foreign body I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where I have my laptop balanced on my knee and my belly so it might wiggle a little bit I hope you don't get nauseous uh anyways uh we are not at the archive we are traveling on the west coast and we are in Portland we just did a show last night um and this is pre-recorded before the show so I'm just assuming it's going to be awesome and then I met some of you there um I'll do shout outs at some point um but anyways uh excuse me we are doing this uh little vacation uh mini tour and we're going to be in San Francisco uh in a couple of days and we'll be doing a show at Exploratorium on Saturday then at the Alamo Drafthouse mission on Monday um and so this is pre-recorded and this is a theme show because it's easier for me to do theme shows when I get stuff that's pre-recorded uh so today today is a bunch of films about crashes um I'm not going to show any of the highway safety Foundation uh driver's ed films which have horrific crashes but I'm going to show some ones that kind of go all over the Spectrum so first one we're going to watch I'm going to introduce everything um and then we're just gonna you just get to watch then I'll say goodbye at the end um first one is a Keystone Cops film love Loot and crash next is a driver's safety film called Crossroads crash which has kind of a gangster theme to it uh then there's dynamics of a crash which has some wonderful slo-mo push it slow motion footage of Crash Test Dummies going through windshields uh then mystery crash we'll try to figure out what causes the crash then this is Untitled but it's uh basically it's testing a local emergency response uh in the 50s and it's about an airplane crash so it's all you'll see people in stretchers and like blood but it's all fake it's not real and then finally the topper uh crash bang boom which is an amazing film that got voted down for a uh toe tapping tournament I think the first year but it's still great nonetheless it's very catchy very catchy so uh watch films about crashes and we'll come back and we'll say goodbye enjoy [Music] thank you thank you foreign [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] did you ever notice how people in a hurry tend to disobey the rules now that can get them in a lot of trouble if you happen to be in their way it can also get you in a lot of trouble it isn't every day you run into a bank robber but one out of three accidents occur at intersections they happen every day and usually because somebody did something wrong besides obeying the rules yourself you've always got to look out for the autograph [Music] an intersection is a place where traffic moves in many directions this intersection is regulated by a traffic light it is regulated but not controlled the control comes from the drivers themselves a traffic light is a timing device it measures the time allotted for each line of traffic to move ahead it says who must deal the right-of-way but it does not prevent other drivers from being wrong when they are the results can be disastrous as a driver your first job is to know the rules your second to obey them your third to guard against the mistakes of others [Music] this intersection has no stop signs or lights it is unregulated when two cars arrive at the same time the law dictates that the car on the left shall yield to the car on the right but don't bet your life on it some drivers forget and nobody wins a tie occasionally at intersections regulated by four-way stop signs four cars arrive at once then who goes first the solution to this problem is courtesy and communication [Music] a yield sign means that you must yield to cars on the intersecting roadway if you roll through a yield sign and cause an accident it's your fault yeah this car has violated the driver rolled through the stop sign he did not stop completely now this might be okay for a yield sign but a stop sign means what it says and you must stop at the line or before if there is no line then stop at the crosswalk red light means the same as a stop sign oh a flashing yellow light is a warning signal and means proceed with caution at an intersection it is similar to a yield sign and this familiar sign while it's the most useful of all frequently means trouble a lot of people play games with traffic lights [Music] one of the most common is trying to beat a stale green light this driver knows that green light ahead is stale he knows it will shortly change but he wants to beat it just for the fun of it or because he's impatient and he made it this time odds are the odds will catch up with him if he's lucky he'll get a ticket if not he'll get this it's not smart to play games with two tons of steel the right way to approach an intersection is to get your speed down to the point where you can stop easily take your right foot off the accelerator and poison over the brake pedal that saves you vital reaction time in case you need to stop before starting off at an intersection look first to your left and then to your right to make sure the cross traffic has stopped there may be some Joker coming your way who never heard of stale green if you're going to make a turn show your intention well in advance both by signal and position get in your turning lane well in advance of the turn ing a left turn don't try to Dart in front of oncoming