[Music] is there a special place where a person can look to find verbs of course in sentences and is there a special way to recognize verbs that's what this film is about we know that a complete sentence has two main parts the complete subject which tells what the sentence is about and the complete predicate which tells something about the subject now let's meet joe and nancy and nancy's dog princess and now let's look for complete subjects and predicates in sentences let's try a sentence joe showed his skill as a driver this sentence is about joe so that word is the complete subject the rest of the sentence tells something about the subject joe so the words showed his skill as a driver are the complete predicate complete predicate and complete subject let's try another sentence joe's car developed engine trouble [Applause] what is the sentence about so this is the complete subject and what is it that tells us something about the complete subject so this is the complete predicate and together we have a sentence finding the complete subject and predicate in a sentence is the first step in learning to recognize verbs nancy enjoys the game of croquet the ball hit princes on the nose it's easy to separate the words of this sentence into the complete subject and predicate now while the predicate as a whole tells us something in general about the subject one word in the predicate tells us something in particular about the subject hit tells us what the ball did it tells us about an action of the subject of the sentence let's look at another sentence princess return the ball in the predicate of this sentence a word that tells us about an action of the subject is returned nancy smiled at her pet's playfulness is there a word in this sentence that tells us about an action of the subject yes so in each of these three sentences there has been a word in the complete predicate which told what the subject of each sentence did involving an action hit returned smiled these words were used as verbs in these sentences looking for the words in the predicate that show some action by the subject is one way to recognize verbs or we might put it this way a verb is a word in the predicate that tells what the subject does let's use this definition to find the verbs in certain sentences about joe in his chemistry class joe held two beakers in his hands which word in the predicate tells what the subject did that's the verb he poured liquid from one beaker into the other where's the verb the mixture bubbled the verb joe placed the beaker on the table the second beaker was placed beside the first where is the verb in this sentence the second beaker is the complete subject is there a word in the complete predicate that tells what the subject did no but the two words was placed tell what was done to the subject what happened to the second beaker it was placed beside the first the word was is a helping word look at the two words was placed they are used as a verb in the sentence so now we must add to the chart we began before the statement that a verb is also a word that tells what is done to the subject when a verb tells what is done to a subject it is made of more than one word let's see more examples of this kind of verb an election is scheduled at school an election is the complete subject what is done to it it is scheduled so is scheduled is used as a verb in this sentence now as we change tenses we'll find that the helping words also change nancy has been nominated for room treasurer what is the complete subject and what is the verb in the complete predicate the election will be held today what is the verb nancy has not been elected what is the verb in this sentence is it has not been elected no not is not a part of this verb it is a word that changes the meaning of the verb the verb is has been elected from this example you can see that the parts of a verb do not always stand together in a sentence so far we've seen that a verb tells what the subject does or tells what is done to the subject but let's look at this sentence about princess princess is a pedigreed dog let's separate the complete subject from the complete predicate now in the complete predicate is there a word that either tells what the subject princess does or something that is done to the subject no but there is a verb here and the verb is the word is is does not indicate any kind of action then what sort of information does the word is give us about princess it tells us something about what is called the state of being of princess what is the state of being of princess princess is and the rest of the predicate tells us what princess is let's try another state of being verb princess seems gentle which word in the complete predicate indicates the subject's state of being seems is the verb in this sentence appearances are deceiving the subject is the word appearances what is the verb here r indicates state of being so now to our chart we can add a verb is a word that also indicates the state of being of the subject a verb in any sentence will do one of these three jobs so we can recognize the verbs in sentences by looking for those words which tell what the subject does tell what is done to the subject or indicate the state of being of the subject now let's test our knowledge we're at an amusement park with nancy and joe let's look for verbs the parachute rose slowly which does the verb rose tell what the complete subject did or what was done