AV Geeks 16mm Lunch 9-18-2023

huh everybody calm down hi everybody I'm skip Allison oh I don't even have the Simon I'm all discombobulated um we got back late last night uh driving straight from Bloomington Indiana where the uh Century of 16 millimeter uh conference took place and I said I was going to take pictures and I didn't I uh uh because I was in a car accident on Route I was all a little discombobulated um it might be why I'm discombobulated now uh I'm fine but it just threw off everything a day and there was a lot of scrambling and setting up equipment and rental cars and all that stuff so but I do have this to show um at my so Friday this last Friday I did a presentation about AV Geeks and about who I am and how we got here and where we're going and then I did a 16 millimeter screening and a reception and um Matthew May who you might know is zymon zeiman and he told me and I'm still messing it up um came to my presentation and you can see I'm wearing uh 16 millimeter Jersey and I have a headband which makes it look like I have a weird toupee uh but anyways he he showed up he drove two hours so thank you uh he also hung out with Katrina um who came with me and met a lot of my peers and uh it was a great conference and the most exciting thing there was a lot of exciting things going on but the most exciting thing was that there were there were at the final reception Katrina and I went up to these uh two South Korean gentlemen who work at the South Korean film archive and we kind of introduced ourselves and their panel was before mine so I didn't get a chance to see it because I was getting like shopping equipment and all this stuff um but anyways I gave them my card and one of them looked at it and said oh yes AV Geeks I'm subscribed to your YouTube channel and that is the most exciting that was the most exciting part of that conference there was a lot of great stuff and seeing a lot of friends and seeing a lot of meeting new people but finding out that you're introducing yourself to strangers and they're like oh I know who you are in South Korea so excited anyways I am back until Thursday and then I fly to Austin Texas uh for fantastic Fest and assorted stuff but uh we will be live uh and showing you films it'll be great so behind me I have a film scanner and I don't even know if this is working because I decabled something and um the crazy thing is I recorded a show that I can't find now I don't know where it went um uh let me see the name of this film so I might have to like re-record it I'm walking around now um what is the name of this film again I'll just combatulate uh an end uh to the darkness I think that's what it is over into darkness we'll see all right um hopefully this is gonna work enjoy this is uh this is annoying and then it just kind of crashed what is going on all right uh we're gonna watch uh Management's role in health safety enjoy [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] coal mining is one of the most hazardous major industries in the United States today over the past 20 years more than six thousand Mine Workers have been killed in our minds the American public has become more aware of the health and safety problem in our minds and they have become more concerned we must protect the health of our coal miners fatalities and injuries must be drastically reduced now the best way this can be achieved is through control of the working environment and the actions of the people who work in that environment now only management can Implement such controls that is why primarily safety must start with tough management [Music] many mining companies have their own individualized safety program or plan for eliminating accidents let's listen to one of the more successful mine safety programs being discussed enjoyed this and got as much out of it as the rest of us thank you Mr Gardner for inviting me to a safe meeting it's been quite informative we're happy to have you Ron I'm glad to be here I'd like to ask you a few questions if you don't mind well of course not you go right ahead well you know Mr Gardner your company has an extraordinary safety record to What specifically can you attribute this accomplishment there's probably no one specific thing to which I can credit our low injury record I can say that above everything else safety is our first consideration that's our corporation's philosophy our way of life what is the most significant feature of your safety program the essence of our program is that health and safety are built into our whole mining operation from the planning a facility construction through the mining and preparation of coal do your health and safety programs ever cost more than profits will permit no not in the long run possibly the initial cost of building uh an extensive all-encompassing safety program will be high but we feel that since a man's safety and well-being are directly related to his productive capacity and investment in safety is a definite investment in the future our company's future as well as the workers we can understand that with continually Rising costs such as insurance and compensation any preventive measures you take now will certainly pay dividends in the future but can you give us some idea how a proven practical mind safety plan works our people have developed the basic safety program that's been highly effective for us in reducing accidents over the years we've modified and improved the plan according to actual mining experience and needs we know that it's fundamentally sound and it can be highly useful to many mining companies who wish to set up a new safety program or improve or reinforce or supplement an existing one safety cannot be delegated the foreman since the foreman is a key man in production he should be to keep the general precept behind the safety program presented is that line management is directly accountable for safety performance provide each Miner with a self-rescuing device to be worn on your belt or to be close the program had to include the means of increasing safety Knowledge and Skills effective accident prevention too and training provided by top management accomplished this and enabled line management to translate the paper safety programs into programs of action three separate parts we have the the sensing head the detecting unit and the battery pack or the power unit three important factors were recognized in the development of this safety program the first was that greater emphasis