foreign hi everybody I'm skip bellzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show let me mute this computer uh we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was Uber fall which I think is uh translated to accident uh it was 1928 um German film before uh Nazis came to power um definitely got have some surrealist uh influences really and even the the titles are part of that German expressionist kind of feel um and a cursed coin pretty great uh so today's six boxes showed up so that's um anywhere between 30 and 50 films that just showed up um an embarrassment of riches uh and so I got a box yesterday and I immediately pulled the film front uh and I have it set up on the I'm all discombobulated on the film scanner so we're gonna go ahead and watch this don't be afraid [Music] the world is passing right beside you going faster all the time shouting songs [Music] there's so much left to do what the day becomes more true better find life's place for you and get it all you the nature of the problem really all of us are young in this life We've Just Begun so forget the numbers meet me once all God's promises are clear so instead of standing here let's get it all foreign God is in the world God loves the world and has reconciled the world to himself in Christ all people need to know be salt Delight be a servant touch and taste life love in Jesus name don't be afraid don't be afraid you're a person you're someone you're a beautiful you and the world in which you're living is so beautiful don't be your praise [Music] please let me see all the feelings inside you that are trying to live try to share something with me you've got so much to give [Music] be afraid [Music] of praise the call to the church today is don't be afraid don't be afraid of electric speed don't be afraid of new subcultures among the Young [Music] don't be afraid of new songs and the search for a new lifestyle [Music] don't be afraid of protest don't be afraid of change of new ideas of dialogue with the young of talking and working together as equal brothers and sisters my biggest problem is that my parents they're too picky they you keep following more and more of the rules and then pretty soon they start picking at things that just aren't important when you look at life my family's just the opposite they aren't picky enough there's no exact time to be home or if you don't do something well find somebody else will do it I think the whole problem with my parents is a complete lack of understanding between both of us I guess it makes you so mad you know because they don't think you have any brains in your head or anything that's a problem I think it takes a lot of guts to be a parent I'll be probably getting married in about two years and I'm scared because I don't really want to be your parents youth today is engaged in a search and struggle for identity am I really and where do I fit in and who and where is God listen to them and don't be afraid sometimes I just want to sit down I want to say hey I want to go up into the mountains I want to find a cave I want to be a Hermit for the rest of my life and a ditch Society because I'm afraid of it everyone seems to be pushing you all of a sudden gotta find out what you want to be what you want to do where you want to go to college if you want to go at all I just don't know I sit back and everything seems to be in a hurricane I just don't know what I want to do my biggest problem is discipline in my mind to do the things that I know I should do you know I have the right desires and I just don't have the action it is the thing to do to go to college but then the goal that I really wanted in life is to really get married and to have a family that to me is about one of the neatest things in life you know I want to have my goal now and like have what I want now and have everything have success and the whole deal now instead of waiting like the 15 years or whatever it takes to get to the top right now the thing that really scares me most is that I'm not going to be able to achieve my goal in my career in nursing I have so many doubts that I'll never make it and I feel like I'd let myself down if I couldn't make it you're supposed to not worry about tomorrow you know lift each day by day but you always worry about tomorrow Ministry is people meaning something to each other in Christ Ministry is largely a matter of self-identity identity is found in community as we relate to one another in the church Community is the fellowship of God's family and that includes both adults and youth but do we in the church live together in the liberating power of the Gospel are youth able to grow in the spirit to the potential of their calling in Christ Jesus or has our church life become programmed programs to program people manipulation of persons rigid control systems listen to what youth say about the church and don't be afraid here lies the church Within These climbing walls there cries the world but the dead don't hear at all the steps that we try are those etched in stone the voices and the Echoes here are no ones but are wrong isn't anybody listening doesn't anybody care when the doors are all thrown open who is there [Music] here move the lips that sing the same old songs where are the hands that move to right the wrongs The Hungry Mouse go empty and the full ones are all fair doesn't anyone remember what it was that Jesus said isn't anybody listening doesn't anybody care when the doors are all thrown open who is there therefore the words that soon return to dust is this building merely Shield us from the worldly oppressing pain or do we leave alive and freeze or meet the world again isn't anybody listening doesn't anybody care when the doors are all thrown open while we there [Music] youth are hungry for Meaningful worship but in worship the youth are looking for informal settings discussions and interpersonal sharing youth want the gospel to come alive to their lives by sharing in