foreign hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and I've shown that film before but it's short and it's awesome uh and I believe it has a chick Korea soundtrack which is why I made it silent uh that film was rescued from a dumpster uh by someone I think in LA and then at some point they were like I have to clean out my closet and they reached out to me and sent me the film it was written on the can Tire rigging demo and it was made to show off some new equipment that this Film Production Company had acquired where they could mount a camera on the side of a car and film a tire doing this so this was a promotional film probably to show to clients who were working on like Tire commercials and saying like look we can have this beautiful footage of your tire uh on a car driving down a road and um so I like this because it's so very Niche this would not have been shown to the public um at all so anyways uh what we're doing today is uh I I was going to put together a whole show about the incident that happened last week where I hydroplaned uh where my tires the trade me but also that a highway engineer betrayed me by allowing for a highway an entire stretch of a highway to be just a sheet of water um and then how a highway engineer saved my life uh so anyways there will be films about hydroplaning and then at least one Christian film that we'll just throw in about that um so lots of sermonizing today all right this first film is water skiing on four wheels not as much fun as it sounds uh but enjoy yeah that permits us to start moving turn and do stop when we lose distraction well [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] a condition that often exists on roadways that calls for special driving skills and an adjustment of normal driving habits each year in the United States about 3 million accidents occur on wet roads at least 35 percent of these three million accidents can be assumed to involve skidding as a primary or secondary cause there are a number of different situations that can contribute to reduced traction situations where the needed gripping power of the tires exceeds the traction available on the road surface this can result in increased stopping distance loss of directional stability and loss of operator control the tires on your car have a great deal to do with the amount of traction you have each of these two cars do you think will stop in the shortest distance on dry paper car number one that has radio tires with good tread or car number two that is equipped with well-worn tires demonstrations prove that a car with well-worn or smooth tires will stop in a shorter distance on dry pavement many people believe that the tread on tires is for traction on dry pavers not so actually the tire tread's main job besides reducing operating temperature to provide longer mileage is providing traction on wet surfaces if it were possible to drive only on completely dry pavement and you didn't care about tread mileage slick tires would be great but let's try the same stopping demonstration with the two cars on wet Pig and you will readily see that Slicks or worn Treads just don't do the job on wet surfaces a wet weather weekend and a road race will also prove the reduced attraction of slicks on wet surfaces even top race drivers don't look forward to driving in wet weather the reason for this is that the Slicks Float On The Water losing contact with the pavement this loss of traction is known as aquaplaning commonly called hydroplaning when this occurs you can actually lose control of your car when just cruising down a straight stretch of road Dynamic hydroplaning is the result of water penetrating between tires and the pavement this causes water pressure which can raise a portion of the tire off the pavement the pressure increases with increased vehicle speed until the tire can be completely supported by water and actually be floating at this point the driver loses nearly all control foreign tires are able to maintain traction between the tire and pavement by channeling the water through the tread grooves in some locations Pavements have been grooved somewhat similar to tires to provide greater traction under wet weather conditions regardless of the condition of the tires that are on your car getting the brakes on wet pavement can instantly turn your car into a giant water ski and the more bald the tires are the better they ski in this demonstration at a test track a vehicle traveling at 55 miles per hour will pass over a plate of glass covered with only 80 thousandths of an inch of water a green dye in the water permits a high-speed camera mounted below to show you how this water pressure prevents a partially worn tire from making any contact with the road anytime the water is deeper than the tread depth on your tires hydroplaning can occur complete hydroplaning with a total loss of traction needed for steering and braking can occur at speeds as low as 30 miles per hour actually at even lower speed partial hydroplaning occurs and is a more common happening which can be every bit as dangerous as complete hydroplaning when it first starts to rain a gooey paste forms on the highway and causes a viscous type of hydroplaning this happens when the first drops of water combine with the dirt dust oil and grease on the road surface and can be slicker than an ice skating rink and even when heavy rains wash away much of the muck don't forget that wet pavement is slicker than dry pavement and wet rubber provides less traction than dry rubber viscous hydroplaning can occur without rain a little Dew from the dab night air is all that's needed to take away your traction think about this when you're out driving during the wee hours to sum it all up hydroplaning occurs when the condition of the tire tread tire inflation pressure speed of the car and water depths on the road are combined in such a way that the tire loses contact with the road and how can you avoid the dangerous and hair-raising experience of hydroplaning into a wild skin first