for is is is oops lost track lost track of time I was watching the uh the feed and I was watching the stunt show and I got got all caught up in it um yeah that was World's Fair footage um was it Chicago I think so maybe kind of you know it didn't have the unisphere um didn't have some of the trappings of the New York uh world's fair but anyways so hey I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a geks lunchtime streaming show and up above me are roofers who didn't finish yesterday so they are literally above my head so if you hear banging or if you see debris Falling on My Head um you'll know what that's about it is uh it's a little jarring but that's okay and what I'm hoping is that they're wearing Safety Shoes [Music] the [Music] oh [Music] uh yes uh lots of foot fetishes there we could combine that with toast tell and quite and paint quite a picture uh toes tell of course is that encyclopedia Botanica film with a little girl who is also walking around Barefoot um and rubbing her toes on all different types of textures um and it totally creeps out people who watch it sometimes all right so behind me I have a scanner set up and uh we're going to hopefully make this work um I should check to see if I've actually shown this film uh NOP no nope nope nope nope nope okay so there's a a spreadsheet that I go through and I try to see if I've shown it and if I've shown it have I shown it recently like did I show it last week and I just completely spaced um and also the comments yesterday I was reading them I'm sorry about that latter film The last ladder film it was uh it was excruciating and it was unfortunately was not punctuated by people falling which is what I think makes it work is like some good music some good jazz music and people falling occasionally uh or stuff breaking that's I think what we want uh so anyways this film is um that's not what this is It's the good manners game I'm just going to go ahead and apologize because it rhymes use this leader to focus the picture and adjust the sound volume the film will then be ready for correct projection [Music] [Music] Susie Susie I want to use the tape just a minute Johnny we're still using it come on I want to use the tape just wait a minute come on let me have the tape now haven't you ever heard of good manners okay then I'll go get my own tape boy was I ever angry I decided to go to Mr Mac's shop and see if he had some tape I didn't know it then but that's how I learned the good manners [Music] game now I wonder if my Talking Machine will work I'll just give this switch a little jerk [Music] that's not a word that sounds absurd oh now let's see how good you can be hello thank you thank you now I see how good you can be well hello Johnny how do you do how can I help a good friend like you do you have some tape I can use I believe I do I'm sure it's so but you don't have good manners if you don't say hello gee that's just what Susie said you see I wanted to get the tape from Susie but she said I didn't have good manners and she gave it to Dennis didn't have good manners so I thought I'd get my own tape from you do you have some to give you some tape I'll be happy to do but will that make make a difference will that really please you tell me your feelings now be honest my lad isn't the real problem that you're feeling bad well I guess I do feel pretty bad I really do want Susie to like me maybe the reason you feel bad and ashamed is because you forgot the good manners game good manners game what's that it's to use good manners for that's the right thing to do good manners make living nicer for others and you maybe my Talking Machine can help you see what I mean good manners are simple to learn and to do they start with small words like excuse me hello please thank you think back and remember when Dennis was running so fast he gave you a hard bump as he went last I remember that it did make me angry now think how much nicer things could be if we had good excuse me thank you right if you use those small words you're being real smart but it's important to know that they're only the start a part of the game we also should cover is taking care of things that belong to another to someone else I don't understand hm you uh don't understand huh remember when Diane used your crayons to color and forgot to put them back in their box safe undercover Diane Lunch is ready okay Mom I sure do they melted in the sun if Diane had been careful with the crayons she had wouldn't you have been happier less angry and sad sure she could have put them away you know knocked some things onto the floor if you'd taken care of those things and remembered the game would the manager feel better or would it still be the same no it wouldn't be the same because cuz I know real fast but there's still one more point we mustn't go past another yes you know there are plenty of people whom you'll never meet be good mannered to them and give them a treat but I don't understand if we never meet them then how can we play the good manners game with them well do you remember the time when you sat down to eat lunch and your table was covered with garbage quite a bunch the kids who had sat there long before you didn't know the good manners game that's being rude and mean too that's right whoever they were they should have cleaned up their own mess then you'll also remember what some people do they paint walls and benches that's Bad Manners too people shouldn't spoil things for others [Music] so tell me now Johnny is it really true that others bad maners mean nothing to you I do care when other people forget the good manners game I guess they care when I'm rude too that's right that's right they do they do wow Mr Mac just imagine what it would be like if nobody had good manners oh yes just imagine a world where folks were so rude that they ignored all hellos that had put you in a bad mood if we all lack good manners by not listening when others are speaking you'd get so upset you'd feel like [Music] shrieking if we all gave up manners that give others a treat it would be hard to do anything even to eat you could not even get to the front of the line you couldn't do anything no one would give you the [Music] time so you can see that good manners are really a way to get along with