[Music] [Music] so [Music] do [Music] do [Music] do [Music] [Music] hello welcome i'm skip alzheimer and this is our 80 geeks lunchtime streaming show uh that was a film strip that i just showed um and i left the music on because it's great music and we're just gonna see what youtube does with it um it's uh a fairly obscure organist but i don't know we'll see what happens um as long as we don't get shut down uh so um we show old 16 millimeter films here old educational films yesterday we have the found footage festival guys and uh they're a lot of fun they uh collect video and they certainly uh it was great um that joe had handy the um song it's uh i'm a super duper pooper from it's potty time because that's one of the early videotapes that i collected before i started really collecting film so um if you didn't see that you can go back on youtube or facebook it's archived so a lot of fun there uh but we're gonna return back to our watching old sixteen millimeter films and i've got one uh signed up here or lined up here uh you can see on our telecity this is uh from the series inside out which was a uh 70s tv show that was on public television and um was also distributed to schools and what i like about these films is they deal a lot with the emotional aspect of things and uh so this is a sense of joy so enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] i love to take my time and discover things for myself don't you there's so much to see to taste touch smell and hear in this world where have you been [Music] this morning my sister and i were supposed to go to the beach i was lying on the grass watching the cars and people go by really having a good time by myself my sister came off of the house in a hurry as usual she wanted to start for the beach right away it's gonna be a special day [Music] it's a wonderful day to explore and your play of joy your sense of joy [Music] hello okay go ahead good try good practice oh oh no i want to go to the beach oh you always want to do what you want to do let's go see the puppy you could go see the puppy but i'm going on to the beach yes okay come on come on [Music] so [Music] [Music] oh you have to go now yes come on shane oh boy back on the train with you oh boy did you have a good time yeah where you going to the beach what's your name chuck now this is shane come by come on tell me goodbye goodbye [Music] popcorn crackerjacks [Music] okay thank you very much [Music] [Music] do [Music] so [Music] summertime many lands did [Music] and kick them around take a sight slowly there's a lot to be found doesn't really matter where you are summertime [Music] [Music] i dreamed last time that you [Music] i never thought i would see you again [Music] [Music] the [Music] memories [Music] [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign uh wow where have you been you've been looking out [Music] what do you think had i really missed all the fun long journeys inside out is a series of programs and related materials developed and supported by 32 educational agencies in the united states and canada with additional support from exxon corporation this program was produced by wviz tv cleveland ohio under the supervision of nit national instructional television so some of you echoed this in the comments uh and i must agree that was gloriously nostalgic of another time and and not just you know pre-pandemic but like to be that age to to be able to just have the time and the joy um it's really that was something it was a nice little boost for me it was a little bittersweet but really it's just like oh that's what it's all about right there uh pie hanging out on the beach going to the park you know just the the little things um that kind of took for granted that i'm looking forward to taking advantage again at some point so uh thank you for that uh and i don't know that was uh made by a cleveland tv station i don't know if it was actually shot in cleveland i was trying to identify like the landmarks there was that big spire thing in one of the parks near the fountain the kid was uh kind of leaning back on the grass um i was trying to see if that was something i might do a little bit of research on that while we're uh watching the next film and the next film is uh trying to encourage you uh to pursue a career in teaching this is part of that series that burton home series that came out in the 40s that was basically trying to say like okay you're out of school now what do you want to do so here's teaching your life this is an age of miracles an era of electronic and atomic energy of symphonies heard simultaneously in 10 million homes of giant air transports that bring continents closer together of life itself restored by modern medicine behind all achievements stands the work of men and women whose accomplishments seldom make headlines these are the teachers whose job it has ever been to aid youth in acquiring knowledge skills and understandings so that they may better serve society and live more happily teaching is a profession of great trust and responsibility for education is the lifeblood of our democracy the very foundation of our way of life today the teaching profession is the largest of all professions it is a profession of service to all mankind a calling that offers rewards that can never be calculated except in terms of human progress and personal satisfaction to each new citizen the first day of school is the beginning of a new way of life and to the teacher it is equally important for upon the professional educator rests the responsibility of helping each child find his place in the world to be successful a teacher must like children and enjoy working with people she must have a pleasing personality fairness tact and a sense of humor for those who qualify teaching presents many attractive features continued contact with young people helps maintain a youthfulness of viewpoint and constant study keeps one mentally alert an active part in the social life of the community is a pleasant