e e e is is is hi everybody I'm skip alimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16mm films and uh deal with a very soggy wet uh outside um which means that the basement here at the archive has water in it um and that is something that we'll be working on to mitigate there's nothing in the basement right now so thankfully that's not a problem except that you know you don't want water standing in your basement uh so we just watched some more of the coret uh stock can reels that was stock can it was a couple of them Au Au auo we combine them together and uh scan them um so yeah there's some classic b-roll that was used all right so behind me I have a a film set up on the scanner and this was actually this just showed up um and the person who sent it I'm right here but I have to look up who sent it um wow having problems with technology today Jeff Watson thankfully Jeff Watson he sent us a big box of films so thank you Jeff this is uh one of them so let let's enjoy if the technology works because I am now dealing with three different technology issues but supposedly we're going to watch safety on the city streets enjoy for oh [Music] some streets are very busy some streets are quiet some streets are straight some are curved some streets are wide some are narrow all streets are dangerous all streets have safety rules these signs are safety rules for cars cars need safety rules children need safety rules too wait a minute [Music] don't for you make sure that David keeps his code button David will come straight home from school yes Mother May Linda come home with me after school yes car just a minute remember your safety rues one be careful two R time three look four listen and be alert right and five think I always think think before you do anything be careful read signs look listen and be alert think David forgot to read the signs some safety signs have no words a red light means SC do not cross the streets yellow means weight the light is changing a green light means gold the children still look both ways before Crossing safety rules stop accidents before they happen Carol aren't you coming home with us I'm waiting for Linda I'll walk home with her see you later school do made go go that hey that's good how does it work don't teare it w you will P my safety room go [Music] go David forgot a safety rule always look where you go remember safety rules every day Carol has a surprise to show Linda Linda you'll never guess what I have look all that's f Carol forgot a safety rule always be careful even when the light is green [Music] stop stop you know you almost got hurt I thought I forgot that car almost hit me Paul forgot the safety rule think always think before you do anything I never forget don't be so smart bump a sudden start you fall off I'll see you later bye David forgot a safety rule always listen and be alert for warnings [Music] practice safety every day safety is for everybody autos and bicycles have the same safety rules always keep to the right single file look both ways at Crossroads obey all traffic signs arm down is a signal for stop arm up is a signal for a right turn arm straight is a signal for left turns it looks like the boys have learned their safety lesson uhoh Paul forgot [Music] one hey look at me no hand are you Hur you better go home and get that fixed up what happened let me see I gu the first day kids I'll need cotton antiseptic and Band-Aids after this you keep both hands on the handlebars come on look what I found what happened to you wow what a mess I was reading safety signs and first I found a danger sign e [Music] wow that organ music was great I was not expecting that uh the rest of the films in that series do not have an awesome organ music soundtrack or intro or outro uh and that one had some you know so the the idea and why this film exists is that this is to help teach uh kids who are hearing impaired to and adults probably um how to read lips and so the pacing of it is very slow so and everything is it just feels weird um which is why I like it one one of the reasons two uh this is also trying to teach Concepts and then this they're actually teaching safety Concepts and other ones that I have they're more about exploring something so there's one about a Halloween party uh and and there's others that are that are like that and I have shown ones that came from uh USC University of Southern California uh which had no uh captions and it was also slow and the idea was it was teaching these kind of Life events uh giving context uh so that kids could lip read so that one was great especially the kid getting paint on him on himself on the end it's really awesome well uh it's raining so let's learn about uh living things in a drop of water [Music] the eye is a marvelous instrument a window through which we explore the world but there is a great deal that the eye cannot see we have invented instruments which Aid our eyes as we explore the world around us powerful telescopes and cameras can see into the far reaches of space revealing the wonders of the universe microscopes coupled to cameras allow our eyes to see and record Another Universe the realm of the very small a universe of very tiny living things photography permits us to speed up or slow down the world around us so events which may take hours seem to happen in just a few seconds and events which happen too fast for us to see with our eyes can be slowed down by slowing down or speeding up everyday events we can learn how they take place we can better understand the world in which we live even with its limitations the eye reveals much about our world we can see many different life forms in the animal world alone a great variety of creatures of many sizes and shapes rhinoceros huge lumbering Beasts of the African grasslands Ducks not very large at all but found almost everywhere on Earth zebras with their uniquely striped patterns of hair elephants the largest animals found on land giraffes the tallest and among the most graceful creatures on our planet whales the mysterious Giants of the Earth's oceans share their home with small organisms Plankton one of the most important parts of the food chain in water both fresh and salt we can discover a remarkable Universe of living things on a journey of exploration in a freshwater Pond we can find a variety of life forms from freshwater plants