this is needlessly tight I know what's going on um try to fit this better that could be related a little bit better um hi I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show our Labor Day Edition uh nobody's working today except for me uh because this isn't really work for me I very much enjoy what I do so taking an opportunity in an empty archive to just do some work uh but also today is a day that we really honor and remember our workers uh the people who uh built this country the people who make things people who handle every aspect of your life um cashiers receptionists uh Factory workers police officers postal employees etc etc um those people they drive society and uh I appreciate them uh it's easy to to gripe and [ __ ] about them uh because they also hinder our lives in many many ways but we should honor them nonetheless because they are us they are our people um so anyways uh behind me well wait a minute well let's watch some uh short films about this is part of a management series that um Calvin films made for McGraw Hill which made for Alcoa and uh these are all films about how crappy uh managers are this is hidden grievance enjoy [Music] how's it going Jake well what's the matter something's eating on you oh I don't know it must be the lights or something my eyes never bothered me before Oh when this start oh about the time I started on this new part here must be close to work or something well tell you what we'll get you a new setup here a little more light right down on what you're doing how's that sound to you well I hope it helps this ain't no good oh we'll fix you [Music] up well that ought to fix you up huh D yeah that takes care of one of my problems but I got another one just as bad what is this other problem my legs boy they're killing me I didn't know you had any trouble like that well I haven't had up until lately this new setup here has me jumping up and down every 2 seconds like a monkey it gets me right here well is there anything we can do about it I don't know haven't thought much about that well Jake we've never tried it before but maybe a rubber mat something to stand on that might be the answer I don't know well we'll try it see if it doesn't help yeah [Applause] well how's it going Jake I see they got you fixed up with a rubber mat I'd like to sit down and talk to you sometime Larry got another problem yeah but this is a pretty serious one you know the kind you ought to sit down and talk over don't suppose now be a good time to do it well I am in a carpool uh let's take Time come on back to my office okay take chair right over there cat if you'd like all now then uh let's uh hear what's on your mind well I don't exactly how to put it oh Excuse me yes or five five or 10 minutes relax listen to the radio or something I'll be there in Jiffy uh Jake can I say something sure we've known each other a long time don't beat around the bush just tell me right out what's what's on your mind okay I want to be taken off the new job why you don't know no but it's too tough it's harder work it calls for more Precision why do you keep on giving the hard jobs to me Larry so that's it well Jake it's a relief to know what's been eaten on you I I wish you'd have told me sooner you know there's just one hitch a hitch you're wrong about the job it's not harder doesn't call for any more skill than the other one but I'm the guy that's working on the job every one of those New Dimensions is trickier to check it's just new to you that it's all the measurements are a little different but the tolerances are exactly the same believe me I know what I'm talking about I don't quite see it that way but well you're the boss you'll be all right once you get the hang of it well see you [Music] later how about that funny how it takes so long to get to the real gripe well I hope this clears it up well now what didn't get the first base with him I don't get it I never get the easy jobs it's not fair maybe the union could help me out on this yeah that's what I should have done in the first place but Larry this isn't something you can just brush off this is now a formal complaint breed of contract because of discrimination in assignment of work well I thought it was all taken care of I talked to him about it I guess I just didn't get my point across evidently he felt he didn't get his across either look Tom Jake has been given more special treatment than anybody else in the shop his eyes bother him so we put in more lights we gave him a rubber mat to ease his eights and pains but as for my loading all the tough jobs on him he's all wet what am I supposed to do consult with him before I hand out the easy jobs just to avoid a formal [Music] grievance I like all these they end with a question um and the question is generally related to uh poor management skills and so the idea is you would show the film at a management meeting a middle management meeting and then everybody would discuss uh what's what you know so what do you think he was doing wrong like what would you do in this situation blah blah blah you know so it's open-ended uh this next one is uh I think it's made by the sing folks um it's called missing interest and this guy this manager is [Music] [Applause] [Music] I hate to lose you Pam but if your mind's made up I hope you're happy wherever you go well thank you Mr Wy I'm looking forward to the new job it sounds real interesting say goodbye to Mrs Simmons for me will you when she comes back from her vacation oh sure Pam sure and uh good luck Goodbye Mr buard in Personnel please hello Ken this is Dave Wy in operations I was wondering if you had any leads on a replace B for Pamela Adams she just left oh that's too bad Dave good girls are hard to find what did she give us a reason for leaving well you know how it is Ken they never give you the real reason said it was to take a more interesting job but it was probably more money was there an objection to the pay scale oh no direct objection to the pay but you know what I've always said we should pay more well that way we we'd