everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the 80 geeks lunchtime streaming show um i didn't intend to have the music spill over uh live but it's basically what i put to the film strips the filmstrips didn't really come with that music i put together a dvd called focus on film strips and all the film strips almost all the film strips i use were silent uh because you're supposed to read them there's no tape or record that accompanies them so i was like well what do i want to want to put on there i was like oh there's some awesome organ music uh that i have so i'll just put that on there um and when i put it on youtube i've gotten in trouble in the past where it's basically said like oh no this is this belongs to somebody uh so i usually mute it but somehow i didn't mute it right so there you go enjoy uh we'll see what happens if the hammer comes down um hope everybody had a good weekend uh i asked um because there's a lot going on in the headlines a lot of imagery a lot of anger frustration disappointment uh i asked that we give ourselves a break for an hour and let the 16 millimeter films that i'm showing you but let that be what you pay attention to and comment on and be snarky about um as there are certainly a lot of other things that we could be commenting on but i'm not saying that you shouldn't be thinking about this and happening what's happening current event-wise but this is our little break our little oasis of uh ludicrous 16-millimeter films so uh we'll start off with this film which i haven't seen um so there's always that that weird possibility that it might travel into the territory of current events so i'll take that gamble but um this one i got from uh the north carolina methodist film library uh they got rid of all their films and my stepfather's a methodist minister and so he said hey skip do you want these and so i was like yeah so uh this one's called william and i'm not really quite sure what it's about it comes with a program guide which i might be looking at and asking you questions after the fact but here's william [Music] you better get that one out come on you guys let's take it down [Music] foreign [Music] three come to play [Applause] up [Applause] [Music] a [Music] e wow so um it doesn't always happen but sometimes i get a little program notes uh that are included and uh let's see there's some weird poems in here but there's also what they call procedures which is really an odd way to view it for young audiences of younger children um they have a before viewing which i didn't ask you but here's discussion points um before anything else happened in the film we saw william and what else uh what clues did these things give you as to what william was going to be like did he turn out to be like that after all two how did william feel after the football team fell over him how can you tell how did you how did it make you feel when boys were falling and flying through the air did you see or hear anything in the food scene that made you laugh share those parts with the class do people really act like that at a picnic why do you think the people in the film did how does the film show that the people were enjoying their food for why didn't william have anything on his plate what did he do about it five william never did get to eat his food did he do you think that his brother and friends in the tree were being mean or just teasing is there a difference what would you have done if you were william and then there's more questions here um the the film reminded me a lot of uh cliff evans in cypher in the snow cliff who is a introvert um and also has a lousy family life um there's that whole thing where he's going out and looking at nature and he wrote a poem about it uh so william very similar in my my mind um and if he had not found uh at the end and then uh basically you know celebrated what would have happened to william i mean that's that's the real story there i think um but anyways yeah there you go there's your uh methodist film for the day um let's uh so uh one of my facebook friends who actually watches this show every uh almost every day and actually uh projects it on himself as he dances um had a little bit of a problem and i'm gonna try to get him to come on the show and talk about it but in the meantime here's the film that i probably should have shown last week that might have prevented what happened at the end of end of the week so here we go but no matter what the material or how sophisticated the equipment being used man is the only member in this combination that thinks that knows what is safe knows the material to select and why and knows which tool to use or machine to employ the only right way to work is the safe way you are the one who has to know what is safe you are the one who has to think safety at all times power tools are what you will want to use to help you do the job fast and efficiently they will help but only if you know how to make use of them and how to use them safely the decision is yours the switch should be off when you prepare the job if you know how to plan and how to prepare you will get the job done right and safely warped materials should be planed before working on them they represent danger so do knots they might fly out for each material there are preferences and drawbacks working safely will let you complete a job and will let you go on to the next an overheated bit could snap and injure but the application of oil the correct oil will help make the job