay i think as a result of our class meetings she began to realize that the children in our room were genuinely interested in helping her and i think she began to feel that the children were really trying to be her friends since i'm blind and you know you can't put up your hands today you couldn't last time but you did figure out a way of getting my attention by saying something like oh or just say my name you can say my name say mr lianza remember uh one of the things we talked about that you do when you teach somebody else something what did they do we did discuss that you had to control yourself because you might get a little bit frustrated right the person didn't learn what you wanted them [Music] well you have to teach him the way that they do it because like things might have changed and they might have done it a different way the baby dinosaurs were hatched from edge it's a baby bad in our classroom we have a system that we call alpha and omega [Applause] the children omega plan their day more or less the children in alpha do not plan their day they must go along with our plans being an alpha means there's a schedule in the wall and that your time is structured for you what do you want for yourself as a member of elsa a child in omega can plan their own day for the most part realizing they have certain obligations every day everybody writes down what they did and they put it in their book because i give it see if if like spelling's not down and then we know we have to just spell it for a child to learn self-direction is the most important thing because if they don't have that then we're brainwashing children they've got to be able to go their own learning way more time is spent with children and parents by teachers than by any other professional group in many instances the teacher is representative of the community for the child the school therefore has the potential to help a child understand his and others dependencies feelings fears and joy these films will find their value as discussion tools reminding us that every experience whether it be intense conflict or the shared joy of learning something new can be one to grow on uh so it's a teaching tool for teachers to kind of say like hey this is what's in the series um and i have a couple of those in that series i have sarah at least um the other ones i need to kind of follow up but uh national institute of mental health nim as in mrs frisby in the rats of nim so that's um nim uh thanks everybody for tuning in today i'm sorry that i punished you with minds but not really um i think it's it's time for us to uh start working through our mind problem um because