of all drive on tires that have an open wide Groove tread design that lets the water Escape quickly and not build up in front of the tires low profile tires have more tread on the road surface and provide for safe and sure handling under nearly all road conditions however with more rubber on a wet Road the tire will more readily get up on top of the water some people think that if you let some air out of your tires you'll get better traction on wet pavement actually it's just the opposite if you use maximum recommended tire pressure a car isn't as likely to hydroplane at lower speeds for example with only 16 pounds of pressure your tires could hydroplane at about 41 miles per hour with 24 pounds of pressure the hydroplaning speed is increased to over 50 miles per hour with 32 pounds of pressure under the same conditions your Tire's wooden hydroplane until you were traveling over 58 miles per hour so use maximum recommended inflation for safer driving on wet pavement also try to match your tires so that those with similar tread Groove depth are on the same axle if you do hydroplane you may as well do it straight ahead the most important rule to follow when driving under any reduced traction situation is to reduce your speed to fit the road conditions so you can control your vehicle during all driving maneuvers consider that the entire stopping and turning control of several thousand pounds is dependent on only four contact areas with the road each above the size of a man's hand the faster you drive the less traction and control you have be a smooth driver try to maintain an even speed and steady path of travel any increase or decrease in speed or any change in Direction May well result in a skid the more abruptly you make any of these changes the more likely you are to skid if the steering wheel begins to feel loose or your tires make a slushing sound your tires are starting to hydroplane this is the time to gradually let up on the accelerator and stay away from the brakes watch for standing water or puddles especially on curves when you see patches of water while the water is deep enough to cover the unevenness of the pavement assume that there's enough for hydroplaning drive toward the center of the road where it is normally higher the water not as deep this also keeps you away from the shoulders that are often soft and muddy deep water should be avoided if possible if you must cross a deep area drive at a slow steady speed to avoid water pile up in front of the vehicle the ground Archer ignition apply gentle and steady brake pressure with the left foot to help prevent the brakes from getting wet when you are out of the deep water check your brakes if they need drying depress the brakes gently for a few seconds with your left foot while accelerating Tire wipes are the tracks left on wet pavement by a vehicle in front of you Drive in these Tire wipes and you'll have a drier surface and better traction in all cases of reduced traction allow a greater space cushion between your car and other vehicles both to the side and front remember our stopping demonstration even the car with new radial tires took almost twice as much stopping distance on wet pavement as on dry pavement passing is one of the most critical Maneuvers we make even when road conditions are ideal when you have reduced traction allow a greater than normal space between you and oncoming traffic and above all be patient wait until Road and traffic conditions will allow you to pass safely remember when you start through an intersection or enter a roadway you'll need more time to make the move whatever the cause of reduced traction might be all drivers sooner or later experience a loss of traction and skidding action of their car if your car does begin to Skid remember to steer in the direction that you want the front of the car to go to straighten the car when the rear of the car slides left turn the steering wheel left if the rear fishtails right in over correcting to straighten the car turn the steering wheel right for the safest stop on a reduced traction surface keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and gently pump the brakes in Rapid succession make steering Corrections when you let up on the brake whenever you're on any roadway during conditions of reduced traction throw out the anchor and reduce your speed increase the amount of space cushion between you and other traffic do everything gently remember that all of the other drivers on the road are also trying to keep control of their cars under slippery conditions the loss of control by one driver can affect the safety of many others so knowing the condition of your tires learning to judge road conditions and controlling your speed and keep you from the potentially dangerous practice of water skiing on four wheels [Music] foreign [Music] seems like they've done a lot of films that I have for AAA and they show up every once in a while I think I've got some other things that they covered but it was mostly driver safety stuff um so let's see what we got um let's watch something I have set up on the scanner behind me um break it up a little bit a little bit of about hydroplaning a little bit about Christian dilemmas um this is uh as for me and my house enjoy foreign foreign [Music] oh turn around Grandpa now let me see oh Carl Yes dear you come here a moment please right away dear I'll be back in a minute Grandpa You Know Carl was having quite a time trying to tie this thing not as easy as it looks lots of ways of tying knots some good some bad but there's one notch you ought to be sure you tie the right way and that's the wedding knot say I'd like to tell you about one that didn't hold so very well it all started last summer when Julie Desmond lived close schoolmate of Emily's was vacationing with us while her father was in South America on business [Music] cutie what are you thinking about you look like you're riding on cloud number eight I am Emily I am what might that mean coming from a girl it could mean almost