aspect of teaching long summer vacations offer splendid opportunities for relaxation travel or further study some teachers spend their summers in creative work or take positions in another field thus adding to their earnings they may work as counselors at summer camps acquiring further understanding of human nature invaluable in teaching it is the unusual amount of economic security offered by this profession that appeals to many although salaries are not large they are relatively certain and regular ten-year laws protect teachers against unemployment and in some states assure a life job unless the teacher is proved unfit in other states the teacher is protected by a contract which insures the job for a specific length of time retirement pensions are also provided by many states and cities educational requirements for teaching vary from state to state and often in each district about two-thirds of our cities now require a college degree for their elementary teachers in other cities two or three years of college work is necessary most high schools require a bachelor's degree and some stipulate five years of college or a master's degree but in every case the teacher must have a certificate a license to teach generally these are issued for a specified period of time renewable and expiration but in some states permanent certificates may be obtained in planning for a career in teaching you must also consider the requirements of the various types of educational positions the kindergarten teacher must be able to help each child make social adjustments by working and playing with other children the elementary school teacher establishes work and study habits and introduces new materials high school teaching represents still another level of instruction many students will have no further formal education and must be prepared in high school to take their place as citizens in their community there is an increasing demand for teachers trained in special fields such as home economics specialization of this type makes it possible to utilize natural aptitudes and allows opportunities for self-expression physical education is another example of specialization opportunities exist for men and women who can coach students in various sports and games if you are gifted with a natural talent for art you will find enjoyment in helping other persons develop an appreciation for the cultural side of life those who specialize in music may conduct school orchestras or glee clubs in addition to regular class instruction journalism which often includes the publication of the school paper is still another interesting possibility for prospective teachers and unusual opportunities exist in counseling and guidance for those who specialize in this field each year almost 2 million young men and women must face the perplexing problem of choosing their life work trained counselors can do much to help them in choosing the jobs for which they are best suited other interests aptitudes and ability vocational education offers still other opportunities to teachers with practical work experience in a certain field other teachers are needed in schools for handicapped children the deaf the blind and the crippled must have instructors with specialized training adult education is another field for the teacher many schools offer opportunities for adults to improve their present positions prepare for new occupations and to broaden themselves culturally and socially in all colleges and universities instruction in many cases is highly specialized it is in this field that men rather than women predominate because they usually make teaching a life career men also hold most of the administrative offices in public school systems consequently more and more men are deciding that education offers them interesting opportunities for a career of service if you are thinking of becoming a teacher you should begin now to investigate every phase of this profession take stock of your own qualifications and decide for which field you think you are best suited then select the college or university that will give you the best training in your chosen field look into the opportunities for scholarships and special loan funds such assistance is widespread in the field of education and should not be overlooked and it is important to take advantage of opportunities to develop special abilities throughout your training years those able to handle extracurricular activities often have an advantage in applying for teaching positions later on in education perhaps more than in any other field constant personal improvement is a necessity you must be prepared to utilize modern teaching aids motion pictures and slide films bring a new world of knowledge into the classroom special educational radio programs broadcast coast to coast by networks and local stations have added new techniques to teaching but these aids are merely supplements they can never replace capable teachers the success of our whole system of education depends upon the capability of the men and women who serve as teachers for theirs is the responsibility of training and guiding the tens of millions of young people who must take their place as citizens of our country and our world the little red schoolhouse of yesterday has given way to the modern school of today but the dream of all real teachers will never change for theirs is a hope and a will to make this a better world for all people and all nations they will continue to inspire and teach to help make this shining future a reality today is never before there is a need for real teachers teaching is a profession that offers a challenge to all who would accept the trust and the privilege of being the custodians of the future if you would accept and fulfill such a trust teaching offers a real opportunity for your life work that was kind of a fascinating film um talking about the requirements of being a teacher and then also the transition from the little red schoolhouse or the rural school