foreign [Music] thank you [Music] when you see animals do they sometimes remind you of stories [Music] do you like to watch them and think about stories you have read or listened to I think it's fun let's try it look here are one two three baby pigs with their mother is Mother Pig worried about something is the dog worrying her yes she seems to think the dog may hurt her babies a mother Pig Three Little Pigs and a dog do they remind you of a story they make me think of one called The Three Little Pigs it's about three little pigs and a wolf the wolf in the story looks something like a dog like many stories that never really happened this one begins Once Upon a Time once upon a time there were three little pigs who lived with their mother she taught them many things about how to take care of themselves she taught them to hide from the wolf then one day mother Pig sent the Little Pigs out to seek their fortunes now the first little pig followed a path that led across an open field soon he met a farmer with a donkey carrying a load of straw when the farmer saw him the little pig said please give me some straw I want to build a house and the farmer did so the first little pig started to build his house soon the little straw house was finished the first little pig thought it was a fine house not far away the wolf had been watching all the while when the little pig saw the wolf he decided to go in his house and when the wolf moved closer the little pig shut himself in the wolf came up to the door little pig little pig he called Let Me In no no called the little piggy not by the hair of my chinny chin chin that made the wolf very angry he cried then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in he huffed and he puffed the little pig ran out the door just before his straw house fell in the little pig didn't know which way to go then he ran straight back to his mother and the Wolf never saw the first little pig again now the second Little Pig went down a path that led through the woods he met a kind old woman who was carrying home a bundle of twigs for firewood the little pig said will you please give me some Twigs so that I may build a house the kind old woman gave him the whole bundle of twigs so the second little pig started to build his house soon it was done and the second little pig was very happy but he was not alone the wolf had found him too at first the little pig thought he would make friends with the wolves but then he remembered what his mother had told him and shut himself in his house little pig little pig let me in not by the hair of my chinny chin chin then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in he huffed and he popped the little pig got out just in time and the Wolf never saw the second little pig running back safely to his mother the third Little Pig went beyond the field and the woods and over the hill looking for just the right place to build his house whom should he meet But A man carrying a load of bricks when the man stopped the little pig said if you would give me some bricks I'd be very grateful for then I could build a fine strong house so the kind man gave the third little pig all the bricks he would need to build a house building with bricks took a long time it was hard work too finally the little brick house was finished it was a fine house but up on the hilltop was the wolf he had found the third little pig too just in time the pig got safely inside his house little pig little pig let me in not by the hair of my chinny chin chin then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in people and he puffed but he didn't hurt the strong Brick House a bit inside the third little pig was safe and sound then the wolf tried to trick the little pig I'm much smarter than that pig he thought so he said meet me tomorrow morning at six o'clock at the Garden I'll find some nice fresh turnips for you turnips thought the little pig that sounds good and the Wolf thought I'll get him tomorrow morning at six o'clock but at five o'clock the next morning the little pig got up and hurried to the turnip patch and a few minutes before six he was home again with all the turnips he wanted out of the turnip patch the wolf grew very tired and hot waiting for the little pig of course the pig was safe to catch him the wolf would have to try again the next morning they were to meet in the apple orchard the pig was already busy picking apples when the wolf arrived here called the pig is the very best apple I saved it for you then he threw the apple with all his might and while the wolf was chasing it the pig climbed down and ran home soon the wolf was trying another plan to trick the little pig little pig he called there's a fair in town I'll meet you there tomorrow at four o'clock he won't beat me tomorrow morning thought the wolf but at three o'clock the next morning the little pig got up and went to the fair at the fair he bought a churn so that he could make his own butter then he started home but this time the wolf was waiting for him near the bottom of the hill near the top of the hill the little pig sat down the churn and got ready to surprise the wolf the wolf was watching for the little pig when suddenly he saw something that made him run away he didn't wait to see the little pig step out of the turn few minutes later the little pig was safe at home he had a big kettle of water on the Fire when the wolf came back and saw the churn on the floor he knew what had happened on the hillside he was very angry because the little pig had tricked him again he was so angry that do you know what he did of course you do there was the kettle and the Wolf slid down the chimney right into the hot water the wolf ran away so far he has never come back and that's the story of The Three Little Pigs at least that is one way to tell the story do you know another do you know other stories about Little Pigs why don't