anything no Peter don't pay any attention to him Julie you sure do look happy Julie I bet it's about her boyfriend oh he's so right Pete it is about Ned I was going to surprise you but I can't keep it any longer I got a wire from NED this afternoon he'll be here any minute to set the date for our wedding Julie always so wonderful are you I suppose you wait till your father returns from South America well I'd like to but you know how the exporting business is Dad can't leave well if you're planning on getting married this Summer Julie what about school Ned graduated last week and he's got a good job in Decatur if we got married this Summer I could go to school back there Julie I hope I'm going to be your maid of honor by all means after the ceremony Julie we can have the wedding reception here and Pastor Martin can I'll get it Julie laughs [Laughter] this is man I never would have guessed it now grandpa I'm glad to know you Ned I'm glad to know you sir and this is Anna and Kyle Ned we're delighted to meet you we're certainly on Ed Mrs Emily Peter Eddie hi hi hi well son we just heard the news congratulations thanks thanks a lot I am a lucky guy I'm lucky too when's it going to be well that's what I came to find out well just setting the day shouldn't take too long that is unless you're going to stay around here I can see I'm going to like you I hope so now don't you worry about us you two just run along I'm sure it's all right maybe we will good night good night what you're talking about is two months off I know but there's so much to do so many plans to make do we have to have all that fuss can we just get married Julie do you know how much I love you oh Ned I love you too Let's Get Married tonight oh darling I wish we could why can't we what's wrong with getting married tonight [Music] Lord Ned I've always wanted a church wedding with with Pastor Martin and all our friends around us I've got the license right here and I've got a ring in my pocket and I know of the Justice of the feast right outside Decatur wrong with that [Music] the only important thing is is that we love each other but I'm only going to be married once and all my life I've dreamed of a church wedding I know how important a church wedding is to you but but all those plans will take months and I want you now I want you too and if anyone has any reason why this marriage should not take place let him speak now or forever hold his peace Now by virtue of the powers invested in me by this state I pronounce you man and wife foreign Ned and I just married in Decatur very happy see you soon love Julie I just can't believe that it's not it's not a thing like this I know she had her heart set on a wedding at church apparently that wasn't important to Ned I hope she hasn't made a mistake there isn't much we can do about it now well things went along smoothly for Julian Ned for a few months they seem truly in love and we're as happy as any young married couple could be or at least they thought they were and then one Sunday morning breakfast is ready dear [Music] Ned what's the rush I'm late Our Father we thank thee look I'm in a hurry can't we skip that oh Julie is is it necessary at every meal Ned I'm sorry darling it seems like such a waste of time I don't like to hear you talk like that Ned but it's the truth Julie I just don't get it I told you before I don't mind about your church stuff but you have to bring it home haven't you learned by now that what I believe in is a part of me wherever I am let's skip it I gotta pick up Harry Stimson at 9 30. I do [Music] well this was only the beginning oh they got over it and Julie gave up saying grace at least not loud and life returned what seemed like normal hello oh Hello darling yes dinner's nearly ready why we'll have to hurry it up Harry's giving a party tonight wants us to come but Ned you know I can't go tonight my choir practice well ordinarily I could but well I promised I'd do a solo next Sunday and I have to rehearse tonight but I promised Harry we'd come I'm sorry Ned I I just can't you know Julie this is beginning to happen too often Ned is this a fair so important never mind you go to your choir practice and I'll go to Harry's [Music] well Julie didn't wait up for him as a matter of fact she cried herself to sleep long before Ned came home but as young people in love will do they kissed and made up and for a few weeks things went along pretty well and then one evening early in December dear Julie a few lines to say hello time we would love to have both of you spend it with us and the choir could certainly use you for our special Christmas music let us know if you can make it looking forward to seeing you and Ned with love from all the Fishers Emily oh Ned let's do it you'll love Middleburg at Christmas time I'm not so sure what do you mean I thought we were going to have a good time on my vacation the sound of that letter you'd be spending most of your time at the church but it'll be Christmas sure there are lots of parties here in town we've been invited to I know but but I'd rather be in Middleburg oh For Heaven's Sake Julie this is our first vacation let's go out and go places and get a little excitement Ned spending Christmas in Middleburg can be exciting too maybe your idea of excitement differs from mine how do you know you won't like it I just don't want to get mixed up in that kind of stuff and besides the fishes are my type of people but Ned they're just like me and while we're on that subject another thing about all this money you're giving to the church you still don't understand how much a part of my life my religion is do you you're not going to start that again no Ned I think it's time we finished it I've come to realize that this isn't just a little difference between you and me it's it's a whole world well maybe I have been a little too critical about your church activities no it's not the criticism I know now that we're living for different things it's deeper than you think Ned I'm beginning to think we're