traffic they have the right of way and you must wait until there's a safe break in oncoming traffic it's also a good idea to keep your wheels pointed straight ahead while waiting to make a left turn that way if you're Struck from behind you won't be shoved into the oncoming traffic make your turn briskly but carefully pedestrians May Dash into the crosswalk and force you to stop turn into the inside Lane don't swing wide into the outside Lane where there may be a conflict with an oncoming vehicle making a right turn when you make a left turn at an intersection don't stop beyond the center as these cars are they are hopelessly locked in the tangle turn instead execute the tangent turn from a position short of the center this permits traffic from both directions to turn left at the same time [Music] the expressway no intersection problems here right wrong it's just a different kind of intersection with a whole new set of problems thank you [Music] watch out for these signs you're on an exit lap instead of an entrance ramp and on your way to a deadly head-on crash in high-speed traffic when you enter an expressway it's an intersection of sorts speed up in the acceleration Lane and blend into the traffic stream smoothly approaching an interchange move into the passing Lane leaving the entry Lane open for merging cars thing off get in the deceleration Lane well in advance and signal slow down and enter the exit ramp at the posted speed if by chance you should overshoot your exit you must go ahead to the next exit don't try to back up and get on the ramp when you leave the expressway shift your metal gears to prepare yourself for the slower cruising speeds of non-express way driving and remember one third of all accidents happen at intersections and most because of some kind of carelessness know where you're going show where you're going [Music] slow for the intersection and go when it's safe [Music] hey Defensive Driving protects you from the jokers of this world foreign [Applause] [Music] car crashes each year they kill thousands of Americans and injure hundreds of thousands the majority of all fatal injuries to people and collisions occur in head-on and angled frontal car crashes in a frontal crash it's all over in a Split Second let's imagine that we're in the front seat of a car like this that these test dummies are me for you or someone you love watch the car is a wreck and the occupants are a wrecked too but it needn't be this way for them or for us this is a vehicle test track and these are test dummies on the highway they'd be real people let's take a very slowed down look at what happened to dummies like these in that frontal crash we saw a moment ago the car is traveling at 35 miles an hour now the car contacts an object ahead here it's a test barrier in the real world it might be a bridge Pier a tree a poll or another vehicle the car is being brought to a crushing stop meanwhile inside the car the people keep moving forward at about the same speed 35 miles per hour until they crash into the structures ahead their crash began a split second after the car struck the barrier here's the crash again from inside the car now the car has started to impact the barrier fraction of a second later the unrestrained occupants begin their crash in that critical moment had the people been provided with sufficient restraining protection their chances of being killed or seriously hurt would have been greatly reduced in slow motion that's what goes on in a frontal crash an event that in reality takes place so fast it's over like that researchers have known for decades that much of the death and serious injury in frontal crashes is needless if the bodies of the people in the crashes are properly restrained that is slowed down more gently and kept from smashing into the car's interior structure they're much less likely to be killed or seriously injured seat belts can do the job but only if they're worn the law requires that new vehicles be equipped with safety belts at the Chrysler Proving Grounds impact tests are conducted under rigidly controlled conditions the results are dramatic proof that seat belts save lives [Music] at only 30 miles per hour without belts we can see through slow motion that the dummy is thrown against the windshield with deadly force at one-fifth true speed we have a sobering view of the sudden action employing the use of the lap belt only we repeat the test results are conclusive protective restraint is gained for the lower portion of the body but the upper body is still thrown forward a speed up in action accentuates the possibility of a serious head injury using both lap and shoulder belts provides remarkably improved results the dummy is fully restrained and protected from contact with both windshield and instrument panel closer to True speed lap and shoulder belts mean added safety a crash if it happens to you will it be this or this or this safety is within easy reach lap and shoulder belts save lives [Music] [Music] mystery crash takes four you guys gonna spoil a ten dollar Buzz with a 10 cent fish fry you got a point toss me another one of those we got enough to last us till tomorrow only if we leave early did you invite anybody to dinner Fred do you invite anybody to dinner Al invited him to dinner ah get a guy from the marina yep oh I've been looking for you all