[Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Are you ready for the return of the Lord Jesus Christ? The greatest prophecy in the Bible is not far from fulfillment. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God, and the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so shall we ever be with the Lord. Are you ready for his return? Someday soon, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, life will be suddenly changed for all of us. Events unspeakably strange and startling will occur with amazing rapidity. Speeding trains will plunge unsuspecting passengers into a black eternity as Christian engineers are snatched from the throttle. [Music] Operations will be halted midway as believing surgeons are caught up to be forever with the Lord. Even the ordinary routine of life will have its annoying interruptions. There will be milk deliveries unmade. [Music] There will be stores remaining closed. Transportation service will be greatly impaired by the absence of Christian motormen. Housework will be left undone because Christian maids have been promoted to higher realms. After the rapture, there will be broken homes with fathers missing from some, mothers missing from others. babies snatched from others. In some homes, Bible lovers, even as they read the blessed word, will be transported into the very presence of the one of whom they read. [Music] Churches will be the scene of much confusion and bewilderment. In some unsaved people will wait anxiously for Christian pastors who failed to make their appearance at Sunday service. Death will be robbed of its praise as those asleep in Christ are raised to meet him in the air. What will the rapture mean to Christians? To some it will mean joyful relief from suffering and pain from weeping and sighing, from heartbreaking poverty, from disappointment. To all Christians, the rapture will mean removal from the presence of sin, drinking, murder, gambling, unbelief. [Music] To all Christians, it will mean release from wars and rumors of war. That's the joyful side of it, Christian. But there is also another side of the picture, a tragically sad side. After the rapture, we will have no more opportunity to tell the lost of Jesus. To think that some will be left to go through unspeakable torment because you and I failed to tell them of Jesus. your son perhaps or your daughter, your husband, your wife, your closest pal, your fellow worker, your neighbor. and to think that their blood will be required at your hand. Remember that after the rapture there will be no more opportunity to pass out tracks to preach about the Lord Jesus Christ to give to missions. [Music] to pray for the lost. Christians, are you ready for the Lord's return? Will he find you busily engaged in fulfilling his purpose for you? redeeming the time because the days are evil. Living your life for him. [Music] Will he find you watching and waiting for his return? Christian, are you ready for his return? Nevertheless, when the Son of Man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? [Music] Unsaved friend, are you ready for the Lord's return? What will the rapture mean to you? It will mean that you will be left behind to pass through tribulation such as the world has never seen. For then shall there be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. You think the world is seeing tribulation now? War, famine, pestilence. This is nothing compared with what shall be then. The sea will become as blood of a dead man, and all life within it will die. Rivers and fountains will be turned into blood. Men will be scorched with great heat. [Music] Men will be covered with noisome and grievous sores. The islands of the sea will fade away. There will be lightning and thunder and a great earthquake such as it was not since man was upon the earth. Are you ready to pass through all these horrible experiences and then go on to a black eternity? Or are you ready now to accept the Lord Jesus as your savior and be caught up to meet him in the air when he comes for his own? How do you become one of his own? But as many as received him, to them gave you power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. [Music] Why not accept him as your savior and write in the tablets of your heart? Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus. I am ready. [Music] Therefore, be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of Man cometh. Healthy and tender. Jesus is calling for me. He is waiting and watching walking for you and for me. Come home. [Music] We who are weary come Jesus is calling. [Music] Hello everybody. I had to do that um just for a joke. Uh that so uh I'm Skip Alzheimer and we watch old 16 millimeter films together and that film uh I used to have in my collection but the vinegar just destroyed it utterly destroyed it and called it called it home. And so, um, there was another time that I showed a film about the rapture called Future Tents, and that actually brought down the stream due to copyright stuff. So, I I found this online and kind of tried to tweak it a little bit, make it a little bit more tolerable. But unfortunately, yeah, I don't have that film anymore. I wish I did. I love it. Absolutely love it. And so Baptista Films is actually a big deal because they were one of the first big educational Christian film companies and they were so popular they actually licensed their own version their own Baptista 16 millimeter projector and uh so there's other films that they did. Um I have one uh do I have one? No, I think Appar has one called Door to Heaven and it's very similar. It's it's a very evangelical. Uh the people the people that started Baptista Films used to like hang out like in Time Square and do these evangelical