worship as an expression of Christian Fellowship [Music] please let me in I'm a person I'm someone let me share life with you there are things for the doing that both of us can do we are free [Music] of praise Ministry is people meaning something to each other in Christ and loving listening helping relating sharing so that saying the gospel and doing the gospel happen at the same time don't be afraid to let it happen [Music] um Mr Carter this has been really interesting today but I kind of want to say my opinion because I mean yours is nice and everything but I just um kind of disagree a little don't you think that we should maybe discuss things more instead of just listen you talk to us and you know get in conversations and read some of the stuff out of the Bible ourselves and get our own points of view in there instead of just listen to what you have to say um Mr Carter we love you but there's no way for us you know for you to know that we love you you know because you always talk to us and look at us like we're stupid and little kids like we want to talk sometimes and get involved that's what I come here for is to get involved not to be lectured at I can't tell you anything and I can't get involved with you because you just you're just standing up there you're not you're not doing anything for us Mr Carter don't you think that a big hang of today is communication for communication occur you need a conversation before a conversation occurs you need two or more people don't you think we lack one person somehow we should get that person back so we can talk to each other communicate and therefore maybe love each other more [Music] I want you to reach out I'll reach out and return we've got so much to share we've got so much to learn no no way of praise [Music] adults need to care about youth affirm them adults and youth need to enjoy one another be happy together to have a celebration we all need opportunities to celebrate together the goodness of God the victory of Christ the meaning of Christian love this is the perfect generation to begin the celebration for God's loving Revelation is a lie for everyone in the face of greed and hate this time of poverty when God calls men to live out love is you he calls on me this is the perfect generation to begin the celebration for God's loving Revelation is alive for everyone [Music] peace and victory for God has made on mankind one and we are truly free this is the perfect generation to begin the celebration of God's loving Revelation is a lie for everyone [Music] is the Lord [Music] foreign [Music] do all things murmuring and disputing don't be afraid of change share Place power and decision allow for failure be ready to forgive Ministry is people Youth and adult meaning something to each other in Christ so that saying the gospel and doing the gospel happen at the same time don't be afraid to let it happen yeah youth need real issues to explore youth want and need to be heard to participate and be involved to feel alive care youth want to do something concrete for others [Music] the time has come to join our hands in peace and victory for God is free this is [Music] together we are Christ's Church in the world his servants we need each other and together we have a big job to do but don't be afraid God is in the 70s and Christ will win don't be afraid [Applause] live life [Music] be free [Music] if you could be a bird you wouldn't soar as high as you can know yes you you can fly so why hang around live life live it now be real be free live life be real be free [Music] the peace of God is free it teaches us to fly to live our lives in tea or God brings Joy live life live it now be real be free live life living now lyrics be free [Music] grab life in big hands full of knowing you can do the things that you want so very much to do and be as free as you dream [Music] be free [Music] holy cow film uh and maybe I misheard it I quoted it in the comments but Christ is in the 70s and God is going to win it's like you know at first I thought this was about like hey older Christians don't be afraid of the younger Christians uh they they might listen to different types of music but they still you know you still can relate to them but that line tells me that there were a lot of Protestants who were scared super scared of what was happening in the early 70s that they felt like culturally uh they were losing but no crisis in the 70s and God is going to win wow so this is why I collect films is because this is actually this is specifically made for a niche audience and at a specific period in time 1971 and uh holy cow yeah anyways so I'm gonna I'm gonna definitely mark this as something that's gonna um we're gonna have to use at least one of the songs the the song that does not end uh snip it down to something for the toe tapping tournament uh 2024. um in the meantime um let me change the name of this I believe this is Eisenhower in this film freedom is indivisible enjoy [Music] thank you thank you recently at Columbia University while human freedom is still being challenged abroad a peaceful reaffirmation of America's fate took place when people from all walks of life mingle with the world's major Educators in witnessing the inauguration of a new University president former supreme commander of the Allied Forces in Europe Dwight D Eisenhower saw Admirals Leahy and Halsey and a multitude of other dignitaries from every Department of our national life assembled to honor his investiture together with its own family [Music] right David Eisenhower I now offend you copies of our Charter under the times of which I charge you to administer the Affairs of this University and in doing so to provide leadership for our staff and students in the pursuit of Education in the advancement of knowledge [Applause] [Applause] today's challenge to freedom and to every free institution is such that none of us DARE stand alone for human freedom is today threatened by regimented statism