safe know the material and tools you are going to use safe practices will get a job done well and safely the table saw has probably caused more accidents than any other power tool push stick different versions for different applications will help to keep your fingers away from the blade the stock you work should be secured if your hands let go it is you who might get hurt there are some operations that require the removal of the guard and for precision should be done without a push stick check with your instructor before you take this course of action and be sure to be familiar with the handling of the machine extra caution should of course be taken but never disregard the rule that waste stock should not be removed from any machine until after it has come to a complete stop don't ever reach across the cutting edge plan any job thoroughly select the tools you are going to use carefully and don't think it'll do if the tool you've selected is not in perfect shape a screwdriver misused a cold chisel worn out a chisel dull and nicked a handle split a handle broken inaccurate work will be the result but safety neglected is the real hazard a loose hammerhead may fly off it not only represents danger to yourself but everyone else around you as well take the time to wedge it and prevent accidents accidents don't just happen they are caused a greasy wrench handle might be just such a cause you can't get any grip and your hand will slip when you apply pressure a bird head on a center punch the hammer might slip your hands might get hurt but even more dangerous the burr might chip off dress properly dress protectively before you enter the shop in unarmed combat your clothing can be used against you by an opponent in the same way machines can grab your clothing and they won't stop even when you are down so dress for action don't give any machine a chance to get hold of your clothing take off your tie and take off your rings and wrist watch before you start to work shirt sleeves are bound to get in your way if you wear a smock button it up loose sleeves are rolled up above your elbow [Music] if you don't wear a smock wear an apron and don't forget when you work with a torch or any flame you will need extra protection put on a leather or asbestos apron to protect against the heat and shield your clothing against flying sparks protect your eyes no matter where you work safety glasses should be worn from the moment you enter the shop but sometimes a shield will offer better protection or goggles they should be used to protect you from flying particles wear safety glasses at all times don't forget that the machine that's working next to you can cause injury to you as well the floor in your shop should be kept clean but you have to work and the chips will fly solid leather shoes will protect you best from injury to your feet and gloves prevent cut fingers and shield you from heat think protectively dress protectively work protectively only then will you be able to work with the confidence of the skilled craftsman [Music] carrying material is part of any job be especially careful with long objects he's asking for trouble like this [Music] and this now he's got control one end is near the floor and the other end is out of the way of heads and other objects [Music] remember that the other fellows in the shop are concentrating on the job that they are doing don't place them in danger by the way you are doing your job directly or indirectly you can learn a lot about lifting from this fellow he is squatting not bending from the waist he is close to the weight with his feet apart he lifts with his leg muscles not his back follow the same practice in the shop when lifting anything get a good hold on the object you were lifting squat don't bend your back this technique is all important not only in professional training never bend over when you pick up anything your legs are stronger than your back rods can be as dangerous as bayonets carry them close to your body in a vertical position whenever you carry anything don't endanger somebody else's health or life tools are like weapons the best way to carry tools is in a carry-all keep pointed or cutting edges down if something is bulky or heavy ask for help you don't prove any point if you injure your back except that you have been careless remember that no matter what you do the best way has to be the safe way be sure to make and keep your shop a safe place to work in and be sure that you recognize safety hazards for what they are mistakes committed by you that can be very costly keep the floor in your shop clean and keep it free from obstacles a safe and non-slip footing will make you feel comfortable and will allow you to concentrate on what your hands are doing a cluttered floor doesn't make your job easier nor is it safe don't leave anything around for somebody else to trip over take the time to clear away shavings you have to be able to see what you're doing waste containers are there for your safety metal cuttings are dangerous don't let them accumulate a broken blade can be a hazard you'd use a brush to clean away broken glass so use a brush when you clean up your bench or machine too many tools around you won't save you time they'll create accidents return what you don't need right now but do it properly do it the safe way return surplus tools it's the safe way for yourself and others [Music] oily rags might start a fire when not used they belong in a covered container you know that accidents could