to fish but what else is there let's take a closer look at a sample of pond water using a magnifying glass to help our eyes we can see thousands of tiny specks they are called protests one celled organisms here we compare the protests the white specs in the water to the size of the eye of a needle this journey of exploration begins with the aid of a microscope a slide has been placed under the microscope containing a drop of water alive with protests a needle is placed on the slide you can see that even the largest protests move easily through the eye of the needle to us this is a very tiny space to a protest it is vast protests are so small that a single small drop of water may contain thousands yet these incredibly small organisms much smaller than the eye of a needle and consisting of only a single cell perform all of the basic life functions as the larger plants and animals do protests differ from each other in many ways size and shape are easy differences to see but in those protests that move the type of structures used for movement are important in identifying them blepharisma moves by means of tiny hairlike structures called cyia scientists call this kind of protest ayate parium is a common ciliate the cyia are extremely small and hairlike lined up in rows like the ores of a boat and are used to move the organism around some protests have a long whip-like structure called a flagellum in this case the tip vibrates rapidly moving the organism as you might expect these protests are called flagellates amiba are very common protests that appear to move by changing their shape and flowing in the direction they want to go the extensions of their body are structures called pseudopods or false feet as it moves the amoeba is always ready to capture food all protests like plants or animals either make their own food or feed on others watch what happens to this smaller protest that swims in between two of the Amoeba's false feet the amoeba slowly flows around to enclose it and forms a structure called a food vacu where it is digested a type of amoeba called difflugia has a hard shell to protect it and only the false feet extend out of the shell as difflugia moves about another specialized structure in some of the protests called a contractile vacu serves an important function excess water entering the protest is collected in the vacu and is pushed out through a tiny pore in the cell which forms when the vacu contracts protests like other cells have a nucleus and in some cases more than one the nucleus contains the chromatin special types of molecules that are passed when the cell divides protests reproduce in a number of ways most cells just divide to form two While others reproduce sexually conjugation is a special type of sexual reproduction in cell division a single protest divides to become two eventually the two new protests will reproduce and so on some form large colonies or groups of cells through photosynthesis just like the Trees of the forest and the grasses of the Prairies volvox uses the energy of the Sun in the production ction of its own food from nutrients in the water datom are a unique kind of protest microscopic golden Jewels with unique body forms living in both fresh and salt water after they die their hard skeletons sink to the sea floor or are washed up on beaches where we can collect them for study they may also be buried and under great pressure form dious Earth which is used to filter impurities out of water and other liquids some protests have very close relationships with other kinds of protests this is parium berseria living within it are other smaller protests called chlorella which carry on photosynthesis and give the parami its green color the partnership benefits both protests one receiving nutrients while the other has a nice place to stay when parium berseria dies it bursts the chlorella green with chlorophyll are released and their forms are clearly seen with the aid of the microscope and Camera we have seen the many shapes sizes and colors of protests as as well as the way they move their numbers in a single drop of water were more than we could count can you imagine how many there must be in a pond although most protests live freely in water some live within other organisms the soil that covers the continents of our planet is the home of many life forms including earthworms which in turn are home for protests these organisms live in the reprod productive parts of the earthworm the protest does no harm to the worm and has a safe place to live cows are common place in our world the source of important foods for humans meat and milk cows eat grass but they cannot completely digest it without help once again protests are hard at work protests living in the cow's stomach help produce digestive chemicals which break down grass fibers without these organisms cows one of our major protein sources could not survive not all protests are beneficial to humans and to other organisms one of the most deadly is a tiny flagellate called tripanis found in the bloodstream it causes diseases which afflict millions of people in Africa and South America perhaps one day scientists will discover cures for the terrible diseases brought on by these tiny organisms although brief our journey with the aid of the microscope has taken us into a world unknown to our eyes the world of the protests an important part of the Great Web of Life on our planet t [Music] I think that would have been better with a ricking organ soundtrack but it was still pretty great U and it was it is it just me or have I always thought that that kingdom was called protest and not protest that's what I was taught in biology high school biology but you know maybe I was wrong it's encyclopedia branic like they kind of research that stuff so all right so I have another film behind me behind me uh and I couldn't find anything about this it's the title is right here says Journey to the Center of the US discontinued and I I looked up the title uh in some of my databases and I couldn't find it so let's watch it and find out what this is all about enjoy this is Mark Hatfield governor of the state of Oregon I have been asked here we are on the Pacific coast we have just finished celebrating our 100th year as a state symbolizing the farthest reach of our nation the very word Oregon evokes images of Western