so so so so do so so so so hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was from a local film production company uh they were getting rid of a bunch of stuff cleaning out old storage so i got a bunch of reels and that was footage from nc state's student uh student union uh stuart stewart center i think that's what it was it's the old student union there's a new one now but um yeah so there was the theater they were beginning to show wknc a little bit the games room where i used to work i mean this was all shot before i went to school there um but not too uh much before i went to school there i started in 84. but um yeah uh stuart uh that student union was great spent a lot of time there um it's all some great stuff great movies great um performers um and a lot of really crappy hamburgers there so um yes it is it brings back some memories um anyways thank you jeremy for the coffee coffee is one way to just give a porcupine a few leaves and he's happy but i want something special wait a minute i already showed that phone i'm sorry i just saw i was entering into the spreadsheet and i just saw that i had mislabeled it the first time so we're not gonna watch that again because we watched it literally like a month ago so um you're probably making those comments in um saying like wait we already saw this uh so anyways um let's uh learn about god's christmas gift i know it's not christmas but um the message that family films has about christmas and god's christmas gift is is universal and it isn't that beautiful oh you've done such a wonderful job i'm glad you girls decided to work on this project you know this is more than just pieces of cardboard that have been cut out and put here this nativity scene will remind us of a wonderful event the birth of jesus but i have a special reason for being glad that you wanted to do this you know in the rush of trimming the christmas tree and shopping from store to store trying to figure out what gifts we can give i'm afraid we sometimes forget the the most important gift of all what's that mrs howard i'm not going to tell you what that gift is i'm going to let you think about it this next week won't you even give us a hint yes i'll give you some hints but the rest will be up to you are you ready well the first one has to do with our nativity seeing here the birth of jesus here's the next hint it won't cost you any money to give this gift and the person to whom you give it might say this makes me very happy and the last hint is the most mysterious of all you might give this gift i'm talking about and not even know that you're doing it and the people to whom you give it might give the gift right back to you why would they give it back does that mean they wouldn't like the gift no now no more clues see if you can't solve the puzzle during the coming week all right girls that's awesome [Music] it has to do with the birth of jesus and it doesn't cost any money and the one you give it to might give it right back to you that sure is hard to figure out i'm sure if you think real hard you'll get it goodbye [Music] see who have you been doing buying out a store don't worry honey i didn't buy them they were given to me oh i asked all the boys at the plant to bring in any old toys their children might have so we could fix them up and give them to the welfare committee oh that's wonderful these will make a lot of children happy they made me chairman of the committee oh besides i don't like to see any little girl without a doll or any little boy without a truck and this is one way we can help can i control my mind too daddy you sure can honey you just pick out any toy you'd like to give and let me know if it needs fixing up want to help me with these i'd love to daddy oh we do it in the basement can we take them down now oh no you don't supper's ready if i let you get down there i won't get you back till bedtime how do you like that your mother's interfering with the wheels of pragmas no she's not she's just keeping a perfectly good dinner from going bad come on come on [Music] how much does it cost to fix these toys well i don't know honey i never gave him much thought the toys are needed that's the important thing why i'm trying to think of a special gift you mean something for mother no something else sort of a riddle i have to figure it out by myself oh hey looks like i lost my helper tonight well you can't have her all the time i need it sometimes too you know i promised mom would help her make some christmas cookies but i'll be done pretty soon oh okay you go right ahead but if you need anyone to test those cookies i'll be in the basement okay christmas is a wonderful time isn't it it's even better than it was when i was real little yes darling and as you grow older and learn more and more about jesus and the celebration of his birth at christmas time it'll mean even more then oh mom we finished our major scenic church and i got to hang the star oh that's wonderful i must be sure to see it mrs howard's invited me to visit your class several times this would be a good time to do it wouldn't it oh yes please do you're fortunate to have mrs howard as a teacher i know we have so much fun in our class now we'll give these 10 minutes i don't want them to burn mom you're dying how much does it cost to make these cookies every year honey i never really come because i don't know why do you have i'm trying to figure out something last week in church mrs howard was talking about a gift she didn't say what it was but she gave some ideas oh that sounds exciting you need some help supposed to figure it out by yourself well what did she say about it well she said it doesn't cost any money and it's always welcome and it has to do with christmas and the one you give it to it makes them so happy that they might even give it back to you wow well that's a puzzler isn't it what do you suppose it is that's what i'm trying to figure out well when you find out what it is be sure and tell me won't you i will you know i have an idea how would you like to have our nativity scene in your own room this year oh mom could i i'll make a star just like the one i made at church [Music] my