services in one of the more than 200 occupations Allied to this field to work in the health services you must like people and care about them the very life of men women and children depends upon the learning and competence of many in the health services upon their alertness and concern for mankind but regardless of what your work may be in the health services you will share in the real satisfactions in the never-ending struggle to preserve life and improve the well-being of all of us many of you can prepare for a variety of positions in Health Services while in high school School some require training after graduation from high school still others require a from a community college or a bachelor's degree after 4 years of study those who go on to become Physicians or specialists in some areas such as research pathology or Radiology may spend 10 years or more in intense training and study the settings in which you may work are just as varied from mobile units to large Hospital centers from small private practice offices to government facilities the variety of work locations is endless while some positions may be available in one of those exotic settings you've read about in National Geographic magazine many will be found in urban areas some in neighborhood medical and mental health centers of every description are everywhere in some areas you'll find them located in high-rise Office Buildings in others in storefront offices in the inner city nursing homes located in most communities as well as facilities for the handicapped and mentally and emotionally disturbed need Personnel research programs require trained people in a variety of skills new programs are initiated every day exciting new programs have also been taken over by Health departments one of them is environmental health progress in health comes through teaching passing information gained along to others educational Specialists are need to instruct others in the techniques as more and more jobs of every description become available to young people in hospitals from small institutions with less than 25 beds to those with over a thousand the visible service is given would not be possible without the multitude of behind the scenes [Music] people industry also employs many people in the Health Service occupations many companies have their own Physicians and nurses to provide physical examinations and other services offered workers they are also on hand in cases of on the site emergency trained Specialists are needed to help the disabled learn new skills so they can be productive members of the world of work health related research no longer limited to the test tube and the microscope must rely on the latest technology nuclear medicine and electronic diagnostic equipment machines often bypass malfunctioning organs in the human body people are needed to maintain and repair them now which jobs in the health services are short of workers most and most need young people too positions are open in a wide variety of areas in [Music] dentistry in the laboratory in Food [Music] Service in rehabilitation services in the field of Pharmacy including the manufacture of drugs and medications pharmaceutical firms employ hundreds of Specialists and technicians many offer on the job training in nursing clinical Specialists registered nurses practical nurses and AIDS are in demand male as well as female Specialists are needed in the nursing Services openings exist in every area of housekeeping and maintenance in Hospitals and Clinics as well as private practice many specialists are also needed to combat air pollution water pollution and improper Solid Waste Disposal people are needed to work as receptionists administrators and office workers to process medical records and see that patients receive benefits they're entitled [Music] to name it and there's a specialty looking for qualified help and regardless of where you work you will discover you are a respected member of the community people appreciate your efforts and know you're trying to make life better how can you advance once you've got a starting job in the health services in some instances the cost of the additional training undertaken outside your place of employment will be paid by your employer but not always training continues until you become competent in a chosen field the armed services offer many specialized courses which enable many to return to civilian life and rewarding careers in the health services what about salaries those those who are best paid in the health services earn salaries as good or better and Technical people of equivalent education receed in business and industry others in the health services are paid salaries which are competitive for similar work elsewhere opportunities are more numerous for those on the ball who want to get ahead need for health workers is so great that you can select almost any part of the country or the world as a work area if you think you might be interested in a job in the health services in any one of 200 different occupations take this quiz see if you've got what it takes simply answer yes or no to each question do you like to work with people team up with people help people do you enjoy doing things with your hands operating equipment machines are you the kind of person who's willing to do a job as often as necessary until you're sure it's done right do you like to learn new things on your own to constantly improve your sphere of [Music] knowledge is doing meaningful work important to you is the satisfaction you may personally achieve as important as a good paycheck have you the patience for exacting work can you work by yourself when necessary and yet again work as part of a group are really is our quiz is over if you answered yes to most of the questions a career in the health services may work for you so think about it but whether or not this seems to be a career area for you go on to examine careers in the many other areas of the world of work as you are examining careers in the health