thank you oh crap what happened what happened sorry everybody I hope I it wasn't uh in the dark too long um I was dealing with some hard drive stuff anyhow um somebody noted in the comments yeah we're watching a lot of religious stuff um yes so that film was actually from the Oregon archive part of the Mogul Brothers collection and uh yeah we have been watching a lot of um religious stuff and I have another film set up on the scanner scanner scanner uh that is essentially another religious film The reason why is because we got a bunch of films from basement films in Albuquerque who was for they were forced out of their current space with the university and they're moving migrating to a community college there's welcoming their collection and they were scrambling to try to find places to take on some of the collections they're not interested in including 500 Christian films and so that's what we've been getting we've got 92 boxes of films that have been showing up so um that's why we're watching these kind of weird sitcom uh dramedies about religious stuff um so before we get started with that let's uh watch a story about the English language enjoy amiki lingua latinum low core May into legitus Hello friends of course we understand our own language but what of its relation to the other languages we have what of its relation to England and English History where did our language come from what is the story of the English language the introduction to our Story begins before there was an English language during the First Century A.D Roman troops invaded England and began their conquest of the island they found primitive Stone monuments which had been built by a very early people for use in religious rights they found a land of Rich farming country and Forest on which were then living tribes called the Celts the Romans dominated England and ruled the Celts for roughly 400 years and their remain today many traces of their power such as a wall built on Roman foundations and the ruins of a public bath the land was left to the Celts in the year 411 A.D when the last Roman armies were withdrawn from England but new invasions were already Brewing along the northern coasts of Europe lived various Nordic tribes the angles the Saxons the jutes the phrygians these tribes began to migrate to England thousands came landing on the beaches settling on the rich farmland pressing into the forests to hunt over a period of many years they came and pushed the Celts back into the forests and Hills these tribes intermingled and spread throughout England except for parts of Wales and Scotland the stage had been set for chapter one of our story The Anglo-Saxon or Old English pit the languages of the Nordic tribes were much alike and as traveling storytellers moved about among the tribes the various languages began to be intermixed here were the real beginnings of the English language the storytellers or epic singers kept a live myths of the past peoples of Valor and bravery of battles and Wars stories common to all the tribes through the years the various tongues became almost as one at last some of the epics were written down in a single language the Epic of Beowulf begins Allen primadon yes that is Anglo-Saxon or Old English in modern print the words look like this now we can make out a few familiar words we in King and here is a word for word translation into Modern English Lo we spear Danes in your days of the people King's Glory heard how the heroes Valor performed besides the great ethics we have an important historical document the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles this work was begun at the command of King Alfred the Great about 900 A.D by this time the various Nordic tribes were intermixed and angoland or England was becoming united into a single nation and then an important historical date ushered in Chapter 2 of our story Middle English 1066. an 11th century tapestry shows how William the Conqueror led the Norman French in a conquest of England these Normans were a civilized skilled people believed to have come from the north and settled in Normandy in France in coming to England they brought with them the French language of their day the Anglo-Saxon farmer lived in a house raised a pig and wore a hat or Hood all Anglo-Saxon words the Norman conqueror lived in a castle a pork and wore a helmet these French words and many others were added to the growing English language readers and singers were spreading the language for hundreds of years when few people could read and write around 1400 A.D Jeffrey Chaucer author of The Great Canterbury Tales set down old folk fables and tales in the new language the prologue to the Canterbury Tales begins and that April with issue is sorta the droops of March have passed to the Rota yes this is Middle English set in modern type you can recognize many of the words and here is a translation into Modern English when sparkling April with his gentle Reigns here we can find Anglo-Saxon words when with his and French words April pierced flower and there are words from another language too remember the 11th century tapestry in what language is the text written not Anglo-Saxon not French but Latin let's pause for a footnote on the influence of Latin stemming from the Roman