my [Music] when you're at home there's probably quite a bit of time when you're with another person or with two people or with more than two people so if a problem comes up a safety problem for instance it's possible for you and the other people to cooperate and take care of the problem together but sometimes other people might not be around you might have to be home alone this happens sometimes to everyone but when it does problems can still come up so you need ways to take care of them by yourself and the best way to do that is not to wait until the problems happen but to plan with an adult what to do about them before they happen together you can talk about the sort of problems that might come up you can decide on safe ways to take care of them and you can even practice what you should do about each one if you know ahead of time how to handle each problem you can feel good about being home alone there are all kinds of things you can plan to do for instance suppose that you have to be home alone for a little while after school each day and when you come home you need to let yourself in the door is locked so you need to carry a key with you and you need a way to be sure you don't lose that key adults have to keep track of their keys too so this is a problem everyone has you and an adult would probably plan for you to keep your key on a chain perhaps in your pocket or around your neck the chain should be long enough so you can use the key without taking it off the chain and when you're not using it you should keep the key where other people can't see it you should practice with an adult to be sure the key works and so you know exactly how to use it when you're alone since having a key and keeping it with you is so important if your key got lost you'd have a big problem so part of your plan might be to leave an extra key for emergencies with a neighbor or some other place where only you can find it this plan might not work for everyone but the important thing is to have some plan so you always know what to do you should also plan what to do in case other unusual things happen when you're alone for instance suppose you don't expect anyone to be home but when you get there you notice that the door is already unlocked or even open or that a window isn't closed that was closed when you left in the morning or that a window is broken or a ladder or something else that shouldn't be there is under a window these things could mean there's a very serious problem they could mean that someone is inside who shouldn't be and it might not be safe for you to go in so if you see things like this don't go in go to a neighbor's house instead and then call home it's possible that someone in your family is home early if no one answers the phone call the police and let them solve the problem but suppose instead that when you get home there aren't any problems everything is fine you unlock the door go inside close the door and lock it now it might be a good idea for you to make a safety check for instance make sure all the windows and doors are locked and look for anything that isn't the way it should be it's also a good idea to call a member of your family or whoever expects to hear from you so someone else knows everything is okay the plan you and an adult make together should take care of every kind of big problem that might come up when you're home alone for instance it should tell you what to do when someone comes to the door you and the adult should decide who is allowed in when you're home alone and who isn't but one thing you'd certainly have in your plan is this never open the door for anyone you don't know why because your safety is more important than anything the person might want don't even open the door a little not even if you have a safety chain if you have a peephole in your door that lets you look out without opening the door you could use it to see who's there to find out what the person wants you could talk through the door but and this is very important don't say your home alone you could say that your parent or relative can't come to the door right now you don't have to say anything else if the person wants to know more or wants to use your telephone or want some other kind of help tell whoever it is to find help someplace else if you end up feeling bad for any reason call an adult on the phone someone who can make you feel better and explain what happened but what do you do if you get a phone call most calls to your home are probably friendly but some might not be your plan for phone calls should be pretty much like your plan for a person at the door again never say your home alone just say that your parent or relative can't come to the phone right now that's all you need to say no matter who is asking take a message if there is one with the caller's name and number you can say that you'll tell the person it's for to call back if the person on the phone wants to keep on talking or talks about things that sound strange to you you don't have to be polite you can just hang up when you plan with an adult how to answer the phone when you're alone you should also practice doing it so when you're home alone and you get a phone call you feel safe and ready for anything but what about the times when you need to use the phone to call someone you can make that easier too by planning to have a list of telephone numbers ready near the phone where you can always find them it should include the work numbers of people you live with and the number of a neighbor who's home during the day so it's always easy for you to call someone to talk to it should also list the telephone numbers to call in an emergency nine one one if your community has that service or zero for operator and the numbers for places