you tell your class about this story or hearing impaired um and for maybe people that were learning English what's interesting is how the narration differed from the captions was often simplified but um yeah so we have a couple of these and actually coincidentally I pulled two so I think we're gonna watch another one um later during the show but uh in the meantime let's watch some animation with uh Tilly's philodendron enjoy [Music] just want to help you look at yourself an alcoholic is a person who cannot control his booze oh yeah well I'm no out an elephant you make me nervous I can take it or leave it lots of people are taking it these days about 70 percent of the population that's it everyone is doing it hey our bathrooms are giving me a refill booze plays a big role in our culture and it's been around for centuries here's to you most of those who are able to drink sensibly don't have a problem with alcohol so fast one out of 12 of those who drink are alcoholics no kidding this amounts to about nine million elkis wow hey that's a lot all right friend that ranks with cancer heart disease and mental illness alcoholism can crumble you in short order [Music] ah I wish you wouldn't say things like that next you left me on Skid Row most alcoholics are not the skid row stereotype can you spare a quarter jumbo in fact 19 out of 20 are intelligent men and women many have families hey Mama where's papa it's not only the alcoholic who suffers his or her family does too don't bother your mother now kids she's she's resting gosh that's too bad for business the algae is something like a 10 billion dollar hangover they lose up to three times more productive days annually than the average wage earner uh sorry about that friend this results in added insurance claims property damage as well as lost productivity now let's have a close look at alcohol alone I'll buy that an average ounce and a half drink has 150 calories but no real value no minerals proteins or vitamins you sure have the kick to it the alcohol goes straight to the stomach ninety percent being directly absorbed into the bloodstream it then heads to the brain affecting restraint and judgment this affects one's performance like slurred speech slower reflexes loss of memory dull thinking let me see what are we talking about in great excess drinking leads to stupor and coma the effects vary according to weight sex metabolic makeup or mood the immediate effects will wear off with a cup of black coffee right wrong walking around the block or taking a cold shower doesn't help either so what do you do alcohol wears off by oxidation via the bloodstream at the rate of one ounce per hour for example two one and a half ounce martinis equal three hours in a person's system hey that's what I have for lunch lunch too bad buddy booze has no nutrients lack of food produces malnutrition I eat like the horse most of the time prolonged drinking can damage your liver weaken your heart damage your stomach kidneys and nervous system they have easier using me to the shakes ah yes the shakes for the algae this is the DTs meaning delirium tremens the DTs are sometimes accompanied by hallucinations hey watch out for that snake yeah well I must be seeing things hey hey dragons is really friend of the birds for some not everybody who drinks becomes an alcoholic lots of people choose not to drink to excess some drink and just get sick then there are some who appear to stay sober even after drinking a lot how do they do it perhaps it's their particular enzyme system or their ability to metabolize alcohol this is all very interesting elephant but tell me just what makes the person turn into an alcoholic well there's lots of theories but no one knows for certain some use booze to relieve tension to escape maybe their job has become a source of tension for others it might be loneliness yeah or maybe they're just plain bored with life sometimes family problems or marital difficulties Bring It On take that you bum oh social surroundings friends neighbors business associates drinking becomes the thing to do if you want to belong it seems like everybody is trying to escape from something Escape let's get out of here here some researchers think alcoholism may be inherited family habits May influence attitudes the young often imitate parents so is the kid I guess some use boost to cope with the environment hey you're starting to see the light it's like a substitute for a strong personal relationship or a challenging work sensitive intelligent people often find their roles unrewarding but booze is like a means of self-expression still others use it as a cure for fear booze is courage oh that poor dude the hooch it is just the temporary help huh often it makes situations worse someone who keeps on drinking in spite of painful results can be considered alcoholic but are there any real symptoms to look for each algae has a different drinking pattern but one thing is in common was it they cannot control their drinking one will drink heavily for a long while but can stop for certain periods of time well that's all for now partner others lose control over drinking after a few some will develop a tolerance for alcohol so they have to drink more just to get the same effect eventually they cannot stop for fear of the pain of withdrawal later this can lead to convulsions level with me am I enough alcoholic have you ever promised to quit drinking sure lots of facts once I went two whole weeks without the drink why'd you start again I was getting too tense I guess needed something to relax me but listen I can hold my booze what do you like when you're high who knows I can't remember anything when the mountain the sauce hmm just about everything you said could be early stages of alcoholism but it's hard to tell a heavy social Drinker from an early stage alcoholic I'm in this way for 10 years do you take a snort in the morning