happen know what to do if they do you should know the location of all breakers and power switches where the first aid box is kept and what it contains in case of fire it might depend on you to use the correct and safe extinguisher a foam extinguisher can handle fires involving wood and paper and paints lacquers and thinners but fires involving electrical parts and wiring will have to be fought with a carbon dioxide type of extinguisher only a dry chemical extinguisher can safely be used against any type of fire that music was awesome i'm a very big fan it just makes things so much more creepy and uh and uh dire i guess um anyways i'm sorry facebook friend for not showing this last week um because maybe it would have uh tipped you off um anyways i i'm working on maybe trying to have him on as a guest a brief guest this week also i should say that uh coming up on the 13th um i'm going to have joe and nick from the found footage festival we're going to watch some films and uh talk about films that they saw as kids and films uh they're also gonna bring some things uh they're great guys i've gone on tour with them they're hilarious um and they like to play games too actually we played quite a few games together anyways uh they've had me on their show a couple of times uh so i figured it's time that i have them on my show so that's on the 13th uh what do we got um here's a film it's kind of interesting uh it's a i like the films that i have that are niche that are meant for a very specific audience a very specific time and so this is meant for homeowners after their house has burned down it's called after the fire [Music] [Applause] [Music] this is the world we live in a marvel of inventive genius to make life richer individual homes and apartment houses factories warehouses stores office buildings structures and properties of every size and shape to produce and deliver the goods we've come to expect perhaps the most fantastic thing about it all is that what holds everything together is a mountain of paper spelled out on these papers are the agreements and promises that we live by without these papers chaos would follow among the most important of them are our insurance policies the reasons are clear with the best of planning disaster will sometimes strike sometimes it is due to nature on the rampage sometimes it is due to a mechanical failure or an automobile that has gotten out of control or a plane crash sometimes the cause is simply human carelessness perhaps failure to put out a cigarette a serious fire may never occur to any of us in a lifetime but when it does the consequences are serious how do you protect yourself against such a possibility how do you get back to where you were before the disaster struck most of us try to anticipate these questions and the best answer we have found lies in an insurance policy a piece of paper with promises to reimburse us for losses most of us carry fire insurance but how many of us have ever read the policy now suppose you do have a fire and you've sustained a serious loss up until now there was always something more pressing to do and when you finish these there was something more pleasant or easier to do than read a policy a policy is a complicated document with some pretty technical language [Music] [Music] so and so you filed it away unread or not completely understood now you've had a fire and all you want is to make a fair settlement so that you can get back to normal as it was before and what you're entitled to collect is contained in this contract what are your obligations what are your duties how can you comply with the policy conditions now with everything in a state of confusion you discover that the burden of preparing and presenting the required claim to the insurance company for the loss is up to you the burden of proving how much you've lost is on you and in due course you have to meet with the insurance company adjuster to negotiate a settlement from experience we know that insurance companies and their adjusters attempt to discharge their policy obligations that's what insurance is all about protection against loss and damage but even with the best of will on both sides it becomes clear once the routine questions are out of the way that the problems of a lost settlement are difficult now tell me did you have that hole in the roof covered and did you board up the broken windows under the contract you were obliged to if it rained and you sustained additional damage the responsibility was yours how about the plumbing lines did you drain them in freezing weather the lines might burst and you would have to break through the walls to repair them this additional loss is yours the insurance company is not responsible for this damage you mentioned that you've already had the debris cleaned out uh did you save all the items you could identify under your contract you have to establish evidence of your laws did you separate the damaged materials from the undamaged to prevent further damage have you wiped and oiled your machinery what is salvageable what is lost what's the value of a machine that you've used for six years how much depreciation or has it appreciated in value is it replaceable at what cost what about smoke or water damage what about overlapping policies what about loss due to business interruption the problems seem endless and even with the best of intentions on both sides the value of the loss is subject to difference of opinion and judgment the very words settlement