like the police department and the fire department you should plan with an adult exactly what to do and what number to call to get help in emergencies there are all kinds of emergencies for instance if you hurt yourself while you're alone you have to know who to call for help and of course you have to know your street address and the name of the town you live in so you can tell the help where to find you or here's a very different kind of emergency suppose you're home alone and you think someone's trying to break in or someone has broken in in that case your plan should be something like this first get out of the house and then go to some other telephone and dial either 911 if that's in your plan or zero for operator to get the police you and an adult could make arrangements with a neighbor so you could use the neighbor's phone in an emergency like this or if there's a pay phone near your home you could include that in your plan and practice using it if someone is in your house who shouldn't be there and if you can't get out you should hide as well as you can then when you feel it's safe get out and call for help what should your plan be if the emergency in your home is a fire first don't try to put out a fire by yourself even small fires are dangerous instead get out of the house as fast as you can and don't stop to take anything with you then after you're out call the fire department immediately you might never need to call any emergency number of course because emergencies are a kind of problem that might never happen especially if one part of your planning is for how to prevent emergencies when you checked and locked all doors and windows you helped prevent break-ins you and an adult could help prevent other kinds of emergencies by deciding together which things you shouldn't use and which things are safe to use then just in case very small injuries happen anyway you should have a first aid kit and learn how to use it if you and an adult talk about problems and make plans like this together you'll have a lot you can do to make yourself safe and ready for just about any problem when you're home alone [Music] but even then you still might feel lonely and afraid sometimes everyone who's home alone feels this way at one time or another and different people find different ways to make themselves feel better it helps some people to know they can talk to another person on the phone when they need to some people use tv or radio for company some people find it helpful to plan many things to think about and to do but one thing you could do is to make sure you know when someone is going to be back home with you and if that person is going to be late have someone call to tell you that way you'll know when your time alone will end and when you'll be back with your family [Music] hello welcome everybody i'm skip alzheimer and uh this is our av geeks lunchtime streaming show that first film uh on your own at home an animated film by coronet um and it features a little prince and princess who are at home at the castle by themselves and what they should do this is of course all about latch key kids which was a phenomenon that was growing in the late 70s and early 80s as both parents were going to work and certainly something that my sister and i we were latchkey kids but we had cable tv so we would come home and just immediately start watching cable television yeah um really kind of fascinating though it's an interesting look and it's it's a shift from uh earlier films that talk about the safety being safe at home and if you have a parent at home although last week we showed where's tommy where the mother was out playing bridge as the little toddler was uh i think he was older than toddler but the little kid was basically walking around the house starting fires and uh eating pills and uh other assorted things before he magically disappeared uh so this next film is another kind of uh how-to film safety film and this one is uh fascinating because it is so optimistic uh compared to other films in the genre this one's called you can beat the atom bomb or the atomic bomb and um yeah it's uh it's definitely more optimistic than duck and cover but it is basically assuming that one thing will happen which is that a bomb will burst in the air versus uh on the ground and that's a big there's a big difference and that big difference is mostly related to fallout and also the fact that if it's burst in in the air it's there's a going to be impact blast and some fire but not as much as if it landed on the ground so anyways here's you can beat the atomic bomb within this universe there are many natural elements and forces at work and in his search for truth and the betterment of his lot man has uncovered gravity the invisible anchor that keeps him safely bound to earth electromagnetic force which he uses in industry and atomic power the explosion of an inconceivably tiny particle of matter setting off similar explosions in other atoms the energy of the apple scientists have long known about radiation one of atomic energy's chief characteristics today they can detect the amount of radioactivity present at a given time with many specialized instruments one of these is the geiger counter see what is that clicking you must be radioactive wait a minute don't worry you see your watch has radiation but it comes from the paint on the numbers that make it glow in the dark what do you know about that i've been carrying radioactivity around with me and didn't even know it of interesting little aid to man's physical well-being have been the discoveries of medical science in the field of radiation the most recent medical research in radiation has produced a whole battery of radioactive mitts manufactured at oak ridge tennessee