the threat is infinitely more specific than that involved in mere adherence to opposing ideologies men of widely Divergent views in our own country living peace together because they share certain common aspirations which are more important to them than their differences but democracy and the police state have no common purposes methods or aspirations in today's struggle no free man no free institution can be neutral all must be joined in a common profession that of democratic citizenship every institution within our national structure must contribute to the advancement of this profession all artery strikes the right of free speech free worship ownership of property equality before the law all these are mutually dependent for their existence thus when shallow critics denounce the prophet motive inherent in our system of private Enterprise they ignore the fact that it is an economic support of every human right we possess and that without it All rights would soon disappear love of freedom confidence in Cooperative effort optimism faith in the American way will live so long as our school loyally devote themselves to a truly liberal education to assign the university the mission of ever strengthening the foundations of our culture is to ennoble the institution and confirm the vital importance of its service there will be no administrative suppression or Distortion of any subject that merits a place in the universe in this University's curriculum the facts of Communism for example shall be taught here its ideological development its political methods its economic effects its probable course in the future the truth about communism is today and indispensable requirement if the True Values of our democratic system are to be properly assessed ignorance of communism fascism or any other police state philosophy is far more dangerous than ignorance of the most virulent disease the truth is what we need the full truth except for those few who may be using the doctrine of Communism as a vehicle to personal power the people who in our country accept communism's propaganda for truth are those most ignorant of its aims and practices Enlightenment is not only a defender of our institutions it is an aggressive Force for the defeat of false ideologies oh Fortnight after the inauguration of Colombia's new president advertising and public relations Executives from All Over America assembled at the 39th Annual Meeting of the association of national advertisers at the hotel Waldorf Astoria New York for a special conference on education through advertising the speaker introduced by President Paul West of the Ana was President Eisenhower of Columbia University here speaks a mighty voice a voice distill the confusion of thought and to inspire all groups to sink their minor differences and get on with the job of preserving our Priceless freedom here indeed is a living symbol of the individuality of Freedom itself General Eisenhower the number one soldier citizen of America [Applause] Mr West Joe of course the one of the disadvantages of such a glowing introduction is almost a resulting feeling of Terror on the part of its recipient because he realizes that nothing he can say or do will equal as a promise but such an introduction implies I have the feeling though that there is no subject in the world so fascinating to talk about as America America is of course a soul a diverse in its activity in his daily life we have people living in the mountains and plains making their living by fishing on the Seacoast delving in the mind so farming the ground working in fact Foods doing everything that needs to be done that this complex mechanism that is American industry can continue to function there has been underlying all of these of vastnesses in both geography and in function which of themselves would tend to make us divisive and to pull us apart there has been a spiritual Unity existing even long before the Deckers the signing of the Declaration of Independence spiritual Unity born out of the belief that man is a dignified human being created in the image of his maker and by that fact the possessor of certain inalienable rights we call them and we usually refer to this group of Rights and privileges as represented in our Bill of Rights in the first 10 amendments to the Constitution and I think that the first thing we should realize is that all of those rights are a bundle remove one and all the others must have necessity fall and the one that seems to have come under attack in our day and time more than anything else is the right of property and many people have tried to make us believe that there is an essential antagonism between so-called property rights and human rights it is a fallacy which to my mind underlies the conflict now going on in the world between statism and these freedoms statism comes before us in many kinds of different guises and with many different Appeals it points up with great emphasis any of the errors the mistakes in the application of the democratic principles it points a for example to the depression days of the 30s and with 11 million people in bread lines but it fails to state that under a statism form a government all of those people would probably be in the salt mines working under the Whip and the banner but then it seems to me we must do is in this struggle to preserve our freedoms which we approve time and again are more valuable to us than all else is to show that all of our freedoms are of a bundle Belong Together cannot exist one without the other and when we do that I believe we have established the facing Stone in the whole structure of defense against the encroachment of statism Doctrine now the educational institutions if it can get all of our young to understanding the truth about these matters we have made a long step forward but a man a ghost but let us say the United States Goes to School only in part and then only for part of our lives I believe that no matter how effective is