Conquest the medieval Church and the Norman invasion from the Roman conquest of England few Latin words remained except for the names of locations the medieval Church sent Christian missionaries who traveled through England using Latin for worship and leaving a Heritage of Latin words and learning the Norman conquerors brought with them Latin law and a language that was only a short step removed from Latin thus far in our story the English language has changed rapidly and repeatedly under many influences chapter 3 Modern English is the story of relatively little change in the language between 1500 and today William Shakespeare in the 16th century wrote lines which need no translation although in his plays and poems he enriched the language with new words and ideas why is it that English has changed more slowly since then first because of the printing press when books and newspapers could be produced in quantity language became standardized second the growth of London as the cultural and literary Center for all England helped to set standards for the language third as the great English universities grew in importance the English language began to rank in stature with the classic languages of the world but as the world has changed the language has grown inquisitive men began to explore new lands were discovered the English language was planted in America and in America the English language grew in vocabulary from the Indians came such words as wigwam Papoose raccoon added to our language as words in the past had been added new conditions brought new ideas and new ideas brought new words new inventions have brought new words to describe them today in Prince and by the spoken word our American English language is spread throughout the world a language that has grown and changed faster at first more slowly yet steadily in modern times although we've come to the end for now we know that the story of the English language is to be continued foreign that uh it's fascinating it has been 40 years since I learned the um intro to uh Canterbury Tales and I still know it I didn't pronounce it the same way that they pronounced in the film but uh I still know it and I don't know my new drivers my license plate and my cars I don't know a lot of stuff but for some reason I remember that damn thing it got in there etched in the brain um that and five dollars I'll buy you a cup of coffee okay so what do we got um you're bicycling you or you and your bicycle this is uh Progressive pictures and um I was told that this this company was an independent small company based in the Bay area of uh San Francisco and that they were mildly socialist so uh Progressive pictures I get it uh enjoy like the sleepwriting and stick to them or you will find it can also be very dangerous the first step is to have your bike in good mechanical repair the brakes are most important when operating correctly they will lock the wheel and skid the tire here and safer riding tires should be inflated to the recommended pressure broken or missing spokes will cause your wheels to go out of alignment they should be replaced promptly a Broken Spoke can be dangerous too it may lock around a fork causing you to take a bad spill handlebars should be approximately as wide as your shoulders or the best control of your bike under all when they are too wide the bike is harder to manage and turning is awkward in an emergency a sharp turn with handlebars this wide would be impossible your handlebars and hand grips should occasionally be checked for tightness hold the front wheel between your knees then pull the handlebars from side to side and up and down to be sure it is firmly attached if it is loose tighten it by using a wrench on the adjustment lugs for easier riding adjust the seat high enough so that when your foot is on the pedal your knee will be slightly bent be sure that your foot pedals are in good condition and oil them occasionally never ride a bike with pedals in this condition your foot can very easily slip off causing a spill or you may gouge your leg on the bare metal lubrication on a bicycle is just as important as on an automobile but the only points on which you should put a few drops of oil are the pedals the break and the chain the axles and steering assembly are packed in grease they should be repacked at least once a year by a qualified person you should have a warning device on your bike either a bell or a horn it's a requirement in most cities now if your bike is properly licensed let's go out and have our first lesson in safe riding even a short trip to the store for Mom can be dangerous if you don't keep your mind on your riding always stop and look up and down before riding out onto the street approach intersections cautiously when slowing down or stopping hold your left arm outward and down signaling your intentions so the car behind you will have time to stop if the intersection is controlled by a stop sign always come to a complete stop and make sure the way is clear in both directions before Crossing Crossing intersections controlled by signals is very hazardous especially if you are making a left turn the safest procedure is to Dismount wait for the signal and walk your bike across in The Pedestrian Lane when you have reached the opposite