and sent to hospitals all over the country atomic weapons to save lives and in the field of industry advances in the use of radioactive substances are constantly benefiting man's search for newer and better methods of production and we need every sheet of steel plated exactly the critical thickness no more no less how can you get a measuring device sensitive enough to show a variation of 1 10 000 of an inch without stopping production we can use radiation how you station a radioactive substance at this point in the production line and pass the steel over over the steel you put a gauge to measure the amount of radiation coming through now if the steel plate varies in thickness in one direction or another the amount of radiation getting through to the gauge will vary and that gauge will register the chain looks as though you're beating it bob but what about the atom bomb it has been stated that to speak of atomic energy in terms of the atomic bomb is the same as speaking of electricity in terms of the electric chair it is true however that the energy which gives us the power to heal the heat and light to make things move and grow is the same energy released in the explosion of the a-bomb to state and local governments cause the responsibility for action and cooperation within the limits of their own jurisdiction the local air raid warden of world war ii with his white tin hat will have a new more specialized fellow worker the radiological monitor or meter man his job will be to determine the extent of contamination by radiation in atomic attack the meter men will probably not use the geiger counter because it is primarily for sensitive measurements their basic instruments of detection will be ion chambers which accurately measure larger amounts of radiation in addition the community civil defense unit will set up attack warning devices suitable shelter in case of emergency emergency communication centers adequate fire fighting equipment hospital and first aid facilities every person has heard some of the rumors and old wives tales of this atomic era we've been giving you this information well the boys down the plant you know there's a limit to what this a-bomb can do you ask me if a flight from an atomic bomb could blind not if you look directly at the burst in bright daylight at night it might last for an hour or two but in either case it would only be temporary now as for the radiation of the bomb the chances that it will change your ability to have children or that it will affect any future children you might have are less than one in a million radiation will not make a plate uninhabitable forever possibly temporarily no the atom bomb will not blow up the world then what will it do the three ways in which an atom bomb does its work are no mystery the first is flash or fire the second effect is blast these first two effects of the a bomb are therefore but a tremendously magnified version of any simple explosive it is the a-bomb's third effect that is entirely new to explosives radiation or radioactivity but this radiation can be stopped for example six feet of earth three feet of concrete or a foot of steel all provide sufficient protection against radioactivity even very close to the center of explosions fire blast and radiation these are the three effects of an atomic explosion which endanger man you are given warning if there is a designated shelter or a reinforced concrete building available go to it without delay but even at home you can effectively defend yourself elsie where are you i'm closing all the upstairs good get down from there as soon as you can close all the windows draw the blinds and pull the drapes in front of them that'll keep out fire sparks and glass splinters if the windows break close all the doors behind you too we've got to make this place practically airtight check everything here that might cause fire complete coverage is what you're after the light colors reflect the heat and protect you from flashburn it's better to wear coveralls because they're loose and i can take them off and leave them outside in case they become contaminated the heavier the cloth the better the insulation elsie you'd better pull the drapes on the windows back there joe turn on the radio what about mrs canning the aircraft spotter does she have to stay outside in here she'll be spotting for planes all right and for people like her who have to stay outdoors in an emergency heavy loose-fitting all-white clothing is the best protection follow instructions very little time left since radiation travels in straight lines i'd say the way i fix this corner of the basement gives us plenty of wall and earth and material between us and the possible military objectives we're well protected from the window too yes sir even if a bomb blew the house over we'd have a pretty good chance here in the basement the walls can never be too thick no children i i want you to sit down here against the wall that's it now crouch tied up against now listen kids if they're dropping an atomic bomb it may go off any second now never happens i'll give the signal when it's all right for us to get up if there's an explosion we'll wait about a minute after it's all over then we'll go upstairs and take a look around see if it's all right for us to clean up this man has made good use of the time given in by warning with calm and intelligence he has employed the means of self-defense at his disposal thus every man can greatly increase the chanting his family and himself through any attack unscathed but this man has an advantage a well-protected seller there is no basement in the neighborhood seek shelter on the first floor of the house and in a room with solid walls with as many walls as possible between you and the