which doesn't really have many employees probably has a teacher um maybe a school board but not administration and then how they're talking about like more and more men are looking to become administrators in schools um it's so it's that transition that's taking place from the early 20th century to something that's more structured and formalized and also i think there was a i could be getting this wrong i think there was a effort during the depression to really uh step up the truancy laws uh because what was happening is that you had um a lot of people were out of work and you also had a lot of kids that were just kind of roaming around and some of those kids would be employed some of those kids were causing trouble um and so truancy was trying to get those kids off the streets during a time and out of work so that people if there were jobs they would be available to adults um i could be remembering that wrong but i feel like that was one of the big pushes to get kids and so you know some people talk about schools being prisons well they were kind of places to keep kids uh off the streets so they were prisons in a way all right got another uh film film film uh this one features a celebrity let's see if you can figure out who it is by reading the title card [Music] now everything you've always wanted to know about peas beans spaghetti orange juice milk and cheese but didn't know whom to ask is now printed right here on the label read the label set a better table that's a straight scoop you know today's consumers and of course that's all of us are faced with an enormous choice of foods and up until now we haven't had any way to tell what kind of nutrients things like vitamins proteins are in the foods we're buying we couldn't tell how to buy the best foods nutrition wise or money wise well now the u s food and drug administration and the us department of agriculture have come up with a way of labeling food that's really going to give us the kind of information we need it's really something and it just might change the food buying habits forever and it's right here on the labels of jars cans packages boxes of the food you buy and hundreds of america's food manufacturers were concerned about our nutrition problems are cooperating with the government in this nutrition labeling program so now every single one of us can eat better if we use nutrition labeling to plan better balanced meals we're going to show you how to do it the new labels will show you how many minerals vitamins fats carbohydrates proteins and our old friends calories are in the foods you eat read the label set a better table and the new nutrition information can solve a lot of problems for everybody now let's see how go on a low-calorie diet he says so help a girl to know if green beans have fewer calories than lima beans read the label set a better table we have got to start eating better balanced meals but where do i start good question read the label set a better table could i have some potato chips tonight potato chips well let's see you could have potato chips with your lunch how about potato chips and a hamburger and a nice glass of milk soda pop instead of milk milk growing kids need protein and calcium and the label says that milk cicada milk and soda pop milk see how firm you can be and smart if you read the nutrition label let's take a close look here at a typical nutrition label and see just how it helps to set a better table first of all that mysterious thing the serving packages used to say things like four generous servings or six average helpings whatever that meant now the labels take the mystery out of servings because they show both the size of the serving in a measurement we all know like a cup and the number of servings per can or box or whatever so you can figure out the cost per serving between brands or between different forms of the same food here's a familiar example let's say this box of instant rice costs 59 cents contains 10 servings this box of regular rice which contains the same number of servings but takes time to cook costs only 39 cents now the instant rice costs you six cents per serving but not so instant rice costs you only four cents per serving the regular rice saves you money but takes longer to prepare the instant rice costs more but is quicker the new label tells you what's in it for you but the choice is yours depends on what you got more up time or money now let's pick up a subject that everybody talks about but hardly anybody does anything about our old friend a calorie now the calorie is a measure of energy your body uses up a certain number of calories every day uh if you eat more than your body uses then the extra ones are stored up in the form of fat now the label on this box of spaghetti says that one cup of cooked spaghetti contains 210 calories you can cut down the number of calories by cutting down the serving size so a half a cup gives you about 105 calories or if you're a spaghetti freak you can increase the serving size to one and a half cups how many calories does that make 315 simple arithmetic for your seat by reading labels you can count the calories in the foods you buy and control just how many calories a day you're going to eat need a way to keep a girly figure unless of course you happen to be a boy okay what's next how's about we take a look at the next three items on the label protein carbohydrate [Music] and fat [Music] protein that's me your friend nutritionally i help build muscle keep them strong meat milk and fish is where i belong look and see you'll find me on your nutrition label i'll read the label and set a better table i'm carbohydrate your body's helped me now when energy's low i give you gold now i'm in cereals and starches and yummy treats find how much you're missing what you eat now before you cook now just take a look now at your nutrition label squeeze the label and said a better table [Music] hi folks i'm flat a rich food is where i'm at in creamy desserts in meat and cheese