foreign all right we're going to interrupt that uh because it's like 25 minutes of that so but I wanted to show it nonetheless uh just to get it out there uh no idea uh what the film was about it just said nurse as you saw in the clapboard did it have sound uh the film itself we had the raw materials uh did not have sound um there might have been a separate uh audio track recorded to Magnetic Tape that was later than edited in but yeah it's raw material we have a lot of that um that one actually came from Oregon archive but we also have a bunch ourselves from various sources and also from um the Cornet collection we have thousands of reels of outtakes and raw material that have no soundtrack so we've been showing it um which is too bad there's no sound because how can we use our wonderful ears and how do we care for those wonderful ears let's find out thank you what do you suppose this is would you like to see more of the picture why it's toys all kinds of toys and what do you suppose this is shall we see the rest of this picture a Shetland pony can you see what this is a tank full of fish to see all these wonderful things about us we use our eyes so we use our eyes to see and to learn our story is about Joel who couldn't see too well what was the reason for this on this day the school nurse came to test the eyes of the children the nurse knew how important it is to take special care of our eyes Joel's eyesight was among the first to be tested in the nurse's office Joel looked at a chart showing the letter E in different sizes and facing in different directions when the nurse asked which direction the letter was facing Joel showed her with his hand but when he looked at the fourth line of the chart he couldn't see the letters clearly at all then he tried to test again with his other eye and found that he could see the letters somewhat better the nurse said that the test showed Joel probably needed to have his eyes tested by an expert so she wrote a note asking his parents to take Joel to an eye doctor for more tests a week later Joel's mother took him to the eye doctor with the office darkened the doctor asked Joel to take another test in this test Joel was to read aloud the names of letters from a chart on which there were several different letters the chart was set up so as to be 20 feet away from Joel at 20 feet most people can read most of the letters of the chart the doctor covered one eye and Joel began to read aloud this is how the chart looked through Joel's right eye the lower lines were blurred and he couldn't read them then the doctor asked Joel to read the chart with his left eye with his left eye he saw everything quite clearly except the last three rows that was surprising why could Joel see more clearly with his left eye than with his right the doctor would soon have the answer he asked Joel to look at a flashing light across the room now the doctor began to test the muscles of Joel's eyes the doctor explained that the shape of one eye may be slightly different from the shape of the other also the muscles which move one eye may be stronger than the muscles of the other these are some of the reasons we may see better with one eye than with the other and why each eye is checked separately by the doctor after the muscles of both eyes had been thoroughly tested there was still more to the examination to find out if Joel was depending upon one eye more than the other the doctor had special colored glasses using the glasses Joel looked at four lights since Joel was able to see all four lights the doctor knew he was not depending upon one eye more than the other with another special pair of glasses the doctor made a final test Joel's eyes weren't too weak but the examination showed that he did need eyeglasses to help him see more clearly what kind of glasses would Joel need that would depend on another test the doctor would give him but first drops had to be put in his eyes the doctor was very gentle and the drops didn't really hurt after the drops were added Joel had to wait for quite a while before he could be tested for glasses about an hour later Joel's eyes were tested again with this machine in the machine were many different kinds of lenses which are used in making eyeglasses by switching from one lens to another the doctor was able to decide the exact kind of lens that would be used for each eye in Joe's glasses with the proper lenses Joel saw the chart very clearly regularly testing the eyes is an important part of eye care for beginners and after the doctor had finished testing Joel's eyes full Joel other good rules for Eye Care when playing Outdoors or indoors be sure to protect your eyes good sunglasses are one way to keep your eyes safe from strong or glaring light try not to look directly at the Sun the sun is so bright that it can harm your eyes even when the sun is partly covered by the shadow of the moon or the shadow of the earth as happens during an eclipse the light may still damage your eyes if something should get in your eyes let tears come dust or any other small objects will usually be washed out always remember to take all sharp or pointed things such as pencils out of your pockets before you play when you carry scissors always hold them with the sharp ends away from your eyes make sure that when you work there's no glare or bright harsh light glare can often be easily stopped by properly shading the light we use when reading be sure your book or magazine is not too close to your eyes this will help keep your eyes from