hi everybody this is Skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where I'm at the archive but I'm not really at the archive I'm actually traveling but we pre-recorded a show and this one is a little zany um I basically was looking at some of the work that I had done for Duke University's avus project and I found a bunch of puffed Corn Flakes commercials that uh from the late 50s early 60s that I was like yeah yeah these are great so then I was like what am I going to show with it I was like oh yeah I just digitized and uploaded some stuff for prelinger archives it's called Miracle of corn so we're going to watch that then we're going to watch a bunch of these glorious uh puffed cornflakes commercials and then I was like puffed what what can I do puffed I was like oh yeah Miss puff so then at the end of this uh is a promotional film for a company that made uh toner for Xerox copy machines uh and this was a big deal because Xerox had made uh basically they had these service contracts to sell toner and that's how they were making a bunch of their money is you know you sell the machine relatively inexpensively you know maybe even at a little bit of a loss but then you you have this service contract where you're selling toner and it was very expensive not unlike nowadays and uh so this other company figured out like we can make toner and so they were trying to compete with that market uh and so they came up with this amazingly uh detailed uh explanation of Z xerography which they understand and this is you know they're like look we get we understand this and then I'm sure when they finished it they were like this is incredibly boring so let's put some something funny and interesting for uh our customers and so that's where Miss puff comes in and this is a very dated very sexist and just absurd it's just an absurd film and so um I don't know I I've never heard of the company before and I'm sure that they maybe they got sued or who knows what scene could be taking place anywhere across the Corn Belt at Harvest Time the father and son are busy bringing in their crop of corn look at that big ear the wagon is full of them there's proof that this Father and Son team have been repaid for their sweat and toil through the year it took a lot of careful planning and hard work on their part there are however many factors that contribute to a fine harvest the first thing to consider is the soil you have to know the needs of the soil in order to keep a proper balance of plant Foods available soil testing is the best way to determine these needs time and effort on the part of Agriculture Specialists have perfected soil testing methods to decide soil requirements samples are taken from representative areas in a field the tests are simple and may be performed by the farmer with the aid of a local County agent or the farmer may take his own samples and send them to a nearby agricultural laboratory for analysis and interpretation the varying shades of liquid show degrees of deficiency after soil testing if a farmer neglects to give his land the plant food it needs needs the results may be disastrous corn speaks plainly when it's hungry its hunger signs show up in the plant appearance and leaf discolorations yellowish green to yellow leaves almost invariably indicate nitrogen hunger these discolorations follow the mid rib if a plant is nitrogen hungry later on the whole leaf and bottom part may show an effect frequently referred to as firing here is another hunger side a phosphorus deficiency which shows up as a purple discoloration of the leaves in the early stages of plant growth progress or slow maturity may occur this corn is hungry for plates the yellowish green leaves with dry scorched edges tell us the plant is in need of this vital element either light or dark colored soil can have potach deficiency if potach hungry plants produce ears the tips are usually unfilled and the corn is low in feed value a farmer can help bring back a better balance of plant Foods in his soil and prevent deficiencies in his corn crop he can do this with the use of farmyard manure and Commercial fertilizers as indicated by a soil test this practice together with a well planned program of crop rotation is essential to in increased Farm efficiency the value of crop rotation has been proved in thousands of tests made on farms across the country crop rotation usually ensures higher crop production and better crop quality soil is like a person it needs food and rest to do its job properly some crops for example corn and wheat take valuable plant food from the soil other crops such as Clover and Alfalfa help replenish this plant food provided these legumes are plowed under a deepr rooted legume like Alfalfa not only adds nitrogen but it also loosens the soil to provide the better drainage and aration Alfalfa is an excellent tilt improving crop its long roots penetrate deep into the soil in their search for food and water The Roots help improve the structure of the soil and build up the fertility if soil loses its granular structure it becomes as unproductive as cement Contour farming and grass waterways should be utilized even on gently sloping land to prevent washing of valuable top soil corn cannot maintain our high standard of living now let's take a journey through the year and follow the progress of the corn crop from from planting to picking the first step is preparation of the soil for this purpose manufacturers of farm equipment have devoted years to the development and Improvement of the plow today the plow is a mechanical Marvel that saves the farmers hours of time and labor there are many differences of opinion concerning