do do do so so so so hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films that was a pathogram uh news digest pathe was a french film company but um they uh also did things like um news uh news digest or news um newsreels um they also made film like 9.5 millimeter was a pafe uh format um i think they also did some other stuff too uh related to other formats like a weird 3.75 format which um i saw at a film conference which was not very popular um anyways that came from the mogul brothers collection and which was uh in new york city and then part of that collection ended up in pittsburgh at the oregon archives so there it is uh let's watch a film about the panama canal enjoy these massive gates of one of the most vital trade highways in the world open many times each day for cargo ships of all nations thousands of ships carrying over 45 million tons of cargo pass through this area each year saving thousands of miles and hundreds of hours on their sea journeys for this is part of the panama canal which connects two great oceans the canal is 50 miles long 50 miles of complex man-made waterway supervised from buildings like this by skilled men some handle the intricate controls that operate the canal machinery others supervise the ship traffic for centuries men dreamed of a panama canal uniting the atlantic and pacific oceans in the 1500s spain dreamed of linking her many new world colonies by joining the oceans ships might sail from ocean to ocean without making the long voyage around cape horn the place to build a water passage or canal seemed to be across the narrow isthmus of panama but all spanish attempts failed there remained only one way to ship goods by water from east to west around cape horn a long trip of three to nine months in the eighteen hundreds the united states began to grow people by the thousands moved westward but the trip overland from east to west was dangerous and often took over three months to shorten this journey american businessmen built a railroad to carry passengers and goods across the isthmus of panama to waiting ships but a canal would be a better way of crossing the isthmus in 1881 ferdinand de lesseps the great french engineer attempted to overcome the problems of building a panama canal the mountains of central panama were the main block in the path of the proposed canal de lesseps french company planned to cut through this blockade but the plan could not be carried out besides the mountains there was the jungle with its dread diseases dense vegetation and stifling heat and humidity here drinking water turned bad and food rotted forty thousand workmen died in the french effort to build the canal the french attempt was carefully watched by the united states in the early nineteen hundreds this country realized that its growing naval and merchant fleets had to be moved easily from ocean to ocean meeting here in panama city the government of panama gave the united states permission to build the canal and to use occupy and control a 10 mile wide strip of land called the canal zone these historic films of the canal zone show how hundreds of workers who came by train loads built the canal large areas of jungle brush were cleared away mountains of rock were drilled and blasted away to make place for the canal huge steam shovels cleared gigantic piles of rubble moved thousands of tons of blasted rock thus the americans moved the mountains of panama to make way for the canal much of this work was supervised by george washington goethals a united states army engineer also important was the contribution of dr william gorgas who directed the successful fight in overcoming health and sanitation problems dr gorgas had pools and swamps drained to destroy the mosquitoes that carried deadly yellow fever the work continued by 1907 tons of concrete were being mixed and poured as the canal slowly took shape finally after seven years of intensive work american engineers completed the great task of building the canal in 1915 the first cargo ships went through the canal the waters of the atlantic and pacific oceans had been joined today the panama canal remains a vital link for sea travel between two great oceans this ship is in one of the locks or steps that make up the canal by speeding the camera action we can see how the locks are operated small heavy duty locomotives tow the ships into the locks once the ship has entered the gates of the locks are closed the lock is now filled with water as the water level rises the ship is raised to the water level of the next lock this is only one of six locks that make up the panama canal three joining locks raise ships from the sea level of one ocean to a height of eighty five feet at this point ships sail across gotton lake an artificial lake across the highest parts of central panama another series of locks lowers ships to the sea level of the opposite ocean the panama canal is such a time saver that ships of many nations can always be seen at its entrances this is the pacific ocean entrance though we live in an air age seed transportation continues because it is economical by using the canal seed transport costs are kept to a minimum this ship from tokyo japan for instance will save over 5500 miles and 20-day sailing time on its way to new orleans to pass through the canal each ship is charged a fee according to size and amount of cargo a civilian canal zone pilot is making arrangements to guide this ship the hyberus through the canal let's go along from the pacific entrance of the canal we see panama city it has thrived on the business of the canal panama city is a growing center of trade and industry near