day and Ernie Johnson called and says his wife's in labor you got to come back right away and take the Sunday afternoon shift form Sunday did he say Sunday that's tomorrow's Sunday uh yeah I really hate to do this to you guys but well you see I've been promising earning for months that I take over for him when a baby came and I really hate to drag you guys back a whole day early maybe I could get back without my car no sweat man someday Ernie will do the same for you huh how about that old Ernie's gonna be a daddy yeah well we're gonna get you back in time we better start now uh one thing I don't feel like doing is driving right now uh looks like the beer is running out anyway what our time to have lost my license looks like I'm the only one in shape to dry and don't worry look a cup of coffee and I'm good for all night it may take all night and then some and those clouds are rolling in that's funny those four beers really hit me four a six-pack fuel you didn't need anything all day forget it none of us say we can get something when we stop for coffee [Music] these wipers are just no wet at all sake slow down don't slow down we got to get back for good old Ernie Brightside hey these are the brights man that pothole we hit back there muddied them up a nice car you got here Al though this road man there's nobody on this road this time of night I besides I've never had an accident yet you never drove a Rattle Trap like this either I resent that a couple of new tires and it'll get you anywhere [Music] damn these wipers hey was that a curbside let me put drop down there is that lightning Jesus [Music] [Music] it's called the mystery crash because often no one is left to tell what really happened we do not know the reasons for the one car accident the mystery crash if indeed it has a single reason we do know the ingredients inclement weather an unfamiliar Road and unfamiliar car a vehicle in poor condition a poor Road and one other ingredient perhaps the most lethal one alcohol [Music] in this country there are 122 million drivers about 95 million adults 18 years of age or older drink alcoholic beverages about 50 000 will die in the highways this year and half of these deaths will involve alcohol in some form prove the problem Drinker is involved in many of those fatalities but this may come as a surprise the social Drinker is a big part of the picture fun [Music] dangerous all the more so because he doesn't know he's dangerous the brain is a computer constantly receiving information through the census enabling you to make Split Second decisions alcohol is a drug it is absorbed into the bloodstream the moment it reaches the brain it short circuits the computer judgment is impaired reflexes are slowed vision is reduced just enough to make the difference in a safe trip and an accident all are factors which make it difficult to cope with the unexpected and the driver is not aware just how dangerously his coordination is affected the intoxicated driver is not aware of what is happening to it incidentally alcoholic impairment is not an opinion it is a legal fact and there are machines that measure it when a driver is arrested for driving while intoxicated a police officer will ask him to take a breath test the accused driver merely blows a sample of his breath into a disposable tooth which is connected to the breath testing machine the machine measures and registers the percentage of alcohol in the blood the result is the BAC blood alcohol concentration in all but three states one-tenth of one percent or more blood alcohol concentration is legal evidence of intoxication one-tenth of one percent means one drop of alcohol per one thousand drops of blood the calculation takes seconds it is accurate it is accepted in court the machine only affirms in a technical way what the Drinker at this stage is unable to tell himself in general most Breakers go through predictable stages as their blood alcohol concentration increases at one hundredth of one percent blood alcohol concentration the social Drinker is hardly influenced as normal actions one beer produces the slightest effect at two to three hundredths of one percent blood alcohol concentration the social Drinker is elated Pleasant more sociable a couple of beers can put him there at five hundredths of one percent the social Drinker loses some of his inhibitions is more given to impulsive behavior three beers could get him to this plateau at .08 or 0.09 percent he's flirting with a legal danger point the signs are beginning to show at one tenth of one percent he is confused staggering and speech is slurred one six-pack can put him over the one-tenth of one percent level now let's go back to that one can of beer come on you're saying just one can of beer well it's a cold sober Fact one 12-ounce can of beer contains as much alcohol as one shot of 86 proof whiskey and the effects are the same the concentration of alcohol a change in the blood depends on the amount obviously you've had to drink the time span of drinking your body weight and the amount in type of food in your stomach maybe you won't know your blood alcohol concentration but you will know how many beers you've had and this rule is easy to remember one six pack don't drive back at least not right away because the blood alcohol concentration cannot be lowered except through passage of time