probable target area get under a sturdy object table desk bed close to the wall if debris should fall the two will provide good protection the most important thing is to keep out of line with the windows and to close them up so that broken glass will not fly in lie down flat on your stomach cover your face with your right arm so that it is protected by your elbow grasp the back of your neck with your left hand but wherever a substantial underground shelter is available it provides the surest safest possible protection against atomic attack civil defense bulletin this has been an air burst all persons attached to civil defense groups report to your post immediately let's go folks lc bring the blankets we'll find out what happened to the windows what about the radiation well this was an air burst honey if the radiation didn't get to us when the atomic bomb exploded just about all the dangerous stuff is gone it went straight up into the air the terrific heat makes it do that and i don't think we're close enough to ground zero for the radiation to have even touched us [Music] elsie you better check those blankets up around the window so that we can keep the house warm i'm going outside to see if the house has been damaged by fire if we're all right i'll have to check the neighborhood will you be honest if there are any fires honey they're just ordinary fires and we're supposed to help stop them children you better clear up the broken glass and all this debris all in all i'd say we've been very lucky around it nothing to do now but wait for orders from the authorities and relax i'd hate to have gone through this without warning you're out in the open without warning you are startled by an intense flash of light you have seconds before the shockwave will hit you before the debris starts flying hit the girth get behind the nearest and best shelter a a depression of any kind but get down flat on the ground flat on your stomach with your right arm covering your face your left hand grasping the back of your neck if you're out in the open area die for the nearest concrete archway the nearest and best shelter cover your mouth and nose with your handkerchief it will help to keep out any possible radioactive dust if you are blinded it is only temporary with a blast over get out of the wreckage remembering to keep as clean as possible you're inside perhaps in your own apartment when the flash occurs you have seconds move toward the nearest doorway corridor or a stairway or get under a bed or table or get behind a couch or other large heavy [Music] objects are you all right mother yes alice alex turn on the radio where's buddy i think he was our playing ball mother pull the drapes and shield the windows with them he must have been caught out there in the blast civil defense bulletin this city has just undergone a surprise atomic attack this was an air burst check for fires further bulletins are following immediately shouldn't we go out and look for buddy no you've been very disaster units will take care of he's all right he'll come home draw a pan full of water right away alice and keep it covered won't it be radioactive no and then don't take too much otherwise you'll pull down the water pressures the firefighters need i'd better go out on the fire escape and see whether any fires have been started mother go downstairs and see if old mrs simmons is all right fine i'll go but let me know just as soon as you hear what's happened to buddy a buddies here is home buddy tell me quickly where were you when the bomb dropped i was playing ball at the school diamond i came home as fast as i could i ran all the way are you all right oh you're hurt school is closer to where the i get buddy's clothes off then take him into the bedroom and have him lie down immediately clean up any of the cuts or bruises and bandages boy it was hot grandma i never felt anything so hot but he was much closer to the bomb than we were do you think he could have been exposed to prompt radiation i'm afraid he was in the danger range he shouldn't have exercised so much running home after the blast corey we've got to get into a doctor no alice we're going to follow through cleaning up the house just as if we hadn't been caught unaware and as for buddy the best way to help radiation sickness is to lie down and rest until you get medical attention if buddy has heavy nausea within two hours it means he may have gotten a dose of radiation i said may if he has sickness induced by radiation isn't necessarily fatal that's when we're getting medical attention now we have work to do what can i do oh any of the food that was out in the open during the blast has to be kept separate from the rest then as soon as we're notified to use the water wash everything cans of food pots and pans the sink but leave anything that you think might be contaminated to be tested later by the radiological crew wouldn't it be best to just get out of the city no if any evacuations be carried on the proper authorities will decided we'll be notified and get orders and instructions right now the safest place dialys cement apartment house no not much blast only a few broken windows and chances are but you'll be all right doctors can be asian sickness considerably by using whole blood don't worry this man caught unaware by acting quickly and sensibly has minimized the danger to himself and his family from the after effects of an atomic air burst while most americans need consider only the air burst in their plans for self-defense against the a-bomb to people living on the shores of large bodies of water the water burst brings additional danger in the case of an atom bomb detonated under water there is hardly any danger from flash there is still danger from blast and its