services now there are other careers for which you will be suited better suited possibly then if you really think a health services career is for you work on it right away discuss it further with your teacher or guidance counselor get all the information you can check in at your local US employment service office too talk things over with a youth service counselor talk things over with your mother and father and close friends or out in the health field then if you're a choice hands up in the face of all the considerations they may offer you're on your way plan to get the most you can out of your school subjects which could be of help to you in the health services keep in mind there are many technical schools Junior and community colleges as well as accredited universities which will help you prepare for a Health [Music] occupation your guidance counselor can tell you which vocational schools and other educ educational institutions are qualified to give the courses your guidance counselor is a good source for information on how you can apply for financial assistance you like thousands of others can do interesting work rewarding work responsible work work in the service of the hurt the ill and the disturb among your fellow men [Music] what you going to do when the time comes and you have to earn your way what you going to do every time and you have to learn your p what will you do when you're fin on your what will you really do what will you really do well so I'm totally bummed that YouTube interrupted that stream um one because it's very jarring two that film is awesome so it starts off with that um boy wakes up after the Rapture or after a zombie attack kind of like uh 28 Days Later um and then he just this kid just goes and tries all he drives a street car drive he drives all this other stuff ends up at an airport and he flies an airplane and leaves the Earth or orbit and is heading towards the moon it's nuts it's so good so frustrating uh and that's the thing about European stuff like that seems to get us into more trouble than that as far as interrupting streams than anything else um is foreign stuff and it's in a weird realm like some of this stuff uh originally when it was created if it wasn't registered in the United States for copyright than it was in public domain which is why there were a lot of films a lot of Italian horror a lot of uh kung fu movies that made their way over here uh and were shown on television because it was inexpensive or free and you know some disreputable Distributors would just take a print they would dub over their own thing and release it in the United States uh that all changed during the burn convention and then it was uh some copyrights were restored to some works but um but yeah so now there's this weird thing where I would have to do research and I would have to do extra research to look into the documentation to see if it had been restored but it doesn't matter YouTube doesn't matter because YouTube is an international thing and if somebody submits it and says this is our work then if they run across it with her Content ID robots they'll they'll stop it or they'll flag it or do whatever and there's been many times that's been erroneous uh this one I have no idea but um everything that you will see in this film happened on the day of the county fair it's just as you would have seen it on that summer day if you had been there yourself and in the city inbound traffic is this is your early morning farm show with all of the day's Farm news Across the Nation and right here in our own County and right now the 600 a.m. temperature 67° in Dairyland let's get the show on this year the 4 Club has reported more junior cap applicants than ever before and we're real happy to hear about that County tractor dealers will be on hand representing all of the major tractor companies for those racehorse fans you will witness some of the finest trotting races ever assembled at the old Fairground good morning gang morning morning Grand you want to start Sho why sure today's the day you boy we're going down to the fair oh you want some coffee now or wait till wait till that gets in I'm going spook house this year spook house yeah you think you got enough courage if he takes pan along [Music] oh I bet he'll want somebody to hold his hand no how many years you been going to the fair Grandpa well I'd say around 48 50 years morning morning guess what Fair's coming how about to day tomorrow yeah I'm going to try and win one of them great big dogs it only takes one or two balls for me to put in the basket last year how many balls did you throw and we lost we never did get that darn bear how many you guys are going down and look at the tractors with me I am I am grandpa oh I've always like to see the new gadgets they had don't let them crawl all over all the tractors you know the only thing about going to fair you always find Grandpa over by the RAC track watching them darn horses run around no the horse was here before the tror well you days is about done when you finish up breakfast you can go out and do your chores I think we'll load the C right into the back of the pickup truck take her over that all right d all right hang [Applause] [Music] on along with the carnival rides and sides shows the county fair is the far fer Showplace Dale has raised this heer himself and this afternoon it'll be judged take hold the gate here and slide the world fair and you st at [Applause] [Music] Montreal summer is a busy time of year for Mr Marco he's been waiting for several days for the oats to dry so they can be harvested now they are ready so even while the children can enjoy the fair the combine is put to work [Music] the oat stored in this Grainery will help provide feed for the cows all winter long earlier in the summer the hay was cut and bailed the way it is being done here these bales of hay are now stored above the barn before returning to the fair animals have to be fed cows used to be turned out to the Open Fields to graze but now Mr