get plenty of help better help and if they don't work out fire them well that sounds pretty drastic actually the records show that there are other things besides salary which count maybe it's just as well she left she was never interested or very accurate in this job from the time that she arrived and we gave her every chance I went out of my way to be friendly and helpful [Music] hi there hello you're the new girl aren't you now let's see your name is Pamela Adams of course and I'm not exactly new anymore Mr Wy I've been here 5 weeks you have well time flies doesn't it how do you like the job Pam oh it's fine I guess it does seem rather routine at times well you just stick with it Pam I know filing is not much of a job but later on you'll get to do more important work I'd like to talk to you about my future here Mr Wy some of the other girls were saying that you well what I I mean is I I've learned this filing job very well now and I wondered if I couldn't begin to learn something that was hey watch that first name filing I saw one of them out of out of order yesterday we file by last name then by both initials on a common name like Smith or Jones that's duplicated that's very important it's one of the first things you should have learned I know how we file Mr Wy well I just threw these records down in rough name order it saves time in the actual filing well just be sure your rough sorting doesn't get you all mixed up and you file them wrong yes Mr Wy I'll be careful good girl now as to your future you just keep doing a good job filing you'll be ready for the next job when it comes along and as to what the other girls tell you the more you think for yourself around here the better off you'll be you'll get your promotion faster if you don't listen to other people I'll remember that Mr [Music] [Applause] Wy good morning Catherine good morning morning Nancy hi Catherine I'd like you to do do something for me yes you know that new girl Jan Adams Jan Adams Oh you mean Pam Adams out in filing yeah Pam Adams now what I want you to do is to keep an eye on her work you know accuracy make sure she's doing her job right now don't make it obvious that you're checking just ask her how she's doing and look at her files whenever you get a chance all right Mr Wy but I thought she was doing just fine I trained her myself oh why don't blame you training just goes so far but I'm not sure she's doing as well as she might nothing serious but I want to be sure okay Mr Wy oh that reminds me those special memos on materials you gave me this morning should I put them ahead of my regular assignment did I say to well no but they look important you're going to send them to Mr Mayor for study aren't you yes but look just get the data specified and get those memos back to me as soon as you can but do you want them today or tomorrow today of course well if I'd have wanted them tomorrow I'd give them to you tomorrow oh Mr Wy yes I know you're busy now but I just wanted to talk to you a few seconds about an idea I have that might save the company some paperwork good idea why don't you just drop it in the suggestion box well before I did I wanted to find out what you thought of it well I'm busy now but I've always got time for good suggestions well I had planned to make up a draft to the form before I talked to you but roughly it's an idea to combine the warehouse report and the production report on one form well it's mostly the same information Anyway by redesigning no we dropped that warehouse record form a couple of years ago it didn't work we had to start using it again but I didn't mean to drop the warehouse record just combine it with a production report how I'm so sure it would work I'd bet on it like you bet me on that other idea of yours numbering the memo forms wasn't it what a mess that was remember now don't get me wrong Catherine I do want to hear any ideas you might have the next one might be great and next time I better leave it to the experts I'm sorry I wasted your time Mr Wy I'll go see what I can do about Pam Adams well how's the new assignment Nancy oh just fine Mr Wy these reports are a lot more fun than filing good I'm awfully glad you gave them to me even if I'm not so good at typing them well do try to imp approve the typing those reports go to management yeah I know how's filing coming along pan if you have any questions about the system I'm available well I thought I was doing fine just as you suggested then this morning Mr Wy threw a fit when he saw I was rough sorting the cards well I guess he was scared I was going to file them that way oh for goodness sake just for get it after a couple more months maybe he'll stop checking up on your work well I'm not sure I can wait that long so will you see what you can do Ken uh get me a girl who will not be wanting to change the job she was hired to do who'll do what she's told to do and stay put okay yes I know about the high turnover rate in my division but that's not my fault I've always said we should pay more then we'd get girls who are willing to stay that would stop the turnover you don't agree all right what do you suggest a three-day [Music] [Applause] [Music] week yeah three-day week I'll take it um that gu daav so uh some of you in the in the credit uh in the uh comments basically uh thought that he was the organist from Carnival of Souls maybe um excuse me I I found that some of these actors float around now Calvin was not Centron and Centron was herk harvy's uh where he worked and made a bunch of films um but you know they're all kind of in that area so it's possible that they knew each other Calvin also did these workshops uh annual workshops where industrial filmmakers like Centron would attend so it's totally possible that herk met that guy and said hey I'm making a feature film you want to be in it or audition for this uh I would personally love and I don't have the time or the attention exp for but I would love someone to do a an expanded Carnival of Souls using Centron footage because a lot of those teens actors show up in