movement Frontier Lands End now it seemed produce is entitled Journey to the Center of the United States referring to the new center which has been scientifically located in the northeast corner of Oregon when Alaska and Hawaii joined the union the old geographic center was shifted to the Northwest we are very happy to have the center of the 50 United States within our boundaries and it should give us all A New Perspective on our growing Nation but I am not sure it adds anything to the image of Oregon as the frontier as the land of the West the people of Northeast Oregon must have had the same feeling for their Journey to the Center of the US pokes some good-natured fun at journeying to the center of things you might even see some semblance to Jules Vern's Journey to the Center of the Earth they are both unlikely stories after you get to our Center however you will see what the land is really like this will Amaze you even more than any fantasy I know you will enjoy making this journey be prepared to have [Music] fun four counties make up the northeast corner of Oregon it is a land of many faces a land of many Traditions one of them is Cowboys it is here that the real West Begins it is where it begins if you view it from the shores of the Pacific if you're in Portland you have to go East to get into the West into the west of Wide Open Spaces cow ponies tall mountains short horns white faces everywhere you go you'll find cattle spreads and Wranglers at work the Mexican fence pliers have replaced the six gun the Jeep stands in for the horse but not always you'll still find them sitting tall and Easy in the saddle day in day out summer and winter this is the land of the working Cowboy as real as the land he is a part of real as the Traditions behind him the towns many of them got their start as Cow Town towns they grew up as cow towns and they're still cow towns sometimes the cows take over the [Music] town now don't get me wrong not everyone around here is a cowboy there are even some who don't like the critters well this is the beauty of Northeast Oregon out here there are ways and places to get away from it all way away you can set yourself up a camp in Hell's Canyon and there will be no noise to disturb you except the fish chewing on your [Music] hooks hooking into a fighter like this is good for the soul in the High Country there is hunting in the rolling country there are [Music] birds the land has much to offer for those who want to get out into it when winter comes the whole landscape changes the air seems even clearer and cleaner and the snow is awfully inviting inviting to the whole family and within easy access by Family Car are the Anthony Lakes and tolgate ski areas where you'll find skiing as it should be in fact the family car is the key to many forms of pleasure in Northeast Oregon each turn in the road presents a new Vista a New Horizon there are over a dozen state parks and Wayside stops each one is cool and green with plenty of space to pitch a camp and live the leisurely Rhythm of the land you can live off the land too there are fish in the Stream and homegrown watermelons for old-fashioned family picnics each Road each park has a quality of its own has its own form of fun the back roads have a quality too they beckon the curious and adventurous the land has many stories to tell it can tell of the old stump Dodger The Narrow Gauge line between Baker and Sumpter mile upon mile of gravel on the valley floor contains a story too it tells of this monster which chewed the valley up and spewed out 30 $30 million worth of gold for you're in Gold Country now and the roads lead to abandoned mines and ghost towns or the near ghost towns where there is still a faint glimmer of Life there is still gold in this country as the old-timers say more in the Hills than ever's been taken out most of it is sought by the weekend minor who plays the game for the quest not the Dust the rules and tools are still the same pler slle box shovel and the old standby the pan if you stand too close to them you're liable to get bitten by the same bug [Music] might even strike it rich meanwhile back at the ranch there are some vars on their way to head them off at the pass they plan to Ho up at the baram Red's place Boulder Park Arrowhead or any one of the many guest ranches in the area these are the spots to let time catch up with you to soak up some sun to give free rain to the kids let them find out what cowboy is with the seat of their pants rather than their eyeballs there are horses for all of [Music] them gentle horses and gentle slopes pretty soon the whole family will be in the saddle taking the measure of the land above all this is Rodeo country rodeo at its best world famous Rodeo the Pendleton Roundup and the small rodeos at Elgen Baker Union halfway and the Chief Joseph days all have that real Western flavor that can't be imitated or staged it seems like every Critter that gets into the arena just doesn't want to be ridden Rodeo is many things its pageantry it's spectacle it's tradition Rodeo is a sport the third largest attended in the nation afficianados know that that was a hoolahan a first time Rodeo fan can tell you that was a Miss Brahma Bulls they're from India but the writer is strict American some might be reminded of a Sunday afternoon in a Spanish Arena but not for long Rodeo is a contest a contest of skill a contest of time a contest of muscles it's a way of proving the Axiom the bigger they are the harder they fall sometimes it's kind of hard to prove Rodeo has its roots in the working Ranch roping dogies is part of the scheme of things out here people who live on ranches learn to do this learn to train their own horse same horse same girl now she is Queen of the Roundup because Roundup Springs from a community out in the real West four counties make up the northeast corner of Oregon it is a land of many faces a land of many Traditions one of them is Indians Indians are there they in person in all their regalia and Splendor they are there in subtler ways too like in the names on the land yumaa WWA imaha Looking Glass Joseph wild horses in The Meadows and Hills speak of Indians too in their veins run the strains of the appolo the caus these were the ponies of the NES Pur the ones that took them across the shining mountains into Buffalo country thousands of Indians and