to it nancy and joe were carried to the top here what does the verb were carried tell about the complete subject nancy seem frightened does scene show action or state of being why is this place called an amusement park where is the verb in this sentence you can find it if you remember what a verb does by learning this definition you can learn to recognize and use verbs effectively hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show visually that uh that last film was uh i liked it it was the colors were so incredibly vivid um the fact that it's all semi-animated makes it not very interesting but there's there's this balance that i it's like wow it's so pretty i want to show it and it's like ah i don't want to show it um anyways uh that's kind of what i had within my reach i had some issues with my imac which i used to broadcast this daily streaming show it was just being incredibly sluggish and i rebooted it and then nothing worked and then i rebooted it nothing worked and i rebooted it nothing worked and i unplugged everything and rebooted it so we're here and up and running but uh that's uh i had to quickly kind of like pull things together and that's what i do is uh sometimes you know i put together themes of films that i have and sometimes it's just kind of a grab bag of like this oh this is interesting and oh i haven't seen this and oh this might so um that's kind of what the av geese lunchtime streaming show is all about where we watch 16 millimeter films and uh sometimes they're relevant sometimes they aren't uh inadvertently relevant happens a lot uh which i love uh the next film we're gonna watch is actually on the telecini um it is uh a space age film we are past the space age believe it or not when someone talks about space age technology they're talking about something that was 60 years ago so now i i don't even know if we're information age now or even past that i don't know what age we are in um so anyways here is the balance of life and the space age it's really kind of a fascinating film i've seen it before but it's i i enjoy it here we go [Music] [Music] what do men and animals need to stay alive one important need is oxygen there is oxygen in the air we breathe food is another need animals and men get food from plants or they may get food from other animals which in turn eat plants a third basic need is water water food and oxygen these are the things men and animals need in order to live all of them are generously supplied us by the earth and the atmosphere around it but now man has found a way to leave here astronauts journey into space away from the earth his natural home an astronaut will not find the things he needs to live to keep alive in space he must take with him all of the oxygen food and water his body will require and the length of his journey will be limited by the amount of these necessities his spaceship will carry but if man is to explore the distant planets if he is to build a base on the moon he will need much larger supplies of oxygen food and water than he can hope to carry from the earth is there any way that life necessities can be supplied to an astronaut for a space journey lasting several months or perhaps years we may find an answer if we understand how these basic necessities are provided on earth let's examine one small part of the earth's surface a freshwater pond the fish that live in the pond like other animals must have food water and oxygen in order to stay alive they find these necessities in the pond an important source of food for these fish are the green plants that live in the [Music] water [Music] plants also produce oxygen in bright sunlight bubbles of oxygen can be seen on their leaves or rising from them the brighter the light the more oxygen they produce [Music] light is needed by plants plants also need a gas called carbon dioxide in the pond plants can get carbon dioxide from the fish fish take in the oxygen given off by the plant their gills separate the oxygen from the water and as the fish use the oxygen they give off carbon dioxide the plants in turn use the carbon dioxide to grow forming more oxygen and more food for the fish so the process is repeated indefinitely a kind of circle or cycle in which plant supports animal and animals supports plants such a community of living things each depending upon the other is called a balanced system we too are a part of a balanced system all the living things on earth form a great and complex balanced system animals give off carbon dioxide green plants use carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and many kinds of food on earth plants and animals depend upon each other they support each other just as do the fish and the plants in the pond if we take a fish out of its pond can we keep it alive we can as long as we give it the things it needs to live water oxygen and food as these are used up we can of course add more but can we instead create in the tank a balanced system that will work like the one in the pond green plants will grow in the tank given enough light they will supply the fish with food as the fish takes in oxygen it gives off carbon dioxide which the plants need to continue growing as the plants use the carbon dioxide they release oxygen needed by the fish with the proper balance between plants and animals the tank can even be closed up nothing more need be added plants and fish will supply for each other all the basic needs of life we