panama city and at other points along the canal are the neat pleasant homes belonging to the families of united states canal zone workers and officials now we are starting our eight-hour trip to the atlantic as we enter the first lock the ship's tow lines are attached to electric locomotives the locomotives pull our ship farther into the lock the lock gates close in the control room an engineer operates the machinery that floods the lock of the thirty four hundred employees of the panama canal company more than three thousand are united states citizens the united states alone is responsible for the operation of the canal open to ships of all nations continuing toward the atlantic we see the ship world traveler which reminds us that ships go both ways through the canal in the next lock we see a large ship of the united states navy the panama canal is strategically important in moving american naval vessels from ocean to ocean after being lifted by three locks we sail between the massive rock walls of gallard cut these mountains are part of the continental divide the highest point through which the canal is cut as we move toward the atlantic the canal widens into gatun lake this is an artificial lake created in the valleys of the mountains of central panama there's often a traffic problem on the lake as ships line up to be admitted into the atlantic locks of the canal the lake itself is backed up by huge gatun dam this dam is used to store water for filling some of the locks it is also the source of hydroelectric power that operates the locks on the atlantic side of the canal largest of these atlantic side locks are the gatun locks these are the last locks on our canal trip toward the atlantic ocean in the distance we can see the city of cologne another of the panama cities developing along the canal passing cologne and entering the waters of the atlantic ends our trip through the panama canal this is the canal that joins the oceans and increases the exchange of goods and the friendly relations between nations this is the panama canal vital link in the commerce of our world oh yeah pretty great um you know that's a classic coordinate film uh with some information it sucks for the people in panama i'm sure being these the most narrow in all of the the two continents um they're like ooh we want to divide your country in half and uh it's going to be great and we're going to run it the united states is going to run it and you guys are just going to be there so uh behind me is a film scanner and i have a film set up uh and this one features rodents um so let me actually change the name of this to ham comes to the river bank enjoy [Music] so [Music] it was early morning and already the animals were a stir in every tree in bush see that's mr raccoon on his way down and search for some breakfast and mr squirrel nibbling at his first meal of the day but some animals like children are sleepy heads and that particular morning mr hamster just couldn't wake up sharp at seven o'clock the alarm went off with a wear and a rattle and a tinkle that must have been heard for miles around slowly the den began to push away the clouds of sleep and by the time the clock was nearly shaken to pieces hammy was awake drowsy but awake with a heavy tumbled out of bed and made his way downstairs oh what a terrible sight it was the whitewash hadn't been put away the sink cluttered with dirty dishes and the rubbish still in the bin he was ashamed of himself for not having cleared up the night before and he rushed out of the house the fresh morning air made him feel a lot better so he decided to take a little walk it was his first exploration since he had come to the neighborhood and everything was new and exciting good morning call the raccoon oh good morning returned hammy politely a good morning oh good morning mr rabbit and he walked on timidly as one by one the inspected their new neighbor good morning how oh what a wonderful day he thought hamster as he walked on you know i i think i'm going to like this place oh hello flowers hello flowers oh good morning mr d and then and uh where do you think you're off to poor hammy he he just couldn't get a word out uh well speak up i won't eat you what's your name but uh hammy sir i i lost i suppose best thing you can do is to find your friends that please sir i i haven't got any sticks oh now you go up the bank a little way and you'll find mr white rat's house uh he's just the man for you and that was how hammy first ran into the wise old frog a frog was well known for his friendly help and sound advice now feeling much more confident hammy decided to do as he suggested so away he went in search of mr white rat suny came to a little hill and he scrambled up to the top and he looked over and he goggled with excitement for across the river was a smart little house with a brand new boat moored outside it must be the house mr frog meant and sure enough it was hello there called mr rat oh hello hammy shouted back out here aren't you yes that's right i i moved in yesterday mr rat started to get into his boat and asked would you like to come fishing oh yes yes please said the hamster fine i'll come over and pick you up said the rat and without further ado he untied his boat and steered his craft across [Applause] as soon as the boat came alongside they made their formal greetings nice to know you said the rat uh my friends call me roderick well my name's hammy the hamster returned charlie well that's the introductions out of the way last roderick oh welcome to my ship away the two animals went on their fishing expedition now to tell the truth hammy was a bit nervous