side again wait for the signal before Crossing when turning in traffic give the correct arm signals for a right turn hold your left arm out with your forearm straight up a left turn signal is given by holding your left arm straight out always give your signals in plenty of time then anyone following will know what you mean to do when passing a slow-moving car first make sure the way is clear then give a left turn signal and pass to the left never pass to the right the car May suddenly turn into a parking space or around the corner many children are injured or even killed in this way always be on the alert for the unexpected ride on the right side of the street but allow enough clearance in case someone should open a car door remember an automobile is not as maneuverable as a bike don't swerve in and out of traffic follow a straight course and avoid doing the unexpected be extremely careful when passing parked cars it's difficult for the motorists to see you especially when he's parked diagonally Park your bike as near the curb as possible if you don't have a stand lean it up against a tree or a post where it will be out of the way never lay your bike down where it will block the way or where someone may fall over it it's thoughtless as well as dangerous don't carry bundles in your arms when riding provide yourself with a basket or a rack so your hands will be free to signal and to control your bike changing Road surfaces a newly graveled roadway can cause a skid riding over car tracks at too sharp an angle will throw you off balance cross street car tracks at a right angle some localities permit riding on the side if the person is on the sidewalk dismount walk your bicycle around them then go right ahead with your ride don't be a bicycle hitchhiker an unexpected turn or stop can mean sudden death writing two on a Bible spells you can't see or your passenger may stick his spokes wrecking the wheel and spilling or the pedal may catch in the cuff of his pants throwing you off balance don't ride your bike on the school grounds you may injure some of the other children at play and above all never be a show-off it just doesn't pay it's impossible for the most then drivers will have a much better chance to see you being caught and uh instead of spokes sprockets this film definitely got beat up um there I am yeah fascinating film um and the there's a cautionary tale about if your foot slips off the pedal uh that is what happened to me um was I 12 I think and I basically slid off and then landed on the bar and um I'm not going to go into details but I'm just going to say that my life has been affected by that um and we'll probably end up killing me at some point something's going to kill me but uh it is uh there's some surgery that I have to have done because of that that's all I'm going to say um so seriously don't let your foot slip off because what happens is it slipped off then my leg went under foot went under the pedal I was being drug it's just bad scene anyways uh that's how that affects me but let's find out how the Sun affects us enjoy the sun is our nearest star and the center of our solar system it is a medium-sized star about 93 million miles from Earth the sun directly and indirectly has been the major source of energy on Earth that small portion of its light and heat that is radiated to earth makes Life as we know it possible the sun's heat also helps evaporate the water that becomes clouds and eventually returns to earth as rain the sun's heat helps cause winds by heating the air The Sun Also indirectly provides us with nearly all our major fuels a tree like all green plants manufactures food by a process called photosynthesis which depends in part on the energy of sunlight the food is manufactured in the leaves of the tree and then used in its growth the sun's energy is stored in the wood of the tree as it grows and this energy is released when the wood is burned when coal burns the sun's energy is also being released it was stored in prehistoric growing plants that eventually were changed into coal petroleum is believed to have been formed deep underground from the bodies of tiny prehistoric plants and animals if that is true when petroleum or products of petroleum are burned energy from Sunshine is released that was stored in the plants and animals when they were alive most of our machines today depend on fuels containing the stored energy of the Sun it is easy to see how great an effect the sun has on our daily lives we think of our Earth as a big place the Earth is almost 8 000 miles in diameter but the Earth is Tiny compared to the Sun if the Earth could be seen against the full sun it would seem to be just a DOT or the sun is immensely bigger the sun is approximately 864 000 miles in diameter it is a great ball of glowing gases far hotter than anything on Earth with which we are familiar on a very hot day on Earth the temperature may be over 100 degrees Fahrenheit the Sun is far hotter hotter than the 2012 degrees at which glass melts hotter even than the nearly 3 000 degrees at which iron melts the temperature on the surface of the Sun is at least 10 000 degrees and deep inside perhaps 40 million degrees we know our solid earth has a surface and an atmosphere the part of the Sun that seems to