have made a small balanced system can a balanced system be created to keep a man alive inside a spacecraft scientists in this laboratory believe it can they are experimenting with a water plant called chlorella florella plants are so tiny they can be seen only as a green color in the water if the water is removed a green paste remains oxygen bubbles from it if we examine a bit of this paste under a microscope we can see that it is made of tiny individual chlorella plants millions of these can live in a test tube like all green plants they require light in order to grow in a spaceship or on a moon base chlorella could be grown in tremendous numbers since they are green plants they need carbon dioxide they give off oxygen men need oxygen they breathe out carbon dioxide by placing a man in a sealed chamber scientists can find out the amount of chlorella needed to supply enough oxygen to keep the man alive and they can find out whether the man breathes out enough carbon dioxide to keep the plants alive scientists have also found that chlorella can be made into a nourishing food they have made chlorella flower from this several kinds of food have been prepared tests have shown that chlorella muffins are not only helpful but good tasting as well so by using a plant like florella it may be possible to create a balanced system that will keep an astronaut alive in its space for long periods of time just as the fish can stay alive in its sealed aquarium so the further exploration of space depends in part upon our understanding of life on earth and the great balanced system of which we are a part [Music] and upon which all life depends [Music] i could see some of you were claiming um that this was uh basically not delivering what you expected based on the title um that it was basically a biology film with some nasa footage cut in uh and that's that's true i gotta say it's true um trying to capitalize a little bit on the interest young people's interest in the space program um but honestly you know it's talking about those the same issues i certainly have other films that kind of address the same thing but it's almost all space footage test footage uh surviving in space is one it's an encyclopedia britannica film um but and also somebody in the the uh comments mentioned biosphere 2. there was a great film that came out documentary about it that came out uh i think in the fall summer last year and uh we digitized like almost all of it like we digitized all the the footage of the biosphere 2 project um video and film from when they back in the day um fascinating film really quite something and it's it's trying to address the same issues which is can you create a sustainable environment um you know with creating some sort of bio different types of bio uh biomes uh so that your cons it's like a terrarium but you have humans in it and uh i won't spoil it but i will say the answer is no you can't not on earth not using the technology they use but um there's a lot more to it there's really it's fascinating and the personalities are kind of interesting and i would say that this was part of our digitizing a bunch of cult stuff because they were cultish uh the people in the group um biospherians but it wasn't a negative cult experience it was it was kind of interesting so uh i do recommend it i can't remember where you can see it now but it's uh and it's not the biodome it's not biodome um it's called spaceship earth um poly shore now one day i'll tell you my probably short story okay where are we at um i should say thanks uh some people after hours donated coffee uh yesterday and that was much appreciated coffee is a very sacred uh element here at uv geeks it helps percolate our nervous systems so that we can deal with the fact that a computer won't boot properly over and over and over again um and not freak out um let's see next this is the title is clipped it's called dog show and i'm not quite sure who made it um but it seems to be a lot of little news items about related to dogs so here's dog show now his troubles really begin for he's eight big family man with many responsibilities but mothers don't make cuts all by herself so a cunning little nurse willingly helps truly a dog's life from now on but she takes it develop big appetites so again necessity becomes the mother of invention don't crowd for there's plenty for all and plenty waiting come and get it the line for ice and they don't have to be coaxed even a little bit and so mother gets a deserved rest [Music] adult a la canine and what a meal [Music] at dinner time comes news time with dreams perhaps about sleeping jumping and more dinner tomorrow [Music] these are funny little fellows as curious as you are to know what it's all about but in summer heat or winter chill babies arrive just the same keen for lots of food crisp air plenty of vigorous exercise little pups will soon be living up to their name huskies that's what they are [Music] it's mush mush mush over the windswept frozen waste of the arctic speedy dog teams the never failing transportation for northern lands of long winters and deep snow [Music] a dog is the children's best protector a big strong newfoundland or just a little spaniel the dog is truly man's best friend always on the watch for trouble true companions faithful guardians when he sleeps it's with one eye open always on guard where is there a lad who doesn't love a dog where is there a dog that doesn't love a lad and