he was always that way on meeting somebody for the first time and the rat seemed so terribly important but sunni forgot all that in his excitement the riverbank seemed to flash by how fast they were going what more could a hamster want a glorious summer day a fresh breeze tickling his whiskers and a ride in the finest boat he had ever seen what a lucky hamster he was you know considering how untidy he had left his house he really didn't deserve all this roderick brought the boat briskly alongside and made fast oh honey could scarcely wait to land and explore [Music] his ramble didn't last long because roderick had a job for him to do and fetched him back and although although he was a little clumsy at first all went well [Applause] roderick couldn't have arranged a more lavish spread if he had known he was going to meet hammy and entertain him the rat watched with a smile as hammy sampled all the good things but he himself wasn't at all hungry as a hamster months deadly he kept discovering fresh delicacies oh it was all too good to be true oh come on hammy we're taking none of this back you know well hammy needed no second bidding he set two again with a will and it wasn't long before every scrap had disappeared well done said roderick and began delicately cleaning his whiskers oh hemi saw that he was in well-bred company and hastily did the same hello what would you like to do now hammy oh bradley i i'm so full i can hardly move broderick laughed and laughed i know and so the rat who was a great fisherman started to unload his tackle first the rod then the line oh what a struggle it was but soon all was ready and the rat sat down to wait water flies and other insects were busy on the water as it flowed cool and clear their drowsy humming lulled the rat on the bank until his head began to nod soon the heat of the sun and the humming of the insects was too much for him and he fell fast asleep then while he was dozing mrs duck came past with her mischievous brute rodery didn't even hmm [Music] so bubbling with excitement he darted at the line and made off jerking roderick out of his lumbers oh what a tug of war it was first the ducklings then the rights on and on went to struggle until at last roderick pulled the duckling ashore oh you'll naughty ducklings use naughty naughty duck drinks look what you've done to mr rat's line nothing out of it this is drink nothing [Applause] have you heard the latest news no no what is it well it seems that there's a stranger in the neighborhood what sort of a stranger oh it's a fearsome animal so they say i was just taking my ducklings home to safety cracked the duck and very wise too just then one of the ducklings gets skittering up shouting hail hell the stranger here the strangers here oh nonsense child said mrs duck yes he is a big wild animal there behind the bush roderick moved to investigate the bush and found a pair of large round eyes peering out at him mrs duck watched intently as with great caution roderick approached the bush while the eyes followed his every movement finally he challenged the intruder who's there oh come on now who are you uh i could take care mr rat but it was too late roderick had already grasped the bush and thrown it aside and who do you think it was the hamster oh my i never know my i don't know i wow suffering cheese rinds what do you think you're up to well rotary the ducks you see it see uh it's the first time i've ever seen that doc in all my life do you have it you oh you he means you haven't at this mrs duck burst out laughing and the ducklings with it it seems as if they'd never stop as for hammy he was not amused however time was getting on and there was supper to prepare for the family so mrs duck collected her brood and awfully waddled still laughing over the hamster that had never seen a duck [Applause] [Music] ah ah once indoors they both talk drowsily in front of the fire until at long last hammy fell fast asleep and roderick his newfound friend took him up to bed to dream of many happy days along the riverbank [Music] lee uh this is canadian uh this is very popular or was very popular in canada i remember showing this film just randomly to a friend of mine who was canadian and she went nuts she was like oh my gosh she had only seen color uh episodes and to know that there were black and white ones were really really phenomenal for her so uh let's watch ghost towns of the pikes peak enjoy [Music] so no relics so completely symbolize colorado's glamorous past as the ghost towns of pikes peak the old mining camps tucked away in the rock-ribbed valleys of the great divide this region under the shadow of pikes peak was long pasture womack was called crazy bob when he built this cabin and set out to search the steep slopes crazy bob dug so many holes in the side of the mountain people said if you want to find womack just follow his holes he'll be in the last one finally many years later in poverty gulch he struck it rich with his discovery of the famous gold king mine specimen ore from the load ran a hundred and forty dollars to the tongue and to celebrate his luck womack went on a roaring drunk in the temperance town of colorado springs before he sobered up womack had sold the gold king for five hundred dollars eventually the deep shaft of the mine produced over six million dollars making womacks the most expensive spree in history [Music] around the site of the gold king the town of creek burst into existence named for a forgotten cowboy who broke his arm while chasing steers through the canyons creek was the last great gold strike in the united states two months after the rush started a