each other that's the reason we say to act with good manners is the right thing to do it makes living nicer for others and you aha that's right I do say man tell me again how's the game played we should always remember small words like excuse me hello please and thank you we should remember that good manners begins at home wait Johnny here's your lunch thanks Mom you're welcome have a good day you too [Music] Mom we should be thoughtful of other [Music] you [Music] so that is the movie um so there's a lot not a lot but there's several films in that series uh the game it's series um and we should do a whole show of just the game films no I can't I couldn't tolerate that I that's there's something about that that time period And I love how Smith the the uh Mac Mr Mac but uh the rhyming just drives me nuts really drives me nuts so yeah we're not going to be doing that um let's learn about the importance of of traffic police [Music] enjoy traffic car 7 accident 10th in Union streets ambulance on the way [Music] [Music] you are now entering a community that could be your own let's call it Middletown USA a city that by overhauling its traffic enforcement Machinery went from Red into black in its traffic accident record formerly a daily occurrence for in spite of a model traffic law there were drivers here as everywhere who respect not the letter of the law but only law that is enforced this was Middletown's traffic accident balance sheet on one side a high accident rate on the other comparatively few convictions for traffic violations proof of inadequate enforcement too many accidents in Middletown yes in many in every town a needless and tragic toll throughout the nation calling among other things for improvement in cities Villages and rural areas in the volume and quality of law enforcement to find the index to the volume of traffic law enforcement in your community divide convictions with penalty for hazardous moving violations by the number of death and injury accidents in Middletown when the community found its proper level of enforcement an index of 15 the result was a sharp drop in the accident rate the quality of enforcement depends upon more than just the number of citations and arrests for Effective enforcement depends upon a high percentage of convictions with penalties quality of enforcement also depends upon making best use of police Personnel by analysis of its accident records in spot Maps Middletown could determine the traffic violations that were causing most of the trouble and so by selective enforcement concentrating its available police at the time and place of these violations the number of accidents was reduced the development of a selective enforcement program and finding the proper enforcement index for your community two essent s of better enforcement of traffic laws but we're getting ahead of our story let's go back to a basic principle Middletown learned early in its experience the need for a special Traffic Division in its Police Department a division on a level with other major police functions reporting to the Department chief operating under the leadership of a capable trained administrator for today a large city police department can no longer afford to conduct its traffic functions as a Seline instead a well-conducted traffic division is run like an efficient business organization with specialization the keynote from the administrator down to every traffic officer chit's functions investigation to determine causes gather evidence to support prosecution if the law has been violated traffic direction handling emergencies as well as everyday routine enforcement seeing that motorists and pedestrians obey traffic laws governing use of streets roads and highways when it comes to selecting a police officer consider his need for special skills maintaining public Goodwill doing an educational as well as an enforcement job knowing when to issue a citation and when in minor or borderline violations a written warning resisting all attempts at ticket fixing working with the prosecutor's office to prepare court cases in his court appearance knowing the basic rules of evidence and testifying clearly without bias giving a high priority to service of warrants on those who fail to answer a court summons educating pedestrians in safety using specialized equipment necessary in modern traffic law enforcement work yes today's traffic officer has a highly specialized job demanding training as well as aptitude training for all engaged in enforcing state and local traffic laws with higher levels of instruction for traffic administrators and commanding officers at recognized training schools enforcement that does not depend on sporadic drives or campaigns but is instead a week in week out yearround job constant effort to build voluntary observance of traffic laws enforcement aided by careful selection of personnel a vigorous training program sound planning continual analysis of accident records in short the efficient personnel and operating practices of a well-run business when all local and State Police organizations are doing these things the high traffic accident rate can be materially reduced and thus we will take another important step in the action program for traffic safety wow so I think I have others in this series and um there's one about traffic court as well um and all of these are attempts to uh increase traffic s safety awareness through uh law enforcement and you know uh speaking of Courts I've shown this film I show this film like four years ago but it's so great um I did it as part of a show called when hippies R the Earth and uh this is actually a really amazing film and I don't know if they actually make anything like this now which is a consumer rights film or video like it it teaches uh people who watch it about what rights they have uh when they enter into agreements uh regarding uh money Etc so this is It's a pretty awesome Series so this is your right to a hearing repossession enjoy it ain't going to work Mrs Ean what do you mean it's not going to work you haven't paid a rent for four months Mr Scott I told you that I'm going to get you a check when the check gets here then you will get in the room how the landlord can no longer lock out a tenant the tenant first