only when I'm alone if old lady knew she'd had me committed huh afraid of your wife huh what she don't know don't hurt her yeah she'd be nagging me about it your wife mags huh brother that's that's not the half of it if I've missed the Monday after a rough weekend shoot you should hear it hey hey that's why I have a little bumper to every day okay you've just mentioned the middle stages of alcoholism Buster you're in a pattern drink guilt isolation discouragement drink again the next steps rock bottom soon you'll find yourself isolated from friends family the world you won't eat go on chew lots of vitamins nerves will snap take tranquilizers but they're not going to help for long your whole personality changes your tense irritable Shake hallucinate till you're consumed okay okay if I were an alcoholic what could I do the only sure cure is to kick booze completely it's not just a matter of willpower you're right it is hard the alcoholic needs both physical and mental treatment to recover like alcoholism for one who's really bottomed out is a medical problem many hospitals across the country accept alcoholics for treatment under a doctor's care special drugs can control discomfort of withdrawal and nervousness the body can be nourished back to health through proper care and diet certain chemicals which act as a fence against drinking may be prescribed along with physical treatment is mental treatment counseling is the starting point helping the alcoholic person to face life without a booze crutch gosh that would be a good feeling to begin with institutional confinement might be necessary to separate the person from alcohol there are also alcoholism clinics offering medical and psychological treatment on an outpatient basis following treatment one finds several Avenues of continuing help alcoholics anonymous AA for example reformed alcoholics working with one another for a common goal to stay sober sort of like group therapy hi elephant yeah you could say that the longer an alcoholic stays dry the better the chance for full recovery what if you have a relapse sometimes a relapse convinces the alkie that he just can't drink any kind of alcoholic beverage yeah maybe that's so you might have to develop new interests new friends or associations gosh a lot of things you say make sense elephant I think I have a good idea with alcoholism is it's a plain sickness it could take a real personal crisis a shock to get an alcoholic to want help the people around the alcoholic sometimes have to be patient still with others friends sometimes must be firm and help the alcoholic realize his potential in life both parties should find out where to go for help a doctor Alcoholics Anonymous local alcoholism information centers to mention a few sources hundreds of thousands of Alcoholics have recovered and stayed sober the rest of their lives why can't you oh I hey why can't I [Music] so uh two cartoons from Encyclopedia Britannica two cartoons although both um were made by other companies for Encyclopedia Britannica so they both had very different animation styles and different messages I mean Tilly's follow dendrum I might have to watch that a couple of times to try to figure that one out uh but uh this one alcohol a pink elephant has the funny drunk which is something that we don't see nowadays but everybody invoked Otis the drunk from uh Andy Griffith Show uh who is a great uh character actor by the way Hal Smith who sometimes shows up in the films that we have uh and definitely does a lot of cartoon voices although he did not do cartoon voices in the last two cartoons we saw all right so behind me we have the film scanner and I've got a another caption filmed coincidentally I pulled um this is a surprise for mother and let me see if I can get the attention going so enjoy [Music] mother is cooking lunch she cooks for her family the food smells good Peter says mother is a good cook mother has some juice for Kathy this is Kathy Kathy has a cold mother takes care of Kathy Peter says mother helps us when we are sick Peter says Let's Help Mother Judy says we can set the table the children set the table for mother Judy looks at the calendar Mother's Day is in May the children will plan a surprise for mother Judy and Peter Shake money out of their piggy banks Peter will buy something pretty for mother Judy will buy a present too Kathy will draw a pretty picture for mother father comes home from work Judy says this Sunday will be Mother's Day we are planning a surprise for mother father will help the children foreign looks for presents for mother Peter sees something pretty Peter will buy these candles for mother Judy will buy this box of soap for mother mother will light these presents they will make her happy father says I'll buy mother a plant it's Mother's Day everyone is excited Here Comes mother the family says happy Mother's Day mother says these candles are so pretty mother likes her presence she is very happy uh so Leonard Peck um did squeak the squirrel I think I believe that's right I'll have to look it up but uh yeah I love showing the living language series because especially if I don't give context I mean I gave you guys some context the other film but I love showing it to people who don't know what it is and they're just like what is that like uh trying to wrap your head around it trying to figure out like why are these long silent uh parts to the film where there's nothing happening and then why is the dialogue and then why is there a caption and the captions sometimes don't quite follow but the idea of course is that this is to help uh people who are hearing impaired and also helps it helps a little bit with lip reading um and uh just begins that kind of process so really fascinating stuff uh speaking of fascinating stuff let's learn about how we can use radioactivity to find more oil enjoy when science robbed the magic lamp of nuclear