you sure there aren't any more burger broken ones here's one that's absolutely perfect it's nice the heads off well it tastes just as good doesn't it [Applause] there we are all 196 of them maybe you counted them no sandy did she's certainly been busy today i sent her to bed early thinking she'd be tired but when i went up for our good night talk and prayers she was busy setting up the nativity scene yeah i know i saw it star and all right by her bed you know she's beginning to understand the real meaning of christmas too mrs howard's been a great help to her she's a very fine teacher [Applause] i wonder what all that mystery is about the christmas gift sandy tell you about that yes she did she's determined to figure it out for herself but you better hurry then she's only got two more days to do it good you say 195 cookies no 196 and you stay out of them there they are all ready to go oh i just can't believe it they look like new but you've done a wonderful job phil i had a good helper oh they'll make a lot of children happy that reminds me i have to call the committee and see if they have any new names and addresses to add to my cookie list did you put down uh 127 walnut street that's our address daddy oh pardon me we'd better get those cookies delivered in a hurry they're all finished here except for the ones you wanted saved and i left you some frosting for them okay mom i promise me you and dad will come in the kitchen i have a special reason i promise we'll be in the living room if you want us more secrets i'm afraid so it's christmas you know you want me to help you carry some of these up no we better leave them down here till tomorrow they'll be out of the way and besides you're not quite dry yet all right oh they're wonderful [Music] ready here i come i mean especially for you one for each of you oh thank you darling thank you why they're beautiful oh this makes me very happy mama what's matter i i think i know the special goodness is how i was talking about it fits the clues in everything it's love i'm sure it is the gift of love how'd you figure that out mrs howard said the one who receives a gift might say this makes me very happy and that's just what mommy said she says the gift might come back and love does doesn't it it sure does honey the more we love the more love we have it's a gift that can be given again and again and never run out of christmas gifts we only give it christmas time but the gift to love is the most wonderful gift of all you can give it anytime yes it's the gift god gave us all at christmas time he loved us so much he sent us his own son as our savior he taught us to love not just at christmas time but all year round the gift of love i figured it out why do i tell mrs howard the gift of love hmm [Music] so [Music] all right family films we get it dad likes the cookies we get it um yeah so that's not a bad message compassion love for other people yeah i can't i can't fault that definitely compassion is what we need nowadays uh because it seems to be not the deal compassion for your fellow man okay next film um linda and billy ray from appalachia this is encyclopedia britannica film part of this kind of series late 60s early 70s for begin to do kind of ethnographic studies and cultural studies about other places including the united states so linda and billy ray enjoy my family's lived in these mountains for generations great grandpa lived off this land hunting fishing then they discovered coal in these hills and we fell into real good times working in the mines [Music] but today now that the mines are mostly shut down not so many folks live here as used to but we got some real nice neighbors that's our house and my daughter linda collins [Music] [Music] billy ray he's my boy his cousins mickey and audie are from cincinnati and been visiting with us for a couple of weeks [Music] playing outside can really work up an appetite and billy ray is going to be the first to dinner [Music] yeah man linda's a big help to her mother taking care of our littlest one [Music] those boys can't hardly stop long enough to eat hi uncle bill hi dad i go into town most every day trying to get an odd job here and there do a little farming too but not enough to speak of it's like that for most of the families around here we can't hardly manage anymore eat up just ain't no work mom ain't no work in town it used to be that everybody worked in the mines but then people stopped using coal as much as before so most of the mines shut down and then they started using heavy machinery that just could cut away the side of the hill to get to the coal wrecking the countryside the way they're minding the cold i don't know what we're gonna do my sister alma and her husband joe had a long ride down from cincinnati to pick up their boys [Music] audi and mickey like this in here in the country but they're sure glad to see their mom and dad again [Music] come on in okay hey you can't be hated [Applause] joe likes the country as much as a boys nice being up here in the country but then he didn't have my problems yeah it's nice if you got a job but man can't even get a day's work around here anymore well i've tried too many times to get you to go back to cincinnati with me not a good job school guy who wants to work schools and shops across the street it's nice for the kids i don't know i'd have to think about something like that maybe you should stop thinking about it and give it a try you can stay with us till you get settled well we did move up to cincinnati guess it can't be no worse than back home they got a few hills up there too but everybody lives so near to one another just no space to hey linda come breathe [Music] hey that new guy romney there i hate to crowd in on you like this ammo oh that's okay what's good alma went all her way to make us feel at home but two families in a small apartment isn't easy hard next door it won't be too crowded tonight i was hoping we'd eventually be getting our own apartment would you like to go shopping with me today because i don't know nothing about this so you have to show me around here i'll show you all the cheap stores that we have here billy