other things and to kind of create this new narrative um although the narrative for the Carnival of Souls is really good but it would be great to kind of Flesh it and make it more of a miniseries I don't know um yeah that's your challenge somebody um and then you can uh we'll figure out a way to distribute it we'll call it um Carnival of Souls Redux or something I don't know but uh yeah pretty great pretty pretty great uh let's see this next one features a a character actor that you should also recognize I think his name is Alan Oppenheimer could be wrong anyways this is the case of the missing magnets enjoy [Music] my name is Grady this is the plant where I work no I'm no private eye I'm a supervisor but well all those who doneit on TV sometimes they get you you know what I mean just let something go wrong and who gets a signed to solve the mystery Grady that's who and on the morning I'm going to tell you about I had a real case to solve I know you've been in the same boat or one like it so maybe you'll get a charge out of seeing how fast you can spot the clues maybe you can solve it faster than I did try it anyway the case opened with a piece of paper the weekly production chart the trouble was there in cold hard figures man hours of Labor up production down and my job find out why it was the case of the missing magnets right away I started getting my arguments ready absenteeism inexperience against help supplies not delivered on schedule you know the aliis trouble was so did the boss hello talk louder something's wrong with the phone well why don't you have it fixed Mr G guy's supposed to come today um what's up Sally boss want to see me no I just thought you'd like to know Mr G he'll be out of town till tomorrow you've got a whole day to fix up your story what story you know Mr G [Music] bye-bye yes I knew and I had to find out why production was down not just because the boss would be on my neck but because it was my job the answer was out there somewhere but where then I saw he was still having trouble trying to make a new machine work like it [Music] should and right then and there I spotted the trouble here was the guilty party in the case that machine purely a technical problem like the crackling on the phone [Music] you're working kind of late aren't you a little so are you everybody out there is gone home yeah we got trouble with a new machine well this machine won't trouble you anymore oh thanks hey huh don't you use your right hand for phoning nope why don't you put the phone over here will be more convenient cord won't reach I can fix that oh don't trouble ah it's not much trouble really all I've got to do is move the block why you doing all that it's my job giving service oh I get it it'll look good when you turn in your report no nobody will know it but me but the way I figure it if I'm going to do a job I'm going to do it right hey you make it sound real important well just how important is the phone to you all right look I was only kidding I know you're just trying to be helpful and I appreciate it this phone's always been a nuisance well it won't trouble you anymore you know I could use a little of that attitude around here that's no big deal we all got a kick out of doing the best job we can so long as we know it's recognized well you get a big vote of thanks from this satisfied customer is that what you mean well that helps but lots of times we don't even see the cust customer it's just that we we want to know that our boss recognizes a good job when he sees it oh I see your your boss makes you feel important is that it yeah yeah something like that well how does he do it I mean how does he make you want to do your best gee don't ask me he just gets it out of us without always cracking the whip we respect him and he respects us he lets us know he expects us to do a good job and well somehow we can't let him down well so long [Music] thanks again good night it wasn't long before he was gone but what he had said started me thinking I began to remember I remembered the time when I was out there working on the line I was working right here I begun to to remember Ernie Scott and that other Foreman uh what was his name oh yeah now I remember it was Miles yeah mil listen you you know you're way off your production what have you been doing all day goofing off it's not my fault most of these parts don't fit why didn't you tell me we get new ones I only work here hey who's missing here Al Whitley you sick again he's been out four days this month talk to him we got to tighten up around here see tighten up tighten up that was his favorite expression but anybody could tell he ran the loosest shop in the planet the signs were all around absenteeism tardiness turnover sloppy housekeeping griping they never told us anything but we had the healthiest gra Vine in the place me I became an expert in spinning my wheels why not I didn't know what was expected of me it was just a job if we ever did good work we never heard about it and the only time we got reprimanded was when the heat was on now look fellas I I don't want to ride you but uh they just had me upstairs and chewed me out now we've got a quota to meet and we've got to tighten up up and meet it they want more magnets and we're going to turn them out I don't care how you do it but the next time I go upstairs I want to look good see good so tighten up tighten up tighten up that's all that guy knows why should we break our backs for him all he wants to do is impress his bosses well he's not going to get more work out of me no more work out of me that was the sum total of miles's scoldings and threats and his empty slogan he failed to impress his men he failed to impress the men upstairs and it wasn't long before we had a new Foreman the new Foreman was Ernie Scott and what a difference he brought a new outlook a new atmosphere here into the department and it wasn't long before well before the whole department had a different attitude I thought you'd like to know Hank you haven't had a single reject all week that's what I call