getting too tired if your eyes do get tired you might like to dab cool water gently on the eyelids but never put anything in the eyes unless the doctor has ordered it when watching television try to have a shaded light near the set and always sit some distance away from the television screen with your eyes at about the same level as the screen with the examination completed the doctor now showed Joel why some things look blurred to him the doctor had a model of the side view of the eye among the many important parts of the eye is the lens which works something like a magnifying glass when the lens of the eye is working properly we usually see things clearly but in Joel's case the lenses of his eyes were slightly thicker in the center than the lenses of persons with good eyesight that was why Joel saw things some distance away as being blurred to correct this the doctor wrote a prescription or instructions for making the kind of glass lenses Joel needed to help him see clearly a few days later Joel's glasses were ready the optician the man who made the lenses reminded Joel that just as our eyes need proper care our eyeglasses need proper care too they must always be kept clean a soft material is always best for cleaning glasses and when they aren't being used the glasses should be put away in a case by following these rules Joel would be taking good care of his glasses Joel certainly was proud of his new glasses and he would remember to wear them for now he could see clearly again he could see clearly to play to read and to learn whether you wear eyeglasses or not taking good care of your eyes will help you enjoy the world in which you live [Music] so that file was misnamed um but coincidentally I'm going to get my eyes examined today so it kind of serendipitously works all right so behind me I have a film scanner and this film is a little problematic right now but I'm gonna try it anyways so we're going to try to watch is a career in the service Industries for you get ready to sing enjoy [Music] do you do anyway s your place [Music] when you're finally on your own what will you do sooner or later each of you will say goodbye to your classroom to enter the world of work directly or after you get more educational training time spent now planning for that world of work may be the best investment you ever make film will tell you about one big and rapidly expanding area of work before this film is over you should be able to answer is a career in the service Industries for you [Music] foreign Industries or occupations you help people take care of their needs protect them people are your thing at home at school at business on the street in the hospital in the air a board ship in the park at the theater the bowling alley in restaurants the dry cleaners the laundry the barber shop for man and Beast in emergencies and more relaxed moments the number of workers in service occupations grows almost three times faster than the labor force as a whole and employment is expected to continue to expand rapidly as population incomes and Leisure Time increase you'll find opportunity to move ahead in the service Industries to make a career for yourself advancement can come in higher earnings more responsibility you can move up to supervision to management you might teach [Music] learn a beginning job and it opens the way to learning the whole industry maybe to running a motel an industrial cleaning company [Music] a plant Protection Service [Music] many workers go into business for themselves become Their Own Boss more than half of all beauty salons are owner operated and more than half of all Barbers own their shops [Music] maybe you like cooking are good at it or you get a kick out of taking care of babies or animals making people look better rest easier or feel more secure than the service occupations may be a good area for you to work in [Music] food preparation and service is the largest of the eight groups of service occupations included are chefs and Cooks and Bakers Waiters and waitresses stewards counter workers hostesses and bartenders with our expanding population with more and more people eating out more often people with food know-how are always needed lodging Services is another category this includes hotel and motel managers and their helpers housekeepers maids and housemen doorman and Bellman those entering the lodging Services have a good chance to move ahead generally hotels and motels promote within the organization building custodians make up another many of these maintenance people work after normal business hours clean up and make office and other buildings ready for the next day's work as the number of Office Buildings and apartment houses continue to increase the services of building custodians will be more and more in demand no organization can go too long without the service of building custodians many jobs are lumped into a fourth group personal services barbers masseurs bath attendance Animal Care attendance Airline stewardesses and ship stewards tour guides train attendance nursing AIDS and orderlies of whom there are almost 1 million mostly in hospitals cloakroom attendance and Beauty operators what do you need to be a personal service worker in general the desire to do a good day's work as for the specifics they vary with the job such as skill with your fingers an artistic eye liking people and being able to satisfy others as well as yourself with what you do housekeepers laundresses gardeners chauffeurs Maids valleys Companions and governesses