hello everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show and I am not in the archive today because I'm actually showing films to a bunch of students at NC State uh it's a I think it's an intro to film class and what that means is that there's potentially people in there who were not film study students and I get to bring in a projector and show actual 16mm films from my collection and will blow their minds I think I don't know there might be some people who are totally disinterested they'll be on their phones um but this is my opportunity to to show to the general population um and I'm going to do it with the film Professor uh Dr Mara Gordon who uh we've done some work together in the past but the I'm going to actually show you what we're going to be showing them so the first film we're going to show is a film about film making which is uh basically something that would be shown to students who were taking classes on film about the process and about editing and about just what it takes to make a film uh the next film we're going to show is one that Dr Gordon and I uh campaigned for and got entered into the national film registry uh it's Felicia it's this amazing student documentary uh where they interviewed a young African-American uh girl high school student uh about what it was like to live in watts and this is months before the Watts Riots took place and it's just just really fascinating uh film about how she felt growing up there what her aspirations were and it's it's interesting because it's just this unique voice um certainly there were a lot of people being interviewed after the Watts Riots about specifically what it was like to live in watts and what led to what had happened happened but this was uh a voice you know a young high school student like who talks to a young high school student uh especially back in the 60s uh so it did get entered into the national film registry and the one thing I'm proud of beyond that is the fact that it was actually a Jeopardy question it was I was so excited to see it on Jeopardy and go like oh my God it's Felicia so anyways uh next film we're going to watch is uh one of Dr Gordon's favorites uh which is Linda's film uh about rtion uh and it features a uh actor that you know uh chances are if you have AMC and then finally we're going to end it with uh R Rivas talks about worms our favorite uh puppet talks about intestinal parasites and why it's important not to use the outof doors as a restroom um some of these I've I probably I've shown most of these uh on my shows in the past but it's always good to revisit especially R Rivas R Rivas is a big big fan of R Rivas and I did actually meet um Joe buy the man who did R Rivas when he was a high school student uh he did it for South Carolina educational television and uh for this show that was kind of like a South Carolina version of Romper Room um but he played the bad boy of R Rivas so everybody enjoy and uh if me down like man Lord Lord cut maybe you've thought of making a film if so watching us make ours may help you of course each film has its own requirements but you'll get an idea of the general steps you'll need to follow at the end of this movie you'll see our finished film but first here's my crew this is Bill the cameraman I'd seen some still pictures Bill had taken and saw he had a good visual sense I thought we could work together well putting my idea on film so I asked him to help me [Music] Debbie is the script girl I knew she was good at organization that's why I asked her to help we discovered that she was also the best film editor in our group but I should tell you how my film got started of course the film had to start with an idea one Saturday Debbie and I took a drive and ended up on Maxwell Street I was impressed and excited by the sights the sounds and the people of the Open Air Market it seemed like another world I was especially impressed by one old blind man who played the guitar people who passed by liked his music and some of them Dro money into the paper cup pinned to his shirt I started to imagine what it would be like if a young guitarist who was an outsider wandered into this world of Maxwell Street how would the people react to him would they be hostile would he be nervous or embarrassed could he make money playing like the other musicians on the street I decided what I thought might happen and developed a clear idea of what I wanted my film to be then I wrote a synopsis it described the setting the characters of the story the clothes they wore the props and the action or plot of the film The Next Step was to divide each action into Parts this action becomes clearer and more interesting when broken down further into a sequence of individual shots a long shot a close-up shot a medium shot a series of closeups and a return to the long shot as I did this for each part of the action I developed a shooting script when the shooting script was finished I met with my crew and with John our actor to discuss the script and make preparations to start shooting [Music] Bill brought the equipment we made sure we had everything needed to shoot the film first a good camera and lens we used 16 mm equipment but of course the procedures we followed are similar for 8 mm Bill also got a steady tripod so the film would not turn out like [Music] this and a light meter to determine the proper exposure setting so the film wouldn't be Overexposed or underexposed we made sure we knew how to operate the equipment and saw that it was working properly we also had to estimate how much film we would need and we decided to shoot in color The Next Step day bill and I went to the location we looked for interesting places and Bill checked out the lighting conditions we got permission from the owner of a building to shoot from his roof we wanted to be sure we could shoot the film I had written or make any necessary changes in the script before we started shooting we didn't want to waste time so we planned carefully the next day we started shooting Debbie had gone through the shooting script and