good work yeah thanks don't thank me okay say Ernie this new stuff that's coming through it it doesn't seem to work quite the same what do you think no doubt about it Ernie was on top of his Department helping us when we needed help jacking us up when we needed jacking up Ernie arranged with a company to show us just what happened to the magnets we made and what they did then one of the company salesmen explained how what he sells is the quality of the work we do and how to get orders he has to promise delivery and how if we don't deliver both quality and quantity we'll all be out of work it was a kind of pep talk but on a solid practical basis and I know we all went back to work feeling our jobs were more important and we were more important then there was the time we had a new machine coming in I guess it's just natural for everybody to resist change but before that new machine arrived Ernie had talked it over with each one of us when you add it all up I think the big difference the reason we changed from a gang of gold bricks to a productive team was that we had respect for Ernie because he respected does I was getting pretty close to solving the case now and there was a question on my mind I didn't want to ask it but I had to looking out there in the shop I asked myself which kind of a worker would I be working under me that was the vital clue in the case I knew the answer and it told me who the guilty party [Music] was what did that Telephone Man say if I'm going to do a job I'm going to do it [Music] right so I typed out a little memo to myself things to remember about the connection between attitude and productivity and I boiled it down to three words enthusiasm it's contagious pride in themselves and their jobs standards known and enforced there's more to being a good supervisor and more to meeting production goals you know there is every day you're the detective in your department you won't solve every problem the way I solve Sol the case of the missing magnets but if you'll think about the clues we've developed well don't you think some of them might help you crack your next case I hope so anyway that's the end of my story pretty odd isn't it when the guilty party turns out to be the detective [Music] we call that genre management film Noir uh yeah so in the comments uh and also looking it up alen Oppenheimer was the voice of Skeletor uh Skeletor not Skeletor uh from U that wonderful filmation series He-Man and Masters of the Universe uh which was kind of after my childhood I think I was in high school or even in college when that came out and I had little to no patience for that show I did not like that show and the voices that the voices of filmation oh the worst absolutely the worst uh so anyways although skele Skeletor uh is probably the only character that I could stand what was the name of the flying guy is that Orco Oro uzo who is it anyways I'm not going to talk we're not talking about He-Man anymore this is about 16 mimer films this is films about working this next film is fascinating uh this film was made in the 70s and it is I think it was made by the AFL CIO and it is an attempt to dispel the myth that uh cars or uh products made by us workers are inferior to ones made by Foreign workers uh European uh autom makers and Asian uh electronics makers and so this is uh workmanship myth [Music] enjoy this is Mike shch Mike builds cars he will never drive this is John Morton John builds blood analyzers he will never use this is Teresa Carter Teresa constructs television sets whose pictures she will never see you are part of a system and because the system is highly competitive its strength is also its weakness you must rely on others for the products you use but if for instance you don't have confidence in the skill training and attitude of Teresa Carter a person you never met you could buy a television set with components built by by sangi hakaya who works in Tokyo whom you also never met that is your right in the system of course the reverse is also true if Teresa Carter loses confidence in your ability she doesn't need what you make how good are the things you make how good are Teresa Carter and Mike shch and why is it that a lot of Americans prefer some one else's work I'm Martin agronsky and I'm an American Workman so are my doctor my dentist the people who constructed this building and this street and the waitress who served me dinner last night they all have different skills and different capabilities but they have two things in common first they are Americans who work second it has been widely reported that we as a society seem to have begun to lose confidence in their work why for a viewpoint on that let's switch over to Japan like the legendary Prophet the American Workman is sometimes honored more in a country other than his own this is eatan Company Limited one of the oldest department stores in Japan every industrialized Society in the world makes products like toys and towels clothing jewelry cameras watches pens and tools the successful retailer does not have to import them over thousands of expensive miles eatan has found a reason to America when did you begin to sell American Products well that started about 1945 we began gradually and since then the volume we handle has been increasing steadily Mr kesum Masa kosiba manager of isatan Tokyo these American Products amount to what kind of dollar volume within our last year's sales record it's equivalent to $1.5 million why would the Japanese customer choose an American product instead of its local equivalent I believe that it's the quality of American product that has been appreciated by the Japanese customer exactly what do you mean by quality I believe that there are three points first is there is functionality they are useful second they are very durable good workmanship and third the prices are reasonable so for these reasons they are well reputed among Japanese customers one store in Tokyo does a million and a half dollars worth of business selling the same American Products we take for granted