horses would rendevu in the old Oregon Country it was a sight to behold today they still rondevo in the Oregon Country in the state of Oregon in its northeast corner they are there on horses in their traditional costumes they are there as a living memory a memory of a way of life that is not forgotten that can be shared by all key to this way of life is a love of the land a belief that spirit dwell in the mountains a belief that these Spirits can be sought out in a personal Quest that they can be made friendly and protective Spirits dwell in The Lakes too anyone who crosses their remote beauty is following an Indian Path this is the Indian way it matters not if the face is pale the canoe a surplus raft fishing is Indian business and there is a little bit of Indian in all of us Northeast Oregon is a land in which it can grow the woods are full of spirits the woods are full of game they beon to those who will quest for them they will lead them into the High Country into the mountains it is a good Quest there is an old Indian saying one shot meat Two Shots maybe two shots two dear keep good there are many ways to note the passage of time by a calendar or by the color of the land the tingle of the air or by what birds are on the Wind hunting is Indian business and there is a little bit of Indian in all of us something that lets us find beauty in the land find pleasure in its Rhythm the rhythm of the land presents an everchanging picture with winter the land if possible is even more beautiful the High Country beckons only the few indeed there are few Indians who would answer this call but there is a little bit of Hillary and tensing in all of us enough to let us know what it feels like to be on the top of the world many of us know the pleasures of a downhill run like this the feel of dry powder snow and if winter comes can spring be far away can the snow on the mountains withstand the bursting of the blossoms the warm breath of the shanuk that turns the hills green again now the signs point the way to another top of the world for the little bit of Hillary and tensing in all of us Hat Point is accessible by car it is a prodigious drive there are no easy paths to a top of a world this one is unique for from here you can look into the bottom of the world too you can look into Hell's Canyon the deepest most fabulous canyon in the world a canyon of mystery inscribed with markings From A Distant past echoing with distant sounds which today are the sounds of outboard motors a family boat has conquered one of the most feared rivers in the world completely conquered it made it Sunday outing safe picnics are great but here are the boats and here's the river and now let's have some fun [Music] there are other new sounds on the river there are other ways to tame the Wild and turbulent snake it is being quieted at Oxbow and at brown Le and behind the dams are the reservoirs mile upon mile of placid River beckoning the water skier the fisherman The Tourist and where you ask in this contemporary scene are the Indians they're here keeping up with it all taking it all in their stride in fact maybe a little bit ahead of some of us Northeast Oregon is a land of many faces new shapes appear in ancient riverbeds new names on the map McNary dam is one but the old landmarks endure hat Rock still looks like a hat but there is a yacht club here where there was only sand and Driftwood before the tradition of friendship runs deep out here the natives be they Cowboy or Indian are friendly and helpful it's hard hard to get lost in this country northeast Oregon is indeed of many faces you can buy a railroad ticket from LR to Enterprise this ticket will entitle you to ride in the Caboose of a freight train here is another route to adventure in Northeast Oregon it isn't exactly the accommodations of the Dome liner but the view is just as good in fact it's a little better because of the leisureliness of the pace you will follow the grand Rond river which was General Howard's route of March on the nees purse his march on Joseph and looking glass the schedule reads leave L Grand 900 a.m. arrive Enterprise 1 p.m. it is now 5:00 p.m. the conductor expects to be an Enterprise about 11: p.m. tonight if schedules are important this isn't the trip for you but if you like the unusual if you like good companionship buy a ticket to Enterprise here's the way to see the country here's the way to see Northeast Oregon a way to get on top of it and see it all in one big look in 45 minutes charter pilots in light planes can take you anytime any place you want to go in Northeast Oregon this is a pretty remarkable feat Northeast Oregon is larger than the country of Belgium just a bit smaller than Switzerland the wwas have been called the Switzerland of America and from the air you can see why and if you wish your pilot can set you down in a remote Landing Strip hidden in a valley set you down at a Guest Ranch which is accessible only by airplane or by packhorse by air you are 5 minutes away from the center of the United States no electricity here no television but this rugged Elegance contains the essence of America and its Frontier as symbolized by Reds Levis and stepson and by the wings that brought you here back on Earth again most roads lead to the center of the United States lead to Northeast Oregon whether you come from the east or the west north or south 395 is the north south route us3 or ADN is the East West Route but no matter what road you take you will be following the Oregon Trail the trail of Adventure the trail of Discovery you have seen the center you have seen the land you know how to get there I now would like to cordially invite you to make your own personal Journey to the Center of the United States then visit the rest of Oregon you may never want to leave well there you go I would have never guessed based on that title that that would have been a film about Oregon and um maybe that's where they're they're being fantas full of because none of us were like Oregon how's that work it's like oh right Hawaii in Alaska right um okay yeah um in spite of them not knowing how to spell vacation land uh I think it was uh it was okay you know it was a little dry but it was you know trying to encourage tourism and uh yeah I mean it's beautiful Oregon is beautiful so so thumbs up uh thanks everybody for tuning in today uh tomorrow