resulting debris but the area of damage is small but the severe danger is from radiation lingering radiation the radiation is trapped in the water and the heat and blast cause the water to rise then it falls causing mist which emits radiation wherever it falls civil defense bulletin this has been a water burst stay inside or get inside and wait for further instructions from your local civil defense authorities we aren't even going to budge for about an hour after that we may have to wait another 24 hours before we even think about going outdoors that radioactive mist will settle on everything contaminate everything it touches the rule is keep away from the moisture to stay as far away from radioactive mist and water as you can that's right sir well then we'd better go upstairs and fix the living room windows they're probably broken and the moisture will get to us that way no stay put we've taken every precaution to defend ourselves against radiation already if we move to unprotected parts of the house now we may get a bad dose of radiation so we'll stay put for at least an hour once we were outside there then we'd get inside quickly and behind enough material that would have sold the radiation before it got to us joel finish taking this blanket for me will it sure and when you're finished you'll have to wash your hands thoroughly got a little breeze just now a nice cool breeze of radioactive mist now folks watch while i give a demonstration of how to defend yourself against lingering radioactivity first you remove all the clothing you think might be contaminated then you scrub every part of you that you think might be contaminated once twice and then you think you've got a bad bad i don't think so son but if i have i'm not gonna have a bad for very long that's the whole idea of this scrubbing if you get a little radiation don't let it stay with you long enough for it to build up its dirty work because that's one way radiation can make you sick two human stays with you long it enough do almost as much damage over a long period of time as one big dose all at once if you're radioactive right now daddy does that mean that we can catch it from you no meg i've got it all to myself do you think we'll be all right tim we've taken every precaution to lock that radiation out already if it doesn't get to you right away it starts to die it may linger for a while but it does die and we can wait it out we've got all the time in the world this man knows that his best defense against lingering radioactivity is patience calm patience in a water burst the odds are with the man who stays put but what about the h bomb the hydrogen bomb though it might be one thousand times more powerful than the atom bomb would only cause damage over a radius ten times as great and the damage would be similar in kind hence the principles of self-defense against the h-bomb would not change from those of the a-bomb they would become more vital some of the scenes you have just seen have deliberately been made slower in order to bring home to you what pre-con under ideal circumstances when the alert is sounded of course you might not have time to do all of these things most important is to take cover in the basement the center of a building or in a doorway if you're in the street meanwhile remember that civilian defense is everybody's business all over the world today powerful forces are at work for the preservation of international peace it is the hope of civilization that the harnessed power of the atom will work for the good of mankind so uh it's all spicy but uh pretty great uh rko so it has some known uh folks and it was also shown in theaters um i think someone mentioned edith head did the costuming which wasn't too much um just a lot of people just wearing regular clothes but um yeah this is similar to a lot of films a lot of civil defense films that came out this one was not actually made by the department of civil defense this was actually made by rko uh for general i'm sure they consulted with civil defense folks but yeah um i seem to be on a a bit of a safety kick today uh but the last two films all deal with being sheltered in the house and i know you guys are getting a little claustrophobic so let's bust out let's get out here's motorcycle safety and courtesy and traffic [Music] one of the joys of motorcycle riding is the open road one of the realities is the shared road furthermore it must be shared with drivers who have more protective shielding and to drive multi-wheeled vehicles that are larger heavier and more easily visible the motorcycle the machine itself is neither safe nor dangerous but what the rider does with it can make it more one or the other almost anybody can learn to operate the machine a poor rider can travel along a straight smooth deserted road almost as well as a skilled operator beyond these ideal and rare circumstances the comparison ends anybody can be a reckless and unsafe operator for as long as he or she survives at first while we're operating out in the field and operating our motorcycles slowly we want to use only the rear brake which operates by this pedal which is operated with the right foot later after we gain a little more speed we'll operate our front brake and it is operated by the hand up here on the handlebar we first operate the foot brake and follow very quickly with a handbrake which to be a safe motorcyclist requires not only more intelligence and more intelligent courtesy but also more genuine writing skills skill begins with knowing the machine the beginner should seek the help of his vehicle dealer or of a qualified instructor in learning the controls of a particular model with the machine on its stanchion he can learn how to start it and the use of the choke he must also