different types of people now look Julie aren't you being a little ridiculous after all no Ned I mean it Julie don't you love me anymore oh Ned it's because I do love you that I want you to understand that that there's something missing in our marriage no what do you mean faith in Christ common faith a faith in which we both can share no For the Love of Mike this is what I mean Ned you think that my belonging to church is like you're belonging to your Golf Club Ned my religion is not a hobby it's as vital to my life as as breathing itself okay okay look this is our first Christmas together it's not spoil it by having a silly argument it isn't a silly argument it's something that has to be settled once and for all Julie aren't you being a little dramatic I'm being realistic Ned either you believe in Christ or you don't if you do you go in One Direction if you don't you go in another oh Ned don't you know I want us both to go in the same direction I can't change myself you say you love me well this is my way of life and if you want to share it it's up to you then all the things I've been saying don't mean anything but they can mean something to you if you want them to but don't try to force it on me no no no I can't forget it you can't forget that maybe you can forget me [Music] Glory from my kids operator this is Ned Thomas are you sure there haven't been any calls for me thank you [Music] thank you [Music] Julie [Music] Julie [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] good afternoon you're Ned Thomas yes I'm Pastor Martin from Middleburg oh yeah I heard Julie talk about you well come in thank you [Music] sit down [Music] how'd you know where to find me Julie no I was in Decatur on business and I I wanted to say hello so I went to the address Julie had given me but there was no answer and the manager there told me that your mail was being forwarded to this address I think you'll find Julie in Middleburg that the Fishers oh I see I suppose you'll be joining her there for the Christmas holidays man well I'm not so sure I'd be welcome oh since we'll find out anyway I might as well tell you Pastor Julie and I before we sort of come at a Crossroads in our marriage can I be of any help I doubt it what was it what came between you then religion I see I believe I understand Julie has always been a fine Christian girl yes but she took a religion too seriously too seriously that's Ryan when I finally got fed up we began to argue has it occurred to you Ned that the things about Julie you've argued over were the very things that made her the lovely girl you married but I love Julian and I think she loves me when we were married that's all that counted and we were happy but now the whole Deal's changed perhaps you were both wrong in thinking that love was the only thing that mattered at the time you were married it never is Ned that's what I don't get why isn't it I believe you're an architect aren't you yeah I don't suppose you would think of starting a building using two architects each with a different set of plans would you of course not it's pretty much the same with marriage up to a point you can build a marriage without religion they'll both hold together for a while just as you can build a house without reinforcement but when there's a heavy strain the only strain in our marriage was caused by religion could it be Ned that it's just a case of one architect wanting to pay the price for a solid reinforcement while the other architect doesn't believe in it you see Julie's plans for a happy and Lasting marriage go back to a designer who builds forever not just for a day no I don't know I guess I'm all mixed up dead may I be very Frank with you sure go ahead you need Julie but much more than Julie you need someone else in a few days we'll be celebrating his birthday why don't you come to church this Christmas and learn what Christ has meant to Julie and what he can mean to you do you still think I did wrong Julie you did a number of things you really shouldn't have done I know but I've been so mixed up it's hard to know what is right look Julie I don't like to say this but you're elopement but you know that wasn't a way to start married life I know I was sorry the very next day and Julie these arguments you've been having that isn't what the Lord expects from a Christian wife if Ned didn't believe in Christ it was your duty to be such a good Christian such a loving and beautiful wife that finally someday he may have said that's the kind of faith in life I want to have I want to believe and be the kind of person Julie is that's what I was trying to do really I was that's what you wanted to do dear but by your arguing you've done just the opposite come on girl we have to get down to church well that's right we've got to help with the decorations I'll drive the car on while you get your coats dude it'll help put your mind on something else we won't be gone too long that's all right we'll keep busy or we've ready yeah ready I'm gonna make a real long strength thank you Peter bye good night get me some gifts hey hey wait a minute you're gonna eat us right out of business you know we're supposed to make strings with that young fella just testing it Grant just testing you're always testing when there's popcorn around you're still testing I see [Music] well well Ned how are you come in hi boys did Judy here why no Ned she isn't done with the church helping with the decorations but she'll be back soon come in and sit down no thanks Grandpa I'll go down to church I want to talk with her all right we'll see you later then yeah yeah good night sir [Music] well choosing as your wedding text those well-known words of scripture as for me and my house we will serve the Lord Christ is to be the head of your house the Unseen guest at every meal silent listener to every conversation throughout those happy days that lie ahead his presence will go with you hallowing every precious moment that you spend together [Music] you're packing these candy boxes we can go and