i scream too share and share alike well for a little while anyway then complete understanding between a good boy and an ever faithful pal fast-moving automobiles are always a danger to dogs on the highway a tragic accident a grim lesson to puppies that run away and to their owners too [Music] see that this doesn't happen to your dog in the heavy traffic of today it's the end of thousands every year but save your tears it isn't as bad as it looks this time it's a trained dog that lies motionless until his master says up but he teaches an important lesson all dogs cannot boast of private swimming pools it's a swan dive canine style a double header with the pup showing top form but the best part seems to be getting out [Music] the blue bloods of darkness the show of shows here the best in the world parade for the highest kennel club award center standard attention while bedlington's look sheepy as the judges note their points and pick the winner [Music] french poodles the fanciest dogs in the show although years ago they were considered to be high in the retriever class now they get all trimmed up and are they proud a study in streamlined beauty the great dane a head that denotes kindliness but determination then some low boys that are always friendly the dash one no streamlining here but prize winners everyone wait a minute you're not true yet [Music] the small terriers are important a study in black and white the noble shaggy shepherd a non-beauty contest of english bulldogs all groomed up and ready to look ferocious why don't they seem fierce really though they're one of the kindliest dogs known but you'd better treat them kindly too [Music] the aristocracy of dogdoms the russian wolfhound from the court of bazaar dogs of all breeds all colors all sizes ugly dogs pretty dogs and of course a feature of every show the largest and the smallest it's hard to believe that they belong to the same family [Music] now for a real dog show a wagon full of star performers ready to do odd tricks everyone raring to go lineup and inspection come first all up and steady attention please get [Music] okay introducing the now you see me now you don't dog yes he's it and he's playing hide and seek all by himself now light-footed admiral daddy boy for there's many a slip but he seems to know his steps [Music] next happy ascends without the help of wires ride on up to the top to win a great big hug maybe that's why he doesn't mind the trip now for slip all a whirlwind on four legs turning with timed action and absolute balance to land on his feet he's a wire-haired to be proud of [Music] the retriever is the sportsman's dog in action he stands at rigid attention until given the signal to go soon he's on his way back with the prize the retriever has been caught to hold the bird tenderly and to fetch it without harming a feather [Music] but the dog of all dogs for sport is the house here is a pack of the finest in any land gathered around the gate the shrill bugle sounds across the countryside and off they go over hill and rolling dale with the eager riders following behind the real hunt drills begin as they near the quarry these hunters are not out to kill they seek only to stalk their game and bring it back safely and unharmed a beautiful creature of the wood swimming to be free but the well-trained dogs have the scent and they are hot in pursuit soon he is surrounded there is no escape thus a day of regal sport such as the gentry has enjoyed since the middle ages when day is done dogs like their masters and like good people say prayers before [Music] reaching and then it just ends um obviously this film was shown a lot i got this from buffalo public schools um and so the title was shredded probably which is why i didn't exist and the end was also probably shredded because someone tried to rewind it through um a projector and uh i did some research on the title and the title was correct a lot of times you can't really trust what somebody has called a film if there's no title on it uh but this looked like this was part of a sports parade which was castle films would periodically do sports parades about football baseball various sports action sports stunts and this was all about dogs and someone uh ucla attributed to being roughly released in 1945. so there you go um so castle eugene castle or someone for his company probably took newsreel footage and smooshed it all together and released this so there it goes uh i have not seen this next film it says king of the hill it's obviously not the uh cartoon um that was on fox um hank hill um i should say that they were one of my first uh stock footage clients for uh there's an easter egg on the first volume of their dvd uh where they license mowing lesson for charlie um so you you hit something and it shows you how to mow your lawn all right uh so here we go this is king of the hill enjoy there are so many perfect forms from the one end of nature there are so many shapes of life sharing each other's differences so many ways to grow tall in the same sunlight ah wow this is a place of many tiny seeds of different kinds colors which together have grown to form the forest this is the unspoiled planet earth to which with all our wild hearts we long to return ourselves the seed [Music] the cornfield is very unlike the forest it's too simple each stalk is like every other stalk anything different is weeded out a cornfield can belong only to a man like me oh as a