and adjustment indicate this it may very well be that your claim is correct but you just have to recognize that i can't validate it solely on the basis of this statement where are your purchase invoices where's your complete inventory stating the value and loss of each item and you must do the same thing for the building damages i must have a detailed estimate how can we establish the extent of your claim unless you prepare it properly as your policy requires it becomes clear that the company adjuster has been employed by the insurance company to represent them he is also handling many other claims besides yours you cannot expect him to do your job and unravel the complicated details of your claim the burden of proving the loss is on you it also becomes clear that the company adjuster is a trained professional who knows all of the various policy forms conditions and requirements and that you do not have the knowledge or experience to cope with the problems without help and to top it all you may have two three or more company adjusters to deal with in short you need professional help it is at this point that most people who've had a fire discovered that they have a real problem who do you turn to for expert help from experience we know that when we have a legal problem we turn to a lawyer when we need an insurance policy we consult an agent or broker but to whom do you turn for specialized knowledge and experience when you face the complexities of a fire or disaster loss the answer is here a member of the national association of public insurance adjusters or napia for short people who have had experience with fire losses such as insurance agents and brokers banks and accountants have learned to depend on this symbol for competent loss adjustments members of the national association of public insurance adjusters are professionally trained to handle such matters they are examined and licensed by the various states in which they practice their profession let's take a look at what happens when you call a nappy member into the picture now right from the outset you have the same professional handling and negotiation of your claim that the insurance company adjuster performs for his company acting solely on behalf of policy holders the only purpose of a napier member is to make a speedy and equitable adjustment for you his client okay now the first thing i want to do is to take a look at the damage we have to shut off the water right away and get that roof covered we better make sure that those machines are properly protected and we have to be careful that none of the things we're going to need to prove the loss are cleaned out with years of experience your napier public insurance adjuster has learned what to look for and what to do now with an expert protecting your interests you are freed to cope with your normal problems it is necessary to translate the material losses into dollar value it takes substantial effort and experience to arrive at the figures and this is the job that your napia public insurance adjuster handles for you notified the insurance company while i go through the policy then get me jim walker on the phone walking stevens i need detailed specifications on the building damage and we've got a lot of temporary repairs that have to be done or also want to speak to kelly he has to get over there and sort out the stock and prepare a detailed inventory and i'm going to need figures from d engineering [Music] item by item your public insurance adjuster prepares all of the inventories and estimates and compiles your claims many factors such as co-insurance non-concurrencies pro rate reliability and dozens of others must be considered each of them is important in preparing a claim they vary greatly from situation due situation and with the terms of the policies and when your claim is prepared and ready your nap your representative meets with a fire insurance company adjuster to reach an agreement on your loss it is now a negotiation between two competent professionals one of them represents the company and the other represents you item by item detailed by detail both men have seen the loss studied it and made their evaluations the work is substantially simplified and a speedy and equitable adjustment is reached and when the loss is satisfactorily adjusted the agreement is subject to your approval the sole objective of your napier public adjuster is to help you solve the many heavy problems and burdens of your loss in our complicated world there is no substitute for specialized training and experience that's what it takes to make our system work and that's what it takes to put it back in shape again when disaster strikes and there is no better trained and experienced source of help available to you than a nappier public insurance adjuster that's why a member of napier is the one to turn to as your very first move when disaster strikes as someone pointed out uh in the comments the insurance adjuster was cruising for a bruise in there that guy i've had pretty good uh experiences with insurance adjusters with uh my house uh having had trees fall on both houses both the archive and which happened last year and uh my house a couple years ago so thankfully they got their act together uh let's see what do we got what do we want to watch uh let's learn we've been talking about safety a lot so let's uh let's learn to stop and go safely uh this is missing the beginning title but it's still pretty good so we all realize that there