help Mother and Dad with the tree [Music] we're just about out of curtains could I get some more there's some more in this accuracy there will always be the three of you Christ and you Martha and you Robert and as long as each of you will put your hand into the hand of Christ by faith no power on Earth can divide you as you begin today to build the structure of your future happiness make sure that Christ is the Cornerstone the Firm Foundation upon which you'll rest the ultimate achievement of all your fondest hopes and dreams marriage as we know is an estate instituted by God himself marriage therefore is Holy and acceptable to our Lord how blessed indeed is that marriage where not only two hands are joined in Wetland but where two hearts are knit together in a common faith in Christ the savior troubles there will be pains heartaches disappointments but your hearts having been joined in a common faith in Christ the savior you will be able to walk hand in hand bringing your common problems to a common father and as you stand together in his presence you will find peace and pardon and the power to surmount every circumstance of life how wrong I was Julie can we start all over again like that yes like that oh [Music] and now I pronounce you husband and wife in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Ghost amen foreign that was a mighty happy moment and a few days later Ned had a long talk with Pastor Martin told him that he'd come to see things Julie's way and wanted their marriage based on a common faith in Christ the savior fact is it right now we're all getting ready to go to church for the consecration of their marriage okay Dad I can finish that tie now there that does it now it's finally tied the way it ought to have been [Music] who oh Ned you know you think that in the course of them courting that she would have made him go to church because it was that much important to him um also the Let's Get Married tonight that's totally someone who wants to have sex that comes up in some other films that I have about like why are we putting on why are we going through all this Pomp and Circumstance let's go ahead and just do it all right um what do I got oh yeah another film about driving in wet weather this is the war on wet weather accidents enjoy who bought the smallest of us it's nothing new and certainly nothing to be feared [Music] and yet it affects our lives in many different ways it can be at one on the same time pearls on a petal or rivalence of Danger on our roads and highways [Music] when rain falls the battle on the highway in rain slick highways are every driver's enemy any roadway situation that causes a driver to make abrupt maneuvers [Music] yeah the hazards of other cars and roadside structures can become almost invisible until when it is too late for a life-saving reaction most drivers know that wet weather driving is dangerous they know that roads are Slicker When Wet but few take the necessary precautionary measures [Music] the wet weather accident rate is often 10 times that of the dry weather rate [Music] in a concentrated effort to reduce the toll of wet weather accidents Engineers of the Texas Highway Department the Federal Highway Administration and the Texas Transportation Institute are conducting extensive studies to determine ways of reducing wet weather accidents thank you [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] what causes wet weather accidents [Music] what is the role of the driver the vehicle and the road in these accidents what can drivers do to combat wet weather accidents answering these questions is the goal of research [Music] tests prove that when identical Vehicles lie Pavements the stopping distance can double on the wet surface [Music] what makes the difference foreign [Music] Ty to develop forces between the tire and the road surface [Music] in defining this change the influences of rainfall intensity Tire factors and Road surface characteristics are critical [Music] one way of measuring these influences is by using a skid trailer this skid trailer tests the friction between tires and road surfaces the friction is measured by locking the brakes on one wheel of the trailer [Music] the friction force that is generated between the tire and the wet pavement is then measured electronically a range of test surfaces has been constructed at Texas a M's Highway Safety Research Center the coarser the texture of the pavement surface the greater the frictional force smooth slick surfaces lower the grip of the tires on the road in determining tire and pavement influences a Rainmaker is used to simulate different rates of natural rainfall [Music] drainage conditions affect the friction capabilities of both coarse and smooth Pavements of coarse texture and pavement surface with an adequate cross flow for drainage provides the best driving surface during wet weather when it is raining a smooth Road surface and poor provision for drainage May reduce Tire pavement friction to a dangerous level [Music] another aspect of this work is to determine the polishing characteristics of Highway services traffic polishes a road surface and slowly decreases the capability to develop friction many roads which had excellent friction characteristics when built have been Polished by millions of vehicle passes until they are very smooth by subjecting different Highway surface materials to the simulated action of traffic the best constituents for pavement construction can be identified two methods are used to determine the changes in surface materials due to simulated traffic the first is a direct friction measurement using the standard pendulum device the more the friction the lower the pendulum Rises after sliding on the surface [Music] the second method which gives information on what is actually happening to the surface is the stereoscopic microscope examination foreign [Music] however good friction does not solve all of the wet weather driving problems during or just after a hard rain water May collect on the