eat a lot of meat and you could get all peace [Music] a better table thanks boys i think we can use you the new labels tell you how much of these talented little guys are in the food you buy so by checking out the label you can see which foods give you protein carbohydrate fat and how much now this is how you can compare products take these two pot pies for example they're both eight ounces this one costs 29 cents this one costs 39 cents they look a lot alike until you read the label and then you'll find that this one has more protein less carbohydrates and fat and fewer calories so if you want more protein buy this one but if you're not worried about calories you get enough protein in the other foods go ahead and buy the lower price one speaking of a protein one of its best sources is meat but there are lots of other sources remember our slogan read the label set a better table you can actually get your recommended daily allowance of protein from foods that are less expensive foods like cheese fish beans chicken and hey peanuts peanuts yeah all are high in protein but are lower in cost and good sources of vitamin and minerals too and where do you think you can read about it that's right now protein carbohydrate fat all add up to calories and the label is going to tell you how many you get whether you want them or not they all add up to me who's me i'm calorie i give you energy but i make you fat if you eat a lot so check me on the label on the very top spot look for me the calorie on your nutrition label read the label and pet a better table dick what else can the label tell you well how about vitamins and minerals everybody needs them every day there's vitamin a vitamin c the three best known b complex vitamins thiamin riboflavin and niacin and everybody's favorite minerals calcium and iron the government has established recommended daily allowances for protein and important vitamins and minerals and the label tells you what percent of each of them you get per serving see right here recommended daily allowances now you don't have to wonder anymore if you're getting all the vitamins and minerals you need angela so here they are folks the stars of cans packages and jars vitamins and minerals i'm vitamin a i'm vitamin c together we can help [Music] on your toes feel it right i helped you see better at night i help your body build bones and skin your label tells you what roots we're in wait a a and vitamin c you'll find us easily on your nutrition label read the label and [Music] [Applause] [Music] are we each a part of vitamin d diamond riboflavin niacin good for your nerves good for your skin meat and grains are the foods look for us we're on your nutrition label you read the label and set a better table [Music] clams and beans [Music] now a lot of people are on special diets and they're going to find the new labels can make life a lot easier because many food manufacturers are now listing sodium content and some of them are listing cholesterol content as well so if you're on a low sodium low cholesterol diet be sure and check that label read the label set a better table everybody every day because you know people may be different but there's one thing that we all have in common that's the need for good nutritious food or good nutrition nutrition is the way our bodies take in and use food to stay strong and healthy and there's practically nothing more important than that so we'd better make sure that the food we eat is worth eating now of course that doesn't mean that we've got to cut out our favorite snacks but the thing is that eating right can be fun too what we have to do is be sure that we eat a variety of foods each day though many of us children active adults older people need slightly different amounts the whole family can eat together and they can eat well now especially thanks to the new nutrition labeling program from the u.s food and drug administration and the us department of agriculture so read the label set a better table if you'd like to know a little bit more about this labeling program why don't you ask down at the supermarket they'll know all about it or if you want to you can write to the food and drug administration at this address or write to the us department of agriculture at this address you can feed your family right even though the money's tied nutrition information boxes and cats helps you fill your pots and pans with tasty food [Music] [Music] this is dick van dyke for the food and drug administration reading the labels see you [Music] so back in 2003 i got an email from the girl that was in this film uh her name is angela and i asked her i said well she didn't have a copy of this and so she was um asking to see if she'd get a videotape of it and so i said yeah well in exchange for you telling me kind of how you did this uh she said i only acted professionally in conjunction with the show the film i auditioned for commercials and such and did some amateur children's performing as well but that was really my only claim to fame after the film i went back to being a kid did some high school drama stuff and at one time thought of being a drama coach however i am now a nurse in a new new newborn intensive care unit uh the show or the film was in syndication but i couldn't find any copies of it my mother had taped several um of the shows so this sounds like this maybe there was more than one huh that's interesting um but her house was burglarized and they took her videotapes would have loved to see their faces when they found what they got um so anyways yeah um i think i had put this online back in the day and or i had it mentioned on my website and she found me and so yeah i'm a big fan of uh finding the people that were in these films and i should say i don't want to get my hopes up but um i put out my my film professor friend uh dr marcia gordon uh has reached out to claudia silver the girl that's in fur coat club and hopefully we'll have some information about fur coat club um next week so