foreign hello everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show or we're back we were at uh fantastic Fest I had to buy this shirt because it has a film projector in it and some skulls um with films going through their eye sockets uh and that's kind of what it was like there uh it's in Austin Texas uh put on by the Alamo Drafthouse of which I'm friends with folks there and so I went there I didn't do anything I just kind of absorbed what was happening but I'm definitely going to do something next year it's uh makes sense um I'm also considering the Alamo headquarters are in a high school they're on an old high school and I was like I talked to the owner and I said hey you have a high school I don't know if you know this I have old school films and he's like oh yeah so I'll be back uh but anyways thanks for bearing with me and all the pre-recorded shows um I was occasionally peeking in on the chats and um it was great I I love that you guys keep it going the the chatter going it's it made me realize like going to this Festival uh you know sure there's films and filmmakers and all this stuff going on but it's really the people that attend the people that decide to let I film go through their eyeballs um that makes it work and you guys make it work and I very much appreciate that momentum and keeping things going and talking and the comments I like to experience it live and so I'm actually going to start doing live shows starting Thursday um like in-person shows wearing a mask um Thursday and then Saturday if you're in Raleigh there's a food Hall that I'll be showing some films at and I'll have more details later this week if you're in town anyhow so you're not here to listen to me talk about showing films you want me to show films so we're going to start off with a exciting or depressing film depends on how you look at it about circus animals thank you enjoy some of the men who trained the other kind to the elephants they take good the little circus ponies travel by themselves in their own boxcar they have their own trainers too their trainers take good care of them and teach them to do tricks the circus has many many show horses it takes two boxcars to carry all of them the elephants walk from the train to the circus grounds count them as they walk down the street did you count 13 elephants the animals are also part of the circus how many can you name elephants are very strong they can do heavy work jumbo is big and strong she helps unload the tents jumbo pulls the heavy tent roll from the wagon she also has learned to unroll the big tent jumbo pushes the tent roll with her trunk and her two front feet our trainer has taught her to roll it out straight he has taught her to use both her right foot and her left foot elephants do many kinds of work in setting up the circus this wagon is so heavy that two elephants are needed to move it on the days the jumbo has hard work to do her trainer gives her two and one-half bales of hay to eat when she is not working she gets only one and one half Bales each day besides the hay jumbo eats lots of grain fruits and vegetables jumbo weighs about as much as four large horses the trainers give the elephants a drink of water three times a day jumbo sucks the water up into her trunk and then blows it into her mouth each elephant will drink about one half barrel of water each time he is watered now jumbo is practicing one of the stunts she will do in the big tent When The Circus starts jumbo must get ready for her part in the Big Show but first she must be clean lie down jumbo lie down that's it because her skin is very thick the broom does not hurt her in fact she enjoys the brushing jumbo likes to be clean elephant's ears are large they can hear very well in their native jungle home their fine hearing helps to protect them from danger now that jumbo is clean it is time to get her ready to take her part in the Big Show Jumbo's colorful circus blanket is carefully folded so it will be easy for her trainer to put it on her back jumbo helps the trainer by keeping still while he works she is proud of her beautiful circus blanket when the blanket is in place the trainer tells jumbo to stand up jumbo has learned to obey her trainers they have taught her to do many tricks in the Big Show this circus also has many camels the camels have their own trainers to take care of them the camel circus blanket is made to fit over the two large humps on its back the camel with two humps is called a Bactrian camel these camels live in dry desert regions there is little water on the desert camels can go four or five days without drinking water for this reason they are used to carry Goods on long trips across the desert that tree and camels do not travel fast but they carry heavy loads in our country there is plenty of water these circus camels get water every day it is much better for them to have water every day camels eat leafy hay Alfalfa and rolled grains the little circus Ponies are getting their share of the hay too long before the Big Show starts many children come to the circus grounds watch out there don't get too close the trainer is teaching this beautiful horse to dance other horses learn to rear only the most beautiful horses are used in the circus show this horse is a palomino he must be kept clean this young trainer is proud of his horse he washes the horse every day to make him look his best the trainer brushes the horse's mane to make it look smooth and shiny now the horse is ready for his blanket notice that the part of the blanket which covers the horse's head has holes cut in it so the horse can see soon he will go into the Big Ten his tricks here is a circus clown in the show he wears a policeman suit he wears great big the clown brushes his dog every day to keep his coat shine it's his dog and takes good care of him now all right so that film was super spicy I mean obviously it was missing the tail in the head and had lots of splices