had grouped together all of the shots to be taken in the same setting regardless of where they came in the script for example we shot the opening sequence at the same time as the closing sequence because they had the same setting we worked as a team each of us was responsible for a specific part of the job my main responsibility as the Director was to be sure that the final film would be what I intended it to be I had to know what I wanted the actors to do and communicate this to them I also had to visualize how each shot would fit into the completed film and I had to be aware of the continuity which would result from putting the different shots together when I planned to cut together two shots of two people from different angles I had to be sure they were on the same side of the screen otherwise I'd get a jump effect I didn't want and when I planned to cut together different shots of the same action a match cut I had to be sure that the action in the closeup was performed the same way as in the medium shot so that the editor would be able to cut the shots together I also took some extra shots I could use if I wanted to cut away from the main action Bill had specific duties too the cameraman has to read the light meter set the lens for proper exposure and focus the lens to obtain a sharp image he has to frame the subject properly and work with the director to decide the best composition for the shot he also has to move the camera to follow the action the cameraman is responsible for putting on film what the director visualizes in his mind Debbie as the script girl had to keep the records of the production she kept track of which scenes had been shot how many takes we made of each shot and which takes were good she also kept a record of the positions and appearance of the actors and props in case we needed to do any retakes finally we took our last shot and sent the film to the laboratory for processing then it was time to start editing Debbie edited the film using basic equipment which included a pair of rewinds a viewer a grease pencil a pair of scissors a splicer and film cement it is the editor's job to arrange the out of sequence shots into the final film according to the director's specifications these May differ a little from the original shooting script because of changes that occurred during shooting many times the editor uses only part of a shot for example take that match cut you saw us shoot here are the two original shot shots the [Music] closeup and the medium [Music] shot and here are the two shots match cut together finally editing can sometimes correct mistakes made in shooting and even with careful planning we made a few like this error in screen [Music] Direction these two shots don't cut together well because John is going in opposite [Music] [Music] directions to solve the problem we used one of the Cutaway shots in between so that's how we made the visual part of our film and now as I promised here's the finished [Music] product [Music] [Music] e [Music] [Music] for [Music] I [Music] I [Music] oh [Music] a [Music] a [Music] oh the rest of the city looks pretty good there seem to be a lot of quiet and plenty of room for the kids to play in there aren't too many parks and swimming pools around my neighborhood the kids are getting a good break at the schools too new buildings equipment books and so on this my school was pretty old I haven't been out of my own neighborhood too much but I guess what impresses me most in other neighborhoods face there's nothing jammed up against anything else and there's lots of room to breathe I guess this city is a pretty good place to live in for most [Music] people [Music] my name is Felicia I'm a junior in high school this is my bedroom where I was born and I've lived here all of my life with my mother and my sister and my brother Pet's the oldest and Peter that type it if you can't have it all of but he doesn't want part of it and so I guess that's why he quit school cuz he thought he could do better on his own he has very high IQ but he's just lazy but I think now he's coming to his senses and he knows it just can't do it without an education Peter and I are only a year apart and then Rosie and I are 3 years aart she's the quietest one she's the one my mother babies the most she's the one we all have to take care I guess we get along pretty well because um we don't fool around with each other that much she goes her way and I go mine she's pretty smart too she got straight A on her last report card she not like me and Peter like homework and stuff I'll let it go till the last minute but she doesn't she comes home and she does it right away now that's something I definitely wouldn't do and Peter definitely wouldn't do my mother is the so supportive family she takes care of us good always worries about us sometimes it gets a little you know you get bugged when she's always telling you do this do do that she's just like any other mother I guess only she's had it a little tougher cuz she's been the only one to take care of us and act like a father and a mother people bring her clothes and material and she makes her dresses she gets money for that and then my neighbor lets her babysit when she goes to work couple of days out weit in the daytime when we're gone to school she does some sewing and then at night after we go to bed she stays up till about 2 or 3:00 she works all the time she wanted to go to college but her father died and he wanted her to go to college but her mother was that kind and thought the daughter's place was at home and all she needed to know was how to cook she just finished high school she didn't have enough education to get a high paying job she wants us all to go to college everything she missed she wants us to have I bet she give her right arm to let us go to collegey a c bye bye of the United States of America and to the Republic for we stand [Music] all right now what we have been given as single problems in textbook all right so the in number n all you want to do is make correction I'd like to go straight