ray didn't know quite what to do with himself that first morning i'll take you outside today get up there ready look at the chicken store so you don't know where it is i would like to see them there a long time since i saw any other but i'm almost ready to go shopping now are you ready yeah better come on we're going shopping shopping in the city is a new experience for them all when you don't have much money you gotta know the right places to shop and aunt alma knows the area real well [Music] the magic eye door at the supermarket fascinated billy ray and linda but the store clerk didn't like them blocking the customer's way and they really moved when he chased them away i don't know when they would have stopped if the puppies in the window hadn't caught their attention the pet shop manager was only inviting them to come inside and have a better look now billy's not sure just where he is or how to get back to marin and alma everything looks so strange and confusing until he sees his cousins [Music] meanwhile joe took me to the labor pool here the men are sent out on different jobs around the city [Music] i was a little confused as to the correct way to go about getting hired but i thought i'd just sit down and wait my turn well finally they got around to having me fill out an application form they sure asked a lot of questions i didn't have too much to write in here where it asked about your schooling since i never got too far and i haven't had much experience with any kinds of jobs they've got listed here either it was getting on in the morning and i wasn't too hopeful but then they got a call for a half days loading job well finally everybody got together again and alma wanted mom to visit the bible sewing center but that sure didn't interest the boys i'm reluctant to meet some of my kin folks this is alma introduced ma to everyone but she was a bit shy with all the new ladies [Music] and linda she had a chance to meet some new friends too we make quilts this everyone was anxious to make them feel at home and in no time maul was joining in the quilting view and having a fine time what is supposed to be wedding rings meanwhile the boys went over to the park where belly noticed something that was a little odd to a country boy he was about to catch up with his cousins when a conversation he overheard caught his attention [Music] we catch some good fish down on the kentucky river my kids were much better off down there and they played anywhere they wanted to and they just wasn't no danger of getting running with a car or but no danger of getting fighting nobody because there wasn't too many kids around with them and i wish i just moved back down there and keep them down there but the way it is i can already afford to do it without living the city because i better live in here but actually i'd be better off down there you rent a house down there for twenty dollars a month that you'd rent here for a hundred and have a garden and a big yard and all and here you just rent an apartment a lot of folks in this neighborhood came up from kentucky or tennessee i figure most of them would like to move back to the hills but like the man said he can hardly afford to do it the jobs are in the cities and you've got to have work if you have a family not that i can make that much money on this kind of a job but it's a start come down and sign that's the seat for me come down fill out this form for me [Music] boy i didn't know what i was supposed to do with that receipt what's this it's a delivery seat what do you think i really felt stupid come on mack i ain't got all day i felt like packing up and going right back to kentucky come right here [Applause] i wasn't the only one thinking about going back home billy ray didn't even hear his cousins making plans to go swimming over the pool tell mickey asked if he wanted to go with him would you like to go swimming with us at rachel could really really go swimming with us today no siree he ain't going besides it's a strange place over there he don't mom wasn't used to her kids going places without her even if their cousins were going billy ray and linda stayed home till aunt elma so gloomy in here got them to come outside get some fresh air meet some of the neighbors she could see it just into the city wasn't going to be so easy for them [Music] [Music] they sure do ma still wasn't keen on their children going over to the pool there'd be a lot of people the children didn't know not like back home where you knew everybody hey i really see your husband coming down the street by the time i got home i realized things wasn't going to be so easy in the city i didn't mind but i was afraid maul's hopes was too high she and alan was already talking about getting us her own apartment and i wasn't so sure we'd be able to afford it for some time yet i worked a few hours how much money did you get i made a few dollars mom's already forgetting that i'm the boss in the family even if she is only teasing [Music] me [Music] can we go swimmin start with your mother sorry with me mom can we go swimming i i guess maybe tomorrow tomorrow yeah tomorrow tomorrow funny how we always got a lot of hope for tomorrow for them all tomorrow means an apartment of our own even though it's going to be hard to find a nice one on the money i can make with so little schooling and i'll probably be spending my tomorrows hoping for any work i'm lucky enough to get but for linda and billy ray tomorrow means a chance to make some new friends i reckon it's easier for the little ones to adjust and i sure hope by the time they finish school they'll be a little more prepared than i was for the ways of the city so it's interesting because it's it's about change it's about the cultural change moving from where there's no work to where there is work um really kind of fascinating all right so we're going to try behind me i have um a reel of commercials tv commercials from the 70s uh some of them uh i kind of looked at some of them there some duplicates but it's definitely a different reel than what we've seen um and hopefully it's going to run without any problems so uh here are that's not right let me