toys small appliances Sporting Goods towels but it's not just the product that people buy it's the quality the workmanship in Venezuela 44% of all imported manufactured products are supplied by us manufacturers in Singapore it's 22% in Spain it's 14 % in Australia 24% why for a viewpoint on that let's switch to Washington in the US Department of Commerce we asked Dr Charles W Hustler Deputy assistant secretary for international Commerce uh Dr hasser how well are American Consumer products selling abroad American Consumer products are doing very well Martin uh they're worldwide we told totaled about $9 billion in 1975 as compared to $6.5 billion the year before $2.5 billion do says they are doing well that it's very true Dr H let's summarize it would you say then that American consumer goods really hold their own in World Markets against any foreign competition absolutely uh it means competitiveness in price Prestige high quality distinctive styling attractive packaging and durability durability that's workmanship yes absolutely Martin so people in other countries like and respect what we in the United States make but the ships go both ways in the past two years the United States imported more than $200 billion worth of products from other countries we tend to think of American workmanship in terms of the assembly line immense and personal and designed for maximum productivity its ultimate end to produce X number of units per day per hour terribly familiar by implication quantity not quality only this isn't an American Plant this is the Volkswagen assembly works we are not the only people in the world with assembly lines seem to have a real fast ination for foreign assembly lines maybe because we don't work on them consider for instance the automobile its impact on life here is absolutely stunning one of every six people in the United States depends on the automotive industry for their livelihood but a lot of people besides Americans make cars and in the past year approximately 177% of the Americans who bought a car bought one that was made by workers in another country to give you an idea of what that preference means consider this at the request of the New York Times a Harvard Economist did some research and reported that for every $1 billion in Lost US Car Sales about 58,000 Americans lose their jobs that means $1 billion equals 58,000 lost jobs in 1975 import car and truck sales total in excess of $8 billion that's 464,000 jobs do the arithmetic again 58,000 * 8 equals 464,000 lost jobs so this preference for cars built by the workers of other countries has a tremendous impact on our economy the thing that I can't understand is I come here to take care of my claim I see all these other people laid off from tire companies and glass factories car manufacturers they wait in line to get their money and they go out into the parking lot and drive off in a foreign car they never put two and two together doesn't make any sense to me social scientists have pointed out that consumers approach a product not only in terms of its reality but also in terms of the myth surrounding it what you believe a product to be is what you buy but is what you believe reality or myth let's take a closer look the three basic areas of concern for the buyers of most products are how much does it cost to buy how much does it cost to keep working how long will it last all right let's look at the facts fact based on manufacturers suggested retail prices there are nine cars sold in the United States whose initial purchase price is less than $3,000 four of these cars the gremlin the pinto Pony the Chevette and the Vega are American fact according to the latest PA report on fuel economy 30 of the top 70 rankings belong to American manufacturers all of these vehicles were ranked at better than 20 m per gallon in the city 30 m per gallon on the highway and all achieved at least 25 MP gallon in the combined City Highway test fact two of the top six rankings the Chevrolet Chevette and the pinto Pony MPG are American so we are left with how long will this bright shiny new car last 84% of all the foreign cars that sold here from 1967 through 1970 are still on the road in comparison 85% of all the American cars sold during that period are still on the road so Going Back 9 years there's virtually no statistical difference between the durability of americ American and foreign cars or you can look at it this way if for instance you are still driving a 1966 Chevrolet like that one there are almost a million and a half other people just like you and about 18 million people who have an American car older than yours well if it isn't price and it isn't a fuel economy and it isn't durability then what is the difference I think the foreign car makers take more pride in workmanship the foreign manufacture seems to be more interested in the craftsmanship and the quality that goes into his product than in just how many units he produces in a given day well you see the farm car is put together differently they use all kinds of special techniques over there that's an interesting belief let's take a look this is a dson assembly l in Japan this is a Fiat assembly plant in Italy this is a chevet assembly plant in wilington Delaware these plants have much in common their workers take vacations and days off for illness just as anyone else and they are just as obligated to operate at a profit as any place else the myth is grown that small foreign cars especially those made in Europe are handcrafted by skill Old National Artisans foreign cars are built in Plants much like ours by people from many different countries and backgrounds just as we are in West Germany there are more than 2 and2 million so-called temporary foreign workers they come seeking work from less industrialized countries Greece turkey Italy Spain Yugoslavia and many of them find their way onto the assembly lines of the German manufacturer ing plants for the most part they come with limited technical skill they come to earn a different life just as American workers of all Races