we'll see uh anyways what time is it all right let's see um this is relatively short and it's uh useful information as always um and i should say before we watch it please hit like or subscribe that's a way that you can show support for av geeks also you can buy us coffee coffee is a wonderful way to support us caffeine is our drug of choice keeps our nerves pumping and then you can go to avgeeks.com and we have dvds for sale there and other episodes other shows that we've done in other films that we've digitized alright so this next film is uh teaches us how to get along with our parents there is a time when all young people feel the need for freedom to explore new horizons they are impatient and eager to discover life but between their eagerness and life's promises stands one unpredictable obstacle their parents gosh i've never been to the blue room bet no one in the whole class will think of going there after the dance the blue room gosh that's the dreamiest idea i've heard yet but count me out you know how strict my father is parents are sure tough i'm bound to get a battle out of mine but let's try all of us even you jane it's worth a try oh you guys have it easy parents are rougher than girls they just don't understand well what's the difference they treat us all like babies yeah here are six young people complaining about their parents are parents hard to live with don't they understand the younger generation at all or does the young generation misunderstand parents well i don't know what young people are thinking of these days no discipline no consideration no sense of the value of money everything seems so old-fashioned no sense of responsibility you know thinking too much freedom too much money i used to think we had problems when betty was little couldn't wait to see her grow it's the old story little kids little problems big kids big problem apparently somebody sees this question a little differently could it be that teenagers are hard to live with too maybe there are two sides to the question let's follow betty inside and get better acquainted with the andersons mother mother guess who has me to the class dance jimmy ellen i can go can't i of course you can oh i'm so happy see and you thought you'd never break into the new i thought i was going to be that new girl forever jimmy's going to drive and jane and mary and their dates are coming with us and afterwards mother we're going to the blue room everyone's going to die of envy that's that swanky place of the name band of the floor show you know betty i like your new friends they're they're nice children children and i know you're going to need a new dress dear well i don't know about the blue room afterwards dear but mother i gotta go where the crowd goes well let's wait and talk to dad before we get so upset i just heard this car drive out to be in in a minute hello there oh yeah i'm so glad you're home early guess what happened jimmy allen has invited betty to the class dance formal no less jimmy allen eh well it seems to me i've heard you mention him before oh father well what's wrong they want to go to the blue room afterwards the blue room oh no no that's out the class dance is all right but no blue room but father i've got to go where the crowd goes no you'll freeze me out again no betty it isn't as bad as all that it is it's worse betty's deeply hurt from her point of view her parents are being very hard but from her parents point of view betty is asking too much it's an argument that can be solved only by compromise but at betty's age it is difficult to accept compromise let's hear what jimmy's father thinks about their plan to go to the blue room hi dad hello son where you going taking out a client what's on your mind well don't forget you promised i could have the car for the class dance dad i told the kids i'd drive i won't forget but you have to put in the gas and you have to wash it wish i didn't have to go tonight didn't i wash it last time yes when i told you you couldn't have it again if you didn't accidentally i want to know what time you get home your mother worries when you have the car i know how to drive and i'm careful i'm always careful you probably are jimmy most of the time but you don't have to cause an accident to be in one i saw a car last night with at least 10 kids jammed into it well don't worry dad there are only six of us and fixing bill swanson's car gee dad why why do you always have to act like a state's attorney when i want to borrow the car jimmy's revolt against his inquisitive father is genuine regardless of his father's reasons for asking so many questions jimmy resents it oh but here they come let's listen are you going to come straight home after the dance or you're taking the girls out for a bite to eat well the real fun begins after the dance is over well kids all want to go down to the blue room the blue room down of the lake yeah why that place will cost a fortune do you think i'm made of money well gee dad it's the big dance of the year you gotta do something special well that's why i've been saving my allowance oh you have enough well almost i uh i thought maybe you could lend me a little bit or you did i supply the car plus your allowance and you expect me to let you have some more who's doing the courting you're my pocketbook when i was your age a dollar was a lot and five dollars was plenty for the junior prom well things are different now besides i'm only doing what the rest of the gang does i'm sorry you and your friends will have to think of something else to do something sensible jimmy and his father look at the question of using the car and spending money from different points of view true jimmy needs an opportunity to prove that he can carry responsibility but on the other hand he's been negligent in the past [Applause] in different homes different problems arise james date dick thinks his greatest problem is his mother hi mom sorry i'm late what's for dinner some good liver and bacon warmed over though