man-child i came into the world with a choice i could grow up like the forest or the cornfield i am king of the hill wherever i am whatever i do there is only a me never a you or if there's a you who exists at all you only exist to slide down and fall then i the king will move in for the kill and thrust you down from the top of my hill so so [Music] [Music] [Music] being the only one on top of the hill is not always fun not always and one day searching for my true face i was confronted by my own [Music] shadow [Music] so [Music] so i'll be king in a world of faces in which it's fun to play they're with me when i want them through every lonely day and when i make a face at one the face comes back in kind because no matter what its shape the face is always mine with this view of myself i spun into the world as the hub of my own wheel of fort why are there other molds of men like crabgrass and the lawn why other colors races creeds who'd put me in the wrong because if you're seeking out a model of what you ought to be then polish up your glasses and take a look at me so i was king of the hill reigning over a multitude of scarecrow subjects all made in my own image oh [Music] all right [Music] being the only one is not always fun not always you [Music] [Music] hmm [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] finally i learned that every man child must grow up to see his true face reflected in the many faces of [Music] mankind so i came to realize that we're not a one crop humanity after all rather we're the sons of different tribes celebrating the one life together each doing his own step to one overall rhythm [Music] can it work after so many centuries of bitter memories of each other can we really learn to share the same land and sing the same tune each in his own voice can it will it work or do too many of us still want to be king of the hill i am king of the hill wherever i am whatever i do there is only a me never a you or if there's you who exists at all you only exist to slide down and paul and i the king will move in for the kill and thrust you down from the top of my i'm so excited um that film was made by ralph forsberg and uh somebody on uh facebook uh linda hard heartbarker i apologize if i don't pronounce your name correctly she's she sums up ralph forsberg films uh very well which is so many questions and uh let's see nightmares will come from this i i know that is hallmark ralph forsberg um ralph uh was a christian filmmaker although he uh when i actually asked him said he was more of a spiritual filmmaker but he ended up making a lot of uh educational films for lutherans and for protestant churches i've shown multiple uh films that he's made here on the on the lunchtime streaming show um stalked which is about a man who goes returns to his home country of um the netherlands goes to amsterdam and it's stalked by a dutch jesus and it's pretty horrifying uh parable which was made for the world's fair 1964 world's fair and was condemned by almost everybody as being heretical because it supposedly showed jesus as a clown and people just didn't like that i also showed ark which is another film which uh was borrowed very liberally for the film silent running and ralph actually sued them and um wow this uh uh he had he's made a lot of films and i kind of would was always looking to find in my collection for specific films that he did and this one just out of the blue and it's the thing is it's the title is so generic there are other films that are educational films that are nameless um and so this is why we watch films uh because we don't know what's in them and this one of course leaves more questions but it answers it proposes uh some interesting ideas but doesn't really it's it's kind of open air there's some odd uh imagery in this um all this is ralph forsberg and uh he also made help make the film late great planet earth which really traumatized me as a child i saw it as a child and was convinced the world was coming to an end and had nightmares for months i had to sleep in my parents room the night that i saw it it freaked me out so when i had an opportunity thanks to mark quigley at ucla to meet ralph forsberg at his home in california i jumped on the chain at the chance because this was an opportunity for me to reconcile this this trauma this psychic trauma in my head and talk with him and the thing what was interesting is that you know in collecting these educational films i discovered that he had made these other films that were really odd and i was like this is really crazy so i went because they were doing a retrospect of ralph's films at a local cinema and so i got to spend the afternoon with him thanks to mark and a very kind man didn't answer all my questions to my uh satisfaction but um it was it was good to see him you know it was a way to kind of for me to kind of process what i had gone through when i was when i was a child um and that's what it's all about right meeting your demons and conquering them or at least shaking their hands uh warmly so yeah that's uh so again this is why we why i dragged this giant piece of equipment from the archive to my home basement is so that we can pull films from the archive and then watch them and so watch things i've never seen before and make new discoveries um and so i'm a little giddy uh it could be because ned gave me some coffee so thank you ned for the coffee um if you guys liked what you saw today uh or at