the proper methods and times for various steps in soil preparation but the three fundamental purposes of tillage remain the same they are preparation of a suit seed bed elimination of competing weed growth and Improvement of the physical condition of the soil the next step is planting of the seed during planting time the farmer Works quickly to get the seed into the ground while the moisture and other elements are just right a good seed bed is fine Compact and free from trash and growing vegetation in planting the seed proper depth is very important the rate of planting should be adjusted to the level of soil fertility and productivity a farmer must plant good seed otherwise all his careful planting and hard work are wasted here again the farmer benefits from the years of research and testing conducted by the leading hybrid seed companies and experiment stations this farmer has been using genuine feaster hybrids for a good many years he has learned that quality seed backed by careful research and a good company pays off at Harvest Time this seed has been specially treated with a liquid coating notice how this coating dulls the color of the kernels seed treatment is very important because it protects the corn when planted in cold damp soil a good crop depends largely on the farmer's selection of the right hybrid to fill his planter box he must be certain the hybrid is a good one this farmer has chosen to plant the hybrids best suited to his particular area and farm practices now the farmer looks for help from Mother Nature she must provide suitable weather to germinate the seed and carry it through the months of growth at Harvest Time the farmer will know how well he is to be repaid for his is sweat and toil during the season but now let's go below the ground and actually see the miracle of corn growth through time-lapse photography let us watch a seed grow the feaser associated grower research staff constantly working to develop new and improved hybrids uses timelapse photography to study germination and growth special photographic equipment operating day and night produced these timelapse pictures in a minute's time on the screen you see the equivalent of 5 days actual growth in this cross-section of the ground the kernel of corn germinates and sends out its root system for the support of the growing plant the primary roots are temporary and maintain the plant for only a short time the secondary or main root structure develops soon and takes over the job of supplying water and plant nutrients the root system begins to develop first and then the shot breaks through the seed coat and starts its upward growth the suot breaks through the soil and the corn plant for the first time in its growth cycle uses sunlight directly the swaying motion you see is not caused by wind or camera movement but by the plant's actual growth note the excess moisture dropping off the plant as the Shute grows the leaves which were unfolded inside are gradually exposed a good root system holds the plant erect and supplies the necessary food and water these roots develop in response to the needs of the plant the depth to which Roots penetrate is dependent upon the character of the soil and quantity of moisture now watch what happens to a kernel of uncoated seed as it germinates in cold damp soil it is subject to attack by destructive fungi and diseases and may never Sprout sometimes however it may Sprout as in this case see how the fungi attacked the bottom tip and work up the right side of the kernel stopping the growth see treatment helps resist these destructive diseases different types of seeds and variations in temperature and moisture of the soil affect rapidity of germination under normal conditions corn is up within 5 days and here timelapse photography shows its growth good strong seeds of high germination are necessary to obtain good stands the leaf has many functions it provides a circulation system for the plant it gives off excess water taken up by the roots it manufactures plant food and lastly it absorbs energy from the Sun to carry on these activities minute green bodies called chloroplasts take energy from the sun's rays and utilize it in performing the various activities of the plant as the corn continues to grow it requires further attention cultivation is an important step in the growing of corn the primary reasons for cultivation are weed control and loosening of the soil the weed should be eliminated so they will not compete with the corn for moisture and plant food the soil should be properly loosened to receive and hold normal rainfall nitrogen fertilizer is often applied to the growing corn plant this enables the plant to get an added amount of food at a later stage in growth one method of application is the use of a deep set implement this machine covers several rows at a time a side dressing attachment on the tractor is another way to apply fertilizer the fertilizer is stored in the tank and is applied in ribbons along the corn r this method of application allows the farmer to put on additional nitrogen at the same time he cultivates this is usually done at second cultivation cultivating too deep or too close to the plant is harmful particularly after the plants have considerable root spread the farmer who cultivates this way cuts off vital roots that are necessary for full growth plants cannot receive enough enough food and moisture and will not grow properly lack of nourishment will cause the ears to be smaller and immature The Roots grow several feet in their search for ample food and water by cultivating to deep and cutting these roots a farmer reduces his yield insects play an important part in