throughout uh so I don't even really know the name of it I'm it was called Circus animals on the the uh can but I have no idea so it's it's fascinating um I think kids love animals but what's interesting is how many films show animals in zoos and in circuses uh and not in their natural habitats this could be because filmmakers don't have the resources to go to India Africa um Central America South America and that it's convenient for them to just go to the zoo or just go to the circus and film some stuff um but there's a lot of films about animals and circuses and in zoos which is kind of how kids sees saw animals um but kind of sad uh so behind me I have a film set up that keeps losing its uh thread tension so we're gonna try to bring this up and watch it um enjoy [Music] foreign once upon a time there was an evil genius who dreamed of creating a diabolical new poison so powerful it would destroy anyone who breathed it he wanted to pollute the air where people lived and worked and played and he wanted a subtle poison that would be slow to kill formula he thought was so complex that despite his cunning he could not find it [Music] laughs [Music] [Music] then one day The Evil Genius took a fateful cigarette break okay and with the unwitting help of his assistant he discovered the perfect poison with which to pollute the world his Discovery the Insidious byproduct of other people's tobacco habit secondhand smoke [Music] [Laughter] all smoke is the product of burning material and it comes from many different sources but whether you breathe it in the air or inhale it from a cigarette too much smoke can kill you [Music] some people think that being hooked on Tobacco is a personal matter and no one else's concerned after all whose Life Is It Anyway [Music] [Music] but even someone who insists on smoking cigarettes around other people probably would not willingly breathe other kinds of pollution all right [Applause] [Music] we've passed laws like the Clean Air Act to protect people from outdoor pollution [Music] what about indoor pollution after all most people spend 90 percent of their time indoors [Music] it might surprise you to learn that both persons are about to smoke that cigarette the one holding the cigarette inhales mainstream smoke the non-smoker inhales what is put in the air by the burning cigarette this is called side stream or secondhand smoke [Music] some people believe that only the smoker is harmed by smoking not true one person's poison is another's pollution in fact second-hand tobacco smoke is our number one contributor to indoor air pollution [Music] a smoke-filled room can be worse than a smoggy city hazardous for everyone who breathes [Music] if only there were a magic way to clear the air but who are you gonna call [Music] after all smoke pollution from cigarettes pipes and cigars often occurs at far higher levels indoors than pollution from Factory smoke or car exhaust Outdoors although tobacco smoke is as toxic as industrial air pollution it is only now beginning to be monitored and controlled foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] what makes the pollution from tobacco smoke so dangerous to begin with there are over 4 000 toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke in my Benzene ammonia arsenic cyanide formaldehyde Vinyl chloride and nicotine the addictive drug and tobacco plus millions of tiny particles known as tar many of which are cancer-causing agents secondhand smoke from the lit end of the cigarette contains twice the tar and nicotine and many times the carbon monoxide as mainstream smoke the reason when a smoker inhales he draws smoke through the cigarette and filter trapping some particles also the higher temperature causes more complete and hence less dirty combustion hmm hmm secondhand smoke however escaped from the burning end of the cigarette when it is not being inhaled it is not filtered by anything and because a smoldering cigarette Burns at a lower temperature than the one being inhaled it generates more particulate matter and more gases especially carbon monoxide for these reasons secondhand smoke is the major cause of indoor air pollution but that's not all a cigarette smoker takes eight or nine Puffs per cigarette only smoking for about 24 seconds meanwhile the cigarette pollutes the air with secondhand smoke continuously for 12 minutes and the pollution Ling is long after the cigarette is gone there is no question that being a smoker is more dangerous than breathing secondhand smoke nevertheless non-smokers who work in Smoky offices are forced to inhale the equivalent of several cigarettes a day in secondhand smoke foreign non-smokers can sustain significant lung damage like other forms of air pollution secondhand tobacco smoke has many well-documented ill effects on health [Music] it aggravates emphysema acute respiratory disease asthma and hay fever it can also cause burning eyes and nasal passages nausea headaches and make allergies to other substances unbearable everything that is true for adults is especially true for children babies breathe more rapidly than adults and therefore inhale more air and more pollution in comparison to their total body weight [Music] the babies of parents who smoke at home are more likely to get lung disease especially bronchitis and pneumonia in general children who are exposed to secondhand smoke at home are sick more often than other children [Music] some evidence even suggests that the children of parents who smoke are more likely to develop cancer when they grow up [Music] [Laughter] in fact a study done at the Environmental Protection Agency suggests that breathing secondhand smoke could cause up to 5 000 lung cancer deaths a year in non-smokers there was one final victim the ultimate victim of involuntary smoking The Unborn Child [Music] foreign but smoking has one very powerful and important friend the tobacco industry and it's running scared if changing attitudes about