be its surface is called the Photosphere which means ball of light but this is only the apparent surface of the Sun for the gaseous sun has no definite surface as the Earth does during a real or artificial eclipse of the sun its atmosphere can be seen the corona is the most outstanding part of the sun's atmosphere it appears as a great Halo of light extending at times nearly 10 million miles into space scientists believe that our earth and its atmosphere are composed of the same elements that make up the Sun and its atmosphere the sun's energy comes from nuclear reactions probably similar to those that occur in the release of energy in the hydrogen bomb in the process matter is converted into energy [Music] this process has been taking place in the Sun for billions of years a different kind of activity takes place on the surface of the Sun this is a photograph of immense clouds of luminous gas that are shooting up from the surface of the Sun to a height of 80 000 miles such clouds are called prominences compare the prominences with the size of the Earth these Motion Pictures of solar prominences have been speeded up several hundred times to make the action clear most prominences are not as spectacular as these which are rising nearly one hundred thousand miles above the surface of the Sun another kind of solar activity is called a solar flare bright flashing solar flares sometimes throw out great amounts of gaseous particles from the Sun some of which enter the Earth's atmosphere the spots on the sun in this Photograph are called sunspots the larger of these sunspots are big enough to enclose the Earth scientists are not really sure of their nature even these telescopic Motion Pictures of sunspots don't clearly show what sunspots are It is believed that sunspots may be Magnetic storms on the Sun but we are really looking down on great whirlwinds of matter sunspots only appear dark because they have a lower temperature than the brighter parts of the Sun spots May last from a few hours to many days the number of sunspots seems to increase and decrease in an 11-year cycle astronomers learn through the movement of sunspots that the sun rotates on its axis once in about 25 days explosive solar flares often accompany sunspots shortwave radio broadcasting is often affected on earth when there are large solar flares from overseas often Fade Out for many minutes foreign these flares on the sun disturb many forms of electrical communication by creating Magnetic storms on Earth matter ejected from the Sun is also believed to cause the brilliant Aurora the northern and southern lights no one is sure yet of the full effect of sunspots on our lives but there seems to be a relationship between sunspots and the growth of trees scientists have found that trees show greater growth about every 11 years which seems to correspond to the sunspot cycle of 11 years just how sun spots on the sun alter conditions on Earth that control the growth of trees is not definitely known it may be that our weather is affected in some way by sun spots scientists may be better able to predict weather on Earth as they gain a better understanding of activities on the Sun while much of what happens on the sun is not visible to our eyes one spectacular event can be seen a solar eclipse caused when the moon comes directly between the sun and a part of the Earth the action of this Eclipse seen through clouds has been considerably speeded up to make the motion clear here we see the total eclipse and the corona ancient people feared eclipses or they did not understand their nature today we understand many things about the Sun the sun is a star the center of our solar system and the major source of energy on the Earth it is a gigantic nuclear furnace that has been pouring matter and radiation into space for billions of years [Music] and will probably continue doing so for billions of years to come [Music] uh what is it the sun is the mass of incandescent gas um it's a great song but I cannot remember it but I can remember the intro to Canterbury Tales um all right so I have a film set up behind me we're gonna run long because this is a uh Concordia film that has the kind of scrolling like Star Wars thing to it so it's gonna be uh some sort of melodrama about God um I don't know what don't feel bad Freddie we should have told you Linda's mom and dad took the noon jet to New York just before the holidays and well didn't quite get there Linda's dad was going to New York on business her mom would long to see some of the shows sorry I didn't know [Music] [Applause] Linda I didn't know really I didn't know oh I guess I heard about the plane crash before we moved here but but none of the kids told me about you no it's not your fault Fred everybody's just been trying not to talk about it here I I brought your books thank you can I do anything no it's all right oh and don't feel bad please it was really my fault [Music] I've been saying too much of London [Music] well except when she eats lunch with the gang say she's a friend of Kathy's isn't she [Music] I haven't seen her at any of our Sunday evening sessions did she ever go to church Kathy used to bring her once in a while before her folks were killed where does she live now with an ant or something [Music] maybe