learn to coordinate the clutch level and the gear shift become accustomed to the use of the foot lever for the rear wheel brake and the hand lever for the front wheel brake the next step is practice practice until every move can be made instantly accurately and almost automatically on the practice field the cyclist may have time to think about how to drop back into lower gear or how to apply the brakes but later in traffic there may be no time at all initial training should be in an open area and at slow speed not only is slow speed safer but it helps instill confidence in keeping the feet up and maintaining posture a typical practice area such as this high school facility give students a chance to practice and demonstrate their developing skills control of the power cycle speed leaning into turns maintaining course and maneuverability and the ability to maintain a straight line while breaking and to stop at a given point at all stop signs the motorcyclist should come to a complete stop in the foot down position some states require a demonstration of such abilities as well as a knowledge of traffic regulations before issuing an operator's license all hand signals are made with the left arm the three signals are slowing down or stopping left turn right turn if the state requires use of turn signals these must be installed and used along with the basic skills the new rider should be acquiring the defensive attitude the defensive attitude is the habit of expecting the unexpected or anticipating problems before they arrive it begins with the wearing of protective gear and clothing these include a high impact helmet cushioned inside for comfort and protection while riding it is always worn with the chin strap fastened next goggles or face shield of shatterproof material regular corrective glasses or sunglasses do not offer adequate protection wind whipping around them can cause blinding tears a face down spill the shields offer fullest protection clothing includes long sleeve jackets to protect the arms gloves for the hands long trousers and boots to protect legs and ankles riding without face and eye protection would be like driving a car without that windshield in front fine until another vehicle kicks up dirt or stone and suddenly we know another reason why that windshield and that face shield are there let the shield take the strike not the face or those irreplaceable eyes machines designed for the road are not intended for the rougher climbs and maneuvers for which the knobby tired off-trail machines are built but the road rider should become familiar with the handling of his machine on various surfaces such as sand gravel and dirt [Music] by the time the cyclist progresses to in-traffic riding the combination of skill and defensive attitude should be ingrained in him by practice he will take the best position in the traffic lane generally toward the left in the line followed by the left wheels of automobiles the center is avoided because it's likely to contain slick spots left by the oil that drips from cars the extreme right is generally too close to parked cars furthermore some thoughtless motorists may be tempted to try to squeeze by [Music] this is a trap to be avoided a defensive cyclist should always leave himself a way out the defensive rider always lets the motorist know he is there he would be wise to think of himself as partially invisible to many motorists he is to illustrate a truck driver approaches an intersection he's accustomed to looking for large vehicles but as he stops notice a corner post is enough to block a motorcycle completely from view the driver doesn't see him and pulls out into a collision course with the cyclist there are also blind spots behind a car before attempting to pass the defensive cyclist will make sure he is seen in the motorist rear-view mirror or he may be surprised by a sudden left turn among car drivers and motorcyclists alike are a careless few who are a danger to themselves and to others among cyclists they are the ones who use their machines to vent their aggression in traffic those who are so hungry for attention they make every ride an ego trip and those who lack the common sense to recognize hazards until it is too late nothing does more harm to the image of motorcyclists than the ear blasting noise of the show-off to cut off or bypass the muffler of a modern machine does not improve its performance it only violates the law and makes enemies leave the muffler intact for the sake of both courtesy and the sport of motorcycling the better rider is distinguished by courtesy it is always the self-confident person who is considerate of others the writer who knows he is skilled confines his demonstrations to appropriate places [Music] [Music] in traffic he applies those skills to the cause of safety the defensive rider always signals his moves well in advance to this extent he controls the actions of the vehicles behind him to make sure they were watching he checks in his mirror before making his move while waiting to make a left turn a slight turning of the front wheel gives a further signal of intent close following is always dangerous not only is stopping time decreased but truck tires may throw back stones and other materials also vision is limited and the cyclist may not be able to see dips or chuck holes in the road ahead usually the legal following distance in traffic is at least one car length for each 10 miles per hour of speed we say at least because even this common rule of thumb is not foolproof it assumes that in the process of stopping the vehicle ahead will also move further forward if it had stopped instantly as in a collision the spacing might not have sufficed some drivers have the notion that if you double the speed you