hi everybody this is Skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show I'm not at the archive today I'm actually pre-recording the show because we are going to be traveling trying to beat uh tropical storm Debbie as we make our way to New York City um where I'll be doing a show on Friday uh when puppets go bad Anthology film archives if you're in town come on by it'd be great to see you in person uh today um I'm going be showing some stuff that I've shown in the past but all at one time and what I mean about that is I'm going to show you all the films that I have in a series that Encyclopedia Britannica made in the late 60s called magic moments and um I think we're going to be watching how many films from that series 20 uh they're all short uh they uh most of them don't have any type of um narration it's all uh basically just kids doing stuff or adults doing things and they were all designed to inspire to be provocative and to inspire discussion and to get little kids excited about whatever they watch so that they would follow up with writing a story with a class or drawing a picture or relaying similar experiences um so it's we're watching bang choosing up clap fantasy of feet follow me getting along getting even guessing game hands grow up holding on uh join hands let's go lside land Magic Hands Magic Sneakers matching up me too toes tell what if what's happening and whose shoes so 20 different little short things and then after that we're going to watch uh this amazing film by uh I believe it's Porter films called Holiday from Rules which is almost like a 1950s take on Lord of the Flies with little kids um which is pretty great uh they did another film called Helping Johnny remember which is equally as great it's like they're in this weird space where there's it's black behind them so they're almost like in a Purgatory um so anyways um enjoy the Magic Moment series and holidays from rules and uh yeah just enjoy [Music] [Music] o what [Music] school grounds without permission rules all the time rules I'm sick of them you oh I just wish there were no rules yeah then you could do anything you wanted to nobody could tell you what to do excuse me for maybe you would like to find out just what it would be like if there were no rules yeah but how could we do that by going someplace where there are no rules you'd have to go someplace where there are no teachers or policemen or or anybody there's no such place you're right anywhere you goes how by using our imagination let's all guard and pretend we're in a far away place a place no people have discovered yet now where could that be maybe at the North Pole no people have been there anyway it's too cold there to be any fun maybe an island somewhere in the middle of the ocean all right a make believe Island now let's all pretend real hard and here we are the first people to ever be on this island because well let's say this island is surrounded by man-eating sharks okay there are no rules here you can do anything you wish what do we do let's explore okay let's go let's go this way all right let's go over that there's nothing to do around here hey let's play F the leader leader I'm leader I said so first come [Music] on you missed Jim go to the end of the line who says so that's the way you play it's a a rule Penny well I guess so but we have no rules so it doesn't matter if Jim follows the leader or not oh let's play some other games well will maybe rules our so important how about I see you're last you're it I don't want to be it okay Eeny Meeny mo catch a tiger by the toe if he wor let him go oh you t spells out sh you're Ste it je but I don't want to be here but you got to no she doesn't because that's a rule then who's going to be here okay I'll be it here's home 1 2 3 4 6 8 10 here I come ready or [Music] not 1 2 3 that isn't fair you can't hold me so I can't reach home why not there's no says I can't then there's no who said you caught me either one two three Penny 1 two three gy you didn't see us I don't have to we don't have any rules fo it's no fun plan if everybody just does what they want to isn't there any game we can play that doesn't have any rules all games have rules without rules there would be no games oh what beautiful seash shell I'm going to string some together and make a neckace me too are there enough I don't know there aren't too many hey come here I found a mous that's not a m that's a hamster oh isn't he cute it's for his real sauce let me hold him no let me no me no go find your own mou he's being selfish true but there's no rule that he should share yeah that's right but there's no rule says I can't take him [Applause] [Music] either look up your heard he's M now see what you did he's gone you tore my dress him you better fix it a don't be silly hey hey leave mine sh alone these are mine yours got broken that's not so you're just taking all the good ones and leaving me the broken one well there's only enough left for one NE that's Ste give them back I can't have them you can't [Applause] either now see what you did they're all broken well it's your fault you tried to take mine jeez that was silly wasn't it they wasted all their shells now nobody can have a necklace yes but that's what happens when there are no rules about taking or wasting things look what are those round things coconuts let's climb up and get them not me that's too high bet you couldn't climb up there either that I [Laughter] C he'd better be careful or he'll fall and get hurt let him there's no rule says he can't kill himself if he wants to G Jim what Jim are you all right oh my arm it feels like it's broken Jee maybe you should go to the doctor what doctor there isn't any here couldn't we have a doctor a doctor would only make rules like keep your arm bandaged until it gets well sorry no rules no doctors what do we do hey what do you think you're doing planers you try to fix your arms what do you know about it nothing but somebody's got to do something lay this is no fun I'm going swimming [Laughter] hey stupid don't you remember there are sharks in the water oh I forgot nobody goes swimming see isn't that a rule Mark no that's just common sense so are other safety rules what's the difference between not going in the water where sharks might bite you and not running out in the street where cars might hit you oh okay let her go ahead if she wants to boy I'm hungry me I'm to what do we do about eating here well there are no parents here to make rules like you must be home for dinner by six so I guess it's up to you hey Jim didn't you knock done a coconut when you fell I think so but I don't remember here it [Music] is how do you get it open here give me like this get out of my way give me some give me some come on give me some isn't it fun to have a nice meal with your friends with no rules nobody to say you have to wash up or be courteous or use good manners in fact I don't believe we've heard anyone say please or thank you since we've been on this island well boys and girls how do you like living without rules I hate it this is no fun it stins well what can be done about it guess if we're going to have any fun we'd better make some rules we'll have to we sure do Bo we need them what kinds of rules do you need rules that make things fair for everybody and safety rules to keep us from getting hurt we should make a rule that sharks can't fight us then we could all go swimming and you can be the one to tell the Sharks about it I'm afraid that wouldn't be a good rule Penny rules only work when those they are meant for understand them and know why they should be obeyed oh well how about courtesy rules so we'll be nice to each other and health rules like keeping clean so we won't be sick yeah we need lots of rules so let's get going and make some hey instead of making up a lot of rules why don't we go home where we already have them all right since we only pretended we were here all we have to do is UN pretend and we're back where we started now we have rules again do you think you can be happy about rules now sure as long as we remember that rules are to make things better for everybody yeah and if you don't understand a rule find out why the rule is made if you really know why then it will probably make sense so that was intense I know lots of little kids uh doing stuff interacting uh misbehaving Etc I did a show uh or wasn't even a show it was an art inst installation where I took all the magic moments films that I had and made little Clips little tiny clips of each one and they would randomly play and I called it uh random acts of kidness and I did it it was an installation in New York City at a gallery and then I did it in in Raleigh at a gallery here and uh I never got anybody I never saw either I wasn't at the opening in New York City and I wasn't and it was a street installation in Raleigh so I haven't never had a sense of what people thought of it so I I liked it but it was a lot of work um anyways thanks for watching today uh tomorrow will probably be pre-recorded as well uh we'll still be traveling but um I think