are certain things which we must do do we know why we must do these things another reason well sometimes isn't it so we won't be selfish yes that's a very important reason and one that we often forget streets and sidewalks belong to and we all use them so wear them by being courteous that's right that's a rule you bet it is we have traffic rules we tell us how to be good citizen by reminding us to be alert and careful as well as courteous and considerate can we think of some more rules wouldn't another rule be stop look and listen at a train crossing yes that's a rule and it reminds us to be alert let's have another rule there's a sign in your high school that's for cars to make them slow down yes we have a rule that drivers must be extra careful when they go past schools and playgrounds now how about some of the rules which help us to be courteous thoughtful and considerate i'm signalized at crossings to make us take turns that's a good example of a courtesy rule signals make us take turns by making traffic going one way wait for traffic going the other way when we ride our bikes there's a rule that we must signal when we're going to turn a corner that rule helps us be considerate of others by letting them know just what we're going to do now here's an important question whose job is it to enforce the rules to see to it that everyone is alert careful courteous and considerate do you know that's you isn't it isn't that what policemen are for at first it may seem that way but that's not entirely true the traffic policeman's job is to help people to learn the rules and to remind them when they forget the rules but traffic policemen can't be everywhere at once there are lots more people to watch than there are policemen to watch them you can imagine how silly it would be if each one of us had to have his own special policeman watching over him all the time just to see that no rules were broken no that wouldn't be practical and it isn't necessary if you're a good citizen and want to be courteous to others and avoid getting hurt you must be your own traffic policeman now that's not as difficult as it might sound can anyone think of the first thing he might do in order to be his own traffic policeman well to be a policeman you have to know the rules yes that is absolutely necessary and after we learn the rules then what then then we have to follow the rules right and that's all there is to it if we know the rules and follow the rules then each one of us can be his own traffic policemen would you come up here johnny now johnny's own traffic policeman is really up here in his mind and let's imagine that johnny's own he looks like johnny because he really is a part of johnny the part that learns and thinks about traffic rules and traffic courtesy in the rules and developing habits he knows that his policeman will be there when he's to remind him of the rules and warn him of danger if johnny really thinks about safety all the time and tries to learn he can about safety then he'll have a policeman to help him be autism let me tell you a story about a friend of mine and how his own traffic policeman was on the job to help him avoid getting hurt his name is jimmy and on this particular day his mother sent him to the store and i just need a loaf of whole wheat this should be enough and watch out for the cars on the road yes mom jimmy was thinking mothers worry too much after all he was big enough to know the rules like the one that he should walk down the road on the left side facing the traffic so he could watch out for cars and jimmy knew how to cross the road safely too he didn't have to be told to watch out for cars yes jimmy knew how to take care of himself but the main thing we must all learn about safety is that accidents happen suddenly and usually when we least expect them now we'll see why it was a good thing that jimmy's own policeman was on the job with him that day gee dick's got a new kite hey and then jimmy almost forgot to be alert that is he would have forgotten if his own policeman hadn't suddenly said wait let's not forget to be alert jimmy stopped suddenly realizing that he was about to break the rules he could well imagine what might have happened to him if his own policeman hadn't reminded him be alert we all know that dashing into the road from between parked cars is dangerous jimmy knew it too and because he'd formed the habit of thinking about safety his own policeman was on the job to help him even though he did almost forget wait a minute after all dick didn't mind waiting just a little bit longer so jimmy could take the time to cross the road carefully and that's how jimmy avoided getting hurt because he'd learned the rules and had formed a safe habit would you have remembered in time if you were jimmy perhaps some of you have had an experience like jimmy's when you stopped yourself just in time to avoid causing a traffic accident i had one a few weeks ago i remember tired of just skating around there so i challenged jane to erase come on i'll race you to my house okay if i can start it get set go i got off to a good start and pulled ahead of jane but even though i was ahead i wasn't sure i could beat her we had quite a distance to go so i skated as fast as i could i didn't want to give her a chance to catch up and pass me and then i remembered that to get to my house we would have to cross maple street as we raced toward the crossing i tried to decide whether i should stop at the corner and look for cars or not