merely double the distance required for stopping but this is not true actually when the speed is doubled the kinetic energy of the vehicle is multiplied four times this means that if a machine going 10 miles per hour strikes a wall with an impact of say 1 000 foot pounds at 20 miles per hour it will hit with an impact of 4 000 foot pounds put another way if at ten miles an hour the operator has one thousand foot pounds of energy to bring to a halt at double that speed he will have four thousand foot pounds to hog and it will require approximately four times the distance in normal situations by applying both back and front brakes gradually the rider keeps straight line control using an incline plane for momentum notice how the rolling front and rear wheels of this skate maintain their position but lock the wheels so they slide and momentum forces the skate along in any position locked wheels on a motorcycle can do the same thing hard braking and a sideways slide coming down this hill could be very unpleasant [Music] the time to slow or gear down is before the cycle starts the descent on a slippery street even light breaking will often cause a machine to slide a sensible rider avoids the necessity of braking by going slow on wet pavement and by watching a head and slowing down before a slick spot is reached [Music] if a bump chuck hole or other road fault is unavoidable it should be met head on with a firm grip on the handlebars [Music] slippery tracks can be treacherous and should be intersected as near perpendicular as possible crossing with the flat of the tire [Music] the knowledgeable rider will always slow down before taking a curve to be in the curve at proper speed the reason a rider leans in the direction he is turning is to offset the centrifugal effect this is the action that pushes a rotating body toward the outside of a circle notice that at slow speed the object remains within the marked circle but when speed is increased the object is forced outside the boundary by the same principle a rider taking a curve at safe speed remains on his side of the yellow line taking the curve too fast centrifugal force carries him over the line and into the lane of oncoming traffic we have seen that a locked wheel will slide in any direction on a curve the machine tends to continue in a straight line in this direction if brakes are applied and traction lost here the machine will slide into the oncoming lane the rule is slow down early do not break on the curve [Music] the rules for a motorcycle in passing are the same as for automobiles the operator signals his intent pulls completely into the passing lane and make sure he has enough lead before pulling back in the defensive rider regards every intersection as a potential danger area he always assumes the drivers around him will be careless and he must be on the alert a turn signal may mean an approaching car will turn or it may mean the signal was left on carelessly he waits to know for sure he still keeps the controls under hand and foot ready for instant action in case someone does the unexpected good defensive riders travel within a protective safety barrier made up of their own awareness and alertness to what is going on around them the cyclist looks for traffic signals several cars ahead [Music] a ball rolling into the street is enough to warn him to slow down so nothing surprises him he avoids riding close to a line of parked cars too many possibilities for trouble [Music] traveling in pairs experienced riders are cautious about riding side by side in this manner what is wrong with it a car swerving into their lane may force the inside rider to the outside and there is nowhere for the inside rider to turn defensive riders always leave themselves a way out [Music] in pairs they travel in this manner each in control of his own space when riding double the passenger needs the same protective clothing as the operator the passenger is advised to keep a firm hold on the handles or buddy strap although a firm hold on the operator also has its pleasant aspects passengers should be advised to keep both feet on the pegs at all times and to lean only in the same direction as the operator a parked motorcycle is entitled to a whole parking space but why not make it apparent many motorists have had the experience of turning into a seemingly vacant space to discover it is not vacant hopefully in time to stop when correctly parked the motorcycle can readily be seen maintenance always important is doubly so for night riding the common sense rider is on the lookout for worn tires frayed cables or brakes that need adjusting he keeps his engine properly tuned and makes regular inspections of his electrical system including front and rear lights as a rule of thumb the high beam of the headlight should drop about two inches in 25 feet if too high or low it will not light the road surface properly the watch words for night riding are see and be seen light-colored clothing especially helmet and jacket make the rider more visible clothing and helmets are available with highly reflective materials built in reflective tape is another added touch of visibility it should always be on the helmet and may be added to the backs of the jacket and machine experienced riders often apply reflective tape to the backs of their gloves a help in making arm signals more visible to following vehicles the skillful knight rider always rides within the limits of visibility that means at a reduced speed that enables him to stop within the distance illuminated by his light beam because if the light suddenly catches something that's all the distance he has the cyclist who follows a car or truck too closely may disappear from the view of a motorist behind him to this driver the