uh sermons and you know call people in and try to get them to witness and all that stuff. So yeah, this is straight up American evangelism. But, uh, yeah, the fact that they had their own projectors, you can sometimes find them, Baptista projectors. Uh, I wouldn't run film through them, but, uh, there you go. Uh, I know most of you have not been raptured. Um, but some of you might have gone to your county fair because it's September. So, uh, let's visit a county fair. Enjoy. [Music] A county fair is fun to visit. Everything is so colorful and exciting. There's so much to see and so many things to do. You can spend a whole day at the fair. County fairs started long ago when farmers would gather together to show off their best crops, livestock, and homemade goods. They competed for prizes and recognition. Today, it's only a little different. The vegetables and other homemade goods are still entered in competition and attract a lot of visitors. Derek, Lisa, and Tom have come to see the displays of home canned jams and other goods made by 4 members. Although they are good to look at, Tom thinks they would taste better. Look at all the different kinds of honey. Light, dark, honey and combs and honey bears. There's even a display of live bees busy making more honey right there. [Music] Let's go have a look at some of the livestock. Ha! Everybody's getting a bath. It must be almost time for the judging. Each owner is very careful about washing and brushing the animals hair shining clean. The sheep's wool is cleaned and fluffed up with a special kind of comb. This is called currying. Many of the animals were raised as part of a 4 project. This means the children must feed and care for them properly so they will grow as big and look as good as possible. It's a lot of hard work, but now it's nearly showtime and all the work will soon be rewarded. It'll take a long time to give away all those ribbons. Right now, Holstein calavs are being judged. These heers will grow up to become dairy cows. So, the judge looks at each calf for features that may mean more milk production. Size, shape, posture, color, build. Beef cattle are judged in the same way, but the standards of perfection are different. Each animal is awarded points, and the best score wins. Here, more cattle are being read for judging. Although they are bigger, they get the same careful preparation. They are brushed or curried to make them look bigger. Their feet are sprayed to keep the flies away so they will stand still during the judging. It's just like a beauty contest. They all line up for the judge. He looks them over carefully for size, weight, shape, posture, and other standards of perfection. Points are awarded. A decision is made. The junior champion. It has taken a long time and a lot of hard work to raise this prize-winning steer from a little calf, but now it has paid off. There are many other kinds of animals displayed and judged at the fair. This type of chicken is bred for meat production rather than egg laying. Its size, shape, and color are right for a winner. Its owner has taken good care of it. The judge awards a blue ribbon, meaning it meets the standards of perfection for this category. Rabbits are next. They are also being raised for meat. So, the judge looks for the best size and shape. [Music] Very good work. Another blue ribbon. These sheep have covers on them to keep their fluffed and curried coats clean until judging time. It often takes several hours to judge the sheep. They are bred for both wool and meat production, so they must be judged on both. Size and shape are important, as well as color and thickness of wool. [Music] The 4 boys and girls learn a lot about how to raise better animals each year. They keep the best animals to be the parents of the new stock for next year, and they may sell the others. Even though they are away from home, the constant care goes on. Horses must be exercised and the barns cleaned out regularly. The fair lasts a week or sometimes more, so the owners come to stay with their animals at the fairgrounds. This goat, like the dairy cows, must be milked twice a day. Some of the milk will be fed to the young goats, and the bystanders will also get to try some. The horses probably receive the most attention of all. This is the real beauty contest. Nothing is overlooked that might make a winner. And as you can see, almost anything goes. Here they are. Not a hair is out of place. But this owner can't help worrying a bit. There are many events and the judges are watching everything. Size, shape, posture, coloration, and movements. There are certainly some smartlooking ponies here. And the choice won't be easy. What a thrill to receive the championship. Even a second place ribbon makes this owner proud. >> Over here is the largest class of horses, the draft horses. Draft horses were used to pull wagons and heavy loads many years ago. But today, they're not used much for that because farmers use tractors and trucks instead. [Music] At the fair, it's just like old times as they're hitched up again just to show how it used to be. In spite of their size, they are quite gentle and the children love to pet them. This Clydesdale looks very sharp in his harness and he's anxious to get started. [Music] Here they come. The drivers are judged on their costumes and the harness and how they make the horses prance. The judges make a decision. Next will be the teams and wagons. Here, the drivers are judged on their time and skill in maneuvering the wagons. They must work fast but carefully. Backing up this way is a lot harder than in a car or truck. [Music] The children have enjoyed every minute, and now they're off to see a different kind of fun. [Music] The merrygoround is pretty with all the lights and colored horses. [Music] It's all over much too quickly. But now they're ready to try something else. This one is just like a real helicopter. [Music] The octopus ride is bigger and wilder. Hang on tight. [Music] Time out for a rest. I think cotton candy is a special treat after they've had more nutritious snacks. [Music] Here's another ride. The children are ready to try this one by themselves. [Music] And mom is just as glad to watch. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Oh, Derek won. Hooray. He gets a prize, too. But it's not a blue ribbon. Now it's Tom's turn at the baseball throw. [Music] >> All down. He lets Lisa have his prize. It's almost as big as she is. Well, it's been a full and exciting day at the fair, but now it's time to go home. Yeah, my county fair. Well, Wake County is where we are, but that's where the state fair is because we're the capital in Raleigh, so we don't get a county fair. Um, let's see. Uh, so this next film is I showed it a long time ago, but it's a it's great. We just recently scanned it. Uh, it features Jim Stringer, the guy who wrote the words to Shake Hands with Danger and wrote the music. Um, and he actually narrates it. And this one, he his soundtrack is mostly synthesizer. It's I like bikes, but my name is Ike. I'm a bike. As drivers, you're going to see a lot of me. Bikes and cars are a great part of our style of life. We like freedom and mobility, but we have to get along together. [Music] I like bikes. Ooh. some bump gliding fancy free. I like bikes. They're number one with me. [Music] I like bikes. I'm just a biking nut. I like bikes. >> But I like bike. And then when Lisa was five, >> I like bikes. No, no, no. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Lisa's 10 now. And >> I like bikes. [Music] [Applause] [Music] At 15, she likes bikes, but she loves cars. [Music] [Music] When she gets her license, will she change her likes? Will she still like bikes? We'll see. I like bikes, but little things upset him. It isn't only when I'm wet that I'm easily upset. And just let me try to travel on gravel or tangle my chain or run across a roadway drain or fallen leaves. Sheesh, what a pain. Little things upset us. Oh, [Music] [Applause] we bought bikes. Why can't we Why don't we Why can't we pay attention? Why can't we seem to notice a sign beside the road is meant for us? [Applause] [Music] [Applause] The signs all point the way to accident prevention. [Music] Why? Oh, why oh why can't we pay attention? Until [Music] the day we do, I'm afraid it's up to you. Hey, good girl. Again, I ought to mention that you should pay attention because sometimes we don't. They suit me to a tea. But safetywise, please realize you never should trust me. I like bikes, but I like bikes, but I like bikes, but so to make the going safer for each big and little shaver, for all the golden oldies and the tikes. Though the biker may be wrong, if you like us, you belong. So say what we've been saying all along. I like bikes. And then act like it, please. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Oh, I love Jim Stringer, but man, there's entirely too much synth in that film. Way too much. I mean, and that So, he did the the soundtrack. So, that's not only did he narrate it, but he also did the soundtrack. So, it uh yeah, it's a it's a bit much, but you know, uh if you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Okay. Uh let's see. This is a film that I scanned this morning, and uh yeah. Uh I haven't really I kind of get a gist of what it is, but I don't know. We'll see where where we go. This is called the volunteer story. Enjoy. [Music] Mama, >> I'm hungry. Mama, please get up. Mama, please get up. Help. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] I want my sister. I want my sister. But my sister, >> this family came to the attention of our agency when the school called and requested the help of a social worker before I became a volunteer coordinator. I was a social worker who answered such calls. And believe me, I know how she felt on that first visit. >> Correct. No matter how many times a social worker is confronted with a family in these circumstances, she can't help feeling compassion for the people forced by circumstances into a narrow hopeless world and perhaps frustration because there is so much to be done and so little help to do it. Consider this family. This woman, like so many mothers, sick, deserted by her husband, four children, nowhere to turn. A woman immobilized, trapped in this life of hopelessness, unable to cope with the world. Mary, the oldest girl, in school when she feels like it, the rest of the time, who knows? A girl already well along on the road, leading right back to the same life as that of her mother. Susan in school almost never. A child physically crippled by a bone defect and mentally crippled by her environment. Without proper medical treatment, it is probable that Susan will not live long enough to repeat that pattern of despair. But he will. The signs are already there. The circle of his world includes what he sees, what he hears, what he feels, and not one of these teach him how to break the pattern of his daily environment. This baby, though appearing healthy, is actually suffering from dietary deficiencies which can lead to early childhood diseases. The social worker can arrange for heat, for lights, for medical aid, and for food. >> It's plugged in. Your light's out. Electricity is off. All right. >> The Social Services Agency provides the necessary assistance for a family to survive. But the needs of many families such as this one cannot be fulfilled by a social worker alone. It was an all too familiar problem. No public agency can give all