the work of the educational institution it must be supported furthered and Amplified or by every group in the United States that believes as I have been trying so haltingly to say that in the education and understanding of our people today lies the certainty of our own future now among these forces these institutions I can think of no one with more influence than the advertisers the advertising mechanisms and individuals and media of the nation you have a ceaseless and daily impact upon us all now you were selling washing machines and soap and services and cigarettes and everything else there is those things were made by this combination between our Maximus resources the initiative of America born of its free system so every time you're selling one of those things to my mind you're selling part of America but along with it I believe if you're going to continue to sail through the decades you must sell also an understanding of what made those things what is necessary a to this free market and what this free market means to the individual freedoms of each of us and I believe that that understanding can be brought about by one means and that is telling the truth never that anything that we say about America must be capable of being held up and disproved as a distortion and evasion or a falsa because the truth is sufficient we are convinced that anyone that has known our way of life if given the free choice and the understanding of our system as opposed to all forms of dictatorship and statism will choose our own therefore why lie about it quite clean that it is never had any defects particularly in the application of these principles through the past and indeed in the future but if we can wed ourselves to the spiritual devotion two of the basic plan the basic scheme the basic concept itself kind that we like to think of that was displayed by Nathan Hale and Patrick Henry and George Washington Abraham Lincoln we don't have to Aspire a two let us say the stature of those people but we can certainly worship and believe him and follow the same Concepts and the same principles that they live because remember that is why we think they are men of such stature and by doing that and Forever Living the truth of those things and holding them the in a truthful aspect before the people in the United States I do not believe that any form of dictatorship whether it is attempts to come on us by assault from without By Boring from within or merely by suffocating Us in the hoping to choke our understanding of what is happening to us when each of us gives up some of his individual responsibility to the state no matter in what former guys it comes is certain to be defeated if America remains Forever United just on those few simple things I want to correct before I stopped just one little impression given to you by Mr West it was not a personal sacrifice for me to come here today it was a great and rare personal privilege what he merely meant was that I am so inefficient that I seem to get my day so crowded that I don't have the hours of leisure that most people do to do these things yes freedom is indivisible General Eisenhower has given voice to the affirmative views of both education and business as regards the right of property profit and wage incentives competition a free market a government to service not rule us the preservation of our political and economic freedoms is our Crusade [Applause] [Music] I mean Eisenhower comes off as a knee-jerk liberal given the current conservative uh patter um you know certainly he was responding to Cold War fears and Stalin what Stalin was doing uh Soviet Union but uh it's it's fascinating he's he's a really interesting guy um certainly a populist president um and um but yeah his warning about the military-industrial complex was amazing that was his parting shot uh but I got another film on the scanner it's a religious film it's called the it says the church but it's missing the title so uh or no the school so here we go let's see I don't know what this is again maybe it's going to be amazing maybe not but the school enjoy [Music] good morning foreign [Music] years ago in the hill Villages of Palestine all the boys went to school as a matter of course you could see them setting off from home in the mornings then as now they forgot their coats then as now their mothers called them back and put their coats on and kissed them goodbye they went to school at the synagogue at the top of the Village Street the courtyard of the synagogue was a sort of playground but once they were inside the building the Schoolmaster was waiting to see that they all remembered to bow to the ark as they came in they went through a curtain doorway into the school room here they sat on the floor or on Stone benches the morning's work began with the boys repeating the Jewish belief after the master yes when they had repeated as much as they had learned the master would move around to his desk and sit down on the floor to read there were no books in those days but roles of a sort of paper with writing on it the master read out sentences from the books of Jewish history and law and the writings of the Jewish Prophets and the boys would repeat the sentences after him the rules were written in Hebrew not in the language the boys spoke every day which was a sort of Hebrew called Aramaic after the class had repeated some sentences together after him the master would call on separate boys to repeat what they had learned this one doesn't seem to know it very well [Music] perhaps this one will do better [Music] been a tall in this way the boys learned by heart whole books of Jewish writings in Hebrew next would come the writing lesson wooden tablets were handed round with a sentence in Hebrew written on them then the master would read out the sentence [Music] boys would pick out the words after him and learn the look of the Hebrew letters that spelled them notice the writing went from right to left him [Music] um