and general cleaning help fall into the domestic service grouping some people working in homes can live in often becoming a member of the family traveling with the family at times too working as a house cleaner gives you a chance to choose your days and hours in another category amusement and Recreation services are workers in bowling alleys and Billiard parlors on golf courses and ski slopes on tennis courts and at swimming pools and by the sea ushers and wardrobe attendants in the theater workers at fairs and carnivals with the increase in lease in Leisure Time shorter work week more vacation time more and more services will be needed by those seeking Recreation and play another area is apparel services including professional dry cleaners and clothes presses laundromen and Dyers those who repair our shoes Tailors and seamstresses if you like working with the Machinery designed to keep today's fashion conscious world and clean and freshly pressed clothes you can find satisfying work in the apparel services the eighth group is the protective services state and city police officers and detectives County sheriffs in Bayless FBI special agents government guards and Air Marshals guards and Watchmen patrolling industrial plants schools and other buildings firefighters and inspectors many an important person started out in law enforcement Services by study by using free time advantageously they were able to become head of a department a district attorney a high-ranking federal official the educational qualifications you must have vary greatly in the service Industries FBI agents must have a college degree two years of college are preferred for airline stewardesses those who want to become Barbers or beauty operators are required to have specialized vocational training High School is the minimum requirement to become a policeman or fireman and it can be important to you in any occupation in some jobs general made waitress Hotel Bellman for example no educational requirements are specified what kind of person should you be to succeed in the service Industries all right all are too much to expect but most service workers deal directly with the public so you have to be good with people get along well a pleasing Manner and appearance are especially important for the theater Usher check room girl waiters and waitresses you'll need good judgment to be a store or hotel detective or travel guide being cheerful may be difficult at times but people will respond Hospital attendance particularly must be dependable [Music] endurance is especially needed by a porter lifeguard or window cleaner standard hours of work Prevail in many service occupations some however start after the normal work day firemen often draw 24 to 48-hour Duty stretches must sleep in waiters and waitresses often work split shifts have time off between the lunch and dinner hours and must work sometimes on holidays and weekends now what about pay in the service occupations getting rich may not be as likely is in many other career areas but you can live comfortably tips are important in many jobs particularly if you're a waiter or waitress but there are other Rewards satisfaction in doing for others where are jobs available pick a location to your liking odds are you'll find service occupations looking for help [Music] career in the service Industries for you you may see yourself in one or more occupations [Music] but you want to know or find out about the many other career opportunities in the world of work before you make a decision you'll want to see the other titles in the library of career counseling films to talk with your school counselor and teachers and your parents you'll want to dig into occupational information find out for yourself and then from all the careers you like and are suited for to choose your career choose it with the help of your school guidance counselor who can advise you on your prospects what further education or training you'll need and where and how to get it let the local office of your state employment service help you to understand your abilities interests personal traits and give you the local and wider picture of the work you want to do job opportunities requirements wages and conditions what lies ahead [Music] plan ahead and prepare so you'll be ready to move on to further education starbecker man he did the safety film last week uh emergencies in the making and that had a song and uh like I said he did this whole series which has songs then he did a world of work song then he did the funner dumb stuff so man Gene must have had a relationship with some singer-songwriters uh that he hired whenever he could uh so pretty great and yes we tried to get that in the toe tapping tournament but nobody liked it it got voted down so alas um Let's uh learn how to read a book enjoy [Music] thank you [Music] in spite of all the advances in communication that have taken place in the last few decades most of the information you will absorb while you're in school will come from books [Music] foreign [Music] textbooks and supplementary readings you'll get most of the knowledge that will help you carry on class discussions write your papers and pass your tests and how well you can read those books will determine how efficiently and effectively you can make use of the information they contain how do you read a book for me reading a book starts with just getting acquainted with it how does that help well it's sort of like dealing with an unknown territory a quick survey can help you