Markham prefers to use tractor energy to cut the green plants and carry them in the feed wagon right up to the barn look at them com Pat riy brings them on down opens the gates they have the work up and as they go Bing on the inside top came in the outside and went to the top here is fourth Bill Doyle is fifth Sterling High six Green P is seven and here they come it is dream Peter front end and also the back end you've got your gear box down here underneath your tractor and you wait and as she drives you got more traction old is she just a year year I think exact and then we go according to what you want to do you can leave your hood up go in stocks and let it come out and let everything go out and let the land dry out come back down put your hood down and as a result with a hood down it'll come down and make a perfect seat bed how about stones in here Stones uh doesn't bother that don't wait till these are all gone when these are gone I doubt if I can dig up over 4,000 more you want 10 of them you don't want to buy them in bunches like bananas all right sell them one at a time it don't make any difference yeah we give you a bunch of this green going to spend it all ever think about the farm it came from or the people that live on that farm except perhaps you for you have just spent a summer day with the Markham [Music] family oh yeah the uh the county fair man so living in Raleigh we don't have a County Fair we have the state fair here um but it's basically taking four three or four county fairs and squeezing them together um but man I love the fair I love it uh it is so great and the the corn on the cob there's this one corn on the cob vending uh Booth where they have a table where people put like shaky stuff on it and it it is like a an apocalypse of like powder and like some people go sweet so it's like sugar and cinnamon some people go salty or savory so it's like that but it's just that table is just always covered in this thick uh sheet of powder and there's so many things like I said I love about the fair uh and a lot of those things aren't there anymore they have gone away and it's not things you would think like I used to always go to the Mount Olive Pickle Place and get a pickle for 50 cents I'd always talk to the guy at the ball jar um they always would have a booth there and it was just talking about like how they make glass jars there was always this one old black guy that kind of worked there and you know they didn't do anything they just were there and so i' would always say hey how are you like I'd get my handwriting analyzed by all the different computers that were there even though the computer that they were reporting to to have looked like it was state-ofthe-art in like 1969 um so anyways all that that sound and all that just brings back all these memories just a wash with that all right so over here have another film set up it is not from Denmark I think we're going to be okay I have no idea though we'll see um this is ski ways to safety this is I guess Labor Day weekend's coming up and so this is your opportunity to get out there in water ski and this film will is a cautionary film for you uh enjoy a slom skier in action as graceful as a water engraved in lines of grace and beauty on the blue water is a great capital letter s s for sense s for safety ski with sense and you'll naturally ski with safety and discover why water skiing has become one of the safest and greatest Family Sports in all the world [Music] to start with let's emphasize that there's a big difference between water skiing and snow skiing the snow skier is entirely on his own once on that slope his performance and his safety are in his own hands but water skiing calls for a team a driver an observer and the skier the skier's performance and safety depend on the ability of these three team members to work together and do the right thing at the right time but perhaps we're a bit ahead of our story water skiing starts with water and therefore it's highly desirable for skiers to be able to swim though it's true that some people have first learned to ski and then learned to swim because of their enjoyment of water through skiing consider taking advantages of the learn to swim programs offered by the Red Cross and other organizations whether you swim well or not it makes sense to wear a reliable life jacket or life belt whenever you go water skiing although the wearing of a flotation device is not a formal regulation it sure helps after a fall and makes it a lot easier to retrieve and put on your skis in deep water [Music] water skiing starts with a boat and motor too speaking generally a good ski boat is relatively light highly maneuverable and uses a higher horsepower motor than comparable boats designed for cruising or fishing a good speedometer is recommended because precise speeds are important when you get into competitive skiing among Champions the highest ordinary speed is about 35 mph and that speed only for Barefoot skiing and men's jumping most skiers have a lot of fun at considerably slower speeds backto back seats are practical so the Observer can always face the skier a wide- angle rear view mirror is another important accessory keeping the driver in constant touch with his skier and of course safe and dependable steering is of Paramount importance in a good ski booat a ski boat is usually built close to the water or more nautically speaking has a low freeboard this makes it easier to retrieve skis and for the skier to climb aboard High Freebirds are designed more for Heavy Seas and Open Water here A Boarding ladder is a handy piece of equipment now for a look at some of the skier's gear foot binders binder adjustments and Hardware strengthening plates binder plates Runners and attaching Hardware should all be as simple as possible free of sharp or protruding surfaces that could scrape or cut the skin ski lines and handles should be free of complicated hooks eyes and other devices that might entangle catch or cut the ski now let's get back to