from high school right into college I know that with college I'll try to take those type of courses that um I can go into different fields dealing with people I want to go to college because I want to be something that is really helpful to the people something that isn't just what everyone can do and something where I can help my own people you know have to girls more than half of them want to be secretary beauticians or cosmetologist or something like that I guess they've decided that it's no use that time there's no use in them aspiring to become anything else because they won't be allowed to do anything else [Music] all together in all the schools I've attended there's only been about a total of six like kids once I went to um summer school at another high school where I was mostly Caucasian kids they were pretty nice in the classroom but outside it was a different matter you know like we could we got along in the class all right we spoke to each other and borrow pencils and paper and everything and um helped each other in our class work but outside when they got with their friends and I guess the same on our side when we got with ours it was we sort of ignored each other but I think it was more on their part because I used to try to talk to the girl that sat next to me on the outside and she would you know sort of shy away I guess she was ashamed to you know be sing with me or something but I didn't pay too much attention to it all of them seemed a little bit more confident of what they were going to do you know they were going to go to college one girl was going to become an actress and everything and on our side there was sort of an uh you know they were sort of apprehensive about what they were going to do I guess that's because even I was because I really don't know if I'm going to college but they all seem pretty sure of it even the ones that I thought were real you know they all seemed pretty sure that um they were going to college and I just took it for granted that maybe their fathers and mothers had the money that they could make sure they went to some kind of college all these people that talk about Watts they say how dirty it is how filthy it is how much they want to leave all my friends don't want to live here hate to say that they live in Watts I think that's silly they do live in Watts sure everybody wants to get out I don't I think I want to stay here but I don't want to live like I'm living right now but I think that if what is ever going to be anything more than it is it's going to take people who stay here and build it up after all if everybody just starts moving out those that can't move just stay here live like they their mothers and fathers Liv it's not going to do any good I know they need someplace to have those things but they don't have to have them right behind houses how would you like to have a bunch of cars right in your backyard so what if some kids get out there playing and they pile one car too high and it comes Crashing Down and there's no place for it to crash but right into the yards and I think that's dangerous and I don't see why the city allows it to be like [Applause] that those people even if they are living in a in a a rundown neighborhood that still isn't any reason for them have to live with stuff like that right at their back door you live with your mother and you see what your mother has and I guess you figure well if she didn't make it I know I can't so you just give up before you even start I think maybe that's what happened to a lot of the uh adults you know you you see all these men hanging around on the corners all day long doing nothing playing checkers they just don't care anymore perhaps it's too late for the adults but it's not too late for the Young Generation like [Music] myself [Music] I was happy until I realized you know what a what a pain in the neck it was I was sort of horrified I didn't really you know understand what was happening my parents never discussed it with me when I was about 7even my father taught me and my sister oh it's a good cleansing it's the natural purification of the body well it used to bother me when I was a teenager and a young girl and mostly I think it bothered me because people sort of expected it to bother me a lot so it didn't I had cramps and later on um now it it doesn't bother me at all my name is Judy Marston 38 25 36 even though I may look like Miss Universe up until today I had one big problem I repeat I had one big problem I was 15 years old and had never gotten my period even though my mother had told me that women get their periods between the ages of 8 and 17 I was still unhappy that I hadn't gotten mine this morning that all changed my name is Johnny Stanton for me it all started when I went bowling with Judy today I should have known something was different as soon as she got a strike she's usually such a rotten bowler Johny you know is anything different about me today no are you sure you got Rouge on so what's so different about you I got my first period today so what so what it's only the first time I've ever gotten it that's all I'm 15 years old so what's the big deal it means that blood is Flowing out of my my Urus oh what Judy has just told Johnny is the type of oversimplification that can be easily misunderstood especially if you get your information on street corners yes it's true that women have menstrual periods and yes there is outflow of blood from the uterus but what does this mean and why does it happen let's take a closer look as Judy and Johnny learn more about what menstruation means those brownies up put [Music] the [Music] hey kids don't drink all the [Music] milk maybe there's a good movie on yeah maybe are you finished with the [Music] milk nothing much good on oh [Applause] yeah passage way in the body I get it lopian tube is just another passageway in the body right except there are two of them one for each over right now once a month the pituitary gland notifies one egg cell to mature break out of one of the ovaries and travel through the fallopian tube to the