find your way around it better what I do is get a feeling for the way the book is going to deal with its subject a title like writing power gives me a little information about what the book's going to cover but sometimes the title can tell you an awful lot like biological science a molecular approach the whole approach the book's going to take is right there in the title you get a feeling for how the information in the book is going to be organized it's not a whole lot of information but at this stage I'm just trying to get acquainted [Music] and then even if the title doesn't tell me too much about a book I always read the preface the preface is really a very special part of the book it's the only place where the author really talks to the reader one-on-one and when the author talks I listen in this physics book for instance you get an idea of how the author has organized his book physics its methods and meanings aims to give the student an understanding of the Contemporary view of the physical world it notes that all physical phenomena are described in terms of two fundamental concepts matter and energy it therefore selects the development of these Concepts as its central theme so I know reading this preface that this book is based on two big ideas just like I know by reading this preface that there's just one big idea holding it all together and what that idea is this book is built around a simple idea men change their ways mainly because some kind of stranger has brought a new thing to their attention what the prefaces of most books usually do is give me a sort of introduction into the table of contents here's where I can get the big picture of the important subjects the author decided to include in the book that gives me a feeling for patterns maybe how one idea is going to lead to another in this book for instance they start by just getting you ready for working in a chem lab then they get into the subject of matter how it can be mixed how it can be changed I get a feeling of the way things are going since a lot of what I get from any class is going to come from reading the text I want to make reading that book as easy and effective as I can and that's why I get acquainted with my book first of course most of the reading you'll do will not be introducing yourself to a textbook but following a reading assignment that usually means reading a chapter or two how do you read a chapter in a book what's the best way to get the most out of it maybe I don't know the best way to read a chapter but I know a good way and it usually gets me the results I want suppose I get a reading assignment like this one in my world geography class well first of all I spend a couple of minutes just looking through what I'm going to be reading reading it rapidly and slowing down once in a while at certain places there might be a list for instance like there is here that shows the different sections in the chapter and what does this sort of thing give me right off a quick idea of what the whole chapter is going to cover this one starts with the whole universe then focuses down to our solar system and then to Earth but I can guess it's probably going to look at the Earth like it was just a planet in space at least it seems like that from the way the sections are organized that'll give me a kind of focus too while I'm reading carefully later now I'm just skimming okay so I keep on with this previewing now I notice the special headings this time through I'll use them to help me get an overall feeling for the section I'm going to read later I'll use them in a different way here's one heading a universe filled with Mysteries okay got the picture Now The Big Bang Theory Big Bang well that's a new one on me and one more the birth of our solar system so I'm going to find out how the planets and the sun formed [Music] and I also look at the pictures too and any other kinds of graphs or charts it's kind of like warming up my reading engine I'm thinking about what I already know about the subject and what I don't know if there are review questions at the end of the section I always read them even if I can't answer them but I keep the questions in mind and that helps me to focus on what I'm supposed to be getting while I'm reading so now I'm finally ready to read the first section actually the preview doesn't take me too much time and it pays off in what I understand and remember so I start to read but something I've learned is that when you read a textbook you're getting reading help all along the way it's like there's a built-in tutor I'll show you what I mean say I'm reading I start the section on the universe and get down to The Heading a universe filled with Mysteries okay that's where the built-in tutor goes to work my tutor Turns The Heading around into a question what are the Mysteries that fill the universe and that's what I make sure I can answer by the time I finish that section and knowing that's what I want to answer I pay special attention when I read about neutron stars and radio galaxies and quasars what are the Mysteries that fill the universe neutron stars radio galaxies and quasars I change the headings into questions try to answer them while I'm reading and then use the questions to check on what I remember and understand a textbook has lots of tutoring places a word in italics and my tutor says pay attention to this a word in a different color or darker type than the rest of the print this is important I might want to make a note or look up a word in a dictionary or