would be placed upon the analysis and interpretation of safety statistics records accident occurrences and investigations the second Factor was that various safety activities would be conducted and recorded some of these activities were individual safety contacts where once a week Foreman would personally talk with individual workmen on the job discuss with them the hazards involved and precautions to be taken convey changes in operating procedures and evaluate the individual's job knowledge another activity was safety observations where Foreman are directly responsible for observing and evaluating each employee's work at least twice a month to detect potential accident causes reveal problem jobs and conditions and to evaluate educational efforts you know the importance of other activities where safety meetings conducted once a week by Foreman with their Crews in addition to the normal observations planned monthly Tool and Equipment inspections were made by the foreman defective tools were then immediately repaired or replaced [Music] the third factor in the safety program development was safety appraisal included in this was company mine inspections rigid and thorough inspections with emphasis on ventilation and roof control the more frequent and thorough the company's inspections the fewer safety violations and less need for state or federal punitive action and the more time and money saved also included in this appraisal was the reporting of all safety violations from company state and federal inspections covering the number and type of formal reprimands assessed employees and the evaluating and reporting of employees safety performance as reflected by the frequency and severity of mine injuries the performance records kept on each individual minor were valuable in planning individual training and follow-up needs information gathered from the safety activities analysis and appraisals was utilized to check workers compliance with safety performance standards established by the program it was then determined where and what changes for improvement were needed safety analysis of job elements is a continuing activity where everyone is involved the need is to standardize and improve program methods according to actual on-the-job experience therapy another important factor in the effectiveness of a safety plan is the time or experience an employee has on the job in performing a specific task statistics show that the first week on a new job is the most dangerous a man is more prone or likely to have an accident even older more experienced minors who change jobs after 20 years on the ground are more susceptible to accidents during their first month on a new job therefore when a man is employed by a company he should be given proper training in both job skills and safety practices and then follow-up training in basic Elemental safety awareness and practices a minor must be provided a safe place in which to work with proper tools and machines to do his job so that he'll be able to devote full energies to his work without danger to his life and health it is Management's responsibility to see that these conditions and materials are available thank you good morning Andy how are you today good morning Jim fine thank you how's yourself oh I'm just fine it's a nice [ __ ] stop in your building there it is also the responsibility of managers and supervisors to take every opportunity to praise or commend employees for their efforts to do their work safely [Music] supervisors should encourage their men to speak up or Express their safety needs they should be willing to exchange ideas on accident prevention to get the men personally involved in job safety analysis and they should follow through to see that all good ideas are considered and acted upon there's a couple things that I noticed while when I lived this car here that uh for our cable goes under the piping there it should be insulated through there and we could use a couple of uh insulators for our daily our fire extinguisher we put up on a poster I don't apart places where it should be actually if this is done and if workmen know that their ideas will be considered and acted upon much will be accomplished toward the development of safe attitudes and behavior morale and the overall Spirit of cooperativeness and toward reducing accidents presently the federal Coal Mine health and safety act of 1969 deals with many physical elements of mind health and safety and prescribes minimum standards that must be met by management but what we are seeking is a revolution in the minds a revolution not only in mining technology but also in the attitudes and behavior of both management and workers towards mind health and safety industry's best hope for achieving this Revolution and the reduction of injuries is through an effective safety program that stresses better supervision backed by appropriate corrective action the safety program should also stress adequate safety education directed toward getting employees to think safety and act safely contact with the worker this is your on and off button here these are your control leaders and sufficient on-the-job training to teach the necessary skills job methods and operating procedures to the men who work in our nation's mining industry [Music] health and safety is just one element in the total minerals utilization system but it is one that affects not only the future of the mining industry and the individual minor but one that affects the future of our nation itself the coal mine must be made a safe and healthy place in which to work the miners must be trained to work there in a safe manner please our Management's primary roles in health and safety roles no manager can afford to ignore Ron I hope you found this is productive and as enjoyable country of my childhood and I see it now stretching green and infinite in my memory I see the village of my father and his father before him decide if it warms me touches my heart time changes but little my land and its people they follow the old ways in all things they do [Music] neither my land nor its people have changed I have changed Story of My Life glows on the horizon of my memory like a sunset and like a sunset I know that God fashioned it I remember the response that was my puppy came minor [ __ ] in abundant land [Music] I remember the golden grain at Harvest Time and the people who labored in my fields and look to me as head man foreign [Music] no I shall never