secondhand smoke caused every smoker to give up just one cigarette a day that would amount to more than one billion fewer packs sold per year in the United States alone thank you with steaks like these it's no wonder the industry spends nearly three billion dollars a year convincing smokers that it's sexy and smart to smoke and that they can pollute the air without considering non-smokers [Music] foreign [Music] okay [Music] sometimes it's hard to believe that smoking was ever considered socially acceptable behavior [Music] someone asked permission to smoke say no if not asked non-smokers should let the smoker know how they feel [Music] it's just as important to say no at home non-smoking wives married to smokers have two to three times the risk of developing lung cancer as women whose husbands do not smoke the National Academy of Sciences the Surgeon General and the World Health Organization have all concluded that involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke is dangerous to health and should be avoided now is the time to speak out and put cigarette smoking where it belongs [Music] [Music] [Applause] exposure to tobacco smoke is similar to radiation in the sense that there is no safe level of exposure the best protection is to avoid it altogether functions [Applause] [Music] unfortunately there is no magic solution to the Insidious problem of secondhand smoke the real solution rests with the individual if smokers are allowed to pollute the air without restriction others will continue to suffer the ill effects the challenge today is to translate the right to breathe clean air into social action by taking action non-smokers send a strong message to the True Villain the tobacco industry the industry has taken an aggressive stance against non-smokers rights after all it has the most to lose and won't give up without a fight but times are changing despite opposition from the tobacco industry people are demanding and getting laws to clear the air of second-hand smoke indoors as non-smokers stand up for their right to breathe clean air smoking will disappear altogether [Music] smoking dies completely away don't allow your air to become polluted by the Unseen poisons of second-hand smoke [Music] hahaha if you choose not to smoke don't be a passive smoker don't smoke second hand [Music] foreign [Laughter] foreign I had no idea this is a film I have not seen so this is why we watch films here is I pulled I just pulled that off the shelf I said I don't think I've seen this I I don't think I've shown this um and Jack Klugman who three years after he made this film uh had throat cancer uh and lost mostly lost his voice but eventually was able to get it back but it was very raspy uh and um continued to act um and you know we we think the throat cancer was from smoking um but would ultimately uh took Jack Klugman was prostate cancer and so that segue is into a story about a fantastic Fest um the opening night there were a bunch of cocktail robots uh robots that would automatically make things that you would get in a bar so they would make mix a drink or they would uh one of them made um a uh a crepe which was really awesome uh but there was one that was called prostate hero and it was essentially a rubber relief of a man's uh but uh in genitals uh and it was hooked up to a little computer and what you would do is you would take your glut put on a glove and you would put your hand and you would check or massage uh this butt's prostate um and it would give you directions just like Guitar Hero which direction you were supposed to go and uh based on your score it would mix a drink the higher the score the higher the alcohol contact and uh that drink would [Music] um basically pour through the rubber um torsos uh genitals into a cup uh what you would drink so that was that was really crazy uh I have another one I'll I'll tell you about um after we watched this wonderful film we get back to the films in less about yeah anyways um this is a corn farmer enjoy [Music] Ed each spring George Stone plants nearly 600 acres of corn his modern well-equipped farm is located in the heart of the Corn growing bells of North America The Hoppers of the planter are filled with hybrid Seed corn this is corn which has been scientifically developed and selected for use as seeds this is an eight row corn plant four kernels of seed corn from each of the eight Hoppers are planted every three feet along the road a liquid weed killer is preyed on each Road using the eight-row planter Mr Stone can plant 150 acres of corn in a day's work that's almost a quarter of a square mile so farmhouse nearby are the seat yards for cattle the corn Mr Stone grows stays on his farm where it is fed to livestock to battle them for markets for many corn farmers are also soft raises these cattle are eating silent which is corn that has been chopped up sauce and all it comes from last year's corn crop feeding the cattle is one of Brian's songs daily chores this is edgestone he's feeding corn to the pig the pigs eat their corn shells and they eat it from wooden feeders which protects the corn from the rain often the corn farmer can make a far better profit from his crops by feeding it to livestock and selling the corn fattened beef and pork than he can by selling the corn itself already how about some dinner yes it's all ready tomorrow mostly fair in the west and Southport hey well it's already in the 60s showers and some thunderstorms warm and humid over Most states this afternoon possibly locally in the days following planting the Sun the earth and the rain do their work and soon the new corn is up thank you Mr Stone cultivates around the young plant the cultivating keeps down the growth of weeds and grass in between the roads several times a year Mr Stone sourced his corn satin pods for Market some are chosen to remain on the farm for more fastening or for breeding While others are sent off the market they will be shipped to the