hello welcome everybody to uh january 1st 2021 uh as we know it around av geeks it's a public domain day sorry uh anyways uh so because of our messed up copyright laws um it is uh there was a period of time where thanks to the sonny bono and the digital millennium copyright act we didn't have things falling into public domain for quite a while there was a gap of like 20 years or something like that was really horrible but now uh what's happening is things are beginning to fall back into public domain so i think it's everything from 1925 back is in public domain so one of the things of note is great gatsby uh there's some films of course um and uh public domain is is very important um because it is returning back to us the people uh what was created and um gives us the ability to reuse it and uh you know come up with other ways to talk about it and without fear of being slapped with a copyright suit from whoever owns it uh and in most cases the people who own the copyrights no longer live it is the families it is the companies and their uh as we know from watching the av geeks streaming show we get slammed with copyright things all the time mostly for music but sometimes for other things and that is basically limiting how we can share the content uh and in many cases the content is something that just uh is gonna languish it's gonna rot away and so we have to celebrate uh celebrate public domain so i think it's also new year's day too but that's not important so anyways uh we're gonna watch because it's really kind of a holiday day for me i did want to say hi and hello and say thank you and welcome to a new year uh and we're gonna be watching some films today um almost entirely commercials uh and these are commercials from a company or from a person who used to work for a company that was based in cleveland um so here is a bunch of things from movie makers uh that they either shot or they produced or had something to do with so many of these are going to be focused in the ohio area but there's going to be other commercials that are other things so it's a variety of different things people i like watching commercials from the past because they kind of give us a sense of what was important to us and the sales techniques seem a little uh dated but um i can't i can't watch current advertising it's really insidious to me but um here we go