Creeds and ethnic backgrounds gravitated to the industrial centers in the United States so not all foreign products are built by Swiss watch makers on the other hand who builds American Products it's not like the old days where you know just casual just put a car together and that's it we ship it but uh right now it's quality is everything what do you say that well if we don't put out great quality uh no job no one buys who's going to feed my family I've talked to thousands of our guys I've represented uh the people in one capacity or another for the past 10 years and I can honestly say that I don't really know of anyone that I've met who doesn't want do a good quality job when he's at work in the plant Mike would you call that Pride well yeah it's pride pride my workmanship I call it uh my responsibility to my uh to myself that's how some American workmen see themselves and the men they work with you may see your job and the people work with you differently but by the managers of a number of foreign firms and by a number of americ American industrialists as well Robert Lund is a General Motors vice president and general manager of the largest US automobile operation Chevrolet Mr lond would you comment on these foreign manufacturers management decisions to set up operations here in this country well Martin I don't think it's very surprising to find foreign automobile manufacturers looking to develop assembly facilities here a lot of economic Factor could contribute to their decision foreign companies in other Industries Sony and Kawasaki for example have had highly successful manufacturing operations in the United States for years you don't make an investment of that magnitude without that confidence in the quality of your Workforce listen isn't a good deal of our success though due to purely technological advances well naturally the bottom line of technology is still people people who recognize needs people capable of developing the technology and most importantly people capable of operating it what you really need is a productive combination of all these skills well your bag really or automobiles give me an example as it applies to automobiles well if you want to use the automobile as an example I think you have to look at it this way there are more than 92 million americanmade cars on the road today in this country and each has something like 15,000 different parts in it to achieve this kind of quality and productivity the American worker has to be doing a phenomenal number of things right the American Workman has to be doing a phenomenal number of things right these Century old steam engines here in the Smithsonian Museum are an example that deserves more than a passing thought while our grandparents workmanship went into such innov ations they in turn would have considered as Miracles the things we scarcely notice except when they inconvenience us we've spent a large part of our time looking at American workmanship in the automobile industry not because it's the epitome of our craftsmanship but because one out of every six of us either contributes to or is dependent upon that product for our daily bread also because it's an area of manufacturer where we are in direct competition with the workers of many other countries we are the American workers we are not some faceless nameless Legion we are us you and me maybe we are not as good as we can be but we are better than we believe we are this has been Martin agronsky reported Martin oh now I'm wearing my readers that's why my eyes are bigger uh yeah I'm due for an eye appointment next week so I'm going to get some new um progressives man that that list of cars American cars versus the list of foreign cars boy it it speaks volumes and it's not about the quality of workmanship but I think it's the how uh car manufacturers decided to cut Corners in general uh with um the the parts that they Ed the way they were designed I like all you know the pinto the Vega it's like oh the grelin oh all right so behind me I have a a scanner I don't know where I am right there uh and I have a film uh and I don't know if this is related or not uh the title of it is called social Revolution I don't know what it is it's encyclopedia branica we're going to watch it enjoy e [Music] man has always lived in a world of change but in the past 200 years man's aspirations his way of life his technology and institutions have been changing more profoundly and more rapidly than ever before in his eternal search for happiness he has been moving swiftly along the road toward more of the good things of life and greater social justice these sweeping changes molding the modern world are called social Revolution hey that's an old timer isn't it yes sir Professor Oxford that press is over 100 years old it's one of the first presses ever used in this country you don't say the art of printing has certainly come a long way from that to these machines you're using now yes we've got some remarkable equipment now and we're using new and faster methods all the time oh so many things are happening to us Mr Douglas it's hard for one man to keep up with all the changes just think of all the literature that's being printed now there's no telling what will happen to us well there have always been changes professor and somehow we made out true true but the changes are becoming bigger and faster my friend it's social Revolution social Revolution what do you mean war no no on the contrary tell me what does the word revolution mean to you exactly Revolution well uh a sort of a a turning over that's it exactly now then let's refer to that turning over as a change there have been cases of extreme changes in governments with as you call it War involved when these changes occur within a country we call them Revolution how is social Revolution different how fast can you set up type practically as fast as you can talk all right then set up what I'm going to tell you I can use a few extra copies for my class ready number one you can say that any society in any country has a definite pattern