the support that some families need. That would require many more employees in a greatly increased budget. However, something had to be done for the Romero family. The social worker came to me since I was the volunteer coordinator in this area. My job was to find someone to help a volunteer. How old is Ro? >> After assisting Mrs. Romero to recover her health, the social worker brought a volunteer who wanted to help the family. >> Yes. >> Huh. >> Do you do finger painting? >> Yes. >> And you are. >> What is there that causes someone to care and is just caring enough? Can that concern be transferred to meaningful action? Consider this volunteer. >> What do they call it? She and the social worker have agreed that their primary goals are to overcome this family's feelings of hopelessness and despair. But how do you instill a sense of hope? How do you build a feeling of pride? The volunteer begins by making possible the small achievements such as selecting food for its nutritional value. [Music] The volunteer knows that to build a sense of achievement, she must not do everything herself. She must work with the parent, helping her develop a feeling of pride as well as the necessary skills. And when together they solve one problem, they go on to the next. >> It's very simple. All you do is follow the line and then it's usually a straight line. Very good. You're on the way to having a skirt. >> Consider transportation. This is a major problem for many of those existing on a substandard income. Of what use is a distant clinic expert hospital care when public transportation is not adequate and the family car won't run? Transportation volunteers are available on call such as this one driving Susan and her mother to the hospital. Transportation alone is often not enough. Child care is needed for the children left at home. The volunteer helps the parent. She does not become a substitute for the parent. We sometimes forget that people who have never been outside their own narrow world may not know how to cope with an alien environment. Coming into a large impersonal medical institution is confusing to anyone, but more so to someone of limited experience. The transportation volunteer can be of further help by guiding the family through the routines for admittance. [Music] >> How can a person escape from the limitations of poverty? For the young, the answer is education. But from the restricted point of view of their environment, the value of an education is not easily seen. >> Aristophanes was the father of satire. And very often when he would write his plays, the government, of course, the satire was against the government. They would lock him up because it was satire of course is one of the elements or one of the purposes of it is to destroy. It is difficult for Mary to concentrate and to be interested in school when there are so many problems at home. >> Then he looks like he hasn't yet. >> Get out. >> Why choose the long discipline of an education when she can more easily drop out. >> Get out here. >> Yes, Mrs. Wheeler. >> Well, I've been a family volunteer for quite some time, but I know that when I finished the volunteer training program, I was a bit worried about knowing exactly what to do. Perhaps you could explain how we work as a team. >> Good point. You're not left alone out there. You are a part of a team. You work with a social worker and the volunteer coordinator. And it is my job as a coordinator to supervise the overall program. The social worker requests specific types of help for the family and I determine which volunteer will help. The volunteer can discuss her observations with the social worker or me when she sees things that need to be done. The right of persons served includes privacy and respect. A volunteer does not talk to friends about the private details of any family they serve. >> Also, the volunteer must not promise anything that cannot be fulfilled. motivator in this. You know how many pints in one quart? 16. >> A volunteer tutor may be able to help Mary with her immediate studies, but more importantly, the tutor can help Mary develop a desire for an education. >> One pint equals 16 oz. One quart equals 2 pints. So if one quart equals 2 pints and one pint equals 16 oz. >> So how many ounces in one quart? >> 32. >> Right. >> Often those who do realize the value of an education require special help. And for this reason, volunteers from groups who understand the problem. Groups such as the Future Teachers of America Club are tutoring children from lowincome areas in classes organized by the volunteer program. Volunteers working through private institutions like the settlement house are also helping in these programs. Working with younger children, they are countering the effects of poverty by broadening the child's horizons, creating a new environment before hopelessness and apathy become a way of life. [Music] The share a trip volunteer program provides the opportunity for a child to go places with other families and other children. >> Here a volunteer family of four is sharing their day with Roy Romero. Charlie. >> Most of these children, like Roy, come from homes where there is no father and they desperately need to learn the father role. >> Are you going to get a hot dog? >> You are. >> I'm not. >> We're going to get everybody a hot dog, right? >> I'm not. >> Roy will become an adult and have his family. But if he has never known a father, will he be a good father to children of his own? >> No. No. They'd run away with you. >> Look at the red. >> The big one. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> In many cases, people are unable to cope with the outside world because of language barriers. This woman is unable to get help for her sick daughter. She wants medication for her daughter's earache, but she is unable to communicate her needs. >> I'm sorry, I don't understand Spanish. Do you want this? Volunteer speaks both English and Spanish and can help by teaching. I want to buy some aspirin. in English. Aspirin. Aspirin. Repeat that in English. >> Aspirin. >> Aspirin. >> Aspirin. >> Aspirin. >> Aspirin. >> And that's why you, the volunteers, are urged to keep your eyes open for people who will help. just people who know how to meet the everyday problems of living and people who are willing to share that knowledge with someone who doesn't. Many of the women volunteers are able to interest their husbands in becoming volunteers. >> My husband has been helping me. He works for the telephone company and he's talked a lot of other men into being share a trip volunteers. Hey kid, what day about Saturday? >> Saturday set 10:00 in the morning. We pick the kids up. For a group of fatherless boys, this is a special day. [Applause] off to the playing field at any time. >> The Dodgers had an edge at home. They won six of nine in the turn it around in Atlanta. >> They've got a pretty good ball club. Montreal beat Pittsburgh 4 to2 winner Ellis the Wizard. Montreal might be the best expansion team. There's the wild pitch on the way. >> Clubs can work as a group to take children to places they have never been. Heat. Heat. A lot of work. A woman alone may not be able to make even the simplest repairs to the house or car. When the situation seems without hope, a man of the community, another volunteer, knows how to draw upon community resources. >> Well, these two little gems right here would do just the trick. >> Listen, if you if you put those new tires on your car, I'll send all my friends to you for business and make it up to you that way. >> Well, that sounds like a good deal. And for that, I'll throw in a tank full of gas. Oh, Alex, that's swell. Gee, that's swell. I'm going to go tell her. Fine. >> What if you don't feel like you can work with a family? >> Are there other kinds of volunteers? >> Not all volunteers work directly with families and children. Many provide indirect services such as recruiting foster homes for homeless children. Now, you take for instance this poster. This poster will be used to recruit foster families. Even making a simple poster requires the combined efforts of a number of volunteers. Someone must take the picture. [Music] Someone selects the shot. Someone designs the layout. Someone does the lettering and lays in the background. Someone obtains the printing. This is a foster family picnic. It takes many volunteers to organize such events. Large numbers of foster parents are needed to care for homeless children. Volunteers carry out many promotional activities to recruit new foster parents. >> Telephone inquiries from prospective foster parents are screened by volunteers. In programs such as these, volunteers can take the calls in their own homes. Therefore, some of these telephone screeners may be confined to wheelchairs. >> Hello. >> Or in this case, blind. >> I'd be very glad to. Just a minute. I'll put the tape recorder on and we'll uh go from there. There is such a variety of people and such a multitude of tasks that no volunteer ever has to worry about not finding that assignment that is exactly right for him. Volunteers are needed to help children who are and those who are blind. [Music] Many older people feel isolated and lost. Volunteers are needed to visit them on a weekly basis and sometimes to chat with them daily by phone. Someone to come in the times of need and also to share the times of success. Susan's doctor says she may be able to walk without crutches. Hopefully in time to see her sister's graduation. [Music] These programs are all we have now. Hopefully, your awareness of poverty and your growing knowledge of poverty will bring about the needed changes. Volunteers have proven that hopelessness is not always inevitable. People can achieve independence and freedom from poverty and despair. They need the help of someone who cares. They need you. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Wow. So that had a local phone number. That's how regional like how specific that film was. It was made for a specific area. Um, and it might have been before area codes, but I I don't know. I think it was made for very specific county or uh part of whatever. Um, and so, uh, yeah, it was a little bleak. I I did peek ahead to see if the mom had died or not. I was like, "Holy cow, the first I mean, you went through what I went through." Um, and it was like, "Oh, no. She's just sick and her husband was raptured away. So, uh yeah, but this so bleak, but this was my childhood in that not that I experienced this directly, but my parents were social workers. So, I would hear or I would glean stories of of this where people's families were in crisis. Um and um so social workers helped or tried to help and were constantly being hamstringked um by government and uh lack of funding. And um so my my philosophy this this is what makes me basically a socialist maybe maybe even worse is you know lift up the people that are disadvantaged. Help them give them food. give them uh shelter until they get back up on their feet because uh most of them will. And so there there's my soap box. Um I had a great time at FantasticFest in Austin. Uh and I appreciate you guys uh being patient with all the uh pre-recorded stuff and the weird um themes that I I kind of cobbled together based on my experience there. Um, I'll probably go go back again next year and uh maybe I will do some shows again. Uh, that's something I didn't do this year. I just ran out of bandwidth to do it, but um I definitely will.