stockyard which are currently offering the best price for home [Music] Replacements are born on the farm twice a year the heavy saw is kept from rolling over on her piglets by this wall life for a young pig in the fairling house doesn't seem to be a particularly hard one foreign in a few weeks the pigs have grown enough to run outside at first they nibble on spilled kernels of corn around the feeder but soon a smart one finds the source of supply by August the corn is thick and tall this spray kills weeds growing between the roads the corn is also sprayed with an insecticide to kill insects that attack the stalks and leaves the spraying machine is built high off the ground so that it can pass over the corn without damaging the salt driving away from their Farm the stones pass between fields of ripening corn most of the way to town this town is the county seat the work of County government is centered in the courthouse the stores along Main Street indicate that this is the shopping and trading center for the families of the surrounding Farm area all right boys many corn farmers are also in the business of raising Superior Livestock for markets and interest in prize animals starts Young [Music] each boy has raised The Seer he shows at the County 4-H Fair [Music] okay you're it you're number one man right that winner is very slow [Applause] the first corn is harvested while it's still green this machine Cuts stocks cobs and all and chops them into fine bits this chopped up corn is called silage and will be fed to cattle [Music] the silage is stored in silo silage is blown up the pipe to the top of the silo a month later the corn in the fields has been further dried by the Sun most of the corn crop is harvested after it has dried because dried corn can be stored for long periods of time without spoiling this corn picker takes two rows at a time and strips the ears from the stop [Music] then rotating cylinders inside the machine rub the kernels off the cob the shelled corn is lifted through a pipe and collected in the wagon drawn behind the Picker [Music] machine operated by one man can pick and shell 15 acres of corn a day it would take 20 minutes working without the machine to do the same job because of the new machines the corn farmer today plants and harvests far more corn than ever before the shelled corn is also stored in silos there are five silos on Mr Stone's Farm yet every kernel of corn stored in them will be used during the next year to fatten his lifestyle [Music] Mr Stone ships a load of his corn-fatened cattle every few weeks during the summer and fall foreign [Music] the truck delivers the cattle to the Stockyards a hundred miles away thousands of head of cattle are bought and sold in these yards every day [Music] often Mr Stone goes along to see that he gets the best price possible for his animals and to acquaint himself with the current market condition for the corn farmer has to be a businessman as well as a farmer stock raiser and mechanic marketing role Mr Stone keeps detailed records of the buying and selling of his lifestyle late Autumn and still the Corn Harvest goes on [Music] CE the ears off the stocks and trust them most of the ears of corn will be ground up carb and all before being fed to livestock but meanwhile they are stored whole in buildings called corn cribs [Music] a conveyor and an elevator carry the corn away from the wagon and into the Corn Crib all together Mr Stone will store 1700 tons of corn this year but even that won't be enough to feed his life though you'll have to buy more from corn farmers who raise no livestock of Their Own not long after the Corn Harvest is finished the first snows come [Music] these cattle have just arrived from ranches in the west they will be fattened over the winter on this season's corn crop and sold next summer when they first arrived they are herded into the field to clean up any bits of corn left behind by the picking machine using Modern Machinery the corn farmer today can raise record crops of corn some of this corn may be used commercially in industry and some may be processed for human consumption but on many corn Farms the entire crop is stored to be fed to livestock to fatten them for marketing for often it is the sale of corn fattened livestock instead of the direct sale of corn that brings the corn farmer the best return for his labor [Music] all right uh so I have another thing from uh fantastic Fest another cocktail robot uh and I need to bring it up but I need to immediately kind of resize it so I'm gonna have to show it to you but I'm gonna pause the video uh pretty quickly so here's the hot dog electric chair no calls from the governor all right it looks like it's it's pretty good um so the premise of this is that you get a hot dog and um you can they strap in uh one or two hot dogs into this electric chair and you're gonna see what happens oops foreign the uh it basically is sparking uh the little Electro there's sparking so you see Sparks I couldn't capture it very well uh on the my camera but this and then it starts smoking and then the the grease starts pouring out of it like blood um and the thing is that the camera does not capture is the fact that the smell it smells like burning hair it's really really gross and and horrible but I ate it anyways because I don't like food going to waste and um it tasted good but it still had a burnt hair smell to it and I'm not sure exactly what was burning to make that smell um I don't know if it was the skin or what it was but it didn't smell right um and so I was talking to the guy who invented it uh and he's from Europe and supposedly there's a whole group of people in Europe that are making these I'm sure there's people in the United States as well but uh they're having that conference I think or a convention in uh early next year in Vienna and they're all going to convene with all their robots um and uh yeah so anyways when he originally made this device