you're very late tonight anything happen at the store don't forget your vitamins oh liver vitamin sounds like a doctor's prescription well you should have liver at least once a week you need vitamins too i know you tell me that every day where's paul you had to go out on a call again i wish you wouldn't work so hard dick you have too full of schedule i do not i'm doing okay well you're trying to do too much dickie but with your job your schoolwork going out to parties and dances and seeing your friends it's just too much for you i wish you'd quit that job oh ma i'm doing okay but you worry all the time i'm not a baby of course you're not but you're not grown up either now do drink your milk i wish you'd quit that job it's just too much for you i like my job it gives me some money of my own you know for like after the school dances you know dad would yell if i asked him for some money to go to the blue room the blue room that's no place for young people why not we're old enough the whole gang's going but you work so hard to save dick you can't afford to let money slip through your fingers and i won't have you staying out all night ruining your health i'll stay out all night ruin my health throw my money away can i do anything look i'm old enough to take care of myself i won't leave you alone and i won't have you ruining your health not after all i've gone through with you you were such a sickly baby oh for goodness thanks mom i'm not a baby anymore sometimes it seems hard to convince parents that you're growing up but on the other hand young people easily forget that for the greater part of their lives they've been completely dependent upon their mothers growing up is a long process with many ups and downs like dick many children have gone through long periods of illness from measles and chickenpox to upset stomachs and earaches and growing troubles of one kind or another and so it is perfectly natural for dick's mother to continue to protect him and it's perfectly natural for dick to assert his desire for independence what is the answer there is no one answer dick and his mother may have to face it that parents and children sometimes look at the same situation from opposing sides but let's leave dick's home and see why dick's date jane expressed so much concern about her parents i don't see why i can't go to the movies tomorrow night we discussed that at dinner because it's a school night you know the rules about school nights rules rules rule i can't do this i can't do that i can never do anything that's not true and you know it you've got a big weekend coming up with the class stand we gave you permission to go to that you'd have to be ogres to keep me from that well we're not ogres and we wouldn't keep you from it but your daddy said to tell you to be sure to be in by 12. 12. i can't be in by then i'll be the only one who can't go so where you are going not to the dance to the blue room afterwards remember the kids that came to my party last year while we're all going together in two cars i can't be in by them i'm sorry jane but your daddy says that 12 is the limit that's right young lady 12 o'clock that's plenty late for a girl your age and if you can't be in by 12 o'clock just forget the whole thing but father all the other girls i am not interested in what others do in my house i make the rules oh i might have known nobody else's parents are as strict as you are poor jane she's really upset of course she doesn't know that her friends aren't doing any better even though they could put up a longer fight jane's father is rather strict but there's a reason behind it he was brought up this way obeying his elders never questioning their commands and he lived a happy and successful life you can hardly blame him for trying to raise his family in the same spirit but jane resents it she wants to live her own life a life similar to those of her friends jane is torn by conflicts how to show respect for her parents and still have the right to live her own life as a full member of the family team some families achieve this feeling of teamwork at the conference table the smiths hold a family conference every few weeks to discuss budgets and allowances and other problems of mutual concern and when special problems come up they hold a special family conference to work it out together where does that leave us glenn well i guess that does it 25 now how much of that do you two think you should have for this one night not 20 i suppose well any other suggestions gee glenn i guess we're out we better tell the others right away well there must be something you can do that's fun just a little more practical well what are some of the alternatives well the high school hangout closes at 10 o'clock so that's out there's the paradise cafe in the all-night cafeteria and the drive-ins i guess they aren't very exciting are they on any of the girls having parties at their house yes but there's nothing to do it's the same old thing we want to do something special of course you do but couldn't we make it special sure special food music maybe favors or decorations for sure fine listen i have an idea could you leave it to a group of us parents just this once trust us to make it a special party [Applause] [Music] so [Applause] [Music] gosh the folks really picked this place up not exactly the blue room not the blue room check to pick up either hey this suits me fine me too i can just hear my old man since he went to land just so he doesn't hear you calling moles oh they're not so old really but they're so unpredictable yes unpredictable from jane's point of view just as she is from theirs but once the young adults understand that their parents are people people with habits moves that are right to live their own life and when the parents realize how important it is for the young adults to manage their own affairs then they can deal with each other as mutually respecting individuals and their relationships will be healthier and happier not quite the blue