the success or failure of a crop for the insect World contains friends as well as enemies of the farmer one friend is the spider which AIDS him in building webs to catch destructive insects among these destructive insects is the grasshopper cause of millions of dollars in Damages each year the farmer must wage a continual war against the grasshopper and other pests here we see several unusual shots showing the capture of a grasshopper in a spider web close observation of a spider's web shows how marvelous it really is the silken strands can support a tremendous amount of weight they stretch and contract as the needer arises when an insect becomes entangled many of the strands of the web are broken the spider must then rebuild and strengthen the web to hold the catch score one for our friend spider and for the farmer who has one less graphhopper to damage his crops yes we are so completely absorbed in the wonders of man's accomplishments we are apt to overlook the wonders of nature taking place place around us there are many insects which help the farmer another example is the bee while the be is at work Gathering honey and the flowers and clover it is also aiding in the pollination of these plants as the growing season rolls along the tassels develop the tassel is the male part of the Corn plant it produces the pollen which which usually begins falling one or two days prior to silking the pollination of corn so vital in the production of hybrid seed has been studied very carefully through the use of timelapse photography here we actually see the blossoming of the tassel notice how the anthers pop out and pollen comes out the ends here again the camera is stationary the tassel movement is caused by its growth the pollen is carried away to other plants by the wind this is another step in the miracle of corn growth here is a microscopic view of the pollen grains each magnified thousands of times each tassel produces millions of these tiny grains which contain the male sex cells the ear Bears the female cells of the Corn plant emerging from the end of the ear are the silks which are sticky and receptive to pollen at least one pollen grain Must Fall on every silk to affect fertilization shortly after the pollen grain falls on the silk a tube is sent out this tube penetrates to the base of the silk where fertilization takes place there are 800 to 1,000 silks on each ear with the husks pulled back it's easy to see them extending from a different spot on the cob where a kernel is produced if properly fertilized as the growing season progresses the tassels dry up the silks turn brown and the corn is well on its way to maturity Mother Nature continues to enter into into the life of the farmer the trees join in the Autumn drama as their leaves begin to turn from green to Brown the sky is blue and the air is cool the changing leaves announce to the world that the growing season is nearing its close it is Harvest Time and mother nature celebrates with a colorful display the cord and the field has turned from green to gold and now the farmer and his neighbors can compare the results of their different seeds and farming practices now the farmer wants to know if his methods will pay off a yield check accurately Compares for him various soil Improvement plans and types of hybrid seeds here on the test field the farmer locates the line dividing the two adjoining rows of corn which were planted with different types of seeds from the two test rows ears are picked and then weigh to give ear corn yield 20 lbs of ear corn from each sample are shelled and weighed to get shelling percentage a moisture test is taken and these figures are computed to number two shelled corn then the farmer knows exactly which seed is best adapted to his soil climatic conditions and methods of farming today farmers do not guess at results they make tests in in fact they conduct their own research plans looking over the fertile land the farmer knows his hard work and careful planning combined with the work research and production of many people has paid off on these Bountiful Acres the whole existence of the human race is dependent upon the productivity of the soil upon the farmer and related Industries lies the tremendous responsibility of caring for the heritage of this gours it was Sunday at the Barb Ranch and it was so peaceful the breakfast gong was just a tinkle then I got a big surprise for you cow hands new post puffed Corn Flakes puffed Corn Flakes that's right puffed cornflakes new from post we like them plain yeah well from now on you like them puffed once you've had them puffed plain Corn Flakes Aren't Enough remember that Maggie I sort of had my jaw set for plane you keep your jaw shut and eat them puffed hey the crisper the crispiest cornflake ever made hey they're tastier taste crisper cuz they're puffed up crisp now what do you say about new puff corn flakes from post corn flakes are enough okay if your good boys today you get more tomorrow you try them too new puff corn flakes from post thank corn flakes they asked me to come over and uh tell them how I like the cereal these are very Husky and puffed in there and they have a nice Christmas to it not Christmas Christmas I have trouble with that white crispness but it's a good word to describe them it describes these very well I haven't hit a soggy one yet and the flat ones they usually flat cornflakes seem to get saggy sometime but these puffed ones are pretty nice uh are they the kind of thing you'd recommend I'd recommend these puffed cornflakes uh over their flat ones anytime because they seem to be much more crisper and it and it gives you nice taste in your mouth if you have