that affects the lives of its citizens [Music] [Applause] number two the elements that compose this pattern are a economic B social C political you got that economic social political right [Applause] and now we come to number three this pattern is constantly changing and it affects the lives of the individuals in the following ways [Applause] a in the control of goods and services B in the distribution of power respect and other human [Applause] values I think I got it [Applause] now then all these things you've mentioned make up Social Revolution as long as we have changes which affect the way we live we have social Revolution and even this is part of that change the industrial revolution has been perhaps the greatest Force for change ever to arise in human society the use of power-driven machinery increased the individual's productive capacity until he found himself in a position to demand a larger share of the benefits of his Society more representation in government a higher standard of living men began to demand these things in England about 200 years ago and I say anyone who goes through that door to work this morning is a fool let the old man's looms gather rust until he starts paying us a decent wage but then wait won't put any food in our mes if something don't happen pretty soon come man we've got to stick together would you have every laborer in England pull in opposite direction time is on last side yeah time won't feed Maggie and the kids why don't you come home with me tell my wife we won't have no super again tonight come in don't tell me we're going to have trouble again today I have a warehouse full of cotton and wool the government doesn't do something pretty soon what do you want the government to do go against the people you manufacturers and Merchants have the answer break down and give the Working Man a decent wage I'm surprised at you Carter you've had some schooling you should know better I try to pay my men the best I can a lot of us in England are starting new Enterprises much more trouble like this and there won't be any jobs for anyone we got nothing to lose eh yes you have you have as much to lose as anyone don't you realize the more there is produced the more there will be for everyone the wool I have in there is for suits the more customers I have the more money I can pay you men and then you become my customers too my job the job of every manufacturer is to produce more that's the answer and then everyone can buy enough to satisfy his wants we're tired of promises Mr Matthews we want a decent standard of living yeah he's right you know yeah that's right I hope what you say is right about making enough so that we can all have a share so that we can have a little respect for ourselves and for men like you but promises Aren't Enough we've got to have full political rights so we can vote put men in Parliament who represent the laboring classes that'll come about give it time things are new and we're just getting started everything's changing so fast that we just haven't caught up yet go ahead talk it over democracy and the Machine were brought the horizons of the Common Man but demands for Freedom met resistance from ruling classes who would not compromise would not permit the growth of democratic institutions citizens were compelled to assert their rights by force and in certain Nations social Revolution became a violent change France in 1793 was torn by Strife when the people refused to be denied freedom and political power yes but in America citizen pain in your country in your Revolution you had no reign of terror none of this Bloodshed that is filling the gutters of Paris here the people have the power now the power which they had to tear away from the French Aristocrats but they do not seem quite ready to use it wisely citizen robespier they will learn in time the methods of peaceful democracy the conflict has been building up a long time now the explosion has come the Aristocrat should have compromised should have given your citizens their rights yes but there are other questions France is a nation of farmers with what you tell me of the new Machinery you have seen in England I foresee the day when the citizens will flock to the cities and that will bring new evils perhaps citizen Robespierre the cities are already growing there is already a change in the patterns and people's lives Society is constantly changing my friend Benjamin Franklin says the time is not too far when machines will make enough Comforts for all men and who will see to it that the citizens get a share of the things that they produce will not the rulers of every land try to keep the wealth for themselves they will try perhaps there is selfishness in every man but the citizens of the world will have new weapons with the New Wealth the Machinery will give them they'll be able to build schools to buy books to use democracy in intelligently someday the world will be a better place to live in it takes a little education and a little faith no Guillotines no Guillotines ah the new tool is reason compromise and understanding among men and let us hope that the day is not too far off when fine metal will be used for something better than to destroy man himself in the Years following the French reevolution the spirit of Freedom spread across Europe for thousands of years men had lived in the seclusion of their birthplaces accepting the station in life into which they were born their Horizons were the nearest Hill The Village Square and only the hardest ventured out into the world but the Industrial Revolution and new ideas made the individual more important to his Society modern technology was providing him with the tools he needed to satisfy his wants but but the rise of the Common Man clashed with tradition bound societies the old in many instances refused to make way for the new this Letter's great news Joseph it is a ticket to freedom to opportunity I think you are right Peter until this letter and the money came from my family in America I was about to give up all hope yes there