uterus if the eggo gets to the uterus without being fertilized the lining of Blood and Tissue there that would house this growing Egg sell is not needed so the egg and the lining disintegrate flow out of the body through the vagina that's called menstruation menr what menstruation what a funny word yes it is but it makes a lot of sense it does sure menstruation comes from the Latin word Menses which means monthly oh yeah why does that make sense because monthly this lining of Blood and Tissue builds up to receive the egg that monthly breaks out of the ovary you mean that every month they not grow there no Lola usually when one egg cell is fertilized the lining won't dissolve and the body doesn't notify the ovaries to release any more eggs I see there's just one thing I don't understand Francine how does the sperm get into the fallopian tube so it can meet the egg well Lola that happens as a result of sexual intercourse when no form of contraception is used then the woman can become pregnant now by using birth control every woman can make her own decision when to have children so unless a woman is pregnant she should get her period every month I don't know Francy you're awful smart Joan Johnson was on the streets today continuing her inquest of hygiene in the city today's topic ministration Joan I'm here on the street stopping people at random asking them their feelings about a very important yet personal subject yeah very much aware when I'm going to get it how um by physical symptoms like what floating um the day before get rather tense and feel irritable belly a night before I get super hungry and compulsively nervous be kind of messy I imagine messy I have big inconvenience I didn't get mine until I was about 14 and I was the last one in the crowd to get and I was also very underdeveloped and small so I felt like a child and I didn't feel like a woman until I got my period I got my period about the time most of my friends were which was 13 and it didn't symbolize anything to me that being a woman was just like another thing to cope with but I generally have terrible cramps or I had terrible cramps I found that if I did exercises that this would kind of ease the cramps you lie back and you raise your legs and just kind of blower them slowly to the ground I flow very heavily and I can use two tampons at once when one napkin wouldn't be effective at all how how do you do it uh well you put they actually fit in side by side and if you put one in and just hold the string and then insert the other one just gently it'll it'll fit in beside it you're really lucky that you can use tampons at this age cuz when I was younger they used to believe that you could only use a tampon if you weren't a virgin but I think most mothers had that idea because tampons haven't been around for that long really well the trouble with this diagram is that it shows a standing figure and I think when you first start starting it's much easier to put one in when you're sitting down because it can go in at a more horizontal angle the hardest thing to do is to find where to put it because the vagina is located in the middle it's not seen on the surface so what you have to do is spread the outer skin apart and maybe even use one of your fingers and feel where the entrance to it is you take the tampon insert the first segment of the applicator you hold on to the rim and then you push this down and then you remove the applicator and you don't have to worry about losing a tampon because the cvex prevents it from going very far so you just should be able to find it with your fingers and sometimes tampons don't come with an applicator just put the tampon itself in maybe even lubricate the tip to make it go in more easily wouldn't you know it I finally get my brother's car to go to the beach and it starts to rain not only that Judy disappears off to her new home the bathroom and I get stuck lugging all this stuff to the [Applause] shelter oh no I can't understand it the weather report said warm and sunny I wanted to go swimming well you can't go swimming you're having your period I can't too just because I'm having my period doesn't mean I have to stop doing everything do you think your period could have caused the rain your name name what number one what is your name number one what is your isolated from The Villages and made to live in menstral huts on the outskirts of the settlements thank you eileene and now on to Mitchell Barker Mitch hi Bob ah number three what were the men afraid of they were afraid that these women possessed evil powers that would sap their vitality and on to Judy maren thank you uh number three who started all these myths and taboos back in matriarchal societies women would make up scary stories so that little boys and men would leave them alone during it number two well women always start everything I am questions to ask we'll have a chance to talk with the contest Mark your ballot prepare to determine who is the real Leslie johnsen [Music] beard now here's a pad that has adhesive on the back of it you see and it sticks to your panties and you don't need a sanitary belt it comes in two sizes regular and miniature here's just a regular Pad but this one is flushable one comes in super and regular [Music] sizes and this kind is narrower and a tapers and it has this discret blue disposable bag that goes with it bright blue is discreet here's a super pad that has a pad within a pad for extra absorbency I think I was more interested in a tampon well we've got cardboard applicators plastic applicators and stick applicators and then there's this kind that has no applicator at all okay I'll take a box for those okay $149 hello what you [Music] doing can I help you sir I don't see what I want I'll um just look around you know that'll be a189 C they're for my mother I didn't think they were for you she I'm sorry we're all out of the large beds uh thank you you're welcome are you going to come to Staten Island and see me play baseball today yeah I guess so Hey listen can we take the fairy well how else are we