it was just a little electric chair with uh hot dogs in it um and people were disappointed that it wasn't rocking back and forth so he then added the feature of it rocking back and forth like it's like this is it so um that was another thing from Fantastic Fest uh I might have some other things to share uh probably not today but um there you go uh let's see what do we got Let's uh let's mellow things out a little bit um I'm so excited to be back that oh I need to kind of bring it down a little bit so let's learn about hibernation and other forms of dormancy enjoy all animals must eat in order to live but there are times when they cannot find food animals have different ways of living through such times for instance this Spade foot toad can find food only in water when the hot summer sun dries up its Pond the toad has a special way of surviving the period of drought using its horny feet the Spade foot will dig itself into the ground it will remain buried until rains come again making food available me amphibians such as the Spade foot toad can serve their energy in times of food shortage by burying themselves once they have dug a resting place they go into a very deep sleep call starvation during excavation the almost heartbeat slow and it breathes only occasionally some animals must eat more often than others to conserve energy a bat go through deep sleep each day as night approaches the bat's twitching muscles help to bring its heartbeat and breathing back to normal complete Awakening takes several minutes then the bat is ready to fly off search of its evening meal whether they search for food during the night or in the right daylight many animals gather more food in summer than they need for daily living the golden mantled ground squirrel stuffs its cheek pouches with seeds to store in its burrow the winter ground a squirrel eats more food than it needs the excess is stored in the body as fat reserves of fat help animals survive the food of shortages of Long Cold Winters some birds avoid this food scarcity by flying to warmer areas where food is more plentiful this is called migration but most animals do not migrate for example a frog May lie dormant or sleeping beneath the ice of a pond the frog is a cold-blooded animal his body temperature changes with that of its surroundings heartbeat and breathing slow down gradually as the weather gets colder if the pond freezes completely the Frog May burrow into mud at the bottom where it will remain dormant until spring the fence lizard is also a cold-blooded animal like many other reptiles the Dermot lizard will stay in a crevice or a cave its life process is merely slowed down during winter many insects spend the winter in cracks of rocks by the time of the first snowfall most of the insects and other animals will have found a means of protecting themselves from Winter's cold beneath the loose bark of a tree some insects seek shelter although this Beetle appears dead it is only dormant we call such adaptation to periods of food shortage overwintering the spider is also dormant on this overturned Boulder is the nest of a mud dauber wasp the WASP is in a resting stage it is called a pupa for many insects the winter resting stage is part of the life cycle unless exposed to Winter's cold a caterpillar cannot emerge from its cocoon as a butterfly in Spring long after other animals have taken shelter for the winter the bear is still active but soon it too will seek shelter thick layers of fat and heavy fur keep the bear warm in its den where it will doze for most of the winter the winter sleep of many other animals is similar to the Bears although the raccoon may sleep in the hollow of a tree several weeks at a time any slight disturbance will easily awaken it deep under the snow many creatures are sleeping in their Burrows some mammals such as the ground squirrel and are a special kind of winter sleep called hibernation during the long months of winter the mammal is insulated from coal by the layer of fat stored on its body the fat also supplies fuel for heat and energy this deep sleep hibernation is its way of conserving fuel when hibernating the mammal usually curls itself into a tight ball if we watch The Awakening of this ground squirrel we can learn more about hibernation at first the heartbeat increases very slightly during hibernation the heart beats only five times per minute although the normal rate may exceed 300. we will use a drum to indicate the animal's heartbeat breathing starts to increase from only one breath per minute to the normal rate of more than 150 breaths per minute foreign as the mammal awakens its body heat increases through the quickening activity of muscles beginning first with the heart and chest body temperature is now slightly above freezing normal temperature is over 100 degrees Fahrenheit the muscular activity and warming extend outwards from the heart and chest to the front parts of the body then later to the hind parts as the breathing becomes faster and deeper other signs of Awakening occur the front paws begin to move the motion of the Four Paws is stronger then muscles begin to move in other parts of the body the animal's nose and facial muscles begin to Twitch a slight movement of behind foot begins breathing and heart rate may even be higher than normal as the muscles work to increase body temperature finally all the muscles are active producing heat and speeding The Awakening after several hours the ground squirrel is bright-eyed and fully awake most hibernating mammals waken every few weeks yeah but it's still cold the animal will go into a deep sleep again when spring comes animals resume their active lives beginning Anew the cycles of Life which for many will include hibernation or some other form of dormancy um yeah that uh that drum was weird at the beginning I was like is that is that a problem on the soundtrack and then the whole like the animals waking up and then it went faster I was like ah