she would come out Sunday Kathy asked her no dice well do you think I should try what do you want a vote of confidence I know you're gonna ask her anyway he don't sleep I hadn't noticed before but Lynn is a pretty good looking girl what a funny like if you want romance take her out on a date don't give me this Jazz about Sunday evenings for sure hi gang hello hey Kathy doll well what's new oh Fred the funny here was just about to ask you what Linda said last time you asked her to join our gang at church answer sleepy so he can tell me well I I was kind of surprised not at what Linda said but the way she said it first she thanked me and shook her head I could see she was starting to cry so I I tried to change the subject then she she said she respected the way I felt about God but she wasn't going to kid herself anymore well did you say anything else no she she didn't want to talk about it sounds like Linda's been picking up some of Jerry Hooper's ideas what kind of ideas I'm in Jerry's physics class and well I don't get much of a chance to talk to him Jerry's a nice guy and he's probably the smartest kid in school a real brain but don't get in any arguments with him on religion or politics he'll tear you to pieces like how well Jerry believes in a god at least I think he calls him a god but it's not the same God we believe in at least I don't think so I'm gonna have to have a bowl session with that boy someday well not me when he gets way out there I can't dig him I don't think our history teacher can either say uh Linda and Jerry are are they going together steady steady just just dating steady in other words Freddie my boy you've got your work cut out for you [Applause] [Music] oh hi Linda hi Fred how's it going oh I'm all right thank you listen I am sorry oh that goes double for me so yeah I've got my car at school today how would you like a lift home I'm going your way anyhow track stars tomorrow and the coach wants me to pick up a fiberglass pole at JC all right thank you [Music] hey what a great place for a party well I haven't had any yet oh I didn't mean it well it is a swell room I know I like it much better than the living room or my own room [Music] just to sit around or study we had a room like this back in Dayton well that was where we lived before we moved here wasn't it hard I mean switching a semester from one school to another but just at first though I've been leaving your friends [Music] but I met a small bunch of kids the ball helped and I think mostly it was the group at church uh say Linda I wondered well uh why don't you come out with Kathy and the rest of the gang this Sunday evening we're planning a swell programming I could pick you up no thank you Fred I'd rather not Linda I haven't been very honest with myself or or you I've been mixing up two different things I really do want to get to know you but but I wasn't thinking about that right now I asked you to come out this Sunday because well I think it will help you thanks Fred I I don't think so I was just leaving for choir practice when when I heard about Mom and Dad I was home alone practicing a song save your pilot me [Music] I wasn't a regular member of the choir but they knew I sang so they asked me to sing this song the police came and they told me I'm sorry Linda I wish well never sing that song again I'll Never sing any song or say any prayer to it a God who would kill my mom and dad maybe there just isn't even a god just just know God at all Linda there is a God not just a God but but God himself the one the Bible tells us about I know it I just know it that's all I wish you could know it too [Music] next time you should wear a parachute hi Jerry hi are you going home or something how come you're out here all alone jumping without a crossbar oh I just picked up a new fiberglass Pole I thought I'd try it out wow now I know what a blast off is like uh would you like to try it oh you gotta be kidding I'm starting a local chapter of the lettermen's club for non-athletes well we're an emblem and date all the girls while you poor slobs or knocking yourselves out of course you know some of you athletic bums aren't so bad for yourselves when it comes to moving in on another guy's girl you know Jerry I looked around real careful and and I didn't see one private property signed just anywhere before any girl becomes my private property I'm gonna be an old man like 30 or so and I can't jump very high but I sure can run fast meanwhile Linda's a cute kid and you're gonna have to jump a lot higher than you did just now to beat my time Jerry I can jump a lot higher than that kidding aside Fred you know Linda was pretty upset when you left yeah I know I I didn't know what to do or didn't know what to say I went through the ringer when her folks were killed and I couldn't think of anything to do or say either I tried to get her to start meeting with our gang on Sunday evenings you're welcome to come too Jerry thanks Fred don't get me wrong I respect you guys a lot but I just don't buy that kind of jazz Linda doesn't either anymore it isn't Jazz to me I'm sorry Fred I didn't mean it that way really I know that you and sleepy and Joan the rest of the bunch got a hold of something that means a lot to you well that's great but it just isn't