population of five thousand men and seven women sprang up in what was called the million dollar cow pasture buildings were thrown together to provide shelter from the mountain cold and 50 to 75 miners would crowd together in one of these buildings often paying five dollars a piece for sleeping space on the floor pike's peak or bus became the battle cry and the words crippled creek and gold soon became just as famous a vacationing school teacher staked a pile of rocks in which he found a pair of elkhorns he gave a half interest in the elkton to two grocers in settlement of a thirty dollar bill all three became wealthy when a 13 million dollar vein was discovered under the old elkhorns the old stores made fortunes selling mining equipment at fantastic prices to the new wave of gold mad tender feet who stormed into the basin [Music] everyone expected to become rich overnight and gold was everywhere jones and miller two drug us hurried in from colorado springs all the land looked alike to them so jones threw up his hat saying we'll dig where it lands they staked the claim and named their mind the pharmacist the druggists recovered over a million dollars each from the pharmacist mine [Music] the crescent duke thought to be worthless by its owners was unloaded on a group of iowa farmers the farmers hired a brilliant young mining engineer named roloffs to sink a shaft at 1200 feet the famous crescent bug was discovered a pocket of gold in its purest natural form the strike was so valuable a bank door of solid steel was put on the mouth of the shaft at its peak creek became a teeming city of over 50 000 people all dependent on the treasure that poured from the 5 000 mines dotting the old cow pasture life in the camp was hectic and dangerous especially on saturday night shooting scrapes were so common an enterprising undertaker offered cut rates for funerals providing the killings occurred on saturday night but sunday brought a comparative love to the camp the miners and their wives promenated down the avenues the women dressed in the latest paris fashions while the men were the frock coats of the period by far the most famous of creek's bonanza kings was winfield scott stratton whose daughter gene stratton porter became a world famous novelist unlike many of the new millionaires stratton stayed in crippled creek and built his home where he could look out over his great minds stratton had struggled for years as a carpenter and part-time prospector before making his great strike on the 4th of july 1891. in honor of the day he named his mind the independence from the independence came the gold for stratton's many generosities and eccentricities on one occasion he bought a bicycle for every waitress and laundry girl in colorado springs so they could ride to work fire the great enemy of the mining camps never ravaged the basin when the alarm rang out matched white horses pulling the engine galloped from the fire station to battle the roaring flames the basin proudly boasted three railroads on one florence and crippled creek business was so profitable it paid for itself in the first seven months a young negro named jack johnson who later gained fame as the heavyweight champion of the world worked as a porter in this depot [Music] these old houses on the outskirts of town were the homes of the more respectable element of creek the family men small mine owners and mine superintendents who brought their wives and children to the basin across town the wild and wooly element made their headquarters at the mozart saloon here a young miner fought a bloody battle for a 50 purse and gave great promises a young heavyweight his name was bob fitzsimmons gentleman jim corbett and jim jeffries also gave exhibitions in the old gymnasium [Music] creek's chief rival in the basin was the town of victor the scene of some fabulous strikes rich minds like the molly kathleen the cod hiawatha and red umbrella with the important strikes of this district [Music] it could truly be said that the straits of victor were paved with gold for low-grade ore was used as the paving material once when the streets were torn up to supply new sewers for the business district old-timers panned five thousand dollars from the pavement in one block the gold coin mine in the center of town one of the richest surface mines in the district was discovered while some easterners were excavating for a hotel basement the idea of a hotel was quickly abandoned and the cellar was deepened to become the shaft of the mine the brokerage houses of victor handled much of the speculation in mining stocks the mighty portland mine of victor the richest mine in the entire basin and probably one of the richest gold strikes in the entire world was discovered on a claim only 70 feet long by 40 feet wide this small plot less than the size of the average city lot was the center of an incredible deposit of 65 million dollars in bright and shining gold the oar cages dipped deep into the side of the mountain to bring out the treasure each cart load adding to the fabulous fortune of the two irish teamsters who staked the portland the peaceful city hall at victor once served as a fortress during the savage labor wars that tore the basin these clashes between the mine owners and strikers often reached the scale of small wars with hundreds of armed men on either side federal troops placed cannon and gatling guns in the streets to maintain order near bull hill station is the site of the fort built by the strikers under the shadow of pikes peak is the 12 million dollar isabella mine seen of a phenomenal strike of metallic gold one small shipment of raw ore sold