physics their burst upon the world a terrifying Genie fantastically destructive but not without many secrets for man's use in his struggle to master his environment the lethal powers of radioactivity deadly byproduct of the super bombs are well known now but as early as 1940 the oil industry had learned the secrets of these silent rays and harnessed them to if in the search for oil we could look deep into the Earth we would find disclosed a geological record of an area's history and its composition in order to utilize this record in oil exploration it must be interpreted by two specialized branches of the oil industry geology and well logging geology as applied in oil exploration helps to identify the formations penetrated by the drill through a study of the appearance structure and mineral composition of the material found in bore cuttings and in cores Nuclear Physics has proved that every individual strata of the earth contains measurable radioactivity to a varying degree combined with other known geological information about an area the measurement of this radioactivity becomes an additional means of identifying each stratum in its plates extremely important information when seeking the exact depth and extent of an oil producing Zone [Music] the measurement of natural radioactivity is one of the basic operations of radioactivity logging recorded as a gamma-ray curve it is a measure of the natural radiation of a formation or expressed in another way a measure of the level of radioactivity of a formation a complete radioactivity log includes a neutron curve which is an indicator of the fluid content of a formation an indication to a degree of the relative ferocity of subsurface formations and thereby the possible presence of oil water or gas this is accomplished by a measurement of radiation which is artificially induced and then detected by the logging tool in its reflected form watch this logging tool making a typical gamma ray log rising in the well it measures the level of radioactivity of each formation radioactivity in underground formations is of low but measurable intensity Shale is generally the strongest in natural radiation most radioactive material radiates Alpha Beta or gamma rays Alpha and beta rays are so weak that they are ignored for logging purposes but gamma rays are very energetic they're strong penetrating power makes them the most effective form of natural radiation available for making a radioactivity law now let's discuss the neutron curve a neutron is one of the essential particles of an atom which is the smallest unit of all elements the atoms of the different elements are identifiable by the different number of their neutrons and other particles of which they are composed when a highly radioactive element radium or polonium is mixed with beryllium Neutron emission occurs these neutrons leave the neutron source to bombard the surrounding area a neutron Source in a logging tool sends these neutrons into the surrounding formations at a terrific rate of speed setting the stage for other strange natural phenomena the bombarding neutrons then change form or speed and the results are detected by the logging tool and recorded by the graph above ground hydrogen is always present in oil water and gas bearing formations and therefore it is the most important element encountered in Neutron logging the bombarding neutrons are affected by the hydrogen in the formation the results are detected and recorded as the neutron curve in effect the neutron curve measures the effect of neutrons which have bombarded a formation in a fast stream the logs are interpreted as proportional to the hydrogen content of the bombarded formation and are therefore an indicator of the degree to which the formation is porous with its accompanying indications as to the existence of oil water and gas depending on how well the characteristics of a formation are known the neutron curve helps to eliminate exploration in zones which are probably unproductive the complete radioactivity log properly interpreted gives much valuable information the gamma-ray curve is used principally to measure the level of radioactivity of a formation and is recorded satisfactorily encased or open hole regardless of borehole fluid the neutron curve is also effective under adverse borehole conditions and helps to determine the hydrogen content of a formation the job of translating gamma rays and neutrons into a radioactivity log is done by a chain of rugged expertly engineered and specially designed equipment like this logging tool cable and the Hoist and recorder truck the logging tool in the well-trained hands of the logging crew is capable of amazing feats of underground Magic it must operate in boreholes averaging 4 inches to 10 inches in diameter to ensure easy unobstructed Traverse maximum outside diameter is limited to 3 and 5 8 inches the smallest tool in use is only one and three-eighths inches in diameter so it is obvious that all the working parts have to be stretched out [Music] the main components from bottom to top include the neutron source the neutron detector and a power amplifier the gamma-ray detector a second power amplifier and a casing color locator the uppermost unit is a cable Head which is the Terminus for the tough electric conductor cable the link between the logging tool and the Hoist and recorder trucks the well bore and conditions encountered within it determine every step in the design and manufacture of the logging tool the sensitive recording power and amplifier instruments are stretched out in Chambers which are protected by a smooth heavy alloy steel jacket sections are sealed with quick threat connections and special gaskets and they are so precisely machined that the assembled tool gives the appearance of a single unit this close bit is necessary for defense against the extreme pressures temperatures corrosive contamination