is that hello everybody here I am welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where my hair is doing whatever it wants to do that's kind of the way it is over here uh I'm skip Alzheimer did I say that did I say that this is the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show uh I've only had one cup of coffees today so far so that's I am uh rectifying that with this delicious uh coffee yeah I think today is actually a national coffee cup of coffee day but it's also national uh silent movie day or International silent movie day and I just showed a silent movie and that is a movie without a soundtrack but National silent movie day is actually celebrating films that were made during the silent era so uh the 20s late 20s up to the beginning of Cinema and the late 1800s um and it's a way to educate people about the fact that there's a rich movie Heritage in history that was basically wasn't being shown at some point because there was no sound and they felt like audiences weren't interested in something they didn't have talking and uh so what's What's Left Behind is amazing performances a beautiful cinematography uh directors beginning to figure things out as far as uh edit Styles as far as how you tell a story um special effects all those things amazing things that that happened before the Advent of sound so um that's what they're celebrating there are art housee theaters and theaters across the country that are showing different uh films um that to celebrate this this uh movement um and so yeah uh I've got some silent films so technically that film I just showed wouldn't be shown at uh National silent uh or at uh silent movie day even though it is silent um but you know we so we show silent films here all the time a lot of those mogle Brothers films were made in the late 20s and 30s without sound and they were shown in theaters uh and other places so technically every day could potentially be silent movie day here at a Geeks and um you guys seem to dig it so here we go we're going to start off with something on our film scanner which is behind me um The Immigrant Charlie Chaplain here we go enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] w [Music] pap [Music] w [Music] [Music] what [Music] what [Music] [Applause] [Music] w the [Music] [Music] what [Music] [Music] h [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] what [Music] what [Music] w [Applause] [Music] guys [Music] [Music] oh [Music] la [Music] what a [Music] the [Music] what [Music] what [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] he [Music] [Music] what [Music] what [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] w [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] a [Music] a [Music] e [Music] the [Music] what right yeah that was sweet um I have a lot of chaplain uh and so that was basically uh adapted for television um so you saw the produced by Vernon P Becker uh basically they took a bunch of stuff that was in public domain or they were able to license uh then they kind of cut together a 30 minute show uh and they added um music and sound effects uh great slide whistle in there and this was a way to was relatively cheap programming that uh channels would show generally in the morning or at night um and so everybody was making a little bit of money on this uh and this was a great way to show some uh early Cinema uh and chaplain was pretty great I like I said I could do a whole show of Just chaplain stuff but I wanted to mix it up a little bit so here this one I've shown before but it's still great and it's wonderfully slapstick this is the Keystone Cops love Loot and crash and this was distributed uh via Blackhawk uh which was a uh company that got a lot of early public domain uh shorts and then they released them on 16 and uh 8 mm and super eight um mostly for the Home Market so enjoy [Music] in [Music] I [Music] the l [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] right Keystone Cops uh man that the scene of when they're on the ship and it's kind of going back and forth and you see people rolling back and forth It's like there were people probably like the whole set was probably uh on some sort of pivot and they were glorious stuff like that amazing film making um visually hilarious uh and very smart so there's a whole sense of of editing and comic timing that is uh it's pretty great okay so I got another film for you this we might run a little long so this was part of a series called silence please and this was another thing where they took silent films and then they uh edited them for television uh just like the previous thing uh and this is uh there's narration over the top of it but it also gives like biographical information about the actors and and all that so this is blood and Sand episode of silence please enjoy Rudolph Valentino the greatest of screen lovers opposite the queen of movie Sirens Nan ndi in the 1922 it blood and Sand silence [Music] please the great Stars the excitement the Thrills the laughter and the Heartbreak of Hollywood's Golden Era a small town arena in Spain where Young Spaniards meet for their National Sports just as American Kids team up for Sandlot baseball the look played by Rudolph [Music] [Applause] Valentino Valentino had been popular since appearing as the Chic 2 years before but it was his sensitive work as Gallardo in this 1922 film blood and sand that first brought him star billing charpia gard's best friend