for 219 000 and every shovel full of the ore was worth between 3 and four hundred dollars a record never equaled in mining history only one remaining house marks the site of the town of altman once a thriving community of three thousand altman was built in an elevation of over two miles above sea level and was proudly claimed to be the highest incorporated town in the united states [Music] most of the mines of the basin have now been exhausted and with the death of the mines the towns have been abandoned only a few dozen ramshackle framed buildings remain in goldfield once the shipping hub of the basin over 300 million dollars worth of bullion was shipped from the goldfield depots at the height of the boom fittingly enough the jail is the best preserved structure in anaconda once the toughest town in the basin the scene of many gun battles and riots and proud of its reputation anaconda was a town of small miners who fought hard for their gold gone with the great strikes the bonanzas and el dorados is the romance of the early boom days great corporations employing the most modern methods have replaced the prospector men can no longer dream of achieving the fortunes made by the early millionaires to the younger generation the work is merely a job to their fathers it was high adventure holding a promise of wealth and independence the great strikes have gone the way of history vanishing with the open frontier but they have left behind the stories of carpenters and school teachers teamsters and cowboys who by sheer courage and determination defeated the mountains and won a half billion dollars in bright and shining gold the story of their lives is the story of creek basin the richest square mile in history the greatest gold camp on earth [Music] so uh people caught it it's a symbol maservy uh the company that did a date with your family and did um some other etiquette films and films about coca-cola and this is a series so i've actually shown um ghost towns i showed another ghost towns uh film back in the day ghost towns um of the gold road so um this was i guess they toured around and did this and they packaged it for tv actually so someone mentioned that the pbs they saw it on a pbs channel or something similar to it um yeah this was the idea well um speaking of gold here's another sponsored industrial film a golden harvest enjoy [Music] here you will see the highlights of conflict a war that has been fought in many forms since man first stirred the earth with a pointed stick today this fight this struggle for food is going through an entirely new phase but the adversaries are still the same man is still drawn up against the blighting forces of nature great gains have been made in this eternal battle on the farmlands of america crop rotation now conserves moisture and topsoil science has given us better seeds has helped us to enrich our soil with more effective fertilizers has improved our control over weeds and over insects yields have greatly increased during the past two decades and the harvest time has been sharply reduced harvest labor with efficient machinery has been reduced to one tenth of what it used to take and the harvest is now completed in days rather than spread over many months of summer and fall but to twist an old proverb it's a very good wind that blows no ill for in the midst of all these advances man has dropped his guard and nature has once again moved in to interrupt our march toward complete freedom from hunger the harvesting of larger crops within a comparatively short period of time presents a new problem each crop be it wheat other small grains or soybeans now pours from the field in a literal flood and the river banks of normal distribution are far too narrow to hold them the trickle of a few years ago has swollen into a torrent which now smashes against the bottleneck of local elevators once could process and ship grains as fast as they arrived but today the receipts are not only far too great shipping is also by shortages of boxcars local storage space is soon jammed to the roof and with too few box cars to relieve the pressure no more space may be available for days or even weeks which way can the farmer turn to save his crop which is now a glut on the market if he's lucky he may find that a distant elevator or warehouse is not yet filled there he can either sell his crop right away or store it until the glut is over in either case his returns immediately drop between 10 and 25 cents a bushel the cost of hauling perhaps he decides to store his crop in that distant elevator until the market has risen above the glut price but regardless of where he stores it his cost will increase at least an additional 5 to 15 cents to pay for that storage or if he decides to sell immediately he will probably have to sell at a discount from the already depressed market price which usually comes at harvest time some farmers follow one of these income reducing courses while others in desperate hope store their crops in makeshift buildings on the farm they gamble on the market rising or space becoming available in the elevator before weather rats and birds can chisel too deeply into their returns but leave the grain just a little too long in this kind of storage and in addition to those losses there will be still another the crop will take a lower grading when it's finally marketed still more desperate is the farmer's plight when he's forced to store his crop on the open ground for here spoilage can cause a loss of between five and fifteen percent with a heavy dockage on the grain that's left and grain stored in this way is not eligible for a government price