lights blend and all appear to belong to one larger vehicle so he provides no margin for the safety of the unseen motorcycles special care must be taken in coming out of a driveway or side street the cyclist can never assume that he has been seen the cyclist must know the road surface ahead of him and glare like any momentary blindness is a special hazard if there are smudges or cracks in goggles or a face shield oncoming lights play havoc with vision glasses and face shields need to be kept clear and clean the cyclist should avoid direct eye contact with the bright lights slow down and look toward the right side of the road until the glaring light is passed compressed in this space of time there seems a great deal to remember but most of it is common sense in essence safe motorcycling boils down to those three essentials skill defensive attitude and courtesy in brief learn to handle the controls easily and quickly maintain a surrounding circle of safety by always expecting the unexpected anticipate what is ahead and adjust speed accordingly motorcycling is for pleasure practicing safety and courtesy makes it more pleasant for everybody such exciting music great outro music um yeah 1973 was that what that was that was really great love it totally love it um lots of great early harley-davidson's etc um my dad had a motorcycle for a brief period of time i don't know why it magically appeared and why it magically disappeared disease this contest features some of the most fearsome and ruthless combatants this reporter has ever observed let's go down to the field now to meet some of them close up first an old-time killer who's making an alarming comeback the dreaded diphtheria ah my name is diphtheria and i can be quite near to you [Music] i'll make you sick as you can be and take your breath away from you your only defense is to immunize and if you don't [Music] i'll materialize next the dangerous and mainly misunderstood mumps my name is mumps and i'll put you in the dumps i'll make you swell till you wish you could yell then i'll get you with my side effects until your body is a wreck so unless you realize that you should be immunized i'll get you because i'm mumps teeming with mumps also mainly misunderstood to form a dangerous one-two punch is measles here i'll cover you in a rash of fear with itchy red spots from toe to ear anyone can catch me do you hear or over your body has spread instead of playing you'll be in bed in the beginning i can easily be caught so get immunized and don't give me a thought another member of this club who was once taken lightly but has shown awesome power is measles cuts oh rubella they call me you're um german measles that puts you in bed i'm ugly small and scratchy and sore catching me as a big three-day bore i'm dangerous before you're even alive with birth defects you could arrive a vaccine will keep you safe from harm if you get immunized there's no need for alarm one of the most catching members of this aggregation is the seldom thought of but extremely dangerous whooping cough i am catch me and you're really in a jam i'll make you pop all day and night i'll make you so sick you'll never feel right to other children my disease can spread so get immunized and you'll never dread one of the most prevalent and gritty diseases who always seems to be around anything sharp and dirty is this sneaky disgusting tedness they call me tetanus the terrible my muscle spasms are unbearable i'll get you when you have cuts in your skin with germs from dust and dirt that's how i begin i'll make your head ache make it hard for you to fight if left untreated i'll make all your muscles you'll never have to get me that's for sure if you get immunized you'll have the cure the comeback kid on this squad is polio anyone who can remember what this terror was like we'll be sure to get his shots hollios the name and cripplings my game i was once divorced until the doctors gave me a fall so if you don't want to greet me see me or meet me there's only one way to be certain get immunized and you won't be hurting well there you have it a dangerous and gruesome group to be sure now here they come down to the field there goes diphtheria the mysterious and mumps just got his lunch now measles is squizzy and rubella fella whoops there goes whooping cough and tetanus is on it's frantic bam polio is still up oh but now he's great polio is only well there you have it another victory for immunization the disease gang a dangerous and gruesome group to be sure but the one thing we all have to remember as terrifying as these diseases are you won't have to face any of them if you get immunized this is how he babbles signing off from the ama immunization bowl so i like at the end the uh the fireworks the little sparklers that are flying over the i don't know it's a fun film i enjoy it um and i know some of you tuned in friday uh friday night to talk listen to the health expert or the um infectious diseases expert that we had on um discussing these films um but uh yeah i like that because it captures what was happening you know back when everybody knew who howard cosell was what everybody knew who peter laurie was or at least kind of had a rough idea where it came from um i don't know was there charles nelson riley in there there was definitely a kind of a pirate voice and then some people said artie johnson for the german and certainly he was a good he did a good german thing also the other guy guy who was always doing a german accent um he was in the producers um what is his name suddenly can't i'm spacing on it um character actor kenneth mars kenneth mars was always doing a german uh accent uh in almost all of his characters i have a prell commercial where he's not but he's just speaking normal