has the right to a court hearing there it's hit the bottom oh wait a minute wait a minute it's a wrong check there this is only for one day and I worked a full week maybe PID your bills and they might have gar to shed your wages I worked a full week pay your bills wages can no longer be garnish Sheed without your first having the opportunity of a hearing [Music] oh no personal property can no longer be repossessed from your home against your will without giving you a chance to tell your side of the story in court [Music] morning salsburg that's me serving you with a municipal court summons on the attached complaint whoa wait a minute you don't understand hey I'm sorry but it's like a Hey listen I'm sorry but look out hey what is it I'm 3 months behind on my guitar amplifier P kiding got 30 days to answer this come up with a whole thing 760 bucks what else what else what or else no guitar no guitar no group no group no gigs no gigs no money no money no Pat says here if you wish to seek the advice of an attorney how the money what's the defend I don't know but a lawyer might yeah for more D we don't have yeah but I heard when you're broke there free legal services you can go to I think there's something called The Neighborhood Legal Services Society well Barney you got to try well I'll try but I don't think it'll do any good it's too late what can I do now we can file a written answer to this summons and as long as we can come up with some kind of a straight answer about why you haven't paid you have a right to a hearing in court and maybe we can can work out something in front of the judge about the payments so they can't just take my guitar my pay that's right in Most states they can't take any of your personal property except for a car in some situations until you've had a hearing before a judge so as long as we can file an answer to this thing in time you have a right to a court hearing it sounds too complicated let him try to take my guitar hey wait a minute come on back sit down it's really not that much trouble why did you just tell me the whole story well I was working with my ban for a while and uh we've been practicing pretty regularly and it was sounding pretty good and the rest of the guys in the band had pretty good instruments figured it was about time I got a new guitar and an amplifier so I went down to the music store and I found a guitar I really [Music] loved hey now here's a young man's really got taste beautiful little instrument isn't it yeah let me tell you something we have a special on this I can knock $50 off the tag price how do you like that 50 and we can give you terms real good budget terms low as you need them don't have to worry about pay I figured besides my regular job I'd make up some of the money playing jobs with the band Mr Macintosh there checked out my age was 18 and he gave me a contract to sign now let's see a couple of Vital Statistics you're 18 I think you said yeah 18 good are you married no not married that's about it that it anything else that's all you all right you may step down your I would just like to add one word um my client does not contest his obligation to pay under this contract but I would like to point out that uh Mr macintosh's store is filled with signs offering Bargains and special budget terms and it's very enticing and I I think it would be easy to understand how a young man like my client might be led into taking on more than he could uh really pay for boy I can understand that readily counselor and thank you and I guess Mr Macintosh that we ought to reflect upon the fact that if your merchandise weren't advertised in such an alluring way to younger customers that perhaps you wouldn't find yourself in a courtroom like this seeking either a repossession or some kind of an arrangement on the other hand Mr Saltsburg you are 18 years old which means that you have the capacity to enter into contracts and what that means of course is that you have to be responsible for the debts that you incur uh this was a valid contract this Merchant uh dealt fairly with you uh he checked your age and so on and he entered into a binding contract with you you're liable to pay him the sum of money beyond that you could have avoided all of this hassle as a matter of fact if you had simply gone down and talk to the man and explain your problem as it is all he could see was uh some kind of a ripoff was going on now I gather from what you said on the stand that uh in fact if he allows you to keep this equipment uh then you in the next 90 days would be able to get off these back payments I guess you've got some engagements lined up with the equipment and then be able to keep the payments going regularly after that now is that true yes sir all right what about it Mr McIntosh you know actually if you were to go along with something like this you'd save yourself a good deal of time headaches and and some money I think your lawyer will tell you so how about it Mr McIntosh you willing to give it a try well sir if the boy had even telephoned me and explained his problem instead of just ignoring my bills I might have been willing to wait but not now I I he me I suggestion your honor if the court wants to Def prer judgment until we have had an opportunity to meet with Mr salsberg and his attorney and work out a new payment schedule my client will be happy to have this case taken off calendar all right counselor it's so ordered now Mr Saltsburg I want to put a couple thoughts into your computer before you leave the courtroom first off you were wise to answer this summons there are people who don't and those people just get into trouble uh first off uh what happens is that the judgment is entered against them it's a default judgment they're just as liable as a result of that judgment as if they had come into court and argued and presented evidence and lost uh that judgment then is entered as I said and it results in a bad credit rating a bad credit rating can really upset your your life and future years family life and whatnot uh and it still could happen in this case now if you don't pay very serious attention to whatever Arrangement that you work out with Mr McIntosh you're going to have to abide by that agreement when you reach it otherwise that equipment's simply