a glossary if the text has one you can't make sense out of what you're reading if you don't know what the important words mean while I'm reading I don't pass over charts or graphs or pictures because these are things that can really help me understand what I'm reading while I'm reading in this book about the movement of the Earth in space this particular picture helps me visualize how the Earth rotates on its axis and the direction it follows while it revolves around the Sun I get a clearer idea of what the words are describing and that's the way I do it I use all the built-in helps I can find in the book and there are a lot of them and finally I'm back at those questions at the end of the section the first time I read them it was to get an overall picture of what I was going to read but this time my personal tutor is giving me a mini quiz to see if I got the important ideas did I what is a light year it's uh better check it that's important so I do I go over all the questions at the end of each section like that and once I'm sure I remember the big ideas and understand them too then I read another section just the same way I did before and in textbooks where there aren't questions at the end to help me review I just go over the material myself asking the questions I made from the section headings and then at the end of a chapter most of my books do have summaries they don't all call them summaries but a summary by any name is just as useful and then even if most textbooks don't have questions after each section just about all of them have a quiz at the end of a chapter whatever they're called they help me make sure whatever the subject I've been reading about that I remember what I read and understand what I read it seems to me that's what reading's all about otherwise I'm just wasting my time sometimes your purpose for reading a book is not just to get acquainted with it or to read a chapter but to deal with it in quite a different way one of the important things I had to learn was how to read a book for specific information it's something that requires a few special skills if you want to do the job well what makes this sort of reading special and different is that you have to make a choice in what you're going to read say I want to get some information on a specific subjects more than my textbook will give me or maybe for a report I'm writing the reason is not important what is is that I need the information I've got a list of books that might have what I want I got it from the card file I know they're on the right subject but I don't know if they'll have the specific information I want and I don't want to waste a lot of time suppose I'm after some specific information on Ancient Greek architecture first I skim the table of contents of the book okay chapter five is the Greek style of civilization to 500 BC well that's the period I want but is there anything about architecture in that chapter I don't want to have to read the whole chapter to find out what I do read is the index of the book if it has one and just about all textbooks and a lot of non-fiction books do the best thing about an index is that it lists in alphabetical order just about all the topics covered in a book the worst part is not knowing just what word to look up for instance I want to look up some particular bit of information relating to ancient Greek architecture I look up ancient in the index nothing so I think okay the bigger idea where I probably should have looked in the first place is under Greek well no Greek only Greece lots of entries under that but not ancient architecture so what do I do you see what I mean it's a different kind of reading skill about all that's left to look up is architecture there are a lot of listings under that but sure enough there's my topic Greek and I assume it's ancient Greek they're talking about because it's combined with Roman but at least I've got a page number and I can check it out pretty fast now this book was published in 1973 the copyright date's usually in the front well it's not a very new book but neither is my subject if my subject were the architecture of space colonies then 1973 would be too old a book unless I was interested in the history of the concept so what I'm saying is when you read for special information the important parts of a book are the copyright date the table of contents and the index even though the index May sometimes start you on a guessing game that's the way to go to save yourself time and get yourself the information you want so how do you read a book you read it in different ways depending on your purpose whether it's just to get acquainted with the book or to read a chapter or to use it for supplementary reading books bring you a wealth of information but unlocking that information and making it your own depends on what you bring to the book in knowing how to read a book [Music] and what may I ask is it did if I do a child we haven't had school or books and ages cool really why don't you get rid of that schoolbook you can drop them in here get Round Up in there well of course it will dear child and so it should books tamper with man's basic natural ignorance now what could be worse than that but I can't find this book it's all property nonsense apple sugar you just need to get into them [Music] see the place not as good not nearly as good this one is just it brings it home in such a wonderful way and I started showing this a long time ago before libraries were under assault uh like they are right now so