nothing to say I'll just keep eating all right you keep eating all new post puffed cornflakes puffed to be crisper than plain cornflakes another anything else quite like it it's a lively kind of a thing you know it's an awake sort of that's good taste would you buy a box oh definitely definitely what would you do with them feed them to my disappear down under these are puffed and crunchy and they stay on top they look more as though you want to eat them what do you think the secret is of the makes them stay crisp GE I I don't know but I don't know why they didn't think of it before I mean because they really taste good puff corn flakes they taste like corn flakes should taste but never do after a while well just like everything else I guess you know you get better Automobiles and better washing machines and now they have better cornflakes new post puffed Corn Flakes puff to be crisper than plain cornflakes post cereals make Machinery involved in producing a xerographic copy are both quite complex but let's look inside this Xerox 720 copier for a brief and simplified explanation of how a copy is made the heart of the machine is an an aluminum drum coated with selenium selenium is a highly sensitive material which in the dark is a nonconductor of electricity and will hold a positive electrostatic charge when any portion of the selenium is exposed to light it becomes a conductor and loses its electrostatic charge there are six basic steps in the production of a xerographic copy Step One is the charging of the selenium drum surface when the machine is turned on the selenium coated drum revolves constantly and an electrical element called a charging chatron imparts a positive electrostatic charge to the entire drum surface the selenium coating will retain this uniform positive charge as long as it remains in the dark next comes the scanning step when an original document is placed face down on the platin glass and the print button is pressed a set of traveling or scanning lamps throws a bright light onto the original a system of mirrors and lenses transmits this lighted image through an opening over the charged drum the exposure step begins as the scanned image strikes the Turning drum surface and the charged selenium coating reacts in its special way in areas where light is reflected from the unprinted background of the original the selenium releases its charge but in areas where the light is blocked by printing or other marking on the original such as the letter e shown here the selenium coating retains its charge in a matching pattern as a result of this exposure the drum now carries an invisible reproduction of the original document the next step is the developing of this into a visible image this housing holds developer beads which look like grains of sand and have a positive electrical charge xerographic toner which might be termed a special kind of powdered ink is slowly dispensed from the toner well and is picked up and held fast by the charge developer beads the toner is destined to become the visible image on the copy and the developer beads simply serve as Transporters or carriers of the toner an endless bucket conveyor lifts these toner covered beads letting them Cascade over the advancing selenium drum and its charged image since the charge of the image areas on the drum is stronger than that of the developer beads some of the toner is pulled from the beads and is held to the drum in what is now a visible image the developer beads fall back in the developer housing let's go over this developing step in a little more detail the toner particles have no electrical charge at all as they drop from the dispenser into the developer housing the developer carrier beads on the other hand have a built-in positive charge the action of the conveyor system causes friction between toner and carrier beads a few years ago Mother Nature passed a physical law known as the tribo electric phenomen which states that friction between any two different substances will cause them to assume opposite electrical charges from this friction the toner receives a negative charge and the existing positive charge of the carrier beads is reinforced electrically speaking Opposites Attract and the toner now sticks tightly to the carrier bead only the stronger positive charge of the drum image areas will pull toner away from the Carri beads creating a visible black image on the drum surface our letter e image for example will now be covered with a coating of toner while the background area Remains uncoated the transfer step begins as a single sheet of blank paper is fed from the paper tray and passes in contact with the image area on the drum another electrical element the transfer chatron applies a strong positive charge to the paper this charge stronger even than the drum's remaining charge pulls the toner off the drum and deposits it on the paper matching exactly the image on the original document our letter e is now in the form of a black toner image on the copy paper the drum has now completed its job and after being cleared of all toner residue and electrical charges by special devices it is ready for the the next copy cycle in the final step called fusing and delivery the copy is passed under a heating unit the heater elements melt the toner and fuse it to the paper creating a permanently bonded image the finished copy is transported by rollers to the receiving tray to complete the xerographic cycle these six key steps are repeated every time a zerog graphic copy is produced whether one copy or a thousand are required with each cycle the machine must charge scan expose develop transfer fuse and deliver the finished copy