going to be repossessed in short it's a heavy situation when you don't stick up to your obligations now you're lucky Mr McIntosh did not have to to make this agreement he was legally entitled to get this judgment and then get execution on that that equipment but apparently it looks promising that you're going to have some kind of an arrangement that's going to bail you out and let him get paid now that's all I wanted to say [Music] [Music] n [Music] I love that I love that judge you might have thought it was some sort of rip hop uh so maybe he shown in high school but shown in home e or shown in consumer math that was the math that I was taking collegate level advanced placement math and calculus but boy I could use I could have used something that talked about my uh like how to balance a checkbook all that stuff because that was all stuff I had to figure out on my own and uh yeah all right so I got one more film on the scanner behind me town planning enjoy [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] this city did not always exist long ago this was a virgin land a vast expanse of hills and plains furrowed by rivers and numerous streams man came and soon discovered the fertility of the land he settled there sewing and plowing to the rhythm of the season and as the years went by slowly pushed back the [Music] forest more people came and shared in the task of making the land productive a settlement Rose it spread along the only line of communication the river The Hub of all social life was the Public Square a meeting place where ideas and merchandise were exchanged obedient to current necessity the settlement would either wallet in as a fortress or sprawl out Under the Sun as a busy Village and then there were streets and more streets and shops and offices and public buildings and again more streets a network of communications and services each City had its own set of specific functions commercial political administrative according to the needs of an often vast surrounding area [Music] then when one day the simple domestic pattern of many cities was shaken the machine was [Music] born whever the machine came the soft Contours of the landscape gave way to a new hard spouting Skyline with the speed of a revolution the city took its modern shape a shape molded on its one new overwhelming role industrial [Music] production hard angry words were spoken words that are still repeated today voices cried out against the congestion and the Darkness against the dull depressing uniformity of the houses mere extensions of the [Applause] factories voices cried out against the noise and the smoke and the blind bulk of the new fortresses of Industry [Music] hey put that thing up whatever the city's shape men continue to be born here whatever the city's future it will be Theirs to share until recently expediency and convenience have governed the city's Evolution It Is by now A Familiar process first a natural [Music] artery then a Street houses [Music] shops secondary streets soon encircled by factories and railroads [Music] then houses Sprout around between the factories and the pattern repeats itself factories then houses factories and more houses a mixed zone is created and eventually degenerates into slums the process is Relentless great homes that were fashionable 50 years earlier are brutally deformed [Music] expanding industry and commerce overrun districts which were once exclusively residential but the mistakes of the past can be corrected the science of town planning can attempt to harness the growing city and give it systematic Direction but first the city must be studied and understood the basic element which will condition its Urban form is the population its age its density its activities and interests the rate of its growth man must be studied his mobility and modes of Transport his use of the automobile traffic and parking problems become subjects of research and [Music] study modern man is a man that moves the modern city can give him Avenues of motion or tie him in knots [Music] the town planner must also examine the natural elements topography soil vegetation wind direction [Music] climate having studied the Dynamics of a city's growth it is possible to guide its future evolution by drawing up a master plan the town planner will Begin by laying out a perimeter of expansion of the city it is within this perimeter that the future city is expected to grow industrial zones must offer space for expansion if possible in the heart of communication Networks in this case in the southern part of the city near the [Music] railroad the town planner will Reserve that zone for industry he must also consider the center of the old city here there are problems not of the future but of the past it is evolved at random the area's true function must therefore be reasoned out and Order must be [Music] imposed at the same time slum zones in the Heart of the City must be eliminated and replaced by buildings serving commercial and public [Music] [Applause] needs around the expanding core several residential areas are planned to house a growing population each Zone will become a neighborhood of 2 to 5,000 person main traffic arteries will connect each Zone and lead into the downtown and residential [Music] areas inside each residential Zone a network of smaller streets will be laid out for efficient local circulation of traffic there will be easy movement to the axis of the neighborhood where community services will be located much of this will be pedestrian traffic heavier motor traffic will move to the perimeter of the zone to connect with larger arteries the town planner's master plan is not a rigid document to be blindly enforced it is at best an informed guess as to Future growth the plan evolves with the city itself and is revised constantly to cope with unforeseen Trends it is a flexible guide to better organization and [Music] development it is only through patient planning that the vast C can be disciplined and made to serve the individual in his search for happiness and fulfillment [Music] it was Plato who said the highest and most beautiful form of thought is that which is concerned with the ordering of the city this being practical wisdom and justice I have to cut that short uh but that jazz