exercise fresh air cold showers forget them and the only thing black coffee can do is turn a sleepy drunk into a wide awake one how long should you wait to drive after drinking in one hour the alcohol in a single beer will be dissipated by the body generally allowed two hours for two beers and yes more than three hours for three bears because for DWI driving while under the influence the penalties are severe conviction can mean jail for a year in some states and loss of your license legal fees if you want to fight it can mount up to a thousand dollars or more should you lose the fight or lose your driving privileges for a year auto insurance rates can double easily should your job of course require driving and your license is revoked well you're out of a job simple in any case DWI will cost it could cost you your life [Music] the social drinker for all his gregariousness a mystery because in his unguarded moments it's one of the very human ingredients in yes the mystery crash the one type of accident over which the driver has complete control the social Drinker he's the wife of guy who just may not know his limit the social Drinker everybody likes him immediately until they meet him on the road [Music] at the scene of the disaster teamwork of Key Community Services goes into action the first objective is to put out the fire and prevent further destruction and danger no single group can operate alone when major disaster strikes screw comes its own chair of the response to each its own share of the burden and the Heart of the operation is a plan a disaster plan implemented and ready for action now under medical Direction the first the first aid part of the training of any Boy Scout there is to devote their skills to the more seriously injured work that could mean the difference between life and death work that takes its own toll of concentration work that teaches the all-important lessons of survival at a time of critical importance work that will leave an unforgettable memory yes on all sides Guided by the skilled the doctors and assistants have given Red Cross Boy Scouts veterans are united in a common effort to help and assist when disaster strikes after administering all the first aid and emergency treatment that can be given the move to the hospital begins carried out by willing skilled and Cooperative hands vehicles too are carefully planned for with attendance as well as drivers assigned to each regular ambulances station wagons manned by the Red Cross mail trucks whose flat bodies are ideal for emergency service meanwhile the hospital evacuation team swings into action the purpose here is to make room for the reported number of casualties by moving ambulatory and other patients to the nurse's home across the street in a major disaster up to 450 emergency cases could be handled by using the facilities of this hospital and its nurse's home in this case however only enough patients are removed to make room required for casualties medical records and personal belongings accompany each patient help comes from many quarters including official and volunteer community groups all working under the Community disaster plan for the less seriously injured an outpatient department is established in the nurse's home thus the hospital's maximum facilities will be available for emergency cases other teams break out supplies and set up stored cots converting the cafeteria into an emergency shock and burn Ward the accident room is converted into a fracture room and other shifts are made in preparation until the entire hospital is in a state of readiness the somber rolling parade reaches the hospital Gates post office trucks ambulances private station wagons and other vehicles all part of the community disaster plan all handled by teams drilled and practiced in their roles the hospital yard has been cleared to make room for the arrivals the casualties are handled carefully but swiftly our area it is important that the Sorting area be located near an entrance available to ambulances to provide quick and efficient transfer of casualties from here the hopelessly injured are removed to a temporary Ward where their pain can be eased until Medical Care More urgently needed elsewhere can come their way the seriously injured are moved directly to the shock and burn room for intensive immediate treatment from here they can be moved to the fracture room or operating room if necessary ambulatory patients go to the outpatient area in the nurse's home and finally those Dead on Arrival to the temporary morgue of extreme importance in the sorting and transfer of casualties is the identification and history tag attached to the patient on arrival it will be filled out where first treatment is given or if Dead on Arrival it will serve to identify the victim when such information is sought by relatives and Friends in the cafeteria now converted to an emergency shock and burn Ward immediate treatment is given a number of things prepared for and outlined in the overall disaster plan happen almost simultaneously the casualties are re-evaluated for treatment fluids and plasma expanders are given for those who have inhaled burning fumes emergency tracheotomies may be needed to permit air passage to the lungs for burn treatment the emergency procedures agreed upon by the medical staff in advance are put into effect