my slice of grapefruit so go ahead Fred and try to beat out my time with Linda if you can each time with me that comes Under The Heading of competitive Sports but don't forget that she's just starting to get her feet back on the ground again don't get her all confused with this church God Jesus knows best routine that's kind of hard to buy when your mom and dad tell you goodbye and never come back maybe God does no best huh maybe but would you buy it if it was your folks I don't know Jerry I I can't imagine that even happening to me but I hope I would buy it just like you said I hope I would buy it even if it didn't make any sense [Music] [Applause] come on sleepy let's shoot some baskets see who gets the cokes go away I'm joining Jerry's club for nine athletes you guys just aren't intellectual enough okay I'll get them this time [Music] how you doing lover boy oh I almost cleared 13 feet yesterday by eight inches you almost cleared 13 feet I'm talking about Linda give me the odds well I read them about 60 40. 60 who who else I told you I almost cleared 13 feet uh who are you taking to the prom Genie Jerry had already asked Linda I got her for the varsity hop though I'd love to see Jerry's face when she tells him you uh just playing games or you really want to help Linda I want to help her but I want to play games too I just don't know how to help her sleepy I'm dead if I bring that subject up again maybe it just does take a long time for anybody to get over get over something like she went through it takes more than time I think okay then what's the answer I've been thinking so far no luck but I'll bet that boy Jerry finds a way of telling her what he thinks yeah it's easier when you're knocking something yeah I guess so here you go guys thank you hope you at least get up for lunch hey uh has Kathy said anything about Linda yet well she said that well she just wants to be a good friend you guys coming out this Sunday night sure I'll be back on time back from where oh I'm picking up Jerry after church we're gonna go hiking up to rib Hill you and Jerry yeah we've been having some great bull sessions well now if that just don't Frost the banana ah we must have been hiking for nine hours only two I'm not out there leaping over a bamboo Pole every afternoon maybe you ought to try it I lose my app emblem maybe I'll get kicked out of the non-athletes of America just for walking this far you know it's the same distance back hmm I think I'll walk backwards and when I talk it'll be kind of like a jack what well sure a beam of light couldn't move an object in space why not words then two guys could orbit around Mars just by talking through the exhaust of their jet brother they better bottle you after all words are spoken ideas they've got more power to propel than a reactor everything depends on words even your religion or science too okay Fred I'm not knocking religion maybe I'm just as religious As You Are maybe I'm just looking for a modern religion that makes sense today religion makes sense to me I think it's pretty modern it seems awfully old to me the idea of God is the person up there doesn't make sense anymore up where in the Andromeda galaxy or 50 billion light years Beyond or of time and Light and space curve or is he inside of us or in the middle of a nucleus of every atom and when we explode in Adam do we explode God too you know with a blast off like that we both should be in orbit if you ever do get into space they're gonna have to Muzzle you let's have 10 seconds of Silence while I catch up hmm I don't know where God is but I do know that he is you know the other day one of our bull sessions at church one of the fellows brought up an interesting point to I thought it made pretty good sense he said if someone could explain God then well then God wouldn't be God anymore that we're just not geared to understand or or know just what he is like well it's like expecting this watch to explain the guy who made it tick the watchmaker who made the watchful he knows what's inside but the watch it doesn't know what's inside the man who made it sounds like a bunch of cornball philosophy to me besides I'm not a watch I've got a brain and if God's ever going to get through to me this is where he's going to have to get through if you mean that in the right way Jerry well then I'll agree with you God has given us his word to hear and to believe what word well the Bible mostly the New Testament the religion of Jesus come on Fred everything we know about Jesus depends on eyewitnesses most of them guys who couldn't even write their own names besides Clarence Daryl said show me an eyewitness and I'll show you a liar if you consider Matthew's account of The Sermon on the Mount a lie well then I think it's the best lie we've ever been told okay I can buy this Sermon on the Mount no matter who wrote it or when well that's the whole point no matter who wrote it or when it's the meaning of the words that counts I said I bought The Sermon on the Mount well then you'll have to buy Jesus I can buy Jesus but not that jazz about the only begotten son or an all-powerful God who somehow could only get himself one son what about the other possible 100 million Earths just in our galaxy what's God gonna do about Sons to save all those