forget the pride that was mine in those days more Pride than a young man should allow in his heart [Music] I worked with the others filled with the joy of possession one day my brother ponabella called to me foreign [Music] this crippled boy all the love that a father knows for his son [Music] my head man to take over and went off to meet whenever [Music] [Music] on the way to the Village we passed my storage compound and there I paused to let the Rice run through my fingers like flakes of gold with panabaya beside me in such Riches of my own I felt sure of myself and the world mostly my world was the village of my birth I knew it's every Sight and Sound it's people in their ways and I loved it as all men everywhere love home [Music] The Village fortune teller could always be found reading a man's future and we stood in awe of him my people to this day live in dread of the unknown afraid of spirits and dark Forces The Sound of Music Drew us away [Music] musicians in the living a pair of leopard dancers were performing [Music] of course I had to make certain that little ponabella could see it all and enjoy it [Music] the old songs had come down to us across the span of generations and they lifted us for there was laughter in the ivory trumpet and Magic In The rhythms and they gave life to our feet and wings to our spirits [Music] foreign [Music] but on this particular day something happened something unfamiliar puzzling intriguing there was a newcomer in the village [Music] we watched him from a distance thinking at first that here was another fortune teller or performer but suddenly he pointed to the strange symbols that meant the fruit in my hand and I began to understand that this man was teaching the magic of words grew bored and said let's go but I wanted to know more and decided to join the others [Music] The Strangers spoke in our tongue and yet he seemed very different from my people and I had heard of his coming and we knew that the village Elder had denounced him but I liked listening to him and even greeted him suddenly I heard the village Elder and his voice was Heavy with the anger in it he called out against the stranger and ordered us to leave him he shouted that this word magic would anger the spirit of darkness and bring disaster to our village [Music] but something kept me there in spite of the village Elder perhaps it was because I wish to learn words perhaps it was something about the stranger himself perhaps it was that pride of mine of which I had too much The Village Elder was very angry with me and went directly to my uncle who was a great coward and who trembled at the very mention of the spirit of Darkness when the village Elder saw me he Unleashed a storm of Angry Words I confess I was frightened believing that the spirit of Darkness would be angry and bring disaster down upon my head and yet I found myself writing a word in the Earth first word I ever wrote to myself I said I will return to see The Stranger for I would learn more of words and their meanings Spirit of Darkness was forgotten in my mind now that I had seen a ray of light oh the next day I returned to find the stranger he no longer taught my people the magic of words for they were so frightened of the village Elder and his threats that all avoided him I felt so sure of myself so filled with pride it did not matter to me that we could be seen [Music] David and he told me he was a Christian [Music] he read from a book a book called The Bible and the words were in our tongue so that I could understand their meaning he read of what Jesus said about Pride and I found the word strange and even troubling [Music] all the while there were Eyes Upon me Angry Eyes [Music] in a matter of hours the Spirit of Darkness answered my insolence [Music] found me at the water hole and cried out frantically the rice storage on fire hurry hurry all was lost I knew it from the moment I reached the storage compound but I struggled to save at least some of the precious rice foreign [Music] that I had angered him and brought my fate upon myself thereafter my world grew dark and trouble like the rain fell constantly upon me my wealth was gone my friends abandoned me [Music] very sick and even the scale and tenderness of my oldest sister could do nothing to restore his strength the villagers stayed at a distance feeling sure that punabaya's sickness had been brought upon him by my wickedness believing that the spirit was punishing me by afflicting the one I loved most in the world I felt I had to do something to help my brother perhaps I could appease the angry Spirit perhaps it was not too late if I humbled myself my pride was gone now there was only fear in my heart fear for panabaya's life [Music] as I went to see the one who could help me I heard David call that I walked on convinced that David had been the cause of my downfall [Music] The Village Elder spoke angrily told me that the spirit of Darkness had been infuriated by my insolence and that because of me the whole village might bear his curse as I listened I could think only upon Abeer then the old man told me there was but one hope for fun a bear's life at his insistence I went to see the old woman who lived alone at the edge of the village it was said that the spirit of Darkness lived within her and that she alone could brew a medicine that might quiet his anger was it the blood of an animal she poured what was the meaning of her strange chant [Music] feel the spirit of Darkness hovering about us I could feel him looking into my heart weighing my fate holding panabaya's life in his hands I stood in Terror of this woman afraid to remain afraid to move [Music] a few days later in desperation I went to find David the old woman's medicine had been useless whenever was dying and David was my last hope perhaps his Christian God was stronger than the spirit of Darkness [Music] he spoke kindly to me told me that at a place called the mission all men who were sick or troubled could find help he said this place is four days walk from the village crushed how could I alone take penavea such a distance through the bush David called out don't despair I will go with you I couldn't understand why he should be willing to suffer for me that David said I am a Christian and I will help [Music] next morning carrying penavea in a hammock we left for the Mission Station [Music] thank you by noon of the first day I was hot and tired and my throat was burning with thirst after I had drunk I