road despite good drainage slopes even during light rain puddles may form in the wheel paths worn by traffic in either case vehicles moving through these water accumulations may be subject to hydroplaning what is hydroplaning when a tire rides up on the surface of the water like water skis on a lake [Music] the tire is hydroplaning when an automobile Tire rolls at a low speed over a surface covered by a layer of water the tire squeezes out the water and makes contact with a road surface as the speed is gradually increased a critical speed is reached where there is not enough time to force the water out from between the tire and pavement the tire then rides on the water which results in loss of contact with a road surface this can be seen because the tire spins down and stops foreign when this occurs the driver has no steering control and brakes will have no effect on stopping [Music] a hydroplaning trough and an offset towed trailer are used to study hydroplaning Tire treads High tire pressure and rough road surfaces help disperse the water between the tire and the pavement and reduce the risk of hydroplaning however these experiments have shown that hydroplaning can occur on good road surfaces at speeds less than the legal limit poor tire and road conditions can result in hydroplaning at speeds as low as 40 miles per hour a fourth part of the current research is devoted to the automobile what are the wet weather handling characteristics of different automobiles [Music] for example is this Volkswagen safer or less safe than this Ford [Music] answering questions like these requires the consideration of many factors and the answer may very well be different for different drivers by subjecting a variety of cars to a series of safety related maneuvers these answers are being sought but what is being done now to reduce these hazards because of information from research the state legislature has recognized the disastrous effect that poor tires can have on wet weather driving our legislators have enacted a state law requiring the maintenance of a minimum tire tread depth of 1 16 of an inch improved construction and maintenance practices are being rapidly implemented by Highway engineers [Music] better surface drainage is being provided roadway geometrics are constantly improved [Music] skid trailers are operating across the state to identify hazardous sites that may be developing due to the polishing of traffic A New Concept of wet weather speed zoning is under investigation which can be used in the interim before physical changes are made on the roadway a variety of other signs are now in use provide motorists with warnings of dangerously wet Highway sections a these signs are not placed without good cause and should be acknowledged by lowering speeds however no matter how many improvements are made in highways and Automobiles the accident rate will decrease only slightly unless there are significant changes in driving habits the most important element of safe driving is the driver he must maintain control over the vehicle in a hostile environment he is the Ultimate Warrior against wet weather accidents critical importance visibility in Rain the higher the speeds the more limited the driver's vision the wipers cannot work fast enough to keep the windshield clear the time a driver has for defensive Maneuvers is critically diminished [Music] although a highway is designed to meet rigid standards for site distance it cannot be designed for Blinded drivers by turning on low headlight beams you can help other drivers see you [Music] too often drivers do not compensate for the hazards of wet weather driving or feel so skillful they can compensate for slick roads and poor visibility this is a most serious mistake in judgment [Music] drivers must recognize rainfall as a formidable enemy and exercise a definite strategy to win the battle against wet weather accidents summarizing the specific precautions a driver can take first keep alert be aware of the road condition indications of danger include puddling in the wheel paths and a slick looking glossy Highway surface [Music] be reduced if a surface looks dull and rough it probably has good traction qualities even so speed must be adjusted for visibility second tires should be checked often they need deep tread and maximum tire pressure [Music] the maximum pressure recommendations can be found on the side of every Tire if there is a significant layer of water on the road surface speed should be reduced to 40 miles per hour to assure that hydroplaning cannot occur third limitations must be respected each driver should maintain windshield wipers and turn on low headlight beams [Music] it is important that you see other drivers and it is equally important that they see you speed must be reduced in proportion to reduced visibility finally whatever the wet weather conditions may be the safest measure any driver can take is to slow down allow more time to think and react to any hazardous situation that might develop yes rain may be necessary to our lives in many ways but its presence is a threat on the highway research can provide the answers needed for safe wet weather travel But ultimately only the driver can provide the solution there is a war on our highways it has taken more lives than all our other Wars combined when will we decide that too many lives have been lost the answer my friend in your hands [Music] wow that was uh that was pretty heavy um but man speaking the truth uh and I think that um because of Highway Engineers I was not horribly injured in my accident last week because of when I was spinning around on the highway and then went off the embankment uh and then up the embankment um I didn't hit anything like I got slowed down so my airbags didn't deploy and I also slowed down so I didn't end up on the other side of the highway uh facing traffic so pretty lucky and the car did not get totaled it's expensive to repair but I have insurance um so and I survived I didn't get hurt my my wrist is sore but