after all i would have felt silly if i had stopped and jane didn't she might pass me not many cars use maple street so maybe it wouldn't be dangerous but you hold on you're forgetting to be careful that was my own policeman talking to me quickly i imagined what might have happened if i had gone ahead and taken a chance there was no way i could tell whether there was a car coming or not it would have served me right for having been careless it was a good thing my police helped me to stop and think of the rural times sporting enough to make me take a chance of getting hurt i would stop even if jane did catch up and i'm glad i stopped because there really was a car coming ha ha i caught up with you wait till we cross the street then i'll beat you we all know that stopping to carefully look both ways before we cross the street is an important traffic rule it's when we are in too much of a hurry that we're likely to forget and take his chances well jane won that race but i just assumed she had one as you have taken the chance of getting hurt thank you helen that was a good story it showed that we should never be jealous by taking unnecessary chances has anyone else had an experience like helen's he'd like to tell us about billy one day after school jack and i were playing together over in his front yard we had my football i wanted to kick the ball but jack said better not you might break the window jack was right but i still wanted to kick the ball and the playground was pretty far from jack's house let's go out on the street and kick it okay we were just starting to go out in the street and my policeman made me stop and think wait what are streets for anyway rise then i thought of what might have happened to us if we had gone ahead and played in the street it's easy to be selfish and forget that children are not being courteous when they play in the streets streets are for cars and they have the right of way of course playing in the street can be dangerous as well as selfish because a driver might not have some time to stop i'm glad my policeman was on the job to help me remember to be courteous and careful before i took a chance of getting hurt once i stopped to think about it i changed my mind fast maybe you better not play in the street it's too dangerous all right let's go to the playground after all it was better to walk a few blocks to the playground than to have taken a chance of causing an accident it seems silly now but adam he did almost forget that was a good story billy you pointed out the selfishness of playing in the street as well as a danger as good citizens we must always remember to be courteous do you want another story well one day margie she's a friend of mine and i were walking home from school i had promised my mother with some work but we were a little late what's the hurry come on margie i'm late there was a traffic signal at the next street we had to pause let's go wait the signal's changing i intended to try beat the signal stop it's not our turn my own policeman was with me to help me remember the rules and i quickly imagined what might have happened if i had forgotten to be considered of the cars going the other way i wasn't in that much of a hurry my own placement in time to remember to be a good citizen by waiting my turn signal lights are put at the corners to help us and we must stop when they tell us to even though we were in a hurry moments it took while we waited for the signal to change didn't really make much to matter i turned across the street was saved as the cars obeyed the signal and waited that one by remembering to be considerate isn't it yes barbara it certainly is now i think we all realize the importance of being our own traffic policeman do we all agree that from now on we'll try to be our own traffic policeman all right what do we do first well we have no that's correct then what then we have to follow the rules and to be sure we follow the alert careful courteous and considerate perfect but now won't you just write it so that film was kind of beat to hell um so it's it's interesting i um when i see a film like this what it tells me is that this film was shown a lot um and they kept repairing it and they kept reshowing it and they kept damaging it more and kept showing it um so this film is definitely one that somebody felt that they had to show it a lot uh and the information is pretty good i like the little little kid cops that live in our heads um i like to think that my conscience is maybe a little police officer of me as a child um but this is made by porta films and portafilms did helping johnny remember which is that weird film where kids are kind of in this like black area like they're in purgatory and they're trying to deal with the fact that johnny is being um mean and being unsocial um and so this is got that vibe where you have a narrator but then you have kids kind of chiming in about the experience and all that because i think the kids respond when other kids are talking so thanks again for tuning in today if you liked what you saw uh a simple way to to support us is to just is my way of doing it for you guys but i hope that you're also reaching out to your family and friends and also if you need help you know um sometimes people don't know and you can just say like hey can we talk and you know talking on the phone makes a big difference or zoom conferencing with somebody makes a big difference or face timing so um take care of yourselves please we love you very much