takes a [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] turn [Music] with the hometown he sees for the first time in two years his childhood sweetheart Carmen played by lla Lee the neighbors rush to tell Juan's mother he's home and they paint for her a glowing picture of his and it is apparent that there is nothing in the way of an early [Music] wedding all right uh obviously something happened uh um sorry everybody uh I hope it okay let me get this going again hold on oh I know what's going on hold on oh this is frustrating one second all right ran out of dry space sorry about that [Music] at home Carmen prays he'll be [Music] [Applause] safe [Music] a serpent ring though accustomed to the admiration of beautiful women gilardo senses a special magnetism in this one and after the fight he accepts his manager's offer to introduce him to Da [Music] Saul at home another bull fight the combatants W's young nephews Carmen has given onean no children of their own but she has given him all her love and she hopes the encouragement necessary to steady him in his dangerous [Music] profession the Exotic Villa of Da Sal danol has pressed gard's manager to bring onean for a visit and one intrigued complies Artful as he has become in the ring onean is at heart still the socially awkward small town lad drawn by the blandishments of a world he has never known [Music] [Music] da Saul has further pre-arranged with the manager that after dinner he withdraw discreetly [Music] o [Music] [Music] at home Carmen reads the beautiful da Saul returned to Seville last week it is rumored that she no longer wears the famous ring which once belonged to Cleopatra [Music] [Music] [Music] his flower it was a gift from [Music] Carmen [Music] remorseful one tells a friend he'll end the affair that he'll go to the country and forget [Music] but one can't resist saying goodbye to Da Saul in person and to do so he attends one of her parties the night before he [Music] leaves [Applause] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] Ren Canada gard's country estate as he and his party arrive they find a strange limousine stalled near the [Music] gate [Music] no chance of completing repairs before morning chivalry demands that Gallardo be a reluctant [Music] Samaritan in the morning another visitor plumitas the Bandit years before Plumas and onean had met and ever since have followed each other's careers careers that are parallel in that both live by the sword and face death [Music] daily to punish Gallardo for ending their Affair da Saul plans to humiliate him by being present when Carmen arrives with Juan's mother [Music] plumitas is played by Walter long [Music] to wound him further she makes a confession there had been nothing really the matter with her C the evening [Music] before [Music] his two lives confront him desire and pure [Music] love [Music] the last bull fight of the Season takes place that afternoon and onean must be on hand he knows the contest now is not so much with the bull as with his own conscience over the wrong he knows he has done [Music] Carmen [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] la Lumas the Most Wanted Man in Spain risks appearing in public in order to give one [Music] encouragement in the chapel below now that the end has come to one man in dishonor and to the other in a cloak of Glory the next fight goes on as scheduled the author viente iban wrote blood and Sand as an indictment of bull fighting but it was also an indictment of predatory [Music] women [Music] like Juan Gallardo Rudolph Valentino himself was to meet death at the height of his Fame just four years after blood and [Music] Sand wow sorry I even got like food on on my mouth man what a day my have just start from scratch today um I apologize uh what happened was I was scanning this as we were watching it and the hard drive filled up and then the computer was like all right I'm done and so I was periodically looking in and then I was talking to this uh visitor of from duke archives about uh talking about some projects potentially digitizing more advertising for them and um yeah so it stopped and I apologize um but thanks for hanging in there those of you who know the deal with a Geeks and uh their kind of ad hoc semi nonprofessional approach to streaming live to the world um I should say that uh Taran tots is one of our commenters and she and her family went through a hardship recently uh involving a fire and flooding and um is basically in a in homeless and a lot of us are in that state where we're about one Calamity away from being homeless and so I asked her to set up a GoFundMe for her and her family um and so I will copy that into the P into the uh comments that's not what it is let me get it where is it um let's see it's a way to donate you know we none of us make a lot of money but sometimes just a little bit here or there will help um and so uh please consider five bucks 20 bucks more if you can spare it um she's good folks and uh sometimes that's what we need is uh a stranger to kind of just help us out a little bit um I'm sure she would do the same if uh one of you uh dealt with that anyways uh thanks for tuning in today uh I'm GNA take the weekend to get my act together and get the right amount of coffee and then we'll be back on Monday and Tuesday and then Wednesday guess what I'm flying to Toronto and so we'll do more pre-recorded stuff then so anyways thanks for tuning in we