support loan in spite of and because of the great strides made by modern agriculture tens of thousands of grain farmers are caught each year in this tight squeeze between bumper crops and inadequate storage facilities they are modern in every other respect they use the most efficient equipment and follow the most effective scientific methods but even where these glut conditions do not occur farmers are losing a large portion of their income by sheer lack of control over the marketing of their crops alarmed by these heavy losses in both farm prosperity and badly needed grain the department of agriculture has repeatedly suggested a solution to the problem for top benefits the department says farmers must have facilities for storing grain a year or more on the farm requirements for such a storage unit have been specifically detailed by the department all bins must meet these requirements otherwise there may be damage or even total loss of the grain and storage and here are the government's requirements the storage unit must hold the grain without loss of quantity must exclude rain snow and ground moisture must permit effective fumigation to control insects must provide reasonable safety from fire and wind damage and when the grain is to be sealed as security for a price support loan the storage unit must have sufficient headroom for inspection and obtaining probe samples must be constructed so that it requires forcible braking to be entered after sealing and among other important features listed in this bulletin reasonable cost permanence and low upkeep expense and convenience of filling and empty thousands upon thousands of grain farmers are today using the building which meets all these requirements are protecting their profits by complete control of their marketing with an on the farm storage unit as modern as the other tools which have helped to make american farmers the most prosperous in the history of the world this is the all steel concept the complete answer to a serious problem the building that meets all the requirements for efficient on the farm storage it permits effective fumigation to control insects it's built to keep out rain and ground moisture even in humid tropical areas in 70 mile gales these buildings stand with a strength of steel and wherever quonsets are used highly resistant to the hazards of fire quanset buildings completely meet the government's basic requirements meet also the requirements when grain is sealed for a price support loan there's plenty of head room for inspection and for getting probe samples and of course the all steel construction would require forcible braking to enter this building after the grain is sealed and added to all those income protecting advantages a great convenience strongly recommended by the department of agriculture the labor-saving time-saving convenience of easy filling the labor-saving time saving convenience of easy emptying permanence too is considered highly important and permanence is a built-in feature of all steel quonset buildings hundreds of products of the highest quality are today made of steel have reached new heights of durability because they are made of steel and to the obvious advantages of this material strand steel has added one of the greatest advances ever made in the history of building the invention which makes it possible to nail steel to steel making full use of one of the sturdiest materials known to the building industry and this covering goes on to stay because the nails driving into the jaws of the nailing grooves are deformed and clinched this creates holding power far greater than that possible with ordinary building materials gives quonset an almost unbelievable high degree of permanence to long life add the further advantage of low upkeep expense for quantities are easy and economical to maintain this is a building of which you can remain proud over the years with minimum effort and cost to keep its appearance bright and fresh quan coat a special paint developed for use on galvanized steel is available in five sparkling colors white green gray cream and red one or more of these will match the other buildings on your farm will keep your quonset colorful with very little attention quonset buildings of all types are designed throughout for low maintenance expense for rugged long life in those two respects alone quonset meets the final recommendation reasonable cost but the quonset system of small grain storage goes far beyond those basic necessities to present a truly profit-making investment with this cooling tunnel you gain great additional advantages for now you can store your crops in either bins or bulk with a much greater assurance against the threat of spoilage normally warm air rises through the drain to cause crusting or to encourage the rapid increase of insects but when the cooling tunnel fan is turned on the natural circulation is changed to draw out the warm air to reduce the interior temperature of the grain with lower temperatures the surface of the grain is kept practically free from crust forming mold and insects are held to a minimum much less fumigation is needed when you have a quonset cooling tunnel and the laborious time consuming job of turning grain to prevent serious crust damage is practically eliminated quonset buildings perform with maximum efficiency when they are used for the storage of small grain but their usefulness extends still further four in planning a new building it is desirable in many cases to consider the possibility of converting it to use for two or more different purposes this recommendation is made for several reasons if you don't need the