next the master would call out one of the older boys to come and read from one of the Sacred books when a boy could read easily he would have to read from the pulpit in the synagogue to the whole congregation one Sabbath day but the master would be beside him to help him all the people in the synagogue would listen carefully to see how he read and a translator translated the Hebrew as he read it sentence by sentence into Aramaic read well he passed out of the junior school and was no longer considered a child now all his learning both reading and writing has been from Jewish history and law and from the writings of the prophets where did the roles of holy books come from day by day in a room of the synagogue holy books would be read out loud by the rabbi of the synagogue he read to men who were clever at writing called scribes Ben quiche they wrote down at his dictation and so fresh copies of the law and the prophets and the histories were made [Music] when a scribe had finished one role he would get up and fetch another the other writers would seize the opportunity to stretch and rest when he was already the dictation would start again the pieces of paper that made up a book were stuck together and were rolled sometimes on one piece of wood and sometimes on two the books had to be copied very exactly for they were the only books used in the schools and universities foreign the Jewish Secondary School of this time met in the courtyard of a synagogue but the way of learning was the same as in the elementary school the boys repeated history and the law and the writings of the prophets after the master uh but at this school they would discuss the meaning of what they learned by heart sometimes they discussed other things until they were called water we're encouraged to argue with the master and with one another as much as they liked and this sharpened up their wits in this case they call in the master of the elementary school to help clear up the fight they have under discussion he puts his view of the matter to them but they're not completely satisfied with what he says one boy sees the rabbi coming through the courtyard and runs to ask him if he'll come and settle the point they are discussing it was part of the work of the rabbi to explain and make clear the exact meaning of the Holy books so the boys here are the two masters and the rabbi talking in this way they learn what clever men think about the law and how they discuss learned matters and prove what they say so far all the education has been in the local synagogue but if a boy wanted more education than he could get in his own town he would go to Jerusalem to the temple learned teachers used to teach groups of young men in the courtyard of the temple at Jerusalem these groups where the University classes of the time but the way of teaching was the same as in the schools of the small towns reading from the law and the prophets and talking over what they'd read and arguing over its exact meaning visitors to the temple often used to stop and watch the teaching and this little boy may be deciding that he will be a learned scribe when he grows up the girls didn't go to school but were taught at home by their mothers but like the boys their learning was based on the holy books which they learned to read sometimes they found the long words very difficult for it was all in Hebrew an unfamiliar language they learned to write by drawing the Hebrew letters with a stick of charcoal on a wooden board [Music] s but you can do more things with taco and write letters with it hello because [Music] Jewish families were very fond of each other and the children were not very often scolded every evening round the fire a Jewish family would gather to hear the father read from the law and the prophets and from Jewish history the family holy book was very precious and was kept wrapped up in silk in the wooden chest few families which were not rich could afford to have more than one role to read from so from their very earliest years Jewish children learned to base their lives on the books of the law and the prophets give me understanding and I shall keep thy law yay I shall observe it with my whole heart make me to go in the path of thy commands for therein do I Delight incline my heart unto thy testimonies and not to covetousness turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity and Quicken thou me in thy way establish Thy word unto thy servant devoted to thy fear um excuse me all right I had no idea the school no idea but uh it uh yeah it tries to explain what it was like to grow up in uh and during that time um when Jesus was around and not in the 70s where God is winning um yeah fascinating fascinating film all right uh thanks for tuning in today uh I very much appreciate you watching and contributing Jeremy thank you for the two dollars you can support us by uh first of all just hitting the thumbs up and or the like button those are easy inexpensive ways to support what we do because it tells YouTube hey don't uh cancel this account because people like it I really like that matters really um and uh otherwise you can support us is hitting the super thanks button uh and donating some cash which will help offset the thirty dollars per box that it takes uh when boxes are shipped to me so I today we paid 100 and 80 for a bunch of films and that's we didn't pay for the films we just paid shipping and so we are getting um the post office is getting rich well not really getting rich but um FedEx is getting rich all these these boxes and things that it's the shipping is just outrageous um and we talked about doing a palette but I just I didn't think logistically they could manage a palette in Albuquerque so we've done that before where we've got we've gotten remember a couple years ago we got 14 pallets so we know how to handle pallets um but other ways of course ko-fi.com avgeeks patreon.com all those are great ways to support us um yeah we'll be