going to get there I don't know who would have thought it just seven short days ago there I was an innocent dumbbell kid now here I am able to buy sanitary napkins without flinching it's going to be a good game today I can really feel it you feel what good and sick and it couldn't all be from the boat maybe you're getting your period probably hey look there's the Statue of Liberty oh yeah yeah she does man I guess she just bloated yeah you know I think I'm qualified now to do a report on menstruation it happens to everybody except men I would dig it actually it's not a great feeling you can't do nothing with period I think what cause the change of attitude is sort of u a lot of uh what you might call women's Li although I'm not one of the uh um I I'm not a member and I'm not militant about it but the whole attitude toward it has changed I used to use this as an excuse until I realized it wasn't a valid excuse and that there was no reason for it to bother me and I started doing all the things like going swimming and so on I realized nothing happens took the bath even had intercourse and it doesn't nothing bad happened and so as a result of trying all these things and becoming more free and attitude towards it now it doesn't bother me at all this is Johnny Stanton from the Staten Island Ferry Judy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] who lives with you roor Rivas talks about [Music] worms hi nutty boy that Apple sure looks good oh hi R Reas yeah it sure is good while I'm eating an apple but you just dro the Apple in the dirt oh it's still okay nay nay the dirt might have worm eggs in it worm yeah you know those little crawly Oly goly animals but I don't see any worms they are all kinds of worms and sometimes when they are babies you can't see them some worms can grow up and eat corn or leaves you can use others to catch fish with and there are other worms that can live inside your pets and Ste other worms that live inside of people my gosh really sure and when worms live inside your pets your dogs and cats they make them sick what kind of sick they won't eat or play they just mope around and worms can also get inside of boys and girls too and make them feel sick why do they get sick because those worms living inside of boys and girls eat part of the food they eat you mean those peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to eat would feed the worms inside of children that's right this is one of those worms his real name is a Scaris no boy or girl wants to have this worm live with them how can you get rid of those worms and never ever get them again Watch never use the out of doors for a bathroom the bushes in your yard or the dirt under your doorstep is not a bathroom but what does go into the bathroom have to do with words well when those worms are living inside of you they lay eggs little tiny eggs so small you can't see them you could even put 50 eggs on the head of this pen really and when you go to the bathroom these eggs leave the body and can get into the dirt if you use the outdoors for a bathroom see this toy truck now see the dirt on the wheels if we use a very powerful camera we can see those eggs I mentioned that you can't see with your eyes because they are too small oh look you can see the little baby worms inside of the eggs you sure can and remember that these eggs are in the dirt because somebody used the out of doors for a bathroom now if you were to put that dirt in your mouth you would get those eggs inside of you the eggs would hatch and the worms would grow up inside of you how big would they get they would grow to be very big some of those worms would reach 12 in or more that's bigger than I am and those worms aren't one bit nice either look see these baby worms hatching see them coming out of their shell they want to grow and just as you need to breathe so to these worms so they fight and squirm until they punch their way into your lungs oh oh how awful and then they grow and grow reaching one foot in length and sometimes even bigger in about 3 months they lay eggs of their own thousands of them look at this worm laying eggs and these eggs will leave your body with BM are number two when you go to the bathroom and if you don't use your toilet or privy if you use the outer doors for a bathroom then all of those eggs will get into into the dirt and then they can get back into you or anyone else who puts that dirt into his mouth boy I guess I should be more careful with what I put into my mouth you sure should you should always wash your hands before you touch anything that you put into your mouth remember anytime you put dirty fingers or anything that's dirty into your mouth you may also be putting in these tiny worms and these eggs can live in the dirt for a long long time all summer all winter long even for several years so even an egg 2 or 3 years old might still grow inside of me it sure would it would use part of your food that you eat and need to grow strong and big boys and girls need the food for themselves they can't afford to share it with any worms living inside of them I like food fruits vegetables meat and milk M food tastes good it helps me to grow strong bones and I feel full of energy but I don't want worms I want to keep all of the food I eat I want to feel healthy not tired of sick that's fine but if you want to stay healthy you must remember your good health habits always use your toilet or privy never use the yard or a bush for a bathroom and always wash your hands after you use it toilet and before you eat anything don't put hands fingers sticks or anything with dirt only into your mouth dirt might have worm eggs in it anything else sure keep yourself clean eat the right foods and do what your teacher and nurse tell you to do listen to your teacher and the school nurse they will help you and your parents to stay healthy and keep from getting wormed inside of you and what about that Apple I'm going to wash it right now I don't want any egg hatching inside of me no sir I'm going wash it there goes a pretty smart squirrel