people I guess no one can answer that it's enough for me to know that he that he did send his son to save this world it just doesn't add up Fred we don't believe anymore that our little Earth is the center of the universe or that stars hang from strings in the sky for little angels to swing on isn't it about time we did some face lifting on the image of God don't get me wrong Jerry but but nothing you have said is well can change the fact that somewhere there's a God who created this wonderful universe that he loves his creatures that he's shown his love in many ways mostly by sending his son Jesus into the world to be our savior somehow somewhere he's going to make sense out of everything that's messed up today no matter how many universes there may be there's only one God and one savior and I know that savior okay let's Mosey along [Applause] yeah [Music] hey hey Jerry I've got it lay down maybe it'll go away no I'm serious I've got a terrific idea tell it don't sell it [Music] why do we waste these bull sessions on just the two of us how would you like to come to one of our group meetings on Sunday night are you no I'm not I just don't see the point of it well what's the point in talking the way we've done this afternoon there's a lot of point Jerry my dad says that people who talk things out they never get into trouble but what about people like Linda who keep things locked up inside can you talk to her the way we talk no no I really can't well wouldn't it be good for her to listen to one of date with just one boy at a time Linda this really isn't a gag Jerry and I haven't buried the hatchet either I'm still gonna beat his time no but we want to put you in the middle of a real fight I've mentioned that Fred and I like to kick around ideas together well we're planning to put on a big show for this whole group and we'd like you to pitch in with us you can say anything you want to say or say nothing at all you'll probably agree with some of the things that are said and disagree with the others Jerry and I are friends but but we're also friendly enemies you know it helps to get your ideas out in the open to stand up for what you believe in and fight for it no matter what it is we think it'd be good for you too don't say no not yet I don't agree with a lot of things that Fred says but I agree with them on this we both think a lot of you Lyndon and we do want to help I can't say I know how I'd feel in your place Linda but I don't think Jerry could either but I do know this that you can't keep a hurt locked up inside [Music] we'd both go to a meeting like we're planning even if to say a different thing [Music] you know I think Jerry's right the image of God could stand a little face lifting and you better could I can't buy that some of our churches maybe but not God no you're not reading me can I say something sure give Kathy a chance well I will but let me finish first now take math in the time of Christ then take Einstein now we've come a long way in math in 2000 years but but we still think about God in the same old-fashioned way oh I don't know Einstein didn't think God was old-fashioned maybe he meant something else when he said God maybe he agreed with Huxley that you don't have to believe in a personal God to be truly religious Jerry you're mixing the apples with the peas being truly religious isn't always being truly Christian I suppose it doesn't matter when the things in the New Testament were written down or who did the actual writing the important thing is we believe that God was talking through the men who wrote them but that's not the whole point no sir God may have been talking to a lot of other people but we don't put Halos on them I want to say something about face lifting God I think the face of God is just as new to each of us today as it was thousands of years ago he's still Our Father we don't have to change his image maybe we have to change ours to be more like him we don't know why some things happen to those we love but well maybe that's not God's fault maybe it's because we're not perfect enough not enough like him to be able to see yeah did you have anything else to say no I I think I've said enough for now well I've just been the moderator for tonight and for the most part I've tried not to say too much I don't know try not to say too much right now I think Kathy and the rest of you have already said it it's been good for all of us that Jerry and the others said what they said well the way I feel it it makes you stronger in your faith well whenever somebody challenges it it makes you dig your roots deeper and stronger I hope we can have more sessions like this one as for our topic tonight face lifting the image of God I believe we as Christians must agree that God's image needs no face lifting he's given us the best possible picture of himself through Jesus Christ Our Savior especially when Jesus died for us on the cross whenever we want to know what God looks like all we have to do is think of Jesus and what he really means to us I guess you could say that well Jesus is God's face to us as long as we hold on to that idea well I think we have something really solid to hold on to now I'd like to suggest that we close this evening by well by singing a song I hope that a certain person