and other abusive conditions encountered in the borehole painstaking care and planning in manufacture is also given the cable in its role as a depth measuring line it must have minimum stretch under the tension of its own weight and the weight of the logging tool it must house one or more insulated conductors capable of transmitting the impulses detected many feet underground to the truck the Hoist truck regulates depth control as well as hoist speed which varies from 15 to 100 feet a minute it is linked to the instrument truck where the impulses from the logging tool are recorded as kicks on graph paper the gamma ray curve Neutron curve and casing collar locator log are recorded simultaneously as the tool traverses the well standard procedure from bottom to top here is a logging crew getting ready to take to the field to make a radioactivity log the logging tool plus the trucks which house the Hoist cable and recording instruments are thoroughly checked everything is in Readiness for the mission all the necessary instruments are loaded carefully insulated against the shocks and vibrations which may be encountered on the road as the crew travels to the Wild Side welcome upon arrival the trucks are positioned the Hoist truck is braced against the strain of the weight of the logging tool and cable which will be used in the hole the Derrick shiv is secured to the rig to provide ample clearance for the cable as it travels from the Hoist cable reel to the well the crew takes great care in unloading and assembling the logging tool the tool is made up the cable Head is attached and the electrical connections are established providing the link from the instruments through hoist truck to recording truck foreign crew and the heist operator use their combined skills and know-how to move the heavy logging tool to the Derrick floor where it is placed in a vertical position near the well head [Music] a last minute check of the detecting apparatus made with a standard of known strength show the instruments to be in perfect working order [Music] measuring devices are set at zero the Hoist operator gets the signal from the recorder truck and the logging tool begins its descent into the well in search of the information which may mean oil the cable unwinds under the watchful eye of the Hoist operator and the measuring shiv sets a steady Pace as thousands of feet of cable unwind from the Hoist reel as the tool nears the bottom of the well the operator slows it down and carefully checks the bottom with the lower end of the tool [Music] the instrument operator records the depth adjusts the surface instruments chooses the proper sensitivity on the chart and all is in readiness The Heist operator sets the slow deliberate Traverse in motion the instruments do all the work now while The Operators keep a close check on the story that is unfolding deep in the Earth the gamma-ray curve shows minimum recordings to the left or Dolomite Sandstone Limestone or anhydrite as all are low in natural radioactivity the pen records to the right for Shale plays and volcanic ash which are higher in natural radioactivity the pen moving to the right indicates greater natural radioactivity in the formation where did the audio go hmm that's that's weird indeed I guess there's only one thing I can do um to make up for this and that is to play this I can check that gear in a minute so don't touch anything okay foreign [Music] [Music] what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be mince meat by now what have I told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well I told him not to touch anything all right I guess I wasn't thinking y'all weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety hair shake hands with Danger shake hands with danger meet a manual to know I used to laugh at safety now they call me three fingers [Music] I was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my toolbox and I'll take myself a look I climbed up on a Dozier with my mechanic's Pride I said you can keep it running friend while I poke around inside [Music] although I learned a lesson I forgot it soon enough the Nixon Burns and scratches showed the young ones I was tough till another morning I was grinding on some steel my other hand got careless fed my skin into the wheel shake hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what made me [Music] machine mechanics burning I've seen them take a fall just to save themselves a minute I've seen them lose it all I've watched them caught in trouble seeing them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lifetime with the Blues [Music] [Applause] [Music] chickens with Danger [Music] ous [Music] walk around inside [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] laughs [Laughter] to show that um in case you didn't know that was um written by some local musicians Scott Phillips and Greg eyman who were School teachers who also are in a couple of different bands and my wife hired them to do a revisioning of the shake hands with danger song uh and I you know they knocked out of the park they basically she got it for me for my birthday a couple years ago and so I'm very excited to to watch it there's just all these little nuances which are really great so that uh radioactivity um logging film for some reason lost sound halfway through and I know that visually it was scintillating to watch but I just didn't feel like I feel like once you lose the narration and especially that exciting music that they were playing during it um you kind of lost it you don't have um it's not gonna work I could be wrong but um I figured that we're getting close enough to the hour that we might as well bail on that and do some to be at transfer Food Hall and we'll be showing when buses attack and it will be three hours of bus footage from 11AM to 6 p.m and we're gonna Loop it but um we'll be positioned right next to the