is still not much in the Old Country even for the young here if you are born poor you die poor nothing ever changes and I am tired of being poor all I want is the chance for stal and myself then you had better leave as soon as possible the rulers in this country are blind they cannot see that they must let down the class barriers so that The Young and the strong can build for themselves the fact that you are leaving Joseph is this country's loss but America's game let us have a drink to that Joseph I think there's some wine left from the wedding in certain countries notably England and the United States Social Revolution proceeding gradually and with little violence began to give the Common Man greater opportunities more freedom and a larger share of [Music] power and first we'll fatten you up son and and then you'll come to work for me in the brewery if I can get all this for Stelling myself I I'd like to start work tomorrow morning I tell you Joseph there is plenty for everyone not afraid of work things are different here America is growing if you don't like a job here you take another if you don't like to live in one neighborhood you move to another and there is always the chance to fatten your pocketbook Joseph that's right Joseph there are no Aristocrats here it's even possible to save money and be high and mighty yourself C oh my proud peacock of a husband if we are such millionaires why is it that you watch the pennies that I spend at the market every day ah pay no attention to her my son she's just been living like a queen and it spoiled her really all this you father a foreman and Stanley there owns two wagons and is buying another and Nick going to the academy learning to read and write just like a priest and there is just as much opportunity for you Joseph this is all possible because the people on top here realize that their welfare is tied up with the welfare of the rest of us a man with a good head and good hands can rise as high as he wants if you don't like a political party here you vote for another and your vote counts for as much as the next man's even if you have been born a peasant you can work next to another man and gain his respect there's a big movement going and we're part of it though in certain Nations social change has followed followed this peaceful pattern there were other countries where conditions prevented peaceful and constructive social revolution in Central and Eastern Europe and Asia the people today have legacies of fear bitterness and hatred social revolution has been perverted and regressing Nazi Germany remains as one of the outstanding examples of a Nation where change LED to a society of violence and in 1917 the people of Russia revolted against the oppression of a ruling class which for centuries had stubbornly resisted progress toward democracy such complete and violent changes in the pattern of society frequently bring to power New tyrants equally determined to deny opportunity and oppose changes which do not suit their aims Freer societies have been created where social Revolution was carried out by a process of peaceful evolution in countries where resistance to change makes peaceful Evolution impossible revolutionary Trends May lead to widespread conflict War and the eventual breakdown of [Music] society but the current of social Revolution sweeps on in the world today there is no country which is not feeling the social revolutionary impulse the natives of darkest Africa the farmers of New Guinea the traitor of Bombay all have heard about the ideals of democracy and the promise of the rights of men Nations which today lead the world in peaceful and constructive change are facing a new challenge to take the constructive approach the technical ability and the Democratic beliefs of free Nations to the troubled areas of the world to help them to develop their wealth and to arouse the initiative of their peoples there it is think you can handle it without my help we can handle it all right I can't even pronounce this where's it going anyhow that's somewhere in a Army no I'm a construction engineer my company is sending me over to build a dam or two well it'll be a long time before I see that again a long time before you seal me again too you'll be there in a few weeks just as soon as I get located and after this job is over you'll accept no more jobs out of the country it's the last time I'm going to marry an engineer believe me I should hope so come on Susan you know it's not as bad as all that and you know how I feel about this job just think of the good it'll do for those people why we're going to build some of the largest dams in the world in areas where people are still living in a primitive fashion it'll revolutionize them completely they don't even know what electricity is and must it always be my husband who has to do these things believe me honey the shape the world is in somebody has to do these jobs it's more than just building d stands as many of us as possible have got to spread the gospel about the Democratic way of life we have to show all the people of the world the meaning of initiative and freedom that has helped make the Democratic Nation strong and happy it's our responsibility to help freedom spread this country can set the example we have the means to do the job today the world faces a momentous decision shall the efforts of men everywhere to achieve wider freedom and greater well-being be turned aside into violence and war or shall Men set themselves to the Peaceable task of building a free Society throughout the world this is the question posed by the on thrust of social Revolution the answer lies largely with the world's [Music] democracies wow that was was uh that was random uh I pulled a bunch of films from the storage unit and I was like well this one I don't know this might have I haven't seen this and uh so this one might work with Labor Day I don't know man it totally works with Labor Day uh the sense of Technology driving social change holy cow that film was awesome and you guys are awesome for letting me