patients in shock will usually have feet elevated on blocks to promote blood flow to the Head and for those who must have it a blood transfusion after blood types have been cross-matched at the laboratory in another part of the community new blood is donated place that used in the emergency at every step of the way records are kept for the time when they will be needed clothing is removed and arrangements made for safekeeping are valuables here in the emergency shock and burn Ward we see the value of planning for disaster essential minimum treatment is provided so that all casualties can receive medical attention extensive treatment will be administered as soon as possible under extreme emergency conditions only procedures to preserve life are done on re-evaluation this case was diagnosed as ruptured spleen with internal bleeding for shock and is now ready for surgery to preserve life an exploration is made keeping the operating room clear for this kind of work while work not so essential Waits is one of the basic and primary goals of the entire plan to surgery would come for example severe Hemorrhage cases crushing injuries of the head or chest and severe penetrating injuries now thanks to the planning already done a serious case has been cared for and the operating room is cleaned and made ready for another in the accident room now established as a fracture room preparations are made for splinting or traction this patient has been reevaluated as to his basic state and now more adequate splitting is applied again the emphasis is on keeping the facilities clear making room for a steady flow of necessary work and avoiding bottlenecks under disaster conditions cases which would normally be handled immediately will have to wait except under unusual circumstances no x-ray evaluation will be made of a case like this plaster immobilization 2 will come later for the present splints will do the orthopedic team is responsible for the repeated observation of all casualties as well as traction frames and special appliances designed to preserve function through proper position by preventing pressure complications from the shock and burn Ward from surgery from the fracture room all patients move into the expanded Wards temporary areas set up with cots and beds in this Hospital there is room for six Wards organized on this pattern patient care and the immediate post-disaster period is instituted along supportive lines bed rests parenteral therapy oxygen therapy antibiotics and other medically indicated therapy and observation an immunization team consisting of a physician and a nurse is responsible for prompt Administration and tetanus prophylaxis to all patients with Burns compound fractures puncture wounds and multiple lacerations in making the patient comfortable this nurse's aide under supervision of the head nurse provides valuable and helpful service at this point the disaster victims have become patients of the hospital and are cared for as such these activities provide another example of the kind of planning training and teamwork that could mean the difference between life and death under other and deadlier conditions other means of communication trained alert Messengers are an integral part of the disaster team as are the members of the information and Records team to them are brought the individual cards the identifications the other Clues to the identity of the casualties upon them folds the responsibility for making sure that information correct information is available on demand they are also responsible for making sure that families friends and relatives receive accurate knowledge of those dear to them as promptly as possible it now becomes increasingly clear why the outpatient emergency area is set up across the street first to provide immediate care for ambulatory patients second to keep the critical areas of the main hospital clear for smooth handling of the seriously injured the hospital must arrange to care for those who were evacuated earlier to make room for the disaster casual days re-evaluation of their needs may make it possible in some cases to have them move to their homes or other nearby facilities this will provide room for casualties who cannot be moved again the records and belongings of these patients are carefully checked and arrangements made for transfer of those who can be moved as soon as practicable the hospital administrator calls a meeting of the departmental heads to plan for the best possible medical and hospital care for casualties yes when disaster strikes it is too late to make plans away must be devised before disaster strikes to handle casualties swiftly efficiently and capably a disaster plan prepared in advance and coordinated with existing services and Facilities is essential to a sound Hospital program personnel must be trained to provide immediate care for each patient in accordance with his needs in addition the plan must anticipate the needs of the hospital itself should Public Utilities be disrupted this may call for standby sources of power water fuel and other Essentials necessary to hospital function in time of emergency hahaha [Music] [Music] you think I finally got a second copy of that and so I need to transfer it again because I think it's a little bit better shape but uh it is so great some people love it and some people absolutely hate it