looked over and saw that David was giving water to Puna Baya before drinking himself before I there was such strength and goodness in it I was learning many things by his example the next day we struggled on our bodies aching the sun beating upon us and tormented by panabaya's feverish cries [Music] by evening of the third day we were exhausted and stopped to rest at an abandoned Rice Hut my body and my spirit were broken and when I looked at punavea I knew that he could not live long everything seemed futile everything in the world sensing my despair David began to talk he spoke quietly and his words were strong with faith he told me that God had made the world and you of all things in it and that God was good and as he spoke he opened my eyes my heart to the goodness and the beauty of the world David spoke of this Jesus who lived in the book who lived at the mission where the sick and troubled found help and as I listened a feeling of Peace Came Upon me I found myself again found new strength in my limbs New Hope in my heart the next day we struggled painfully on and by afternoon finally reached the Mission Station I have never seen a place like it but David knew where to go for he had lived here as a Young Man he led me to a place he called the hospital a missionary woman looked at panabella David had spoken of her she was a nurse and the doctor's wife she sent a man to bring the Doctor Who was treating someone at the mission sawmill [Music] foreign [Music] I'd never seen such a tall man and one who seemed so sure and strong looking at him kneel over panabaya quieted my fear thereafter I remained at the mission and went to school while cornabella was in the hospital I made many friends in this atmosphere of freedom and fellowship I was happier than I'd ever been before it seemed to me that nowhere else was there so much seriousness of thought and yet so much pure laughter in such a place as this one could no longer believe that the spirit of darkness really existed [Music] my eagerness to learn had impressed my teachers it gratified me when they said I was a fine student yes I discovered a new person a better one than I have known three months after I came to the Mission Station I heard one of my teachers call to me there was something strange in her voice it was Puna Baya he had been released from the hospital he was well again [Music] as I ran I thanked the god of these Christians when a Bayer lived he was the same as always same Bright Eyes same cheerful smile [Music] everyone felt glad at the sight of him [Music] but let him go for fear that this reunion might be a dream for indeed I had dreamed of nothing else by the end of my first year at the Mission Station I had discovered myself in the eyes of God I had felt myself growing in the nurture and admonition of the Lord as I studied the Bible as I lived in fellowship with the students and missionaries as my mind and spirit were opened through education and religious experience [Music] foreign [Music] slowly over the last 12 months I had felt myself moving closer and closer to the decision that would change my life [Music] memorable Sunday morning I knelt solemnly with my fellows at the altar to dedicate myself in the service of the Lord at this great moment in the presence of ponabaya and my friends I thank God that he had found me I prayed that I might be a true follower of Christ at that time I did not know what this dedication would mean but one day in a distant place I learned when I had finished my schooling at the Mission Station I went with the help of a scholarship to the Booker T Washington Institute here I received training for two years so that my hands would have mechanical skill so that I could one day contribute to the building of a new Africa a modern Africa free of want and fear an Africa built with skill and vision on a Christian Foundation later I went to Monrovia coastal city and capital of Librium [Music] here I attended the College of West Africa twelve years have passed since I first saw the mission and I had changed what would I have thought back in the village if I could have seen myself now in this great City a college student and even at this moment on my way to keep a very important appointment the secretary of state had invited three of us seniors at the college to confer with him at his office [Music] foreign [Music] he told us that we had been selected as the outstanding students at our institution and that the government was prepared to offer us careers upon graduation he said that this would be a rare opportunity for each of us to serve the country and to make important names for ourselves I knew this was a great opportunity and I was excited with the prospect of the future but even as he described the importance of the positions reserved for us I saw something on his desk something that turned my thoughts from a vision of the future inward upon myself yes my thoughts turned inward and when the conference was over I went to the beach near Monrovia a favorite place of mine for meditation [Music] though I had been here many times the sight of the sea still moved me as no other sight I knew somehow it made God seem nearer [Music] I could hear the wind in the Palms and it was like the call of the land a voice out of the past reminding me of my people who yet live in darkness who live in need of me even as I had needed David I remembered the prayer I said at my dedication my promise to the Lord would I follow a career in the government or return to my people to serve them as a Christian once served me I made my decision [Music] and we passed the offering plate and uh get whatever Church Methodist Church to hopefully commit some of their funds to missionary work in that part of the country that is what this film was made for to talk about the glory of uh Christian Missionary work in taming Savages uh getting them turn away from their uh [Music] Savage religions in in Voodoo beliefs and adopting the Western view of religion and of how to live and because we're so good at it here we're so good at doing religion and living a life of modern convenience um anyways yeah it's I don't endorse obviously that film but it is an interesting little look to the that time period and for some reason the sophomore on a scanner crapped out so I they do anyways uh thanks for tuning in today uh someone gave me twenty dollars and it went away before I could see who did it so thank you to whoever that person was they did it via the