the team and the teamwork that makes water skiing the great and safe sport that it is the captain of the team is the skier who call signals to The Observer from the water in gear take up that slack following orders is the driver the team's pilot upon whom so much depends a key member of the team is the safety Observer who keeps a Keen Eye on the skier and relays signals to the driver there goes the slack here comes the next command hit it hit it a perfect takeoff as the ski team goes into action a good driver makes skiing a lot more fun and safe Fun by obeying a few Simple Rules he takes off smoothly and maintains constant speed whenever possible he drives in a straight line but when a turn comes up he makes it smooth and safe he's constantly Vigilant and knows what's going on behind him and ahead of him at all times [Music] he gets back to a fallen skier quickly and when he gets in close always shuts that motor off even in neutral a running motor might turn the propeller enough to cause an injury a good ski boat driver gives clearance to this flag bright red with a diagonal white stripe telling him that skin divers are underwater he respects Fisher and stays well away from them he avoids bathing and swimming areas there's plenty of water for everyone the good ski boo driver keeps a safe distance from fixed objects like peers pilings and Ducks he never questions the RightWay of other votes he gives them the RightWay and takes no chances a good boat driver never accelerates his boote while any part of the tow line is wrapped around a skier you'll never take off until the skier is holding the handle with ski tips up in front even then he'll wait for a visual or audible go-ahead signal from his skier now for the third member of the water ski team the safety Observer whose job is to watch the progress of the skier keeping the driver informed of Falls and assisting him to stay clear of other boats swimmers or obstacles The Observer transmits the skier signals but doesn't distract him from the business of handling that Bol [Music] when a skier Falls the sooner that boat gets back the better not only to be of assistance but also to protect the skier against other boat [Music] traffic speaking of Falls they are definitely a part of skiing so learn the right technique when you fall try to avoid dropping forward [Music] fall backward away from your skis to avoid hitting them and possibly picking up a cut or a bruise clasp your hands over your head to signal that you're okay then retrieve your skis as quickly as possible because they'll help keep you afloat always hold one ski up out of the water to warn other boats to stay clear it's up to the driver to return the tow line to the skier as soon as possible so he can continue skiing instead instead of wasting energy treading water it's best to pass him in a fairly straight line so he can clasp the toe line and let it slide through his CED fingers until the handle comes up and is easily grasped when ready for the driver to take up slack the skier shouts in gear with the slack taken up the skier either nods his head or shouts hit it once up on the water the skier has signals for everything if he wants to go faster he holds his palm up and motions upward if both hands are in use nodding his head means the same thing when the speed is okay the skier makes the letter O with his thumb and forefinger when he wants to slow down here's the signal calm down motion downwards if a skier wants a certain speed he indicates with his fingers the desired miles hour two fingers then three means he wants 23 M an hour when a skier wants to turn he holds his palm vertical with curving motion of his hand in the direction desired if he's going to jump he raises his hand up sharply imitating the jumping Arc now for the signal to stop hand up fingers outstretched police bement style and to cut the motor a finger slicing across the wind pipe if a skier wants to return to the dock he points to the shore and gives the cut [Music] sign when he's ready to whip off he points to the direction then gives quick circular motions with his hand so we've seen water skiing as it should always be for the utmost in fun and safe a finally coordinated team of skier driver and observer each taking turns at all positions and each carefully following the ski ways to safety to summarize here's William D Clifford executive manager of the American water ski association bill Hi here's a simple truth water skiing is fun but most important it's safe last year some six million Americans water ski and this year they're going to be joined by many thousands more yet in spite of this water skiing accidents have been held down extremely low even though water skiing has become a major incentive for people to buy boats Motors skiing accidents are rare but we must face certain facts there can be and have been accidents and fatalities as a direct result result of water skiing but is in all accidents whether they be in the home or on the job they can be avoided by adhering to Common Sense safety practices the vast majority of water skiing accidents can be blamed on ignorance of skiing and boat handling fundamentals or on just plain recklessness or on the failure of some skiers to wear life jackets and belts it is significant that though most intensive skiing is done by organized ski clubs commercial ski schools or ski shows and competitive tournaments throughout this country that they account for less than 1% of water skiing accidents now there's no trick to this the individual or family skier can have the same sort of safety record no what you're doing in the boat and on the skis and use common sense fundamentals of water skiing and boat handling are available through the American water ski Association or your local ski club learn and practice the ski ways to safety and you will enjoy many many accident-free years of the greatest fun that water skiing has to offer whenever you see a slom skier in action think of that big double s s for sense s for safety [Music] I
